Solve : Attaching 2 processors together? can it be done??

Answer»

I was just wondering...for anyone that can help me it would be great.

Is it possible to turn a pentium 4 (1 PROCESSOR) into a dual core?

Maybe by attaching/saudering CERTAIN wires together would be my idea but I'm not sure. Please help me if you can. It's just a curiousity of mine The way you're thinking, no. Regular single processor boards aren't REALLY designed to handle two seperate processors at the same time.

However, there are boards that do this. They're usually used in servers with the Xeon processors and have places for two processors to be inserted. Thanks very MUCH ^_^

Solve : worst printer?

Answer»

hi i have a problem of my two printer. i cant printer on those printer in my own pc but in other pc in a network i can.

this two printer is install in this two pc's... in my other pc the default printer is the lx-300, then i want to PRINT in my other printer NAMED epson stylus 90 but i can't.

what do you think is the problem of this printer?

can you help me?Since other two network pc can print on it you should be able to. Is this a network printer? Did you connect to it on the network using your pc?

User Settings to add new printers, you should locate it on the network and connect to it. If you want to print with epson then you should select the that printer to print from.joeloffelsienes ...... I'm not certain I understand your issue........... It sounds like you have 2 pcs and each one has a printer connected to it. The 2 pcs are networked , but you can only print from one of the printers.
Has the printer sharing worked before or.......... are you just SETTING up the network?
Are you able to see both printers from both PCs ?

Please let us know.

Solve : A very strange problem?

Answer»

Just today I was using my computer (playing system shock2 if that is any help) and it started to get a little slow. I restarted my computer and then a flash of the blue screen of death then I can’t turn it back on. I think it’s a PROBLEM with my motherboard or PROCESSOR because every thing SEEMS like it’s working normally I can hear the hard drives spin up, monitor still works, video card is fine. I’m at a loss what to do I’ve un and replugged every thing and still NOTHING any ideas?

Might need to explain this a little better because you wouldn't be able to tell if the video card or monitor is fine if there isn't a working processor or motherboard and the computer isn't starting up.

When you turn it on, exactly what is happening?

What error message, if any, was present on the BSOD you mentioned?

When booting, do you get to the POST screen?

Are there any beeps?

Also need FULL specs for your system.

Solve : I Doubt This Website Can Help Me?

Answer»

I'll make it simple. My Monitor's LED turns on (green LIGHT),however nothing displays. Prior to this when it did come on both the top edge of the screen and a wide range of the bottom of the screen was covered in black this required to lean my monitor downward in order for my display to show properly. A few reps doing this the screen no longer turned on, which after a while it usually does. Whats Wrong?Try the monitor on a KNOWN working machine...if it does the same thing chances are it's the monitor going bad.
If it acts normally then chances are it's your vid card....okay, but how does this occur in the first place out of NOWHERE? and does this mean i need to purchase an entirely new vid card. Mind You, This HAPPENED before, however, a day's rest restored my monitor. Could This happen again, or was it coincidental?Anything Electronic has a mind of it's own...
Coincidence ? ? Maybe.

Follow the steps so we can find out which it is first...errr, "out of nowhere"? I thought you said that you needed to tilt the monitor forward just to get the proper picture? I'm pretty sure that isn't normal behaviour.

I had a similiar problem with a monitor I had. the magnets where all screwy, so the entire picture was condensed into a single picture in the middle of the monitor. a very bright picture. I could smack it, and every smack would make the picture get a little bigger and then it would shrink again. I'd have to smak it over and over again until i "inflated" the picture BACK to fill the screen. Then it would be good for a while.

Short story on that, It didn't end up dying completely, but rather, I got so frustrated and smacked it so hard I caused it to snap off it's swivel base and shoot sparks. woops.

Solve : Display?

Answer»

My background on my computer isnt working. I had a picture and i right clicked it and set it to background and my background is just a plain color. and it wont change to the picture i had selected. so i tried another picture and it didnt work either. then i went to my desktop and i rightclicked and i pulled up the properties. and went to display. the only thing there it will let me change is the color.

How can i get it to let me not have a plain background?Does anyone know what to do?

Please help. Thanks.please take a screen shot of your display properties, just remember to censor any senstive information before posting it. i would like to see what you mean by it not letting you change your background.like when i go to the display settings, it will only let me change the color of the background; its wont let me click anything else besides color.

how can i fix that?

heres a pic of whats going on. it wont let me click browse or click anything but colorit may be a virus. please do both virus and spyware scans.

just a small question, have you been EDITING the registry?i dont know what editing the registry means... could you tell me?

and i dont think its a virus becaus i have anti virus running and i RUN scans dailyplease download and run hijack this, then post the log here.

you can get hijack this hereI had this exact same problem pop up on one of my machines. I believe the problem was related to Active Desktop, or some convolution of that web-based stuff. It HAPPENED after I installed Plus! for Windows XP. If it's not that, it's probably just a renegade program that CHANGED a policy in the registry.

Solve : Hard Drive: wrong size/delete error?

Answer»

I have a new pc As i have a couple at home have AGREED to allow my son to use any bits that will increase the size etc of the one he uses with my old pc.
Having said this he has duly snapped up the HDD a newish 80gig maxtor to add to the 20 gig on his.
This is where the problems have arisen from. As i had the drive partitioned into 3 sections he has tried to delete them and reformat using FDISK etc on a win 98 startup disk.

Right problems: in fdisk there is only a total of about 12 gig being seen? I have also now connected it as a slave to an existing pc using xp to see if that can see the whole drive. Doing this the machine doesn't recognise the drive at all. Once xp boots it finds new hardware, recognises the drive but only shows the last original partition data intact.

I have found a small freeware that claims to restore HDD's to factory settings. I have loaded this ran it and that reports the full size correctly but then says doesn't need restoring

How can I get the drive back to full capacity. All data on there origanlly has already been backedup as needed so even a way to completely format the whole drive ANYTHING that will restore it to be seen and as such be able to replace his small HDD

Any help wouldbe appreciated as I'm struggling to think of what to search for now on googleDon't worry- this is a problem with the Windows 98 version of FDISK. I believe that disks over a certain size WOULD subtract 64GB from the actual total. (that would be 16, but we're forgettting about the fact that an 80GB drive is not quite 80GB)

I believe Microsoft has document this problem and RELEASED a fix.

good thing I read the MSKB when I'm bored. here is the knowledge base article:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=263044

good luck to you.Travel to bootdisk.com and grab a WinME bootdisk...this should work fine.
Or you could grab the diagnostics from the drive manuf. site....FREE.

I guess after reboot if it still isn't responding,I'm just going to have to bite the bullet. Thanks, again,in advance. CNReddMe,again! I bit the bullet,so to speak, and bought a new CD/DVD drive by Lite-On (I know it's cheap, but it IS Christmas time!) Simple hook in,read the blank CD,and I'm off and burning,no problems.Or so I thought.Tonight,I went to burn a DVD.Movie I had downloaded last week and had already burned once.Well, after I confirm a good burn,I usually dump the movie to keep my memory open, and if I want/need another copy,I use 1CLICK DVD PRO to copy.I bought this program earlier this year and have had no problems.Tonight,it isn't reading the DVD as a valid disc.It plays fine in my stand alone DVD player, but will not even PLAY in MEDIA PLAYER.HELP!?!....AGAIN!?!?! I left the box the new drive came in with my father-in-law,so he could take it and buy one for himself,so I don't have ACCESS ot it tonight.Any thoughts?Guess I posted at a bad time....Any thoughts appreciated...Thanks and Merry Ho-Ho!Merry Christmas to you as well...
Let's see if we can GET you outta this mess.
First off even though priced very competitively i have never had issues with Lite-On drives so for now we'll assume the drive is fine.
Some questions and suggestions though...
What program are you burning with ? ?
What type of DVD is this ? ? Factory ? a Copy ? ? etc...

