Solve : Pioneer DVR 107D problem?

Answer»

Hi peeps,
I've been using one of these OPTICAL drives for a while but it's suddenly gone weird on me.
It STILL reads CDs, CDRs & DVDs but I can't copy anything to a blank disc in it.
When I put a blank disc in & click on the drive in "MY Computer" it says "E:\ is not accessible. Incorrect function."
I'm using XP pro with an Athlon XP3200+ £ 1024 of RAM.

Cheers, Mark. You might want to run a Windows Update by going to http://www.microsoft.com ... Do a custom installation, and see if there are any updates for your hardware...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Are your or have you been running "DAEMON TOOLS" at all, i used to get that ERROR. when i would run it on my Desk top but have not not recieved it on my laptop.Nope, not running Daemon tools or anything like that.

Solve : printer/scanner will not install?

Answer»

I have a Lexmark printer/scanner that worked on my COMPUTER at one time.  I didn't use it often and unistalled it to free up space.  I tried to reinstall it only I get this message: C:/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/AUTOEXEC.NT.  The system file is not SUITABLE for running MS-DOS and microsoft windows applications.  Chose 'close' to terminate application.
I tried to INSTALL using add hardware wizard but it only installs the printer not the scanner or the program to use it.  Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.Hi! You're in luck... Solve : Laptop problems.... I need help.?

Answer»

I have a dell inspiron 1000 (the advanced kind with more RAM and a bigger screen).  It had been working fine for a couple months until one day when I tried to turn it on and it didnt.  Now all that happens when I press the POWER button is the Hard Drive LED comes on solid and thats it.  It just sits there with the hard drive LIGHT on.  I know that its not a HD problem because I tried removing the drive and PUTTING it into my desktop as a slave, it worked fine.  So now im stumped....  It looks to me like a power supply or MoBo problem.

-emh

(p.s. I have resorted to these forums because I spent over 6 hours on the phone with dell's "customer service" and got nowhere.  Apperently, the laptop that I have is not registered to me even though I bought it directly from dell.  I then tried the tech CHAT but it didnt work.)I think I'd be trying to put a lot more pressure on Dell, I did READ your other posts so I know your whole story.
Do you have any documentation of the purchase?
There has to be a physical location for Dell somewhere for you to attack. Quote

Solve : Unable to boot from new hard drive!?

Answer» HI,

I cannot install OS to the new computer. Motherboard Asus A7V600-X KT600, hard drive 120GB Seagate Plus 7200rpm 8MB. Bios detects HDD and HDD is set to be second bootable device in BIOS. When I start computer, BIOS is readed in and there it stops. No any error MESSAGE.
I can  boot from floppy. I can see hard drive from here, even format it, make partitions (FAT 32) and copy system (SYS C:). But it does make C: bootable. When trying set up Windows 2000 from Win 98 floppy disk, OS hangs after copying necessary files from CD to HDD with error message 'Runtime error R6003. Int. div. by 0'. When trying to make clean setup of Win 2000 with four floppies, OS hangs after reformating hard drive (NTFS) with no error message.
Any advices would be very welcome! And sorry for my grammar - not native around here.pandion.....  Exactly what do you mean by .......
"When trying to make clean setup of Win 2000 with four floppies" ? Do you have a single M/S win 2k disk ? and you have a Win98 boot disk ........
I'm guessing you .......got an A: prompt .......then typed Format C:      and enter ......... the hard drive was wiped clean .........then you rebooted with the win 98 boot disk .......which would load several small files as well as a driver for the cd - rom .........when that had loaded and at the A: prompt ......you would change to drive D: ( probably ) then put in the win 2k disk and type install ( I think )  followed by enter .......and it should begin to load .

http://www.techadvice.com/win2000/i/install-win2k-pro.htm

dl65  I tried to install Win 2000 in two different ways. First making small partition (6 GB - fat 32) over Win 98 startup floppy, almost as dl65 described. Then I checked, that C: is functional using COMMAND ‘cd’ and changed to win 2000 CD-ROM, found winnt.exe and [enter].
Second time I MADE clean setup (with new partitions in NTFS) using four Win 2000 startup floppy disks almost as it is described in the web link sent by dl65 or in M/S Windows homepage. Computer hanged both times just before first restart would occur in normal setup.

pandion.....It's entirely possible that one or more of the 4 floppy disks had some corrupt files on them .....Can you get 4 new floppies and redownload those disks and try again .......

dl65  I can try that! But I keep wondering, why C: does not boot after making small partition (FAT 32) and using "sys c:". I should have "c:/" on the screen and DOS commands available! But I don't!  did u make your c:\ drive an active partition....ifnot it will not boot from it.... use fdisk to see if the partition you made is active...

Solve : No power!!!?

