You did not post the full Everest report as requested. How MANY physical hard drives are in there? Just one that you have partitioned into a primary and a logical? It SEEMS so. What file systems are shown in the Properties tabs for each drive?im sorry but i really dont know, im not very good when it comes to techy talk, one last question, how do i format it if i find it without loosing everything that was on there? If you format a drive you WILL lose all of the data on there. I am trying to see if the data can be salvaged before you take that step. That is why the information is required. I'm sure a good format will help the situation, but that is for later.

Go to My Computer and right click on each of the hard drives - C and Z. Choose Properties and then type in everything you see for each drive. File System is what we're looking for. Does it say RAW?

Solve : CDROM problems?

Answer»

Hi I just built a new machine and I have power to everything but the CDROM drive.( I went back to where I bought it from and swicthed for a new one)STILL nothing.I whiched the plugs around from the power supply to test. There is power coming from the PS even changed the ribbons and slot for the ribbon and still nothing. Can anybody help? Does the drawer open? Let's start there.

The chances of two drives being dead are remote. If there is power in the molex plug we will have to look elsewhere. Can you run the hard drive OK with the plug you are trying to use for the CDROM?There is no power at all, I can't open the cdrom.I even changed the OLD cdrom I have in my old computer which works and still nothing.
There is power to the plug. I changed it around with the fan and it has power. I even TESTED the plug witha 12v electric circuit tester and there is power to the plugs.I even changed the plug to the HD still nothing. Try a different power supply.

Solve : External Hard Drive won't even power on?

Answer»

I have had a failure...I should have known that one day my external hard drive (Western Digital) would die, all the signs were there. The lights on the front gave out quite a while ago, for the last month or so the connection with the computer would be fine but then it would say that the file could not be found. Then last night, I think it has officially given out while I was in the process of transfering stuff to my new hard drive. Is there anyway for me to retrieve the information, music, pics etc? Is it simply a MATTER of replacing some kind of internal power supply? Because the external works just fine. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Some people have had luck putting the affected drive in a plastic bag in the freezer for 30 minutes, then mounting and using quickly UPON removal. Get the data off quickly if it appears to be working!

There was a poster looking to store all of his valuable data on an external drive because he did not want to use DVD's as it took too long. Maybe this will help him to DECIDE smarter as well.

Solve : Toshiba Laptops + Overheating + Shutting Down?

Answer»

I need some thoughts...

I was having a problem with my TOSHIBA Satellite A75-S209 OVERHEATING and shutting down on me after only having it 6 MONTHS. I filed a complaint with the BBB and Toshiba requested that I send in my laptop so they could repair the infamous problem. After a month, and much hassle, I finally get back my computer from Toshiba supposedly repaired. Now, my computer is running much slower (ie programs take FOREVER to open!). I suspect Toshiba reconfigured the BIOS and CPU in order to stop my computer from overheating and shutting down. Now, my question is this. Is that FAIR? I bought a brand new computer with certain specifications and now it doesn't seem to run the same! I'd very much like to just get a refund from Toshiba (as I believe it to be THE worst company I've ever dealt with) and tell them that it is not an OKAY fix to slow down my processes! Triple Post

Please see response to the one in the OTHER topic. Too many identical posts just causes confusion.

Solve : PC Slow when gaming...?

Answer»

I recently posted about well basically rebuilding my computer with 3ghz pentium 4, a new asus P5ND2-SLI mobo and a ati radeon x1300 pci express graphics card... well when I play my games they're still running slow... I only have 256mb of memory and was wondering if I put in some more if that would help any..256 RAM is not enough for a satisfactory XP experience and ESPECIALLY if you plan to game. what would you suggest? like how much more should I buy? I play games like The Sims 2 LoL it RUNS real slow when I play thatI imagine it does and you're lucky it runs at all!

Here's EXACTLY what you NEED, but which to get depends on what chips are in there now and your budget. 512 is a minimum, and 1 gig seems to be popular with gamers. In your case I would say 2 X 512 makes sense.

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?Mfr%2BProductline=ASUS%2B+Motherboards&mfr=ASUS&tabid=AM&model=P5ND2-SLI&submit=Go

You may find RAM cheaper elsewhere and it MAY work, but crucial offers reasonable prices, fast shipping, a lifetime warranty and GUARANTEED compatibility. Some people save a few bucks and end up with a disaster as all RAM is not the same.
256 for todays games isnt good. But it depends on the games you play. If its games like First PERSON shooters like battlefield 2 the 1024 mb is the least you should have. If i was you and you like to game, then i would get 1024 MB2GIGS baby! Quote

2GIGS baby!

4GB of RAM is enough.

I personally prefer 6.Here we go again.Over 2 gigs is pointless. I went and bought a gig today and my comp already seems faster but havnt tested it on the games yet Thanks!oh man this thing runs so much better... thanks alot GUYSYOU're welcome and thanks for posting back with your joy.

Solve : Fellows Track Mouse issues?

Answer»

ok, so, i have this fellows track MOUSE i bought in 05, i had to use it because my mouse is acting up, so, when i plug it in, it installs the driver and everything, but just last night it started sticking when i TRY to move it to the left, or right. if i move it enough it will move jerkly to the left or right, but it is a PAIN to use. up and down work fine. i have tryed reasearching this mouse and gotten no where, i do not know the modle number, nor is it on the mouse. does anyone know what could be causing this? btw, it worked fine on my school lappy in 05, never had issues with it till now.

it looks like this one:

it is USB, and plug n playFouled contacts. If you can't clean them throw in trash pronto or leave on side of road. Quote

or leave on side of road.