DLoad and install CDBurnerXPro....FREE and try with that.
Also borrow a blank DVD from everyone you know of different makes...some burners believe it or not are finiky about which blanks they prefer...

Try those and stop back with the info requested.

I almost forgot...a burner should be jumpered as master and connected to the end connector of the IDE cable.
For now dis-connect any other drives on that channel unless it is your main hard drive....

Solve : Westren digital prob?

Answer»

hy ! i have this prob that i cannot open my local disk E: which is 197 gb and i have all my things in it . when i open it it says the disk in drive E: is not formatted. format now.? it was opeing before but i dont know what happend. Is this some kind of virus or something else, can someone plz help me. I also ran chkdsk it runs fine and says the E: is ntfs but in windows when i see the properties of E: it says RAW format. The chkdsk stops in the end when verifing the usn journal. Can some one help? plz plz plz plzExactly what happens when you RUN a chkdsk? Does it just hang or give you an error message?
When did this start?
well the frist time when i ran the chkdsk it started well then it just continued with the same message it was something LIKE this "giveing index 0$ to number 25" i dont no for sure what was the exact thing. it went for about an hour then he started with saying "moving orphaned file E.g farenhiet.exe". when it was all finished it said verifing usn journal.and it stays there forever. then U have to restart then again the chkdsk starts. and i have also noticed that the safe mode does not start it stops at mup.sys just like usn journal no message and no error. can help plz
RAW is not a good sign...your data may be lost.
Is this an EXTERNAL drive ?
Did this drive have an aborted Windows install on it ?

We really need alot more info including the machine, OS and what happened prior to this to assist further.

My suspicion is it is an external HDD that was disconnected improperly without using the safely remove hardware option in Windows...it is not an external hard disk
it did not have any windows in it
i had this prob before with my D: drive but it was then ok. when i restarted the D: drive was raw, then if i restart again the the D: drive was NTFS. PLZ is there any way of regaing the CONTROL of the disk because i have all my things in that drive if i had to format it i would have to start all over again. PLZ

Solve : I Can't Boot From My External HDD?

Answer»

I'm stumped

I just bought a USB HDD enclosure because I'd like the ability to BOOT from an external HDD. I know my Asus motherboard supports it because it has an option for it, USB HDD. I have 768MB of RAM (Kingston), one 40GB Maxtor HDD (Master), one Lite-On CD Writer (Slave), AMD Duron 1400 and integrated video, audio and ethernet.

First, I installed a working Windows XP Home HDD on my brand new USB HDD enclosure to see if I could externally boot right away. My PC just kept resetting. It doesn't even reach the Windows XP logo part. First boot device was set to USB HDD of course. Second, Third and Fourth boot devices were all set to CDROM because when I choose HDD 0 for any, it boots up normally.

I know the HDD is good because I use it on my other PC. I even tried two good HDDs to make sure. I called my supplier and he told me that in order to boot from an external USB HDD, I must first install the operating system (Windows XP Home) externally onto the external USB HDD.

I followed his advice. I DISCONNECTED first my internal HDD 0 to avoid a costly accident. Windows Setup detected my external USB HDD. I deleted all partitions, created a new one (maximum size), formatted it with NTFS quick and the setup went along just fine. It automatically restarted, showed my BIOS info, then the Windows XP Home logo. After the logo disappeared I thought I did it. But instead of proceeding, the PC restarted again. And that's as far as I could go in the process. I tried another HDD but the same thing happened.

Interesting though, I must say that after creating a new partition, I pressed Enter for formatting options. Instead of giving me formatting options, a message came up basically telling me that I can't proceed with the setup because Windows Setup can't install Windows on the specified HDD. I ran Windows Setup again, pressed Enter to install Windows, and this time I was given my formatting options. This was really the only weird thing that happened in the entire Windows installation process. Everything else went normally.

I can't install Windows externally and can't boot from my USB HDD. But after booting up normally with my internal HDD, I can power up my enclosure and my system is able to detect my external USB HDD. Everything else works excellent from here.

So I know my PC is fine, my enclosure is fine, my internal and external HDDs are fine. So what do you think can solve my problem?

I appreciate your time. I hope to hear from you soon. Thank you very much in advance.

Best,

FrederickYour bios need to support booting from usb devices in order for that to work. If it's able to do that there should be an option for it in the bios where you set the boot order.

But why do you even want to boot from an external device? To me that just doesn't make any sense. Your computer is going to be slow because the usb connection is not as FAST as your internal hdd connection. Instead you should use your internal hdd to boot and then use the external for storage.Although in general, it is possible to boot from a USB device, floppy, pen drive, HDD in enclosure, etc, and you can do it with MS-DOS and Linux, Microsoft have intentionally disabled Windows from installing on an external HDD. It just won't work. A collection of limitations (both hardware and software) PREVENT Windows from booting and running off a USB drive. One reason is that during any hot-plug operation, the USB bus is completely reinitialized. Windows really doesn't like it when it loses access to its boot device. Imagine, you plug in a USB camera, the USB bus reinitializes, Windows loses access to the boot drive, and *oops* the kernel needs to page in some data and it can't.

I knew it. I tried every imaginable way to make it work but it just won't. I now see that Windows simply doesn't allow it. I suspected this to be the case but I had to make sure from an expert. I'll have to be contented with using my external HDD as a backup and storage device.

Thanks guys.

FrederickGrab a Coffee and Have a Read...Very interesting. Windows would have to run without a pagefile! In the forum, the poll "Did this work for you?" had 50% "yes" and 50% "no" (Grand total of 4 votes). Seems like some hardware works, some doesn't.

This is very much like putting a BartPE disk on an HDD.

I did have success with it the last time i fooled with it but it was indeed a struggle.
Don't REMEMBER whose enclosure it was because i've since sold it but it was a Western Digital HDD...Thanks patio for the guide. I need to set aside some time in advance before taking this on. I know I can make it work.

I appreciate all the support. You're Welcome...stop by anytime.Today I put a BartPE XP disk onto a 1 GB pendrive which was a breeze.

Solve : WANT TO CONVERT 5.25 FLOPPU?

Answer»

I come across some old 5.25 floppy that I would like to SAVE. I checked my BIOS9(thinking I could add a 5.25 drive) but It shows as only supporting 3.5 floppy. Does any body know of a way I can convert these to a format that I can use?
I rUN WINDOWS 98SE with an intel mother boardWell first of all you'll need a computer that supports the 5.25 drive, if that computer also have a 3.5 drive you can just copy the floppies to 3.5 diskettes.Yea I know but most computers now DAYS don't support 3.5 floppy let alone 5.25I'm skeptical about the notion that a computer that recognizes a 3.5" floppy drive will not recognize a 5.25" drive but it may be true. Anyway, if you want to pursue this, you might buy a 5.25" drive on ebay and try installing it. Quote from: bac0926 on July 25, 2007, 08:36:13 AM

You heard of one now - my Shuttle ST62K which I bought in 2005 has no floppy header on the motherboard, and it was not the only such PC on the market.

