Solve : Laptop freezes when idle?

Answer»

Hello,
My laptop completely freezes after sitting idle for even a few minutes. Sometimes the cursor moves, but nothing is clickable. And sometimes the mouse won't move at all. This has been happening for a couple months, and I've searched for some HELP on-line, but nothing has helped. As PREVIOUSLY suggested, I have adjusted computer setting to never go to sleep.

Here's some info on the computer:
hp pavilion dv6500 series
Microsoft Vista
2GB RAM
Runs Adaware and SpyBot periodically

Please let me know if any other information would be helpful. Thanks in advance for any advice!HI,
It is most likely due, to one of the APPLICATIONS that are running in the background is not responding, causing your whole PC to freeze.
The best thing, is run to run Windows Task Manger - Ctrl-ALt-Delete and click "End Task" on the application that is not responding.
If this program keeps freezing up all the time, you many want to consider uninstalling and reinstalling the application.
I also RECOMMEND you check for updates for this unresponsive program.

Regards
SteveOpen Task Manager to the Processes Tab. Double-Click on "cpu" at the top of the cpu column to sort with highest usage at the top. Next time the system freezes, note which process is hogging the cycles.

Solve : graphics card overheating at 52 degrees C????

Answer»

Problem:
My evga gtx 260 card has overheating symptoms at 52 degrees celcius. this has only started recently and my computer keeps crashing and displaying static and grabled images before the computer CRASHES. crashes mostly occur during gameplay and video viewing. i have had the computer crash when the card was at 41 degrees a couple of times. it got to a point where i couldnt even start windows and had to use safe mode to use my computer. however sometimes the computer will work with no problems.

Things i've tried: uninstalling and reinstalling latest nvidia driver, uninstalling needless programs, blasting the dust out of the computer, removing and reinserting card and connections, i have the fan run at 100% now, which seems to help. only thing i have not tried is putting my card into another computer. i will try this soon though, to see if the problem still happens. I've contacted EVGA they said to process an RMA after isolating the problem to the card.

Think maybe the thermal paste on the card is bad?

any ideas will be helpful, thanksQuote

Minimum of a 500 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 36 Amps.)

Does your power supply meet the recommended SPECS.?

Even if it does, it may be FAILING... Instead of trying your card in another system, take the psu out of that other system (if it meets the recommended specs) and try it in your current system... It would be a more accurate test because your current system has different power needs..

Your card temps. seem ok..

i have a 750watt silver stone power supply. supposed to have support for 2 sli cards like mine. This graphics card has been working fine playing all games i have with no problems. MW2, CnC3, CnC4 beta and many others all worked just fine until a few days ago. i will have to try a power supply swap as well. i just updated my computers specs so that the right power supply and card are shown.52C is typically not overheating temperature for a modern video card, as long as that's load and not idle.

Even some games running at the highest playable settings your system can muster (i.e.: Crysis) can jack that temperature up to 65-70C.

Given your power supply specs (more than enough), it sounds to me like the problem is the card itself...The psu being in spec. does not guarantee its proper function..well when i get the chance i will swap out both 1 at a time to rule them out, i have a friend that already uses similar parts in his computer so they should be easily swappable. i'll post the results here once its been done.
Okay, i have just put the graphics card into my friends computer. went to play a game to test it out and my friends computer got the same problems i got when the card was in my computer. The system froze up and crashed at the skirmish setup menu in CnC3: kanes wrath before the 1st round even started. so im PRETTY sure the graphics card is to blame now. it still confuses me how the problem can occur so randomly. like i got home from work and the computer would crash just as windows was loggin me on. so i'll be getting ahold of evga to try to do an RMA. however if anyone has further actions i can take, let me know.here is a report generated by vista if its any help

Solve : Computer won't boot to an operating system?

Answer»

So I randomly turn my computer on today, and at first the fans were just running at max speed and wouldn't boot or slow down. So then I unplugged one of my 2 harddrives, also the one that has 64bit debian on it. After I did that it started to boot up as it normally would, except it came to a screen that said "GRUB loading... No disk found." with a grub promt after that. I unplugged the drive with debian on it again and tried to boot to my windows boot, and still the same thing to me. So then I PUT a ubuntu live CD into my computer to see if I could get into the windows hdd at all. When I tried that, I got a mount ERROR. If i tried to install ubuntu onto the debian drive (since debian isn't booting either) it wont boot either

I tried rolling back windows with my windows installation CD, to no result. I really don't want to wipe my drive, and dont even know if itd work. I don't even know where to start.

Also I posted it in this forum because at this point I figure its a hardware problem. Just if i need to replace something I'd like to know whichQuote from: halfdemon1122 on February 25, 2010, 02:12:26 AM

1. Which Windows operating system?

2. Maybe you could use the Windows installation CD to troubleshoot and/or fix the problem.

1. Its windows vista

2. The cd is at service pack 1, the hdd is at service pack 2, and its a retail upgradeYou had a dual-boot setup and removed 1 of the drive/partitions...this is why it won't boot.

See Here...

Or Here

A full version Vista DVD would be preferable....if you can borrow 1.
I doubt this works with an upgrade DVD but don't quote me on that as i have never tested it myself...Quote
This will not work if you have SP1 and SP2 installed unless your Vista installation DVD includes SP2.

EDIT: Also when I tried to install ubuntu and hit install (after choosingthe right options) it just didn't do anything. Nothing at all.

More info on exactly how this is setup including a description of the physical drives an partitions and where the OS's are at...
Windows vista is on a 320gb SATA drive, and debian is on an 40GB IDE drive. what else do you need? I dont know the motherboard offhand but I can get you the information if you needit

BIOS also sees both of the harddrivesGotcha...
This is fixable depending on what your goals are...
The Vista install can be rescued as is...not so SURE about the Debian...
Let us know...I dont care one bit about the debian. The problem I seem to be having is that GRUB is loaded onto both harddrives, and when the debian drive is out then windows still tries to boot to GRUB. Removing GRUB from the windows might work, but I have no idea

EDIT: Fixed the problem with this: http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/96509133/m/254009228831GRUB will always load no matter what drive setup you have once it's installed...period.
It's one of it's fatal flaws.

Solve : Major problem..need insite?

I have a custom built tower that I NEED some help with. About 6 months ago it came up with a "blue screen" about windows being corrupted. Reinstalled Windows XP but when I tried hooking up to the internet it wouldn't even recognize that there is an ethernet connector on board. Put it up for a couple months and then i got a "check signal cable" message on the monitor when I tried to start it. Finally got a new video card the other day and replaced it-same result. Can't really afford to take it anywhere right now and I 'm tired of running my laptop as my main computer. Any help would be appreciated.