you dont seem to understand what people throw away around here, there quite stupid, they throw away anything that they dont have a use for, computers, TV's, speakers, monitors, you name it. as for the mouse, it seems that the board is loose and the little wheel is not breaking the beam of the motion sensors, i will fix this some other time, i dug up the HP mouse i found with the HP XE783, it works, but there isnt any sort of scrollwheel, or middle button, which is quite annoying

i cant live without my third button and scroll wheel... HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO SWITCH WEAPONS IN FPS GAMES NOW!? [smiley=angry.gif] but then again the lancer Gmouse 2000 didnt have a wheel, but it did have a middle buton, which would double click icons, and it had a speed control switch on the side... also it was a USB ball mouse, plug in play... another weird thing, it operated alittle bit too warm for my likingDead_Reckon....... i just spent the only 10 bucks i had on a new PCI NIC for the server, but i did dig this crappy old wireless mouse out of my dads closet, works but... the drivers disk that enables the wheel is a floppy disk, and my floppy DIA, acted possesed, then quit working, aside from the random "cannot access drive A:" message, i guess i will borrow the floppy from the XE783 and install itOr give the floppy to a friend who has a floppy drive and have him e-mail you the contents of the floppy...

doesnt seem to be too hot but ill check that againOh, a self build. WELL we are stuck working our way though this then.

Does this happen during gaming or other strenuous activity only?

What make power supply?

Have you tested the RAM (www.memtest86.com). If you do this you may need to disconnect all of the drives, add on cards, etc. to keep it running.

Did you check Event Viewer error logs?MA friend sorry!!!
But wat i can advice u is to try and make sure that u hve no viruses on yo machine.Because these one can humper the booting of the machine. So u can try and install some heavy anti virus and scan yo PC.

Solve : Netgear WPN824 router and SBC SpeedStream 4100?

Answer»

A few months ago, a friend of mine bought a new Dell system and with it also purchased a Netgear WPN824 router. He purchased the router from Dell on the thought that if he needed support, he could get it through Dell.

He began having connection issues when using the router with his SBC DSL Speedstream 4100 MODEM. He would go what we call "link dead" where you cannot go anywhere on the net, either receiveing "Page not found" errors, or blank pages.
However, he COULD still chat via MSN Messenger, which we found odd. He would then reset everything and it would work again, for a while, then die again.
He tried contacting Dell for support, but they would not help, so he contacted SBC, as he thought the problem might be with his modem or DSL line. After trying several possible solutions with SBC, the problem persisted. He then battled with Dell to receive a replacement, and they reluctantly complied.

They sent him the exact same router, except the "v2" of the router. He also removed his modem from the equation, and used his old Speedstream 5100 modem rather than the 4100. So far he has had no problems.

I do not believe he ever tried the new router with the 4100 modem.

Well, he missed his deadline to return the "defective" modem, so he gave it to me to see if I could FIGURE out what was wrong with it, if anything. If i can get it to work, I can keep it. I also have the Speedstream 4100 modem, and I am also experiencing the same problems when I try to use the router - link dead, can't email, but can chat. However, I have noticed that when it goes "dead" it is only for a few minutes and will wake up on its own. When it goes dead, I go into the rotuer control page and try to run a test, and it always works fine.

I will admit, I do not know jack about routers. Where do I start? Is this thing defective? I'd really like to get this thing to work (and maybe learn something about routers as well).

PKLot's of READING here: http://www.broadbandreports.com/gs/speedstream+4100?cat=remarkAlso NetGear's site has tons of info and diagnostic troubleshooting steps...

Solve : Video card problems.....?

Answer» WELL i just a got a new video card today (geforce 6600 AGP 8x) and its works fine with games ETC...but when i try to play a video with DivX or Windows Media player my comp freezes and nothing happens....im "prety" sure i have the write drivers and codecs...i dunno what els to do??

(also when i first started my comp up after installing the vid card i got a message saying something like "cannot use card to full performance because you NEED two video cars" ??

thanks. It said that because you don't have SLi and that doesn't really matter, in some cases SLi is WORSE than normal.ok, so as far as drivers etc... you completely uninstalled any old drivers etc first right? once these drivers are gone, make sure your chipset drivers are up-to-date. now INSTALL your most up-to-date vid card drivers. yeah that thing about two vid cards is prolly SLI. SLI is where you computer uses 2 graphics cards as if they were one. it's good stuff as long as you have the power for it and your computer doesn't overheat and what not. anyways. if you can play games divx videos should be no problem. what kind of videos are you watching (video file type) and what codecs do you have?If that is an AGP card disregard anything about SLI.

All of the codecs you need are here. See if this helps.

http://www.theorica.net/codecs.htmumm i went to the link and there is about 18 download links...whick one do i get?The Codecs 3.0 - 9x/ME/2000/XP (English) 5.850 kbthanks, but still no luck...any other suggestions ?You know it wasn't codecs now.

Did you uninstall all of the old drivers before you mounted this new card? What did you use for new drivers?

oh nah i forgot to uninistall the old drivers...is it to late now? i used the cd that came with it to install the new drivers.Try it and see, if they are still listed. Otherwise you may be looking at a reinstall.nah i can see the drivers anywhere...can i manualy delete them or something.?If you don't see them in Add and Remove probably not. If it were me , I'd just reformat the thing and start over.yeah i re-installed it now everything works..thaks for your helpGald you are all fixed up and thanks for posting back.

Solve : power supply failure?

Answer»

Does anyone have any ideas for this problem? I have a k7 mother board ,athlon processor 256 mb ddr ram, 80 gig hard drive 450 watt power suppy and 5 fans. everything is new yet it keeps blowing power supply's five in fact. i put a new one in it runs for a week then blows the power supply.everyone keeps telling me im GETTING faulty power supplys but five later? The fans are clean , and work great , at a loss any ideas? lannj. have you checked to make sure it's not a voltage issue? You've tried five different power supplies, five of the same, or what?

Are you plugged into a surge protector? Any problems with other electrical devices in your residence? Any indication of power fluctuations?also, are your surge protectors daisy-chained (plugged into other surge protectors which are plugged into other surge protectors. . .etc. . .which are plugged into the wall outlet)?Sounds like something is grounded and blowing the power supplies.

Bench the MOTHERBOARD (take it out of the case) with only RAM, CPU & video.

