Solve : Which Laptop Would You Choose ??

Answer»

In a nutshell i will be using my laptop to watch movies, listen to music, planning on playing high graphics/quality previous, current and future games, run appz like photoshop, frontpage, burn dvds and cds at high fast/speed without leeching all of my system ram and cpu usage, want to connect my laptop to my tv to watch movies (with good quality/speed) from my notebook.I know that i have already posted something similar before. This time around its a bit different because i have done alot of research and narrowed my choices down. I am hoping to get honest opinions as to which laptop will suite my needs. PLEASE check out the following laptops and tell me if you were to choose which one would you buy and why?

Thx in advance for all the help. I am hoping to get tonz of replies :dSadly, it's hard to find someone who mkaes a good laptop... If anything on your list, I would say Gateway. They have better support than the other compainies from what I know. It's a bit more money, but you MAY find it worth it in the end. Stay away from Acer and HP. I don't trust either of those companies.

FlameI recently bought the Dell inspiron 6000... found an online coupon, went for the higher than average memory, video, processor and such... and until I just recently screwed it up... (see my only other post/yikes) am really happy with it... even playing elder scrolls-oblivion is pretty dang smooth for a little laptop, and with the addition of a soundcard, I get better sound than my home stereo.

Happy Hunting!Thx for the reply guys, because of your help i have narrowed down my choices to these two laptops. Can you advice which one is a better CHOICE and why ?

Thx in advanceWell, you made a close match. If you're not GOING to be doing much gaming, then this one is for you http://configure.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=ca&CS=CABSDT1&l=en&OC=OCINSP6402_FEAT_E2 ... The reason is becuase this laptop has on-board video. The other laptop would be better for you if you intend on gaming or watching DVDs and such.

Flame"256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory" That's an onboard video o0 are you sure ? How do u find out if its an oboard video or not. Doesnt the DESCRIPTION usually say something like integrated or something ?Oh sorry, got the links messed up lol If you're going to be gaming and watching DVDs, then the link I gave you above is the one for you. If you won't be doing much gaming or DVD watcheing, use the other link. I know that the other laptop is on-board, becuase it says "Integrated Intel Graphics".

Flame99% of laptops have the graphics onboard and they are NOT upgradable ever. Thx for the help everyone. I think i have decided on one now

Solve : Uninstall hard drive?

Answer»

I have a 5 year old Dell D8100 with ATA 100 interface for a Maxtor 5T060H6 hd. I recently installed a SATA controller in a PCI SLOT and installed a SATA drive (Maxtor 7L300S0) and formatted and installed Win XP Pro and I now boot to this drive. However, I don't know how to remove the IDE hd. Since it is connected as the master via the IDE cable, how do I uninstall it. I know I'm booting to the new drive, but occasionally the old hd turns on and runs for a while until it times out because I've told the system to turn off hd's after 15 min. The drive seems fine, except it is showing its age by making a whirring sound as well as it seems to slow down and speed up sometimes. I plan on building a new system in the NEXT year, and didn't want to spend money on another IDE drive, only to replace it with a SATA drive a few months from now.

This may be a simple problem for someone, but I'm still learning about hardware and have not been able to find out anything over the internet. Does the IDE cable settings have to be changed? I have the hd plugged into the IDE0 & a floppy, DVD player & CD burner into IDE1 as it came 5 year ago. Do I uninstall the hd in device manager, or is there another way?

I have tried to give all relevant info, but if I missed something, please let me know. I welcome any help on this matter. Thanks!
/meIf you have your pc set to boot to the SATA drive, then just turn it off remove the IDE Drive from the computer all together (unless you want to keep it in there for extra storage). If for some reason you want to keep it in there and just disable it... you can go into the BIOS and turn off just the primary IDE controller and even unplug the power to the drive so it doesn't spin up. Although.. if you're not going to use it.. just take it out. Thanks for that suggestion, but it does not work. I should have gone into that before, but I had already tried disconnecting the drive. but somehow the bios is still wanting to see it. I tried turning primary drive off in bios and it wont boot up. My new drive is set to boot, and it is set as drive C, W/ the old drive as H. Everything I've tried in bios won't work. Any other ideas...?

Yes I can leave it in, but with the whirring...I'd rather not. It's not real bad, but there's got to be a way!

What would happen if I disabled or uninstalled this drive in device manager?

Solve : Memory chip compatibility?