Here are the stats(as best I can remember on some)

ECS NForce3-A motherboard

Antec CPU cooler
Gainward video card-VGA -GW 10-5(model)/ p/n V10-51 (old card)

Yes there are yellow ?s under Other Devices for: Multimedia Audio Controller; Other PCI Bridge Devices: and SM Bus Controller. It indicates that the drivers are not installed in each case.

Also, there is no category for "Network Adapters" shown like on my laptop. As such, it doesn't show any Ethernet/LAN connections.

Sounds like you need a network driver then. There is no Network Adapters section because there are no drivers installed for it. Find out what network controller you need for your mobo and install it. You should be good to go then. I'd also recommend installing the drivers for the other yellow objects in device manager.Quote from: scotto58 on February 25, 2010, 01:05:51 PM

Besides, that particular firmware may be be actually causing the problem itself.

Solve : How much RAM is enough ????

Answer»

Last week a friend told me that if I add more RAM my computer will run better\faster.
Is there a way to find out how much RAM is enough
My specs. are displayed to the left...But I`ll give the important stuff anyway:E7300 Intell 2.66 Ghz 2 Core-Duo(Dual-core) processor and 3072Mb ram (DRAM freq.333.4 Mhz)...
Is it TRUE what he says Is there a site\program that can help (Or a smart guy\girl!!!).....

All the best;Eric......3 gigs should be plenty. If you have Vista 32 bit, it will only show/use a little more than 3 gigs anyway so adding more wouldn't help much. If it is 64 bit Vista, you can add more and you may see a small increase in performance, but it really depends on what programs you use.

For most users, 3 gigs is more than enough for Vista.Hello,

In your specs you talk about Memory and Physical Memory, which are 3069 and 1024 MB respectively. Generally RAM is referred to as Physical Memory. For Vista 2+ GB is recommended (but you may need more, depends on what applications you run), further depending on your architecture.Note that 32-bit Operating SYSTEMS cannot see more than 4GB or RAM.Bottom line - if you are having any ISSUES, they are NOT RELATED to ram. What specific problems, if any, are you experiencing?I have a home-studio....A M-Audio 2626 soundcard and Pro-Tools...
Pro-Tools by itself is a quite hefty program. When I run this(P-T is a D.A.W.,a software-studio...I have the feeling you allready know this),and I run a soft-synth like Omnisphere and some plug-ins(Echo,limiters ect ect) my processor runs at +90%.Everybody is telling me to buy a Apple(A good one) but nobody can tell me WHY the Apple is so much better.....I do see,in other studios there are a lot of Apple-computers...
THIS is the reason I want to "beef-up" my computer....Or maybe buy a new one...(But the good Apples are EXPENSIVE !!!)............
Thank you for the quick reply...............Greetings from Holland:Eric............

Solve : router help?

Answer»

I just got a
Belkin N Wireless Router.
Model F5D8236 – 4 V 2.
Data Transfer Rate 300 Mbps

I have it all hockedup and now I just have to get a Netbook that I will use with it.

If I am right I don't have to get my netbook first to be able to configure the Router RIGHT???

I meen it is hookedup to my Desktop PC so I sould be able to I think access the Firmware and setup things like Password and Netwirk Names and things like this RIGHT???

Can someone tell me How do do this thanksYeah, you can use the web interface, as long as you using a wired connection. Don't ever trust wireless connections when you want to configure you're router.

http://setup.belkin.com/guide.html

Try using this ^^First I did try the web site for INFORMATION and it does not work the documents download and they don't oen.

And I will be useing a Netbook to connect Wirelessly to the Router.

But right now the Router is connected to my desktop through a CAT wire.

I thought I could just open my Browser and type in some numbers and that gets me into the Firmware???Yeah, it's an IP address, generally default IP's for home routers are 192.168.1.1

I'm not familiar with the default Belkin logins... you should be able to Google it THOUGH. Just type in that IP in your browser. It'll bring you to a web GUI. I KNOW for Linksys, the username, leave blank and the password is admin. I never REALLY liked Belkin much which is why I'm unfamiliar with their setup. What is it you are trying to do? You should not have to configure anything in the router.

Won't work with RAID-0 (striped), with one drive missing or replaced, it's as if no drives are present. You will lose everything. RAID-1 (mirrored) creates two identical drives. Replace one and it will be rebuilt automatically.

Solve : HP D7460 Photosmart printer/paper jam?

Answer»

This printer is 2 years old and NEVER been used. Pulled it out of the box YESTERDAY. Connected wireless and all is good except, it will not stop READING that it has a paper jam, the rollers activate (albeit noisily), then it just goes to the Paper Jam mode and will not work. No clue what to do, I looked for any foreign object or abnormality, Nothing..... HELP!!!!

Thank you in advance for any guidance,

HaukMy first bit of advice to GIVE you would be to check for packaging inside the printer but as you've done this already, and found nothing, then that leaves you with the conclusion that the printer would probably never have worked (sold faulty). It could be some malformation in the rollers, bad motors or simply that the printers programing wasn't installed properly. Unless that printer had a long warranty, then I'm afraid that there's probably not much that you can do.

Remember in future to try and test/inspect any products, be it electrical or not, as soon as POSSIBLE. Sorry that I couldn't be of any more help.

Solve : i5 or i7??

Answer»

I get such great help here I decided to come back with another question. This time about cpus. I'm upgrading my computer (AMD athlon 64 dual) and have decided I want to go with an Intel quad core. I've been looking at ether a i5 or an i7. The i5 looks much nicer to my wallet (MB, memory, all cheaper for the i5) but unsure if I'll always wish I went with the i7.

So my question is, is the i7 THAT much better? I think I've narrowed it down to these cpus

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Productcompare.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2%2050001157%2040000343%201302825342&bop=And&ActiveSearchResult=True&CompareItemList=N82E16819115214%2CN82E16819115215%2CN82E16819115202

(Hope that link works)

So if anyone who might know something about these boards could check out those CPUs (linked) help ease my decision making I would GREATLY appreciate it!I got a buddy with an i7 920 and its great. I've NEVER seen it get even CLOSE to 100% usage. You know the feeling:You have bought a computer and it hurts how fast it "feels\is" old ? If you buy the i7 you will be "up to date" a little longer. You must think by yourself are these (often months) worth it...Another important thing is:What do you want to do with it

Wish you all the best, good luck from Holland:Eric................

