Solve : new case or not?

Answer»

so with my new upgrade im doing im GOING to ask your opinion if i should change the case or not its modded    i think the case window is a bit on the tooooo big side  and some of the sides DONT close very well i also think i put too many fans in and there is too MUCH dust and cable managment isnt the easiest thing to do aother then that its great has 2 ccfls el wire wround the window led case feet but its not all metal so i cant spray paint it or anything ill give you some pics

the case is totally up to you. we dont know your preferences for case color/design nor do we know what kind of hardware you plan on putting in it.

personally, for the case you have now, i think you have way too many 80mm fans. when possible, its best to use 120mm fans. also, the 3 80mm fans mounted on your side panel need properly sized intakes holes; its usually best to carve out the ENTIRE hole and simply mount a metal fan grill over the fan(s) for safety. i never got  to that part yet... do you think it looks good or not?Sure...looks good. Quote from: computeruler on July 23, 2008, 05:36:29 PM

do you think it looks good or not?

in my honest opinion, it looks like a mess. you need to get acquainted with zap straps (aka cable ties). cable management is a pretty big issue with computers, not only do loose, criss-crossed, cables look bad, they also impede airflow. TRY to run all your power cables together as much as possible and try to keep them out of the main airstream. if you have too much slack in your wires wrap them in a neat loop and try to get them out of sight (the bottom of the case and any vacant 5.25" drives are good spots to get rid of wire slack). also, that 12" CC light should be moved to either the top corner of the case or the bottom corner of the case, it looks really bad where it is right now.ya the cable managment i just never really got to that along with the top window/fan and variou other things i agree the ccfls do need to be moved guess ill keep it

Solve : no a-h drives show (cd or sd slot)?

Answer»

I have had a vista LAPTOP for several months.  Everything has WORKED great.   All of a sudden, my CD drive and sd card slot don't show in My Computer and aren't working (the section for a-h drives is not showing in My Computer - at first I thought it was just the cd, but DISCOVERED tonight the card slot isn't working either).  When just considering the cd drive, I read a little, and though not understanding any of it, checked the BIOS for the cd drive, and did not see it.   I also removed the upper and lower filters.   No luck.

oh. and everyonce in a while it freezes inexplicably.  I'm wondering if it's trying to read a drive and can't?

Thoughts?     PLEASE HELP.    I manage medical care for one of my kids from this computer.  I need it to keep working!

I have had a vista laptop for several months.

Sounds like your computer OUGHT to be under warranty. If so, contact your computer maker so that you don't void your warranty (by following well intentioned advice).

If not under warranty, reply back, so that people can help.

Best of luck!

Solve : Add a case fan??

Answer»

Intel p4 1.6Ghz - dual hard drives, cd writer, floppy drive, Nvidea Ge force mx 400 video card, modem, USB pci card.  PSU Novia 300w max dc output on 12v rail 15A.  Intel D845BG mobo.

Can I add a 12v 0.14A case fan using a spare MOLEX CONNECTOR without overloading the 12v rail?

I know that replacing the psu with a gruntier one would be ideal but what you see is what I got.

While temps are not going outside ranges according to Intel Active Monitor and Speedfan they are in the upper 25% so thought to take precautions with summer approaching.

Great - the fan you described will only add ≈2 watts, and, of course, .14 amps.

Solve : Combo IDE/SATA External HD Enclosure (USB2 Powered)-Seen as USB2 Device??

Answer»

I know this is very likely a dumb question.  I've ordered a combo IDE/SATA HD Enclosure.  Since that enclosure has IDE and SATA ports for connection of the HARD DRIVE being used, does Windows see the device as either IDE or SATA, or does it simply see it as one of a number of USB2 devices?  No burning reason for the question - just technical curiosity, which I suppose could wait until I receive and CONNECT up the enclosure. In my case Win XP, Windows just shows the hdd as a USB drive. Thanks, drmsucks.  I really couldn't imagine that Windows could see the drive as anything other than a USB2 drive, but what do I know?BUT, if you use the SAFELY Remove Hardware routine to shut it down - the drive is properly identified, not as IDE or SATA, but MODEL.

Solve : Buying new Pc?

Answer»

Well.. Im planning on buying a new pc from Cyberpower.com, since Im 15 years old, my knowledge of Pcs is quite limited.

I have some questions regarding the system components I am about to order.
Please Help me, Thank you

For the Extra Fan Case Upgrade:

1. I picked 2x Extra Case Cooling Fan. Is this neccessary? Or do I need more?
Are there fans inside the original case I picked?

Raidmax Sagitta II Mid-Tower 420W Gaming Case w/ Side-Panel Window

2. For The Memory I picked
Req.DDR2 MainBoard)4GB (2x2GB) PC6400 DDR2/800 Dual Channel Memory

Would 4x1Gb be the same in its efficiency?

3. For The OS I picked:

None- Format Hard Drive Only.
Im confused on whether or not it comes with a system like Windows Vista Preminium 64 bit or SOMETHING. The other choices are the installation discs themselves ( atleast I think it is due to its heavy price) and I dont really need that.

4. Are there gonna be Taxes? That would boost the price up to 1700...

5. Lastly, I would like to know your opinions on the system components I picked.  Any components that I should degrade to save some money? Or PERHAPS upgrade something because of its essentialness. Since My dad isnt optimistic about spending $1500

Quote

I picked 2x Extra Case Cooling Fan. Is this neccessary?

no. you only need 1 extra 120mm case fan for the front intake area of the case, other then that, the case comes with the side panel 120mm fan and the exhaust 120mm fan.

***NOTE***

when installing the front 120mm intake fan, be sure to have it facing the correct way. it should be sucking air in from the front of the case and blowing it out towards the back. installing the fan backwards can actually cause the comp to get hotter.

Quote
Are there fans inside the original case I picked?

yes, the side panel 120mm intake fan and the rear 120mm exhaust fan are included with the case.

Quote
Would 4x1Gb be the same in its efficiency?

no. you would have the same amount of RAM, but 2x2gb is more efficient.

Quote
None- Format Hard Drive Only.

this means your hardrive will be formatted (most likely in NTFS format), but an OS will not be installed. only choose this option if you already own a version of windows and you can legally install it on the new computer.

Quote
Are there gonna be Taxes?

absolutely, there might also be shipping costs if you are having it delivered.

i would like to know the price of each individual component you listed (to make sure you are not getting ripped off. if you could supply a link to each component that would be awesome) and the make/model of the FOLLOWING components...

-power supply
-RAM
-monitor
-harddrive
-flash media reader/writer

i will go more into detail on your current hardware when i have the prices/details of each component. for now, there is one big thing i spotted...

