Solve : Q-Force esprit 131 VHP?

Answer»

Hello Dear Fellow Thinkers,
I still have an old desktop Q-Force Esprit 131 VHP stand in the room. Because Windows 7 stops updates in January 2020, I WANT to replace the CURRENT 2GB memory with more memory. In The MANUAL It says that on the motherboard ABIT IP35-E DUAL CHANNEL DDR2 800. The maximum memory amounts to 4GB. Is this ENOUGH for the O S Windows home 10? Or do I have to buy another computer with 8GB?

Solve : PC won't turn on?

Answer» HELLO everyone,
So I'm just going to say I've had this PROBLEM where my pc won't turn on most of the time for about 8 months now , but I just left it on after it turned on once as i wasn't bothered to deal with it .

The problem -
The PC doesn't turn on , nothing happens when pressing the power on button, TRIED disconnecting and reconnecting the PSU cable and nothing happened.
I have a small white LIGHT on my GPU , when the light is on and I press the power button all the fans will start for a split second and turn off (the LED on the GPU won't turn back on) , no power gets to the front panel usbs after it turns off.
I SUSPECT this a PSU issue.

My specs -

Asrock b450 fatal1ty gaming k4

Amd Ryzen 2600

Asus rx 580 dual

4x 8gb 3000 ram

500gb Kingston SSD

300 GB HD

Be quiet pure power 11 600wIf you have another power supply to test your rig with, one that you know works, that would be the best course of action. Even if it is a lower wattage spec than what your rig is designed for. A quick power on test will most likely not damage the test PSU. If this is not the case, update your thread.

Solve : USB 2/3 Compatibility?

Answer»

I want to purchase and use a card (swipe type) reader for my HP business lap TOP, to SAVE me having to punch in credit card numbers. My HP has USB-2 ports on it. The reader I am considering says it has a USB-3 plug on its interconnect cable. Are these two devices compatible? USB 3 is backwards compatible with USB 2....so yes.

It'll just RUN at USB 2 speeds...Also USB 3 is able to supply more current than usb 2 so if the reader uses more than 400ma you may need to use 2* USB2 ports using a Y cable or get a usb 3 powered hub. Or if your HP Laptop has an esata port you can use that as the current is normally HIGHER than USB 2 but check the HP specs. Just a thought,

In some COUNTRIES owning and or using a card reader/card skimmer is illegal. Storing credit information on computer could be in breach of the credit card t&c's. I would make sure you have the card owners permission even if it is legal.

Solve : laptop without dual storage, setting booting OS into SSD M.2?

Answer»

Hey, I just want to move my OS into my SSD M.2 Sata but my laptop support claimed that dual STORAGE is not PERMITTED with my device.

My questions :

  • What is the consequence direct of lack of dual storage?
  • Does it involve UNDOUBTEDLY the impossibility of booting from SSD?
  • Can I still take advantage of speed if i install some programs on it?
What is the model of laptop?HP probook 440 G3It seems with your Laptop if you are using the SATA port you can't boot from the M2 drive. You may FIND it easier to either install a large M2 drive and remove the SATA drive. Or Just install a large SSD drive. Both run in your system at about the same speed so there is no real advantage in installing both. Finally, it was my bad, I cloned my old system and it has actually failed but I tried to boot from it.
So my solution : I had to install a new system with both SSD and HDD wired.

Solve : Better operating system than 64 bit??

Answer»

I WANT to ask one general question here, We have seen 32 bit and 64 bit Operating System.
Is there any other larger SIZE bit Operating System exist? If yes can you please share the LINK to download it.? i want the best speed operating system. For PCS there are 32 or 64 bit CPUs. A 64 bit CPU can run either 64 bit or 32 bit software (INCLUDING OS). There no 128 or 256 bit CPUs for PC, so no OS with more than 64 bits.

Solve : Can not reset or recover my laptop?

Answer»

Hi all, I try to recover my Dell laptop but it ended up with an error "There was a problem resetting your PC" when the resetting runs until AROUND 80. Whatever repair/recovery OPTION I CHOOSE, all end up looping with the same result. What can i do know?

What model Dell laptop are you reloading to, ALSO why are you needing to reload?
Can you explain how you are doing the recovery is it from the dell recovery partition, or with a Windows 10 recovery flash drive?
If the Laptop is UPGRADED from an earlier Windows version to Windows 10 you will need to run the recovery from Win 10 recovery flash drive.

Have you run the Dell diagnostics in the Bios to check the hardware is ok ?
You may also need to delete all the partitions on the hard drive this will loose your data. And let windows re partition the drive.

Solve : Specific letters not working?

Answer»

The KEYS e, d, c, 3, f2 and f3 is not working on my Lenovo LAPTOP keyboard. These letters are pretty close to each other. I have not spilled anything in the keyboard, and the problem had gotten worse over time. If i pressed the keys ahrd enough before, they WOULD work, but now they wont anymore. Does anyone have a fix for this?Hi,

What is your Laptop model?

I am no keyboard expert, but since these keys are aligned it really looks like a bad PCB trace.
But before replacing the keyboard, you COULD try updating the keyboard drivers in device manager or reinstalling them from Lenovo's website (if there are specific drivers AVAILABLE), just in case...

Solve : Intel Pentium D Processor?

Answer»

Dear Users
HMM Intel Pentium D Processor with 2 Cores for example I have 3.0GHz Processor
so will it both cores work at a time giving 6GHz speed or just like tradiational Dual Processors
Thanks It's like a dual processor system, only in ONE chip.
When doing one thing at a time it will be like a P4 at 3GHz, but when multitasking or running a multi threaded PROGRAM it will be up to twice as fast, like having two P4s at 3GHz.
Hope this HELPS answer your question.I believe this is inaccurate...with both cores maximised running no MATTER what application it is at 3Ghz ...Calum didn't say that it was "twice as fast" clock wise, he said it can run some tasks "up to twice as fast" as they would run on a single core cpu.

