Solve : Question about EAX?

Answer»

Hi

I have an Audigy 2 sound card and was wondering if i have to install the software that came with it, in order to have EAX, or will the latest driver be ENOUGH without installing the software. I have noticed from a previous install in the software disc, that there is an EAX console, wich you are able to switch on and off. Its just im unclear because in alot of games there is ALSO an option to switch EAX on. Or do i need to install both the software and also switch EAX on in game.i do believe, from what i have read, the sound blaster audigy 2 has hardware supported EAX. meaning you shouldnt have to install software in order to USE it.

Solve : eMachines monitor/CPU won't work?

Answer»

I posted this in the Windows forum but I think it's better here...please read and help.
Last night I TURNED off the monitor, turned it back on (because I'm nuts), and then turned it off. This morning when it was turned on, it went to the screen it GOES to when the hard drive CPU is off but the monitor is on. Yet -- the bottom hard drive had been turned on. I have no IDEA of how to fix this! Does anyone have any ideas of how to fix this error??

Update: Now the CPU won't even turn on.So your computer was up and running, but the monitor was acting like it was not getting a signal, like the computer was turned off right? No picture, PROBABLY an orange light on the monitor, but the computer was in fact on and running right? First off, has anything in your computer changed recently? Have you tried another monitor? Have you tried same monitor on a different computer? Try these situations if you can so that you can PINPOINT what the problem is, but it sounds like your video card or monitor are bad.

Solve : black screen of death!?

Answer»

Wondering if anyone can GIVE me a hand with this problem. It's what a friend of MINE used to call the black screen of death! My monitor screen is blank, if I turn the monitor off and then back on the light is green for a bit then goes orange. If I turn off my computer and the monitor, the computer will turn on and then the monitor will click back to the orange light. When I restart my computer there is no beep when it starts up like usual. Please let me know if this is something I can fix myself, any help would be appreciated! There isnt anything wrong with your screen, its just telling you if it is on standby or on (green=on / orange=standby)Sounds like a loose connection to me. Check the back of your computer for a wire with a blue CONNECTOR and two twist-knobs sticking out. Tighten this if needed. Also, check the connections on the monitor itself; on some monitors it plugs in both sides (as opposed to being soldered on and impossible to remove) and either one could be loose.

Your friend was probably referring to the Blue screen of death, or BSOD. For more information on the BSOD, Click Here. This has been addressed several times (again) just this week. Do a FORUM search.

Solve : 2 PC's neither boot??

Answer» INTEL processors shut down if the heat is too great (THERMAL protection). I would start with checking the heat sink/fan. Are there any jumpers you have to SET on the mnotherboard? Are you 100% positive that processor is compatible with that MOTHERBOARD?No..I've since changed the RAM this is a new problem
It shuts off after about 15 SECONDS with the new RAMMan thanks for the tip! I had the heat sink spun 90 degrees the wrong way any it must have been overheating. It's loading Windows right now and I couldn't be happier to get these two out of my house should start building another one next week. I'd like to keep reading and posting to learn more hope that's on the up and up with everyone? I'll just shutup and listen! We like happy endings. Glad you are all fixed up.

Solve : Trouble Starting My Computer?

Answer»

I got my computer four years ago when I graduated from high school. It is a VPR Matrix 2250 and has ran very well for the entire time I've owned it.

Around January it started having trouble. Instead of just pressing the button on the front of the tower once and it powering on, it needed to be pressed about three or four times. It has got progressively worse and requires about five minutes of button pressing to get it to start up. Nothing is wrong with the system and everything is running as normally as it always has, but now I fear that when I TURN off my computer I will not be able to ever turn it back on.

Is this a problem with the button not being connected very well to the thing that starts it up, or is my power supply about to bite the dust? Any THOUGHTS would be appreciated greatly because I PLAN on moving soon and will have to hold my BREATH if the problem has not been solved.

Thanks in advanceQuote

Is this a problem with the button not being connected very well to the thing that starts it up, or is my power supply about to bite the dust?
Most likely causes (in order of likelihood):
 • power switch jumper not firmly connected to motherboard
 • power supply
 • power switch
 • motherboard
So after checking all your connections are sound, the next step would be for someone who knows what he/she is doing to swap the PSU. Fiddly, but not too DIFFICULT.

Solve : Videocard trouble?

Answer»

Hi everybody!
I probably have a TROUBLE with my videocard (I've got GeForce MX-440). It shows black stripes from time to time, especially when I try to play games ("Heroes" are a complete disaster!). Could anybody give me advice?
DOWNLOAD the most up to date drivers >here< and install them.Does it only do it within games? If in more than that it MAY be a failing graphics card DUE to heat, old age, ETC. If the updated drivers don't fix it, we can pusue that.

Solve : Ill-logical drive?

Answer»

Hi. I'm having a little PROBLEM with fdisking a 6Gb hard drive, which I use to test different things on. I want to make three partitions, so I use my '98 startup disc and RUN fdisk. The drive won't let me delete the extended DOS partition because it says that I have logical drives which need to be removed first. Well when I try to delete them, it says they are not defined. So now what? The extended DOS part is only 290Mb.
I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks. :-/You can use a Windows 98 boot disk to do this, assuming the drive geometry is correct. If you continue to have problems, you can also download a Linux CD (Slackware Disk 1, for instance) and use the CFDISK utility to remove ALL partitions. A BORROWED Win2000 or XP disk will do it also.Thank you for your reply, GX1_Man. Since posting, I did find my Win 98 boot disc and used it to totally reinstall Windows 98 all on one partition. Then I went to fdisk and partitioned it for three drives and formated and installed '98 on one of them. Quite a hassle, and a lot of time. I'm going to try again to install Linux Ubuntu on one of the partitions. Do you think I'll have any problem putting it on a 2 Gb partition? Anyway thanks for the help.
Ken 2 gigs isn't much, but it will probably fit. THe newest version may be too resource intensive. I am not sure what hardware we are working with. I COULD advise better if I knew that. Glad you are all fixed up though! If you're planning on using a graphical install of Ubuntu (i.e. as a WORKSTATION, not as a server), you will quickly run out of elbow room on a 2GB partition. You should probably be aiming at 10GB as a minimum, partly because there's just so much free software available (much of which will not drain your system resources, other than hard drive space, in any discernible way).

Solve : DVD Copy Problem?

Answer»

I get the FOLLOWING message when I try to copy a DVD using Sonic Record Now.
"Please insert a blank or rewritable DVD into the _NEC DVD+RW (E:) drive"

The blank DVD is new, and I've tried 2 other brands.
The DVD I want to copy will play without any problem.
Tried to drag & drop and get same message.

Dell 8300
2 GB
XP

Suggestions ??

ThanksAre you trying to copy some copyrighted material (LIKE a movie)?

Did this used to work or is this your first time? If it used to work what has changed and how long has this been going on?

What burning software are you using?

No copyrighted material. My daughters wedding from this past weekend.
First time to copy DVD.
I did copy all the pics to a CD from hard drive yesterday without any problem.
The DVD I want to copy was CREATED on a VHS > DVD recorder.

The DVD will play on other DVD playes and on the Dell, its just when I try to make the extra copies
that the drive ejects and will not accept a blank disc.

Im using "Sonic Record Now" to copy, but the copy to DVD is ejected with the message Insert Blank.I've never used Sonic, but most of those preloaded programs are just throways. If you get Nero it will do it readily.

By the way, congratulations! Have you tried to use a imaging program such as clone CD or alchool 120%? You can download a trial of CLONECD herehttp://static.slysoft.com/SetupCloneCD.exe. You may also try Nero burning ROM or Nero Express , avaible herehttp://ftp://ftp5.use.nero.com/software/nero7/Nero-7.2.3.2b_eng_no_yt.exe.Issue resolved. System list drive as DVD/CD-RW, but the disc has to be DVD+RW. .