Answer»

i press the power button...nothing happens...i open up the CPU and clean/dust it out...nothing still...take off the power switch panel and hit the power button to make sure that there is contact or whatever, nothing still...I know it's not a power supply ISSUE because i recently got a new one and it ran fine for awhile with it in...I know i probably NEED to buy and new power switch(?) but would you recommend me try anything else before i go out and buy one?

thanksI don't know why... But I think it's the power supply, seeing as I had the same problem... When your old one WENT, and you got the new one, did you get the SAME voltage? Was it installed correctly?

[glb]Flame[/glb]yeah, everything was installed properly and it's the correct voltage, but im starting to think that something may have popped loose when i took the comp from michigan to floridaCheck your jumper cables. for the power switch. That was a prob on my other system.

Solve : RE-installing a Visioneer 7600 scanner?

Answer»

I've had the Visioneer 7600 scanner operating (perfectly) on THIS machine for several years.  Recently, I had to reinstall all software, and now the scanner refuses to find its driver.  It suggests that I unload some programs and try again.

This is a low-RAM machine (64MB) and I don't HAVE lots of extras loaded.  But even when I unload my virus program, I get the same message.

Details:

1.  I have REinstalled the scanner, then COMPLETELY removed it (including cleaning up the Registry), and then reinstalled again.  I've done this 2-3 times.

2.  Device manager and cameras/scanners in Control Panel say the driver is correctly installed and functional.

3. When I load the scanner, the machine finds the scanner and puts it in my tray, but when I try to scan, copy, or other, it  warms up the lamp, then is unable to find the driver.  That's when it suggests that I unload other "running" programs.

4.  I have found new drivers for the scanner.  Same result.  I have found "alternative" drivers.  Same result, so I go BACK to the original installation disk.  Same result.

5. The Visioneer home page is useless (except for finding a new driver -- which turns out to be useless, too).  They have NO e-mail support -- but do have a 900 phone number.  :-/  BTW, the 7600 is no longer on the market.

What might I do next?  EVERYTHING else runs fine.

HP PAVILLION 6645C

Jim Lewis - [email protected]Hi Jim... I'm a little concerned for two reasons... (1) This is a low RAM machine... Which operating system are you USING? (2) Why were you forced to uninstall the drivers in the first place?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Is your Visioneer 7600 parallel or USB?
Are you using Win95, Win98 or WinME?

https://visupport.visioneer.com/Portal/view.aspx?id=d1e7e7ea-376d-45e8-b320-223d4053d3c5

https://visupport.visioneer.com/portal/ProductSupport/home/7600_downloads.html
W98 SE, with all the updates and fixes M'soft can think of.
Dunno what the problem was.  Computer wouldn't boot.  I assumed a virus of some sort, but Anti-Vir was freshly updated (every Friday).  This happend on a Saturday (but I'd been using the new v-definition files and had rebooted a coupel of times).  So??

This is the exact configuration I had when the scanner worked great for 4 years.  If anything, I have less installed now than then.

The Visioneer is USB, and all the USP ports/controllers (whatever) check out OK, too.  Cables are tight.  As I said, W98 seems to find the machine enough to put it in my taskbar, but loses it again when I try to USE it.

Hopefully (tho new scanners don't cost THAT much) . . .

JimI assume you followed all these steps:
http://www.nohold.net/noHoldCust9/Prod_5/KnowledgePortal/KPScripts/ArticleViewer.asp?docid=5776af5287634becb8f15034352d939f_install_new_driver.xml
Yes.  Have been to all those links, have downloaded the driver, have followed all of those steps (SEVERAL times!) and still can't get the &^%$ thing to work.

Thanks.

jimYou've tried everything I can think of.  It is possible that the scanner is partially dead.  The only thing left to do is try the scanner on another computer.

It could be a Win98 issue.  Win98 doesn't always plug 'n play as it should.  BTW, 64MB on Win98 is sufficient.
Yeah, 64 MB is "sufficient" but I should have more.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I'd about figured the same thing, so it's back to CompUSA (or somewhere).

Solve : 3 fans - 2 connectors ??

Answer»

hi people

about six MONTHS ago my mobo fried and i had it replaced with a cheap board.  lately i noticed my system running warm so i OPENED it up and FOUND one of my 3 fans was unhooked.  why?  because there is no place to hook it up.  Is there anyway to GET this FAN hooked up?  I don't see any other connection with the same specs.  Maybe hardwire off of the psu?

any advice or comments greatly appreciated!you can get a splitter for the 4 pin connecter that fans usethanks for the reply K

my fans are 3 pin but i suppose if they make 4 pin splitters they would make 3 pin splitters also.
putting 2 fans on one connector is a great option but would that cause any problem?  (power drain or maybe fans running slower)only if u have an under powered Power supply and a lot of other stuff.good advice K

located a 3 pin splitter to connect off the mobo and hooked both fans up.  this also keeps the sensor so i can monitor them.

thanks again

great forum!

Solve : Epic hardware upgrade tragedy?