Answer»

Samsung 256MB 1rx16 pc2-4200s-444-12-c3
Samsung 256MB 1rx16 pc2-4200s-444-12-c1

Will there be any problem in pairing up this memory in a toshiba satilite laptop ? Note the C1 and C3 difference.

Thanks for any advise. What does Toshiba say on their support pages? That's what matters, not our opinion. Did you look at www.crucial.com?What does "CL" stand for?
CL stands for CAS (column address STROBE) latency, which is the number of clock cycles it takes before data starts to flow after a command is received. Low CAS latency at a given frequency is faster than high CAS latency at that same frequency. (For EXAMPLE, CAS2 is faster than CAS3.) However, lower CAS latency will NOT necessarily make your system faster. Your computer will only run as fast as the "slowest link" in your system, so you can't speed up your computer by adding memory that is faster than your CURRENT memory. The way to make your system faster is to add more megabytes (MB) of memory.

In general, we recommend using parts with the fastest speeds. This will give you the highest level of compatibility and future upgrade path.

If you don't know the CAS latency of the memory you currently have installed, don't worry; any of the modules listed in the Memory Advisor tool are guaranteed to work in your system.

Those sticks will probably work ......However , they would work at the speed of the slowest one.......
You should really check with Toshiba or as has been suggested at www.crucial.com

Solve : Graphics Card Upgrade??

Answer»

Hello,I just stepped up to a LCD MONITOR (Samsung 730B).I have it hooked up analog.I went to this because when I installed Google Earth it said my old monitor did not have enough pixels. However when I zoom in it is still very blurry.

My system is a Gateway,Athlon 1G,512MB of pc133ram,NVIDIA GeForce MX/MX 400 with 32mb of ram.
My question is how much better/clearer would this setup be if I stepped up to a better graphics card? Also which one under a $100 would be a good one to go with?Preferably under $75.I don't do any gaming I just WANT the Google earth to be clearer.ThanksYou seem to meet the system requirements ALREADY:

http://earth.google.com/download-earth.htmlYou can find plenty of cards under $75 that will be a major upgrade from your CURRENT card. For example, TAKE a look at the AGP cards being sold by TigerDirect.

Solve : Start up Problems?

Answer»

id like to start by saying thanks to anyone who helps me with this problem

ok, i just recently purchased parts for a new computer. im pretty good with putting them together from scratch, but this one has given me some trouble. i bought a Asus a8n-e motherboard with a stock 450-watt PSU, a Evga nVidia 7800Gt GRAPHICS card, 1 gig of RAM(2 sticks of 512), and a AMD 64-bit 3800+ 939 socket cpu. now i thought that the 450-watt was going to be enought, but i had heard rumors that the 7800Gt takes a sufficient amount to run. So on my fist set up i connected everything only to power up, and not get any reponse. so i sent it to a family friend technican to look at. he sent it back, saying it needed a bigger power supply, and that it would be easier to get one with a PCI-e connector already on it. So i went ahead and ordered a 580-watt PSU with 20+4 pin connector and a PCI-e connector. Now, when i go to power up the fans turn on and the light on the motherboard comes on, but there is no signal sent to the monitor keyboard or mouse. i tried to swap out different HDD's but to no AVAIL. There also in no beeping signal, like in terms of a beep code when i power up everything.Did the motherboard come with a manual? Does it say how large a PSU to use? Just covering the obvious here. ya, the motherboard does come with a manul, but i have yet to find a sepecification on the PSU requirement, but im assuming that 580 is more than neccessary. i mean, there is deffenently some power going to the mother board, because the light is lighting up. Everything else is lighting up as well, like the fans, they have LED's and those work. its just the video, the keyboard, and the mouse that refuse to power up, and i have tried different combinations of keyboards and different mouse's that i know work on other comupters.Strip it down to the basic - one RAM, plainest video card you can get, no drives and see if it will BOOT. Make sure the MB is not shorted out against the case. You don't want to introduce too many variables to a new installation all at once. If it doesn't work, it's difficult to tell where the problem lies.

Solve : computer shuts off during power up?

Answer»

I have a computer in our OFFICE. I really don't know what kind it is. It SAY "Lti" on the front of it, but anyways it was turned off last night for the first time in a long time and this mourning when I powered it on it started to turn on, made one BEEP and then shut off. I flipped the POWER switch in the back and tried it again same thing it just looses all power after it makes on beep. I thought it might be the power supply so I hooked up that power supply in another computer and and it worked fine. If anyone has any ideas I would appriciate it.

thanks
Is overheating a possibility?