Solve : Hard Drive Accessing?

Answer»

Does anyone ever have an experience with their HARD drive where it seems to be active for a second every 5 seconds. Sometimes is goes AWAY but then comes back.
Like a tap drip.It is annoying in the least and am curious as to what is the cause. It began several DAYS ago. I disable my internet connection and have no network and it still does it. Is it a virus that is EMBEDDED and is active even when not connected to the internet.
I have checked using AVG, AD Aware and SpyBot. Nothing!

Or is it some internal ACTIVITY with the system. My task manager does not show anything unusual and CPU usage is at about 1 - 4%.
I have cold booted and it is back.
ThanksThat is often a sign of hard drive failure. I would check the drive with the free diagnostics you can download from the appropriate manufacturer's web site PRONTO!

Solve : CARDreaders, MMC card, Multimedia files problem?

Answer» HI hope you give me some opinion, I bought an mp3 player with a removable memory feature, so that i can test the device i took an old 16mb MMC card from my digital camera and replace the photo FILES with Mp3 files I intalled it on the Mp3 player after a couple of hours of listening i turned it of (i think) put it in the cabinet and went to sleep. the following day I again took it from the cabinet to do further test listening after a few second of play the device just freezed to a stop with power indicator light still on, no response to controls either.....I removed the MMC card from the Mp3 player and placesd it on a card reader in my PC hoping to remove what i assumed a corrupted file in the MMC card, but still I cant open it! the PC just "freezes" whenever i make an action relating to openning the MMC files......i have to remove the card to revive my pc into activity.....What could have happened? Is the Mp3 player defective, is there a fault in my operation of the mp3 player?...can i still fix the MMC card....IM asking this because im planning to buy a 128mb mmc card and i want to know if its wise to use it in that expandable mp3 player again. Can you FORMAT the MMC card? It shows up in My Computer as a Device with Removable Storage, right? So, right click on it and SELECT Format. hi soybeans tnx, yup ive done that format thing and the card reader/writer shows up in "my computer" as drive "J". but when i click it, it just freezes! i have to remove the MMC card to open the dropdown window, then again inserting the card, but when i clik "FORMAT" it again freezes,....I again have to remove the card so that the "FORMAT" Dropdowns would appear. with the MMC card inserted again i Click "START FORMAT" and guess what ? FREEEEEEZ !!! again. :-(Well, you might try formatting it from a Command Prompt. Need any instructions?

Edit: my suggestion is confirmed by HOWTO : Repair a Corrupted MobyMemory Card with your PC. If you're not familiar with formatting from a Command Prompt, be sure ask for more info. You don't to accidentally format drive C, now do you?

Solve : Monitor Randomly Turning Itself Off?

Answer»

Hello,

I have a mildly annoying problem - that is rapidly MOVING to hampering functionality. About 2 weeks ago - whether working at the computer or not - the monitor would just shut itself off for a few seconds (maybe 3-5 seconds in duration). Everything on screen would be fine...just that the monitor would make a "pop" noise (a digital one sort of like what you hear when a pop up blocker nabs a window), the screen would go black and then come back. During this down time, the green power light will turn off completely (does not drop to the stand-by ORANGE) and then come back when the screen is good again.

It did this maybe once a day...but the last few days it is happening very frequently and in clusters (it'll shut down like 5 times in 15 minutes). It is now actually impeding my work.

I don't know much about computers and I have read online to check drivers and VIDEO CARDS and both appear to be (according to Windows) the 'right' and up-to-date ones. I checked the AC cable and it is secure and the power source is great (as the PC, printer, speakers, lamp, etc...all run fine).

The monitor is a 17" flat panel Daewoo F217. Had it for about 2 years now - never any real problems (it is not the greatest quality) and I am not looking to spend any money on upgrading.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can/try.

You guys rock!
Thanks in advance.1) Try another monitor on your computer. Let us know if the other monitor works.

2) Try your monitor on another computer. Let us know if your monitor does the same thing.

3) Report back here.1) Try another monitor on your computer. Let us know if the other monitor works. - Will do tonight

2) Try your monitor on another computer. Let us know if your monitor does the same thing. - Will be able to do on Wednesday

3) Report back here. - Yes sir.

Thanks for your attention squirrel.OK guys...

1) Try another monitor on your computer. The other monitor seemed to work just fine.

2) Try your monitor on another computer. Working on my home monitor at the office and after 2.5 HRS it just did it's first 'incident' - twice in about 5 mins. So, it is doing the same thing driven by a different PC

Last night at home it was getting really bad too...

I am at your mercy - any thoughts, comments and opinions would be welcomed!!!
THX.

If the monitor does it regardless of PC then it sounds like a monitor issue. You can have it serviced, but that may not be cost effective. That call is up to you.

Two years for a Daewoo may be a full life. GX1_Man: Appreciate the comments - I agree, I cannot RIGHTFULLY be too pissed after 2 years with this monitor - it looked good, quality was acceptable and the price was right!!!I've got old Viewsonics that have been at it for over 7 years with never a problem. Daewoo I just don't know about. A lot of these fancy LCD's will be out soon after the warranties end, I'll bet. The product just hasn't been around for longevity studies.

Solve : Plaid Screen?

Answer»

Hi guys, I was playing a video game on my PC today when all of a sudden my screen turned into a bunch of lines, that I can only describe as being a plaid pattern. I hit the power to turn off my pc and when it rebooted the same lines were all over the screen again, and I was unable to see ANYTHING on screen much less do anything about it. I think windows still loaded, but I could hear my PC rebooting after a few mins. Do you think that my graphics card is not working or is it something else. Thanks. The first thing i WOULD LOOK at is the GFX card, See if you can Borrow one form some one and give it a go.

But first Reaseat the one you have , IE take it out and put it in again.

I may have overheated playing the game and Burnt out.How about some specifics about your equipment, it's AGE, what things have changed recently, etc. ?

Solve : How to upgrade to HFS Plus on a regular HD?

Is it possible to upgrade from HFS to HFS Plus on a regular PC Hard DRIVE?

Might be some helpful info in some of the finds here: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=convert+HFS+to+HFS+Plus&btnG=Search
Well, my first QUESTION is this:
Is it safe to switch this type of format?
Its done with the highly magnetic sectors. And it switches the counting the harddrive HEAD does. (But it does increase space if you have a LOT of small files)Why would you want to do this?Quote
Why would you want to do this?
HFS Plus allows you to use more of your hard drive. Only one file can be stored per sector, and with HFS Plus, you can have smaller sectors, allowing more files, and more disk scape to be used. It's like Jurassic PARK. "I know we CAN do this but SHOULD we do this?"Quote
It's like Jurassic Park. "I know we CAN do this but SHOULD we do this?"
LOL
Exactly. So, I know if I try hard enough, I bet I can, but SHOULD I try?

Solve : The install server is not working....?

Answer»

*Hopes this is in the right spot*

First off; Please pardon my spelling and grammer.

Ok, something tells me I'm going to need a lot more help then this help site, but I would like to try to fix this with out paying $100's on a repare guy. :-/

I bleave that this is all my falt because I was trying to fix somthing quickly and wasn't paying full attention. I like doing graphic arts and for a friend I was trying to make a gift image, YET I have known for about two weeks before that my photoSuite just stopped saveing .gif images for some reasion. So I decided to try and uninstall PhotoSuite and then re-install it to see if it would start saving the images then. When I was doing this I skimmed through this part saying that "these programs are/can be used by other programs" and then I thought it said would you like to not dleate them, but it said would you like to deleat them. So more or less I started dleating a bunch of graphics/programs that I needed for other programs. I panicked when I relized this and shutdown my pc with out finishing the un-installing process. (stuped I know) THINKING that when I re-started it up the screen would come up saying "improper shutdown, would you like to run a scann...." and all that. (on my fathers PC it always comes up) I HOPED that the screen would also say "start up with last known WORKING settings" and what not so I could just go to right before I started to un-install. But that dint happen.