Quote
NetWork: Intel Pro Gigabite 10/100/1000 Network Card

your motherboard comes with its own RJ45 LAN jack. you do not need this card unless you plan on directly connecting to another PC.I picked the components from Cyberpower.com, so i do not know the exact price.

http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Intel_Core_2_Quad_SLI_Custom_Build_Configurator#configurator_top

I would really like to reduce the price to $1500 including tax.

Thank you for the help
ok here are some suggestions for lowering the price without taking too much of a performance hit.

1. downgrade the CPU to the Q6600
2. stick to the stock intel CPU heatsink
3. downgrade to the 8800GTS 512mb video card

just wondering what you guys think...if this'll go GOOD together:

ASUS M2N-MX SE Plus AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 Micro ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Brisbane 2.6GHz Socket AM2 65W Dual-Core Black Edition Processor Model

SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD502lJ 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
300W PSU

and do i need to buy smaller cpu cooler or will the one that comes with the processor fit inside the case? it's cool too if you guys see any problems for me...other than how little space i'll have to work withWoah, THATS a lot of computer!

512mb video card, 4Gb of RAM, 500Gb HD, I would take those any day!

yea...i like it a lot too.  and on newegg it's only something like $500.  but maybe i should rephrase the question.  i was just wondering if it's all going to fit inside the case which is one of them slim microatx ones...and if the parts are even gonna go well together.what is your budget for your new computer and what do you plan on using it for? i could put something together for you.actually my budget is around $5-600.  i'm pretty happy with the this system i got put together (i just gotta wait for payday for this thing to become reality).   but if you got better suggestions as to replacement parts that are better for the ones i have listed that'd be straightok, just one question...does it have to be a microATX case? you are killing alot of your upgrade options by using a microATX case.it doesn't have to be microatx as long as when it's finished, it's as small as possible.  the space it needs to go into barely fits an asus vento case...and i can't open the drawers on the dresser next to it because of the monstrosity of the case i decided to go with when i was in korea (looked real nice at the time...and i had the space for it).  i'm in the military and live in barracks if that gives you any idea of the space that i have to work with.  so if you have any suggestions other than the microatx that would save me space i'd appreciate it a lot...i PREFER full atx as well because of what you said...upgradeability.how much room do you have for the comp and does the area you wish to place it have adequate ventilation?

in the meantime, here is a list of ATX computer cases that you could choose from. the dimensions of the case should be in the specifications.

Solve : Live Streaming Security Cameras - HELP!?

Answer»

Hey everyone.

I'm trying to get some input on a system my company is working on. I'm hoping someone here has dealt with it before and MAY be able to point me in the right direction.

We are BUILDING a website for a BUSINESS. That's no problem. But, they would like to setup video security cameras within their office and live stream them to the website (public site, not INTERNAL). Does anyone know of any good systems we could set them up with? The most important thing, is that this system must have some good software and be fairly user friendly so we can figure out how to stream it to the site.

I appreciate any ideas! Thanks!I havent any experience with that kind of stuff but I did a search and, to me, some good LOOKING results came up:

Solve : Buying used RAM??

Answer»

I'm looking to upgrade my computers RAM and also hoping to save some money by purchasing used RAM. Is there any disadvantages to used RAM? Does it perform the same as it would new?

ThanksIt either works or it doesn't!  Make sure that you have return privileges with a reputable person/company.

When you get it, TEST it overnight with Memtest86: http://www.memtest.org/. ANY error is reason to return the memory.

Best of luck - other forum members may have suggestions as to where to buy used RAM. Check out Ebay you can FIND some good deals on both new and used ram just make sure the seller has a HIGH possitive feed back rating.I have bought from pacific_memory twice recently and they are very
reliable. See below link.

http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZpacific_memoryEspecially with today's RAM prices, I'd never buy used one.
$25 for 1 gig? What are you gonna save? 5 bucks?Go to your local computer shop or check out Newegg.com or TigerDirect.com.  Ram is cheap nowadays.  No advantages to buying used over new.  Just be sure to check the memory using memtest86 or ANOTHER mem check.  Any kind of error and I would return it.

Solve : best specs??

Answer»

what are the best processors out there? the newest is what i need. also can you guide me to the best RAMS and video cards, sound cards, motherboards.Best CPU: Core 2 Quad X6850
Best RAM: DDR3 RAM PC3-14400
Best video card: Nvidia Geforce 8800 Ultra
Best sound card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro
Best motherboard: one that supports all of the above, plus Quad SLI, a 1333MHz FSB, has superb overclocking features, etc etc

Will any of those be the best option for you?  I don't know, but probably not.
If you tell us exactly what you're looking for (e.g. I am looking to build a new PC for gaming and have a budget of $2000) then we'll be able to help you much more. It's really impossible to give out the best specs as everyone has their own opinion...(AMD/Intel especially)

However if you are looking for the best motherboard to date...I would wait a while, for the new boards called Skulltrail...Due to be released by Intel, these boards have 4X PCI-e 16x slots, up to 8GB of DDR2, and best of all...TWO slots for Intel quadcore CPU's!! (Thats 8 cores!!) :O

Cant remember where i saw it but a quick google came up with this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_SkullTrail

Intel's Skulltrail is a motherboard platform aimed at the enthusiast pc market. It is built off of Intel's X38 motherboard model. The primary difference between thye X38 and Skulltrail is the dual sockets that allows for two processor cores to operate on the same system. This means that, given current technology, Skulltrail can operate eight cores on one system.

It looks awesome

What do you look for in CPU to tell if its good or not? That shiny holographic sticker on the box for one thing...I mean in terms of parameters. The series is the main thing, for example Core 2 DUO, Pentium 4, Athlon X2.
The speed in GHz is important, and so is the FSB speed - the higher the BETTER.
Finally, the cache is measured in Mb (the more the better) and the number of cores (1 core isn't so common nowadays, dual core seems to be the main standard, and quad core is becoming the standard for high end PCs).  If you're a heavy multitasker you should go for more cores.
Does that help you out?Yes, thank you. You're welcome.
Feel free to post again with any more questions you may have. While the QX6850 may be the "best" CPU right now, it's definitely NOT something you should be looking at.

thnx alot and keep postin to tell what you know!!!

8Gb DDR3-1600RAM
Intel Core 2 Quad QX9775
3x Nvidia GTX280
As many WD Raptor drives as possible in RAID 0
Sound card - not sure, maybe the Xonar
Some set of 7.1 surround speakers
G15 keyboard, G9 mouse
Thermaltake Toughpower 1200W PSU
As many DVDRW or BLURAY drives as can be crammed in
Several large monitors

Solve : What is the difference b/w dualcore and core 2 duo processors??