Alan <><

Thank you for your replies , no it is not daisy chained and yes it is on a power surge protector. I will bench the motherboard and see if it is being grounded somewhere. As far as i know there are no power issues in my house, thanks again for the input will let you know what i find. leanne. p.s. yes i have tried different BRANDS of power supplys.I'm amazed that MBoard and CPU are still surviving all this...best BET- MBoard shorting on the case. Solve : SATA/ATA Compatability?

Answer»

Probably a simple question but can a SATA hard drive and an ATA drive function on the same system? If so, which one which one would be MASTER?Yes.

Whichever way you configure it, but probably the BEST idea is the biggest, fastest drive should be the primary drive. The best way i have SEEN them co-exist is to use the SATA as primary as GX1Man suggests ; get it SET up and RUNNING properly with the OS and all your programs and only then re-introduce the ATA into the system...

Solve : Benefits of an upgrade??

Answer»

Recently I decided I was going to upgrade my computer and I am deciding to get a new processor. Many PEOPLE have advised me that I should get a dual core processor, but IM happy wiht a single core processor. Does dual core actually double the speed the your computer processes? Because I read that a dual core processor is only beneficial to programmes that have been specialy written to use dual core technology, do this mean it wont improve the day to day windows applications or make my gaming smoother?

Also, my new motherboard can hold a maximum of 4gb. I considered maxing out my ram to 4gb to improve my overall performance. But I was told that it would decrease game performance and that modern games would not recognise 4gb ram but would only recognise a maximum of 2gb ram.

thanksi dual core cpu just splits the work load up among the two cores, u dont get two cpu's so if you have a 2.8 ghz dual core just just have 2.8ghz not a 4.16 ghz cpu. and for the too much ram, the only thing i can THINK of is theres no such thing as too much ram. just make sure your mobo can handle as much as you put in. so if it can only handle 3 gigs then dont put ANYMORE than 3 gigs in itStrictly speaking, this is correct:

Quote

a dual core processor is only beneficial to programmes that have been specialy written to use dual core technology
and this isn't:

Quote
i dual core cpu just splits the work load up among the two cores
Sorry, unlovedwarriror!

Two parallel processors (which is effectively what dual cores are) will never be twice as fast as a single processor. There are great difficulties deciding how work should be distributed, how and when to wait for one processor to finish a job, etc.

The Wikipedia has >much to say< on this topic.my bad i was going off of what i heard or understood from what i heard. The point at DUAL-CORES is that they are working in a SINGLE-CORE enviroment most of the time. But even if they werent, they wouldnt achieve more then 50% more performance (not 100%).

As in, in future games it will be possible to LET ONE core do the mathmatical calculations and everything else, and let the ANOTHER core do the Pyhsics, that way u dont need an extra GPU.

You have to have the Program SPECIALLY made for the Dual Core CPU, or it will just use one of them. And if two gigs RAM is not enough you have other problems. Four makes no sense in the real world. You can never have to much ram games are always getting better and will continue to require more.

If your looking for a duel core processor I suggest AMD.Quote
You can never have to much ram games are always getting better and will continue to require more.

If your looking for a duel core processor I suggest AMD.

Have a read here if you think 4 gigs of RAM is a smart move:

http://computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/154367.html

If you get a new processor you will have to get a new motherboard, possibly different RAM, a new graphics card to handle it all....

I don't know about games getting better. They certainly get more resource intensive. Better is a subjective term.

My advice is, go with the duel-core, you might as well. And get 2gb max.

Solve : Computer running, but no power to USB's or screen?

Answer»

I am really flabberghasted by what's happend to my computer, for he life of me I just can't figure out what is wrong.

When I turn it on, I can hear it RUNNING. But the monitor isn't getting any information. And the mouse's lights don't turn on. Also the computers green light around the button I push to start it isn't going on, wich seems wierd. Also strangely is the computer always has its little working light thing orange even when it is turned off. And also strangely the wireless interenet has a light that is on, so the that USB is getting some power somehow.

It's all so wierd I don't even know where to start roubleshooting. I have 1.5 gigs of RAM, 2.1ghz processor, a 6800 Geforce OC, and a Soundblaster X-Fi sound card. My monitor is something Emachines gave me. I'm worried that some part or something has failed, as Emachines doesn't have the greatest reputation.

If you guys need any more information, please ask away. I've tried googling and searching for answeres that might help with this.. but its a very hard problem to put into search TEARMS. So a FORUM was my best bet. Thanks for your time in advance and I look forward to your replies.

Well.. not MUCH really precendented this, except the day before it happen my computer was running so slow I couldn't open any programs and the mouse was MOVING all stuttery. I restored to an earlier time and it seemed to fix the problem. I scanned for viruses and didn't get any.

I use AVG free edition virus protection. I checked to see if anything was loose inside the case but nothing was.

I just moved my computer from one house to another, so I think that might have something to do with it.

It's windows XP. I can't tell you much more about the inside of the system without being able to run it and check... so I'm afraid I don't know much more.Any problems with wiring in the new house? Have you tried another outlet?

You could have knocked something loose in the move. I'm afraid opening the case is the only way to judge that.No problems with wireing. I am going to try a new outlet now. I don't think anything is loose.. I pressed on stuff but nothing seemed out of place. And it ran when it first got here.cownosecat

The operating system is Windows XP SP2.

The keyboard is PS2, the mouse is USB. The only other mouses I have are USB, and only other keyboard is PS2.

It's wierd because they seem to be getting some power. The wireless interenet has a little light that is on, the keyboards scroll lock and num lock and caps lock lights are working.

I have some new information though. When I plug in the mouse kind of halfway it's lights light up. And when I was plugging in the computer to a new outlet to try that out, I could hear a really bizzare sound comeing from it (the computer) without it even being turned on. It was like a wierd whirling chriping sound, very quit but kind of high pitched. It seemed to be comeing from where the computer's power cord connects to the computer. I tried a different power cord from another computer, and it produced the same strange noise.

