Solve : HDD cannot be defrag?

Answer»

My Backup Drive E: Cannot be defrag by windows... Everytime i'll try to defrag the volume a pop up shows (see attachment pic chkdsk1.jpg) and when when i run the chkdsk in the command prompt another message appear (see attachment pic chkdsk2.jpg)

The thing is that everytime i open up my PC the checkdisk utility always run EVEN before booting up to desktop eventhough i didn't SKIP the checking of drive previously.

And when i restart my PC.. the checkdisk utility is checking my Drive E: for errors eventhough i shut it down properly.

Hope for your response GUYS!

[file cleanup - saving space - attachment DELETED by admin]Assuming your running xp, goto the control panel and look under scheduled tasks. delete the task to run chkdsk. try defrag again.

Or you can just choose Y in screenshot 2 and re-boot the machine and let it run...
You have to be patient with utilities such as chkdsk and let them run til completion...interrupting the process can cause chaos. Thanks for posting screen shots. A picture is WORTH a thousand words!

Solve : Dual Monitor???

Answer»

I have a Radeon x1300 and my father had gotin a cable to ALLOW me to setup a second MONITOR, Where does the end of the cable go??? I pluged one end to the video card but does the other go to the VGA? The Blue Connector on the monitor I have both types of monitors. Is this connector only on newer monitors? I also have a flip device not sure if that will help. Please give us more info about the video card and the cable. Your GRAPHICS card should have 2 outputs on it if it can handle a dual monitor set up.

The cable from both monitors should be connected to the graphics card. If this is not possible you can't run dual monitors with this card.Okay, Was unsure of how to do it. Need another video card with the same connector then.

Solve : Slipstreaming XP home?

Answer»

i have misplaced my compaq recovery disks from compaq and was wondering if i can make a new one with the service pack 2 slipstreamed in? or, do i need to contact HP and see if they will send me replacement ones. i wont buy them though. the dang thing cost me too much anyway. it is a compaq presario 2100us. i would appreciate any links or instruction on how to back up my WINDOWS with that built in. also, is there a way to make a vista premium DISK from my new toshiba laptop with all the updates and leave out te garbage that toshiba installs on it. i tried to get rid of all the BS that came on this thing but in the END, my computer didnt see the cd rom and i couldnt use it. i even tried system restore all the way back to the beginning and it still didnt see it. thanks a million for the help and feel free to email me at [emailprotected]

EMail Addy removed to prevent SPAM.
Have you CONTACTED Compaq yet? Usually, companies like HP/Compaq, gateway, dell, etc will send you replacement disks... sometimes at a small fee, but better than being DEAD in the water.

Also, some of these companies actually put the "recovery disk" as a partition on the drive instead of as a cd...

Wasn't sure about the sound card and VIDEO card just what it said on it. The Hard Drive isn't seen in the BIOS and I changed the drive and the IDE cable and still nothing. Its jumper is set to master. When I connected it to an external HD connector I could see the drive. I tried removeing everything an putting it in a pc like it cards,HD,CD - ROM. The controller card or Ultra 100 had a bent pin, could this cause the problem?Yes. A bent pin will do this.
Is there an OS installed on this drive ?
Do the MBoard IDE connectors not work ?
Did this drive come from another machine ?

Sorry but we're still gonna need more info.No its a COMPLETE blank drive, but i had tried fone with an os on it 2k. No they work I just had the card for the 2 gb Maxtor witch I took off since I THINK its bad. Yes but I have 4 of these same machine I'm useing drives from the an hardware. I removed the card and no changes.Your response is practically incoherent.
What are you TRYING to say ? ?
Sorry I should have tried an explained better. The drive I want to use is blank. I tried useing one from a pc exatly like this one with 2k on it. The board IDE connectors work, I was useing the card for a 2 gb maxtor drive. I have four of the exact same pcs that i'm useing the hardware from.Throw the card out as it has a bent pin...
Take a sledgehammer to that Maxtor as it has been the source of most of your issues for sometime now...
DLoad and create a bootdisk from bootdisk.com for the OS you are trying to install on the blank drive...
At the A: prompt type in format C: /u and hit Enter to make sure that drive is wiped clean...
Remove the floppy...re-boot to the OS CD and install.Where is dload? I can't find knoppix on there.

Solve : Partitioning Hard Drive?

Answer»

i just got my new toshiba laptop with a 250 gig hard drive. the drive only shows 231gb though. anyway, i want to partition my hard drive so that i can install XP pro or possibly Linux. i figure 30gigs sounded GOOD. i installed the recovery disk because it has a partition program on it and after i partioned it and restored the OS, it showed my c drive at 200gb but the partition for the other 31 gigs wasnt there. so, i just performed a complete factory restore and i am up for any ideas on how i can get this done without having to recover the dang thing again and have to reinstall everything. Also, any ideas on my last post concerning Memory question is greatly appreciated. i want to know what is best, 2 gigs of ddr2 pc5300 or 3 gigs of ddr4200. i want to get the most out of this expensive thing. it is a satellite A215-S7472. i didnt know if more ram was better than having faster ram. THANKS for everything and all you guys input. So you have XP on the laptop now? Actual HDD sizes:

Chart Courtesy of WESTERN Digital.no, i have vista premium. thanks for the hard drive info also. anybody have any input on the memory issue i posted about. i THINK i will be better off with the 2 gigs of ddr2 pc5300. it says hypermemory on the chips. the others were a 1 gig chip and the other was a 2 gig chip. they werent the same brand. i researched and seen its better to install memory in identical PAIRS. i am still up for ideas. thanks for everything everybody.

Solve : Secondary Hard Drive installation, Detection but not properly?

Answer»

I installed a second hard drive. I put it on the same serial cable as FIRST hard drive. Bios detects hard drive. Windows XP DEVICE Manager ALSO detects it. But it detects an extra CD-ROM that I do not have. In My Computer there is an extra icon for an F: Drive and its detected as a CD-ROM. I have uninstalled both secondary hard drive and extra "GHOST" CD-ROM and then I have either tried to Add Hardware or I have restarted the computer. Either way both items are detected but the CD-ROM is the only item coming up in My Computer (and I, of course, cannot access it).Update:

I disconnected the serial cable to the second hard drive and restarted the computer. Windows still detects secondary cdrom device even though there is nothing physically connected (instant check to make sure, one hard drive, one floppy drive, one dvd drive... all of which are listed in my computer as well as the "ghost cdrom drive). I uninstalled it again and went to add hardware and it found the cdrom again... very confused nowMy final update and solution to anyone who might COME across this same situation. You have to initialize, partition, and format the new hard drive.

To do this:

* Right click on My Computer and choose "Manage"
*Double click on "Storage"
* Double click on "Disk Management"

If you see your new hard drive in here then you are in business. Right click on your hard drive and choose properties... you should be able to initialize first and then Partition and Format in one step. Then the new hard drive is ready for use

Solve : Invisible Video Card??