I WOULD like to know the technical concept.http://www.chotocheeta.com/2007/09/01/difference-between-intel-core-2-duo-vs-intel-dual-core-vs-intel-pentium-d/

Quote

Intel Core 2 Duo processors are next gen processors from Intel on 65 nm platform… developed from Ground up with new Architecture called Core… so they are WHOLE new Processors just Jump like Pentium 2 to Pentium 3 or Pentium 4… Expect one Core 2 Duo Lowest End Processors like E4400/E4300 taking up and beating Intel Pentium D 3.8 GHz ones with ease … runs *censored* cool and SUPER over clocker…

Intel Dual Core Processors are just launched striped down version of Core 2 Duos.. there are 2 in Market for Desktop range, E2140 runs at 1.6 GHz with 1 MB L2 and 800 MHz FSB and E2160 with 1.8 GHz with same specs of E2140…. these are not Pentium D rather they are same batch like Core 2 Duo based on the new Core Technology…. they perform same like Core 2 Duos but they were launched with a very low price to counter the market of super low cost but high performer AMD X2 range LINE up to AMD X2 4000….
Dual core CPUs are CPUs with two cores.
Intel Core 2 Duo CPUs are a specific line of dual core CPUs.
Regarding the source Broni used, that line is actually called the Pentium Dual Core - not to rip a hole in you or anything, but CPU naming is confusing enough.

Solve : HDD Not recognised, clicking sound??

Answer»

Hi,
Wondering if you COULD help....

I did a fresh install of XP and have an additional HD (Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 INTERNAL HD). When I did the fresh install, i made sure the HD was unplugged. So then I got it all sorted and plugged in the HD. Since the install, my computer BSOD'ed a few times, but i fixed that. Unfortunately, since it happened, my computer is not RECOGNISING my HD (and is running pretty noisily and overheating too!). I'm pretty sure the HD is on it's way out, but I have some really important docs on it which I need. Can anyone give any advice as to how to get it worked for about 20 minutes or so (at the least) to get my stuff from it?!

ThanksStop using the drive immediately

The best method for this is hooking it up as a slave drive but you need to have everything prepared ahead of time because in some cases you will get ONLY ONE chance.

Make sure the other drive has enough room for the large file transfers needed...trying to burn them instead of transferring them takes more time and improves the chance of it failing.

If it has been doing this awhile i'd suggest placing the drive in a Ziploc bag in the freezer for a few hours...this has been known to improve the read/write mechanisms running long enough to get the data off.

As i said be well prepared ahead of time and Good Luck. How do I hook it up as a slave drive?  I've heard about the freezer thing, but thought itn was a myth... how long should i freeze it for?

And also, if i do freeze it, will that make bios recognise it?

ThanksPut it in for a few hours like Patio said / take it out and hook it up to an external case (it's EASIER than putting it in the computer and having to set jumpers if you're not used to doing that kind of thing).

Quick as a bunny, when the computer sees the drive copy all your stuff to the good drive.  This may or may not work as I've had it happen both ways.

Good luck!

Big companies dont like to LEAK out info, and tend to only release info when they are ready to release the end product to avoid competitors cutting in on their PROFIT margins.

Solve : Hard Drive and Power Supply won't turn off with the rest of the computer?

Answer»

Any help with this would be appreciated; I've asked a techie friend for some help but to only partial avail.

About a year ago or so, my computer stopped being able to turn off completely.  I didn't notice it at first because I used to just leave the thing on all the time.  I wasn't terribly power conscientious, but one day, I noticed that turning the computer off (either from within Windows or by holding down the on/off button on the front of my tower) didn't cause the power SUPPLY fan to stop or the hard drive LED in the front to go out.   I also didn't do anything about it.

Then, a few months ago, my computer started turning on and off randomly.  Holding down the on/off button would have no effect either way, and the computer would turn back on of it's own volition.  I took it to my techie friend and he said it was a power supply problem, probably a combination of the FACT that my power supply stays on even when I turn the system off and the fact that my surge protector is out of date.  It's most likely been exposed to a few power surges unprotected.  So we replaced it with a spare that he had lying around.  However, even after replacing it, it still had the weird issue of not turning off even when the computer is SHUT down.  He checked the BIOS to see if there were any settings that were wrong, but he said it looked fine.  Of COURSE, turning off the switch on the power supply still turns it off, so he told me to just do that whenever I wanted to turn the computer off, after I've shut everything down.  He said the issue might be a problem between the power supply and the motherboard not being able to properly communicate.

Now, my computer works fine (just over six years old), but I'm wondering if anyone knows of something I can do to iron out this issue, so I don't have to wait for my PC to shut down and then reach into the back to turn off the PS (short of buying a new motherboard.)  Has anyone else seen this problem?  Does my friend's prognosis sound right?

Here's some of my computer's pertinent specs:

Manufactured by vpr Matrix, inc. (affiliated with Best Buy)
Windows XP Home Edition (Service Pack 2)
Pentium 4 CPU 1.8 Ghz
1 GB of RAM
Antec Basiq 350 watt power supplyWill it shut down in the safe mode?I just tried shutting it down from safe mode.  As before, the computer shuts down, but the power supply and hard drive lights still stay on.In the bios settings [power mgmt] look for a wake on lan sselection if enabled disable it. Thanks for helping me so far, xavier.

In my BIOS settings, I have the following options and settings:

After Power Failure      [Stay Off]
Wake on PME              [Stay Off]
Wake on Modem Ring  [Stay Off]Leave  it that way on all 3 . I would set the BIOS at best known config. or if your bios says set at default. Is this PC a home build? The PC is manufacturer made, but I've upgraded it a few times (to 1024 MB of RAM and a graphic card upgrade.)

I've set the BIOS to default.I had this problem last year with one of my other computers.
All I did was System Restore to a date before the problem.

Is that possible with you?

Solve : Upgraded Dell Inspiron to Win XP, worked fine then display went haywire?

I have an old Dell Inspiron 5000 model ppm that came with window 98, I had the error MESSAGE "cannot find explorer.exe, REINSTALL windows" and I installed window xp onto the computer. It worked perfectly and must faster than I had expected for about three hours, I then shut it down and upon start, the screen was DISTORTED with inch long, horizontal lines. It is so bad that I really cannot access anything on the computer to fix it. I can't get into BIOS because it is the same there and therefore I cannot startup in safe mode either. Help!  Have you tried a different monitor?Yes, I have. It shows up the same. I have been tweaking the properties a bit and it helped a smidge but it is still quite unusable. If another monitor does the same THING, then I would think it a motherboard issue.
Open your computer up and blow all of the dust out. Now see if you can get into BIOS.Before we BLAME it on the motherboard...do you think we should take a look at the video card?

Solve : One printer on 2 computers?