Well after being upset that I couldn't re-install or compleatly un-install my PhotoSuite program I just kinda blue it off. Yet it *just now* occured to me that since then I cant seem to install anything on to my pc. (besides for a spyware remover)

Today I was trying to install an (activeX controle ) or something for an online game. The Windows Installer Screen came up fine and all but then it just stopped. So I tryed to canceln it, and its not going past "CANCELING.." (good 15 minuets now)

So I figged I would install a 'recamened update' for my pc, and then re-set the pc. That frose, so I tryed to cancle it, when I did that I got an error message saying that the install server can not be accesed or is not working. I'm thinking the Easiest thing to do would be Reinstall windows,

so i recommend you start backing up data, and since it your fathers machine, just tell him something has gone horridly wrong, and he needs to back up all his data Before it all go's to pot. No need to lie, just don't say what you did.

But in future Don't Turn off your computer in the middle of an install or uninstall,

Also think about this, you were uninstalling a Program you intended to put back on , so don't you think it would put the Common Files it wanted back? You don'y say what operating system your dad is using. IF it's Windows Xp and IF you can boot into safemode (Tapping F8 key when system boots) then go to System Restore and see if you can restore it back to a date prior to the problem.

Solve : Can softwares damage HDD permanently??

Answer»

I had a rather simple question:

I have a... friend... who has used presumably illegal windows(burned CD. Assuming all burned CDs are illegal) for two years. It has worked flawlessly for the two years. However, the computer failed to boot one morning after shutting off fine the previous night(no errors whatsoever), saying something along the lines of "cannot read disk." After making sure it is not a problem that can be solved easily(checked if there is any floppy disk, checked cable connections etc), it was taken to a professional, who said that the HDD is "busted" and needs to be replaced. He claimed that it might be illegit windows' fault if the computer was using it.

My question is this: Is it possible for a software(illegal or not) to gradually damage the HDD to the point where it must be replaced? I have little to no knowledge on this matter, but I figured if a software runs fine for over an year, it suddenly corrupting the HDD severely wouldn't happen. Also note that two other computers are still running using the windows from the exact same CD that was used on the busted computer.

Appreciate any inputs in advance.

P.S. Please note that I am asking for neither flames or supports. I simply wish to find out if the problem was the illegit windows' fault or something different, so that two other computers MAY be saved before it's too late.Specs for all three computers, please?

Are any of the HDD's maxtor drives? No but I bet Microsoft is working on a way to do it. surmise....... I would concurr with the response from Fed .......... It is more likely that the hard drive simply failed ........ I have had hard drive failures using legit M/S operating systems ........ It just happens .

dl65 Absolutely not. Quote

Absolutely not.

I don't know if I am supposed to make another post to ask another question(don't want to flood these forums :-? ), so I'll just go ahead and ask in this post:

If it's not the windows suddenly revolting(I knew it didn't make much sense. *censored* "professional"...), what might cause the HDD to malfunction?

I ask, because I have owned two computers before this one(one used from 1994 to 1998, one used from 1998 to 2004) and I didn't even know a HDD could actually fail.

The only difference, as far as I know, between this one and the ones I've owned previously is that this one was "built" and the rest were branded(Del, etc). May be the builders of this particular computer decided to put cheaper stuffs in(now that I think about it, CD/DVD ROM was defacted and was exchanged two days after purchase, motherboard had its "volts(don't remember exactly)" burned out and was needed to be replaced, and now HDD...

My apologies for making the post longer than intended to be, I always tend to make things longer than needed What I want to know the most at this point: Does the type of HDD make significant difference in a computer's performance? I know that it affects how much a HDD can store, but does it affect the performance as in SPEED and stability? Any recommended brand/specs I can use to purchase a new one?Quote
what might cause the HDD to malfunction?

Poor construction, poor design, excessive heat, power surges, random occurrence, bad luck, act of God...the list goes on.

ALL hard drives die eventually. It is just a matter of when. They are electo MECHANICAL devices.

Quote

Some people will rant and rave that one brand is better than another (based usually on their personal experience with one drive failing). The only thing that affect how much it can store is the design and size. This is all determmined when the drive is manufactured. Newer, larger drives run hotter and will no doubt last shorter periods of time, due to this and the usual Windows thrashing about during use.

There are basically 3 major makers of widely available consumer drives - Western Digital, Seagate, and Maxtor. Other brands can be found in branded machines, but are generally less available at Best Buy, etc.- Hitachi, Samsung, etc.

As I mentioned all will have their fans and detractors. If someone says something like "all Maxtors are crap" then they are probably full of Maxtor. There is a Software program i Think is Built for Frying HDD's

Its Called Telexper, it a Video Recording Program, For a CCTV system, it has Fryed Many a Maxtor, so i Try a few other Brands Seagate Western Digital, They All Fryed the Same, Went back to Maxtor Purely for Cost(Maxtor are the Cheapest).

Don't use Telexper DVR's they Do in fact Suck, I have been installing them for the last 6 Years. Alto you might find allot of them Suffer The Fate of a bad environment. And the ones they Made 6 years ago worked much better. Any way thats Off topic.

From what you said a bout how many parts in you PC BROKE , i would put it down to a Bad Build, the Guy you bought it from was not very Good at his jobI'm going to go against the flow here and say yes, it is theoretically possible for software to wreck a hard drive. The most obvious way would be to instruct the disk subsystem to constantly retrieve files at opposite positions on the hard drive platters.

This results in something called "thrashing", where the read heads are going backwards and forwards rapidly. The physical hard drive controllers can MITIGATE this (I believe) by caching for example, but only to a limited extent. If you have a detailed knowledge of how the physical interface works and its limitations, I do think it would be possible to write low-level code to overtax the drives and cause premature failure.Thank you so much I learned a lot!

The help and information you guys provided were A+ and at no cost!

A++++ would buy from again 8-)Aaugh! Duped into helping with homework! /me cringesFor the record, That guy who stole the source for Half Life 2 before it was released, was later imprisoned for that theft, along with releasing a virus that Destroyed HDD's I assume through methods similar to those mentioned by Rob above * scary thought * (although the virus didn't really spread out, so it was never a major threat, Still got him quite a few years in prison though )

- DoomsayerBut back to whether or not the pirated Windows caused it, I still vote no.

Solve : Switching hard drives and video cards?

Answer»

Okay, I have 2 computers. Both Dell OptiPlex GXi. Both with Maxtor hard drives. I want to switch hard drives, one is a 40GB other 10GB.
I'm putting the 40 GB into my 700mhz, and the 10GB into a 133 mhz. I know how to physically take them out, but don't know if after switching them around, that the system will recognize them.
How does the system react to a new hard drive if you don't have the installation disk for it? All I have is a diskette for Maxtor install utility. It WIPES the hard drive clean and partitions and reformats it.
I did that on the 40 GB already. and got the operating system reinstalled on it. So now all it holds is the OS and a internet connection.
But, I get a message during bootup ...... Hard disk controller 1 failure
Hard disk drive 1 failure
Strike the F1 key to continue
or F2 to run the setup utility
So I can get to the set up screen, and by pressing the F1 key I get to my desktop and all it ok.
But my computer doesn't recognize the hard drive. It is not listed as my hard disk in my device manager. it has the Intel processor on the mother board.(? I assume)
The Drive C reads like it had the 40 GB. How do I get my computer to use the hard drive? And should I wait till I switch the drives around?
my computer is slower that usual. I used this one as my main computer before I got my new Gateway. So I know it didn't used to be that slow.
I've been to the Maxtor site and that is no help.
I downloaded a PowerMax diskette and checked the Maxtor hard drive and after a complete scan it all PASSED.
Can someone help me with this hard drive problem?