I'm starting to think it definitly has something to do with power, and how the computer is dealing with it. cownosecat.... ok , this is what I would try first . lay your hands on a ps2 mouse and try that .... ( it might also be a good idea to unplug your printer if its USB ) as a test ........ It might be that something is going on with the usb contoller.
Test your monitor on another working system , just to rule it out .

The odd noise you report comming from the PSU , suggests that may be the problem ..... So shut down the machine and look to see if there is a heavy dust build up in the psu and on its cooling fan ....... If possible try switching that psu out out for one thats known to be working .
BTW , how old is this machine ?

dl65 Well, I tried it with another PSU and the wierd clicking noise went away, but the problem remained.

My computer is about three years old now.

Bleh, I am really starting to get sad. Sucks not having a working computer with all my work on it you know? I am willing to keep working on it as long as I can, but I fear I will some day just have to take it to an expensive computer repair place. My mom has a computer friend that she talked to, and he said it sounded like it was the motherboard. Any ideas?Quote

Solve : PC turns on the second it gets power.?

As soon as I plug my PC in it turns on but nothing else happens. My fan and motherboard turn on but the computer does not BOOT up. I have swapped out a POWER supply which I know works, and the same things happens. Any help is much appreiciated. What happened prior to this, what are the specifics of the machine, etc., etc.

See below.Sorry, I guess more details would definitely be hopeful for you. What happened was, out of the blue the PC just turned off. Since then this business of turning on the second it gets power has been happening. Now I took it in for repair, and they told me it was my processor and motherboard. I REPLACED my them, the processor is now an AMD Ahtlon 3200 and the motherboard is a ASUS A8V-MX. However the same PROBLEM still persists. The power supply is 300 watt. I hope this is enough information, if not ask me what you would like to know. Thanks again for any help.300W is on the lower end for newer machines...i would consider replacing the PSU.
Don't buy a cheap one they are nothing but headaches.
The other possibility would be a problem with the actual power switch itself. Find out if the shop tested this with a meter.

patio. 8-)And the burning question is a 300 watt what? What brand is on it?The power supply brand is Enhance, and the model is ATX-1125bta.I normally won't spend less than $75.00 on a PSU but that's just me...

patio. 8-)Enermax make nice PSU's along with many other makes but avoid cheap rubbish and many that come with cases.

Are you sure its not the hard drive?, Does anything display on the monitor?, Any beeps?

Nothing on the monitor, no beeps, just the motherboard light, and the cpu fan. This occurs even when the hard drive isnt connected.Quote

Well the first thing I would do and take it back and report that after $xx the problem is not fixed, soeither that wasn't the problem or they have not fixed it completely.

Solve : Need advice on processors?

Answer»

I'm getting a new computer, and I need to find out which processor is better. I'm choosing between a Pentium 4 670 Processor with HT Technology (3.80 GHz, 800 FSB), or Intel CORE 2 Extreme processor x6800 (2.93 GHz). I'm thinking that Pentium 4 with the 3.80GHz is better, but the Intel Core 2 is the new line of processors, so I'm not sure which is better. Can some of you, who know computer hardware tell which is better?Dual core is the latest buzz word so if you want to be cutting edge GO there. Speed isn't everything anymore.

Umm, that would be the second choice.Which one costs more? Duel-core. Newer technology...BIGGER bucks...for now

Alan <>< Not if you have checked lately...AMD just dropped their prices some 40% across the board including the new builds.

I love chip wars !

patio. 8-)Yes, except the people who just spent full price on a proccessor, then the next day they drop 40%. I imagine that must be really annoying. It $ucks!

Solve : Computer Overheating?

Answer»

I've been having this problem with my computer for quite some time, so I'll get into the story first as well as some information that I'm able to gather about my computer.

My computer screwed up the last time I had to get my computer fixed due to a thunderstorm which meant that the power supply was switched with a new one.

It's really weird because for some odd reason my comptuer turns off RANDOMLY and when I turn it back on again after a few minutes I get an error at the startup screen that the computer failed dued to overheating and that the problem should be fixed immediately.

I've asked a few friends and they've told me that it could be a software problem of some sort, but I know for sure this is not true because I've tried it using two operating systems and I still have the same problem.

Here is information that I was able to gather in terms of power specifications using Everest.

CPU Properties:
CPU Type Intel Pentium 4, 2200 MHz (22 x 100)
CPU Alias Northwood, A80532
CPU Stepping D1
Instruction Set x86, MMX, SSE, SSE2
Original Clock 2200 MHz
Min / Max CPU Multiplier 22x / 22x
Engineering Sample No
L1 Trace Cache 12K Instructions
L1 Data Cache 8 KB
L2 Cache 512 KB (On-Die, ECC, ATC, Full-Speed)

CPU Physical Info:
Package Type 478 Pin uPGA
Package Size 3.50 CM x 3.50 cm
Transistors 55 million
Process Technology 6M, 0.13 um, CMOS, Cu, Low-K
Die Size 131 mm2
Core Voltage 1.475 - 1.55 V
I/O Voltage 1.475 - 1.55 V
Typical Power 38.7 - 89.0 W (depending on clock speed)
Maximum Power 49 - 109 W (depending on clock speed)

Any help would greatly be appreciated, thanks in advance. Is this system being overclocked ? ?
Are all fans operating properly ? ?
Gaming MACHINE ? ?

More info and SOMEONE will be along shortly to assist...

Solve : How to network two laptops?

Answer»

Hello, all!

I tried searching for this topic but it DREW too many results and there was an error message. Here is my problem. I have an HP Pavilion that apparently experienced a surge; it still works well, but the display usually doesn't work. HP gave me some useful tips with that, and I can use an external monitor and sometimes even get the laptop to display on its own after the monitor has been connected for a while. However, I have another laptop, a Dell Inspiron B120, and I'd like to be able to connect the Pavilion to it so I could use the Pavilion's hard drive and air card (which doesn't fit in the Inspiron) with the Inspiron's display. Is there a way to do that?