Answer»

Hello,
This QUESTION pertains to my computer and my problems upgrading it. I currently have 512MB DDR400/PC3200 RAM and have wanted to upgrade. So I purchased a STICK of RAM that MET the specifications (I used EVEREST software to determine the exact type) and installed it. I did not do a BIOS check because i did not know about it. Things seemed to work better though i did not notice a huge increase in performance, i did notice however, that programs would crash more and more often. The most demanding programs (Games) would have a 15minute shelf-life before crashing to the desktop. I decided to take the new stick of RAM out and see, and alas there were no problems. I ALSO noticed that the computer still thought it had 1GB of RAM. I then bought another stick of RAM from Crucial, and the same problem took place. I tried using one stick, but the crucial one, and the problems persisted. I also tried to install another hard-drive, and the same problems came up "System has recovered from serious error". I am thinking maybe my power supply is too weak, but i am simply confused. Hopefully you all know.

Thanks

Solve : Getting a headache over this?

Answer»

First time I ran into a problem that don't make sense. It all started with an issue building a pc. Had a posting issue, so started replacing memory, cpu and VIDEO card from a working PC. Upon replacing the original components back into the working pc am now getting singular POST beeps in the AWARD BIOS, which appears to be RAM-related. I have reseated, the RAM, changed it out with new RAM and am still plagued with that single, regular post beep. Any ideas, 'cause I'm out of them. Glad I have plenty of PC's....geesh!It sounds like a bad connection somewhere on the motherboard.  Probably ONE of the RAM sockets is "weak".SHOW off Meat Popsicle....lolol!

Solve : Computer won't recognize CD Roms?

Answer»

Argghh,

I'm running Windows XP and my PC will no longer recognize either of my CD rom drives.  I'm getting an error code 41.

Can anyone provide helpful advice?

PatriciaWindows SUCCESSFULLY loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

A driver was loaded but Windows cannot find the device. This happens when Windows does not detect a non-Plug and Play device.
If the device was removed, uninstall the driver, install the device, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the driver. If the hardware was not removed, obtain a new or updated driver for the device.

If the device is a non-Plug and Play device, a newer VERSION of the driver MIGHT be needed. To install non-Plug and Play devices, use the Add Hardware WIZARD. Click Performance and Maintenance on Control Panel, click System, and on the Hardware tab, click Add Hardware Wizard.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to START the troubleshooting wizard.

Solve : Lost clusters on a Toshiba 1.3GB HDD (Satellite)?

Neither helped.

1.  Yes.
2.  Try one of the other manufacturer's software.  Sometimes they work.  Some software is written by 3rd party (i.e., Ontrack) and is generic and not specific.  You may have to search the web for an older VERSION.  Toshiba online support is not too good.

Solve : Weird Motherboard Headers?

Answer»

The MOTHERBOARD I'm interested in getting has a few things I'm not sure of.  What's an...

AUX-In HEADER
CD-In header
COM 2 header
Game header
FDD header
12V ATX power conncetor

Yeah, lots I don't know.  I don't understand why it has the regular P1 ATX connector and ANOTHER 12V ATX power connector.  I've never even heard of that...

Check it out

CD-In header - audio in from the CD
COM 2 header - 2nd Com port
Game header - Game Port
FDD header - Floppy Disk Drive
12V ATX power conncetor - From ATX power supply, not enough 12V from main connector.Ok so if I have a DVD-ROM (or RW, whatever) and a CD-ROM, I would PLUG the audio for both of them into each header.  So the AUX-In header is like a secondary audio header?

But I still don't understand what a game header is.  What would I plug into it?

I also still don't understand why there are two power CONNECTORS.  Can I just use the P1 connector and not the 12V smaller thing? Quote

How the heck would I plug my joystick into my motherboard?  Don't you usually plug it into a (I think it's) 15-pin (not VGA) DB connector on your sound card?

Do most power supplies have that extra connector?  I want to get the Ultra XConnect 500W and I don't know if it has it.  Sorry, I've just never heard of this kind of connector before...

Solve : Hard drive or other problem??

Answer»

