Solve : Need help with HP C6280 All In One?

Answer»

I have a new printer, HP C6280, and my operating system is Vista Ultimate.
My problem is that EVERYTHING I print comes out in very small font. It is readable, but not a comfortable read. The printer has printed this way SINCE installation. Is there any way to enlarge the font? I have tried the obvious by going into the printer OPTIONS, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.go to printer properties--> select A4 sheet.I went into printer properties and don't see anything that says A4 sheet. Can you be a bit more SPECIFIC? THANKS alot

Solve : CD drive help needed. newbie dumb question warning.?

Answer»

Hi. I dont know much about these things, so here it GOES, and THANKYOU in advance for helping.
I have a Dell D610, and a Dell 620. The I have to turnn the D620 back into WORK(it's basically brand new), but they are donating a bunch of laptops to a school.
My question is, the 610 I'm keeping has a working but used for a year or so TS-L162c Cd-Rom drive. The 620 I have to surrender has a HL-DT-ST GCC4244 CDRW/DVD I noticed I could switch one w/ the other, but should I? Is the other one really any better? Will I have to switch any drivers or anything? Thankyou GAIN for any help in this matter.Sounds like a moral dilemna...i'd ask the IT people if they mind and if not swap in the newer model.
It shouldn't need drivers if it's running anything later than WinME...Thanks for the reply. I'll switch the unit then. They are fine w/ doing that, I just wondered if one was better than the other. Incidently the reason they are dumping the 620's is they have surpluses of 610 batteries, and none for the 620, so they figured it would be cheaper to keep the 610's out there.Quote from: timmyn on OCTOBER 28, 2008, 04:52:19 PM

Solve : Disappearing DVD Drive?

Answer»

Here's my problem in a nutshell. One minute my DVD drive is up and working, the next it doesn't exist. One day I turn on my laptop and the drive is up, showing in My Computer and Devices. The next day I turn it on, I can't find it listed anywhere. When I put in a CD or DVD, ti MAKE sounds as though it's open to open the disc but then just goes quiet. HELP!!! I guess there is no help for this problem Try one of these:
1. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
or...
2. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on downloaded file, and allow registry merge.
or...
3. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see TWO items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstal. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.I completed the steps. On the website there was no download with the name you stated, but there was a Downloaded Guide Help. I completed the steps and then my laptop froze on the last screen that stated to restart the computer. I had to cut the POWER to my laptop, in ORDER to get it started again. And when it restarted my DVD was still not there.Quote

Solve : Usb Over current detected??

Answer»

Hope someone can help me out here because I am tearing my hair out over this problem I am having. The problem began when I tried to upgrade my graphics card from a Geforce 8800gt to the ati 4870. I booted up my computer after installing this ati card and during the post was greeted by the following message. “Usb over current detected please remove over current usb device”. It then went on to say the computer would shutdown in 15 seconds – which it did.

The following is a list of things I have done to try to fix this problem - but with no success.
1)Geforce card back in computer.
2)Removed all usb devices.
3)Bench tested my motherboard out of the case, with only the graphics card and ram installed, I disconnected hard drives/DVD drives... etc

Mainboard: Asus Crosshair
Psu: Coolermaster 650 watt
I would try this system with a new power supply. Sometimes overload detections are created by the lack of ample power to keep everything alive. Your power supply MAY be weak causing this. The USB overload is a GENERAL message since generally a USB overload would cause by the bus power being weighed down by devices.I will try to get hold of a power supply like you have suggested, but I'm not ENTIRELY convinced that it is the psu. I have used a psu tester and all the readings come back ok. I also disconnected the hard drives and DVD drives so I feel this would have given it any power it needed. Do you think it could well be a fault on the mainboard? Can a mainboard develop this fault?Hate to have to bump my post, but does anyone know if this could be a motherboard fault?i had this problem for a while
do you have any front (or top) USB ports?I have front usb and disconnected them from the mainboard- I still get the same problem when they are disconnected. The back ones are onboard. well then my help wont be needed
that was my problem, that they were plugged into the mtherboard in the wrong configuration
good luck anywayThanks for trying, I am STARTING to believe its a motherboard fault, but I'm hoping someone here may be able to confirm this. Here's a good thread to read to determine whether or not it may be the motherboard: http://www.computing.net/answers/hardware/usb-device-over-current-detected/50493.htmlThanks for the link, I am almost sure its my mainboard now. I have sent this board back since it is still under warranty, I will let you know the outcome. Thanks!!You're welcome...

Let us know how the replacement goes...Turned out to be the motherboard, but what you suggested could also result in this error, so it's best to try your fix FIRST. Thanks for the help guys.

Solve : Recover Harddrive?

Answer»

Hey My laptop recently died on me the Graphics Card inside it has broken and it has to be sent for repair so that is some good news for me today however the repair guy says that all the data will have to be erased from the computer but i ain't being ripped off to PAY a fortune to recover my hard drive when i could do it myself so this is my question?

How could i recover am laptop hard drive with a broken graphics card? I know some programs can let you see what files you want but the Grpahics Card has broken so that idea is out the window, I was wondering if i could just PLUG my portable USB hard drive in to the computer via USB and it would just start grabbing the data off the computer?

Or would i have to go around this a different way optionally i would like it if i could just plug the portable HDD in the computer and then it will copy all the files without any hassle?

Thanks for your time!WAIT STOP!!!

If the Graphics Card is broken, ASK him 'why the heck would you need to erase the computer's hard drive??'I would get it out of that guy's hands as QUICK as possible...