Answer»

Can I hookup one printer so that both computers can print off it? I am using a KVM switch for 2 computers, but it does not allow for a printer. The printer is a NEW HP DeskJet F4140, and it does not support wireless, just USB.knarlybill,KVM switches are only designed for a mouse,a keyboard and a MONITOR (sometimes also sound) but not printers. However YES you can SHARE a printer with more than one computer.Go to your control panel and select "printers" and you will see an "allow sharing" option .Then you will need to define the printer on the 2 computers.truenorthThanksAltervative is to use Parallel or USB "A B Switch" if no networking is available.Parrellel switch would be better for sharing it. just install the drivers for the printer on each computer and hook up the parrellel cable from the printer and the two COMPS to the switch and there yea go.

Solve : New processor Problems?

Answer»

Hey I have an old Dell 2350, WinXP, 256 RAM, up to date on all updates (as of today) w/a 2 ghz Intel Celeron.  It's old, slow, and bogs down if i I have more than 2 regular PROGRAMS open.  But I can't afford a whole new computer, so I decided that I could probably hold off a while if I got a faster processor, some more memory, and reformatted.  So I got a hold of an Intel Pentium 4, 2.8 ghz.  I popped it in, and now my computer won't fully boot with it.  It showed power, and the FAN came on, but no boot.  So I had to put the old one back in.  I'd like to know what I got wrong when I bought it... should I have stuck with another Celeron (shudders)?  Is there a setting I need to fix before installing it?  If you need more info about my computer... let me know (and know how to find it).  I'm not a computer genius, but know how to find stuff if someone just tells me.  Like, I've installed a lot of things on my computer before, so just let me know what you need to know.Did you check to SEE if the new processor is compatible with your system?

Before swapping processors, it's a good idea to see if your motherboard and BIOS will support it - check with Dell.

Seems like the best thing that you could do would be to increase RAM to 1 GB - again, check with Dell to find out what is compatible with your MB.

Best of luck!what do i need to check to see if they're compatible?  is there a label somewhere?  anything?I'd start with the Dell website, pretty self-explanatory; the memory question ought to be readily solved by checking the website, but you may also need to call them about the processor upgrade.

EDIT: Take a look here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim2350/specs.htm#1101572

Assuming this is your system it doesn't look as if your new processor is supported - I'd check with them to see if there has been a BIOS update that would allow your new processor.

Note that this also answers the memory question.ok, so basically the fastest processor i can run on this hunk of metal is a P4 2.5 ghz or a Celeron that is 2.3?  geesh.  that sucketh.  guess i'll throw this 2.8 on ebay.

luckily, i know about memory.  this thing came with 128 DDR, so i bought a second stick of it to get 256.  I have a 512 coming in the mail already... so i'll end up with 640, which should help at least a little.

i'll probably still spend a weekend reformatting... i've had this thing for over 6 years now.  Reformatted once, but you know how over time so much junk gets on there, so many programs added and removed, that there's probably junk that can't otherwise easily be smoothed out.  So half the weekend will be spent burning all my important stuff to cds and the other half updating windows and reinstalling everything.   sounds like so much fun.Enjoy!

May be worth a call to Dell before you fire up Ebay - a BIOS upgrade MAY allow you to use your processor.

Best of luck!i did the bios upgrade from dell.com and it didn't fix it    oh wellSorry that the BIOS upgrade didn't help.

Solve : Power outage, then computer wont start?

Answer»

We had a power problem that tripped all circuit breakers in the house.  After that, computer will not power on.  Computer is Dell Dimension 5100 desktop with Windows XP Home edition, about 3 years old.  Is there a power circuit button on computer that may have been turned off by the event that tripped all circuit breakerss in the house?
If so, is there a way to turn it back on? Do you have a surge suppressor?  Did it reset...or do you have to reset it?

the surge suppressor has reset and works.  There is a green light on inside the back of the CPU, so the  CPU is getting some power, but the  start button on front does nothing and does not light like it used to when  the computer was on.It's possible the power supply took a dump.  Have you tried troubleshooting the power supply?

I tried turning it off but nothing happened. I unplugged it and replugged,  it started but did not boot.  I searched the net and found a site that said to unplug the 20 pin connector and short the green pin.  I did this and the fan  did not power up.  The indication was that the motherboard was good, but the power supply is toasted.  Is this an accurate solution?  Thanks for your support. My problem, which started this subject, turned out to be a power supply problem.  After ordering a refurbished one from Dell, it was installed and computer now TURNS on.  So your problem sounds similar, GI Joe.  Saviour's message of June 22, 8:08pm has a good link to power supply troubleshooting.

Solve : 1TB SATA USB DRIVE... Need Help!?

Answer»

I have a Western Digital My Book World Edition WDG1NC10000N 1TB. This thing is a piece of crap! Does anyone know if I can open it up and convert it to a usb drive? Is it just a regular HD on the inside? It is just way too slow and you can only transfer 500mb at a TIME or it will LOCK up! You can read what others are saying about it here...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136196
Thanks for any help you can give me.Ok, I took the thing apart and found a 1 TB SATA hard drive. I put it in a SATA drive USB enclosuer but the computer won't assign it a drive LETTER. Can anyone help?Heres what I got with a search:
http://search.live.com/results.aspx?q=installing+new+hard+drive&form=QBRE

But I thought this would be the best out of the list:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/131231-1/article.htmlIn my experience the My Book software is garbage and is best avoided...
Did you install it originally ? ?Yes, I did. Someone told me I would NEED to format it to get it to show a drive letter. I was trying to avoid that because I have a lot of data on it. Anyway I put it back together so I could back it up.

Solve : What cable do i need for my monitor??

Answer»

just about to go to PC world. but i got a newbie question, what is it that i ask them for?
it's a "Targa Visionary LCD 19-2", with Audio in, DVI in and D-Sub sockets...

i have none of the cables... or the power cable, just an old power cable for an older screen (that should work ok, right? (not sure how much power it needs, doesn't say))

what would be ideal is if i could use this screen instead of my TV, for watching programs and playing my xbox.. the screens bigger than my TV
but if that can't be done i'll just use it as a PC monitor.
or for all 3 would be awsome if that is possible

thanks

Ted2Argh, don't go to PC World, they'll charge you around £40 (no, I'm not joking nor exaggerating).
What output do you have on your graphics card?
And yes, as long as the pins match up the older power cable should be FINE for it.i'm not sure of what all the outputs are called.. but the card is a SiS 650
think the socket is called HDMI? don't know.. the standard one, that's blue.. looks like this
o\\ . . . . . //o
   \\. . . . //
Sounds like it's VGA - 15 pins, right?
If so, you'll need a VGA cable.ok, thanks
so a VGA cable to a.........? the DVI in.. or D-Sub? i now know one end is a VGA but what's the other end have to be
i'm guessing the Audio is just a normal small jack to jack lead, got one of them.

also, do you or anyone know if i'm able to plug my xbox360 into this screen?
theres no scart lead socket or anything else just the 3 sockets i stated above.. so wondering if theres some kind of adapter i can buy?The VGA cable will only go in one hole at each end, it has a VGA connector at each end.
One end will go into your graphics chip, the other into the D-Sub port on your monitor.
If you want to use the monitor speakers it's a 3.5mm jack to your sound card's output.