Probably more than 6 months ago, my computer froze on me and started clicking.  I let it REST, and a few hours later, it ran just fine for a few more months, then it happened again.   I did the same thing as before and it worked just fine.   It just happened again today, and id like to just get it fixed because im tired of it and it may be serious.  I have two hard drives connected, one i know has problems, and i use it as a secondary drive, so it shouldnt affect startup.  i tried starting it, and it freezes at the intel motherboard screen.  It clicks once or twice but sometimes more, but never gets past the screen.  I just used it yesturday with no problems at all.  I checked to see whether its the hard drive, and i listened and the clicking is coming from one of the hard drives, more than likely the master, but i may be wrong. After messing with the cables i put them back to normal and i tried turning the computer back on. Well, hitting the BUTTON didnt even start the computer anymore.  I unplugged it, plugged it back in, worked fine.  This computer is a few years OLD, 1.6ghz,512DDR 233mhz, 80gb/60gb Hard drives, GeForce4 4400 Ti. Good computer, but the hard drives been messing up.  Well, i just thought i'd ask what EVERYONE thinks, i duno whether its the hard drive or what. one place said the power supply can do the same thing.  Try to post as soon as possible, i think im leaning towards getting a new hard drive either tonight or tommorrow so speediness would be much appreiciated.  Oh, does anyone know any good websites to buy computer parts.  So far ive gone with tigerdirect, never had a problem, but im interested in hearing where others may go to get good deals for a good price. thanks in advance.Who is manufacturer of hard drives?  You can download testing utilities from them.Well, if it gets up and running again, ill try that, but this might be it for the hard drive. Just curious what i should do if it wont turn back on.Unplug the hard drive and see if it boots a bootable floppy disk.  It should boot it plugged in or not.  Go to BIOS and see if hard drive is SEEN.  Change boot order to boot floppy 1st.

Solve : Modem connecting at 28?

Answer»

My problem is I cannot connect at 49 speed that my other computer connects at using the same isp and phone LINE. I have gone into control panel - modems and set the connect speed to the highest setting (well above 56), anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in ADVANCE for any help,
..JohnFirst off.... Your computer must be VERY SLOW... You are SUPPOSED to have at LEAST 256 MB RAM for Windows XP... Maybe that is why? Also, is this a wireless connection?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Hello friend, how are you? There are many reasons of this problem.
First of all make sure that your telephone cable has no extra joints. In other words. it must have very least number of joints. For best results, try to make it only 1.
Second thing is that, make sure that before connecting to the internet, all telephone sets you have are disconnected to the telephone line.
Thirdly, make sure that the settings of you connection is compatoble with your ISP.
Last thing is that, you must have an updated drivers for your modem.
Another thing is that. the telephone line must be connected to "LINE" socket at the back of the modem rather "PHONE".
Do take care of you and others and be happy.

Thanks all for the replys and help. In ANSWER to the questions: Not wireless using the phone line, computer does not seem slow when not on the internet. I will check the line/phone socket...Are you positive it's a 56k modem and not a 28k?

Solve : Computer Mouse can't drag and move icons...?

Answer»

My computer mouse (USB type) has suddenly lost the ability to drag icons, file FOLDERS etc. What will be the problem? Meanwhile, the streamer sceens of my investment accounts also are malfunctioning, I can not use the mouse to click on the streamer sceens (completely frozen) and it has been impossible to use the mouse to read java charts etc. Are these problems related to each other?  Could be a bad mouse, but try plugging it into another USB port.I think that I have the solution... Right-click on your desktop (an open area), and point ot arrange icons... Next make sure that AutoArrange is NOT checked... If it is, then click on it to uncheck it...

[glb]Flame[/glb]Thank you for the replies. I tried to correct the problem following your suggestion, unfortunately, it did not work out. EXCEPT the problems I mentioned above, the mouse works OK.I should have asked earlier... What operating system is this?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Windows XP. BTW, the screen SAVER function was also automatically disabled at the same time (and I could not restore it). Are some spywares or worms or viruses in charge of these problems? Thanks. There could be... However, you should not have to worry so MUCH about that if you have protection for spyware and viruses...

John B. ginger1...."Is it safe to connect or disconnect the USB cable to/from the computer while the computer is on, or should I shut the computer off "  Your USB ports should be HOT swapable ........or in other words ...it's ok to have on when plugging in or out .

"Also, is it safe to connect/disconnect the camera to/from the USB plug while the computer is on? "

YES ....but make sure the camera is POWERED off.

Double CHECK your camera manual just to be sure .

My computer will not load windows when booted up.  It will not let me into safe mode or Last known good configuration.  It just KEEPS rebooting over and over.  any ideas? How far in the boot sequence does it get?One solution is to reinstall Windows over itself. This will RETAIN your documents and settings and any FOLDERS outside of the Windows folder, but you'll probably have to reinstall drivers and software.Have you made any CHANGES to your systemj prior to the incident?

Solve : Question about DMA?

Answer»

OK, this is a long story, so please bear with me as I really need some advice/help.   I recently purchased a used Dell Dimension L700CXE from a seller on eBay.  My plan was to find an inexpensive, but better than a Pentium II, system to give to my sister and her family who need a new system but cannot afford, nor need, a very powerful system right now.  The purchase itself was an ordeal, but I will spare you those details.  The system has a CELERON 700 processor, and uses the CA810E motherboard.  It appears that the system originally shipped with a Maxtor 20 GB HD, but currently has a Western Digital 13.6 GB EIDE (model WD136BA) HD installed.

When I received the system, it had what I was told was a fresh install of Win2000.  However, very soon after I went online, I was bombarded with spyware.  Obviously it was not a fresh install.   As a result of the spyware issue, I ran into trouble while installing the Win2000 updates.  I feared that my only option was to wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall the OS. Since I was not sent any installation CD’s (as seems to be the norm with systems purchased via eBay), I was forced to revert back to Win98.  I happened to have an unused copy of this OS that I had purchased for an old system that was no longer in service.