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Only your budget can answer this question...The difference between i5 and i7, assuming the same socket and CPU speed, is Hyperthreading - i7 has it, i5 doesn't.
The 920 is a 1366 processor, can run triple channel RAM which 1156 CPUs (the 860 and 750) cannot (triple channel = more memory bandwidth although this doesn't NECESSARILY mean better real world performance). 1366 boards tend to be more expensive as they're a higher end option, so as patio says your budget will determine your choice to a large extent.
I would say if you're heavily multitasking and will NEED the extra memory bandwidth or features of a particular 1366 board, go for the 920. If you're heavily multitasking but don't need those features, get the 860. If you're not an extreme multitasker and don't regularly do multithreaded intensive tasks like video encoding, get the 750. All three are great performers and I don't think you'd be disappointed with them no matter what you do.

Solve : Swapping hard drives?

Answer»

Hi!

My current PROBLEM is that I must move a hard drive from one computer to another.

My computer and ALMOST all of my software was stolen in a break-in. A friend has given me his old computer (complete with the hard drive which he wants back to install in his new machine as a second drive) and I am trying to install an old drive I replaced with a larger one I put in the stolen unit.

The stolen machine was an MDG with a P4 Celeron integrated graphics motherboard.
I wish I could give more info but didn't save a hard copy of the specs. It ran at 3.08GHz and had 1 GB of RAM

The "new" machine is a Compaq Evo D510 SFF Pentium 4 2.4oGHz with 504 MB RAM and the same integrated graphics. The HD I am trying to install is a Western Digital WD 800. It has XP MEDIA Edition with Service Pack 3 installed.

When I installed it I got a black screen with flashing cursor. It won't accept any input.

I am "retired" on a small medical PENSION so new purchases are pretty much out of the question for me.

Any help would be vastly appreciated!

Bob

You cannot simply put in a drive from a different system and expect the new system to boot. You need to boot to an OS cd, format the old drive, and install a new operating system.

Solve : multiple monitors feature?

I know what it is, I've had it set up for years, my monitors are working-they identify properly, I can drag a window from 1 to 2, but I cannot see my mouse pointer on monitor 2. I've tried everything, short of replacing the video card (i shouldn't have to, it sees the monitor fine) I have, run updates(none found), switched the monitor for another known good monitor, ect. I am nearly an expert in PC's, I just can't figure this one out. It stopped working yesterday for no reason.
Once again, I can see what's on the monitor, I can drag a window there, I just cannot see my mouse pointer when I try to go there. Where can I look for information-I have googled this for two days and I get nothing except how to set up multiple monitors-I already did that successfully. Thank you in advance for your help. Sincerely, KarenHave you tried downloading updated video drivers for your video card? This isn't the same as running Windows Updates. If you have an nVidia card, go to http://www.nvidia.com. If you have an ATI card, go to http://ati.amd.com. Thx, yes, there were no updates, only their "control tool", which I downloaded and ran, and I says everything is working properly. ATI Radeon 7500 series.Yikes...I've always had driver problems with ATI Radeon cards older than the 9800 series (the 9800 series and up = all good).

In fact, every card before the 9800 series that I've tried with dual monitors, I've had problems ranging from BSODs to one monitor going nuts. Granted, others' mileage may vary, my EXPERIENCE with those particular models hasn't been the best...

You could try switching monitors (put the one you have as Monitor 1 in the port for Monitor 2 and vice versa). If the exact same monitor is having that problem, then it's the monitor. If the opposite monitor is having the same problem, then it's your video card or its drivers. Also check the monitor cables and make sure none of them have bent pins within their connectors...

FAILING the above, try a different video card. Borrow one from someone ELSE or another PC and see what happens.

Thank you very much, I switched the monitors and the problem must lie in the video card. I will switch video cards in a few days, bummer. As I said, it seems weird that the only thing not working on monitor two is the mouse pointer, otherwise it checks out OK. You're right, it must be the card. I just wanted to be absolutely sure I wasn't missing some setting in Windows XP. But I know this operating system extremely well so I'm glad I ran this by you guys.
This is my first time in a forum like this, I hope to become a regular-not with problems- with solutions. ThxOK, it's now back the way it was-I mean it fixed itself. Intermittent problem? We'll see, I have done nothing to it and it's fixed-you guys are amazing, ha, ha.
I still plan to change the video card, THOUGH. Thx again-I know, I'm nuts!if possible you could reduce hardware acceleration for that monitor's card.

in the Display Settings dialog, on the settings tab, click the Advanced button. On the dialog that then appears, choose the "troubleshoot" tab. reduce the SLIDER by one notch (which disables hardware rendering of some bitmaps and the cursor). Apply and reboot. This should make things less annoying until you are able to replace the card.
OK, so far so good, I followed your advice, (decreased the acceleration) and it seems OK for now, thank you. It does mention "mouse pointer" problem. Is it possible that I was using too much "juice" on my USB ports? I have a Dell Dimension 8200, Pent. 4, CPU 2.26GHz, 2.25GHz, 1.00GB of ram. Just a thought, thx againQuote from: lunadon on February 22, 2010, 05:56:59 PM

Is it possible that I was using too much "juice" on my USB ports?

I'm not sure how USB ports would come into the equation.Yeah, me neither, I just thought it might be some kind of power supply from the motherboard issue.Solved the issue:

The card was simply loose in the mount. Many Dell desktops have that green pushdown thing that holds the cards in place, well I put screws into all of the mounts and everything is working perfectly.

Solve : Downgrading to x86?

Answer»

I just bought a new PC (Dell Studio XPS 8100, Core i5 750) and it CAME preloaded with Windows 7 Home Premium x64. I am considering downgrading (or upgrading, depending on how you look at it) to Windows 7 Professional x86. The only problem is, I am not sure if my graphics card will be able to operate in 32-bit mode. It is an NVidia GeForce 310 http://www.nvidia.com/object/product_geforce_310_us.html and I want to make sure that it will still work on a 32-bit OS. Does anyone have any ideas as to whether I will run into problems?Just download the 32 bit driver for it from the Nvidia site and you're good to go.did you see a 32-bit driver? I couldn't see one.Sorry - I was saying that downloading the driver is the criterion for determining it's 32 bit compatibility - I hadn't looked. But I'm looking now and I don't even see 300 series cards listed.Quote from: ALLAN on February 08, 2010, 11:20:22 AM

I didn't either. Only way I even know how to get a 64-bit driver is on the resource CD that dell included with my PCI'd suggest contacting Dell. Quote from: Allan on February 08, 2010, 11:39:40 AM
I'd suggest contacting Dell.