As for the Xbox, if I'm not mistaken that USES HDMI, so you'll need a HDMI to VGA or DVI adapter.perfect, thanks calcum.

and yep, the xbox is HDMI.. ATLEAST on the xbox end it's a HDMI.. the other end of the cable is 3 jacks (white, yellow, red) that has a scart adapter also..
so i'll have to look for adapter for one or the other that i can put in the DVI in.
going to be happy if i can find get this adapter
i actualy forgot about the xbox and it being high definition.. sadly i don't think the screen is high definition though.. then i'm not sure.. the only sites i could find on the screen were in anouther language..

and INCASE anyone is wondering "no cables? knows nothing of the screen?"
no. it's not stolen
sadly a relative of mine is loosing his eye sight.. was dopped off to me.. without the cables.
anyway, thanks again calcum. The screen will probably be HD, most monitors far surpass even the latest TVs in terms of resolution.
And you're welcome.a VGA cable is also called a D-SUB

ahh ok, yeah that's the one.. my little attempt of drawing one was a little off, HUH
i'm just used to monitors that have the cable perminatly attatched to the back.. probaly better way, can't loose em' then.
i coulda' guessed the VGA cable goes into the "D-Sub" as they look exactly the same.. just wanted to make sure..

as for the PC world advice, i know..  but i prefer to buy hardware from a shop, then online... don't ask.. i'm just stubborn like that.. i like it from a shop.. that way i get a recipt and can take it back plus theres not needing to worry about hackers taking my credit card lol.. then again theres theifs on the street too.. but atleast i get the chance to smack em' one if they do .
(just kidding, i'm not paranoid.. it's the recipt i like )

although, i may have no choice to buy online for this adapter for my xbox360.
PC World is the only computer shop i know of in my area  Quote from: Ted2 on July 11, 2008, 12:35:14 PM

Solve : Wireless adapter is not working?

Answer»

Hi,

recently, my wireless adapter suddenly stopped working. it happened at the same time my standby button greyed out.

i've got an intel (R) Wireless WiFi link 4965AGN

and intel 965 chipset.

i'm RUNNING xp pro sp3, and again, i can't remember what i did to CAUSE the change.

funnily enough, my wired internet is working.

any suggestions will be appreciated.  Are your drivers all installed properly?JXY,I had a very similar problem some time back with a "Trendnet" wireless adapter and a few things became apparent from that episode. If you do have a problem where there is a loss of what was a previously working unit then: uninstall the software associated with the DEVICE (from add/remove programs). Then PAYING particular attention as to whether you should leave the hardware not plugged in (was the situation in my case) reinstall the software (again paying close attention to if there is a specific item to be clicked on for whatever the operating system it is to be associated with). At some point it should say "you may now connect the hardware".That sequence in my case was what became necessary to get it working again. Also changing the USB port might help. I also recommend a phone call to the manufacturer if the previous fails. I have used that route with another brand of wireless router and was helped immensely by their tech support. Also some highspeed service providers will help (but not always--they usually will refer you to the router manufacturer). Goodluck, truenorththnx for the responses. :p

i have uninstalled the drivers and re-installed them, to no avail.

but, i should probrably make a few things clear. my wireless adapter is built in to my laptop, it's not connected via usb port. Also, i'm not talking about router problems either. If i boot into vista (dual boot), i can access wireless networks fine. It's just XP for some reason.

about the drivers, i'll try re-installing them again. However the one i've found on the net haven't helped so far.

will keep trying.

Solve : Is my processor compatible for Windows XP Professional 64-bit SP2??

Processor: Intel Celeron M 1.5Gh?

So is it compatible?

I know these questions are supposed to be in OS subtopic, but I'll just go along with the thread.

Q: It is said that running in x64 bit is faster, does it apply to the whole process of my laptop? I mean every application running.
Q: What's the downside? In this case I'm a normal home user. Is it worth it to upgrade to x64?

Thank YouXP 64 bit is for a 64 bit processor. There would be no advantage to running XP 64 on a 32 bit celeron processor. Quote from: hmar on July 08, 2008, 09:55:51 AM

So is my processor a 32 or 64 bit processor? Where can I refer to?as far as I know, that processor is 32 bit. Look in the documentation that came with the computer. If it doesn't say, it is 32. Quote from: aleyshark on July 08, 2008, 08:07:04 AM

No, it's an x86 CPU and will not run an X64 OS.

Any applications coded specifically for X64 will run faster.  Any that aren't will run either the same speed, slightly slower, or not at all - this is rare though.  64 bit OSes can access more than 4GB of memory so if you had more than that (I doubt it as you have a laptop) then you would have access to more memory.

Q: What's the downside? In this case I'm a normal home user. Is it worth it to upgrade to x64?
X64 is for people who demand performance and/or run 64 bit applications and/or have lots of RAM.
On an older/slower machine like that, even if it was 64 bit capable, for your uses it wouldn't be worth it.

SORRY, that's incorrect - it's not possible, at all.I didn't mean to imply that it WASTHE way you phrased your post implies to me that XP X64 would run, but there would be no BENEFIT to running it over a 32 bit OS.
I'm just REINFORCING that it cannot be run at all.Understood, thanks everyone, especially Calum for the thorough explanationYou're welcome aleyshark, happy to help.

When data comes into the CPU it fills the CPUs Internal Registers. And from there it goes to the FPU and the ALU but does it go to the FPU FIRST and then it uses the ALU next?I dont really know anything about this sort of thing but I did a search for it:

New to the site. I tried a search but not sure what to search for. I just bought a 26 inch monitor and I cannot get the internet or displays to be in full screen. I can of course zoom and get each individual screen to be in full screen, but I must do that at every page. Also when you zoom, you lose the picture quality. Before when I went from the old 15" to a 19" the display just got larger, but now the display has STAYED the same size, just the screen is larger?? I use Mozilla as a web BROWSER, but this is the same on Internet Explorer.

Solve : Video card failure??

Answer»

Hi, new to forum and in need of advice please. I connected my PC to my TV via as s-video cable, and my PC desktop appeared (and still does appear) on my TV. However, after restarting my PC I lost any display on my monitor (including pre-Windows boot screens). The video card, which is only 4 months old, is an ATI RADEON 9600 XT. In the ATI Catalyst Control Center software, the TV and monitor are configured as 'Main'/'Clone' respectively. Any attempt to disable/remove the TV as a display does not restore graphics on the monitor. Before I return the card for replacement, I would like to know whether this appears to be a failed video card, or would the fact that I can view the PC desktop on my TV suggest that the card is fine and the problem lies elsewhere (misconfiguration, etc)? Thanks for any reply on this subject.

[recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]shouldn't your monitor be the default display rather then the TV?I would have thought so, but the only WAY to get video playback on TV was to set it up this way. Anyway, I have a tech support GUY coming tomorrow, and he says the video card hasn't failed, so I'll see what settings he uses.

is the other end of that wire pair connected to your CD(or DVD)drive or your motherboard? The other end of the wire disconnected from the sound card wire is connected the cd-rw.P17.sys is a part of the driver for SBLive, Audigy, and X-Fi cards. Did you run the uninstaller for the driver?

Since p17.sys is a driver for one of these cards, it has a tendency to expect the sound card to be present.I UNINSTALLED the SB software through the "Remove Programs" via the "Control Panel"

Can the uninstall be done another way?

CCleaner can help you unistall it and it will delete the reg entries that the unistallation left behind.

and about that wire, your going to need to plug it into your on-board Audio since that wire is for the sound output from the CD-RW drive.

Solve : Compaq Evo N1020v laptop?

Answer»

I have a Compaq Evo N1020v laptop that will not work when plugged in--it only works on battery power.  I know it isn't the power pack because I tried it on another system and it works fine on that system.  Is there anything I can replace easily on this laptop to fix this issue?

Thank you so much!If you remove the battery, will it BOOT while powered by the line adapter? When you say "will not work when plugged in--it only works on battery power" do you MEAN..

1. That even when pluged in it still runs off the battery.
or
2. That it will not even turn on when plugged in. Quote from: drmsucks on July 09, 2008, 05:34:31 PM

That's correct, even when it's plugged in it still only runs off the battery.  The battery is getting very low and when it's plugged in it doesn't charge at all.  Like I said in my first post, it's not the power adapter because I tried it on another model and it works fine.If the power adapter is good and plugged in to a known good outlet, I would suspect the jack on the laptop.

Is there an LED that lights (or should LIGHT) when plugged into the line adapter - does it light? Is there any looseness in the jack?

Very common for laptop jacks to need repaired/replaced. May be WORTH a trip to a good repair shop unless it is covered by warranty.

Good luck. The weirdest thing HAPPENED...I picked up the laptop and put it down and now the battery is charging and the adapter light is on.  I think something is loose in the jack.  Also, the floppy wasn't working and I tapped on it lightly and now that works too.  I think there are some loose connections inside this laptop.  I can't take it to the repair shop because this is a company laptop and I'm the PC repair girl.  I really don't like operating on laptops and this one is defintely out of warranty.  I think I'll leave it as it is since it seems to be working now.  If I have problems in the future, then and only then will I open it and operate on it.

Thanks everybody for your help!

Solve : Extremely slow DVD burn :( 10+ hours?

Answer»

Hi there

Here are my specs:
ASUS P4PE Motherboard
768MB DDR 266 RAM (3x 256MB 266)
Intel Celeron 2.5Ghz Cpu
4 Hdd's;
3x40 gb's at IDE 0 primary and slave and IDE 1 Primary
1x20Gb at onboard sata/ide controller
Lite-On DVD+/-R/RW 20x LH-0A1P (I think)

Anyway here is my problem:
lately I have had exremely slow dvd burns and I mean SLOW
I am using ConvertXtoDVD and yes its fully paid for no piracy issues!
As of lately I had to reinstall Windows XP due to the machine not letting me login fully and not going past the loading personal setings phase.
After this I have installed all chipset and gfx, sound DRIVERS ect...
after a few days I wanted to continue burning my school project onto DVD's and so REINSTALLED ConvX2DVD
suprise suprise the pre-converted files took almost 13 hours to burn! (4.16GB project)
During the burn I noticed it notes burning in PIO mode and so I took the STEPS to fix that, whice were to uninstall Intell Application Accelerator and uninstall primary and secondary IDE Channels and now the DVD drive sits ad UDMA 4 and the HDD's at UDMA5

I am retrying the burn and at this point it still takes 3 minutes to do .5% and by my calculations 1% is approx 6 mins so whole burn is about 6x100%=600 minutes = 10 hours!
I noted that this time it stated UDMA mode 4 in the log but still takes ages....

another thing to note is the light on the front of the burner doesn't flash at a constant rate like it used to but rather flashes at random every half secnd or so like rapid hunfire (sorry for description but best thing I could think of)

After this burn completes I will post the Log

Any ideas are appreciated!!

Kurtis Quote

Any ideas are appreciated!!
Ideas, eh?

It could be:
CD Driver Issues
Background Processes taking up all the CPU power
Bad file

CD Driver Issues
Make sure the driver is the most recent one. I would reinstall it.

Background Processes taking up all the CPU power
Anything seem like this in Task Manager (High Memory Usage or CPU %age)

Bad file
Converted file not converted properly or converted with problems.Well, solutions would be nice too

No drivers are installed for the DVD burner only windows standard and I did reinstall those.

Checked background processes...See atached

Bad file, just ported the VIDEO_TS Folder over to my work laptop (naughty I know)
and DVD burnt in under 15 mins

Now I realise I could just do all my copies with the laptop but I still want to fix this problem

Burn is at 7.1% on Desktop computer...started at 1:24 and the time is now 2:11

[recovering disk space -- ATTACHMENT deleted by admin]Try this.

Go to Start --> Run --> msconfig and press Enter.
Head over to the Startup Tab and uncheck as much as you can.
(note: if you uncheck something like a program, you can still use it without having to check it again but don't uncheck antivirus software.)

Restart the computer but don't do anything but burn the DVD.
Any IMPROVEMENT?OK I canceled the burn and did what you asked, tried again...no effect still just as slow

Could a faulty IDE cable be the culprit here?
It could be. Is it possible you can try to burn something smaller?

Are there any more burning modes available? A CD-R burned in under 10 mins (convert MP3 and burn) fast and easy...

Tried Nero burning the DVD...same effect

I forgot to mention during the school term that the dvd's burnt fine, e.g 15 mins got the whole projectHmmm.... It could be a problem with the burner, i'm not sure.

Not the DVD itself, right?I hope not it is still under warranty it was bought around this time last year 2 year warranty

So are there any thought on the fact that generally during burning (I noticed this with the CD-R that it flashes solidly on and off every second, but when burning the dvd is still flashes at the same time, but its like a strobe light when it's doing it

BTW i found out it is a Lite-On LH-20A1P (I was close )
I'm thinking of doing a Hard drive test in Sandra to see if it is the HDD not supplying it fast enough
I did some poking around in CXtDVD
and came up with this...Report Log
As you can see the first burns I did with it were straight PIO :S

[recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]Can you change the burning mode?Burn mode? I assume you mean back to PIO or something? To whatever

What are there?uhm..under dev manager there's UDMA if available and PIO

In ConvX there isnt any option but packet writing modes (SAO)

Are all of the modes slow?