Solve : disk read error?

Answer»

when start my computer i get DISK read error occurred; Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart; Then the same thing happens again, and again and again.
I am running 2 HD's primary is 160 GB Maxtor (this is 1 that failed) and 20 gb Western Digital. I unplugged power to Primary just to reboot and get in the net. Primary runns WINDOWS XP, secondary run window me, I've been in set-up and tried everything, reboot from disk, can't get HD to start even in safe mode. My thinking is, If I get to access the HD then I can PERFORM scan disk to fix errors. Any suggestions??First i would DLoad and run the diagnostics from the drive maker's site to make sure the drive is healthy,
Next if you can only boot to ME run chkdsk on the offending drive from there.
Last RESORT: Repair Install of XP

I suggest reading it through first to get familiar paying special attention to the warnings and then printing out a copy for reference.

Solve : Upgrading video card requirements?

Answer»

yes as you can see i am new here
ok to start off ive been surfing the net to replace my powercolor 9600
i found a bunch of new ones like the XFX geforce 7600 GT AGP at my budget ($100-170)

apparently what i find disturbing is that the card i was going to buy has a power connector to the right (4pin MOLEX)
so i checked my PSU (powersupplyunit) for any extra wires for it, i found some but they were only coming from the hardrive and my CD/DVD drives
so now i wonder and ask this question
do i need a new PSU
does that card require to draw power from the PSU?

heres the card i wanted to buy- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150233
my PC specs are the following
AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (2.2ghz)
1.5 GB DDR SDRAM
Powercolor ati 9600 pro 256mb
180GB harddrive

if you have any info or can answer my question please post them here, i really need help, thanks advance

What is the wattage of your current power supply?

You'll WANT to make sure the PSU can handle the additional hardware.

If there are extra cables you can use from the power supply...ATX connectors, but no Molex...you can always purchase an adapter and fit one end of the adapter to your PSU and the other to the card.

You'll want to make sure the connectors are either male or female...

The connectors coming from the PSU are usually female...so you'll need an adapter with a male connector on one end to fit the cable coming from the PSU.

You'll also want to make sure the molex connector on the adapter cable is also female...since the Molex connector on the card is male.

Hope this info helps...yea i checked but there was a wall blocking me from checking the PSU, but there was a sticker with the info outside, and all i can find was "DC output 250W" and a bunch of serial numbers , ( edit) i hope that info can help I would invest in a new PSU with 24 pins....don't buy a 20 dollar one.

Solve : My Hard disk does not power??

Answer»

I tested another hard drive with the same power pack and ribbon cable and it WORKS...... and i have an important files to copy out...what can i do again...Make sure all the jumpers are set correctly, check the pins, etc., look for any easy to notice physical damage, and hope for the best.

If you're very serious about needing this file, there are data recovery services that specialize in getting data from "dead" drives that have been shattered, or burnt, etc. But they are pricey.Okay, this is a LAST DITCH SOLUTION. I'm probably gonna get glares for even mentioning it, but it DOES WORK. Confirm BEYOND any shadow of a doubt that the HDD is the problem before trying this!

Freezing your hard disk often makes it work just enough for one last gasp. The one time I tried this, it was with a HDD I found at the side of the road (no, really), and I was curious to see what it CONTAINED. Plugging it in didn't work, so I tried the freeze trick, and lo and behold, it worked. However, melting frost then shorted the drive and killed it.

I got to play the leaked Doom 3 demo, though. It's not even clear what the poster is trying to accomplish and you have him going to a data recovery service and / or putting his HDD in a freezer ? ?

it is most likley that your Hdd controller is on the blink, if you have access to many dtrives and you spot one with the same board and model number then go head all you can do is try it before attempting to aproach a costly recovery service

Solve : Sound only works in certain programs?

Answer»

I am having sound problems--the sound will not work in DOS-based games, or in programs such as Spider SOLITAIRE or Pinball (games that came with my computer). However the sound does work in iTunes, CD-Rom or DVD-based games, and AOL. System sounds (like for ERROR messages) are WORKING. I've tried all the obvious (checking to see if sound effects are enabled in a particular game, restarting computer, MAKING sure sound is not muted, etc.). I have a Creative SB Live series sound card. I have not tried reinstalling/updating the sound driver, since the sound is working in some programs. Any suggestions? THANKS!

Solve : Audio help??

Answer»

I have an Emachine W3050 with all the stock parts I.E. Nvidia GeForce 4 graphics CARD, Nforce 2 audio card and 512mb DDR SDram running Windows XP. My problem is this: I was doing ROUTINE cleaning of all the dust on the inside and outside of my computer today and when i was finished I hooked it back up and booted as normal with no DIFFICULTIES or problems except one. I only have sound out of the right side. I checked my speakers first thinking that would be the problem then i switched out a few all having the same problem. so i took the next step checking my audio on the computer itself. It was fine all centered NOTHING moved. And now I am at a loss. I am thinking i may have touched something inside the computer causing this. however there may be something i over looked on my desktop. please help. How did you CLEAN the dust from the inside? I hope you didn't use a vacuum cleaner...since this is not recommended...you can end up frying a card by ESD (Electrostatic Discharge). It's best to use compressed air and blow the dust out.

If this is not the case, you may want to try removing the hardware and reinstalling it.Remove the sound card and re-seat it...Quote from: patio on July 21, 2007, 09:15:52 AM

Solve : Dell Dimension C521 Ram?