Next issue. I want to switch video cards. I want to switch my 16 bit Video card with the 4 bit . I have already installed the 16 into the one I want it in. On the OUTSIDE is the plug for the monitor. But when I restart the computer with my monitor plugged into the new video card. it won't get past the starting Windows 2000 screen. It just stops right in the middle of the loading bar.
But if I plug the monitor into the plug for the video card on the motherboard, it works fine. I get to my desktop and can get to my add new hardware program.
So my question is, If I remove the video card that it is using on the motherboard will that allow the system to detect the new one I installed? And how do I get the system to recognize it?
OKAY

1. How does the system react to a new hard drive if you don't have the installation disk for it?

If I haven't given you enough information post a response and I'll try and answer any more questions if I've forgot something.

I'm switching things around because I am giving my old computer to a friend. But the one that I'm keeping only has a 10 GB hard drive and I want to keep the 40 GB. The computer I'm keeping only has a 4 bit video card and I want to keep the 16 bit. The computer that I'm giving away has a 133 Mhz and the one that I'm keeping is a 700 Mhz.
So If I were to just upgrade my new computer I would have to spent like $170. And after all I'm giving it away, and the person I'm giving it to only needs it to check e-mail and play solitare!Well, the older machine sounds like a GXi if it has a PI-133 processor, the newer one likely a GX110, but I digress.

You do not need any kind of utility from the drive maker to get this to work. Just install the drive in the machine you want and turn it on. Press F2 when you see the dell logo on the GX110 and you will go to the BIOS/setup screen. THere you will see the hard drive. IDE O should be set to auto and the drive size correctly displayed. Press Escape to save the changes and you are ready to go.

The GXi requires Ctl+Alt+Enter (I believe, but it will say on screen when the machine starts) to get to the BIOS. THe procedure once there is the same.

If either of these situations are not exactly like this please post back and we will go from there.

Both drives should be jumpered as Cable Select (CS) and that is the Dell default so there should be nothing to change.

You must format the drives and install an operating system to get them to work correctly. Any previous VERSION of Windows will be looking for hardware that is not present in the new machine. Sometimes it will attempt to work, and will boot up and need a lot of drivers, etc., but you should do it correctly at the outset. Either this or the jumpers settings would cause the situation you describe.

All of the appropriate drivers for any operating system are readily available on the Dell website. If you post the service tags (seen in the lower right hand corner of the Setup screen and probably on the machine, we can help you more.

Again, post back if any questions.Yes older one is GXi
Newer one is a GX100
So after hard drives are in I deleted all partitions. Then created a Primary DOS and Extended DOS
reads...
c: 1 A Pri Dos 2047 MB Fat 16 21%
2 Ext Dos 7483 Mb 79%

set drive 1 active, format C: /S
at a: prompt swithed to C: then setup
Loading Windows overnight. But here are the service tags.
Service tags for GXi - B6B5V
GX100 - 9T5V901
Can you help with the video card issue?
How do I get the newer computer to recgonize the new video card?If the GX100 can use the GXi's video card, just download the drivers for Win98 from the Dell site for the GXi, and run the install program.

The GX100 had onboard video so there will be nothing to move over, unless you added in a video card. GXi's usually had a 2-4 meg card stock.Help again!
Now I have everything switched BUT...................
The GXi Hard drive reads that it is only 2 MB Why?
And now the GX100 Modem won't detect. Why? I am running 98 in the GX100 and I have taken the modem out and started the computer . PUT the modem back in then restarted. But it still doesn't detect it has been added. I have the installation disk.
HELP!If the hard drive is formatted as FAT16, the max size is a 2 gig partition, although you can make several of those. What operating system is running and did you format the drive? I don't recall there being any kind of BIOS limitation on those.

What kind of modem is it? Are you sure you have the right drivers? If you download and run Everest you can find out all sorts of details about the components. In your case hard drive and modem could be helpful.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.htmlYes I had it partitioned wrong. In FAT 16. So cleaned and reformatted. Now shows 10 GB.
Thank-You!
The GX100 Modem is an Encore V.92 /90 56,000bps Fax Modem and I have the installation disk that came with the package contents.
OS is 98, until I get a 2000 disk.
Someone told me that 98 won't detect it.
Is that true ?
I downloaded the Everest diagonostic program and will use it on the GXi and the GX100 when I have OS 98 loaded.
I'll come back tomorrow with information.Did the install program work? The question would be if there are WIn98 drivers for it. Does it show at all in Device Manager after the install? Are there any exclamation marks by it?

If that is an old Dell with 2 serial ports (look on the back for 9 pin ports) make sure they are not disabled in the BIOS.

That is a PCI WinModem, so it may tax the processor severely. Is that a 700 Mhz Celeron in there? The computer with the modem is all set up except the modem. And it doesn't even show in the Device Manager screen. There are yellow ! in the PCI CARD, PCI
Communication Device & Network Adapter. And there are 2 of each!
5:00 AM gotta go to work be back later with more info.Delete them both in device manager and reboot. What happens now?Thank you so much for the info on the Everest. It is great!!!!!!!!!

OKay I did that, They came back with yellow !'s but not there is one of each.
Ok, have decided to go wireless now.
But I need my Ethernet Controller to work. I'm just going to forget the modem for now.
Embarq has sold me a great deal for wireless internet.

Ethernet Controller is ...3Com 3C920 Intergrated Fast Ethernet Controller

Got the GXi finally completed. But I have to take the memory sticks out and reseat them, It seems that the computer is only recognizing 1/2 of what is in.Is your NIC working properly? Any drivers for any Dell system ever made for any OS are available on their web site.

I believe those models take EDO DIMMS, and there are 4 slots. I didn't open mine to check, but that sounds right. Hard to find those now, except for eBay etc. Remove and reseat and then when you restart see what is shown in the BIOS. I will break mine out this evening if you need further info.

Solve : mb not recognizing processor at right speed?

i have a ASUS P4SGX-MX MATX and a pentium 3.0 gig chip. The MB is seeing it as an 1800 mhz chip. Any ideas?1) is it connected properly?
2) did it ever work?
3) what's different?
4) details, please?never had it working beforeQuote

1) is it connected properly?
4) details, please?

these are still unanswered. yes it can only be connected one way right ?. Im installing xp on it now. Im going to see what windows sees it aswindows sees it as 3 gig but its opperating as 1.8. i think its the biosThat is a socket 478 board. What processor do you have that is expected to run at 3 GHZ. Is it possible you got the wrong CPU?we'll....... it says right on the chip that its a 3.02 gig p4 The ASUS site was down last time I tried to check on that board, but that would be the next LOGICAL place to examine for info. I would check to see if ALL 478 processors are accepted by that board.

It may be that a BIOS upgrade is required to see the correct chip, but check to see if a BIOS update specifically addresses that issue. Many doorstops have been made from motherboards with incorrect BIOS flashing. well i looked at the bios version and the mb has the most current NON beta version. The only chip it does not support is the northwood a. Im really confused why this is happeningIf it is recognized in Windows correctly and games, etc. seem to run FAST enough, I would just chalk it up to "one of those things".

You can run Belarc Advisor and Everest and see what they report.