As per your suggestion, I called Dell and they told me that there was no 32-bit driver available for download, but that if I installed my 32-bit Windows and performed automatic updates that it would install the necessary drivers automatically. That sounds a little fishy to me. Because of the language barrier between myself and the international support rep, that is as much as I could understand.

Do you think that the driver that magically installs itself will just be a generic video driver? Or do you think that such a magical driver even exists? Let's make it easy. Download a disk imaging utility and create an image of your hd. Then you can feel comfortable doing WHATEVER you want with the knowledge that you can always restore the image to your current system state. To be 100% safe, create two images (one to a second HD if possible) and make sure that they are verified. Here's a link to some good free options: http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/backupandimage.shtml. If you want the best of class, that would be Acronis True Image, but it's not free.

Solve : motherboard is confused!?

Answer»

Hello,
my motherboard is detecting my primary master, (hard drive) as IDE (it is SATA)and my 3rd master, CDROM as ATAPI (it is IDE), how can I get the motherboard to correctly identify my hardware connections? ( it will not boot or enter bios settings)A SATA hard drive can be seen by the BIOS as an IDE drive depending on how it was initially setup...

Most OPTICAL drives will be recognised as ATAPI no matter if they are IDE or SATA drives so no worry there...

Why are you fishing around in the BIOS and is this why it will not boot ? ?re: ATAPI: IDE is REALLY just another name for ATA and ATAPI stands for ATA-PI, or AT-Attachment Programmed IO.

First thank you for your response, ok i began to have problems with the pc, it had become unstable, so following advice from the microsoft site, i re-installed the os,it seemed solve the problem of unstability however the fan began racing and upon reboot it would not allow cd/dvd repair due to "checksum(s) not matching", so i abandoned the cd method, ran chk dsk and 2 passes with mem diag. tool (no prob. with either), restarted and it would not boot at all! the error said the HAL DLL was missing or corrupt. so i puchased a new hard drive and am now at this point, upon powering up, the screen looks like this:

GATEWAY

INTEL BOOT options F10
BIOS settings F2
it will not GO past that screen and pressing either option does nothing, restarting w/ ctrl+alt+del then pressing f2 brought up a new screen, "boot agent" and that is where i saw the connections in my original post, if i have somehow pushed the wrong button at the wrong time and all is lost i would be crushed so i hope there is a solution to this problem.Checksum errors can be caused by a weak /failing CMOS battery...replace it.
Part #CR2032 available anywhere...

Unplug all power to the machine for installation.

Solve : Building a Custom Cyberpower PC (Lots of Questions)?

Answer»

If you've seen me on here before it's probably because I was whining about how my computer would never boot correctly. Well, I've decided to replace it. It's well past it's prime.

So I couldn't find a pre-made(I suppose you'd call it that) computer that was anywhere close to being as gamer friendly as my current one without it costing thousands of dollars. Then I stumbled upon Cyberpower's site and found that I could custom-make one that didn't cost quite as much as one of the pre-made ones.
(Which I find sorta surprising, maybe I messed up somewhere...)

Here's the result I got using a Gamer Ultra 7500:
http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/saving/show.aspx?id=2444459
(If this link doesn't work then check the system.txt file attached to this post.)

Now I am rather ignorant when it comes to what hardware matches up with what, so I wanted to have someone with more experience tell me if I've managed to build a working desktop or not.

I guess the first question would be does that desktop configuration work?

Also as you can see from the link(or file) I put in a nVIDIA 9800GT graphics card along with a SLI enabled mobo. I already have a 9800gt in my computer I'm using at the moment, so...

Will two nVIDIA 9800GTs work together in SLI mode?

Will they fit onto the mobo I chose together?

(I ask this because the card I have right now barely fits into my current computer by itself. It's a rather bulky card.)

If I run two nVIDIA 9800GTs together how large of a power supply will I need?

(My one card runs fine on a 450watt PSU, so I assume it would double up to 900watts?)

I'm currently running WinXP Pro so I chose to go with Win7 Pro as an OS.
It came with two different options 32 and 64-bit.

What's the difference between a 32-bit and 64-bit edition of Windows 7?

Since I'm transitioning straight from XP to 7 will I have problems getting games and other programs that I currently use to work with the new OS?
(By that I mainly mean will I still be able to play lower than XP games [ex.Win98 games] on Windows 7?)

Also any other information that you could provide would be helpful.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]My first thought on reading the system.txt file is that the PSU is extremely bad quality and should be avoided at all costs.
My second is that the motherboard isn't a great choice. Yes, it will support SLI with the two 9800GTs, however I've always found Nvidia chipset based boards to be far inferior to AMD or Intel chipset boards in terms of performance and reliability.
Third, the case is also bad quality (leaving aside aesthetics considerations as everyone will have a different opinion on whether or not it looks nice).

As for your other questions - two 9800GTs would, assuming a midrange system to match the cards, require a quality 500W PSU or better. The 450W recommendation you quoted is most likely from the board manufacturer or Nvidia themselves - they recommend a higher wattage than necessary. A 9800GT would be fine on a quality 300W PSU although I'd recommend more, however it wouldn't work with, for example. a low quality 500W PSU.
Compare the different features of the Windows 7 editions before choosing one. Most people do not need the Professional edition - check this link to see what additional features it has over the usual choice of Home Premium.

64-bit vs 32-bit - I have a hard time recommending anyone to buy the 32 bit version nowadays. Put simply, 64-bit supports more RAM and if you run any 64 bit applications it will run them faster. The downside is that some older hardware and software will not be compatible, so just check to make sure drivers are available.

That last does touch on your last question - older games may not work well on Windows 7. Running them in compatibility mode might help, but I'd be inclined to check around and see what anyone else's experiences are with those games in 7.

32 bit applications will run in a 64 bit OS, no problem.
However that does remind me, XP Mode is a Professional/Ultimate only feature, it's not present in Basic or Home Premium, so to run older applications which won't run in 7 for some reason you could use that (XP Mode), if you have a valid XP license for it. Unfortunately it's no good for games though, so don't assume that this will mean you can run all your old games etc in Windows 7.Quote from: Crosshair on February 07, 2010, 04:52:28 AM

Agreed. Perhaps if you have an XP license you could have a dual boot set up. It's not that practical, but you could game better in that than in a Virtual machine

In my experience, Compatability mode has been touch and go. I ran one of my dad's video editing apps in xp compat. mode and the performance was drastically worse than on the computer actually running xp. That could be an error on my part or just compatability mode being poor. This is what 7 says when you open an app in compatability mode Quote
***.exe has been set to run in compatability mode for an earlier version of windows. For best results, turn of compatability mode for ***.exe before you open it. (*** meaning app name. Itunes, btw.)