Answer»

I got this computer about 3 years ago and it was pretty simple. So I upgraded LATER on with some Ram, so instead of 512mb I have now 2.5gigs.

Recently I was thinking to upgrade my memory again, to add an ADDITIONAL gig, unfortunately I found out that because my 512mb ram runs at 533Mhz the other 2 gigs won't run at 800mhz like they are supposed nor will the new 1gig memory run at the speed it supposed to.

So I tried to remove the 512mb Ram, that was originally in the machine, but the computer won't boot any OS, it just makes the pipping constantly, it's a long pip, for about 30 seconds or so then stops and then starts again.

I went to Dell and tried to upgrade the Ram and what they giving me is basically the same options for my exact computer, I did the analyze. So they are just showing me the 800mhz ram but if I upgrade it, it won't run at 800mhz because of the 512 Ram. Get it? Let me know if there isn't enough info, I can try to give you more, just not sure what else to give.
Thanks in advance. What OS is it? 32-bit, or 64-bit?
Check here: http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Dimension%20C521 for correct type of RAM, and correct way to install it.it's 32 bit windows 7, XP, and ubuntu.Did you check my link?Nope...That was a rhetoric question I did, I've been there before I went to these forums, that's where I was PLANNING to upgrade my memory. My question was, why is it that my computer can run all the memory downgrading it to 533MHZ but it can't run the memory without the 533Mhz that downgrades my 800Mhz, not what kind of memory I need lol. And if my computer can't handle the 800 Mhz then why all upgrades with 800 Mhz? that's like a waste of Mhz ya know lol.
Anyway, here is my DxDiag, so may be that might help out to answer the question.

I have cleared the CMOS, reinserted the graphics card & RAM, checked all the cables which are secure and it still dosen't boot up There are no post beeps and I didn't here any bangs so don't think the MOTHERBOARD has fried!

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers

Plug the monitor into another computer.

If the monitor works on another computer, then we've isolated the problem to your CURRENT computer. If it does not work, we've isolated the problem to your monitor..

should of mentioned the monitor works fine, I have tested my other PC and all is in order. Can you try the videocard in a different slot?...Be sure the end of the card stays fully seated when you screw it down. There are no other slot for a graphics card as its an AGPCheck your heatsink ....... is it flush to the motherboard and processor...you may have accidently nudged it when installing the new ram.Heatsink is secure, and removed all dust from heatsink, I am thinking the worse that the RAM has fried the motherboard! Are you getting a beep at startup or are you not getting that far?

...sorry"no post beeps"
Is there a port on the motherboard that you can plug the monitor into?Nope, there is no onboard graphics card, am going to take it to a computer shop today, will let you know the outcome. make sure the RAM is JACKED in tightComputer Shop told me the motherboard has fried, so looks like am buying a new PC!why don't you build your own motherboard? or buy a new oneQuote from: ireland-1 on June 23, 2009, 04:59:45 PM

Solve : PC Lockup (cliche, I know)?

Answer»

i have 2 nvidia 8600's running in SLI format, out of the BLUE, whenever i started ALT tabbing, the screens would turn black completely. (or the color of whatever app was running). My question to you is this: what COULD cause SLI to LOCKUP my COMPUTER? Both the drivers are up to date. And as stated before, my computer wasnt doing this before, it just "started happening"
Processer - Intel core 2 CPU 6420 (2.13 GHz each core)
RAM - 2 GB Corsair 667 mhz
Graphics - 2 Nvidia 8600 GT's running in SLI format (256 mb DDR 3)
MoBo -Nforce 570 SLIT-A
HDD - 1 - 80 GB 7200 RPM, one 320 GB, 7200 rpm// Both seagates

you tried to not run SLI?

this problem can be due to a bad connection. or that one of the 8600 are burned out and just wondering ... what power supply you got in that machine? (would like to know manutacturer, model, wattage and 12V rail(s) amp rating(s)....

Solve : Hibernation cures graphics.?

Answer»

My system:
P4 HT, approx 780mb RAM, ECS PM800-M2 mobo, 3.2Ghz processor, XP(sp3) and nvidia gforce fx5200 AGP card, 17 inch LCD Monitor and ADSL net connection.

I've noticed, whenever I start the PC, the graphics DISPLAY is garbled. See attached SCREEN shot. Same behaviour, if I run another copy of operating system, including linux.

I've tried updating the driver for the AGP card, but it didnot solve the problem.

However, If I resume the PC after Hibernation, the graphics display is normal.

Motherboard has onboard graphics as well and if I use that, the display is normal, but with reduced performance.

I presume, this is due to some problem in the AGP card, but I wonder, how it is getting cured by hibernation.

jawanda56

[attachment deleted by admin]the GPU is failing- have you overclocked it?Negative, BC_Programmer, No overclocking at all.

jawanda56either way- as you said, it's a problem with the card.

If I had to hazard a guess why hibernation fixes it, it's PROBABLY because hibernation shuts the machine down entirely, and then when you start it again it loads state from the hibernation file. Might simply be initializing the drive in such a way that the card doesn't show any symptoms. Thanks, BC for the comments.

jawanda56Have you tried removing and re-seating the card ? ?
Is the fan working properly ? ?Affirmative, Patio.

AGP card was re-seated and all connections were checked for firmness. Its fan works fine and dust is carefully removed.

Solve : Laptop can't run windows anymore!?