Answer»

So.. this game program I am trying to run on my XP here, it complains that I don't have any direct3D set, so I check it out.. and my DirectX-Diagnostics TELLS me I don't even have a video card!

Now I know this is bogus because I was ABLE to play this game MONTHS ago. It might have to do with a reformatting that we did a short while before christmas, but I'm not sure what to do. I apparantly don't have any direct3D components active, even though I did reinstall the newest version of directX, like, earlier today.

Do I need a driver or something to check on my video card, so I can GET direct3D to WORK again? If you have onboard video then the drivers will be on the MBoard driver CD that came with the machine.
If you have an addon vid card you should have recieved a driver CD with it.
Either way simply re-install the drivers and you should be good to go.

Solve : How to remove the heatsink and hood in a Compaq Evo D510 SFF computer?

Answer»

This has a Pentium 4.2 Processor. There are 2 clips on the side that hold the hood that goes to the front fan and the heat sink. It seems obvious that when you push on plastic handle on top of the clips they lock in place. I cannot SEE how to release them without applying too much force. I searched the HP site and in the books I have there are illustrations of all types of clips to attach heatsinks but not this.Well I got myself a LONG NEEDLE nose pliers and with the right angle they came off without damaging the motherboard. Now I have to see if the CPU is not fried.Good Luck with that...remember to use THERMAL PASTE when re-assembling...

Solve : Strange mouse and keyboard behavior?

Answer»

I'm running a brand NEW Dell Inspiron with Windows XP SP2. It all works like it's supposed to, but some of the games I play don't agree with it.

My keyboard does the evil thing where I can press no more than 2 keys at once. I need to press 3-4 keys at once while playing Stepmania at times, making it virtually impossible to score well. Also it makes it impossible to USE cheats in The Sims 2, seeing as to open the cheat box you need CTRL+SHIFT+C. Is there any way possible to get rid of that 2 key limit?

Also, the bigger issue is the mouse. Using the touch pad or an external mouse (Logitech LX7 cordless optical w/USB), any dialog boxes or command prompts i use in the Sims will not stay open...which is sort of necessary to play the game. O_O This also happens when I'm using Microsoft Word (2007). Whenever i use spell check, i have to literally FIGHT it in order to change a word using the OPTION or add something to the dictionary...which i need desperately! Please tell me if there's any ways to fix this! I've had these problems ever since i got this.

Don't continue to use that machine until you have borrowed/bought a known good PSU and swapped it in there to see if that is the culprit.
You RISK permanantly DAMAGING more than a hard drive in doing so...thats what it was patio...i opened up my pc and had a look in the cpu..there was a lot of dust and a burning smell coming from it..borrowed my brothers cpu and it booted up straight away..thanks for the info m8...learning all the time...all the best...theted

I thought computers these days can run multiple programs
That depends on what programs you're trying to run at the same time. A new DX 10 CAPABLE game can easily use all the system resources on even the most powerful home computer.I have an windows XP ,the program that gets knocked off is my roxio when copying a dvd the error number I cant recall I will have to do the same thing to get the numberSince gaming and burning are 2 of the most intensive memory hungry applications i wouldn't suggest doing them at the same time regardless of the hardware you have...I have 4 gigs 1066 mem how about power I have 450 watt bx

Solve : A / V input ??

Answer»

No, my only other computer is my LAP top, unless a friend of mine with the same type of computer will let me INSTALL it in his, he ALSO has a Dell.
BTW, INSTALLING a WDM driver didn't help at all.Try your friend computer, if possible, then. Otherwise, we won't know, if there is anything wrong with the card itself.Well Broni my friend, after all the problems with that capture card, all the downloads, patches, and all the help you offered, was all for nothing, I just sent it back today, it was dead.
I'd like to THANK you for all you did in trying to help me with it, I will be getting another one, and I'll let you know what happens with that card, who knows, it might become a Frisbee. Well, if you're not getting any problem with a refund, we can call it happy ending.

Solve : New Video Card?

Answer»

I recently bought UT3 and never thought to check the requirements (stupid me). Currently it runs with out dropping frames if the settings are on the lowest with the resolution set to 1024x768 when usually its 1440x900. I was hoping to get a new video card, but first need a few questions answered. As of now I have an integrated NVIDIA 6150 LE with 256 MB from a total of 2 GB system wide. The cards I looked at were NVIDIA 8500 and 8600. On NVIDIA's website it says these need a 300 watt PSU at MINIMUM which is what I have. On other sites I've seen the minimum is 350+. Which one is it? My current system specs are as follows:

HP Pavilion a1648x
AMD 64 X2 Dual Core 4400
2 GB system memory
3 PCI slots
1 PCI Express x16
300 W PSU
Widows XP MCE

Would either of these 2 cards work or would I need something else? Thanks. The 8600GT needs at least a 300W PSU.
An 8600GT will run UT3 acceptably, but if you're considering high levels of detail, high resolutions, and more DEMANDING games, consider a better video card and PSU - the 8600 isn't all that good.
Don't drop to an 8500 though, it will not run games very well at all.The RECOMMENDED cards for UT3 are a NVIDIA 7800GTX and ATI x1300. Wouldn't either of these be at least adequate enough to run the game. I don't see how the 8600 is just acceptable to run UT3 when the 7800 is the recommended. I guess I'm just not a hardware guru seeing as I'm a programmer. I'm not looking for anything amazing. I just want to be able to play some of my newer games (UT3, NHL 07) with average graphics. There isn't that big a difference between the speed of the 7 and 8 series except the 8 series supports DirectX 10. If you're low on cash, get the 8600. It should run on your 300 watt PSU, mine does. Get the 8800 if you have more money, but you're gonna have to get a new PSU with that.I have on more question. Is there a difference between PCI-E and PCI-E x16? I currently have 3 PCI slots and one PCI-E x16 slot available. It seems most 8600 cards I've seen mention PCI-E but not x16.The 8600 is around the same speed as a 7800 series card.
When a video card specification says PCI-E, they mean PCI-E X16, not one of the other types.

Solve : Dell PowerEdge 4350 Server?

Answer»

Hey Guys,

I recently received a Dell PowerEdge 4350 Server, with 2 Pentium III Processors, and 3 HDD's. It was only 30 bucks and figured it wasnt a bad deal, The only problem was that it didnt come with RAM, Im not sure if my regular PC-100 that i USE im my desktops will work, do i NEED to order special RAM?

Thanks,
JohnWow, that's a great deal.
And I thought I was doing well with my £30 P3 MACHINE, although at least I got RAM.
PC100 RAM should be fine in that machine - it does support ECC/registered/buffered RAM, but normal SDRAM DIMMs will be fine. It can take up to 2Gb of RAM if you're so inclined.
Hope this helps.
P.S. where did you get this PC from?Quote from: Calum on January 27, 2008, 10:57:50 AM

Solve : Whats more efficient? Single SATA Drive Partitioned or 2 separate SATA with IDE??