Not being comfortable with breaking down the Win2000 NTFS partitions on the hard drive to install Win98 using FAT32, I chose to take the system to a local shop.  They found the drivers for the hardware online (or let Windows detect and install native drivers) and everything SEEMED to be OK.  I was able to go online and update Windows completely (though this time Win98).  I decided to go to PC Pitstop.com and run an exam to see if there were any apparent problems that I should know about.  Most of the issues were minor – settings and the like – but one jumped out as being peculiar.  The report said that the hard drive had unusually slow access speeds (5 MB/s).  One of the suggested solutions was to make sure DMA is enabled on all drives.

After verifying that DMA mode was not enabled on my drive, I found it odd that this option was not enabled by default, which MADE me wonder why.  I did a little research, but got into issues that were over my head.  From what I could gather, the DMA mode has to be supported by the motherboard and that the correct EIDE controller drivers must be installed.  I physically checked the motherboard and found a chip labeled 82801AA, which is listed in the device manager as the Intel 82801AA Bus Master IDE Controller, so I assume that the proper controller drivers are indeed installed.

I went ahead and checked the DMA box on the hard drive properties window, and Windows warned me that “Changing this setting may have undesirable effects. Contact your hardware vendor to ensure that the setting is supported.”  I clicked OK, restarted, and it SEEMS to work fine in DMA mode, but I don’t want to run into trouble down the road.  I reran the PCPitstop scan and this time had access speeds of 22MB/s - a little more normal.  How do I find out for sure that DMA is supported by my hardware?  Does the cable have anything to do with it?

One thing to note is that it appears that generic drivers were used for the hard drive. It is listed in the Device Manager as “GENERIC IDE DISK TYPE47.”  Could this be why DMA was not turned on by default?

On a similar note, should I enable DMA mode on the CD-ROM drive as well?

I like to consider myself somewhat knowledgeable about computers, but this stuff is beyond my realm.  Can someone PLEASE offer me some insight on this issue?  All I want is a simple, smooth running system with no expected problems that I can give to someone with limited computer knowledge.
If you can verify that the motherboard at a certain bios level and the hard drive are both DMA compatible then you should have no problems.  A quick search of each manufacturer's website ought to answer that.

In my quick estimation it really should not be a problem, since the computer was manufactured well after DMA came about and WD drives have handled that well for a while now.

The cable has nothing to do with DMA.

Of course you will get spyware when you go online. just because its a fresh install doesn't mean it is magically protected.

get a good AV like panda or a AVG and a good spyware detector like Spyware S&D

Well, I did just notice last NIGHT that there is a "Direct memory access controller" listed in the System Devices portion of Device Manager.  This should answer the question, right?

Now, is there any way to verify that the CORRECT drivers are installed for the chipset so I won't expect any problems in the future?

I don't think that a person should be hammered with spyware from just simply CONNECTING to the internet and going immediatley to the Windows Update site, should he?  I did NO SURFING...not even a search.

Spyware
Just connecting is enough to infect you.  Maybe not "spyware" but certainly "trojans".  Install Firewall before connecting to internet.Last I heard the average amount of time for a computer to become infected with something once connected to the Internet via broadband was 37 seconds, dial-up takes longer.  Kinda scary isn't it?   Seriously?  Even if you are working with a clean install, then just simply connect to the internet (this is dialup by the way), and going straight to Windows Update, leaves you susceptible to spyware/viruses?  How does it find you?  I do not understand.

PKWhen you dial-up, you're on the network.  Like an old party-line telephone, everybody's connected.  Look at my signature, how does it know your public IP and your ISP?  What you see is yours, what I see is mine.

Solve : PC will not boot from cold?

Answer»

For some time my PC was on 24/7.  I SWITCHED it off at Christmas and it took several tries to get it back on.  I assumed it was just a glitch and didn't worry about it.  I left it running 24/7 for a few months, then switched it off again.  The same problem occurred - it took several tries to get it to boot.  The exact sequence goes like this:

1. Switch off at night.
2. Switch on NEXT day.  Screen is blank, no beeps, no access to BIOS.  Hard drive spins up.  CD drive is not accessed, nor is floppy drive.
3. Wait a while to let PC warm up.  May get a few noises between click and beep, but nothing that matches any of the beeps in the beep table.
4. Switch off and try again.  The PC may start up.  Sometimes the CD drive is accessed around now but the boot PROCEDURE doesn't get any further.
5. If the PC doesn't boot, repeat steps 3 and 4 until it does.

This problem is one I really need solved.  Help!!! Quote

Open it up.  Probably full of dust.
Just for fun make sure your monitor is off when you turn the computer on, then turn the monitor on after a bit.