Answer»

Hp 8130us. with 2 hard drives.
XP Pro
AVG anti virus- SuperAntiSpyware-SB search & destroy

The machine has been working fine. HDDS are about 6 months old.
My daughter was on the web when suddenly windows just shut down.
Now, when I turn it on it will sort of boot up. It gets to the windows XP screen and windows shuts down immediately.
Goes to a screen that says Windows did not shut down normally... options to boot up in safe mode, or as the last KNOWN correct operation (or something like that).
I tried all the options. Nothing works.
During the start up you can press F10? and get to a set up page. It will stay there until you leave.

I tried reinstalling Windows. It goes through the part where it loads drivers. When it tries to start Windows it shuts down.
I THOUGHT it might be a hard drive so I took out the HDDS and reversed their positions and tried loading windows again but withe the same results.
Could it be a memory problem?
I'm at a loss. Any ideas?
Thanks,
JimWhat was she running when it shut down? A friend of mine had a similar issue with his Toshiba and it was because his kid cooked the GPU of the laptop playing video games that it barely supported, so when it went to load the graphics DRIVER the GPU would have a critical failure and windows would reboot. The GPU functioned enough to send text to screen, but as soon as Windows would load graphics crash and reboot. Knoppix also experienced same problems on this toshiba when loading the desktop.

A good diagnostic test for hardware would be to download and burn to a CD Knoppix Linux live distro and boot the laptop and run the laptop from this bootable live CD. You will then be able to tell if it is a hardware failure such as a GPU failure etc. Knoppix runs on about 99.9% of the systems out there with no problems. Problems mainly being with systems older than 6 years old of which limited driver support or brand new systems with chipsets that do not support generic drivers if a matching driver is not available.

If the laptop doesnt run that CD then its likely that the laptop has a serious hardware failure.

This CD also does not install anything to your system, it runs COMPLETELY off of the CD as a solid state read only operating system.

http://www.knoppix.org/

*If Knoppix runs fine then you likely have an issue with a hard drive, as for Knoppix does not require a HD to run. Go down to 1 drive instead of 2 and try again etc.

I also have heard of Windows updates causing problems with Software RAID systems. Did you have RAID running or just 2 drives for extra storage.Hi Dave,
She doesn't do the games. I think she was on Facebook when it went.
However, that used to be my machine and I frequently ran an RC flight simulator that worked it pretty hard. That was 6 months ago.
I thought hard drive also, that's why I switched them. I wouldn't think both drives would fail at the same time.
Currently my son took it to his house to see if he could figure it out. I'll see if I can get him to try the Knoppix thing.
Thanks,
Jim
Dave,
I just talked to my son. He already tried something similar to the Knoppix that you recommended. Some Linux thing, I can't remember now. He says it will run on that just fine!
The drives are set up as master for the OS and the slave for extra storage. I suggested putting the slave in the master position by itself. He says he tried that but it wouldn't boot up. I remember there was a jumper on one of the drives. I asum it was on the master? He didn't see it and so did not install the jumper when he tried just the 1 drive.
I will try to get the machine BACK tomorrow and try again.
Could I test the drives by putting them in an external holder and plug into the usb port on my good machine?
JimThat should work fine, just remember the jumpers.

Solve : Problem with Mouse?

Answer»

Machine is months old. HP desk top AMD Phenom X4 9150 Quad Core Processor. My mouse red light would not come on when i start my machine as such the mouse is not working. I have to unplug the mouse from its port plug in back in and then shut down machine and then start again in the exact order for the mouse to work. The mouse is a PS2. I bought an adapter and attach so the port will be USB but with no avail, the same is happening. PLEASE help me. This problem started the fist time i started to used windows. I has Vista.
Please help. Are you fully updated with windows......did you get drivers on CD with the mouse, if so reinstall them.....In device manager are you SEEING a yellow ! by your mouse hardware listing.

Have you tried another mouse?Windows is fully updated. This problem existed since the first time i used the machine. In device manager there is no yellow ! by the mouse hardware listing. I even tried update the mouse software but message "most updated software is already installed". I did not get any driver cd with mouse.Quote from: Karnac on June 22, 2009, 06:54:51 PM

Have you tried another mouse?
Is this machine still under warranty?....... if so , and a new mouse doesn't solve the issue, take it back and have the vendor fix it.well if another mouse works great, I have read an article about a virus, that can causes glitches in hardware, so you may have a virus, did you run a virus scan? If neither a new mouse nor you have a virus, works, then you have two solutions BRING it in to the shop and get them to repair it, or try running a diagnostics on CPUSorry, forgot, all HP comuters come with PC Doctor 5 (or older), it is in programs in your C: Drive, and an icon called profiler is the one you want to run, do this without any other windows open, run a full SYSTEMS scan on everything. The hdd one is to be thourough.

Solve : In-game sound is interfering with my mic?

Answer»

I'm using ventrillo when I PLAY On-line games games. Lately my in-game sound is interfering with my mic such that the mic picks up the in-game sound as well as mine making the output incomprehensible. I'm running with AMD athlon 64 Dual Core, Windows XP service pack 3, 2.21 GHz, Realtek High DEFINITION Audio, and Connectland headphone+mic.

Need help. Thanks!I think Vent has a checkbox in the configuration that allows for audio to cross to the mic side. Is this a clean install of Vent or were you playing with settings in which this could be a CONFIG issue? Or was this working FINE then one day audio crossed?

Also if your headset has a short in it the audio and mic circuits could be crossed, have you tried a different headset? It had been working fine before. But i guess this started after I installed the new version of Vent. Not very sure though.I CHECKED Vent and there's no check box for in-game sound.just tried another headset.. still the same.Quote

Any way to verify that, or try the previous version, again?

Solve : Laptop Cooling Solution...?