FlameThis computer is not being over clocked. The fans seem to turn on for those few seconds that its on. It could be a possibility. I'm wondering if this could be a sign of a bad mother board. I don't know enough about motherboards to know if it could be this or not. The only thing I know for sure is that its not the power supply. What if you remove and reseat the RAM and all cards in the machine? If no joy, the next thing I would do is disconnect all the drives and and remove all of the cards except the video and see if it will boot. If it does, add one thing at a time until the culprit is found. If not I would test the RAM (www.memtest86.com) if possible in another machine. If that cannot be done, then the suspects are motherboard, CPU or RAM (going on your assertion that the PSU is good.

Perhaps a local shop could test the CPU. If OK, that would be the motherboard as the most likely suspect. Do you happen to know the processor type and speed? Do all of the fans, especially the CPU fan come on, at least initially, or is there enough time to see?
Thanks for the advice I'll give those a try. Both the CPU fan and the PSU fan come on for about 2-3 seconds before everything shuts off and it appears that there is no power, but if I flip the switch on the PSU I can GET it to come on for a couple more seconds. I'm not sure about the processor I'll have to get back to you on that, its not infront of me right now. Thanks again for the advice.

Solve : Stop the Stop Commands!?

Answer»

Alright so i have had this problem for a while now and it is really GETTING bad. My laptop will randomly shut off or go to that 'blue screen of DEATH' where it tells me it recieved a stop command or error and that there is something wrong with a new hardware installation. The only hardware I have put in was RAM that needed to be replaced because of bad sticks. I know its in there right and thats not the problem. I put in a brand new stick and the problems i previously had were significantly reduced but now my computer will often randomly shut off and occasionally wont restart for a short time period. Please help me, my other computer tech friends have so far been unable to fix it.Ummmm, do we get to know any specifics about the machine, age of it, operating system, or we just have to guess? Sorry, I was really trying to write it all down before it shut off and i forgot the specifics.
Ok so its a Intel pentium III IBM Thinkpad with Windows XP. I think its a 2002. It has 384 MB of RAM.
I have also found that running GAIM significantly encourages occurances of automatic shutdowns and makes it alot harder to get the computer restarted, if that helps at all.
If there is anything else you need to know just tell me. I WOULD very much appreciate any help. A Pentium III probably did not come with XP. Has it ever worked correctly with this O/S. Are we sure it is clean from malware/virii? Have you tested the RAM (www.memtest86.com) and the hard drive diagnostics from the IBM site or the manufacturer's web site (free downloads there, too.) Is the battery in good shape with no signs of injury? Same for the power adapter?

I would start with the diagnostics (you do have a FLOPPY drive, right? Also, if you could POST the 7 digit machine code (XXXX-XXX) from the bottom of the machine, we could identify what is is really comprised of.

Solve : Monitor goes black?

Answer»

So this problem started about two months ago and has slowly gotten worse.
I'll be playing various games on the computer and suddenly the screen will go black. In order to get it to work again, i have to turn the monitor off, wait a little while, then turn it on again. The computer isn't freezing because i can still hear game noise and such, just there is no picture. It seems to happen after the monitor has been on for a long time. The computer and Monitor are about three years old and aren't on warrenty anymore, so i can't get a replacement that way. This problem has never happened before, just started 2 months or so ago, even though i didn't do anything different then (change settings or whatever). It has gotten worse in the last few days, happening more often (as the temperature outside goes up in the spring/summer). So EARLIER today i aimed a FAN at the monitor and it didn't get hot, but the screen still went black. So then i thought it was the video card, so i openned the computer up and aimed another fan on that, keeping it cool. Then the black screen happened again, but even more frequently. I haven't updated the monitor drivers in a while, but it seems more like it is a heating issue. I'm out of ideas on what it could be and how to solve it.
It is a CTL 7Gx Monitor.i dont know of any monitors that overheat, ive never even heard of that before. but maybe thats just me.

neway, the best thing to do is to borrow another monitor and see if that monitor has the same problem. if it does, its either ur video card or it might be some sort of virus. It may be problems other than heat. Try that monitor on another MACHINE, and try another monitor on this machine to determine where the problem is. There are NO user servicable parts in a monitor, so if that is the problem you need to get another.

Hmmm, if no sound is coming out, how can you be sure "Media player plays music fine"?

Quote

my Speaker (i also tried Headphone) has no problem. Driver is installed.
You have no sound but you say that your speaker has no problem. How do you know that?