I have seen monitors try to pull too much power and the computer starves for the same power.  I don't see this much ANYMORE unless they are older monitors and COMPUTERS.

Solve : external hardrive newbie?

Answer»

Just bought my first portable HD.
80gb, smaller than my hand, INSTRUCTIONS and support ALL/ONLY  in Japanese. (It's logitec)
So, can I ask a few questions:

It's up and RUNNING, seems fine.

But, takes FOREVER to copy things to it. (20 minutes for 700mb file) Is this normal?

Does it COMPRESS or alter info I send over there?

I want to use it to hold video I'm importing and working with while editing with iMovie.

Anybody have any comments or experience with this?
I really appreciate any input.
Thanks in advance. That actually sounds about right for a USB external drive, using USB 1.1, USB 2.0 should be 1/4 of that or better.

USB 1.1 was designed at 1.5MB/sec shared.  Which means all devices on that particular port share the 1.5.  The actual throughput is normally about 0.7MB/sec, so the MATH there works out to about 16.7 minutes to copy the file.

The designers of USB never envisioned high speed USB drives, the design was more on the line of printers, scanners, PDAs, mice, keyboards, etc.  Relatively low throughput items.

You should probably consider the USB drive as more of a backup and archive device than a place to work from, especially for graphics type operations.

If you are working with LOTS of video then you probably need to consider adding another high speed internal drive.

Solve : A strange system problem?

Answer»

My little brother got a computer built for him by a professional.  However, it's been suddenly shutting down whenever anything is clicked or when he's playing on Nick.com.  I really need help FAST!!

he's got an AMD Mobile athlon processor in a ABIT NF7-M motherboard, 120 GIG HD, and a WIRELESS card in a PCI slot.

Thanks to all those who can help me!tryed a virus scan? doesn't sound like anything else except maybe a PSU problem. though it is unlikelyWe've done a slew of virus scans, so it's probably the CPU, right?not the CPU the Power Supply.... though i do dowbt that. If it was the PSU then it would be closing down more regularly. not beeing able to boot properly.

have you made any HARDWARE changes recently?Well, no not really,  It's a new power supply, I think....I'm gonna have to talk it over with my father who purchased most of the parts.

I heard that it's more a Processor incompatability with the motherboard, but the MB was transfered from my computer (which it worked like gold) but I don't think anything was damaged in the transfer.

We HAVE had the same problem with my dad's old comp, then the PSU shorted.  I think that may be it.

Solve : Tiny C**p?

Answer»

Hello All,

It began when I bought a computer from Tiny, very cheaply (c. £700 "Tiny Thunder"). Same computer elsewhere would be from £1,200.

There was a CATCH of course: You have to get their support for £1/hour.

Having an experience with computers for a couple of years I felt confident that I will not need their support and was very happy when computer arrived.

When unpacking the machine and taking it out of the box I hear some suspicious rattling inside if computer is slightly shaken.  On opening it was a CPU fan hanging by just one pin.  They have collected the computer and replaced it.

But recently computer packed up again.  This time it does not even boot up.  Screen does not react absolutely.  CPU fan though is working at high speed and nothing else happens.  If I leave it on it goes on like this forever.  Apparently CPU fan is the only thing that works in this computer at the moment.

The computer features a “Musketeer” unit that probably controls temperature for the fan.

Does anybody have any idea what could stand behind the PROBLEM?
Any one else had an experience of “Tiny” machines?

Thanks

I'm no expert, but it sounds to me like all the power is going to the fan.....

Does anything else make any movement (other than the fan)?

--------------------
I like work......to an extent... otherwise, I'm just plain lazy.
-------------------It may sounds silly, but it is another fan which is attached to "Musketeer" and POWERED by it.
PSU unit has fan as well.

The CPU fan was rotating so wildly usually during first couple of seconds of booting up, but then become LESS noisy.  Now fan ROTATES  always as if computer is about to bootup, but nothing is happening

Solve : compaq pasario will not boot up?

Answer»

When I turn on my compaq pasario 5000 computer nothing happens except that the num LOCK light on the keyboard flashes. I have checked everything, connections, cards and cmos battery. I cannot even get into bios setup options. I have emailed compaq and they are unable to HELP me either.

Anyone with possible solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much.   Have you scanned for viruses? It sounds like your computer is "powering-up" properly, but is not loading Windows, which sounds to me like the work of a virus... Have you scanned? Which Operating System is this? Also, have you installed any new hardware/software prior to this incident?

[glb]Flame[/glb]I cannot get the system to even go through the boot up process.
The only thing that happens when I power up is That I hear the hard drive spinning and the num lock light flashes on the keyboard.

I have not added any new hardware to the system at all.

Thank's for the input.

JeffBut does the computer shut down, or do the fans still spin? In simpler terms, is the computer still powered on?