It is a very small size PC, and I guess they did everything they could to save space. I am happy to use bootable pen drives, I bought a 1 GB pen drive today for £6.99 in UK money, that's about $14 US.
I STAND corrected then. I've never had much interest in these MICRO form factors, too few upgrade options. Quote from: Deerpark on July 25, 2007, 11:40:22 AM

I spent 10 years upgrading PCs... You always end up with a hodge podge of old and new. I am not a gamer so I don't need an AGP slot, 2 hdd bays and an optical are enough storage, the P4 3.0 GHz HYPERTHREADING cpu and 1 GB RAM are still OK for my needs... I'll put all the upgrade money I saved up towards another PC maybe next year.

Solve : Minor, physical, annoying problem in my keyboard! Help??

Answer»

I spilled milk on my keyboard mildly... I tried tipping my keyboard upside down, and surprisingly, it drained a lot of it out. Eventually, my right CTRL key became stuck, so I removed it, and some surrounding keys, and eventually got it working fine again... I am very picky. While putting my right SHIFT key back in, after noticing there's a little metal rod that's shaped like a staple, and in fact TWO rubber "buttons" because the shift key is horizontally longer than a normal key... Ever since I took it out, I don't think I really know HOW to put it back in... It just NEVER seemed to be working right. Currently, the problem is I have to hit the RIGHT side of the shift key in order for it to register... the right button underneath it. I feel like a noob, but oh well! I don't think the shift key is pressing down as "one", basically. It will only hit one button underneath it if I press too far to the left... they shouldn't do that.

Hopefully I explained it well enough.Don't cry over Spilled Milk!

http://www.spilledmilk.com/ (PG-13)Save a lot of time and frustration and buy a NEW keyboardLmfao. Is it really that difficult? It's not stuck by milk, I just apparently can't seem to put it back on right so I don't have to keep hitting one side of the shift key to hit only one of the buttons to make it WORK...Ditto Karnac. Keyboards are cheap and it's not worth the pain, especially if you are that picky

Thank you! I will go ahead and try it sometime... and post a reply again if it doesn't seem to get the job done. Or I'll just get a new keyboard... don't really wanna dish out money I don't have to, though, over something small and minor.Take the keyboard into the shower and rinse it out with hot water. Give it a couple of days to dry out. You should look into using this kind of keyboard if you have issues with liquid substances For any keys that are bad, just use the on screen keyboard and your mouse.
Kind of like text messaging.

Solve : Can't read old compaq HD in box via new HP laptop?

Answer»

Hi, hope you all can help.

We finally got my Dh a nice HP laptop, Pavilion Dv7 the other day as his old Compaq desktop is ready to bite the dust. he took the Compaq hard drive out and put it into a acomdata 'shell'. Of course, he encrypted the HD ages ago when he got the computer incase it was ever stolen.

But we can't open files on the old hard drive now using the laptop to try and read the old drive. We can see the files names and folders, but in trying to open the files, it says we don't have access rights.

The old desktop is SITTING here STILL. Is there anyway to access the files w/out having to put the HD back into the old box. Is there anyway to un-encrypt the HD if we put it back in the old Compaq desktop?

I think that the old Compaq was using Windows 2000. New laptop is using Vista.

Many thanks!HTTP://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421&sd=techThanks for the link. I'll have to try Microsofts instructions again and play with it. The new laptop is on Vista and didn't respond to the actions I took. I still can't read the documents off the old HD. Maybe I need to read the instructions on how to do it for Windows 98 since I think that was what he was running when he encrypted the old HD.

Cheers!

Did you encrypt the drive using Windows 2000, or did you use the compaq hardware(if available), and depending on the method, eg, if you used Windows 2000, did you use some special SOFTWARE or SOMETHING that came with the computer?

Solve : Overheating CPU?

Answer»

I am having this problem since i installed my new Mobo.
I have checked all the fans and they are clean and working fine as is the heatsink for the CPU. i also reapplied thermal paste to the heatsink.
As this is a new Mobo i haven't been able to install windows but i found out the CPU was overheating as the PC kept shutting down and i accessed the BIOS and checked the CPU's temp it went all the way up to 90. C
The PSU i have has 750w of power and the CPU is an AMD 64 x2 Ahtlon Socket 939

Can anyone help please
ThanksDouble check the heatsink and thermal paste, also make sure the fans are working.Paste application might be the problem if too much is applied....follow these guidelines and see if you applied it OK.

http://www.arcticsilver.com/pdf/appinstruct/as5/ins_as5_amd_dual_wcap.pdfdone all those and STILL it overheats
Can the CPU be damaged in anyway even if i can access the BIOS ?
Ive had exactly the same problem with exactly the same components. The only way i got it to work was to buy a heatsink for a quadcore. Then when you put the new one in, with the thermal paste, leave over night before you turn it on. I also installed SpeedFan and turned up the RPM to about 55%. It works fine now!! But I had loads of trouble before I found this solution. Nothing seemed to work and I thought it was the cpu.hmm thx Reddevil
The problem for me obviously is to discover the source of the problem
i do not wish to buy unneccesary items
Well, the problem is overheating. I'm sure that thats the only way to keep the heat down. The heatsink I bought wasn't EXPENSIVE, maybe £25. I think there is no other way to solve this. Thanks i'll try that
The only reason I say that is because, like I said earlier, I had exactly the same problem. I was upgrade from an Athlon 64 to a Athlon 64 x2 and my mobo has Socket 939. I have a 750 watt PSU. I didn't even give me time to do anything except check the BIOS before it shut down. I tried everything I know of and posted on several forums, but to no avail. That is the only thing that worked for me
Hope it works for you too.

Good Luck.

RDgggBought new heatsink and fan and now the BIOS page will not LOAD so i cannot check at what temp the CPU is running with the new heatsink.
I end up with flashing cursor at the top LEFT on a blank screen
Faulty PSU?
Double check the memory is seated, in fact remove it and reseat it, then swap in a known good powersupply, check the video cards seating as well....check all connections too.Good on you Karnac...I watch, I listen, I learn.........Thanks Patio.

Solve : Could I get help please??

Answer»

Hello every!!
This is my first time on these forums, I GOOGLED for help and this was the first link, helpers sent from god...lol..

Ok here is the deal, I have a FX 5200 128MB AGP video card I am trying to intsall.
Here is the deal! I know the card works, just TOOK it out of another computer...

Here is what happens when I go into thew BIOS

When I click on Video options it just say Integrated and PCI

There is a jumper on the motherboard, right under the jumper it says CMOS, I took it off and I went into the Bios and it said for video options Integrated/PCI/AGP, I have a AGP option now. When I picked that option and hit F10 to save and restart I went back into the Bios and it was gone, just said PCI/Integrated... I put the jumper back on and it showed up again, and again I choose AGP and hit F10 again and again it disappeared...
I can't get this thing to install..
I have it plugged into the mobo and the fan on the video card is running...
I try to install the drivers for it and it says it can not detect the proper hardware and will now close...
I also tried to disable the on board in device manager and uninstall the drivers for it in add/remove..
Thanks for any help, I really appreciate it...

Here is what everest says about my computer....

Solve : hard drive tick tocking?

Answer»

Does any one know how to CRASH your hard drive and start all over. I have a really BAD bug and the only way to get rid of it is to crash my hard drive. And I think it would easier and CHEAPER if I do it myself. This is KNOWN as the "clik of death" ...the HDD is dying.
If you want any hope of retrieving the data from it stop using it immediately.
You may only get one CHANCE to backup your stuff...

Solve : Clicking, Crackling and Popping sounds during mp3 playback.?

Can not read my own writing.

Can you install the k-lite codec pack, and then see of your other media programs work?