Thanks in advance.

BarbYou can connect the two laptops using a crossover cable and you should be able to set up Internet Connection Sharing. And, file sharing is possible once the network is setup. But, you're going to lose some of the mobility benefit of wireless by having to connect them with a crossover cable. Maybe you should just get an extension cable to connect your good laptop directly to your modem. Or, get a wireless receiver that will fit the good laptop; one that connects a USB port is an option.

Sorry, but I'm going to leave the details of using a crossover cable for someone else. In the mean time, you MIGHT do a Google search on network two laptops.Just ask for a crossover cable from your local PC shop. If your two laptops have ethernet ports, you can do this. You will need to be able to change some settings on the dodgy laptop though to make it work.

Have a read of the networking FAQ (follow the link in my signature), then set laptop 1 to IP address 192.168.1.1 and laptop 2 to IP address 192.168.1.2.Quote

Thank you very much! I read the very helpful FAQ and then connected the two laptops with the crossover cable, ran the Network Setup Wizard and gave both of them the same workgroup name (I had named each of the two computers prior to this). The HP has an air card I would like to use for Internet connection, so I ran the wizard on that one first, with the connection active, and denoted that as the gateway computer. The Dell I noted as connecting to a residential gateway computer.

I rebooted, but now when I try to see the computers in my network via My Network Places, it tells me that this workgroup (WORK) is not accessible. I don't know what I did incorrectly or how to proceed from here. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

BarbDoes it work if you disable your firewalls? (Unplug from internet; disable firewalls; reboot both.)Windows network places seems to be so shotty when you try to set up small lans...I have this same problem. I finally just said *censored* with it and installed aim on both rigs for file transfer purposes. There has to be some kind of software out there besides windows server that makes for creating easy work groups that can share folder contents with ease...Any ideas?Quote
Windows network places seems to be so shotty when you try to set up small lans...I have this same problem.
I agree that it may be hard to understand and CORRECTLY configure a network, and yes, probably it OUGHT to be more simple - but a lot of sophisticated concepts are employed in order to make networking possible. The Windows networking wizards can't possibly cover every eventuality.

Your best bet is to understand the networking principles (see the networking FAQ for starters) - you will then find it much easier to set up LANs in a Windows peer-to-peer or client-server environment.Quote
Does it work if you disable your firewalls? (Unplug from internet; disable firewalls; reboot both.)

I wasn't knowingly running firewalls since I use Kaspersky Internet Security on both machines (and recommend it highly!). However, Windows Firewall had appeared again on the Dell; I usually have that disabled. I disabled it again and rebooted. After this, the icon in My Network Places disappeared, although I am still able to get to my workgroup through the link to view the entire network; however, it still gives me the "inaccessible" message.

I will try disabling KIS when offline, reboot, and see what happens.

In the meantime, too, I've realized that I had overlooked what Soybean said about Internet Connection Sharing. My main purpose in this adventure is to enable the Dell to use the air card that is in the HP, as well as to use the files and APPLICATIONS on the HP via the Dell's screen. The HP was set up to be the residential gateway and the Dell to connect through the HP to the Net, but now I have also enabled the HP's connection to be used by all computers on the network (just the Dell in this one). It hasn't worked, but there seems to be quite a lot to Internet Connection Sharing and I have to go through all the Help documentation on it more thoroughly.

Sincere thanks for the helpful suggestions, and I will check back with results soon.

1 PCI-E Graphics card
1 USB/ FIREWIRE card

Good for you, you did include a lot of details. How old is that power supply? Do you have another one to slip in there for a test?

My guess at this time is PSU and/or mobo. Since it happened right as youdid something, it could have shorted out the board in some bizarre fashion.

So TRY the PSU swap. If not, then think about a new board. Keep everything else unplugged for now except CPU/fan, RAM and video card.

The fact that it's a custom build does not matter. The main point is that it has a GeForce2 MX400 VIDEO card, according to your original post. Being an older card, it will surely have a VGA connector rather than a DVI. Again, if you're not sure about the difference in these two connectors, visit the link I provided in a previous post and look at the photos of the two TYPES of connectors. It's very easy to tell the type simply by looking at it.

Solve : Major Computer Malfunction???

Answer»

I've posted before about a LOUD noise in my HP modem. Here is what my computer has: 520 intel pentium; 512 MB; 160 GB, hopefully that helps, it's an HP Pavilion. My mom was on the computer the other day and she said it froze so she shut it down, I turned it back on and when I did, it went to the normal screen but the bottom toolbar, where it has start and the icons on the right side, were all gray, usually the toolbar is blue with a green start button. I figured out how to change that, but here is where I need help.

I connected to the internet and I can be connected for some time than when I click on the back button it says 'page cannot be found', so I check my internet to see if it's connected and that page won't even come up, it flashes up on my screen really fast and then nothing, so I have to restart my computer so I can reconnect to the internet. Also when I'm on the internet, the bottom blue toolbar changes to gray than back to blue, all by itself, and than it disconnects, is this a virus or what? My mom has Panda anti-virus but she had to turn off the anti-virus firewall otherwise the anti-vrius would not work, and now I think she has several viruses in her computer but I go to scan it and it won't scan, it just sits there, I think she has so many files and stuff in her computer it's pretty MUCH screwy, how can I fix this problem.

PS: Also I usually clean out all my files on my laptop and mine works fine, I go to control panel, and than it says restore memory/clean out unused files, I try to do that to my mom's PC and it won't do anything, it sits there, and it says 'may take a moment' I could be waiting for hours for it to go through, is there any thing else I can do to clean up her computer for her.