[glb]Flame[/glb]Hi This has happemed to one of my clients with the same model and the only way out we found was to have the data recovered and install all data onto a new computer. You cannot use the recovery disks that came with the computer as they have no boot up SECTOR. I would never buy a computer of any type if it comes with recovery disks. If you can get into the BOIS and have the computer boot from CD and you buy OME Windows disk that is the full version and reformat  the hard drive. If not the only place for the computer is the trash can. Sometimes with a bit of luck you can put a full version Windows XP disk in the drive and reboot (but not the recovery disks) it it will start up, but as I said with some luck but in most cases it won,t.Woah, woah....  Ojas, before you go around advocating the purchase of a new comp, consider this:  wouldn't it be possible to buy a new motherboard instead?  If it's not going into BIOS, chances are, it's either the PSU or the Motherboard...  If the computer actually stays on (Whether anything boots or not), chances are, the PSU is fine...  In which case, the motherboard would be the only POTENTIAL problem.  Then...  Can't Jeffrey buy a new motherboard for $50 rather than a new computer for $500?  Well, I'm not too SURE about this, cause I've never tried to replace the motherboard, but I'm sure it's possible...Thank's for the information. After I power up the computer, and all I get is the num lock light that flashes on the keyboard, the power does stay on, but I am unable to do anything else.

I did think that the motherboard was bad but I was hoping that it was not.

I suppose that since I can't get past the flashing num lock light on the keyboard, I will not be able to get into the bios.

If anyone has any other suggestions, I would really appreciate them.

If not, I guess I'll be replacing the motherboard this weekend.

Thank's

Jeff

Solve : Firewire Tryer?

Answer»

I have just installed a FIREWIRE card into my PC, so that I can use my ipod with it.

It seems to be installed ok - I see no conflicts or anything, but if I have the ipod plugged in via the firewire, halfway through the boot up (after the windows logo has appeared), the screen stay at the black part... and doesn't get any further. If I then pull the ipod connector out of the firewire port, it continues, and loads windows.
(Or if I leave it out from the start it loads fine).

It seems to be ok if I only CONNECT the ipod after booting up, but this is onconvenient as the ipod is docked to my PC most of the time.

Can anyone tell me why my computer is doing this, and what I can do to rememdy the situation?

Many thanks in advance for any replies posted!!
Kop442000Is it just the Pod beeing connected or any firewire device. also if you have the DOCK plugged in but not the pod does it STILL bootThanks for the reply!

I don't have any other firewire devices to try, but:

I tried booting with the firewire dock plugged in, but leaving the ipod undocked, and it booted fine!

Tried again with the ipod in its dock, and it got stuck.

So what does this mean?

Many thanks,
Kop442000.It means it could be a pod issue? try plugging someone elses pod into it. If it boots fine then i would speak to apple. if you get the same problem then just stick the pod in after it boots? That happened with my father's USB external hard drive as well...  I solved the problem by playing around with the boot order in BIOS (In my case, I turned off the setting that said "Boot from USB devices" or something...  But I'm sure you can get the same effect by disabling the "Try other boot options" setting.)...

It may have got changed or gone into default mode from a flat battery or SOMETHING, just thinking out loud here.I went through the bios when this problem first happened and i did not see it anywhere in there

Solve : Monitor keeps dying?

Answer»

I am wondering if it is just coincidence or if something is wrong with my computer.  I have gone through 2 monitors in a year.  I do NOT keep the monitor on when the computer is off.  It is always: TURN computer on, turn monitor on --- turn computer off, turn monitor off.....

I only have it on maybe 2 hours a day.

Am I just unlucky?  I do have power surge protectors etc...
Probably just unlucky.  Why do you turn the monitor off?  All monitors are Energy Star, meaning the computer turns them on and off.  When "off" a small amount of electricity is used to enable a fast turn on.Well, it DOES conserve SOMEWHAT electricity... Not much, but a little... If I leave mine on overnight, and press the button in the morning, you can hear that "sizzling" noise, but not as LOUD, or anything... There is no need to keep it on. Hey, I turn mine off every night as well.

[glb]FLAME[/glb]OH. Almost forgot... Have you tried switching brands for your monitor? Maybe you just have a bad brand?

The pin that broke(part of the 40-pin lineup) is the last pin closest to the area of pins where you SET slave and master functions.
please respond asap...

thanks for any help

paoloHello my dear, how are you? Dont WORRY if it is the last corner pin. Have you try to attach it to the motherboard? If no then, do attach it and tell me what HAPPEN. If it doesn't WORK then yes, it is possible to change the circuit board of the hard disk with an old but exactly same board. But I am sure that it will work and you wont need to replace the circuit board.
Take care of you and others and be happy.
D Wahabit is the pin on the actual hard drive.  so i can not attach cable to the hard drive itself...the motherboard does not RECOGNIZE it...

Solve : Can't view drives in My Computer?