You need one of these:

This will allow you to hook up the laptop HDD to any desktop machine as a slave drive and retrieve your data...

Solve : Printer won't work after installing new security on computer?

Answer»

I recently updated my computer security by installing the newer version of the SYSTEM I already had. I went from Mcafee Internet Security Suite 2007 to Mcafee Internet Security Suite 2009. Everything is great with my computer but it seems that ever since I installed the update my printer won't print any more. When I hit print I get an hourglass SYMBOL that doesn't ever change. I have checked the printer while it is unattached to the computer and the nozzle print comes out perfectly. Does anyone have any ideas for me? I need my printer to work soon. Thanks for any help you can send my way.can you try self test your printer?Yes, I TESTED it after disconnecting from my computer and I got a perfect nozzle check.have you tried reinstalling the printer SOFTWARE?well I solved the problem! I got in contact with Mcafee and told them I thought the new program might be the problem. I worked online with a tech through LIVE chat and he walked me through some different steps and voila the computer recognizes my printer again. Thanks for trying to help.

Solve : 600w PSU to low for this build??

Answer»

I have a 600w psu with one 6pin cable and no 6+2 or 8 pin cords. I did buy a 6 to dual 6+2 pin outputs converter to appease my video card.

The problem is I have 4 sata HDD's and a dvd burner already that I plan to ADD to this, and it shows the gtx280 min psu as 550w. Do you think that I will be forced to buy a new PSU? What if I just added 2 of my HDD's?

My build is listed below not including my HDD's or dvd drive I plan to add.

Solve : Hard disc won't stop working like mad??

Answer»

My hard DISK keeps working like mad non stop. Even if I am doing nothing it is whirrling round like a maniac.
Why won't it take a rest now and then.

It lives in a MSI Notebook using Windows XP home.

It has been doing this for months - pretty slowed down too.
I have tried defragging, deleting lots of programs and nothing has helped.

ChrisSomething - some process - must be hogging CPU time and calling on HDD non stop. Gotta be.

I know OTHERS suggest better but - checkout Taskmanager and see if you can see any process that is sucking this up. Either alt+ctrl+del or start -> Run ->taskmgr.exe See how ''busy'' CPU appears to be.

Then maybe study what is showing in start -> run -> msconfig

Wonder if you have some malignant infection perhaps too.

Check out a bit deeper and LET us know what you find. How much free space do you have ?
What programs are running in the background ?
When is the last time you ran chkdsk ?Never stops. Is it always connected to a network? Try to get it off the NET and wait a bit. Maybe somebody on the net is using your PC . But it that does not help, and it f it keeps on, you may have a failing hard drive. The drive is try to FIX itself. Quote from: Sitka on October 30, 2008, 07:14:14 PM

Don't do that anymore...you risk DAMAGING expensive components.oh ok... so do i really need more power and how much will it cost do you think? iam kinda on budget on what i can getwhat about http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130380 could i use this?that 115v 220v power switch has nothing to do with power consumption- it simply allows the computer to be used in Europe where the AC is 220 volts.

As Patio SAID- probably not a good idea to mess with it. Although admittedly, it's BETTER to have it set to 220 and recieve 115 then to have it set to 115 and receive 220... Those poor European computer newbies...

Solve : is my Radeon 4850 underpowered??

Answer»

Hello,

I recently bought myself an ATI Radeon 4850 powercolor graphics card. I have had a few issues with the card not recognising my Samsung SyncMaster MONITOR - even though the system recognises it and all the correct drivers are installed.

The graphics card will initially recognise the monitor but if I run a game (such as Brothers in Arms Hells Highway which is quite demanding) the graphics card will throw up an error message and says that I have a 'default VGA Monitor' and reset my resolution to a much lower setting. It basically seems to lose track of my monitor and the game will ULTIMATELY crash.

I have a Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4ghz processor and 2gb DDR2 Ram. I have a 450w power supply - don't think it is a particularly GREAT model.

Does this seem like a power supply issue to any of you guys? The 4850 is not overheating, running temperatures are pretty good so I don't think that is the cause.

I am thinking of getting a better more POWERFUL PSU as I think the 4850 is perhaps not able to gain enough power from my system. But this is just a guess as to the cause of my problem - can anyone perhaps confirm/disprove my suspicions?

Really appreciate any help you can provide.your graphics driver is crashing. the default Video driver, which windows uses in this case, doesn't support DDC (data Display channel) and recognizes all monitors as Default VGA.

Try updating the driver- or reinstalling to an older version, such as that included on the CD included with the card. Thanks for the help, but....there doesn't seem to be much difference between using the latest driver and the driver supplied with the card. The same thing is HAPPENING, one minute it recognises my SyncMaster and the next it has reverted to 'default VGA Monitor'. But, it will then revert back to SyncMaster .

Because it recognised it one minute, then lost it, then recognised it again - that's what made me think perhaps it was a power issue. Admittedly I'm not particularly technical so don't really know what I'm talking about.

Well, it is a lot easier to pop the card that take out the PSU. Even a wimpy video card should not behave that way. Even tho the card is not overheating, it is overheated. I men that it has a defect that is heat driven. I am an old hardware tech and a few times have I found a PSU that was underpowered. And when that happened other things would happen. It has got to be the video card or just maybe the cable that goes to the monitor, but you must have already tried that.

Solve : Does External USB SONY DVD writer act as boot device?