I already had it installed when I noticed MPC would play mp3 files. However I uninstalled it, and when I tried to install again I got that error message "Invalid floating point operation". After a couple of tries I was able to run the installer (have no idea why). Now that all the audio is going through ffdshow audio DECODER I can hear all my mp3s and videos. I wonder if I could get winamp to run through ffdshow. I think maybe it could be windows Fraunhoffer decoder that's making all that noise.

I noticed in the DevMgmt window that I have all these new audio codecs. I used to have only Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 Codec, now I see another one with the same name but it ALSO says (Professional) v3.3.2 and I also have LAME ACM Codec v3.98.2 among others. Maybe if I set priority for the Lame codec or the professional? Or delete windows Fraunhofer?

I'm still having some video issues with divx and xvids. Sometimes the screen will go black, and when I pause it the image will come back, so I press play and I can watch it again. I think I'm going to try running them through the ffdshow video decoder, because I had the divx and xvid codecs installed, instead of the ffdshow.
Anyways, thanks for all of your comments. This has been REALLY helpful.Quote

*censored*... that's what I thought. Any suggestions for narrowing down the problem?well- could be a bad download-

I take it it appears "randomly" and often trying to run that same program a few times works successfully?

Could be a problem with the PROCESSOR or motherboard;

Nope. Everything is running at it's DEFAULT speed. I'll try the test later and see what I get. Have to go now.
Again, thanks for everything guys! There are some known issues with AMD dual-core. But you would think that that would not relate to the problem here.

Solve : My LAN Router?

Answer»

I have 4 computers and they are using LAN. I have a modem and i have used it to access the internet before but now it doesn't work!? On the 4 computers that are linked to the router i have accessed the internet before so im SURE it must be the modem because my Internet browser says there is a PROBLEM with my router, but i don't know what it is.. I've tryed turning the modem off and turning it on agin but nothing happens... Ive taken the plugs out and put them back in to see if it works but no success.. Does anyone have any ideas? Have you checked to see if your computers are getting IP addresses from the router? If your computer is set for DHCP....

Try this:
1. go to command prompt.
2. type "ipconfig /all"
3. CHECK to see if you are getting an ip address from the router, and check to see if your router is set as the gateway.

Quote from: van0005 on May 04, 2009, 07:12:05 PM

If you are getting an error message saying there is a problem with the router why would you think the problem was with your modem?

Have you tried to hook one of the PC's DIRECTLY to the modem to see if it will connect?Turn off the computers, then modem, then router. Turn them on in reverse order. What happens?

Alan <>< if there's a problem with your router then it's not your modem. I've actually used my internet modem by directly connecting it to my computer but then i can't give internet to my other computers

Solve : Sound Volume Fluctuations?

Answer»

Some time when I am listening to music on my computer (which I LOVE doing often) I find that the sound level fluctuates. This is very annoying but I have NEVER been able to figure out what is causing it.

This has happened to me on a COUPLE of different computers so I don't think it is a hardware (or software) issue. I have just put up with it, but there must be a solution for this problem.

Has anyone else experienced this and is there a solution? On your PC do you have a sound card or embedded sound?Does this happen during the song or is the sound level different for different SONGS?
I am using a Creative SB X-FI Xtreme Audio Sound Card.

The sound level alters between quiet and loud randomly in the middle of a song. some days it will play a few songs fine but then other days the volume seems to constantly fluctuate between two sound levels.

If I had to guess I would say the the voltage to the sound card varies, but if so I don't know how to fix it.You might TRY pull your sound card and allow the onboard sound to take over to see if the card is the issue. You may have to reinstall the motherboard drivers.Does it does this with any mp3s or just specific ones? In other words maybe those mp3s are faulty or corrupt? You may want to run Everest to check if everything is running ok on your comp, including power.

Solve : windows xp hardware?

Hello everyone

I am having a problem with my dvd rom, I can burn a dvd but when it comes to copying it, it continues to say insert a blank DISC. Well, I put a blank disc in and it continues to say the same thing. Is there anything that can be done WITHOUT charging me any money. Because I don't have any to purchase anything at all.The first thing to try would be UPDATING you DVD ROM drivers.

Just TYPE your DVD Rom brand (model as well if you know it) into google to find the latest driver

e.g. Type in "LG DVD ROM drivers"

if you need to find out the model number right click on My Computer select manage then click on device manager and expand the DVD/CD ROM Drivers section. What program are you using to copy the DVD's?Have you tried different blank CDs? MAYBE from another brand also?

Ugggggh, IRRITATING problem.

I have a Maxxis Basics 500GB hardrive which I use to store my music & videos, my PC is a Dell Dimensions 9100 (fair old) running Windows XP, Service Pack 2. I have a problem playing my music files (not tried vids yet) through WMP, I can't seem to play them through WMP if I GO to artist and play ETC yet if I go to Local Disk (E:) via My Computer and play the files through here, still using WMP they come on fine.

Any ideas folks? Any help much appreciated, thanks in advanced! Is this external hooked up to a front USB port ? ?
If so switch it to the rear.Sounds like this could be a software problem rather than hardware. Are you using the LATEST WMP VERSION? Have you tried video by now?

No man not the cookies, history and all that, the method you have suggested is only for the temporary files, i follow the procedure that you're talking about. But what i am asking is for the index.dat files which can REVEAL our whole browsing history even after we delete the temporary files. hope you got it.
Rolling your eyes and using sarcasm is a sure way to get a quick response. Probably not the one you want though.

If you are in such a hurry, use Google. I did and found several articles.stop using IE and switch over to FF, then under "Tools" ya can set it to clear all this stuff when ya close FFDownload CCleaner.deleting index.dat files can easily be facilitated through deletion of the index.dat files. His dilemna is even if he follows all the suggestions whoever is is wanting to hide the info from knows how to retrieve it from the index.dat files.....

Solve : Sound isn't working, please help :)?

Answer»

About 4 days ago, I went to unplug my speakers from my computer to hook my ipod up to them. when I went to plug them back in a few hours later, I realized my sound no long worked. The speakers work fine (I tested them), I even tried hooking the sound up to my monitor (which is actually a HD tv, so the speakers are built in, which also work) and still no luck.

All drivers are working properly, with the nice like green check marks next to all my drivers. I also tried to update my drivers to see if that would help, no luck. My sound is not on mute, and its even registering on my computer that sound is being played (such as I play itunes, and the green sound BAR goes up and down).

OS: Windows Vista x64-based system
Sound card... no idea. I'm assuming it is built into my motherboard because its not giving me an EXACT name, but I updated the drivers again so everything is up to date.

I also found this, thinking this could be my problem.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937077

However, whenever I try to download it (both the genuine version and the x64 version) it says that "the update does not apply to your system"...

Ho hum. I hope someone can help!

To start with the basics.. have you accidentially damaged your audio jack?I actually was just thinking that after I posted this, but how would i know if I have damaged it or not?

I have my headset plugged in, and that seems to work just fine, so if that were the case it would only be the sound jack.

**edit** the mic on my headset works, not the actual earphones though. sorry, should have been clear on thatSo your headphones work but speakers don't?Try this it will help you, i think:
Go to Start menu and chose Run, write this command:
services.msc, press enterIn new window on the right panel find Windows Audio and double click on it, when you see the new window under Windows Audio Properties in page General down to the Startup type make shore it is Automatic and in the part Services status click on Start than Apply, OK and the problem is solved.
Cheers.went to the services.msc, the windows audio properties was set to the automatic and was started. I even turnned it off, started it back up again and restarted my computer. still nothing >.<

and yes, the mic still works, the jack for the mic is right next to the audio one as WELL too. Do you get sounds through your internal speakers?? If it's a laptop of course...
i run on a desktop, so I don't have internal speakers.Do headphones work?the headphones, speakers, connection cords and my monitor (that has speakers built in... its actually a 22" HD tv) all work fine, no defects. I have tested all of them, it isnt the external devices and I'm almost positive on that one. vista, Go to start, Click control panel, then choose hardware and sound,Then choose sound,Under playback there should be a green check mark on the Realtek High Definition Audio, and should say working.