Hi

Ok this is the situation i have. I installed a new graphics card driver and while it allowed one game to run ok, it totally blacked out the other game. So on ANOTHER FORUM this guy told me to do this (plz read below) but im not sure how to do it. If you can tell me STEP by step i would appreciate it so much, *censored* i may even kiss your toes, its doing my head in that much. When i boot my comp up it does say that its disabled an SLI, but i dont ever remember enabling it as i dont know much about it.

1-make sure u have sli mode disabled if u r not using it.
2-and then go to advanced 3d settings and choose ur global settings and change hardware acceleretion to single display performance mode.

Which game is being blacked out? And can we have a hint at the specs of your computer, please? :SFifa 06 blacks out. Specs are, MSI Diamond motherboard, Geforce 7800 graphics card, 2 gig Ram. You need anymore info??Yes, a lot more. For starts, is that an SLI graphics card? Did that game ever work right on that computer? If so, what has changed?Quote

Yes, a lot more. For starts, is that an SLI graphics card? Did that game ever work right on that computer? If so, what has changed?

Ok when you say alot more, what else do you need other then what you have wrote above, its just then i can tell you it all in one go. If you only need the info above then here goes. I cannot say if its an SLI graphics card whats the difference?? all i know is that its a Geforce 7800 i didnt know you could get an SLI one. Yes the game did work but with out dated drivers. This is what the guy recommend as a fix from old to the new drivers. The change is i updated the driver and now fifa dont work.

Ok just figured this out myself.

2-and then go to advanced 3d settings and choose ur global settings and change hardware acceleretion to single display performance mode.

But how do i disable SLI

ThanksSolved the other problem myself now aswell, but thanks for trying and any input.kkPlease post the answer. Inquiring minds want to know.

This is embarassing. My PC has been disassembled, moved, re-assembled so many times the connecters are worn. Now, I can't seem to get sound to work!
Running W2K, SP4 on older x86. Sound card is Aureal 8830, speakers are Altec Lansing (Main is labeled AT6, slave is labeled ACS40).

Have tried several combinations of connections. Internal diagnostics indicate card is installed and OK.

Back side of main spkr has a power switch and five ports (DC Power, SPKR, SUB,A,B). Card has at least three color-coded ports for plugs.

They used to work. Is there an audio or .wav file I can test with? You'll probably find some under C:\Windows\Media. Or just search for "*.wav" on your hard drive. Can you offer any assistance with connections?Make sure you CONNECT the speaker to the correct PORT on the sound card. Usually sound cards have colored ports with symbols indicating which is for your speakers and which is for your microphone, and so on. One example:

DocSome other things to try:

 • Make sure volume is not muted: Click Start > Control Panel. In Control Panel, select the Switch to Classic View (in Windows XP) and select the Sounds and Audio Devices applet. Clear the Mute check box, and select OK.
 • Reinstall the drivers for the sound card: Right-click My Computer and select Properties. In System Properties, select the Hardware tab and select the Device Manager button. In Device Manager, double-click Sound, video and game controllers, and double-click your sound card. Select the Driver tab and select the Uninstall button, and click Yes to the message. Restart your computer and Windows will detect the sound card and reinstall the driver.

Let us know how it goes,
DocThanks loads. For your illustration, I assume green is the color I would use to connect to my speakers? I like the idea of deinstall and let W2K rediscover on boot. I've had some strange things happen to this pc since I moved it from home and my cable modem to my cottage and a DSL modem........After I get these speakers/sound working, I'm going to try posting that thread....ONE THING AT A TIME!!!!!Quote
Thanks loads. For your illustration, I assume green is the color I would use to connect to my speakers? ...

Nope, DAVE. Green is the color for headphones. Black is for speakers, and orange and silver are for additional specialized speakers (to give you surround sound and the like) if you have them.

Hope it works out for you, and let us know if you need more info.

Blessings to you,
Doc
Doc , I'm not sure if your 100% there , on all the systems Ive had So far , its always been Green for Front left and Right, even on 2 channel Sound cards, on the Last 3 Surround sound cards its Been, Green Front Left and Right , Black Centre and Bass, Orange For Rear left and right, Pink for Mic, and Blue For line in

and i had 5.1 Sound Blaster
Then a 7.1 AC97
Then a 7.1 AC97 High Def.

Edit : i just noticed , on that Pic you posted , Black is for Surround Left & Right, that's not Regular Left and right. Green is normal Left Right, Even tho it says Front.Quote

I recently bought a refurbished Dell with Windows 2000 Professional and an AC'97 sound card. At first everything worked normally, then suddenly all the sounds became an octave higher than they should be. I'm not sure if it's an issue with the sound card itself or if the processor is RUNNING too fast, but if anyone can GIVE me some advice on how to fix this problem (or at least figure out what's causing it) I'd appreciate it.How about some specifics of the machine and what happened prior to this? See below.I'm using a Dell with Windows 2000 Professional, 10GB hard drive, Uniplex Half-Duplex Audio Device, Intel(R) 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller...let me know what other info you need. It worked fine at first, the only thing I remember installing before it started acting up is AOL. I TRIED uninstalling that but it didn't help. Other than that I'm stumped as to what I can do.What is the model number or Service Tag? Have you PLAYED with any drivers recently? Any known hardware or other issues?Where is the model number located? I haven't done anything to any of the drivers, and haven't had issues with any other hardware.Just get the service tag. Solve : One-Way Trouble on LAN?

Answer»

I am attempting to connect 2 computers. For simplicity call them A and B. A is running Win2000, and B Win98SE. Both have Ethernet adapter cards, and are CONNECTED with an Ethernet cable.

Computer A sees B perfectly. It recognizes it, lists it as part of the network, and since I've installed File Sharing, and mapped the hard drives, I can do what I want with the files on B from A.

The reverse is not true. Computer B shows that it recognizes the existence of A, but when I try to connect I am told that I need a password to make the connection. I have no idea where to go to find the password. I never intentionally established one for either computer.

How Can I either find the password requested, or eliminate the need for one?

So far as I know it is a standard cable. How would I know the difference?

And why does it work in one direction, and not in the other?

And where did the request for a password come from?

Win 98SE NETWORKING is less secure than 2000. To access files on that machine you have to have the file set as shared and PROVIDE a password to access the secure machine. (Try Administrator and whatever the Admin password is.)

You may already have a crossover cable. I can't see it from here.

This is the basics. Perhaps this is all you need. If not you can try googling for more info on simple home networks.

Well, that made a little progress. The computer now recognizes that there is another computer connected. It even knows that computer's name. It will not, however, allow me to access any of the drives on that computer. For each of the drives it recognizes it says that the network name cannot be found.

At least it's not asking me for a non-existent password anymore.

I plugged a Logitech USB Optical Mouse into my SONY VAIO, unplugged it and now the laptop touchpad & buttons have stopped working! Tried recovery disc's to restore defaults with no success.Look in the BIOS and see if there is a touchpad configuration feature that got disabled.

Alan <>< Thanks. Looked in BIOS and could not see any options for the touch pad. The touch pad should come up in device manager. There is a FOLDER on C drive called pointing device with the ALPS drivers which would be the drivers, but the touch pad is not in device manager.Touchpad will usually be under mouse or pointing devices, rather than listed as a touchpad.Go to Add Remove HARDWARE and remove the mouse...re-boot and your touchpad will return.

Unfortunately you can't have both on a lot of laptops.

I have limited experience with laptops but I'm surprised to hear that. I ASSUMED they all would recognize both touchpad and mouse at the same time. That just makes sense; surely, connecting a mouse to a laptop is a common practice.

Solve : Computer tower running all the time?!?