You message is full of illogical statements, isn't it?!
Sorry my english is not that good. Im just trying to describe the problem.

1. I don't know the problem (if i knew would i be asking?)
2. I used Windows Media Player, and it plays MP3 songs without any error? (u know, it plays file?) but i can't HEAR?
3. My speaker works fine with other devices (like my MD player)

All i mean is my Speaker is fine, my PC recognized the sound driver, but no sound is coming out! i can't hear anything?

Do you understand now? Try removing the drivers and reinstalling them.Open your volume control panel to see whether the box for Mute is checked for any types of sound input. If so, UNCHECK the box.Quote

Ok, ill try that and let you know...

Quote
Open your volume control panel to see whether the box for Mute is checked for any types of sound input. If so, uncheck the box.

Yes i tried that

All boxes are unchecked...I reinstalled the driver, but still now sound! :-/

Here is the IMAGE of my motherboard (i made it myself so ... )

Nothing is connected to this "audio" "thing" (i dont know what its called)

But it has nothing to do with onboard sound device right? My onboard sound device has 6 ports, but NONE works when i plugin speaker!
Access your CMOS Setup Utility so that you can see your BIOS settings and check to see whether onboard sound is disabled there. If it is, change it to Enabled and save the settings.

And, by the way, since this is a new PC, are you entitled to some tech support for a limited time?Contact the manufacturer. What make and model?

Solve : Help!! I screwed up and disabled my display!?

Answer»

I RECENTLY tried to install the latest driver for my ati video card, and in the process... (kept getting an error message... try loading a standard vga driver... but that's another post)

I accidentally not only disabled my video card, but disabled the onboard video as well

RESULT= I can no longer get my little laptop to display anything!

safe MODE does not work, enabling vga does not work, last known good configuration does not work, I am at a loss.

Nothing I've tried seems to be of any help, an there is obviously no microsoft troubleshooter for this KIND of problem.

Help me OBi-Wan you are my only hope!Have you accidentally switched it with the Fn keys? I'm not familiar with Dells, but many laptops have a Fn key combination that allows you to USE the the laptops monitor, and external monitor, or both. If external monitor is selected you won't see anything on the laptop screen.
If you have your setup or restore CD, try booting from that and see if you can restore the original graphics driver.Quote

I accidentally not only disabled my video card, but disabled the onboard video as well

Does that make sense? I don't think so. As far as I know, all laptops use onboard video. Or, at least, if they have a video card, then they probably don't have onboard video. There's be no need for the onboard video if it has a separate card. So, I'd bet you don't have both a video card and onboard video. But, I'd more likely bet you have no video card; you have onboard video.99% of laptops have only onboard video. The 1% that have a discrete card do not have onboard video. What make and model?

Solve : Installing HDD Into 6 Year OLd PC?!?!?!?

Answer» OK, I have recently been given the task of intalling a new seagate IDE hard drive into an old 500MHz machine.

I don't know what motherboard it's running, and I am having dificulty istalling a new HDD to replace the old one.

The old hard drive was a 7 Gig IDE drive.

The new one is 80gig, but still IDE.

The problem I am having is that when I go into bios to use the 'Detect Hard Drive' function, it lock's up. I just get 'Detecting Hard Drive' message for days.

Does anyone know of any settings I need to sort out to get the *censored* thing to work?

I know its vauge but if you can think of anything that I can do to help make things more spacific, just ASK me to do it and I will try my best.

Any help would be amazing!

Thanks, ChrisTry resseting the CMOS settings. The try redetecting your drive. It is aslo possible to have mis terminated the new drive. New drives often come with the Cable select termination and older computers dont support it. If your CD is set to Slave on the same cable and the Drive is set to Cable select it aint gona work. *censored* its hard to type with a broken finger.Make sure the jumpers are set correctly (like to match the one being replaced). My last Seagate came set for Cable Select (CS) as the default.

It is possible that the old computer has a BIOS limitation that will not allow you to use the full drive. In that case, use the overlay software software from Seagate that came with the drive. The drive didn't come with any software at all. What can I do?Use something like SiSoft Sandra (free) to determine your motherboard make and model. Then look on the motherboard vendor's web site for a BIOS upgrade. A HD limit (typically 30GB) may have been fixed.