Answer»

I cannot read from a cd on either my installed cd reader/writer or on my external one.  Neither of these show up as icons in the MY COMPUTER window.  I think that this is my fault.  The last time that I USED one of them I CHECKED 'Take no Action' and 'Remember This' in that annoying little box that comes up whenever you insert a cd into the drive.  I'd like to change that SETTING but can't find where to do it.  I don't EVEN know if this is what the problem is.  I'm wondering if someone can help me before I turn grey.
Thanks!firstly take no action and remember this wouldn't cause this kind of problem. secondly check if the devices are still enabled or even recognised by your p.c in the device manager. you can find this by
---------------------
Right clicking on my computer - properties
hardware
device manger.

--------------------
check to see if your c.d drives are there. if they are disabled or there is an error with them then you will see a red CROSS or a yellow exclamation mark, if they arn't installed there will be an yellow question markDarn...I kinda thought that it wouldn't be that easy.
In Device Manager:
1.  My external drive shows but with an exclamation mark beside it.  It is enabled.  I should reinstall it?
2.  My pc disc device doesn't show up at all anywhere.  This is no big deal if I can get the external working again.  I would like to know why this happened though.

Thanks for your help!the exclamation means that it isn't installed properly. try re-installing the device. it could be a hardware fault in which case you may have to get a new c.d drive. check the warrenty. Thanks so much.  I'll do that.  That's probably it.  But now where did my tower cd go to?  Do you think that it's fried?Well, a couple of new developments.  I got a message that the drivers were either corrupt or missing.  I took the drivers from another computer and put them in...still nada.  I figured that I might have to get a new external cd drive.  I decided to cleanup my computer and get rid of programs that I really wasn't using.  I wasn't using Nero so I uninstalled it.  Guess what?!  All of my drives (forgot that I also had an external dvd which also wasn't being seen) are now working!  Could it be a flaw in Nero?
I'm now afraid to install it again.

My computer does not turn on.  After some time it will turn on.  It does not turn on immediately after I switch on/off several times it will turn onWhen you say "turn on", do you mean that the power button is pressed, the fans and other internal components do NOT turn on? Or do you mean that the components are running, but your screen stays black?

[glb]Flame[/glb]this happen to me with win xp and i had a VIRUS, i took it to the shop and they reinstalled the wins and gave me a nice virus protection avg. 7.0Other components like the cd-rom and fans is running.  the only proble is that when I switch the power button the screen remains black and the LED indicator those not light UPDO you have virus protection installed?

[glb]Flame[/glb]OK, I must ASK the obvious because I have seen it happen too many times.

1. Did you turn on the power to the monitor.
2. Is the power PLUGGED into the monitor, both into an outlet into the wall and the back of the monitor?  Are both ends secure?
3. Is the monitor cable attached to the PC?

ty
melissaFirst try a DIFFERENT PS/2 mouse...  If you have no problems with that, chances care, your old mouse was dying.  If you still have problems, there's a fair chance that it's a driver problem or a problem with the PS/2 PORT...  In that case, try a USB mouse.Hold up here.... Before we TROUBLESHOOT... You FORGOT to give us "key information".... What kind of problems are you experiencing?

Solve : "line-in" noise-re-posted as member?

line-in noise/soundcard (grounding?)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a fairly well known and expensive soundcard in my machine and it works perfectly well except when I connect anything to the "line-in" port in the back of it.

Whenever I do this, no matter what kind of cable or device I use, I get humming noise which only goes away if I turn down the volume or mute the "line-in" option on the software mixer that came with the card.

I have followed all of the troubleshooting advice in the manual that shipped with my computer as well as all the troubleshooting advice I could find on the web site of the manufacturer who made the soundcard but none of this has helped.

Neither of these manufacturers has  helped me because each one tells me to contact the other and neither of them want to do anything unless I first commit to spending an undeterminate amount of money for their assistance (which I cannot).

I spoke to someone who works at a well respected stereo shop and when I described the problem he told me that it was most likely the case that "something is not gounded".

I moved the soundcard to an alternate slot, tried connecting different cables and devices to the "line-in" port but this didn't change anything.  I carefully examined every connection on the motherboard with my eyes for anything that MIGHT look out of the ordinary but found nothing.  I also spent over  an hour searching the internet with combinations of the words "soundcard, "line-in", "noise", "hum", and "grounding" but found nothing that helped.

I have the latest drivers, and have checked for "device conflicts" (irq etc) in the OS's CONTROL pannel several times but found none. I ran all the proprietary diagnostic TOOLS that were specifically designed and were pre-installed on my computer by the manufacturer as well as a diagnostic tool which was specifically designed by the manufacturer of my soundcard and which is included in it's installation cd.  All of these tools said that there was no problem whatsoever with any of my any of my hardware despite the noise.

Can anyone be of assistance? Quote

A cable and no device will do this...it's normal.
Device out must be matched to line in or it will hum.
The hum only occurs when a device is connected to the sound canrd and not when no device is connected.
do you have the PROPER drivers......humming ......feedback......do you have mike attached to your pc....