Answer»

Alright, so my laptop's RAM was reaching 167F while playing GTA:IV, CPU was getting nearly that hot too, GPU was getting to about 132F. So, this was my solution, a gutted VCR, a 92MM fan, a 12VDC WALL wart, and some duct tape. Worked great, dropped the RAM's peak temp to about 127F, GPU to about 116F, CPU to about 153F. Here are some pictures of this creation made out of sleep deprivation:

Now I'm sure your wondering, laptops can take temperatures like that, right? Wrong, the laptop's RAM was overheating and causing the video driver to crash, usually a BSOD. I couldn't figure out what was causing it at first, but then I realized that the GPU RELIES heavily on the RAM, it shares 256MB COMBINED with its 256MB of VRAM to increase performance. It also reduced chopping a great deal, Intel BASED systems will slow down and chug when they get hot. There like fat people, they run until they over heat then they slow down. Whereas AMD's are like athletes on steroids, they run until there hearts explode and never slow down or falter.

Oh, for those of you that don't know, my laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1720.

Core 2 Duo T7700 2.4GHz CPU
2GB DDR2 667 PC5300 RAM
nVidia GeForce 8600M GT 256MB 128 bit 16x PCI-E GPU
250GB SATA150 WD2500BEVS 250GB Western Digital Hard drive
TSSTCorp 8x DVD RW
17" High def widescreen (atleast I think its high def)
And uh.. I think that covers it aside from the not so great Intel Crestine Chipset.

you do know that for around $30 you could have gotten a laptop cooling pad that would have looked a lot better, taken up less space, and has a lot lower chance of electrocuting you you as it looks like you used duct tape instead of electrical tape to connect the wires from the fan to the wall plugFirst off, I'm broke, I got no job, no way of getting anywhere. Second, your more likely to get electrocuted by a phone cord than you are by a 12VDC wall wart. DC current is not lethal at 800 miliamps, heck, a car can't really electrocute you and its 12VDC @ 30-200A. And yeah, I know, duct tape is conductive, but you going to buy me a roll of electrical tape? Its not conductive enough to matter in this application. Besides, I have the laptop hooked to a external monitor, keyboard, and mouse. The laptop its self is being used as a desktop unless i take it places.

As a note, I have been shocked by a phone cord before, its 30V, and when its ringing, it feels like there's an evil massage chair inside your muscles pulsating. So I'm not really afraid of DC current because the only time I've ever been shocked by that is straight off of a car battery when my neighbor reconnected the battery in his car when i was in the middle of installing some POS stereo. Oh the joy that wasn't, I have also been shocked by 120VAC @ 30 and 60A, and also 240VAC at 60A, all of which sucked, but none of which have put fear in me of DC current. DC is relatively harmless, the only electrocutions that happen happen with AC electricity.

Forgot to mention, consider this stage a "beta", I'm going to build something better with spare fans later on. Something adjustable probably. For the CPU and GPU, did you try cleaning and re-applying the thermal paste? Also, did you clean out the dust etc in the heatsinks?
Of course as you've gone to these measures I would imagine you must've gone through the simple steps first, which then makes me wonder if there's some extreme temperature involved here (i.e. you live in an oven) or Dell's quality control is awful and the heat dissipation for this laptop is FUBAR.Yeah, the laptop doesn't dissipate heat well at all. GPU stays plenty cool, but the CPU has the same size heatsink as the GPU, and there both cooled by the same useless fan, not to mention the chipset has to be cooled by the CPU's heatsink as well, fail on dell's part. Oh well, great laptop if you can keep it from melting. And yeah, I cleaned the heatsink out a month or two ago, this thing is a pain to get to the heatsink. Added fresh AS5 too, helped a lot, before i cleaned it out it was getting to nearly 180F, now it only peaks at 160F, well, before it started getting dusty again, now its back up to nearly 170 without the cooler.

On a side note, the 92mm fan fell and hit something causing a blade to break, i replaced it with a 80mm fan that moves more air, but sounds like a vacuum. Only one I could find. I guess in another month or two the laptop'll need a dusting. I'll probably lap the heatsink too if I can without its mounting screws getting in the way. I've never replaced the thermal crap on the GPU, can't get the heatsink off 'cause I don't have the right size T bit. Oh, another note, I have speed step enabled, it overclocks my CPU up to 2.57GHz, from 2.4GHz, it might get as high as 2.6GHz, I dunno. The CPU has an adjustable multiplier, 6-13X so it can save power or guzzle it down if it needs too.

This is my CPU if your curious:

http://processorfinder.intel.com/details.aspx?sSpec=SLA43

According to Intel its good to 212F, but damned if I want to ever see it break 180 again. Heck, I've had to visit dell's website so many times I've memorized the service tag, CTGP3F1. I've got 517 days of warranty left though, so I'm good. I dunno if I'll renew it, I might retire this thing and get a new laptop, I'll have had it for uh, nearly five years by then. That is, if I've got any sort of income by then.Had to correct that one statement...

Quote

DC current is not lethal at 800 miliamps

As little as 10 milli-amps across the heart can kill most people.

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/When_is_electricity_lethal

Under the right conditions it is lethal! YET: Your chances of dying from a lighting bolt are far greater than an AC Adapter given normal situations.

You didnt have a box fan to rest the laptop on??? Get up with the times! jk Interesting thread.

Now the stoopid question lol

How did you get the temps in the first place.

I have more electrical tape in more colors then most people will use in a life time. lol You need some?

I have been shocked by a phone cord before, its 30V, and when its ringing, it feels like there's an evil massage chair inside your muscles pulsating.

Yeah, phone line can go out to -48 volts/DC...I'm pretty sure, though, that the ringing current is alternating current, to get that old time bell clapper to go back and forth! So, you were experiencing a/c when it rang.