Looking at the two compared I'm still leaning toward the Pro.
(That XP compatibility mode is really what's pulling me over. I have a lot of things, not just games, that were meant to be run on XP. Some of my stuff is even Win98.)
However, you must understand that I have never actually used a Win7 computer. So when I compare the two versions of it I'm thinking in terms of the differences between XP Home and XP Pro. I'm referring mainly to the administrative rights that drove me insane when I had XP Home. It might have just been the computer I had at that time though.

Okay, the oldest games I think I have are some Win95/98 games. There are about 10 of them.
From what I could find out using google it seems like the XP mode can run some of them well. The only ones that I've seen some people having trouble with is my 7 game collection of the original The Sims.

I'm not sure, but it should. And it would save you the trouble of making a partition on your Hard Drive. Best check with someone more epxperienced about that.A hard drive with XP installed cannot simply be moved from one machine to ANOTHER without issues...
This is because when it's installed XP ties itself to the existing hardware...
Most of the time this will fail.

Logisys aren't great either but clearly the one you are using isn't that bad as it's still working
Reliability is all about make/model - more specifically the original manufacturer of the PSU. For your scenario I would pick a Corsair TX650, it's a great quality unit which leaves you some headroom for upgrades.

If you like the aesthetics there's no compelling reason not to go for it. You won't be building the machine so it shouldn't affect you much personally. A case is a choice based largely on personal taste, I'm not much into "bling bling" cases so I can't really recommend a flashy case for you although someone else may have some ideas.

Solve : Installed Graphics card, no sound?

Answer»

I have an HP Pavillion with XP home and i have just INSTALLED a Radeon HD 4550 graphics card.

I would LIKE to be able to disable the sound from the said card and use my' line out' from the PC as these are the only speakers I use.

Can I do this???

Thanks

More info, My Graphics card has a DVI and VGA. I have a VGA plugged into at the moment and speakers plugged into the line out, yet since i installed the card there as been no sound???When your computer starts up, press the key to enter BIOS, find and enabled the onboard audio. The HDMI audio for your graphic card would of disabled this and possibly enabled HDMI audio instead (disable that if there and not wanted).

Start up Windows. Right click on the white speaker in your system tray, select Playback devices. Set the default to the original sound card.

If that didn't solve your problem or you wish to clean up and REMOVE:
Uninstall the HDMI drivers from the Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices and re-install the old sound card drivers if necessary.
Thanks Azzaboi,

I enabled the onboard audio in the BIOS, then after that i had to disable and enable a couple of things in the Device MANAGER. Now it WORKS fine.

Nice one!!

Solve : TV Sound?

For the HD 5770 the link given says:
Quote

Integrated HD audio controller
* Output protected high bit rate 7.1 channel surround sound over HDMI with no additional cables required
* Supports AC-3, AAC, Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio formats

Hmm, I'm only getting audio shown over the DP port. So if I get one of these: http://www.cables2u.co.uk/displayport-hdmi-cable-p-854.html It'll be fixed. Although it does say over HDMI...

(Have installed flash 10, no mouse gigantism yet...)GOT the sound working. The TV has to be DISPLAYING something from the computer to be considered connected for audio. Now as far as I'm aware Windows 7 can't output sound across multiple audio devices. So BUMBER but not that bad, I can just switch when I want to use the TV.

I now have a tail to my mouse to prevent gigantism.

Solve : What Cable do I Need??

I have an old computer. I bought a NEW ide cable for hard drive. Although the label says "40 Pin", which is what I need as my mother board actually has 40 pins. The cable actually provides for only 39 pins. What kind of cable do I need? The 39 pin should still work. Have you TRIED it yet?Yeah, it won't fit. There are 40 pins in the mother board and only 39 pin openings in the cable plug. Definitely won't work.it probably won't fit... since pin #20 is plugged. It will only go into a connector that has no Pin 20...
Since Pin 20 is one of the many ground pins you can chop it off to get the plug in.

Since Pin 20 is one of the many ground pins you can chop it off to get the plug in.

make bloody sure you cut off the right one though! otherwise you may make the connector unusable!

He could also drill a small hole into the plugged spot on the cable itself. I would think this would be safer than trying to cut the exact pin or PULL it out. Otherwise, I would see if there is a IDE cable with #20 open.Take a look at an 80 conductor cable...Quote from: patio on February 24, 2010, 07:36:51 PM
Take a look at an 80 conductor cable...

That should work too. Some people confuse a 80 conductor, thinking it means there are 80 pin holes. There are still 40/39, but there are 80 wires instead of 40.And most i've seen don't have the "dead" spot...just an empty hole...

Solve : old dell 4500 upgrade?

Answer»

I have an old dell dimension 4500 that still works, but I would like to put a new motherboard/CPU and video card in it. Can I do this? Someone told me you cant upgrade Dell equipment because of PROPRIETARY case designs.. IE, only a very specific motherboard will fit....Thanx Not true...
However you will want to add a new PSU to your shopping list as they were propietary in older Dells...Ok, thanx.. To be specific, this is what Id like to do- install a XFX nForce 750i SLI Extreme Edition Motherboard W/ Intel Pentium Dual Core E5400 Processor w/ Fan Bundle and a decent PCIE video card, also a new power supply. Id really like to find out if this specific motherboard set up will fit my existing ( Dell dimension 4500) case/ attachment points without any ( or at least not serious/ complicated) modifications. Again, thanx for all your input.Yes.
The anchor points are STANDARDIZED...
Remember to USE the brass/PVC standoffs between the MBoard and the case...
And do NOT overtighten the hold down screws.

Solve : Gateway All In One ZX 6800?

Answer»

I want to switch my boot C Drive (SSD) 64Gig, to a slave drive, and use my big drive as the boot drive. I do not
know how to take the back off to switch the drives. I did format the big slave drive and PUT an IMAGE of the boot drive on it.
Anyone know how to take the back off? What do you mean about "taking the back off" ? ?

What tool did you use to image the "big" drive ? ?

In the slave position all that's needed is to use the big drive's manuf. Free tools to clone the small to big...
Once done you disconnect completely the small drive...set the "big" drive to master and re-boot the system.
It should boot normally and all your data and apps should be intact.