Click once on the speaker picture, Now choose the option configure in the bottom LEFT of window pane, then from the options pick quadraphonic, then click next and make sure that the options front left and right and surround speakers are checked, then click next and finish.

find the audio device icon, so what to do is go back to control panel, sound and under the playback tab, it told me that 'no audio devices are installed' and so i 'right click' and select/check 'show disabled devices' and the audio device icon appear and then i just enable it and it work again. so hope that help.
as soon as I tried that, still didnt work... until i heard a "ding" noise my computer makes when I reset something!

SUCCESS! it works again! thank you so so much :-DJust click on my thank button lol glad I helped mate

Solve : New HDD, old problem?

Answer»

Hello CH.

I recently purchased a Seagate HDD. Upon start up after I connected it, I get this error message:

PXE-E61 - Media TEST Failure, check CABLE
Exiting Boot Agent

I checked my BIOS to see if it recognized my HDD, and it did.
I had put in my OS disk for Windows XP, and had no success.

I have searched through similar posts and found no real solution. Does anyone have any suggestions?SATA or IDE ? ?
Regardless replace the data cable.
Then run the Seatools diagnostics on it to PREPARE the drive for use...
If you didn't get a CD with the drive they are available FREE from the website...Maybe boot order....It's an SATA.

Is the Seatools diagnostics on the CD I got with the HDD?(nevermind, lol)

(Already checked boot order too.)yep
The data cable seems to work with the other drive I am using, should I still replace it?

Also, I do not think Seatools will HELP if I cannot boot to Windows using my new HDD...Hard drives do not come with Windows installed on them...this has to be DONE manually.
Plus if the drive shipped un-formatted (many do ) Windows will not see it until it's formatted. That's what the seatools do...Try this...Right-click My Computer / choose Manage / choose Disk Management. Do you see the hard drive there? If so then you'll need to 'initialize' it for Windoze to be able to use it.

So I will need to connect both HDDs in order to use Seatools on the non working HDD?No.
The SeaTools CD is bootable...Thank you for all of your help. I'm not exactly sure how, but I was finally able to solve the problem.

Somehow I started getting a new error message:
PXE-E56: No boot filename recieved

So after a little research, I read about how disabling my PXE in BIOS could stop the error. After a couple of trial and errors, I was finally able to partition the drive after disabling the floppy and eathernet in the boot configuration.

Solve : Questions about my new laptop.?

Answer»

Hi,

I recently lost my last laptop, but since I'm really lucky to get a new one and want to be informed enough I thought of posting my configuration here.
I don't really know if this is the right board to ask this, so here it goes.

I basically want to use this laptop for mainly audio synthesis and manipulation (Ableton, Wavelab, PureData, Fruity Loops etc.)

Here's a link in Dutch about specifications.
Here's the translation in English.
Basically, it's a modified Clevo barebone (about which I've heard good things).

I have it configured with the following:

XXODD XNi860tu 15”

* Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000 (2,00Ghz, 1066Mhz, 6Mb) Inclusief Game-pack!
* 4GB DDR3 1066MHz geheugen (2x 2GB)
* 128GB SATA Solid State Drive (<<< Have to find out whether it's SLC or MLC)
* DVD-CD +/- burner
* No Intel Turbo Memory module (<<< I'm planning on using 64bit XP for compatibility purposes and 64bit Ubuntu/Xubuntu as main if I get compatibility going with my audio programs. Hence, I don't really see why I would get this.)
* Intel 5300AGN 450Mbps WLAN (3 antennes)
* No Flash Drive (<<< Can be installed in the ExpressCard slot, but I rather not go for extra storage. What other cool things can be placed there?)
* No OS
* No Office 2007 applicatiesoftware
* No Windows Live OneCare 2.0
* 3 jaar pick up & return garantie
* No extended pixelcontrole
* QWERTY (US, internationaal)

All that for € 1.995,00 (which is about 2,648.26 USD).

Other questions:
1. Now I'm convinced that the quadcore is superior to the dualcore for my purposes, but what does it really mean that it's clocked on 2,00GHz: Is every core on 2,00GHz or is the 2,00Ghz distributed over 4 cores?
2. 15" WSXGA+ resolution 1680x1050 > does this mean that it's 16:9 widescreen ratio and I can watch widescreen movies without getting used to those streched heads?
3. As I've come to understand, CPU+RAM+Mainboard are clocked on 1066Mhz, but didn't laptop mainboards had some kind of a bottleneck in bandwidth speed?

Questions to ask 2 XXODD (you can of course recommend me more questions):
- Which components can I replace/add without voiding my warranty? (< sending e-mail )
- Solid State Drives, MLC/SLC? Is it also POSSIBLE to get 64GB? (< MLC)
- Does the laptop have a CardBus interface? PCMCIA interface?
- IEEE1394 Firewire, 4pins / 8pins? (< IEEE1394a Firewire port, so that means 4pins)
- Is it possible to return the laptop to a local dealer in case of malfunction? (< yes if they can help the problem, if not the laptop gets shipped to main distributor)
- Is it possible to get the laptop with an enlarged Enter-button?

I thank you dearly in advance for answering my questions and vaporizing my doubts, as I'm not really savvy about these kinds of things.

1. This means 2.0GHz each core
2. yes it is a widescreen ratio
3. Not exactly. the CPU and RAM FSB are exactly the same, meaning there should be little, or no bottle neck. What I get the most is hard drive bottlenecking, as I run IDE drives still...*sigh* but yous should notice minimal bottleneck.

You should add:
- How many USB ports
- What games are included in the 'Inclusief Game-pack!'

other than that I think you have it covered

I've spoken to the support phoneline but they were dodgy about the question whether or not it was cool if I would replace the RAM or SSD storage without voiding my warranty. After asking through I found out that if in the case of (hardware) malfunction they narrow the problem down to my own piece of hardware, the maintenance would be performed on behalf of my expenses (which I find rather logical and fair, but still not fulfilling enough to be called a valid answer to my question).

Oh well, I guess these kinds of questions are best asked if written, so I'll just go AHEAD and send them an e-mail.
What can eventually be added to my list of questions2ask is:
- Is it possible to get the laptop with an enlarged Enter-button?

Also, not really related but, is it possible to get a USB or Firewire device which captures the coaxial signal coming from TV ?
I have a Pinnacle Studio MovieBox PLUS 710 but I have to have bloaty Pinnacle software to capture anything

Thanks for helping out!I'm wondering, if I get loose components with each their own warranty, and assemble the machine myself, I'll still be able to maintain at least some sort of support from the manufacturers but would have a greater control and a sense of ownership.

At least, that's what concerns desktop computers, but is it also possible with laptops? Are there places where I can buy loose components and a barebone (in Europe) ?There's not many "loose" components you can add to a laptop without risking Voiding the warranty...
What components did you have in mind ? ?Quote from: patio on May 04, 2009, 12:07:32 PM

What components did you have in mind ? ?

Well actually pretty much everything, just like (with a desktop) you get an ATX case, mainboard and the needed components, only this time doing so with a laptop. Not sure what you mean here...Simply put: I just want to assemble my own laptop just like you would assemble a desktop (using VARIOUS components from various retailers).