ONE more thing, The toolbar never changed like that in the middle of the internet and disconnected until she restored it back to several days ago. I highly reccomend going here http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3405-8022-5153545.html?part=dl-ad-aware&subj=dl&tag=top5 and downloading the free copy of Ad-Aware run it to do a full system scan and delete everything it picks up. Also this disk cleanup utility in the Start menu>Accesories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup. Check all of the boxes in the disk cleanup. You wont be removing anything important. I also recommend a better anti virus such as Norton...I have never heard of the one you mention. Let me know how that works for you Also what type of internet connection do you have? Sometimes I get a problem on my cable modem where my addressing doesnt update. Which CAUSES my pages not to display. Usually hitting the reset on the cable modem solves that problem.I have to add this: before it changes from blue to grey and than back to blue, this pop up message comes up frequently. It says "Generic Host Process for Win32 has encountered a problem and needs to close" I always click 'Don't Send' because towards the end it says 'do you WANT to send an error report' I click 'Don't Send', why is this message coming up and what is it? Could this also be a problem, what is Win32?We have dial-up, our internet company is suppose to be switching to High Speed, hopefully soon. I've tired the Disc Cleanup several times and it doesn't do anything, it just sits there.

Plain Win2K is not what you want for a server, by the way.

You could use internet connection sharing, I guess, if you like pain.

Follow Mark's advice. Get a connection from the "new" server to the router. Or get a wireless card for the server. There's nothing wrong with a 50 ft cable run (that must be a fairly large house you live in by the way). You'll get better results over cable than you would over wireless, over that distance.Have you ever used linux before? :-?
Have you ever set up a server? :-?
Are you going to use that pirated wireless signal for your internet access? :-?Quote
Why do you think a router requires a hub?

i need one in my room, that way i dont have to run two differant cables accoss the house...

and tucker, if you READ, rather than CRITISIZE, then you would REALIZE, that this is at my dads house, not at my grandma's.

Solve : computer overheated i smell smoke?

Answer»

Hello, well i have 2 computers 1 hp 1 emachines. The Emachines had all the jumper cables disconnect cuz i just switched hds and when i put the jumper cable on and power it up it just turned off automaticly and i could smell the burn. so i dont KNOW what to do. i dont know which PART burned. my guess is the reason it did that is because a jumper cable got in the fans way. Is there anyway to fix it, and if not i had another question. what parts of the burnt computer can i use on the 1 that works. i manely want to take out the graphics card on the burnt computer and put it in this 1 cuz its a good graphics card. but i dont know which part of the computer is the graphics card or how to switch it.If it was the fan on the central processor, the processor is toast (sorry for the bad humor). I'd suggest taking it to a computer repair shop and having them replace the processor for you. The motherboard and expansion cards and drives might still be undamaged.

yea im still a little slow what part is the processor and motherboard and expansion cards and drives lol

The motherboard is the large, flat object that everything inside the computer plugs into (think of it like the spine of your computer). The central processing unit (or CPU) is the rectangular or square shaped processor that plugs into the motherboard (think of it like the brain of your computer). It usually has a heatsink made of metal on top of it and a fan attached to the heatsink. Expansion cards are cards that plug into slots on the motherboard that expand what the computer can do and that things outside your computer plug into (think of them like the arms and legs of your computer).

The processor works so hard it gets hot and will burn up in little time if the fan on the heatsink stops spinning, which i'm thinking is the cause of your smoking problem.

Also, there is risk of electrocution or even death if you do not know what you are doing when you try to repair a computer, even if it is unplugged, so be careful.

If you INSIST on doing it yourself, unplug the computer and follow the advice at this Web site:

You will be OK if you unplug the computer and do NOT stick any object inside the power supply (the box with the electrical cord that plugs into the wall outlet.

The video card is likely the one with the connector with 15 holes that the connector with 15 pins from the monitor plugs into.

Other expansion cards you might want to use in the other computer are the NIC (network interface card), the modem (cable or dial-up), the sound card, and the USB card, to name a few. Your PC may have some or none of these expansion cards, as many motherboards have these capabilities build right into the motherboard itself.

Keep us posted.

Solve : Not Booting.?

Answer»

Hi to all,

I set up a computer and its not BOOTING,.

My computer spec.

Gigabyte motherboard. (GA 6VM7A+)
Intel Pentinum 3, 800 Mhz
ATX power supply.
256 MB RAM

when i connected the power supply and switched on..

its not booting... No screen at all.. i think its not getting started at all.

There is no BEEP when i switch on. CPU Fan running.

can u anyone help me in this.

thanks in advance.Your post is ambiguous. Do you mean you have added new hardware to a PC that was working prior to adding the new hardware and now it cannot boot to Windows as it used to do? If so, remove the new hardware you added and see if it will boot then.

If this is a computer you have built yourself and never started before now, you have to install Windows XP or some other operating system using the installation CD.

rais79...

Taking into consideration pcdoc4christ's post....another thing you might want to check is your power supply.

Just because your CPU fan is running, doesn't mean you have power. If the power supply is connected properly and working...you should be able to open the CD drive bay door. Take a whiff of your power supply, does it smell like it's burnt? If so, you may want to consider replacing your power supply.<--- Nods in agreement with Saviour. 8-)<----- Also likes Saviour's WEB site.

Solve : New Hardware.?

Answer»

Hi, I recently had a laptop for a friend to fix. The HDD was knackered so told them to buy a new one. I said buy a "Seagate-Momentus-42-ST94019A-40GB Hard drive" as it would slot straight in.
They have come back to me and said they bought this instead, because it was cheaper and had more memory!!!
Fujisu, 80GB 2.5” 4200RPM 8MB U100 bought at www.dabs.com Manufacturer code: MHV2080AT, Stock Type: HDIDE25

My question is, Is this new HDD compatable with the old one? and will i have to do anyhting extra as its a slightly different model??

The Laptop is a " Fulitsu Siemens Computers"

Thanks for any help. Some laptops are VERY picky about what works in them, others seem to tolerate anything. I would CHECK on the FUJITSU web site or e-mail them before opening the BOX if possible.