Answer»

I have a External USB SONY DVD writer DRU 820A.
I am running windows xp professional SP2 as OS , and no CD-ROM[FAILED to operate], so far i am using this USB sony DVD writer for all purposes.
Now i had some virus problem in my OS, so i have to BACKUP into DVDs, then i have decided to format the C drive to freshly install my OS again
Does my USB sony dvd writer DRU 820A act as boot device like CD-ROM to install my OS, because i had no other option how to install my OS again.
I had intel D865GBF motherboard, 512 RAM,

Please tell me whether this external USB Sony DVD writer act as boot device to install OS, if it is how to set it as boot device. You will have to go into the BIOS and MAKE sure the DVD Drive is set first on the Boot Menu. And you will need to check your motherboard manual to see if it supports booting to a USB device...some do not depending on the age of the board.

New internal BURNERS are pretty cheap these days...you may have to splurge.yeah, i can see my external DVD drive connected through USB in BIOS setup ,
so i can install OS CD.
thanking you for ur replies, just i had some precaution before i do it myself whether this will work or not, if something happens wrong in OS,
that's why i am asking like you experts about this.

Thank u once again and also in futureJust because the BIOS recognises the external does not mean you can boot to it...consult your MBoard manual.

Solve : Monitor problems....part deux?

Answer»

A few months ago, I started a thread called "Is my MONITOR dying?" As it turns out, it was. I started saving money to buy a LCD monitor, as I'm tired of lugging around those CRT monsters. However, I have BECOME aware of something I didn't think of at the time. A scan of my computer SHOWS that the video ADAPTER I have, an S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR, is not VGA compatible! I need advise on what to do next. Is it simply a case of installing another compatible adapter and plug in a new LCD monitor or is it more involved? Would I need to be concerned about other things? Any opinions on which adapter? Be advised, I am not into gaming, if that matters.

Solve : can't load drivers for existing or new hardware, not sure when problem started?

Answer»

yes, it did not help.Did the devices LISTED re-appear in Device Manager ? ?
You didn't give many details...The optical drive is listed in the device manager and has a yellow exclamation point beside it. When the computer started up it detected the optical drive and TRIED to find drivers for it but it was unable to find any. When I checked the device manager it said that the optical drive was missing its device drivers. I tried the optical drive and it did work even with the yellow mark beside it. After I clicked Finalize on the "Found new Hardware" window a balloon popped up and said that the hardware might not work. Joystick still does not work. All of the devices that I deleted did reappear after rebooting. The only option i can think of from here would be to try and install the Saitek on another machine to rule it out as the culprit...it could have a bad USB cord or it may have just gone whacky.
There have been a few Posts recently on Saitek issues...although i've always liked them they can be quirky.

At least this WAY we'll know if the stick works properly or not...In an EARLIER post I commented that I had plugged the Saitek into my other computer and XP had it up and working in about 15 seconds, with no extra drivers.
I must not be getting my problem across very well. It is not just the Saitek, it's anything with drivers. My Sidewinder joystick, LZ cellphone, when the Fios guy tried to plug in his memory stick, etc., etc.. The only things that work that use drivers are the things that were already installed before something? went wrong. And of course the new hard drive and both optical drives which, as you pointed out, don't need drivers, they work. But every time I reboot the computer, a bunch of "Found new Hardware" windows pop up and try to find drivers for: the new hard drive, the two optical drives, and seven other devices. But the drivers are never found and the next window pops up and says the hardware could not be installed because the software could not be found.
I guess I'm going to have to give in and just start over with a CLEAN installation of the OS.
Thanks for trying to help.

Solve : keyboard preventing standby?

Answer»

I'm RUNNING XP home on a Dell inspiron 8200 laptop. Because it is so slow, and because I need to access my computer multiple times per day, standby seems like a good idea. Any time I close the laptop, or if i leave the computer for an hour, it tries to go into standby, but then I get an error that says the PS/2 keyboard is preventing standby. I have looked into the issue a little bit, and read that it is not ACTUALLY the keyboard, but another program (adobe reader was listed as a potential cause) was preventing standby. I believe just about all of my PROGRAMS are up to date, but I'm not sure which one is causing the problem, if that is the case at all. Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on STARTUP tab.
Click Disable all

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

If it goes to standby OK, start adding startups, and services, until you find the culprit.

Solve : Hard Drive Problems??

Answer»

Hello, I've just set up a RAID1 configuration using two 750GB Samsung F1 HDD's. Also on the scene is a third 750GB HDD which is currently redundant but will be used to create a backup of the other drives. On top of that I have a third HDD installed (1TB) for backing up everything.

Just to clarify: ALL OF THESE DRIVES ARE NEW

The problem is that I have started to notice my PC freezing up, whilst the hard drives start to seek. This can be whilst playing music, browsing the net, scanning for MALWARE and so on. I accept that it may be because of a combination of all of the above at the same time, but the freeze time is around 4 seconds (surely this shouldn't be happening). When the drives start to spin they also make a noise, which is kind of clicky (as far as I have noticed they only make the clicky noise once).

What does everyone think? What operating system are you using?

In Vista, sometimes my open programs lag while the necessary files are retrieved from an asleep disk.

The clicking noise is unsettling.Hello, I am using Windows Vista Home Premium edition (32bit).Quote from: www.mydigitallife.info

HDD drive in Vista system will be TURNED off (it’s actually not hibernation as there is no memory state, instead, the whole hard disk is shutdown and cut off from power) in order to conserve and save power or ELECTRICITY. The downsize and disadvantage of this power saving feature is that when users want to access and read a idle turned off hard disk drive, the access is not immediate as the drive needs to recover from sleep mode. Usually, users will hear a loud noise generated from sudden start moving of hard disk’s mechanical part, while access to hard disk starts only after a few seconds.
Here is a link to the article
Ah! I NEVER thought of adjusting the power saving settings.