Solve : Keyboard and mouse connection?

Answer»

Just acquired a new MSI motherboard and find no sockets for keyboard and mouse connection as I have on the old board. Do I have to use USB devices now and buy new ones or the serial port? I thought serial mice were old hat now anyway. Advice would be REALLY appreciated  Which MB?MS7923I can't find an MSI motherboard = MS7923.No - not listed on MSI site - that's why I'm asking for help. It has come with no documentation but it seems to be a cut down version of the MS7258 WITHOUT the mouse and keyboard sockets and only 2 PCI instead of 3 and PCIEx16 for graphics cardSorry - can't help.thanks for your support anyway, and I'll get myself a wirelesss USB desktop setI have a wireless MS and love it - although, every once in a while the cursor does erratic movements and I haven't figured out how to fix it!

Good luck! you DONT have to worry about a new keyboard and mouse. you can get a PS/2 to serial adaptor or you can get a PS/2 to USB adaptor that is way cheaper than getting a new keyboard and mouse Quote from: macdad- on July 10, 2008, 03:31:15 PM

Doesn't have the advantages, though!

I'm surprised that the board has serial but not PS2. that is interesting but now there seems to be more and more USB devices. but dont get me wrong, USB is great and fast.

Solve : Help with 780i "FF" grounding issue?

Answer»

I am currently trying to put together my first pc and am having trouble getting my pc to boot. When everything is in the case and plugged together the LED displays "FF" right upon start, and it remains stuck on the FF indefinitely.  I also get no display on my monitor. After reading several posts from other people, this either meant a grounding issue or a bad mobo. The way to test was to take everything out of the case (PLACE on cardboard) and plug in only 1 gpu and 1 stick of ram.
When I did this, the motherboard BOOTED just fine. I am now wondering what I am doing WRONG when putting everything in the case. I am looking for ideas to try and things that an amateur might overlook. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could install the drive as a slave or you could use the drive with a usb adapter but it all depends which is the best way for you.   And, most IMPORTANT, it depends on what your current hardware/software configuration is.  We don't know if you have a laptop or desktop, what operating system you are using or whether you have installed hardware already and know your way around inside your pc box.

Solve : adding memory causing problems?

Answer»

I installed 2 ddm2 PNY memory sticks of 1gb each into my Toshiba SATELLITE. The computer crashed constantly, fading to death via the BSOD  then sometimes requiring a system restore other times starting back up fine.

Does ANYONE have an idea what caused that to crash my laptop ? I would like to install one of the memory sticks (or both) into my Compaq C700, but maybe I should leave WELL enough alone.

Assume that you mean DDR2...

Without regard for the Compaq for the moment, does the Toshiba: a) support DDR2?, b) support 1GB modules in each slot?, c) support the type of memory that you installed - voltage, buffered/unbuffered, etc?I would START by verifying the memory is the correct type, size, density, and speed for your system.  Also ensure you're not exceeding the total memory your system supports.  Check your system documentation (look for it on manufacturer's website) or the "Crucial Memory Advisor™ tool" on the Crucial website.

I would then reseat and test the memory.  Install one memory module only and test it.  Then replace it with the other memory module and test it.  Then test both together.  If you get ERRORS, you might try the module in the other memory socket (in the unlikely event the socket has a problem).  You need to observe Electro Static Discharge (ESD) precautions when handling electronic components (like memory modules).

MemTest86 is a standalone program on a bootable floppy or CD that will rigorously test your memory.  It will run until you manually stop it (or the program crashes - not normal behavior).  Let it run for several complete passes.  You shouldn't have errors.

See MemTest86.  Follow the "Free Download" link (left hand side of web page) to either the floppy:
Download - Pre-Compiled Memtest86 v3.4a installable from Windows and DOS

or CD versions:
    Download - Memtest86 v3.4a ISO image (zip)

The "Technical Info" link (left hand side of web page) is the documentation for the program.

Solve : Shut Down Problems?

Answer»

I recently built a new PC and I am having an issue. When I shutdown the PC through the Vista Shut-down option my computer GOES through the normal "Shutting down screen" but it frequently does not shut completely down. All fans are still running and the Optical Drives are powered. Their is no hdd activity. Has anyone got any idea what might be causing this? It will eventually shut itself completely off. Sometimes within minutes but often it takes hours.

Things I have eliminated:

1)It is not in Sleep/hibernate mode
2)It is not the mobo
3)It is not my ram
4)It is not the HDD
4)It is not Vista or any of the updates

My system:

ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 Wolfdale 2.53GHz
OCZ StealthXStream OCZ600SXS 600W
mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
EVGA 512-P3-N801-AR GeForce 8800 GT 512MB

Thanks in advanceIf you boot to Safe Mode will you get a normal shutdown?

Has it always done this?

Is the computer on a network?I understand eliminating #1 but how were 2:3:4 and 4 eliminated as possibilities ? ? 2)RMA'd the first board. the 2nd one does the same thing
3)I swapped out the ram with known good sticks. Same problem
4)I installed my old Hdd which has xp loaded. Same problem

I have not tried with safe mode, but I will

It has always done this

No it is not on a networkMeaze: A quick Google search turned up others with this problem but I didn't see any solutions.

If it shuts down ok from Safe Mode, a driver or 3rd party (non MS) service may well be causing the problem - if driver, likely culprit is video - have you updated the video driver? Updated any others?

Is there anything recorded in Event Viewer - I think it's still called that in Vista; I'm on my XP side, I'll boot to Vista if you need a path or someone else will provide one. Let me know. Quote

COULD you please explain to me how to find my event viewer and what to look for? I have also googled this and found that it may indeed be a software issue and not a hardware issueKind of reaching here for any info that will SHED some light on this issue.

Click Start and enter Event Viewer, click on System, SCROLL to a time slightly before a prolonged shutdown event, is anything noted as you move through time to shutdown? If you click on an item in the top pane, an explanation will appear in the bottom pane. What about Safe Mode? Did it shutdown correctly?I am at work right now. I will try safe mode when I get home. Solve : Printer doesn't print colors.?

Answer»

Hi,

My printer model is HP Deskjet 1622. It was printing colors until I installed a new catridge. I did so bse the previous catridge ran out of INK. When I print a test page, the colors appear, but when I print a picture or any document that has color, it prints out in grayscale. I also can't find the grayscale/color option checkbox for the printer. Can someone pls help me SOLVE this problem?try to read your printer manualWhen you click print click on prefrences then go to color you'll SEE color options.  Just change it to how you want.Thanx for your help. I'll try to find my manual. I couldn't find the color options under the Preferences menu. Maybe a virus DISABLED it.   Its probably some where else but I think thats where HP usually has it.  All printers are differnt.  Try following,

Click   START -- SETTINGS -- PRINTERS AND FAXES

Now double click on the printer.