Answer»

In BUILDING my new comp. Im debating on what is the most EFFICIENT and fastest way to go about things. Partition my 300gb SATA drive to have my 40gbs worth of apps on one side and files on the other, or salvage my old 40gb IDE drive for my apps, and use the 300gb hard drive to house my files. Time is always a issue at my work and I just want to know if its faster to use independent drives. Thanks for all the HELP!partition the SATA drive. that way you will be able to take ADVANTAGE of the faster SATA interface on both partitions. if you wish to have an independent drive incase the SATA drive fails then using the IDE drive to house all your apps would be BEST.

Solve : Should I use 800mhz RAM with 667mhz RAM?

Answer»

So I decided to replace my old motherboard that supported only 667mhz RAM with a new motherboard that supports 800mhz RAM. I bought 4 gigs of 800mhz to replace the 4 gigs of 667mhz I CURRENTLY have. But in coming to think of it, am I better off to use all of the RAM to have a total of 8 gigs. In using all of it, the 800mhz RAm doesnt downgrade to 667mhz does it? The 800mhz will run at its own speed independently of the 667mhz RAM? Im wondering if this will cause any problems while overclocking. I use Photoshop and other media applications quite extensively so Im wondering if to save some money I should just return the 800mhz RAM. Thanks to all replies!Quote from: nutech310 on January 29, 2008, 01:39:53 PM

the 800mhz RAm doesnt downgrade to 667mhz does it? The 800mhz will run at its own speed independently of the 667mhz RAM?
Yes it does, and no it won't.
You will be able to use the 800 MHZ RAM but it will operate at 667 mhz. When you use RAM with mixed clock speeds the faster will always FALL back to speed of the slowest.
I HOPE you're using a 64 bit operating system though, because 32 bit Windows doesn't support more than 4 gb (and it can't even utilize 4 gb completely).
Thanks Deerpark, I thought 8gigs of RAM was a bit overkill, and no I dont use a 64-bit operating system.. I heard that about XP and the limits of RAM being utilized. Im also very curious about overclocking though, I just bought the Asus P5N-E SLI Mobo and I heard its a piece of cake. I have a q6600 as my CPU. Not very good IDEA using the 667mhz RAM to overclock my system with? I'm always vary about giving advice on overclocking. It's as much an art form as it is science, but I can give you a few pointers.
You should make sure you've got quality components before even attempting overclocking.
This means high quality RAM, a high quality power supply with plenty of power for the system, a good CPU cooler (the stock cooler you get from Intel isn't meant for overclocking) and good airflow through the case so the CPU gets plenty of cool air.
I would personally choose the 800 mhz RAM, since they'll give you a performance increase over the 667 mhz whether you overclock or not. Thanks for all the help, I guess I would consider this case closed. I think Ill keep the 4ghz of 800mhz RAM I bought... considering the 667ghz was a value select corsair, the 800mhz RAM will keep the options for the future more open to upgrade.

Solve : Are Drives Bad????

So, the same pin fell out on three drives? Hmm, that's quite strange and quite unlikely to happen. Was this all with the same IDE cable? I think I'd replace that cable.

By the way, are you looking carefully at the connectors on the cable and the hard drive when you connect a cable to be sure you are trying to force the cable connector on upside down?

Also, are being careful when removing a cable to not cause undue STRESS on the pins by pulling the cable straight off as nearly as possible? I think it was. It was a while ago. Yes, I use Mikes laws if it isn't going in easy. I don't know??? Thought I was useing the same strenth I used to all ways get them off.

Solve : How to clean laptop keyboard??

Answer»

I have a Sony VGN-FS640/w laptop recently my friend spilled coke on it. Laptop has been fixed and it works fine but the keyboard still sticks, can anyone tell me how to clean the keyboard without having to take a part the whole laptop from behind? I've searched online how to clean laptops and they all seem to have some clips which are easy to unclip and pull out the keyboard but this laptop doesn't have any. Any help is appreciated. Thanks. Most laptop keyboards are a sealed unit, so even if you took the laptop apart, the keyboard would just lift out as it is.
Buying a can of Isopropyl Alcohol is probably the best way to go about cleaning it.Nick is right on this one. Getting the keyboard out wouldn't help. The keys on laptop keyboards aren't designed to come off, even when the keyboard is REMOVED from the laptop. Attempting to remove the keys to clean under them would most likely result in the plastic cracking. Use a tiny amount of alcohol and attempt to clean the keys as is. Make sure the laptop is unplugged and the battery removed while doing thing. Allow a SUFFICIENT amount of drying time before reconnecting power.Quote from: ultimatum on December 03, 2007, 01:11:53 PM

Solve : On-board Video Problem?

Answer»

My Pentium 4 (HP Compaq) on-board video seems to be void. It cannot display anything on screen besides "No signal" How can I replace it? Did you check to make sure the monitor cable is pluged in?? Did you check for bent PINS?? If it's on-board you can't replace it without replacing the entire motherboard.
But before we jump to any CONCLUSIONS please post the specifications for the computer in question.
And follow squall_01's suggestions.Quote from: Deerpark on January 29, 2008, 06:36:02 AM

He could add a video card to replace onboard video, even if it's a PCI card. Of COURSE, if he has an AGP slot, that would be the better choice.Check monitor cable, as well. You may just CONNECT your monitor to another computer, if you don't have any extra monitor cable. Also, have you TRIED another monitor with this computer? Or have you tried this monitor on another computer?

To be fair, it looks like it's a new lappy for the chappy.

There's probably going to be a good few short circuited circuits on that bad Mobo.

Hopefully you should still be able to recover the data by swapping the HDD out...ACTUALLY the whole point of this topic it's to repair the mobo.

But thx anyways...
anyone have a suggestion? You could use alcohol. One cloth with a very light touch of alcohol, and a second to quickly wipe it off.

Most likely though, Sid is right.Wow.
Ice cream.
If it were me, I would just try to salvage the hard drive. I agree with Sid.
Good LUCK. I'd be interested in knowing how you make out with it.i would definitely agree with the other guys, it's gone

however i would just rip it open(any way possible) and try to salvage the hard drive to sell or to eat...

just kidding, please don't eat it...Quote from: electricmidget on January 10, 2008, 08:02:57 PM

ILMAOI think I will try with alcohol, see what happen... Alcohol is volatile so I just might take the ice cream out, with all shorts...

Better then throw out the whole thing away If you're very careful, disconnect power and the battery, and use very minute amounts of alcohol on a rag, it should be fine. Give it plenty of time to DRY as well. However, the damage may have already been done, especially SINCE it has been plugged and and attempted to turn on with the ice cream in it.Quote from: fryser_d on January 10, 2008, 09:21:34 AM
Hi everyone thx for your help.