After that you can add the small drive jumpered as slave and wipe it and use it for extra storage.

Not quite sure you would want to sacrifice the performance of an SSD drive for the big drive however...Windows 7 storage management. I can't find anything on line from Gateway about physically removing the Back of the
computer (It's a all-in-one) to get at the drives. So one should always use the UTILITIES that represent the Physical Drives. If this machine is new enough to have an SSD drive it should have tons of info on it's specs and owners manuals etc...
You haven't MENTIONED any of this so it's hard to GUESS...

Solve : PSU works for Biostar and doesn't for ASUS?

Answer»

My PSU is 450 W (24 pin). It has worked for my Chintech VNF4 mboard, it worked and woks for Biostar TA790GX 128M , however it doesn't for ASUS M4A785-M.
I remove all components (RAM, HDD, Vcard...), leave just mboard and CPU (Biostar works with the same CPU pretty good) and when I start it, it works for 1.5-2 seconds and stops. The next time it starts is only after I remove the power cord, wait for about 3-4 seconds until the led on the BOARD is off and plug it back in, but again with the same outcome.
Please advice.Do other PSUs work with that board?

It could be a bad mobo.

Is the board mounted in a case?

Are there any other peripherals PLUGGED into that board? At least one other PSU worked.
Biostar that works is mounted in case, but ASUS no. I plased it on a non-conductive bench and then tested.
No peripherals plugged in, except for CPU (which as I told before works OK with Biostar). Some moder Motherboards will not ork without a grounp plane. The need to have a metal tray or sheet underneath. With spacers, of course. Moust the board as indicated in the instruction manual. The manual does not say you can test it without a metal plane under the board.
That fact that it often works anyway does not mean that is the way they want you to use it. The metal case is part of the design paameters.Sorry, couldn't quite understand what exactly you mean. However, if you mean to say that in some CASES the metal case provides "Ground" contact, we can exclude this too, since at FIRST I tested it monted in the case. Then when the problem was seen, I removed it from the case and tryed out of it.Besides, as I told before, it works using another PSU. Also the PSU it doesn't work with, works OK for another mobo (Biostar). Mistery huh:)OK. I could not think of the right terminology. It is a 'back plane' that provides a reflective shield for VHF signals. Without it the system can become unstable.

The symptoms are typical PSU shutdown from thermal overload. The mother is making your PSU run hot. You can use a bigger PSU, but that just ignores why the mother is drawing so much power.

http://support.asus.com/PowerSupplyCalculator/PowerSupplyCalculator_right.aspxI doubt that this can be the rason either, cause after the start, it works literally 2 seconds, no more. For sure this doesn't give enough time for PSU become overheated. By the way that other PSU that works OK for this mobo, provides even less power than this one does. The one it stalls with is 450W, the one it works OK with is 400W. I don't think ASUS power supply calculation MAKES sense at this point, since as I told, now I removed all peripherals, except for CPU. Looks like the issue is resolved. I was just told that there are a couple of burnt condensers in the PSU. For some reason although it didn't affect the Biostar, it did affect ASUS. Those condensers are replased now. I'll check that out later on.

Solve : Wireless Router question?

Answer»

I need a WIRELESS router that will allow me to use my macbook pro and a dell laptop in my house. Need an excellent range so I can sit outside and work.
will the airport extreme do the trick or is there a better option?
thanks!!Airport extreme is a good option for your needs. you can also try DLink DIR-655 Wireless N Router. We really need more details. Exactly, how far from the router would you be when sitting outside? What barriers, i.e. walls, are there between where your router is located and the location you would NORMALLY be sitting outside?

If the outside location is ACTUALLY fairly CLOSE to the location of the router, with only lumber, drywall, and a non-brick exterior siding, many models of wireless routers would PROBABLY work fine for you.

Solve : Hard Drive failure???

Answer»

I have a Dell that I am not sure if its a HD issue or not.

Here is what happened.

Some time back I had a virus and took the PC to Geek Squad (will never do that again). They supposedly fixed it but when I got it back the HD was set up as E instead of C and I have had nothing but problems since.

Here is my current issue:

start the computer and get the following errors:

Start on its own:
Primary HDD 1 not found
Strike F1 to continue
A disk read error occurred.
Press Control-Alt-Delete to restart
When I do F12 to get to the boot menu I get the following:

1st
Select normal
Strike F1 to continue
A disk read error occurred.
Press Control-Alt-Delete to restart

2nd
Select #4 IDE-CD-ROM Device
Strike F1 to continue
Press and key to boot from CD
I insert a Recovery disk. It does its thing until I have to insert a disk labeled "Windows Automated System Recovery Disk" into the floppy drive. I do not have this disk.
If I GO to set up I see:
Primary Drive 0 Hard Drive
Primary Drive 1 Unknown Device

Any ideas as to what is going on?

Thanks for any help that can be provided. You didn't take it to best buy did you? $300.00 for computer repair is excessive in my opinion...

Anyways, lets see if we can figure out what is wrong.

You mention your new drive is now labeled E: instead of C: so I imagine that you manged to load windows at least once successfully?

ONE reason why a drive can suddenly disappear is bad jumper settings. I would open the computer up and take a look to see if your HD is connected with a gray cable (IDE, or PATA) which ever word your comfort with.. Gray cable is better.

SATA is a small blue/red cable see which cable you have.

Can we please have more info about your dell? Model number would suffice if you do not know the system specs.

My experience with BestBuy is they are famous for removing viruses by reinstalling windows and then just clone the necessary programs and files back to your computer.. They don't actually do all these registry and anti-malware scanners.

If you are the gray cable, check to see if the HD is plugged in with the CD drive. If it is it is just a jumper setting and you can just change it so they do not conflict with each other.. If you are using a SATA drive ( blue/red cable) I would check the cables.

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the PROGRAM, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.check the BIOS if the IDE has detected the hard drive. if is ok there
check the IDE.IF problem still persist, try to delete the partition.Quote from: mikeson on February 12, 2010, 12:42:28 PM

check the BIOS if the IDE has detected the hard drive. if is ok there
check the IDE.IF problem still persist, try to delete the partition.

You may want to qualify the above with a disclaimer saying ALL his data will be gone...OK I opened patient up. Gray cable it is and the HD and CD are on individual cables to the mother board.

Computer is a Dell Dimension 8200
Intel Pentium 4 Processor: 2.4Ghz
Level 2 Cache: 5112kb
BIOS version A09
HD is a Barracuda 7200.7, 120 gig.