Answer»

My mom's COMPUTER tower is loading all the time, it makes like a running/loading noise constantly. And usually when this starts to 'load' or 'run' it makes the computer SCREEN freeze and sometimes I will have to push ctrl. alt. delete to get out of the computer screen or the internet web page I have up. I try to go to control panel and free up space on the hardrive but it sits for like half and hour and it doesn't even clean anything up. Just wondering what the problem is?
Maybe if you posted all the specs on the computer, operating system, major software, etc. we could advise you. It's an hp pavilion mx704, that's what it says on the monitor. On the tower it says: 520 Intel Pentium PROCESSOR w/hyper threading technology. 512 MB, 160 GB. She has Window's XP. That's pretty much all I can tell you, I don't know much about computers.Does it do it when you are NOT connected to the internet, try unplugging connection. Is this loading noise accompanied with the harddrive light? It could be a noisy fan.Yes it continues to load/run when I'm not connected or when the computer is just sitting, and there is nobody on it. The harddrive light is not on when it does this, is the harddrive light in the front of the computer? If so, it's not on. Just the power BUTTON which is on the front and is always lit up blue, that's the button for on and off.Can you describe what you mean by 'load/run'?If the harddrive light is not on, it is POSSIBLY a noise fan. You should have a light near the powerlight for your harddrive. Watch it when you start your computer, if it flashes on and off when you load windows or a program, but stops when your computer is idle, that'll be your harddrive light. They are usually red, or orange. Some CDRoms will run constantly as well... i suggest removing a side panel and investigating the sound further...

Solve : soundcard config.?

Answer»

Hi all,
I'm in the process of reformatting my machine, though now that i have reinstalled windows xp my soundcard inputs seem to be playing up. the line out doesn't appear to work and the speakers will only work when plugged into the MICROPHONE socket, i'm a little baffled, and i don't know how to get to the soundcard configuration to configure the inputs properly. I'm using an onboard Realtek Ac97, with the appropriate drivers.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanx. NickladAnd you ar epositive you have the correct drivers? WHat make/model of motherboard is this?

Try deleting all the references to sound in Device Manager and reboot. What HAPPENS?hiya, done that, but still the same, I'm a bit confused really.
Is there any WAY to get to a soundcard configuration MENU, where you might be able to change the configuration of the input SOCKETS?
I've tried entering the setup area on a restart but there's no options to configure the inputs, any ideas?
Cheers, NickladWhat do you see in Multimedia settings in control panel? Any help there?Quote

... the speakers will only work when plugged into the microphone socket, ...
That makes no sense whatsoever. Mic is input, speaker is output. I think you need to take a very close look at your connectors and how they are labeled. Are you ABSOLUTELY sure you have your speakers connected to the right connector?

Without a soldering iron this is not possible even then the results would not be satisfactory.

Sigh

How about the model number? There is a 7 digit code on the bottom of the machine that is also helpful. What operating system? What service pack? Are all updates applied? Was this a new machine or bought USED? Do you have a real Windows CD or what did you get with it? What sound chip is identified in Device Manager?

These are the important details.

Solve : question regarding FSB?

Answer»

I a processor chip is a 800 fsb and a mb has a max of 533 fsb will the processor underclock?Better visit the motherboard manufacturer's website or find other documentation on exactly what PROCESSORS that motherboard will support.i did and the processor i have is supposedly supported, but......

I have a P4 Northwood 2.8 and the bios automatically ses it as a 1.866 ( 14x133) I can set it 166/33 and get 2.2 out of it but STILL the processor should be 2.8. Its a P4SGX-MX ASUS. Windows correctly sees it as a 2.8 running low, either a 1.8 or a 2.2 depending on what i have it set at ( funny thing is that 14x166 is 2324 and not a rounded 2.2 ) What the heck is GOING on here? I have the most recent BIOS. I was wondering if the FSB could be a factor here.I honestly don't know. I gather 166/33 is the highest setting in the BIOS. Is that right? And, you have no control over that multiplier. Is that right? yes, thats right. im completely STUMPED :-?

Sorry it took me so long to GET back to everyone, but I had to reinstall my Norton Internet Security and I didn't want to go online until I did. I was able to reformat my D drive by doing it in Safe Mode. I didn't KNOW you could do that. I don't know what caused the PROBLEM, but things are okay now. I only have Windows on my C drive now, but I guess that's okay too. Solve : Soundcard issue?

Answer»

k so i have a soundcard with 3 ports on it. one is speakers , another microphone , but ive no clue what the third is . what im hopeing to do is get sound comming through both my speakers and an earpiece at the same time , but im not sure if/how thats POSSIBLE.

these are the ports , the blue one is the one im not sure of http://i109.photobucket.com/albums/n60/toometalforthedevil/BLAH.jpg

any help on this would be much appreciatedIt could be a headphone jack...as far as i KNOW SOUNDCARDS will run either speakers or headphones but not both at once...

patio. 8-)Do you have a need for that other port or you are just curious? If you could post the model number of the sound card perhaps we could advise. On my sound card, the light blue port is Line-in. The color scheme is fairly standard, so I think you can assume that port is Line-in.

Line-in can used to connect an audio source to computer so that can record from that input source. I've recently used it to convert some music tapes to digital FORMAT. I connect a sound cord to the phones jack on my tape player, and the other end to the Line-in port on my sound card.

Some speakers have a headphone output jack. So, that's one option, although it requires a purchase. Does you computer have a headphone output jack on front? Mine does but the wiring for it is not connected to ANYTHING. I believe the motherboard has connectors for that front headphone jack but I'm not using onboard sound, and I don't know whether that wiring can be connected to the sound card; I rather doubt it.Quote

Solve : Computer parts frying...?

Answer»

Following up on the HDD forum. What would a software have to do to make a piece of hardware cause sparks and explode into flame?

Many viruses already are capable of destroying parts. ROB already mentioned "thrashing." I believe a SIMILAR method can be done with memory cards as well.

But like in movies when computer literally explode and start steaming....that's got to be a movie technique.

The only explanation i can THINK of is...having an oxygen tank in the computer.....CODES open it and release gas, then have the computer work at extremely high rates overheating, the heat will ignite a piece of paper resting on the CPU. The computer will catch flame and start destroying internal wires and parts CAUSING a blazing sparking reaction.

That's my guess, but besides codes that just overload parts, i have never seen a computer work so crazily. What was the point of this post? :-? good question.PPP

Solve : Video artifacting?

Answer»

Hey guys... I just built my new compy which consists of ASUS M2N32-SLI DELUXE, 2g Corsair XMS DDR2 6400, 650W PSU, BFG 7900GTX, and Creative X-Fi platinum

After about 10 minutes of playing any Gfx intensive games the textures start to artifact... They develop little color splotches here an there. Not long after that the things multiply until eventually my compy locks up. Rebooting fixes the issue. I am running Windows XP Home w/ SP2 and anti-virus and anti-spyware installed. Most common causes:

video card not seated correctly
heat
need for updated drivers
bad card
inadequate or defective power supply

Since you mentioned it starts with graphics intensive games, I would say heat or bad power supply. Even though new what is the name on the PSU? Some don't have enough power on the 12V rail, and many "el cheapos" can cause problems. I am assuming this is PCI-E, and you have no attempted to overclock anything?

Look in the graphics card tools/options and there should be a heat detector. Play a game for a bit, quit and quickly check the heat.Power supply is good, I have checked the voltages, It is a BFG 650... heat is not an issue as it only hits about 60C under load... It only happens in FEAR and Prey I have FOUND... With a little bit in DOD:S only in DOD it is just a color splotch of texture not true artifacting... So Im going to assume its a problem with the games vs hardware. If it GETS any worse Ill just RMA the card to BFG and they'll give me a new one lol

Solve : Which is better??