I have made adjustments and let you know the outcome.

Thank you!Brilliant, I haven't had any problems since.

Thank you so much!

Solve : case lights come on, no booting or error beeps though.?

Answer»

Hey,

The problem:
After upgrading my case on my pc. I pressed the power button and the lights come on in the case and the fans start but nothing else happens. No system error beeps. I have a Remote Admin server side application that runs on boot and I cannot connect to that and I do not hear any windows startup sounds after a short time either.

Things I have checked:
- Power cables to HDDs, motherboard.
- Power button cable
- connection cables for HDD
- Graphics card inserted correctly

The monitors work as I am using them to type this on my spare computer. I cannot quickly test the GPU because the secondary pc does not have the right expansion slots (quite old)

System Info:

Optical drive: DVD etc (not connected)
Monitors: ASUS VW22u[secondary], ASUS MW22u[primary]
Liquid Cooling, Thermaltake Bigwater

Operating System:
Installed on 250Gb HDD
Windows Vista Ultimate x64*

Thank you for any help

*editedA guy might want to double-check the pin connections for the wires from the front of the case. Power, Reset, etc.

I TRIED the Asus web site. Quote

CPU: Q6600 Quad Core 2.4Ghz
First, I had to look up that this is an Intel chip. Why not tell us in your specifications? Not everyone knows every Intel vs. AMD chip by sight. I chose the Vista 64 bit option.

This brings me to a set of manuals from which you can choose to download HERE.I am certain that the case buttons work correctly. The power button makes the lights come on and kills them after it has been held down for 3 seconds or so and the reset button kills the lights when held in and turns them BACK on when released. (ie. they work as expected)

Added os bit NUMBER and chip brand too...

Will update if i find anything useful in the manuals

*UPDATE: nothing useful in manuals or english.

Solve : Problems with Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 1.5 TB hard disk?

Answer»

Hello,

My system before operations:
Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 with award BIOS
4 x Samsung T166 500GB hard disk
Windows XP SP 2

I added Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 to the system. BIOS recognized Seagate as a 1500 GB hard drive (if i remember correctly). I Initialized the hard disk in disk management, made one 500 GB partition and other one from the rest of the disk. I moved files from one of the Samsung drive (about 500 GB) to the Seagate’s larger partition. It took a few hours. Seagate’s temperature remained lower than the temperature of the Samsung drives (about 42 C). Everything seemed to work WITHOUT problems.

Then I removed one of the Samsung drives. I had to disconnect them one by one, because I couldn’t know which one was the empty one. After I pinpointed the empty one, I removed it. After that BIOS auto detect says that Seagate is a 500 GB hard disk. Windows sees it as a 500 GB hard disk too, but it doesn’t detect any PARTITIONS in it.

How can I get my system to recognize Seagate disk properly?Right clik the drive in Disk Management and select Properties...
Report back with the details. or a screenshot.Sorry to hijack this thread, but I'm also having the same problem with the Seagate 7200.11 so maybe we can pool resources:

http://www.computing.net/answers/hardware/15tb-ext-drive-nuked/53465.html

OP: Did you also do a quickformat on the drive?

Bios reports 500GB only both from JBMicron RAID controller and main SATA. Does it the same in both Gigabyte P35-DS3L and Asus P5B. Here's a screenshot:

I should also note that the machine where this happened had one 500GB mirror, one 750GB stripe, and a single drive (5 drives in all). I broke the stripe and added the 1.5 TB when this happened.

OP: Did you also do a quickformat on the drive?

Yes I did.csown,

Even though you say you have the same problem I would suggest that you start your own thread on this. Since I doubt your comp specs EXACTLY match that of the OP and I doubt that both of you have done the exact same things to your comps you might actual have different things causing each of your problems.Problem is resolved. Tmalin: I hope this helps you resolve your problem too.

I contacted Seagate today through the live web support interface. It was surprisingly efficient and helpful. The support engineer told me that I needed to try resetting the max size in the firmware using SeaTools for DOS (http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/).

It looks like there's a parameter for max size in the drive firmware, and somehow that got set to 500GB, possibly some interaction effect with the GigaByte BIOS. One of the advanced options in SeaTools DOS lets you set drive capacity arbitrarily or to max available. It's not available in SeaTools for Windows. If this procedure fails, then the drive would have to be sent back to Seagate.

After resetting the max size, I used Acronis to restore the partition and my data is back.
Seagate has shipped a ton of these drives pre-set to these values...
And he was correct; the Windows SeaTools will not re-set the drive.
Good Info.

BTW Welcome Aboard ! !That solved my problems too. Now BIOS recognizes the drive correctly. The partitions and my data was intact.

Thanks for the help and information!

I wonder how many TIMES I have to do that again. I have two more hard drives to remove and an other 1.5 TB Seagate drive to add to the system. Might as well do it before the fact and save the grief...

Solve : Ohms Law help?

Answer»

I just thought I would put this out there if anyone can help.

If I have a LED and it takes 2. Voltes at 30 mA
And I am going to use a 9. Volt Battery then for me to finout the Resistaance I will need is.

E DIVIDED by I = R

E = Voltage 9. Volt Battery
I = Current 30 mA Load that is my LED
Am I right???Yes, but remember that E is expressed in Volts, I is expressed in Amps and Resistance is expressed in Ohms.

So the equation for calculating the resistor value from the figures you supplied is:

9 / .03 with the result as 300 Ohms.