Be careful about the BIOS upgrade, since if you get it wrong, you will render your motherboard useless. Are U replacing the Old HD or adding to it ?... Master/slave MIGHT have something to do with prob...afterall ( only 6 Years old !!!...but it seems a Small CAP for so young !!!! doesent it ?? )...What Operating system do U have Plug n play should kick in ?...If IM wrong guys sorry...( Just tryin to help !!!)....cheers!!!Quote
The drive didn't come with any software at all. What can I do?
Visit Seagate's website; plenty of info there and downloadable software tools. Re: JUMPER settings: ATA Jumper SettingsIf you can do it without a software overlay that is always preferable.

Solve : Can a 3 1/2" non-formatted disk be opened??

Answer»

Greetings,

I copied some information to a 3 1/2" disk on one computer. I am now at another computer and am trying to open it. There is an error message that appears that the disk has not been formatted. I guess I did not format the disk before I copied the information over.

Is there a way for me to open this non-formatted disk? - I desperately need the files off of it. It appears that if I choose to 'format it now' I will loose all the information currently on the disk.

Regards,

sunnyoneYou wouldn't have been able to copy anything to the disk if it hadn't already been formatted. So something has gone wrong during or after the copying. You either have a faulty floppy disk, or one of your drives is faulty. It might be as simple as them needing a clean, but it has been along time since I've seen any floppy drive cleaners, with the format becoming more and more obsolete. If you can get hold of some, try that first.

I presume you still have the original data somewhere?Thank you. Not sure how long it's been since this floppy has been used...so I am guessing a cleaning is a good route. Yes, I have the original data, but it's on a computer 1/2 HR. drive from me.

Thank you so much for your response. I'll try a little cleaning and then get in the car and hope another copy of the data WORKS on this dinosaur of a machine! Thanks again...what a great site.No problem! Incidentally, if I'm ever forced to use floppies to transport something, I always use THREE... For all three to malfunction would be seriously bad luck, right? True then I have really bad luck, well anyway your floppy is bad. I work with floppy disks all the time and encounter this problem with disks that have been excposed to high magnetic RADIATION for a long period of time. It reshapes and difforms the sectors of the disk makeing it possible for the computer to write on the disk but as soon as the head is removed the sectors return to thier deformed shape. This can be caused by an number of things includeing but not limeted to: Sitting out in the sun to long, siting ontop of or under a monitor, sitting next to an electric drier(guilty), being left near a TV or taken unprotected near a powerplant. Also something as simple as the transformer outside your house blows up will do it. WARNING! You canot simply format a disk on a mac then use it in a PC if this is the case I will provide a utility that will allow such a thing to happen. There also can be issues with a floppy formatted on a Winn98 machine not being readable onn XP machines, due to differences in the formatting processes in the OS. Is this the case with the floppy in question? Thanks for the information everyone. It's PC to a PC. Need to check if the 'from' computer is XP or 98 - mine is XP - this could be the problem if it is 98.

Tomorrow I go to get the data and will try again. If I have no more trouble, I will know it was the disk. If I still have trouble, I'll be back online for help!

Regards,

sunnyoneIf so, take an XP formatted floppy and copy the data to it on the 98 machine. No PROBLEMS going this way that I am aware of.

Solve : Microphone help...?

Hi, I've got about 5 different mics and none of them seem to work properly on my computer, I try to use sound recorder and msn with them and they are really quiet, I basically can't use it on MSN because I get the error message "Your Voice Clip was not sent because no sound was detected in the recording." And if I want to use sound recorder I have to almost scream to get any sound. As far as I know all the volume settings are turned up to the highest.
Also when I try and do a hardware test I get that "an error occurred during directplay voice setup. the error code is 0x80004005"
I don't know anything about computers... Oh and this is my computer if you want to see it - http://www.packardbell.co.nz/products/product_configs.asp?CID=9&MID=20&SpecID=445

Thankshelpneedednow...... Has your mic , or headset ever worked properly ?
You mentioned msn........ can you sign into msn messenger and the click tools and then select audio and video set up ...... before you go any further please check to see if you have your mic and speakers plugged in the correct places ........ Oh yes and BTW ..... do you have the proper drivers for your sound card . Now then , back to audio and video setup . So the setup page appears ...follow the instructions re anything thats open ..... click next , now in the speaker setup what is highlited in the box ? ....... If you are using a headset , do you have that CHECKED ... ? Now click on play sound ......... do you hear the sound ok and are you able to use the slider to adjust the volume ?
Now on to the mic setup .......what is in the highlited box for select the mic?
Do you see any green in the sound level indicator ? When you speak normaly into the mic does the level increase ?