Answer»

Which video card LINE is better? Nvidia or ATI?That's like SAYING who makes a better PIZZA, this shop or that shop. Sometimes one, sometimes the other. The two companies constantly compete to have the fastest graphics cards. Sometimes one is in the lead, sometimes another is. What models were you thinking about in particular? There are plenty of benchmarks to compare them online.Next time please make your title more descriptive... As Neil said they do compete. One month one will be ahead of the other...maybe in a lesser PERIOD of time actually. I have an x800 Radeon 256MB card and it hasnt given me an problems. My card is equivalent to the Geforce 7800. A better way to look at is make sure whatever you purchase is either one of the two brands And in this day and age get nothing less than a 256mb card. Hope that helps.

Solve : Sound from 'puter head jack only, CD-RW jack dead?

Answer»

Just wanting to understand....
Compaq Presario 5310 running Windows XP Pro. I have a Memorex external DVD player PLUGGED in to a USB port and ALSO an internal CD-RW without the analog audio wired to the motherboard. Both devices will play using either Real Player or Windows Media player, but will only run sound to the headphone jack on the back of the computer. The headphone jack on each device would be a much more convienient point of access for my headphones.
INTEL 82801BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller is running the multimedia output.
I could run down to RADIO Shack or anywhere and buy a 6 foot extension to pipe the audio from the back of the computer, but that is admitting defeat. Guess I'm half stubborn and half wanting to learn.
What do I need to modify to get the headphone jack delivering audio output on the external DVD player or the internal CD-RW?

Thanks to the experts for sharing what they've learned.

What happens if you plug into the jacks on the drives? Does it mute the sound through the speakers? How is sound/sound card configured in Control Panel? With my headphones plugged into the drives the audio is still coming to the jack on the back of the computer, as verified with a second set of headphones singing away from the back of the computer while the first pair is dead at the CD jack.

Which tab in Control Panel specifically would I be checking to answer the config question? Sounds and Multimedia/Audio and also on the Hardware Tab?Audio tab of Sound and Audio Device Properties shows that Intel Integrated Audio is running the show.

Under Sound and Audio Hardware tab I have the Intel 82801 BA as mentioned before and three other CODECs listed

Audio Codecs,
Legacy Audio Drivers and
Media Control Devices
all list Manufacturer (Standard System Device) and Location Unknown. As a check I disabled the Intel driver and then neither Real Player or Windows Media Player would operate. With Intel 82801 enabled I have audio output from the back of the computer.

Stupid suggestion, but i've overlooked more obvious things in my worst moments:

Have you adjusted the volume on the external devices? Many of them have a button or dial of some type for this purpose.

DocI've done everything I can think of at the CD-RW, including the volume dial. I read on another post that the audio cable has to run from the soundcard to the drive so I check that too, and it's fine. That didn't really make much sense though considering that the external drive doesn't have such a cable, just the USB. I wonder if this is something handled by the player software so only really old versions of WinPlayer will even let the audio come out someplace other than the computer headphone jack. Are you trying to play a music CD that you burned or one you purchased?

Purchased. The CD-RW functions properly on my backup machine. On my backup the audio comes out of the computer speaker AND the CD-RW headphone jack simultaneously. Muting the speaker via the volume control on the screen does not affect the drive volume. Only the dial on the drive changes that. On my backup, things work as I expect they would.
It appears that the Presario motherboard is directing audio to the rear jack from the digital info coming in to the motherboard from the ribbon cable. What interrupt, SETTING, etc. would enable the motherboard to tell both an internal and external drive to disable the headphone jack of the drive?

Quote

I'd guess it is a software driver issue, not a hardware issue. Check the name of the software driver in Device Manager in the backup computer and compare it to the name of the driver in device manager in the system that is experiencing the problem. If the operating systems on both systems are the same, the drivers should be the same. If they are the same, click the button to reinstall the driver, just in case it is corrupted.

Solve : problems installing video andsound cards at same t?

hey there I am having problems INSTALLING both my sound and video card it seems that i can have one WITHOUT the other but when i put them both in it practicly disables my video card, and when i go to change the settings manually it wont let me. I have a hp pavillion 6553 computer running windows 98 and an intel celeron-A, 466MHz (7 x67) with phoenix bios the video card is an S3 ViRGE/DX/GX(86c375/86c385) and the sond card is a creative ensonique with a sony monitor. any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. I only have one configuration and it is basic configuration 0000

thanx,
peteWhat type of video card, AGP or PCI? Have you installed only the video card and gotten a good display? Does your motherboard also have onboard/integrated video? When you bought the computer, was it using onboard video or a card? Have you used this combination of sound card and video card in the past in this computer? If so, what has changed? Are these both HP original ITEMS? Are the drivers being used from the HP web site or elsewhere? Specifics on this issue ould solve the problem. What WIndows 98 material do you have - real Win98 disc, or a restore CD or what?they are both pci cards. Yes it does have integrated video but it is disabled in the hardware profiles. i installed the video card only for the time being and it gives me a good display but when i install the sond card it automaticly shows a conflict in the input/output range with motherboard recources and the extension for pnp bios. No the are not original to the computer they are both aftermarket. the disc i have is the win 98 second edition full install disc not just the upgrade disk. The drivers are from windows and microsoft update. If you need any more let me know.

thanxs,
peter

Windows update is the WOST place to get drivers. If you can IDENTIFY the hardware, since they are aftermarket, then you can get the drivers.

Everst Home can help with the first part of that.

Solve : CRASHED -(HDD or BIOS?)?

Answer»

well i m not too sure bout the specification:

its pentium celeron 1.45GHz
motherboard (some brand) with award bios
ram 256 MB SD RAM
win98 & xp pro installed in a single partition

whatever, it was running pretty well until today. i MADE some experimental changes in the bios.

In the ADVANCED CHIPSET FEATURES:
changed the CAS Latency Time 3 to 2
Cycle time Trans/trc 7/9 to 5/7
RAS-toCAS Delay 3 to 2
RAS Precharged Time 3 to 2
Delayed transaction Enabled to Disabled
System BIOS cache Disabled to Enabled etc. etc.

In the Frequency/Voltage Control:
changed the CPU CLOCK ratio
changed the CPU clock something (was in MHz)

whatever! After the change was made, I found a much interesting problem.
Oh man when i was prompted to boot either of the windows: when i SELECTED xp..... it SHOWED some kind of a message written: you need to repair your windows coz your system files are damaged.
Cool! then I restarted the pc & tried to switch to windows 98. But it appeared "Windows protection error".
Then I restarted it again with reset button then i was prompted to choose from a menu. I selected SAFE MODE. But it hanged after a while. I tried again and again neither the windows booted in the normal mode nor in safe mode. However, I tried to undo all the changes I made in the bios. But, it did not solve the problem. Then i tried to reinstall the win 98. but in the scandisk it showed thousands of errors. I got frustated with those, and formatted that partition. I then tried to launch the win98 setup minimum 20 times but pc hanged either in the preparing for copying, or disk space calculation, or in the file copying section. I tried to quick format again and again before every time I attempted to setup but didnt result any good. After some attempt some SWUB error message began to be displayed. I tried to setup WIN XP then, first time hanged when "windows setup is starting", next time the error message was displayed:
"if you are receiving the error message 4 da 1st time then restart the setup, if again then try to update your setup, if the problem PERSISTS then try to remove any software or hardware you have added recently, make sure that you have your memory cache switched off. check your memory settings! I have undid all the changes but the setup kept on hanging.

Please help me, I have never encountered such problem!

It seems to me that you fiddled with some settings in the BIOS that were not meant to be fiddled with, and you have possibly caused permanent damage to one or more of your computer components. In which case the only solution is to replace that component.

In the BIOS, look for a restore failsafe defaults of some kind.

And why exactly were you changing them?Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Just like voting!

Solve : BIOS Setup Key Causing Computer To Freeze?