This site might assist with understanding the calculations.

OK I think I should tell you what I will be doing.

I have a LED and it take 2 Volts at 40 mA and I will be useing a 9 Volt Battery.

All it will be is a Light when I turn it on and that is it.

Now befor I go on when they SAY the LED needs 40 mA and 2 Volts are they giving me the MAX that the LED can take in Current??Quote from: nymph4 on October 27, 2008, 06:35:35 PM

Now befor I go on when they say the LED needs 40 mA and 2 Volts are they giving me the MAX that the LED can take in Current??

more or less. i believe its the max current that the LED can safely take before its life span begins to reduce due to the over-current.

just FYI, the brightness of the LED and the resistance of the resistor are indirectly proportional. if you want the LED to be dimmer, raise the resistance of the resistor, and visa versa. The choice of volts and current can be based often on an LED's power rating.

If for example it was a 100mW device then using W = E*I = E^2/R = I^2*R you can actually set up the conditions to suit the supply voltage itself.

Go to this site where there is a handy Jscript calculator.

If then we knew the device was 100mW power rating (just for example) we'd get - 9V supply at 100mW would require a 810 ohm resistor to yield the 100mW. Current would be around 11mA. 820 ohm is the nearest value on the E12 series.

You quote 40mA at 2 volts ....... which equates to 80mW

Solve : webcam makes pc reboot and manycam displays black screen??

Answer»

I recently formatted and installed Windows XP PRO SP2 Corporate stripped to the bones edition. All my drivers seem to install fine, and work fine but when it comes to my webcam whenever I attempt to run the webcam to take a photo or send webcam over windows live MESSENGER it appears for a few seconds then an error comes up. I cannot read the error message long enough to understand what it says due to a blue screen of death occuring shortly afterwards, but I can manage to make out it is saying something like "cannot execute v0220.dll" and a few other dll files.

Also, I have manycam software (not related to webcam). You can use it to display your webcam or your desktop through msn messenger (you can also switch between the 2 without having to turn webcam convo off). When I use it to display desktop all it displays is a blank screen, when I try to use it with my webcam it gets the error and then the blue screen of death again.

I cannot get my head around what is WRONG, maybe there is a certain service disabled which webcams require perhaps?

I don't know, but all I do know is before I formatted both my webcam and manycam worked fine. If it is down to this stripped to the bones edition, I do not wish to get a full clean copy of windows xp (because it installs a load of crap on your pc including the alexis spyware which ships with legit windows xp copys!) so I would RATHER FIX this problem on this copy of windows, if there is a missing service that is required then I will find a way to install the service from a legit windows xp disc or even from another website.

Can someone please help me out with this please, my email is [email removed to prevent SPAM] I have windows live messenger if you would rather help me out on there than on this forum, but please if someone knows what the problem is, or even has the slightest idea, help me out.

thank you in advanceQuote from: aaronp2k on October 25, 2008, 10:49:23 PM

What does this mean?

And I agree with Mroilfield. "What the heck is Alexis Spyware?"Alexis is not spyware as such, but many people do disable or remove it due to privacy concerns.
I smell an illegal copy of Windows - if you have a corporate edition it's legally for corporate use, and you wouldn't be stripping it down.
Besides, if you're customizing Windows with a tool such as Nlite, you should know what you're doing, those tools are for experienced users only as removing things you have no clue about will cause problems like this one.
If, as I suspect, this is some random torrent you've downloaded, then whoever started the torrent is a fool for doing so and you're a bigger one for downloading it.

Please, do let us know what the situation is Get legit.

Solve : Do I have to uninstall my graphics card driver for this??

Answer»

Hi
I currently have the geforce 8800gt, but tomorrow I will be getting the geforce 260gtx. Now this is where I believe my problems might start again. I say "again" because last week I purchased the ati 4870 and had one *censored* of a nightmare installing it. Please, let me explain what I did before these problems began. I uninstalled my nvidia DRIVER in control panel, shutdown my computer, installed the ati 4870, booted back up, only to be greeted with the message "Usb over current detected the computer will shutdown in 15 seconds". Now to cut along story short, it turned out, that by doing this simple procedure it ruined my mainboard.

Now what I need to know, can I install this new geforce 260 without first uninstalling the 8800gt drivers first? I say this because that's where I FEEL the problems I had last time began. You see I uninstalled the nvidia driver, but as soon as it asked me to reboot with the geforce 8800gt STILL in, all I got was a blank screen.

Solve : EDIT: "Upgrading" my Laptop to a Desktop.?

Answer»

It really depends because people's definitions of "good" are all different.
Look at my computer, in my profile. Cost me about £800, not including the mouse and mousepad, brand new in April 2008. That's a nice powerful computer which will run everything out there.
If you don't need a monitor, £500 should do you, add about £100 for a decent monitor and £60 for Windows if necessary. But, these things are flexible, it's usually possible to squeeze a few £s here and there to rbing the costs down.Could I use my current laptop as the monitor?

It's probably obvious to you.. but seeing as it has a screen I was wandering if it was possible, would be nice to knock of £300.

Also, I would be prepared to spend £800 (it would take a while to save up) and your PC specs look awesome, I think I might be nicking your PC off you

EDIT:

Also, I was just deleting things from Add/Remove Programs and it looks like I deleted the driver or thing that plays my sound, as no sound is playing and when I click on Volume Control it says there are no active mixer drivers.

Could you link me to one pl0x? You can't use the laptop as a monitor, no. Sorry.
£800 is a good amount to spend, you can get a great computer for that amount.
I'd be willing to sell mine on if you like I'm upgrading soon.