Nice job -- and a good post to show how a lot of people here seem to think the money flows like water for everyone.

Besides, the build is good experience.Yeah, the VCR at one point was a VCR PC... Might become one again, I think I have a pic of it if you want to see... The power supply I had rigged up toasted.

Here was revision 1 of the VCR PC I built, XE783, damned if I know what the name means anymore, that was four years ago, man I wish I knew what happened to that thing, it was cool as *censored*, 512MB PC100 SDRAM, 40GB ATA100 HDD, 110W Bestek PSU, 733MHz Celeron, did its job as a compact web surfer in the summer of 2005.

http://s55.photobucket.com/albums/g139/Dead-Reckon/VCR%20PC/

Oh, and for the record, it was built of the guts out of an HP I found. Every piece of it, except for the VCR of course, it was, of course, a VCR... At one point... Oh, before I forget, the metal WORK was done with a hand held plumbing hacksaw, a drill, and a hammer.

Here was the second revision of my VCR PC, in the VCR I'm now using as a cooler:

http://s55.photobucket.com/albums/g139/Dead-Reckon/VCR%20PC%20R2/

I don't remember the specs, the parts where straight out of this prodject after this one fell and flew to pieces:

http://s55.photobucket.com/albums/g139/Dead-Reckon/Emerson%20Stereo%20PC/

It was some old gutted Emerson stereo I found on the curb and picked up deciding, "Why not?"

but now I have to unplug the mouse usb plug before I start my computer or the system will not boot up.

What does the computer do when you try to boot with the USB mouse plugged in?Have you checked your BIOS if USB Mouse support is enabled?

I think this thread should be MOVED to Hardware section. Thanks Aegis,When the mouse is plugged in and I turn on my computer I get a black blank screen with a dash flashing in the top left corner. That's strange, and not your fault. It's a mouse -- I've never seen a computer "care" about a mouse. It should just boot.

Do you have more than one USB port you can try?Yes and all ports have the same result.A local service center told me the usb ports were trying to power up 1st and this was holding up start up. I down loaded a driver update but that did'nt help.Maybe you could get it so the USB ports power up later...although I have no idea how lol!I think the computer is detecting the USB mouse as an external storage. But Im not exactly sure with this one. Have you checked your BIOS? SEE if USB mouse support or some thing like USB legacy mouse suppot is enabled.Perhaps someone at the Logitech forum can assist.

http://forums.logitech.com/logitech/I just had a flash of brilliance (everybody close their eyes, 'cause this is it for the rest of the year! ): Now, it could be that the PS/2 port quit working, as they sometimes do, but I wonder if reloading the motherboard drivers may help??

(I remembered a sound card, LAST year, where the person got sound if he plugged his speakers into the MICROPHONE jack. When he reinstalled drivers, all the physical ports were sorted correctly, again.)

Maybe, just maybe, reinstalling the m-board drivers may reawaken and reassign correct function to the ps/2 and usb ports.Quote from: Aegis on JUNE 20, 2009, 10:55:01 AM

Solve : RAM and USB 2.0... a couple of questions.?

My old PC is a 2001 Medion PCMT-5. It only has 512MB of RAM and USB 1.1 on the mobo.

Here are the mobo specs: http://www.msicomputer.com/product/detail_spec/MS6534.htm

Question 1
I am planning to add ANOTHER 512MB card to get 1GB of RAM.
It has a Siemens 512MB PC-133 card in one slot and the other slot is empty.
But what card do I buy, should I get the more expensive or the cheaper one?
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/8316098/Global-Memory-GMS5121331632-PC133-512MB-133MHz-SDRAM-168pin-DIMM-Computer-Memory/Product.html

Question 2
I only have USB 1.1 on the mobo's PORTS

http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/3274156/Belkin-Hi-Speed-USB-2-0-5-Port-PCI-Card/Product.html
If I add the above card, I will get USB 2.0 speeds if I use the card's USB ports?
Because I've asked my friends and I've got mixed RESPONSES (Some say yes, others say no because my mobo is USB 1.1).

Thanks in advanceEither RAM module will work...

Yes you will get 2.0 speeds to anything connected to the card...MBoard USB's will remain at 1.1Thanks for your quick reply.

Should I just buy the cheaper of the two sticks or WOULD it be more reliable etc if I brought the more expensive?

And, with PCI, is it universal or should I check some things beforehand? (Like voltages etc?)I would do a bit more searching on the RAM...you may find an even better deal...

And the PCI is universal for all products designed for it.
Good Luck.Is using No-Brand RAM recommended?

Because I found this stick:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/22918

It's about £22.50 with delivery charges.

But it seems to have no warranty nor does it have any information on the product.

I.. I...I'm not sure. Ok?No, its what my father says. The fact is thats were I stand. Course everything is flawed. If I understand Squallish correctly, Squall means to say that hardware can be broken even if it's new.yes we had established that, but my father says that it ether fails new or when its real old. The only time it wont is some were in the middle but after a little thought its just when ever then.Yeah.....I completely agree.....course you do. Hold on ... let me get this staight...

The PC will start up and the driver version shows up at BIOS start so the card is working fine right now. And when the windows icon COMES up , for loading , (little blue scroller for XP) it runs fine now right after TAT part it stops working?

are your system specs up to the job?
Do you have enough RAM?
Overheat on the Card?
Hard Disc damage ?

Itseems that the hard disc may be faulty if everything else is in order (sytem specs , heat). I thik that if you have bashed your PC around or subjected it to high static that you might have broken the hard disc. You might end up having to buy a new Hard disc and operating system if that is the case.

mabybe there is an incompatability with your computer's software and hardware? If you run some ancient tech now (windows ME or lower probably) then something might not like it.