Regarding the suggestion that I run a diagnostics I can not. I can not get past the errors I stated originally.

I had someone else tell me to change the hard drive thru BIOS, but I can not. The only thing BIOS will let me do is to turn the primary drive on or off.

Any other suggestions? Quote
Regarding the suggestion that I run a diagnostics I can not. I can not get past the errors I stated originally.
Apparently, you didn't read my reply carefully enough.
HD diagnostic tool will create bootable disk, so it doesn't MATTER, if your hard drive boots, or not.Dell Dimension 8200 System Codes and MessagesI downloaded "SeaToolsforWindowsSetup-1201" onto a CD. I'm not sure its a bootable CD. I get nothing when I start up the computer.

I select the boot menu and select CD drive. Message I get back is "Strike F1 to retry boot".

What am I missing?

Thanks for the help.Did you?

The one you try to burn is the Windows installer that will not allow you to run from the CD rom. You need the Seatools ISO version: Please see URL below:

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/seatooldreg

Pick ISO if you want to boot from CD(need the Cd burning software as mention above to put on a CD, or floppy if you want to use a floppy.

Before we should continue, in your system BIOS is the Hard Drive even listed?

I would assume that if the hard drive is not listed in BIOS the software won't find it? If you enter system setup you should see your Hard drive and CD drive and what slots they are using something like

Segate Model Number XXXXXMB
None
CD-Drive 24x-32x-4x
None

If the Hard Drive is found run the tool to test the health of your hard drive.

If Hard drive is NOT found in the Bios, recheck cables to ensure that they are inserted properly, UNPLUG and reinstall the cables if you can. The cables should only fit one way. Unplug the CD drive cable to the motherboard and move the cable with the HD to the other slot. You have 2 slots primary and secondary. If the Hard drive on primary is not finding anything move the cable to secondary to see if it works.

If you have another computer desktop try plugging the hard drive as slave/secondary on a working computer to see if the HD works. If you can.
Thank you for being patient with me!

Finally got the HD diagnostics and ran it.

Results:
- Short DST (Drive Self Test) completed without error.
- Short DST passed
- Long Test passed after repair

I also switched the HD cable on the mother board with the CD cable. No difference.

Any other suggestions?

Solve : booting fails. No motherboard beepsound. RAM ok, hdd ok. any ideas?

hey! can anybody help me with this issue; my desktop fails to boot, no beep sound but the fan runs ok.A few more details on what happened prior to this, any NEW devices installed ;protection apps used ETC. would be helpful...Also, are you certain the display is WORKING?I use a crt display and I have tested it and it works as expected. b4 this there has been power unstability in my place and I do not have a ups, hence there are HIGH chance this might have caused the problem. A month ago I added a new hdd (10gb)which was a second hand sale. I use kaspersky 6.0 as an antivirus. I somehow suspect the motherboard because I have tested the other devices (1gb RAM, 80gb hdd) and they all work properly. b4 this booting could fail but after unplugging and plugging back the motherboard devices it would boot normally. Is there an operating system on this 2ND HDD ? ?

Solve : Built new system, no monitor response?

Answer»

Hello everyone. I'm new here. Looking for some help with something that's got me stumped. I've built about 8 systems in the last 5 years. I'm currently working on one for a friend who was on a tight budget, so we went AMD instead of Intel.
Here's the setup:
Motherboard: Biostar MCP6PB M2+ Motherboard - Socket AM2+, µATX, Audio, GeForce 6150 Graphics, SATA, RAID
Processor: AMD ATHLON 64 X2 5200+ Processor ADO5200IAA5DO - 2.70GHz, Socket AM2, 1MB Cache, 1000MHz (2000 MT/s) FSB, Brisbane, Dual-Core, OEM

Put it into a new Cooler Master Elite case with a new 500w power supply (that I tested). Standard SATA Lite-On DVD/RW Drive and Seagate BARRACUDA 1 TB hard drive. Onboard sound and audio. 1GB (1x1GB) DDR2 667MHz memory

We plugged all this into my husband's Envision flat panel monitor (VGA) and his Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard.

The ENTIRE system powers on, fans are all running, seems to be working, no beeps from motherboard, but the monitor light never goes from orange to blue, so it's obviously not responding to whatever's going on in the computer.

I've already tried moving the RAM around in case I read the slots wrong, but it makes no difference. Same thing if we TRY to power on without a mouse/keyboard plugged in.

I'm completely stumped here. Any ideas? You mite want to go to the motherboard manufactures website for the manual and make sure everything is compatible for that board. and if you need the manual ,maybe download it too, they help Re check your atx 20 or 24 pinconnection and your 4 or 8 pin connection. You might want to try a our of case test. Use 1 stick of ram> cpu and heatsink connected> cpu fan> video hooked up to monitor? kekboard and mouse> start system to see if you get a display.Thermal paste applied properly ? ?
All MBoard standoffs in place ? ?um this happened to me when i rebuilt the system...if you have POST codes tell them to us...or talk to your motherboard manufacter

what my problem was, the graphics card was not in all of the way make sure it is...make sure the fan is spinning and make sure all the connections to it are firm and in place

Solve : Computer Freezing, relatively new, clean install?

Answer»

My System:

Windows 7 Professional (64-Bit)
Desktop, Self Built October 27, 2009
Mushkin Blackline Enhanced 1600 DDR3 RAM (4x2GB, 8GB Total)
ASUS M4A79T Deluxe Motherboard (AM3, onboard sound, realtek)
AMD Phenom II X4 965 3.4 ghz Quad-Core Processor
ATI Radeon 5870 1GB Video Card (PCI-E)
Logitech G9X Mouse (USB)
Saitek Cyborg Keyboard (USB)

My Problem:

The system quite often will freeze completely with 0 responsiveness. The only way to bypass this is to PRESS the restart button on my computer. This problem first happened two days after the computer was built and has been happening ever since. Sometimes it happens very, very often, and then I might go a few days to a week without any problems. I have only only frozen while playing a game once (and I do a lot of gaming). Most often this happens while I am just browsing the web, listening to music, or talking on VOIP programs. I have monitored the temperatures of my computer using Speed Fan and nothing is overheating.

I have tried the following with no success: updating the BIOS, sound DRIVERS, video card drivers, doing a clean install of Windows. Prior to reinstalling windows earlier, I had also tried defragmenting my drive and doing a virus scan. I have also ran the memory diagnostic tool and checked the hard drive for errors using Windows - no problems were detected.