As for your driver question, what's the actual make/model of this laptop? It's a Compaq Presario C300.Not sure what OS you have but this should work: clicky.
Grab the audio drivers after selecting your OS.Thanks.

Another question:

How much would you think i'd get for this laptop if I sold it (and where could I sell it) as it could come in handy for SAVING up for a new desktop.

It's a 2 years old Compaq Presario C300 and has a weak right hinge and a jammed B button. It is running Windows XP Media CENTER SP2 it runs smoothly at most times and I guess I would WIPE it anyway if I were to sell it.

I will post pictures if you want. I'm just wondering for an estimate of how much it would buy for.Not sure how much you could get for it but not a lot.
You could try taking it to CEX if you have a store near you, or looking on Ebay for similar laptops to get an idea of what they're selling for.
I'd say £200 max. THOUGH for that, laptops depreciate very badly.Ya I got a CEX in my town.

I'll take it there if I decide to sell it, however a laptop could be handy for school and stuff.Just saying, CEX would be ABLE to give you a price for it so you'd have a ballpark figure of how much you could get for it. they don't usually give much though, so add some onto that and sell it elsewhere is my advice.
I was in the same situation as you, trying to sell my (older, but more powerful) laptop. I've decided that if I don't sell it to my friend who's considering it, I'm going to keep it because, much as I hate them, laptops are sometimes useful. If I do sell it, I'll save some of the money and buy a cheap laptop just so it's portable, something for about £100 maximum.Awesome, thanks.

Solve : How to back up all files to external HD with XP before internal HD swap??

Answer»

I am currently running a Western Digital 80 GB internal hard drive which is running absoluteley perfect, but I need more internal disk space so I am about to SWAP to a 250GB internal drive. What is the best way for me to send everything on this drive to my 320GB external USB HD, then send that information back to the new 250GB internal drive after the swap?
Thanks in advance.
Mike
My system is listed in my profile and signature. The easiest way is to use the software (FREE) from the new drive manuf. and "clone" the 80G to the 250.

Hook up the 250 as a slave drive.
Then boot to the CD that ships with the 250 and select Clone.
This will produce an exact COPY of your 80G onto the 260.
When it is done power down.
Then disconnect the 80 hook up the 250 jumpered as MASTER and boot up.
After running it for a few days and making sure everything is in working order you can then hook up the 80 as a slave drive, format it and use it for additional storage.

I highly recommend a drive imaging program for good solid backups...i use Acronis True Image but there are others as well...

EDIT: Just re-read your post and noticed you want your backup on the external...for this method you would need an image program as external's will not boot Windows OS's without a lot of finagling...this is by design.Quote from: patio on October 29, 2008, 07:14:19 AM

----------

Sorry patio, but I got impatient and swapped the HD's before you posted. I copy / pasted everything on my 80GB drive 'Program Files' to the external drive except the 'Windows' FILE.
Also, I wanted to install the 80GB drive in another computer (E-Machines 667ix) I have and am planning to network it with my current 'daily used unit' Dell which is the unit with the new drive. The 250GB drive is working fine so far but there were other changes I made out of the blue LOL. I installed Vista Home Premium OS on this computer and am still working on getting all the drivers, updated software ect. installed right now.
So far - so good, but I suspect I will have more questions before it's all said and done.
I will likely start a new thread with those questions for the porpose of future CHF users being able to find the correct INFO via 'search function'.
Actually I have a question about un-doing a disk partition I did months ago on the 250GB drive. I'll start a new thread for the reason previously mentioned.
Thank you very much for your help. You guy's are the best!!!

Solve : Printing through 2000 SVR Terminal Service ( RDP ) to XP Clients Default Printer?

Answer»

I have a Windows 2000 Server SP4 running Terminal Services ( RDP ), and would like to be able to print content in the Terminal Service session out to the default printer of the client workstation which is running Windows XP Pro SP2.

This Windows 2000 Server has port forwarding to it for port 3389 so the RDP ( Terminal Session ) is working great when starting the session to its IP.

The problem I have is ALTHOUGH I went into the advanced properties of the RDP client for Windows XP and have SHARE PRINTERS checked, upon starting the RDP session to the 2000 server, when you LOOK at the default printer, none are displayed so nothing can print.

Does anyone know of the trick to get the content to print from the server to the CLIENTS default printer?

These systems are on 2 isolated networks and a port forward is used to tunnel into the 2000 server, so the client cant be set up through share by name or through network neigborhood.

Thanks for your help in advance!

DaveLog into the workstation as the user.

Run regedit from the run utility.

Go to the following registry key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server\Default\AddIns\RDPDR

Create a DWORD Value Named FilterQueueType

Make the Hexadecimal value of the DWORD to FFFFFFFF

If the RDPDR key does not exist log into terminal server and then log out

Make sure to spell the DWORD Value exactly as above

Install the same printer driver on the workstation and the terminal server

Make sure to install the printer driver on the terminal on LPT1

I don't know why the computer automatically starts running as soon as it is plugged in either. Any Info would be greatly appreciated! I am using onboard. I assume that what you mean since I have no video card and just use the default connection on the mother board. before i had no power from motherboard, no fans....nothing. i put in new power supply and new motherboard. now everything powers up, just no display If the MBoard is not identical to the old one that HDD is not going to boot properly without doing a Repair Install...it's looking at the wrong drivers.Have you double checked the connections from the power switch to the motherboard?