Have you change d anthing else since installing the card or before installation that you would consider sigificant? Any unexpected slowdowns, shutdowns ?

Have you PERHAPS ran ovr your PC with a steamroller?
Jim we gave him corrct instructions there isnt anything we cant do anything at this point. It could be that Windows is trying to run your new card on the old video drivers.
Remove the old drivers (save them FIRST if you don't have them on a disk) then re-boot with the new card and install the new drivers.
You could also try booting with the new card in safe mode as a test first.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8400 Bx 2.66 [emailprotected] 4MB cache.
Video Card: EVGA Geforce GTX 280 1gb DDR3.
Power Supply: Apevia 680W Iceberg Power ATX 12V complaint, sli ready.
Memory: 4 sticks of CORSAIR XMS2 2GB ddr2 pc 8500 1066MHz. (my motherboard supports a total of 8 GB)
Harddrive: My old hardrive, MAxtor I believe of about 80 gb of space (yes pretty low).
Case: HAF 932 Cooler Master Full tower chassis.
OS: Legal Windows XP 64x.

Haven't overclocked anything, grounded myself and made sure to be extra careful with the hardware while installing. Have new, clean case and my system BOOTS up fine and will be on for a while. It is when I begin to play video games such as perhaps Race car GRID, CoA or WoW that my computer will randomly shutdown. Something to note, when installing, I transferred my old Hard drive from my previous custom built PC, I did not reinstall a clean version of windows, jsut stuck with what I had. The OS booted up and I used the CD to change up a few things like the ethernet drivers, that's about it. With that in mind, would anyone have any idea of why my system seems to be shutting down on me? It's pretty obvious it may be an overheating problem, but ive even tried using a huge fan I have in my room to see if it would provide efficient cooling, just wouldnt do it.

If anyone has any tips or ideas let me know, and ask any other questions if I didnt cover everything. Sounds DEFINITELY like an overheating issue, use Speedfan to monitor your temperatures.
Most likely culprit is your CPU heatsink - reseat it, cleaning off the old thermal paste and applying some new paste per the manufacturer's instructions.

Also, you'd be much better to do a fresh install of Windows - I don't think that would be causing your shutdown issues, but you may find problems later on.I mentioned that I think post start too look the same.Sorry ... didn't realise it was a double post, my mistake.A little surprised but that it is.Try these:
1. Try placing your PC in a very cool spot.
2. Add a Exaust Fan
3. Add a Third Party CPU cooler

I formatted my computer and now my sound doesn't work, my speakers still work. I went to the creative website I think but I can't find anywhere to download drivers.Do you know the make and model of the sound card? (or motherboard if it's on-board sound)No, someone built my computer and I'm not sure. All I know is it used to say Creative SB Live!...but I'm not sure.Your report you posted does say 'Creative SB Live! Series', but not specifically what model (there are 20-some different versions of that card). So here's what you'll need to do:

Look at the sound card itself. Somewhere along the top edge of the card (either on front or back, I can't remember) you should see a model number. It usually starts with 'SB' followed by 4 digits (5 digits on some models). So it should say something like SBxxxx.

Once you have that number, look at this page:
http://support.creative.com/kb/ShowArticle.aspx?url=http://203.211.142.197:80/srvs/cgi-bin/webcgi.exe/,/?st=394,e=0000000000143968444,k=9312,sxi=3,varset=ws:,case=10846

Click "Legacy", and locate your model number in that list. That will tell you exactly which model it is that you have.

Once you figure out the exact model name, go here:
http://support.creative.com/Products/product_list.aspx?catID=1&CatName=Sound+Blaster#

Click "Live!", then click the model name (either under Current or Archived Products) and then click 'Next'. The following page should have a download link to your specific model.

If you have any questions or trouble, please feel free to ask.

Solve : Power Supply 115 or 230??

Answer»

What determins which setting I should have my power SUPPLY on, 115 or 230?The WALL plug[ USA 115V] EUROPE [230V] Of course there are wall plugs in homes [USA] for AC units & other units. If in doubt use a volt meter.JohnW, Xavier has given you your answer which basically is "where you are using the computer".However the male plug on the end of the computer power cord will only fit into a 110v or a 220v (not both) the 220v plugs vary depending on the wattage capability but they are ALL different that the 110v male plug and won't go into a 110v outlet. If you are running the computer in a 220v COUNTRY and you have a 110v plug you will need to change it and then SELECT 220v on the rear choice switch.truenorth

Solve : Graphics Card and Internet Card Issues?

Answer»

Well,

Recently I got a new computer, moved it up stairs and bought a internet card for it. Everything was fine and great. Then I decided to buy a graphics card for it. Plugged it in all things are fine. The computer started and displayed but just before the login screen, it freezes.. everytime. But! When I take one card out and leave the other in, it works fine! I want to be able to have both cards in at the same time, anyone able to help?

-ThanksReturn the NIC card for a replacement...
ALSO try it in another slot if possible.well cards are fine.
and I only have 2 slotsHow do you know the cards are fine ? ?because whenever i take one out and put the other in it works fine. and then if i do it the other away around it still works so they clearly both work fine. It's possible the vid card is overheating with the other card installed next to it...is the fan operating properly ?Does the computer work in Safe Mode?indeed the fan is on and working, could it possibly be the power supply?no it still FAILS in safe mode tooDLoad install and run SpeedFan and post the results here...

Solve : Switching to analog sound?