By doing that I won't have a collective warranty anymore, but instead a warranty on each component, which I think is more educational as well as more controllable.Sorry and i'm not trying to discourage you but assembling a laptop is not very easy to do as the components are hard to find and the advantages over just purchasing one are virtually nonexistent.I thought 2GHz Core 2 Quad meant the 2GHz was split up among the 4 cores. No that means it is 4 cores, running at 2GHz each

so therefore it can process a lot more than a single or dual core at 3 GHz, as long as the program can utilize them.Quote from: patio on May 04, 2009, 03:56:49 PM

No that means it is 4 cores, running at 2GHz each

so therefore it can process a lot more than a single or dual core at 3 GHz, as long as the program can utilize them.
Yes and programs like Ableton Live can utilize all 4 cores at full muhahaha
Also there are not a lot of games which perform faster on a quadcore but there are some benchmarks.

Solve : New BFG GeForce 260 GPU not working?

Answer»

I just bought a BFG GeForce 260 GPU. Everything else in my computer is compatible, except for one piece (i believe) my PSU. My power supply is an APEVIA ATX-AS520W found here:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817148008

I unplugged everything from my comp except for the cpu, ram, psu, and new vid card. The GPU takes a six pin power connector which splits into two 4-pin molex connectors. I connect everything, turn the computer on, and get a POST beep of 1 long, 3 SHORT, pause, 1 short. I then take out my new VIDEO card, PUT back in my 7600 GT XXX vid card, and it WORKS fine. mobo is ASUS M2N-SLi. My question is: is my PSU capable of running this card? I would think that it is because its a 520W, and the minimum for this card is 500W. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. do you have another computer, with at least a 500w PSU, that you can test the video card on?

I totally agree with you, i have had no prolbems with dual core, even though i have been told by so many people that there are problems.
Vista and x-box 360 are atcually the only platforms this game runs on, so vista is an absolute.

Any ideas on building my own system, i have never DONE it before? is it hard or COMPLICATED?
I think it's alot easier than people make it out to be. Most things are actually color coded for you. Things will usually only fit into one spot. The most difficult part about building a system is finding out the best BANG for your buck, and making sure everything is compatible if you ask me. Things LIKE SEATING RAM and video cards couldn't be much easier, just line them up and set them in.

I'm sure if you make check that all the parts are compatible (things like motherboard/processor and the right number of pins on your ram) with each other and come back here for pointers everybody here would be more than happy to give your pointers on building your system, assuming they don't do that already.

There's also a few guides if you snoop around google for a bit. That is probably true,
but then again is it easy enough for someone who only changes RAM and GPU's in a computer.
Like i only know realy basic things.
Do they usually come with some sort of instructions?
and where would i buy the motherboard on its own and the other parts.

thanksHi

motherboards are all over the net and most of the parts, so it wont be difficult for you to build one as most of the instructions can be downloaded from the net too. Make sure to buy compatible pieces e.g the processor should fit in the mainboard(motherboard), the RAM should have same pins as on the board (DDR2,DDR3), the rest will fit perfectly in other holes ( ),

One more thing before you start with your grocery (research)

Happy shopping dayWell, sounds like a plan.

Solve : Pioneer DVD-RW Drive not reading.?

Answer»

Windows XP Pro. SP 2. (Legit)
Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-112D is the drive. Purchased from Best Buy.

When I put Battlefield 2 disk 1 in the drive and I wait nothing happens. I went to My Computer to see if it showed up there, still didn't show up. The disk is good because it works in my other computers. I have tried other CD's/DVD's still same thing. Here is screen SHOT of some info that may help. Hopefully this is ENOUGH to help FIGURE this out because I am not good with computers.

http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a27/primoadamp/?action=view&current=CD-Drive.jpgIf you're having problems with all disks, it's possible the drive is dying, the lens needs cleaned, or the cable is not hooked up properly.

Try testing the drive in another computer and with a different cable.

Get a lens cleaner.

You didn't mention if this drive is new or how old it is. If you've just purchased it and can't get it to work in the current computer or any other, I would immediately return it and get a different drive, that way may be defective.primoadamp,Welcome to CH forums.I notice something from your supplied "screen Shot". Your DVD drive "E" shows no bytes used and no bytes available (whereas your CD drive "D"does show values for both). Do you get those same absence of values for the DVD when you place a blank recordable disk in the drive? It does appear that the device is being seen by your computer (but not properly). Did you always have 2 optical devices in that computer or is the DVD a recent add on?Did you configure the JUMPER cables to properly reflect the position of this drive in reference to the other CD drive? Where is it located on the cable connection--1st or 2ND connector?Do you have "auto detect" selected in the BIOS for these optical drives? As much as i often see many reply to these types of errors with a statement of a hardware failure (even new out of the box) it has been my personal experience over many years of pulling apart and adding and deleting hardware i have NEVER had the ultimate solution related to a faulty piece of hardware. Don't get me wrong i am sure it does happen--maybe i am just superbly lucky (though i doubt it). I have found that the vast majority of TIMES it is a software issue related to the device and it's compatibility with something. Have you called Pioneer on the telephone to get their input?good luck, truenorth

also is there anyway i can check if it is overheating.I would say you are having overheating issues.
Check out this page to help you clean out the insides of your PC, which should help stop it overheating.

P.S. welcome to the forums.Quote

I would say you are having overheating issues.
I agree. Video converting programs heat computer up.
My IDLE temps are around 20C, but, when I'm using video converting program, they shoot up to around 50C.hi thanks for your help.
i had pc in shop a few months ago when it wasw overheating very seriously as pc was on 24 7 and i only used to convert and burn. the whole inside pc was totally replaced as it was under warranty,pc was perfect when it came back from shop.as far as i know it is not overheating TOWER is cool whereas before tower used to get redhot all the time. SOMEBODY advised it could be my memory but i have 2 gig and as far as i know it is ok.thanksI dont think it has something to do with your memory. But if you want to try it out, reseat ONE memory at a time and try running the program.

Try also touching your videocard or processor fan if ever you ran the program and your pc switches off.Did you follow the instructions?
It won't be your RAM if it just turns off when video converting, you'd likely be getting other errors and BSODs.
Turning off indicates overheating.

Solve : Jumping Mouse?

Answer»

My computer is an XP.

I have been having this problem for quite a while.

My mouse randomly jumps from one part of the screen all the way to another.

I think it is a virus, worm, spam, or whatever, but I do not see anything online.

One time when I was in the running programs, I spotted a program that popped in and out of the list called "drag." It was the weirdest thing I've ever seen.

I do believe I had this problem some time ago and did find it was something on my machine and got it removed. I cannot for the life of me figure it out now.

I've these teenage sons that won't obey and my gut feeling is that they've got something on the machine again. I spend so many hours a month fixing things they screw up.

Maybe it isn't a bad file. I am open to other suggestions.

We even went and bought a brand new mouse and it still happens to this mouse.

I've tried changing the speed of the mouse options, but that does not help.Print these instructions out.

Solve : Computer won't boot to bios?

Answer»

I built my computer about 2 years ago. My computer is ABIT AN8 32X 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI X16 ATX AMD Motherboard with GeForce 7900GTX 512MB 256-bit video card, CORSAIR XMS 1GB DDR SDRAM DDR 400 memory, OCZ 700w GameStream Power Supply and Win XP Pro.
WELL this system has been running fine for weeks then 3 days ago I tried to turn it on and it wouldn't boot. It starts and runs fine but it won't boot to the bios. It just stops. I have tried to clear the CMOS but that didn't seem to HELP at all. I've done all the try each component and it won't boot with ANYTHING.
Not sure if it might be that the motherboard went bad? I'm fairly knowledgeable about computers but I definitely don't know it all, FAR from it. Hope someone here might have some ideas of what to check or if you agree that it might be the motherboard.
Thanks so much.
Nancyphysically detatch all hard drives except the primary (where your OS is installed) unplug your cd/dvd drive too.

power up and tell us if it does the same thing.