Currently, I am running on a clean install of windows and the computer is still freezing up. The first time, it happened in the middle of installing one of the drivers for my motherboard, the second while I was installing Catalyst Control Center for my ATI video card, and third while I was eating dinner while there was simply a browser window open on the computer. The computer also may freeze up while shutting down (while just the Windows "Shutting Down" screen is up) and the same also happens when Windows is STARTING up.

What worries me the most about this being a hardware issue is that nothing had been completely installed on my computer yet (besides windows updates) when the first freeze occured after doing the clean install of Windows earlier today. To be specific, the first freeze (after reinstall) happened when I was just in the process of installing something, so a small number of files from Norton Security had been installed at the time of freeze up.

I do not know if this is any coincidence or not, but I was watching a live video stream two times in a row last night and both of those attempts at watching caused my computer to freeze. I froze up many other times that night, however, while not watching any videos. When I freeze up while listening to music, (I don't really know how to describe it) until I hit the reboot button there is a static-ish loud type of computer noise.

When building this computer, we put a lot of EFFORT into making sure everything was compatible. I am just really desperate to figure out this problem, so any help would be extremely appreciated. It is sounding to me like something is wrong with the motherboard, but I need some other opinions before I go out and buy another.

Thank you,

Samantha
Is that Mushkin RAM on the ASUS Preferred Vendoer List for that MBoard ? ?
This is normally not an issue but it becomes 1 when running DDR3 RAM...Hi,

Thanks for the response!

The RAM I got is indeed on the Preferred Vendor list for the motherboard.

Samantha

Update:

I would also like to add that I ran the windows memory test again last night and 0 errors came up, and that I also ran the hard drive diagnostic SOFTWARE which I obtained from my hard drive manufacturer's website (Seagate). No issues with that either.Saitek although a high end product has had issues in the past...
Try for a few days with a different keyboard and see if that helps...
Granted i'm grasping at straws right now cause that's a pretty healthy build and you shouldn't be having issues...

One other thing...actually 2...you didn't mention what PSU is in this and are you sure you have 64bit Drivers for all devices ? ?

Hi everyone, I have a CPU which should be running at 3.0GHz but only runs at 1.8GHz

Here are the specs

Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 @ 3.0GHz
2GB RAM
Zotac 8600GT 512MB DDR2
P5GC-MX Motherboard

I updated the BIOS, and checked in the BIOS for the ability to overclock it but it wasn't there.
So if I could get help making my CPUs run at its 3.0GHz speed instead of 1.8GHz it'd be nice. What utility is REPORTING that speed ? ?
If it's Windows it's not ALWAYS accurate...
DLoad and install CPU ZHere you are

Dual-Cores are always RATED with half the core speed in CPU-Z.Quote from: lino4 on February 08, 2010, 07:37:45 PM

Dual-Cores are always rated with half the core speed in CPU-Z.
This is not entirely true. While at idle cpu-z will only show about half the core speed but with the cpu running at 100% cpu-z will show the full speed.
Download the latest version of cpu-z and run a cpu stress test to see what happens.Quote from: lino4 on February 08, 2010, 07:37:45 PM

Half the speed of each core? Or half the speed of the 2 combined?

Because my 2.7GHz E5400 is showing 2693.53MHz with CPU-Z.

Unless you're talking about the Bus speed. My E8500 3.16 GHz shows around 1995 MHz until you push it, then it shows the 3159 MHz core speed.Hmm. I wonder why mine is showing the full speed when it's nowhere near maxed out. In fact, only 1% to 5% according to Everest. It's called by many names but throttling is the most common...
cruisin's CPU has it...blake i'm guessing yours does not.CPU-Z VER 1.43 does not support your processor. Download and install the latest version 1.53.1 and try again. http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.phpI found the problem myself, my motherboard only supports a FSB of 800MHz so I need to get a new motherboard, thanks everyone.

Solve : New homebuilt computer not booting.?

Answer»

I apologize if this has been solved in a previous discussion, but I couldn't find my specific error.

I built my first PC TODAY, and after its all plugged up, it wont POST or go to BIOS.

The components are:

NZXT M59 Case

AMD Athlon II X2 245

ASRock M3A785GMH/128M AM3 AMD 785G

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL

HITACHI Deskstar HD31000 IDK/7K (0S00163) 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5

APEVIA ATX-AQ700W-BK 700W ATX12V

I read somewhere that my CPU does not SUPPORT the RAM, but I am not sure. If that is an issue, would that cause the problem?

Any HELP is greatly appreciated! I was stupid, and a cord had came loose.
Mods can delete, thanks.Quote

I doubt there is a cpu/ram compatibility issue here. If there's going to be any compatibility issue it would be between the motherboard and ram. It just so happens that despite that g-skill is a qualified RAM vendor for that board, for ddr3, that PARTICULAR p/n number is not showing on the qualified vendor list.. See here: http://www.asrock.com/mb/memory/M3A785GMH128M.pdf
But let's not conclude a ram compatibility issue yet..

Do you hear any sounds/beeps of any kind? Are the fans and hard drive spinning up? Quote

Solve : hard drive free space question?

Answer»

In WINDOWS XP Home Edition, when I go to "Computer", right click on the hard drive and click "properties", it shows that the used space and the free space are both blue, INSTEAD of used space being pink and free space being blue. Why would the free space and used space both be blue? Same color blue? Is the drive compressed?yes, same color blue. I don't think the drive is compressed, unless is happened by mistake at some point. I've never had a need to compress my hard drives. Then I don't have an answer for you unless your system is having a hard time rendering the color purple - sorry. You know what.. It just occurred to me that I AM having color problems. The cable for my crt monitor is bad and I cannot replace the cable as it's permanently attached. When the computer is booted, there is a blue-like tint over the screen. I used to be able to wiggled the cable to make it work and display the right colors, but that doesn't work anymore. The only other monitor I have is a crt, but I can give that monitor a try..

Blue is default for used space, purple is default for free space.Quote from: Allan on March 26, 2010, 03:07:08 PM

purple is default for free space.

funny, to me the default looks pink

But anyway, I switched monitors and the problem is corrected. I can now see the free space as pink/purple... whatever

and yes I had it backwards, free space is pink and used space is blue

THX mr. AllanConsidering how the Solar System is set up i have no clue why Free space would be Pink...Looks pink to me too, but the documentation says it's supposed to be purple. Anyway, glad it's straightened out.Quote from: patio on March 26, 2010, 03:27:21 PM