Do you know if the onboard video was used in this motherboards last setup or a video card? If a video card had been used the BIOS may be set to send video through the card. If you refer to the motherboard manufacturer's documenation you can determine how to use a jumper on the motherboard to reset the BIOS to its default.

Are there any system beeps when the computer powers up?

What is the wattage of the power supply?

I went to the asus website and tried installing the drivers listed for my motherboard but it gives me an error saying that the product isn't found. I've tried the other ones on the site but none of them work. Also the LIGHT on the back of the computer where I plugged in the ethernet cable isn't even on. I've CHECKED all the CONNECTIONS to the router and I'm not sure if the motherboard is broken or something else.Did you use the MBOard DRIVER disc that shipped with it originally ? ?

Solve : components keep failing?

Answer»

Problem started with usb mouse not working, then keyboard stopped responding. Finally installed a new USB CARD and all was OK. Few days later I noticed the sound was not working. After CHECKING all connections I REBOOTED in hopes that would help.

At the point of rebooting, the monitor did not come up. I've checked all connections, tried a different monitor, nothing works. When I press the power button, it sounds like everything is going into the normal power up routine, but the monitor stays blank.

My choices.... Find the answer to this problem and get things up and running. Second choice ... assuming the disk is OK how to put it into another pc and boot from it. This disk is SATA, the other computer that I would put it in is the older style, ide CABLE, so I guess there is some type of cable that would bridge the difference.I would first try another monitor or try the current monitor on another computer. What OS ? ?
If it is newer than WinME it's probably not going to boot properly in another machine...
What do you want to accomplish here ? ?The monitor works on other computers, but other monitors will not work on this system. My goal in being able to use this hard drive is not to spend days/weeks trying to get PROGRAMS and data on another system.Well it sounds like you have had multiple hardware issues...but if you suspect the HDD is going South DLoad and run the FREE diagnostics from the drive maker's site...
Follow the instructions for creating a bootable floppy/CD and run the long test...

Solve : sound card stopped working??

Answer»

Hi, my SOUND card has been playing up for about a month now.
It just randomly STOPPED working and has not worked since.
I have tried everything i can, from rebooting my laptop to regular virus scans and SEARCHING for updated drivers for the card, however nothing has helped me to fix the problem.
The speakers play a START up sound when i TURN it on, however once i begin to log on to windows the sound just stops, and i cannot find anything to suggest a problem.

My laptop is as follows:

System -

ASUS
Model: V6J
Processor: Genuine Intel(R) CPU C2050 @ 1.60 GHz [2 CPUs]
Memory: 1024MB RAM
DirectX: Version 9.0c

Sound Card: SoundMAX HD Audio O
Device ID: HDAUDIO\FUNC_01VEN_11D4DEV_1986SUBSYS_1
Manufacturer ID: 65535
Product ID: 65535
Type: WDM
Default Device: Yes

Sound Card Drivers -

Name: ADIHdAud.sys
Version: 5.10.0001.4130 (English)
Date: 18/8/2005 03:26:14
WHQL Logo'd: Yes
Provider: AnalogDevices

Any help is appreciated,
thanks.Where is the above info from? Why is sound card drivers entry blank? Any errors in Device Manager? Did you try to reinstall sound drivers?make sure the "windows audio" is started via services.msc. I have had similiar problems when I first used XP and tried to "Streamline" my system, and I must have disabled it... troubleshot the situation for weeks only to discover I had simply disabled a required service.

If it refuses to start, however, then this is not the case.

Solve : Adding Duplicate drive to system and making it RAID?

Answer»

I have a custom built Intel RAID-enabled Mobo with Q6700 CPU, 4GB RAM and a WD 500GB HDD. I just purchased duplicate WD 500GB HDD and want to add it to my system and make it RAID 2. Question - Will I need to reformat first drive and start from scratch installing all programs and data so they will duplicate over to second drive or can I just COPY entire drive from 1 to 2 and start from there? I also have a 500GBG external drive that I have already copied entire drive to but did not "ghost" it - just copied from C: to external. My external drive is a FREE Agent Pro that is SATAII CAPABLE but can't find a SATA cable that will fit it - the SATA ones I have do not fit correctly. My system has an external SATA connector but I had to use the USB connector to make it work.

Solve : Turning on, getting nothing!!?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 4300S went to go turn it on TODAY and I got nothing on the screen and on the rear of the CPU there are 4 lights on ABCD. These lights are just above where the mouse and keyboard plug in. All four where lit.
When I started the computer there were two long beeps, two shorter beeps and then two long beeps again. When I opened the case up there is a yellow light lit on the motherboard and it is labeled as aux. power. Not far AWAY from that light is a small green diode type light that is ALSO lit. All of the fans are all working and the DVD drive opens and closes.
Just wondering if anyone might know what the problem is or what I might want to check next?
Are these models know for doing this or are they reliable? I bought it a year ago, USED, from a friend.
Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give me!! Try replacing ram and its possible it could be the cmos batteryQuote

All four where lit.

All four were lit? What color are they?

HERE is a page from the Dell website which shows the interpretations of the LED's.

Solve : attaching external music system to WindowsXP?