Are you hearing any noise at all?

or is it powering up ok and just not posting?

Any wierd beeps?

The more info the betterYeah I think this is the problem I'm having.
Mine beeps once, then beeps six times.
Should I unplug everything and turn it on while everything's unplugged? I'm not sure what you mean.deadudea

Solve : Laptop won't turn on, is power cord broken??

Answer»

My laptop shut off this MORNING and will not come back on. Last night it was sitting on a couch and was heating up a lot, but it operated fine and shut down normally. This morning my roomate was using it on another surface that causes it to heat up. Both it and the power cord were significantly hot. She tells me that it shut down spontaneously and will not turn on again. No lights, no response, nothing. She gave it nearly an hour to cool, to no avail. It is not taking a charge, its power lights won't come on when plugged in. My roomate TOLD me that it didn't appear to be taking a charge while it was STILL running today, but she's not sure if it died from a LOW battery or if it burned out. My computer has never really done something like this before. It overheated once before and came back an hour later, and it was able to charge while turned off.

Does this sound like a problem with the power cord and not the computer? I wasn't there when it shut down and I don't have the details. Does anyone know if there's a way to tell whether or not my power cord is broken and the computer is just on a dead battery?try a new batterybefore trying a new battery, i would use a voltmeter and test to see if you are getting the correct voltage OUTPUT on your charger. also, are you sure the receptacle that you plugged your charger into is working? by receptacle i mean the wall plug.I tried several outlets that are working for other appliances, so that's not the problem. It's completely unresponsive. I don't know what a voltmeter is or how I would use one. I don't want to go out and buy a new charger only to find out that the computer itself is broken.

The computer is about 5 years old, but has had its HD recently replaced. It has given me no real problems until now. Is it normal for a computer to completely die in an instant like this? Any help would be really greatly appreciated.Unfortunately sounds to me as if one of the boards (e.g. internal power converter board) has failed or gone bad in the computer. To resolve this issue you'd need to have the laptop serviced and fixed.

Not normal of course, but definately can occur. I've actually dealt with several dozen laptops that have encountered this issue in the past.

Solve : System Monitor temps.?

Answer»

I have nivdia system monitor on my computer, My CPU temp Is 45C or 113F, GPU Is..51C 123F, system temp is 29C.. 84F. Anyone know If these temps are to high? They SEEM high to me. They seem fine, but your CPU temp is a little high if that's idle. Then again, there is a BUG in some software that causes the Wolfdale CPU temperature to be read 10C higher than it is.
However, what you should do is run a demanding app, such as a stress test, benchmark or game, for a while, and then check your temperatures again.Ok, I am going to install crysis. That should stress It hay! I also could run my call of Duty. How can I bring these temps down. More fans, I have 4 In my antec 900 case, not counting power supply fan cpu so on.Well, first you need to see if they're actually high.
There's no sense adding even more fans if the temperatures are acceptable, all that will happen is that the PC will make more noise.
Run the Crysis benchmark a few times and then post back with your temperatures.
I recommend using Orthos to stress your CPU and Core Temp to monitor the temperatures (MAY need an offset).
And for the GPU, I recommend using Rivatuner or the Nvidia monitor to check the temps and ATITool to stress it to the max.ok, I will get back with ya on this...... It's almost fun time.... WORK.....MINE are running 47, 38 & 44 C. You can check what your normal temps are here.
http://www.gen-x-pc.com/cputemps.htmmine are running about in the low 40's also on the antec case I know that you can crank up the fans on it a friend of mine has that same caseThats what I am worried about my fans are on high.
right now my temps just reading stuff here at ch are the cpu-109 gpu-145 motherboard 99 hdd 104 all degree FGuessing about Temps can COST dangerous money...there is no watermark as all CPU's are different.
Best to consult your Owner's Manual and/or the manuf. site to be sure...
You may also want to DLoad and run another monitoring program to get a 2nd reading...SpeedFan works well.I just dloaded speedfan and it's great that I can adjust the fan speed I sometimes do have problems playing games so now all I have to do is turn them up

Solve : Help a guy out - No sound and Internet browser is acting up?

Ok, so I had a new mother board INSTALLED a month ago - shop gave me a disk for my reboot when it came TIME, so I went and wiped off windows and re-installed b/c there was a bunch of stuff going on with the computer, so after the install I now have no sound, and when I'm on IE the computer has a really hard time scrolling up and down, you can visually watch as it refreshes each line as it goes downt he screen. Videos play fine, (no sound) - so I dont know what to do. Any suggestions? I havent called the shop yet b/c I wanted to try to fix it myself. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks

click Start then Run and type in Devmgmt.msc and click OK
This will take you into DEVICE Manager. If you SEE a yellow "!" next to any of your devices then you need a driver for that device.
Your computer may have came with a drivers disk. It might say something like: Drivers and Utilities or something similar.
If you don't have a drivers disk then the best place to get them is from your computer manufacturers website. check that out and see if they have a driver download page.I found yellow errors with the "other devices" and it is the ones that control sound, communications and VIDEO. Any suggestions? I dont have the original reboot disk with the drivers, i have a new one that was made for me when my new mother board was put it, and he didnt put those drivers on the disk.Visit your MBoard manufacturers site and grab the MBoard drivers.
You didn't mention whose board it is or Links may have been posted. The guy that installed your motherboard should have run the drivers disk. He at least should have given it to you after the install. Is this guy claiming to be a professional?
Do you know the brand of motherboard you have now?He must have missed something on the disk he made me. Once I found the yellow ?'s I went in and had windows search for drivers to update it through da interwebs and it worked. I got sound, I got better video quality, and my interent is not slow as fawk. Thanks for the help guise. Good News...
But in future don't rely on Windows to update/install Device drivers.....always go to the manuf. site for the right ones/

I've spent so many hours on this I am banging my head against the desk...

Situation: I BOUGHT a DVD burner cause my old one is dying. That one had no problem playing DVD Videos. This one will play CD's and Burn DATA dvd's but balks at the Videos. I have a Fujitsu Lifebook Eseries pentium 4 running XP, radeon IGP 340m graphics card
the DVD burner is an External I/O Magic 20X DVD RW http://www.iomagic.com/Products/show_all_results.asp?ProdID=IDVD20DLE

I get numberous Error messages when I try to play them:

  • Windows Media Player 11 says, "Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card."
-I went to Fujitsu's website and they didn't have any driver newer than my old one.
  • Nero Showtime says something about CSS copyright protection
  • AnyDVD says the disk might be dirty or I might be in the wrong region
I was able to check the region and it is 1 just as it should be

I contacted I/O Magic and was given a key to download Power DVD. I did, and the program just freezes.
A friend said download VLC player. I did, and nothing happens when I try to play the dvd.
In my internet searches I found suggestions intended for other dvd burners with similar problems and tried downloading codecs which did not see any results.
There were suggestions of getting new firmware, and I tried using supplied software to do so, but I think it just freezes and doesn't do it's job.

I even tried pluggin into my roomates COMPUTER (he runs VISTA) and recieved the same error message in WMP.Bad drive out of box?My thought too

Solve : CD-ROM QUIT WORKING?

Answer»

Hello,

I have a Dell c610 notebook. Windows 2000 The cd-rom quit working.
(NEC DVD+RW ND-5100A) It will not read a disk.