Here's the problem: I got a client who spilled Ice Cream on his laptop...
It went under the keyboard, on the motherboard and now the laptop doesn't open. I got a green light for the power. But When I press the powerOn button... nothing happens.

I would like to know a product that can dissolve the "Ice Cream", without even more the motherboard....

2- It there any liquid that I can soak the motherboar in and take it out with no "Ice Cream" but with a working MB ?

Thx again for your time.

Solve : Motherboard connections?

Answer»

I have just replaced my ASUS P4C800-E DeLuxe with the ASUS PB5 DeLuxe/WiFi-AP motherboard to take advantage of Dual Core CPU's.etc
The former board had two audio 4-pin connector sockets, but the latter has only one. I used a CD player and a DVD player in the P4C board
If I connect my CD player to that, what are the options for USING the DVD audio outlet?
Why would any board only have one such soket when most PC's have two players?
Are CD players now a thing of the past and I should only ned my DVD player? There have been occasions when application instructions specifically warned against using a DVD player during instalation.

Maybe it's just me missing the obvious. It usually is.i am confused. by CD and DVD player, you mean the CD and DVD drive?

Quote

Are CD players now a thing of the past and I should only ned my DVD player?

yes. DVD drives ALSO play CDs.

Quote
There have been occasions when application instructions specifically warned against using a DVD player during instalation.

really? i have never in my life come across this.

the CD-LINE IN feature is being phased out, reason being, almost every new motherboard comes with an integrated headphone HOOKUP in the BACK, therefore eliminating the need to plug your headphones into your CD or DVD drive.Got that, thanks Homer.
Apparently all audio now goes up and down the data cables!!!

Solve : My computer does not register when I put in a DVD?

Answer»

I am having a problem with my HP 6130n as it will not register when I put in a commercial DVD. The drive will BURN DVDs and show home MOVIES on a DVD, but store BOUGHT DVDs do not work. The PC keeps asking me to insert a DVD. I have ALREADY gone over this with HP and they believe it is a copy right issue. I do not agree. The region is set at 1 on my computer and these are region 1 discs. HP keeps having me try different software to run the movies and I keep telling them that if explorer does not see the disc, what difference does a program MAKE? The problem seems to be the drive, but they disagrre. Has anyone out there heard of this type of problem before?no. i havent heardof that before but HP support sux and they either want you to buy something or they just try to get you off the phone as soon as possible. what i would do is go to the device manager and choose your dvd drive and uninstall it. then restart the computer. make sure your drivers are up to date and if you cant watch your movies after that, i would think about contacting HP again and demanding a replacement drive. good luckWhat Dvd playing software are you using?

Solve : Computer got wet.. not sure what to replace?

Answer»

So my COMPUTER got wet in this horrible California weather and now im trying to diagnose what I should REPLACE. It started with a big leak in my roof in my office. The water did not directly fall on the computer but bounced off the floor and toward the front of the comp. Unfortunately my computer was on. I leave it on BASICALLY all the time. I dried it up and restarted. In trying to boot it up normally, (I have windows xp) it will show the loading screen yet freezes on the second bar that scrolls. I then have to boot to safe mode with networking. By the way.. the screen has a lot of static about every inch up and down. I tested the screen on my other computer and that works perfect. I cant test the graphics card because I only have one comp that has pci-express. So it will boot to safe mode... the audio DOESNT work, and I can't tell if its the graphics card because its in safe mode. There are no signs in the systems log of all the peripherals that anything is malfunctioning. And sometimes I try to scroll down on a menu and it will not let me. Any ideas.. I think its between the video card and motherboard? Plus, if I misdiagnose... if I use a faulty video card on a new motherboard(if I have to buy one) can the faulty hardware mess up the rest of the hardware its currently on? Hopefully the sound card will work with another motherboard.Sorry but to add, if the motherboard got fried, does that also mean the CPU automatically GETS affected too?Remove a side panel and place a good size fan next to it and let it blow on there overnite at least...remove all power to the case.

This may sound stupid but here it goes..

When I plug the black power cored into my power source, it's OK. but once I connect the PRONGS to the white thing on the MOTHER board it makes this really weird noise. When it's PLUGGED into the motherboard, the green light doesn't show, but when it's not, the green light shows.

Solve : USB problems?

Answer»

My USB devices are getting power when plugged into my ports i.e. iPod is being charged but the devices are not being detected. This is happening on all ports. Devices work properly on other computers.dmafia, As i am currently pursuing a similar problem and being ably assisted by the gurus on this forum you MAY be assisted in solving your problem by referring to the post "Non functioning USB ports" by truenorth. Many of the aspects of my problem will need to be addressed by you to detail exactly what is the state of your USB ports. Good luck, truenorthis this a prebuilt PC or a custom PC?I checked the BIOS and USB was already enabled. The device manager lists 5 USB root hubs and 5 USB controllers corresponding to the 5 ports on the computer. All the devices show up as working properly without conflicts. Again the USB devices i plug in are getting power...an iPod will charge, a flash drive will light up, and the wireless adaptor card light comes on, but they are just not detected by the device manager.
Therefore, it won't connect to the wireless network and the flash drive is useless, etc. It is a Gateway computer prebuilt. It is a relative's computer so just let me know what other information/specs you may need and i'll find out. I know it runs XP. Thanks! One thing you can try...unplug all but the mouse and keyboard.
Travel to Device Manager and right click every instance of USB roots and hubs...make sure to expand the listing to get them all...select "remove" or un-install....you will recieve an error message each time, ignore it.
Power down and wait a few minutes.
Re-boot and let it continue the whole boot process before checking anything. XP will automatically re-install the drivers.
Plug in a USB device after you are sure all activity has stopped and see what happens...Good idea PATIO. That has worked for me in the PAST when i've had hardware issues. Don't know why I didn't think of it in this case. Unfortunately it didn't work. They all reinstalled correctly but that didn't solve the problem. Could it be a driver issue?
thanks truenorth. i've read your thread too...sounds like similar issue although different OS. i may have to bite the bullet and try a clean install....as it isn't my computer tho i'll have to wait TILL they backup all their stuff. it's a Gateway PC, and they called Gateway Tech Support the other day, but no help.If you dont want to do a reinstall you could try cleaning the ports. Some times dirt will make ports unusefull if there not USED and becomed used. If this doesn't work a reinstallment should work like patio said.

Solve : Computer shuts itself off?

Answer»

Hello.

I am currently in the process of moving some files from an old 420 MB hard drive to my main drive. I finally was ABLE to get both drives recognized (by USING separate IDE cables for both of them). Installing the drives, however, required removing the processor's (P4 2.0 GHz) heat sink, and then (of course) putting it back. Unfortunately, I now have the problem of my machine automatically shutting itself off. This began earlier today after a separate attempt at putting the 420 MB drive in.