The other option is to just TRY it and see what happens. This is the link to her her new HDD.
http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=3Y47&SearchType=1&SearchTerms=MHV2080AT&PageMode=3&SearchKey=All&SearchMode=All&NavigationKey=0
Although its not a seagate like i told her to buy, it is a fujitsu, would this do any DAMAGE if i try and install this?No it will not damage anything. Just the caveat that it may not work. Quote

Solve : PC is locking up after using for a while Everytime?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 4400 running WINDOWS XP Pro, w/ 768 MB RAM & a Radeon 9700 Pro card.

The PC was bought in 2002 and was working fine when I went to sleep on Sunday August 13th. I moved the mouse in the morning on Monday and that's when the problems began:

I get 2 types of error messages. This is the 1st one:

---
svchost.exe

The instruction at "0x77c43dbd" referenced memory at "0x41414141". The memory could not be written.

---

After clicking the error message off, I can select programs like FireFox, WinWord, etc... but they won't appear, neither will the task manager when I do ctrl-alt-delete.

Soon enough it just locks up and I have to do a hard reboot.

If I reboot I can use the PC normally for a little while and then that same error message will pop up again.

I have no idea why this is occurring because everything was fine until Monday and I did not install, update or do anything between Sunday & Monday.
---

Then 2nd type of error is like this:

Here is a PIC of my normal desktop:

After I click off the svchost.exe error the desktop changes the LOOK of the task manager box & the desktop to something like windows 98 style:

Once it gets to that point I can't make anything run.
---

This is what the task manager looks like. When I took these pics I was only running Paint Shop Pro, there is a copy of all the running processes:

So, at this point I have 3 svchost.exe running as SYSTEM processes,
1 running as a NETWORK SERVICE
& 1 running as a LOCAL SERVICE
---

Basically, PC was working fine through Sunday but now it locks up. Sometimes the lockup takes 20 MINUTES. Sometimes it takes 2 minutes.I am personally going to give you the award for "Most Icons on a Desktop"!

Here's some info from your buddies at Microsoft:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314056

and from elsewhere:

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/svchost.htm

I can't see the top of your processes running there, but something may be taking up a lot more cycles than svchost.

What kind of malware protection is in use?I ran the tasklist /svc command at the prompt and got this:

I'm using both Spybot Search & Destroy & Adaware SE for malware.

Solve : Formatting HDD.?

Answer»

Hi, I have a new HDD I have just put into laptop. I am running xp installation cd, I have partitioned drive to about 20%, I now have message saying the partition i have selected is not formatted, then it gives me list of ways to FORMATT the HDD.

Formatt the partition using the NTFS file system (quick
Formatt the partition using the FAT file system (quick)
Formatt the partition using the NTFS file system
Formatt the partition using the FAT file system

Which ONE should i use??

What are the differences between the above.?

Thanks for any help. After i do the formatt of the 20GB partitioned section c:
would i then have to go and formatt the unpartitioned section of the remaining 56gb to be able to use it once installation has complete?Yes you can do that from Disk Management Tools. The space has to be partitioned BEFORE you can format it.

As to what filed system to use, if you have 512 RAM or more go for NTFS (not quick)

If you have less than 512 I would recommend FAT32 (also not quick). Thanks Bud, I have now partitioned and formatted(NTFS) C:

Should i now repeat the steps for the unpartitioned space? I reckon i should but thought to ask to be safe.

A section of unpartitioned space can`t be used once windows is installed on I.E C: section can it?
It has to be partitioned and formatted to create say a f drive, doesnt it?

What do i do about lettering the drives. C has come up automaically when i partitioned and formatted 1st section.
So what letter will be assigned when part/formatt second larger section. If d comes up wouldn`t that effect the cdr drive when xp installed?
C is the primary boot partition in a normal system.

The free space will have to be partitioned to be formatted and used. If you have already installed Windows any other partitions created will get the next drive letter after any optical drives, so it could be E or F, depending on how many drives you have. If you do it while you are installing Windows it will get the next drive letter after C (i.e. D)

I do my systems by creating all of the partitions within the Windows installation, right after the EULA screen when you have to press F8. You do not have to format the extra drives created at that time, and you must be sure that you are CHOOSING C to install Windows on. After Windows is installed you can format the additional drive(s) and use them.

THere are ways to reassign drive letters afterwards, but if Windows is on C, that is the main thing.

I know my computer can see my hard drive because I can see it in the BIOS, I just don't understand why I have to press F1 to continue on. I also know that the hard drive WORKS (or I wouldn't be using this computer! ) If SOMEONE can help me with this, that would be great.

My second ques is this:
How do I get more virtual memory? I'm RUNNING Window's XP and the system told me that the virtual memory was low. Will that make my computer run slower or should I even worry about it?

Solve : Packing an LCD screen.?

Answer»

I sent my MONITOR BACK a couple weeks ago for repair and got it back without the original packaging I sent it in. The screen used to have this plastic shield you tape to the sides to keep the screen from getting scratched or scuffed, and was returned with that plastic film stuff that comes on the TOPS of cable boxes or tiny screens that you tear off when you get.

I was just wondering what I could put on the screen before I PACK it for my move to keep it from getting scratched or scuffed. Ceran? What would you USE? Thanks.I like those foam peanuts or bubble wrap, as do my kids. No, for the screen, not the actual monitor. You know, so the screen itself doesn't get scratched.Quote

You should be all right with a reasonably thick plastic bag, I would have thought. Then bubble wrap around that. Then surround it all with foam peanuts, but don't forget to save some for the kids.

Solve : Line at Startup???

Answer»

Ever since the day my computer started to suck. Lines would appear on my screen during bootup.

They are >>> a line of those things, in the middle of the screen, but they are pointing down, not to the side. What is causing this? I'll record a video of the computer booting up if that makes it any EASIER for you guys.winterdude,

It's sad that your computers SUCKS...and we'd like to help...but A LOT more information is needed, like:

System specs
When did it first start? Did it ever work right? Have you added any hardware/software lately?

You know, stuff like that.

Alan <>< OK, specs.