Answer»

I have purchased a new (old) music system consisting of amp, tape deck, CD player, and tuner. All work great together, but I can't tie the system into my SB Live! 1024 Sound card on Windows XP. I have attached my cable to the "Tape (Rec Out)" plug on the amp (as suggested by the "windowsmedia/knowledge center" web site), but all I get is a hum from by computer speakers. Maybe my sound card is bad. I have used it before with this method. Any suggestions? Thanks.Which port on the sound card are you using?I have four ports color coded yellow, blue, pink and green. The pink is for microphone and my speakers are in the green. I am using the blue and I don't have the faintest what the yellow is for. Maybe I should try it?Quote

my speakers are in the green

If you mean your PC speakers then that I am assuming is your line out - the source you'd want to USE for an external music system if you want to drive that with sound from puter. That would then feed line in on your external amp, and so you'd no longer use your current PC speakers.

if you want to run sound into your puter from all the external stuff then feed from a headphone source on extl amp to line in on puter - only take a low power signal.

I hate this color deal on puters now as I forget what is what and yellow - no sure at all. Main choices involve line in - line out - and mic of course. I am thinking your blue is a line in - you say you are using it but not what for.Yes, I assume that the blue is "line in" which is where I want to be and what I used in the past for an earlier music system. But this time it won't do the job and I can't figure why.verify the volume settings for Line In...Indeed yes - open volume control and check for both level and any mute setting on that channel.

I'll assume too the socket is for a 3.5mm STEREO jack - and so stereo jack needed to go in - which I am sure you have. Check the cable you want to use for integrity - both on the sound channels and ground - just a basic continuity check on all three conductors. Thanks to all of you for your good thoughts and advice!!! After verifying that my signal was good coming from the amp I looked more closely at my sound card and found that I have a bad socket on the card. By playing with the input jack I could make a good connection, but it won't hold. SOOO unless I can jury-rig the thing it looks like a new sound card for me. Oh well, anything I can do to help the economy. Thanks again.

Jaywalk9If you want any advice or recommendations for a new sound card, we'll be here Also - if you can wield a soldering iron safely (and self grounded pre any work) - chances are you could well replace the faulty socket. Also inspect the socket and make sure the spring-like effect - the thing that ungrounds the socket when jack inserted - is strong enough tension - sometimes those can be tweaked a bit.

Pity to have to replace card just for this.

Solve : DVD Burner no longer loading?

Answer»

I bought a DVD Burner a few months ago on Newegg. It came with no software or anything but some SHIPPING info and the burner. I plugged it into a tower slot, hooked in the power supply and Flat strap thing (lol) and started up my computer. I was able to burn 2 DVD's of a home video for my family but it hasn't worked since. I can throw a disc into it and the green light outside flashes for awhile, than nothing. BIOS shows nothing LOADING, there is no drive listed in My Computer and I don't know what to do!
I've tried to unplug both cords than put them back in and cleaned it a little, none seem to work.

Link to Newegg product: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106228RMA it to newegg for a new one...

(RMA= Return Merchandise Authorisation)
The info will be on their site.Well I just got it back from NewEgg today and plugged it into my computer. The same thing is still happening where it shows up on BIOS but it doesn't show up in My Computer or Device Manager.

What COULD the PROBLEM be and how can I fix it?

Thank you and sorry for digging up this topic but thought it might be easier.Thats a IDE, drive how is it connected? Is it ssaved or master ? check your jumper settingsTry using a different IDE cable (that "flat strap thing" you mentioned)Alright I can do that. I'll have to pick some up at Best Buy or something tonight.
Are they all the same?
Because right now this IDE Cable is connected to CD/DVD and DVD Burner. I also seem to have 2 separate cables that look exactly the same 1 attached to my hard drive-Mo Bo and the other attached to a none FUNCTIONING Floppy-Mo Bo.take the old one with you so you get the right oneIf there are 2 Optical drives setup on that one ribbon cable you need to check the jumpers on the back of the drives...

Master = end of IDE cable.
Slave = middle connector.

Solve : Rocketfish 3.5 Hard Drive USB Enclosure?

Answer» LOOKING to make a inexpensive hard drive backup from an existing working hard drive. Need an enclosure. This one on ebay looks like it will work. Says it will operate with Win Vista, which is what CAME on my new Dell laptop. So far I'm not overly excited with Vista but maybe it will grow on me. What do you think of this Rocketfish thingie? Is there something better? Is it obselete? Help.

BTW, someone told me yesterday that all Windows systems will go obselete in the near future. True??

Thanks. DixieflashYou didn't link the EBay page so can't tell if you are lookin' at PATA/Eide or SATA and what price is being asked/bid, new or used, from a reputable dealer or private.

What's the 'near future'? MS still supports W2k and will support XP until 2014, Vista till ? The quote below is extracted from this site...

Quote
Microsoft's support road map currently says that extended support for Windows XP ends in April 2014. You need to be on the latest service pack within one year of its release for continued support, which at this point means you must be running XP Service Pack 2.

So the EARLIEST date that XP SP2 support will end is 2014, but history has shown that Microsoft often gives customers a reprieve as these dates draw near. For example, support for Windows 98 was to be dropped in January 2004, but Microsoft extended it by two and a half years to July 2006.

XP's life would also be extended if Microsoft were to issue an XP service pack on or after 2013. Microsoft has a tentative date for XP Service Pack 3 in the first half of 2008. If SP3 is released anywhere near on SCHEDULE and turns out to be the last service pack for XP, it won't affect XP's 2014 end-of-support date.

Ask your 'someone' to quote the source of their info.

Good luckDusty, will USB 2 work with my new Dell laptop, win vista? Tnx. DFSorry, my crystal ball isn't cleared to make the runway in Dixieland so I can't have a look at your new Dell laptop to find out which model it is so that I can look up the specs somewhere. However, usb2 has been around for a while and even Dell wouldn't be still providing usb1 on new gear so I guess you're hot to trot on that one.Dusty, didn't mean to stress your crystal ball!