Click PRINTER menu and select PRINTING PREFERENCES

 Click COLOR tab

Uncheck PRINT IN GREYSCALE and select AUTOMATIC.

  Hopefully, should be resolved.

Solve : How to remove cmos battery in presario c300?

Answer»

Well I got this laptop yesterday, and it has issues, can't get online but thats the least of the problems. It came with a power on password, and it WORKED fine, now it won't work at all. I am making sure the caps is not on, but it tells me it is invalid, and shuts the comp down. I was told I can erase it if I remove the cmos battery for a few moments, then PUT it back in.....but I cannot find it. Please help!

the most I can tell you about this laptop is it has win XP.
The CMOS battery should be on the MOTHER board. Open your laptop and have a look on the motherboard.Ok yes I got brave because I found a repair MANUAL online that explained how to find the cmos battery and how to get it out....very very useful manual! So now I am doing a PC repair on the system hopefully that will fix the other probs, otherwise I'll be back!beforen you remove it....look for any jumpers next to it....and short acroos them.

Solve : computer not seeing flash drive?

Answer»

I don't know if this is the right place for this question, but I hope someone can help.

I am RUNNING Windows XP on my main computer.

I have a SanDisk 4 GB micro cruzer flash drive, with U3 Launchpad installed on it.

The flash drive WORKS FINE at my office computer (also running XP)

But, when I put the flash drive into my home computer (where it used to work a few months ago), absolutely nothing happens. The U3 Launchpad does not come on, and when I look in Windows Explorer, the flash drive is not listed among the drives that the computer can see and navigate to.

I have TRIED the flash drive in every available USB port on my computer (some running USB 2.0, some 1.0) - no difference. The light on the flash drive is on (it's getting "power", so it is actually connected), but to the computer, it's as it it's not connected. No error message, no nothing...

Any advice?

Do other USB Drives work?

Have you tried manually INSTALLING the drivers for this Flash Drive?I format U3 off of my flash drives as soon as i get them home.....it doesn't work on all machine configurations. QUOTE from: patio on July 08, 2008, 05:56:42 PM

Solve : Do I have a power fan connector?

Answer»

I BOUGHT a new ASUS motherboard.  I have three fan connection PLUG in's.  The CPU
is ok and the CHASSIS fan one is ok, but what about the POWER fan connector.  All
it does I BELIEVE  is measure the speed of the Power Supply Fan.

I have a device I found is my miscellanous collection that on one end is a 3 prong
plug in with a black and red wire going to it, with one not connected.  The black
and red wire go back to a 4 prong power connector .  The red goes to a yellow wire(I
believe is 12V) and the black to black(I believe is ground).  Is this the correct
connector to use just to measure fan speed or is it even necessary?

What ASUS MBoard ? ?
They make quite a few DIFFERENT ones...

Solve : Will CPU/GPU damage cause a slow processing??

Answer»

Hi there

Just 2 quick questions that don't really need alot of specs,

If a Intel P4 Celeron cpu was to overheat, but not completely be fried, could it become slower than ususal?

Also if a GPU was overclocked too high, too frequently, could it also RUN just fine (eg no artifacts, errors) but just run at a slower speed than normal?

Only asking because I think this s my problem

KurtisComputers do slow down when they get hotter and the processor will wear itself out if you overclock it.

That help at all?Yes but more specifically, can it still run fine and at the same rated speed (in this case 2500MHz) but actually only perform at half that?I wouldn't think it would work like that, no, unless the component was actually DAMAGED.Digital electroncis generally either work or don't work. A microprocessor is not a mechanical system with lots of little wheels and levers that can "wear out". A damaged cpu will be DEAD.

If a cpu slows down because of heat it is because thermal throttling is taking place. If it stays slower than it should be, that strongly suggests that something is wrong with the COOLING. It is very difficult to fry a modern cpu.

A utility like CPU-Z will TELL you what speed your processor runs at.

Thanks that helps quite alot

Does the same happen with a GPU? Specifically a Radeon 9700 Pro?Radeons are known for throttling issues.
make sure to apply and maintain  your cpu cooling system such as the thermal grease below  the heatsink, remember to apply it once in a few month if you are using an overclock, just like mine.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_grease

Adding extra FANS would be nice..

Solve : Help – SFF Shuttle SN95G will not boot (IDE drives not detected)?

Answer»

I built my first PC (Shuttle SN95G SFF) 4+ years ago and it has worked almost perfectly ever since (Win2k SP4).

Last night I turned it on an it went through the boot screen and I noticed no IDE hard drives were detected. My LCD monitor stayed blank and the OS didn’t boot. I opened it up checked the connections, changed the GPU, went into BIOS and tried to manually select HD and it wasn’t listed. After spending 2+ hours trying to fix it I am not able to  load the OS.

I’m afraid my hard drive (250gb Seagate) has failed. The strange thing is that there were no warning signs I’ve read about before. Only about 25gb are free on the HD and most of my data is not backed up. I defragged it for the first time in 6 months 3 days ago, but it did start many times since then. I can’t fathom losing my 300+ pictures of my 3 month old DAUGHTER and it’s also my wife’s work machine so I need to fix it ASAP.

What do you THINK the HD has failed or is the problem caused by something else? How can I fix it? If the HD is dead how do I recover the data from it? Thanks in advance.
To find out if the drive has failed DLoad and run the Seatools diagnostics on it. Use the file to create a bootable CD and boot to it for this step.

The next thing you may try is removing the drive and HOOKING it up as a slave drive on a working machine...the drive jumper settings will be on top of the Seagate drive. MAKE sure it is set to slave. NOTE: You may also have to check the drive in the working machine to set it to master/w slave present....Western Digital's are common for this.

Once done boot the machine and give it plenty of time to start everything before doing anything...OPEN Windows Explorer and see if the drive shows up...if so you can now copy/burn whatever data you need...

Finally at this time you should start considering a regular backup strategy as all drives fail sooner or later.
I use and recommend Acronis True Image...but there are others.

Solve : I need help with a Modem?

Answer»

I have a new problem. The COMPUTER I built for my wife is having problems with the Modem. It will dial up to the provider *censored* it will not CONNECT to a site. Nothing shows up in Device Manager as being wrong. I went to help and support and ran network diagnostics. It told me that the network adapters failed. Isn't that part of the motherboard? I guess I have to send the motherboard back to Intel? The modem is fine. I went and picked up a new usb modem same problem. I took the new one back and picked up a modem card. Still the same problem. Yes I changed the DRIVERS each time I installed a new modem. Yes I dumped the old ONES. I don't know of any thing else to do. What would you do. The mother board is only eight weeks old. Thank you for your time. I replaced the motherboard and every thing is fine now. Thanks for POSTING back