1.4GHz Intel Pentium 4
14.8 GB free out of a 30Gig Hard Drive
nVIDIA Geforce FX 5200 Video Card

It started when we got the virus (which has since been removed by a computer company, and our antivirus software) When the lines began, it also slowed start up time. When boot up gets to the Windows XP logo and loading thingy, it takes two or three minutes to start the computer. Where as it was faster before. I can't remember if they were there when we got the new video card or not. I believe they were though.

Clearly the damage done by the virus has not been REPAIRED. How much did you pay that company?

Your easiest option at this stage is a reinstallation of Windows, since it's virtually impossible to say how extensive the damage is.Well that sucks, now I have to find that WinXP BACK up install DISK...Everyone needs a real Windows CD sometime. This is your time.

Hello, I'm Lara from Italy. I've just BOUGHT a new computer, the case is an ASUS chassis, with audio ports on the FRONT, and I've got an Asrock motherboard with video and audio cards on BOARD.

The audio front ports don't work... Do I have to enable them somehow?

Thanks for your help

LaraSome motherboards have to have the front ports wired in to work. Some will only allow front or BACK at one time. It just depends what you have. How about posting the model # of the board and we can look for a manual? Or do you already have one of those?Thank you for your reply

My motherboard is an Asrock AM2NF4G-SATA2

The front ports are on the case, an ASUS Chassis Mini Tower TM-25 Series, and they're already connected to the motherboard...

I tried to check the bios, but I couldn't find anything... How are they called in the bios?

Thanks

You should be able to get a manual here if you don't have one. All of this should be covered there. You forgot the link, mate. I guess his Google button is gone too.

Solve : Hard Disk and Soundcard Problem.?

Answer»

Hey hope SOMEONE can help me out. My computer was running really slowly so i restored it to factory condition and everything seemed to be going ok, it was running much faster. But the first problem is that my second hard drive that i installed a while after purchasing the pc won't show up in "my computer". It's DISPLAYED in device manager but under it's properties it says it's functioning properly but under the volumes it has a capacity of 0Mb.

The other problem i have is that my soundcard isn't working. I have a SOUND Blaster Audigy but it's not being detected. The software and drivers are still there but whenever i run the diagnostic tests it says that it cannot find a sound card and to check it's connected correctly. I know it is correctly connected as it was working right before i wiped the computer.

It'd be a great help if someone could solve one or both of these... :-?good details on the nature of the problem and how it started. We still need to know:

1) Complete Specs for the PC
2) Specs for the HD that doesn't work properly?
3) Complete Specs for the sound card?

It's a Multivision with AMD Athlon XP 2200+ with 1Gb Ram, the original hard drive's a Maxtor 80Gb the new one's a seagate Barracuda 7200.9 160Gb. I'm sorry i don't know much about the soundcard other than it being a soundblaster audigy and i can't find out through my computer because it's not showing up.okay. so far so good. is there anything irreplaceable on the seagate HD? (just in case)I would prefer to KEEP the STUFF that's on it but it's mostly replaceable, music etc.Can anyone help?hang on. i'll get someone here.ok have you tryied turning your computer off unplugging the slave drive and replugging it in??

for the sound card uninstall the drivers and reboot and reinstall the driversOk thanks the sound is fixed but the hard disk still isn'tcan u take the hhd out and put it in another computer and see if it get recongizedI couldn't do that very easily i'm afraid.have you tried to do an unrestore?? if u used system restore....I fixed it by opening up the computer management section in the administrative tools then converting the disk from dynamic to basic in the disk management section. Solve : Urrrrgggghhh !!!?

Answer»

I'm having some "ISSUES" with trying to install a PCI Pny GeForce FX5200 256MB card.
The box that it's going into is an eMachine T1150. It's got an Intel Celeron 1.30 Ghz with Intel 810e Chipset.
When I install the card the monitor is usually blank on boot or right after the XP Windows Screen...then the monitor will shut down (green light to yellow)
In the bios I have tried to set the the video PCI and nothing happens (default is AGP, but the boards has no AGP Slot ?? )
When I boot up with the mother board video, everything comes up as it should. In device manager I can see that both are installed (Default & Geforce)

What am I doing wrong, in that I can't get the Geforce to function at all ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Z
I'm not too hardware savvy, so hopefully one of the OTHERS might offer better help, but look at the following:

1. Does your eMachine allow you to put it in? Some brand names don't like you putting in hardware made by others.
2. Consider the graphics card itself could be faultly. When handling, did you take anti-static electricity precautions? Try the graphics card in another computer, if you can.
How many PCI SLOTS do you have? Which one did you install the video card in?I would imagine that I could add the card to the eMachine box, I have an email to them, but have not gotten a response yet.
I believe that there are 4 PCI slots (Friends computer, don't have it in front of me) and the card is in the last slotThis machines has on board video, is there a disable onboard video option in bios. If so this could be your problem, also note that if there was not a memory UPGRADE the video card minimum requirement is 128 mb
below is the 2 links to these products if that will help.

http://www.emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Desktops&subcat=T-Series&model=T1150There is no onboard video option in the bios, only PCI and AGP (Default)
The computer has 128 MB RAM...I'll try to upgrade that asapQuote

By "last", I presume you mean the bottom slot. Some computer are slot-sensitive for PCI video cards. Try installing the video card in the top slot. If that slot already has something in it such as a sound card, put it in a different slot so that the top slot is AVAILABLE for the video card.So your video card has TWICE as much RAM as your entire system? This should definitely be rethought. The computer belongs to a friend of mine, this all started when his son wanted to play more extreme games...I was shocked when I saw it only had 128mb.
I told him that he needed to add more.
I found a couple of 265mb sticks that I'm going to install for him

I'll try swiching the cards around and let ya know what happens"Extreme games" and "FX5200" do not belong in the same sentance together, sorry Well...I got the card to install. I disbled the onboard, and once I was able to boot to VGA mode, it was a piece of cake from there.
Of course adding more RAM for a total of 512mb helped to

Thanks to all for the input