What happens is the machine automatically shuts itself off (I'm assuming the motherboard / BIOS is doing this as some kind of a protective measure), usually during Windows loading, sometimes very shortly after, and other times before even beginning to load the OS (such as in the BIOS setup). The event log shows the error as "Pre-boot Error: Keyboard Not Functional", and indeed the keyboard QUITS working right before the shut-off, even though it works fine otherwise, and the same thing happens without anything plugged into the PS/2 slot. Also, the CPU fan seems to speed up or at least get noisier, which brings me to my next point - one of the fan WIRES is broken (I think it's the ground, though it might be the tachometer). However, simply disconnecting the CPU fan (yeah, I know, not a good idea) and trying to boot with it off produces the same result! Also, earlier today after it started working again, I believe the wire was severed also.

Anybody have any ideas on what to do? Thanks!

EDIT: The machine does the same thing with the IDE and power cables to the second (420 MB) hard drive disconnected).

EDIT TWO: I was able to get into Speedfan right before the machine shut itself off. CPU temp was normal (35 I think?) but remote was at 102! However, this does not seem right, as nowhere in the machine felt hot. I have had this same computer get so hot it caught on fire (problem then was a clogged PSU fan), but back when it got hot then you could feel the heat very well on the chassis. Now the computer feels very cool all over, so I'm wondering if it's a sensor malfunction.Quote

Also, the CPU fan seems to speed up or at least get noisier,

that is due to the motherboard receiving high temperatures from the temp sensor underneath the CPU, and in turn, making the CPU fan increase speed in hopes of dissipating that heat. it sounds as though you may have incorrectly hooked up the heatsink, having a fan with a severed wire also doesnt help. is the heatsink seated properly and securely? did you remember to apply thermal paste? if so, did you add the correct amount of thermal paste?

Quote

the rest of the comp feels cool because the the heat from the CPU is not being dissipated correctly, if at all.

i strongly suggest purchasing a new heatsink, one without a severed wire. And see below...

Thermal Paste instructionsQuote from: homer on January 27, 2008, 03:00:30 AM

That was the problem. Those heat sink / fan assembly things are SO annoying to mount!

As far as I know, the wire is for the tachometer, and temps are totally in bounds, so I'm not that concerned. I'll get a new heat sink when I get a new processor - after all, a new heat sink would probably be worth more than the old P4 2.0 GHz I have in there

I have connected different minitors and video cables to it, yet it gives the same error message. What is the problem and how can I solve it?Is it STILL under waranty? If so, dont touch the insides.

if not, you need to tell us what happned in the last few days that might have caused this change.

If worse comes to worse, you just might have to spring for a crappy video card Looks you will need a video card...post back on what you mostly USE the machine for and we'll get you steered in the right direction.
You may want to add some RAM while we're at it and we can advise on that as well.

Solve : adding a 2nd IDE hard drive?

Answer»

i just had an OLD HP machine donated/given to me. upon looking inside the computer, to my amazment there was a spankin' new Western Digital 80 Gig hard drive. im going to put this hard drive in my current machine.

problem is, i have never OWNED, or dealt with a computer that had more then 2 hard drives. i know how to physically install hard drives, but the issue i will most likely enounter will be upon start up.

i assume i will have to go into the BIOS, and make sure the hard drive is read as the slave drive....then what? i assume i will have to format it...but how can i do that without going into the regular operating mode?. please tell me i wont have to reinstall windows or anything, lol.

i have no idea if the hard drive has data on it.Let's assume that hard drive has some version of Windows installed on it; in other words, it was the drive with the Operating System (OS) for the old computer. How do you want to use it in your NEWER computer, just for extra storage or for the OS?

If for extra storage (leaving your OS on your existing drive in the newer computer), then you just configure it as the "slave" drive. The existing drive would be "master". Here's a reference to help: How to Change the Master/Slave Designation on a Hard Drive, and How to Install a Second Hard Drive.

Once you get it installed, you can look and see what's on it. You may want to format it to ERASE everything on it.

Solve : Fan control on the 8800GT Question.?

Answer»

Ok, i finally got the EVGA 8800GT. I downloaded RivaTuner to increase my fan speed, but when i run it, a message pops up that says, "WARNING, RivaTuner has not been tested with the current installed displayed driver. It is strongly recommended to upgrade Riva Tuner to a new version, otherwise it may not work PROPERLY because the driver is not officially supported".

I downloaded the lastest driver at NVIDIA.com and my RivaTuner version is 2.06. which is the LATEST that i can find...

Do i continue to using the fan speed controls for my 8800GT then? or try and find a solution to this if there is one.

My Rig:
Dell E521
Athlon X2 4200+ ~ 2.2GHz
2 GB RAM @ 667 MHz
EVGA 512mb 8800GT
250GB hard drive 7200 RPM
500 watt Coolermaster PSU
Vista Home Premium 32-bit
22" Westinghouse Monitor (LCM-22w3) you may also modify the fan speeds by using ntune.
i like ntune because you can make the fan speedup and many other control when somehting triggers them.
such as i can make the fan speed turn up as soon as i start a 3d application or suchare you overclocking your 8800gt? is that the reason you need to crank up the fan speed?Well ,it idles around 52-53 C. and when i play games, it can reach up to 80 C (in certains games). I just want it a lower temp, and no, i am not overclocking it.80C is still fairly good. anything below 90C is good.

what is your computer case make/model?Dell. I got a Dell E521.

http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dime521/en/SM_EN/specs.htm#wp1052310how is the ventilation inside the case? you have to remember, you can speed up the fan, but if there is not very good ventilation in the case, your fan will just be pushing HOT air.i would say it's pretty good, if you see a Dell dimension E521, then u will see that there is a 120mm fan in the front pushing air over the CPU and its giant heatsink and out back. Although i added a 80 mm fan and screwed it on the back to help take that air out even faster. Of course i have my 8800GT stock fan that blows up into the 80 mm fan and out the back of the computer. I also have my 120mm that is on my power supply which is at the top of my case and that blows out the back also.to the best of my knowledge, the stock fan speed is at 60%. if you increase it to 100%, you will notice it gets alot LOUDER and, in my experience, the temps will only drop about 5C. i would not be worried about the peak temperature being 80C, 80C is fine. however, if you are still concerned about temperatures, i recommend buying an aftermarket cooler.i hope 80C is fine, i just don't want no over heating problems. Dont want anything to get wreckedthe graphics cards have an overheating protection system so the card will not be damaged incase of an overheat. if the card gets too hot, it will lock up your computer.haha, that used to happen to me when i didnt have good case CIRCULATION and i had a graphics card that only had a heatsink, long story short many loockups because i didnt know what i was doing...

i recommend purchasing nvidia cards from EVGA. they are significantly cheaper then BFG or ASUS.

Did you mean with eVGA's step up program, FREE games (either in box with card itself or after registering on eVGA's website) .... that would make it significantly cheaper?

One QUESTION: eVGA's step up program seems to me like you are just TRADING in your old card for a better card, which to me is the same as paying for the better card in full the first time around.