Answer»

Hey guys, wanted to know if you could give me a hand with a BIOS problem I just discovered. I am running a "Ranger" from ViciousPC, identical to the one here except that I'm using a GeForce 6800 video card, http://www.viciouspc.com/product/config_ranger.html . I have video skipping in movies in some games, so I need to turn fastwrites_ON, (which requires editing the BIOS, of course.) Normally accessing the BIOS is a simple process- press the indicated key at startup, or find out what key to press online.

When I press the key indicated, it goes to an all black screen with my "cursor" in the upper left hand corner, and nothing else happens. Apparently no typing or other actions are registered, (the cursor blinks but does not move,) and I have to restart the computer manually. I had tried doing this 8 or so times, and everytime it freezes up. I have no clue what could prevent me from being able to edit my Bios, so I could use your input.

My Specs: (Other info. available at the link above.)
Motherboard Model: NF-CK804
Motherboard Chipset: nVidia nForce4
Motherboard Slots: 5xPCI
BIOS Manufacturer: Phoenix- Award WorkstationBIOS
BIOS Date: 7/20/05 (checked the website, apparently they don't offer any updates, you have to contact the motherboard manufacturer)

All of my drivers are up to date.

I have a basic knowledge of what BIOS is, but not enought o troubleshoot it or FIGURE this problem out. I can follow any instructions that you give provided there isn't any previous BIOS knowledge inolved. Thanks a lot for your thoughts and comments, hopefully you can help me solve this problem.

-JaeganJaegan:

Assuming you are still able to boot the computer normally when you do not try to enter the BIOS setup, i have two guesses:

A. There is a JUMPER on the motherboard that must be changed before you can enter the BIOS setup (most modern systems simply give you the option of entering a password to keep trouble makers from entering the BIOS setup, but some still have the jumper).

B. The data on your BIOS chip is corrupted. In this case, flashing the BIOS or even replacing the chip might be required to fix the problem.

DocThanks for the quick response. If i can get a LITTLE more information from you...

How does one flash the BIOS on a chip?

Is there anyway to access the BIOS setup from within WINDOWS?

Thanks again Doc,
JaeganQuote

...How does one flash the BIOS on a chip?

Is there anyway to access the BIOS setup from within Windows? ...

A BIOS flash is usually on a floppy disk, a burned CD, or a removable drive. When you start the computer with the floppy disk in the floppy drive, the CD in the optical drive, or the removable drive in the USB port, the BIOS installs the software to the BIOS chip.

There is no way to enter the BIOS setup from within Windows.

DocAnd you need to be VERY carefully when flashing the BIOS as many a good motherboard has been turned into a doorstop if the computer powers down during the procedure, wrong flash file is used, etc. during the procedure.

It sounds like you have never done this before so be careful. Thanks for the heads up. Sounds like BIOS errors are less forgiving and more destructive than I guessed.

Luckilly, I discovered by computer is covered by esupport. Stumbled upon it as I was looking for stuff on flash bios, and basically they have a program that runs a diagnostic on your rig, determines your BIOS, and within 24 hours you get an e-mail telling you exactly what BIOS to use (and, in all hope, how to use it, eh.) I'll make SURE to cross all my t's and dot all my i's on this one.

Thanks again for all the help guys. Really wish I would have found this site ages ago- you guys are a lot more helpful than the Tomshardware forum guys.

Solve : system seems slower after installing 2nd HDD?

i installed an ole quantum fireball AS40.0 7200rpm 2mb BUFFER, 40 gig. my system seems to have slowed down quite a bit, could the 2mb buffer be limiting the 8mb buffer of my PRIMARY drive? primary is a seagate barricuda ST180013A 80gig, 7200 rpm, 8mb buffer. No but there could be other problems - not jumpered correctly (is it running OK?), inadequate power supply, hard drive problems, etc. Have you run some diagnostics on it from the Maxtor site? (They bought quantum some time ago. I think it was 2000. That may be ONE of the last drives made under that name.)

The AS40 had an ATA-100 RATE LIKE your Seagate has. There was some software to control this. Check on the Maxtor site or do a google search.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102410

it has a core clock of 400mhz, most only have a 250mhz CC, my 64 bit that i have now has a CC of 230. it will cost about 65 bucks with S&H but i intend to get it for my B-day august 30 (i will probably get it as an early gift at the start of august) but i am not sure if i can get a better one new for cheaper, and i do not feel like looking on ebay, most of there stuff isnt new, and it doesnt have everything sometimes. so is this the best card i can get for the price? or what? i intend to do some seriso gaming with this card, the card i currently have sucks so badly i cant even play counterstrike: source on lowest settings -.-What about specifics on the rest of your working system?I don't mean to burst your bubble, but you will not get any SERIOUS (if that's what seriso is supposed to be) gaming out of a 9600PRO 256MB card, unless you are playing old games.

Believe me, you will get MUCH better performance out of a faster 128mb card, than spending money on a 256 that is slow.yes neil is correct! cuz rite now i have the ati 9600 pro 256mb card and im still runnin bf2 on medium/low settingsIf i may make a RECOMENDATION, As long as your not planning on OVERCLOCKING, the ATI X1600 pro seems to be the best bang for your buck for a budget gamer. With a core clock at 500 MHz and a 512 Mb GDDR2 memory clocked at 780 MHz, I am able to run all of my games at nearly full settings including Half life 2 and battlefield 2, once again as long as your not planning on OC, if you do plan on OC with a budget card, or you just prefer Geforce, go with the 7300GT, Although these aren't nearly the best cards out there, for someone on a budget, say, a poor college kid like myself, these cards will offer you a pleasent expereince for not nearly the price of the top end cards. I hope i helped

Doomsayer512MB? I have x1600XT the next model up, and only 256.

Take a look at this review of a 512 graphics card compared to its 256 varient. It's not the same model, but the princibles still apply.

http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/799/gecube_x800xl_512mb_graphics_card_256mb_vs_512mb/index.html

The 512mb version of the card cost $100 more, yet only offers a few more frames per second. With that money you could get the next model up, but still with 256, which would offer several more frames per second.

MYTH BUSTER: DOUBLE RAM DOES *NOT* EQUAL DOUBLE SPEED

And besides, the graphics card dead reckon was looking at cost about $50, so the card you suggested is difinately out of his price range. My XT cost about £110.

Dead reckon, try looking at this card:

It's a 9600XT 128MB. But it costs a few more dollars than the one you picked out yourself.Hello, Deck Reckon? You asked for our advice... you could at least say you've read it.

13500.

Solve : Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boo?

Answer»

Hey, I actually am getting this message too. I just put together a computer for my DAD and BOOTED it up, got the "reboot and select proper boot device..." so I put in the winxp cd, pressed a key, and it restated the message. So I restarted with the cd in the drive, and it still wouldnt boot from it. I have 2 cd-rom drives installed (older ones from my dads previous computer), and in the Bios, it reads both of them as being connected, as well as the hdd. I changed the boot order from Floppy, Primary CD-Rom, HDD to Primary CD-Rom, Floppy, HDD. That didnt work either. Im thinking the cd rom drives may be busted, SINCE they quit working on the old computer too. So I guess i'll switch out a known working drive and see if that works. Does that sound like a good plan of action?

System Specs:
4x4x32 cd-rw
8x4x32 cd-rw
Floppy drive
asus k8n mobo (brand new)
nvidia 5200 256mb (brand new)
256 ddr2 ram (brand new)
160gb wd hdd (brand new, no previous OS)

I dont know if I should post this on this post, or start one of my own... we do share the same problem though, but it SEEMS like for different reasons.

Thanks!Yes, a new post is always preferable to hijacking someone else's. Even though the problems may seem similar, they and the solutions could be completely different. It decreases CONFUSION for everyone, especially the original poster of this thread.