I can't find an updated driver on the internet. I have unistalled, reinstalled, trouble shot, etc. Everything shows OK.

Took some advice to remove filters from reg. No filters SHOWED, so I did not delete anything. After doing a search, the upper filter was located a
few files down and the LOWER filter was located way down in the Enum folder in the Modem file. I don't know what that means or much about working in the reg.

But I recently switched from dial up to cable Internet, which was around the same time the cd-rom stopped working.

Could there be a connection, what is your advice on FIXING the problem?

The floppy disk drive module works fine when it is in the same slot.

Have you tried a CD-Cleaning disc to make sure the drive is clean?Win2K should not need drivers for any CD/DVD unit...
Remove the drive and use a flashlight to see if there are any obstructions or OBVIOUS damage...although this is unlikely since the floppy works.
Is it seated fully ? ?
How old is the drive ? ?
Unfortunately since it's a laptop drive the only way to test it properly is in another laptop of the same make.Is it listed in Windows Explorer/Device Manager? The Dell Latitude C610 was manufactured in 2001-2002. Being that the drive is over 6 years old, it has probably given up the ghost.

How is the rest of the computer holding up? If you really wanted to, there are places out there where you can older replacement CD drives. Then again, who knows... the whole system could go kaput next month.Quote from: quaxo on May 24, 2008, 10:01:57 PM

Yeah, I had a Toshiba Satellite laptop for 6 or 7 years. The screen FINALLY went out and I didn't bother replacing it, I just got a new laptop. 6 or 7 years... several liquids spilt on it and numerous drops. Surprised it lasted as long as it did

I think you've just been lucky, but then again it might just depend on the conditions the laptop gets used in. Who knows...well aside from the missing screws on the satellite Pro, and gaping hole in the side of my thinkpad, my laptops are gently used at best. They come in handy for when my main computer is too busy performing some maintenance task, so I can pass the time with some Mario Brothers or something.

I heard of gamecubes "failing" weeks after purchase. Apparently the owner wasn't very good at games and had a bad temper, often the leading cause of console mortality.

As per the laptop;

can it read factory discs? Audio CDs? etc. Try All sorts of Discs, my laptop was built in the old days of CD-ROM and has trouble with the new-fangled CD-RW, and can only read certain kinds of CD-R, but has no problem reading stamped CDs.

Hi there. I have a HP Pavillion a1620.uk with a psu of 300watts. I have just purchased an Nvidia GeForce 7600GT to replace my current 7300LE. The only reason is that im a PLAYER of The Sims 2 and have 6 expansions plus the original base game. I have been having crashing issues since day one due to my video card being so bad. Hopefully my new card will solve my problem but i need to upgrade my psu to at least 450watts. I really need some help with this...i know how to install a new graphics card and have done it before but i have no idea about psu's and all the numbers that surround them! My system specs are as follows :

Language: English (Regional Setting: English)

If you need any more INFORMATION in order to help me please let me know.
Thankyou!!

Psu are not that hard to fit. Just make sure that as you disconnect the cables that you make a note of where they go, that way when it comes to putting them BACK, you know where to put them. 450watt psu will be fine. But pay a little more and get a good one.Do i not need a certain one to fit into my tower? All the info LISTED about the computer is listed below. I think it's a micro tower.

I built this PC a year ago and is my 3rd build, so I installed all components. The fans are all SPINNING, but it doesn't seem like the fan on the heatsink is WORKING. it will spin and then stop and then try to spin. So I am wondering if my processor failed and/or the heat sink is fried. Can anyone help???it sounds like to me either the cpu is overheating or it's fried since the fan wasn't working right. I WOULD try and clean it out but more than likely the cpu is fried.is there usually a burned mark on the processor if it is fried? I am also hearing repeated bursts of power from the PS. I thought it was maybe the sink fan doing it, but it is the actual power supply.Quote from: brett74 on May 26, 2008, 06:25:22 PM

Sorry same problem to the same post!! Does it ring a bell Brett?

Sounds like it COULD be a bad power supply.

Solve : Widescreen Stretching Issues?

Answer»

I recently PURCHASED a new wide screen LCD monitor to replace my old and kaput CRT. I've run into a problem with running it at it's NATIVE resolution though. After installing the monitor's drivers, the only resolution options available on the display settings tab is for a 4:3 and 3:2 aspect ratios. This has forced me to use a 1280x1024 resolution that causes everything to stretch across the screen.

I realize that both my OS and HARDWARE are prehistoric, but my video CARD claims to support resolutions up to 1600x1200. So I'm left wondering, is this a limitation of my OS, or is it my video card that's preventing me from using a 16:10 aspect ratio?

If it is the video card, how do you know what cards support a widescreen monitor?

~James

Available Resolutions: 1280x1024, 1152x864, 1024x768, 848x480, 800x600, 768x576, 720x480, 640x480
Video Card: ATI XPERT 98
Monitor: Acer X193w - Native Resolution: [emailprotected]
OS: Windows 98SE
Motherboard: ECS Elitegroup P6VXA
CPU: 1Ghz Pentium III
RAM: 256MB
1600x1200 still represents 4:3 ratio.
Your video card needs to support wide screen resolutions:

These are standard screen resolutions:

Solve : Sound Issues/Video Controller Conflict ??

Answer»

Went to sound drivers for xp and based on my computer specs was prompted to download & install C-MEDIA driver 9739 .

Under Sound and Audio Devices Hardware :

C-Media AC97 Audio Device
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Media Control Devices
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Video Codecs

All of the above are working properly .

VIA AC'97 Audio Controller:

Yellow conflict symbol ; " this device cannot start " ( code 10 )

TRIED to update driver via automatic update & got the following message :

" not installed - windows can not find the NECESSARY softwear "

Does this mean i need to try re-installing the audio controller package and if so where do i go to get it . Softwear patch.com has a download pkg but warns that these are generic drivers and best option is to download from MB manufacture . But does that mean VIA Technologies or BIOSTAR ? Seems like i have been down this slippery slope before Re-installed VIA Vinyl Audio driver for audio controller . Windows kept asking me if i WANTED to replace certain files and i did . I did notice that the new downloaded files in some CASES were significantly larger which i guess is good . I still am getting the same message from device manager however regarding the audio controller not being able to start so obviously i am still missing something .

thanks Serial number won't do us any good. You need to know the brand and model of the card.

You could try Everest Home and see if that will tell you.

Additionally, the model number MIGHT be printed on the card itself.

The information your provided is only for the chipset, which could be used in 20 different products for all we know.Quote

where can we buy this product cause it is damage
So, you want to buy the same model card? Why does it need to be the same card?Quote from: soybean on JANUARY 11, 2008, 11:55:34 AM

Solve : Need help fixing my DVD/CDrom drive letters...?

Answer»

I have an old Compaq Presario WINME PC that still works well. But some conflicting driver SOFTWARE must have caused a system bug that confuses the CD/DVD drive letters so that I can't burn a CD using Easy CD Creator or play a DVD in WinDVD.

They SHOW up as working in the Device MANAGER and respond ok in My Computer. But when I try anything other than installing software the wrong trays open. I have resorted to all the quick fixes and they don't work. So I need an expert. Anyone? You might want to mention what "quick fixes" you've tried, so we don't give you reiterations of those.Try Here...

Like Dusty said, it all depends on what you rate as best.

I personally prefer gmail because it looks the same no matter where I am anywhere in the world (GIVEN internet access). I also like that gmail is able to hold over 6 gigs of emails, and can sort my emails into "conversations." Definitely something to check out, especially since it's free and virtually spam free. Why this?