Which them to me, feels like if I don't like my card because I want now a better card, I can within 90 days, get a refund on my current card and buy a better eVGA card.....
EVGA has got, according to many people, the best customer service and warranty out of all the nvidia cards suppliers, however, i have personally not looked into this.

Quote
Did you mean with eVGA's step up program, free games (either in box with card itself or after registering on eVGA's website) .... that would make it significantly cheaper?

by my saying of "EVGA cards are cheaper," i literally meant just that.

8800 GTX 786mb GDDR3 575mHz core 1.8gHz memory from ASUS - $614.99
8800 GTX 786mb GDDR3 575mHz core 1.8gHz memory from EVGA - $529.99

prices attained from www.ncix.com

from here you can clearly see there is an $85 difference between the two vendors for the EXACT same product. in addition to EVGA's lower price, for a limited time NCIX offers $30 off plus EVGA offers a $50 mail-in rebate and the Crysis game for free. this increases the price gap between the two vendors to a whopping $165 difference.

Quote
One question: eVGA's step up program seems to me like you are just trading in your old card for a better card, which to me is the same as paying for the better card in full the first time around.

that is exactly what it is. but if, for whatever reason, you cannot buy the better card at that moment, the step-up program puts the full value of the card you just bought and puts it into the price of the better card. to put it simply, if you bought a lower-end card and wish to purchase a better card, you will have to sell your old card, because your old card has been officially "used," you will not be able to sell it at the same price at which you purchased it. the step-up program insures that you will not lose any money when you upgrade your card by giving you the full purchase price of your card.i see. so that effectively just means that you can get a full refund on the old card and simply purchase a new card in the eVGA deal and you're not short of money just because you can't return for full price since it's now "open box" used product.

best warranty for eVGA? I see that eVGA and BFG both have lifetime warranty. If card is not working, they will repair card OR if not fixable, replace card given that you have NOT damaged the card's physical appeance or modified it. (except well, changing fans on the card might be ok)

And XFX gives double lifetime warranty, which is exactly the same as eVGA and BFG's except that the warranty continues on if let's say, you give your card to a friend.

Anyways ...
bfg's warranty is void if you overclock, it is also void if you modify the card in anyway, such as adding an aftermarket cooler.

EVGA's warranty is void if you damage your card during overclocking, it is not automatically voided the second you overclock. also, your warranty is only voided if you damage the card during installing an aftermarket cooler, it is not automatically voided the second you take a screw out.

Solve : Troubleshooting Motherboard/CPU?

hello there everyone! thanks for your help in advanced.

a few years ago i purchased an HP Pavilion desktop pc, when i wasnt into building computers or knowledgeable in the computer world. the specs of the system were:

HP Pavilion
Windows HP Home
DVD Drive (stock)
Cd Burner (stock)
Floppy Drive (stock)
Intel Celeron
Stock Motherboard with onboard sound and graphics
80 Gig HDD
250 Watt Stock ATX PSU

this was my everyday system from 2003 to september 2007. i didnt have any problems with it for the most part...except for the cd burner stopped working, so i got an external dvd burner so i would have a burner. i went on vacation in september for only about 3 days, so i just LEFT the computer on when i was gone as i usually did...i rarely turned it off. when i returned home and went into my room....to my delight the computer was turning on and off repeatedly...it would power up for 5 secs, shut down, power up...i stood there and saw it do this for about 2 mins...

i then unplugged the power cord, and decided to just to let it rest. after about 4 hours of letting it sit there, i decided to clean the computer out with canned air and get all the dust out, cleaned out the fans, heatsink...the whole deal. i put everything back together, turned on the computer and it did the same thing...so i unplugged it again and i went out to buy a new power supply because in my experience, a problem like this is most likely caused by a powe supply problem. i got a new 400 watt atx power supply...hooked it up and the computer did the exact same thing. i was stuck buying a new motherboard. i didnt have a working computer until i had enough money for a new motherboard and CPU...which was about a week ago lol. my mom actually bought me the motherboard i have now for christmas, but she got me one that is for AMD CPU's, so i had to buy my own Processor. just got a Sempron 2800 with heatsink and fan from ebay for $31 all together.

so as of right now my system specs are

MSI Mainboard
AMD Sempron CPU (i know its not that good of a CPU, but im not a gamer or anything)
Stock CD Drive
Stock Floppy Drive
80 GB HDD
512 MB DDR
400 Watt ATX PSU
Windows Home freshly installed.

i have a new ATX Gamers case on the way, with blue LED fans and Blue Cathodes...its gonna be cool as ice.

everything is working fine and dandy now. but im not here to talk about my current specs...im here to finally get an ANSWER to....WHAT in the world happened to my OLD motherboard and/or cpu (i have no way of telling which one was actually causing my system to act WEIRD)

most would say, dont worry about your old stuff since you got a newer system now! but i would like some closure on what went wrong, and to see if maybe, just maybe my old CPU could work on a new intel motherboard. plus, i have enough parts around here to build another computer (just need new memory), and i need to see if i need a new intel cpu, or motherboard.

thanks in advanced for any help...and thanks for reading my story lolyou will need a known-working motherboard that is the same socket type as your old CPU in order to test it. if it works, then the problem is with your motherboard. it might even be that the CMOS battery is simply in need of replacement on your motherboard.

Solve : computer reset problem?

Answer»

Recently my desktop started reseting randomly. Need help diagnozing the problem.
Here is the details.

motherboard is 848P-A,
have 600W power supply.
nvdia 5200 graphics card.
3 IDE harddisks of VARYING capacity and 1 SATA disk.
2, 512MB DDR memory. DIMM
HP CD-RW drive.
Windows XP is installed on the SATA disk.

The machine boots up and stays up if booted in 'safe' mode.
However if booted in normal mode it resets randomly, either during the boot process or about 2 minutes after logging in.

Tried a fresh install of windows on another harddisk, but the system suddenly resets during install.
Tried booting on Fedora Core Linux, same problem, either hangs or resets.

Tried disabling each disks, changing graphics card, disabling on board devices through BIOS.
problem persists.

Did some motherboard diagnostics using multimeter and INSTRUCTIONS provided somewhere on fixya.com(cannot locate the exact link, right now). voltages show up right as per the instructions.

what could be going wrong?

RAM. remove one of the two sticks and see if it randomly resets, then swap the sticks of RAM and see if it randomly resets. this will DETERMINE which stick, if either, is faulty. if the problem persists after testing each stick, then we will know the RAM is not at fault.Possible flaky power supply. Do you have another?

Alan <>< yes. have tried removing each memory stick and then swapping them. No combination stopped the problem.

also this problem initially showed up when I had a 400W power supply. So thinking that the power supply was the culprit, I REPLACED it with a 600W power supply. The problem continued even after that.