Answer»

Hello. I am having a problem. The sound on my computer needs to be switched to analog in order to use my DVD drive. Right now it is on digital and everytime I try to watch a DVD, the sound cuts out.
Is there a way to switch from digital to analog? If so, I'd really appreciate it if somebody would let me know how to do it. =) I am honestly not very SMART when it comes to computers so the simpler, the better.
Thanks for any future replies. hotjoester,Welcome to CH forums. Yours is an intriguing question. I am not quite sure what it is you are getting in the way of sound from your computer speaker/headset and what it is that you want to get. However the further complication is that in your list of attributes you have beside O/S "unknown". Very strange that you don't know your operating system. I suspect it is either Windows XP or Vista. If it is Vista then there is a recognized problem with that O/S for "analog" audio. Here is the link which talks about the problems and some fixes. I believe we are going to NEED more details to help you with the problem. truenorth

thankyou! =)
i am actually using windows XP. i should have mentioned that in my original post. sorry about that!
my sound is completely fine when i'm listening to mp3 files or watching youtube videos. when i'm listening to a cd in my cd drive, it sounds great. all is WELL until i want to use my DVD drive. whether i play a cd in my DVD drive or a movie, the audio sounds horrible. it cuts out and distorts.
my dad's friend came over last night [claiming he could fix it] and we cleaned the dvd drive a few times. after cleaning it the fourth time with no results, he took a look at my sound settings and saw that the audio on my computer is digital. he claims that switching to analog will fix this problem.

hotjoester, Very interesting. All media be they CD or DVD disks record their data be it audio or video in "digital". It is the only thing they are capable of.The sound however ( the original source prior to disk transcription can be analog) but the program(sotware) that is used to record the "analog sound" to the disk MUST convert it to digital. (Don't confuse analog/digital with monaural/stereo/HI-fi). Your CD/DVD/ROM/rw's are only capable of reading or writing in digital format. Has this DVD drive ever functioned properly (for either watching or burning disks)? What software for the DVD RW are you using for listening/watching/burning on that device--list all if more than one. If you don't have it try downloading a free copy of VLC player and try that. Keep us informed.truenorthmy DVD drive burns CDs and DVDs without a problem and always has. playback in it though is another story. i don't even remember the last time i was able to watch a DVD in this drive.
different programs i've tried include:
Powerdvd
VLC
Windows Media Player
Real Player
and InterActual Player
all CD/s DVDs record in digital but audio playback from the drive can occur both through analog (straight from the drive to the sound circuitry, usually via a cable) or digitally (via the IDE cable).hojoester,That is a comprehensive list and does include most of the popular player/recorder programs.Up until recently my preferred player/burner for audio was "Musicmatch" (won't help you with the video however). Now i am using a commercial product by a COMPANY called "MAGIX" .It contains 3 components Audio/play/burn;video play/burn/modify;and photos modify/copy. I have had great results with it and rarely use anything else. I have a new suggestion and a new question. Can you view and hear DVDs created on the computer burner properly after their creation on any other DVD player (be it another computer or a stand alone DVD player)? If i am not mistaken all the player/burners in your list are free programs or came with the O/S so something i MIGHT suggest to try is remove all but one and then try to watch/listen to a DVD using that program and observe the result. If the problem is being created during the burning phase this likely won't resolve your problem but if it does play properly then it points likely to a problem with the chosen player or a conflict.goodluck, truenorth

Solve : Dedicated Graphics Card?

Answer»

Hi, I'm looking for a laptop which is has great GRAPHICS. I know you should have a dedicated video card or something, but I'm not sure which one that is. So, I need to know if either an "Intel GMA 4500MHD" or and "ATI Radeon HD3200, RS780M" are dedicated ones? Or which ones better...thanks.Laptop can't have dedicated (separate) video card. Laptops have video chips built into the motherboard.
Laptop external video card goes for about $500.Laptops can't have traditional dedicated graphics (i.e. a plug in card), correct.
USUALLY though, "dedicated graphics" on a laptop means a higher performance graphics chip, as opposed to one that's low-end and has little or no video MEMORY, etc.
The GMA 4500 and HD3200 are both INTEGRATED chips and won't be any good for modern games.
Do you have to use a laptop? A desktop for the same price will be much faster, or a desktop with the same performance will be much cheaper. Been there and done that - I spent a stupid amount of money on my laptop, and it's now worthless 3 years later. At the time a comparable desktop was less than half the price, and if I'd spent as much on a desktop I'd have got one that was at least twice as powerful.
That's not a sob story, it's just to make sure you know that gaming laptops are usually not a good idea, especially as they're not very upgradeable.

Solve : Microphone Troubles?

Answer»

First thing:I'm not sure if I am posting this in the correct forum, so if I'm in the WRONG place I apologize. Since i reformatted my computer I am unable to use any microphone. My computer just does not recognize it. I am using a Dell Inspiron 1521 running 32vista. I tried reinstalling the DRIVERS and have scoured over sound manager a dozen times to see if anything with disabled but I still cannot find the source of the problem. Please HELP!Go into DEVICE Manager:

Right click Computer > Manage > Device Manager

Are there any errors there? (Represented with an (i) over the device icon).Spedmonger, Under the heading of the "obvious" --are you sure that you are plugging the microphone into the correct female jack on the sound card? truenorthAttucally I was going to ask if it wasnt muted. Thought that truenorth was going to ask oh well. Check to see if its not plugged in the red female connector. Also go down to were your volume control icon is an double click see if mic isnt mention an check the settings there.WyattSoft:I did as you SAID, and I did not come back with any errors:
truenorth:Yes, I do have the correct female jack.
squall_01:I went into the settings, and there's is nothing on that would disable my mic.

I tried updating my drivers, but everything is update. Still no avail.Problem solved! I had to manually download the updated drivers from dell's website. Thank you for all your help!okay, glad that its working okay then.