I this point I am thinking motherboard to be the culprit, since I tried installing windows XP fresh. By removing all devices, but the CD drive, and plugged in a brand new SATA disk. But the install stopped inbetween due this random reset.

Is the 600W new or used ?
What brand is it ?its brand new.

cooler master extreme power duoIf the problem followed you after you've replace the power supply then you're motherboard is probably hosed.

Alan <>< Although i have seen brand new PSU's DOA i'm afraid Alan MAY be right here...

Solve : So I bought a new computer case...?

Answer»

i just purchased one of these baby's:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=300192099961&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=020

along with Duel Cathode tubes, and a BLUE LED Fan (will buy 2 more later)

it says in the desription:
Two (2) Side mounted USB 2.0 ports
Side mounted microphone and headphone jacks

my question is, what kind of wiring will i have to do, to successfully install those things? this is my FIRST after market computer case.the USB ports on the side of the computer will have a plug on the end that will look like this...

this will plug into the motherboards USB HEADERS. you will need to either look at the manual to find the USB headers, or you can look at the motherboard itself and it should say USB1,2 or 3,4 depending on how MANY USB ports you have (a SINGLE USB header actually holds two USB ports, so you will see two consecutive numbers.)

Hopefully all of these components will not overheat ^_^

Another question, woud it be better to get a Nvidia video card for this setup or a Radeon? I want the maximum performance, and I have heard great THINGS about Nvidia.that is a SLI motherboard. SLI belongs to Nvidia, so its best if you purchase a Nvidia card. you can still purchase an ATI card, but you will not be able to use Crossfire.

why, under the link you gave for RAM, does it show an 8800GTS?Sorry, must've screwed that up. Fixed now.
IS all of that compatible? Would it overheat?that is all compatible, HOWEVER, you may wish to purchase your RAM in pairs, it might be cheaper getting 2 sets of 2 sticks then 4 sets of 1 stick.

Quote

Would it overheat?

that depends solely on overclocking. if you wish to run all your components at stock speeds, then they will not overheat.

Solve : new computer won't boot?

I just built my first computer, but it won't boot. it gets as far as the windows xp loading screen, then SHOWS a really QUICK blue screen then resets. the screen flashes too quickly to read anything on it.

Does anyone have an idea? thanks alot
Can't even begin to guess without more information...sorry, hardware is as follows:

Motherboard - aBit AB9 QUAD GT

Videocard - Geforce 7600GT

CPU - P4 3.2 ghz

2 IDE hard drives

1 GB Ram

the only parts that weren't new were the processor and the hard drives. i've tried other hard drives and they do the exact same thing, so i've singled that out, i read a post here where a similar situation was happening, and they determined that it was teh ram, but since i only have one stick of ram, i can't test it. i'm just wondering if someone has any ideas before i drop more cash on new ram, or bring the computer in.

thanks for your time
i strongly suggest testing the RAM. as for purchasing it, you really do not need to purchase new RAM, you could just temporarily borrow a stick of compatible RAM from your buddy.

what type of RAM is it? we need the make/model. we need EXACT details for troubleshooting.

Quote

the other harddrives that you tested on the mobo, were they all IDE as well? if they were, i suggest trying out a SATA harddrive then see if the problem persists.Memtest86 from http://www.memtest86.com will test your ram in situ.If you can't read the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), try to stop the reboot process.

Power up the computer, tapping the F8 key about once per second (or wait for the keyboard LEDs to flash, then tap the F8 key). You should see the Windows Advanced Options menu. Select the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" item to stop the reboot cycle. Hopefully instead of rebooting it will now stop on a BSOD. If you get BSOD, copy the "exact" error message text and numbers and post here. This information can be used to SEARCH Microsoft Knowledge Base and/or Internet for possible causes and resolution.
godsenddeath, you say the hard drives aren't new. Are you by chance trying to load an old Windows installation present on one of those drives?
When you make major hardware changes you will need to reinstall Windows, else it will crash in the way you describe.Quote from: Deerpark on January 26, 2008, 03:47:50 AM

ahh, very good question deerpark. the OP did not specify if he reinstalled windows.no i didn't re-install windows, i figured windows would adjust itself. i think that may be the problemRepair Install of XP.

NOTE: You need a MS XP CD for this procedure and it has to match your version....XP Home = XP Home etc.
I suggest reading it thru to become familiar with the procedure. Pay special attention to the Warnings.
Then print out a copy for reference.

NOTE # 2: If done properly all your data and programs will be intact. Immediately after booting successfully install the MBoard drivers and vid card drivers.
If done improperly you will lose everything and have a clean install of XP ...so make sure to backup anything important.original poster, your going to have to fresh install windows. i just put a new motherboard in my computer and i had to do a clean install of windows.Actually he don't, a repair install should be fine.Quote from: Deerpark on January 27, 2008, 01:58:35 PM

I had the same issue with a Pentum III socket 370, i fixed the problem by buying a new 400w ATX power supply, it turns out that my DVD drive was pulling to much power. its only a suggestion though, be sure to do as Homer said, and check your RAM

Solve : HELP! wiping hard drive clean/reinstalling software?

Answer»

I have a HP computer with Windows XP. There is some internal problem that can't be found. I want to remove everything from the hard DRIVE and reinstall software and programs. I am a novice. Any suggestions as to where I can FIND some step by step instructions on wiping the hard drive clean and reinstalling new software? HELP! DavidDo you have a system restore disc from HP or a Windows XP install disc?
You will need either of those in order to reinstall XP.You need to know the brand of the Harddrive to get a format/partiton software. XP has this in it as well but you need to know what your doing. Also, you'll need all the installer discs to the programs you have on there if you wish to have them installed. As for step by step.... I'm not sure right off. Try google. If you need any help come backHere is your step to step:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316941/en-us

also a general troubleshooter:

http://www.aumha.org/win5/support.htmcontact HP and ask them to send you system restore discs. i got mine for FREE. the restore discs will restore your computer back to the way it was brand new.

or you could use an original Windows Disc and re-install windows that way. i suggest this method, because HP fills there pre built systems with bundled software and ADWARE, and using the restore cd's will retore all of these programs as well.

Solve : Hard drive boots in Master/Slave mode, but not by itself?

Answer»

I have two hard drives installed in my computer - a 120GB one and a 250GB one. Both have Windows installed on them. When I set the 250GB to Master, and the 120GB to Slave, the computer boots normally, and everything works. Now, I don't really need the 120GB drive, so I want to unplug it and just keep it inside the computer. I unplug the power plug form it, and the ribbon cable, leaving the jumpers in the same place on both drives. Then I try booting up the computer, and it says "No operating system found!" When I go into BIOS setup, with only the 250GB drive plugged in, it doesn't detect any hard drives at all. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for all your help.Welcome to the CH forum.

Is it this a dual boot configuration - was the Windows system on the 120GB drive installed last - does your boot.ini file show the default to be drive (1)? In other words are you attempting to boot from the Slave?

Or-

Is your 250GB drive jumpered as "Master with Slave Present".

This quote is extracted from here.
Quote

Slave Present: Some drives have an additional jumper that is used to tell a drive configured as master that there is also a slave drive on the ATA channel. This is only required for some older drives that don't support standard master/slave IDE channel signaling.

You neglected to say what drives we're trying to visualise (manufacturer and model) so we can't look up the details for ourselves.

Following up on what "Dusty" said, some hard drives may be jumpered as single, master, or slave. If you're running one drive, perhaps it needs to be jumpered as "single" instead of "master". Look at installation instructions from manufacturer for the single drive you want to run for proper jumper setup.Quote from: Dusty on January 26, 2008, 02:38:42 AM

I think that's where the problem is, although I'm not ENTIRELY sure. The boot.ini file looks like this (when the 250GB is set to master and the 120GB is set to slave):
Code: [Select][boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating SYSTEMS]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

Furthermore, here's what I see when I look at Disk Management:
When the 120GB is set to master and the 250GB is set to slave:

and the reverse, the 250GB as master, and the 120GB as slave:

Am I missing BOOT? If you installed Windows on the 250 with the 120 present the 250 will not boot without the 120 in the system. This is by design. Windows no matter how many drives/partitions it's installed to will write the boot files to the C: drive.

One thing you can try if you have an XP CD is to hook up only the 250 and do a Repair Install of XP

Read thru the instructions fully to understand them paying special attention to the warnings and PRINT out a copy for reference...
If done correctly you will now be able to boot with the 250 as a standalone drive and your programs and data will be intact.

NOTE: If done incorrectly you risk losing everything...so backup first.Quote from: patio on January 26, 2008, 10:54:50 AM

If I try to the Repair Install on the 250 alone, it doesn't let me do it, saying there is no hard drive connected or if there is, it's improperly configured. This doesn't sound right...is it jumpered as master and connected to the end of the ribbon cable ? ?
Does it show in the BIOS ?
Is this a lecitimate XP CD ?Quote from: patio on January 26, 2008, 11:54:28 AM

I tried it both with it jumpered as master, and as cable select. Both times, it was connected to the end of the ribbon cable. When only the 250 drive is connected, is does not show up in the BIOS. When both drives are connected (250 as master and 120 as slave), both show up in the BIOS. The XP CD is legit. What type of ribbon cable is used - 40-pin 40-wire or 40-pin 80-wire?

Final request for the drive manufacturer(s) and model numbers.

The ribbon cable is 40-pin and 40-wire (I think - not really sure how to tell 40-wire apart from 80-wire, but it's an old cable, so I'm assuming 40-wire). Both drives are Western Digital. The model number for the 250 drive is WD2500JB-57GVC0, and for the 120 drive is WD1200JB-00FUA0WD's have 2 different master settings...standalone and master w/slave...set it to standalone and try a brand new 80 wire IDE cable.Even when set to standalone, it's still not recognized by the system if the 120 is not connected.
The weird thing is, the 250 used to be my only drive. Then it crashed, and that's when I put the 120 into the computer, to try and recover some data. Before the crash, the 250 was working fine with the 40-wire cable. I don't have an 80-wire acble on hand, but I'll pick one up at the store and give it a try this weekend. Any other possible solutions in the meantime?Quote from: irrumator11 on January 26, 2008, 01:22:35 PM

I think we all missed it and it was so obvious - what we are fumbling around with is a defective drive, either the MBR has been dropped or the disk is physically defective in that area.

Here are the WDC instructions for jumpering their drives.

Install the 250GB drive as the only one (Single) and run the WD disk diagnostics program. If the disk passes the diagnostics test go to this site and follow the instructions to recover from a bad MBR. If the disk does not pass the WD diagnostics test use it as a doorstop.

Good luck.

I tried installing the 250 as a single, but it's still not recognized at all. Doesn't even show up in BIOS! So weird. I'm afraid it's headed to its new career as a doorstop, although luckily it's still under WARRANTY from WD, so they're sending me a replacement (but probably equally crappy) drive.Another option is to set it up as it was so you are able to get to both Windows installations...
Then determine which one is the 250.
Shut down and boot to the Recovery Console.
Choose which Windows install to work on ( the 250 ) and run both fixboot and fixmbr from the Recovery Console and power down.
Now hook up only the 250 as master and enter the BIOS and run auto detect.
If it picks up the drive now it will probably now be bootable.

Good Luck.

Solve : Floppy disc drive will not work?

Answer»

When I insert a disc into the drive, this message comes up:
'A:\' is not accessible. The disk MEDIA is not recognized. It may not be formatted.
I know that the disc is formatted because it says it right on the cover. I think the problem lies within the drive, because I have tried other discs. Any suggestions?Replace the drive.

Alan <>< Or quit using floppies

But if you really must USE them, yeah, replace the drive.

I wouldn't advise keeping anything IMPORTANT on them. Compared to what's available now, a floppy disk is just about the most unreliable storage MEDIUM. Sensitive to just about everything (heat, magnets, water, stress), they are easily damaged.

Consider converting what you can to CDs or other more reliable storage. If you require editing of the files, a flash drive would be ideal.

Solve : Need driver for mobo.?

Answer»

Hello guys!
So my friend got a fujitsu siemens computer for christmas, and he and his friend tried to install it.
Now he was about to plug it to his big tv, but plugged it wrong so they didnt see anything on the screen, so they rebooted it. Now when they started it again nothing OFCOURSE appeared on the screen, because it was plugged in wrong.
So he called me and i WENT over to his place, and plugged the vga-cable right, voila.
Now the pc had Vista pre-installed on it, but it somehow got F****d up (because of the sudden REBOOT) so you couldnt do anything with it, just came up some popup saying that vista was unable to blabla...
So, we un-installed Vista and put xp on it, all went well but i realised then that all the drivers were gone.
All the drivers are now installed, exept the mobos...:E
I am not even sure what the mobo is, because the fujitsu support guy was pretty annoying and ´didnt tell me anything usefull.
i think it is a "amd 690 vm-fm" could it be something like that? So i need the driver/drivers for it, so my friend can get internet to his computer.

The specs for it are :
Xp
amd 5000+ x2
8600 gs 512mb
3gb ddr2

Thanx! Can't tell you a single thing without knowing the computer model number.

That's like going to a mechanic and telling him you need a new part for your Ford, but not telling him what model or year.Fujitsu siemens scaleo pa 2662http://support.fujitsu-siemens.com/com/support/downloads.html

It won't let me get to the FINAL page (where the actual drivers are) without a serial number, which I don't have.

However, if you go to that page, enter your information, then move on... it should take you to the page with drivers for XP (if available).Yes, i have been there, the problem is (SORRY, forgot to mention ) that there are several drivers for vista, but only 2 for xp (none of them are important) so i was wondering if i could get the driver for the mobo
from somewhere else??

Thanx