If you can answer these questions we can proceed

I don't know, this is the first TIME I have tried them, I have five different new ones with all the same result.

"can you sign into msn messenger and the click tools and then select audio and video set up ...... before you go any further please check to see if you have your mic and speakers plugged in the correct places"
I have done that and I am quite sure the mic/speakers are plugged in correctly.

"do you have the proper drivers for your sound card"
I am not sure, the computer is not very old, I assumed they would be the proper ones when I bought it.

now in the speaker setup what is highlited in the box ?

Yes

Realtek HD Audio rear input

Do you see any green in the sound level indicator ? When you speak normaly into the mic does the level increase ?
I can see the green, the level increases but only slightly, to get it to go into yellow basically I have to yellBring up the volume control (usually Start-->Programs-->Accessories-->Entertainment-->Volume control). Click Options-->Properties. Under "Adjust volume for", select "Recording". Click OK. ENSURE the Microphone channel is SELECTED, and slide the volume slider all the way up. That should make a huge DIFFERENCE. Adjust the slider to suit your needs.Quote

Solve : 56K fax modem?

Answer»

hey,

What brand of fax modem whould you SUGEST for reliability?

thanx,

I WOULD suggest whatever you can find cheap... Personally, I use my printer which has a fax built-in. It's not a complicated hardware... anything will do.The best would be an external SERIAL port modem in my book, but it lives outside the computer. Cost is about $75:

Next would be a hardware controlled PCI modem like the US Robotics 56K Performance Pro, but it runs about $75.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16825104131

Usable would be any Winmodem which use some of your PROCESSOR power, but usually works OK and are in the $10-15 range. Available everywhere. Cheap and usually work OK.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16825134006

I would not get a USB modem under any circumstance!

Solve : Computer Parts??????????

Answer»

I am trying to experiment on building myself a desktop pc and was curious if anyone in here knows where I can get cheap computer parts? It depends on what kind of parts you are looking for and if you WANT new or used. Please elaborate on the full project.
http://www.ncix.com

its where i bought all my computer parts. i saved at least $5 on each part. times that buy 12-14 parts, thats a savings of at least $60.
Online auction, ebay.com, can be a good source for used parts. However, don't assume the PRICES there will always be lower than buying new from other sources; you should still do some price comparison. And, if you're unfamiliar with buying on ebay, take some time to LEARN the ropes.

Two online sources I've used and have quite satisfied with are newegg.com and tigerdirect.com.Tigerdirect has some good prices. Sometimes have to do REBATES, but good prices. Good service too. Do a lot off Ebay, but you have to do a lot of comparisons with other places.

Solve : I've run into a lot of problems, but this is crazy?

Answer»

I hope someone can help me with this one, because I am stunned.

I'm helping my father with a very strange problem. It all happened when his PC first turned off out of nowhere. Then when he tried to turn it back on, it would turn on, but there was no output to the monitor. Luckily it was time for me to COME home for spring break, and I could help him, but I was stumped.

Now I went on a goose chase changing out all the PARTS I could, after finding out that it was not the video card's problem either. He wanted to upgrade anyways so it was fine. I'm going to list all the NEW THINGS and then you will see why it makes no sense for this to not work.

1. Socket 754 Board (NEW)
2. AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (NEW)
3. 1024 MB DDR RAM (NEW)
4. 60 GB HDD (OLD)
5. 350W Power Supply (OLD)
6. GeForce MX 420 (very old, but same problem exists even when card is taken out)

There still is no feed to the monitor even if I switch the video output to the onboard video, where as I thought it was just a simple video card frying. I couldn't see the HDD or the power supply preventing the computer from outputting video, so I think it's not a video problem at all, because it seems like the hard drive isn't spinning, but even if they hard drive wouldn't work, it would still go to the BIOS on the motherboard. I've fixed a lot of problems, but this one is KILLER. Maybe it's just a really simple problem I don't know.

Any suggestions?
Thanks so muchSo the symptoms are "no video"? At all? Did you plug in the power to the monitor without plugging in the video cable to see if it has the "No Input" message? Meaning.. does the monitor work on it's own? And then if it does, you're saying that when you plug in the signal cable, it just goes blank?psuyes i forgot to mention that, just to eliminate the case of something being wrong with the monitor I plugged it up to another computer and it worked fine

and yes I get the no input message on the monitorHmm. that is strange.. You've replaced the mb, processor, memory, and attempted to run on the old onboard video... yet still no signal?

I would imagine if it were a psu going bad, it should still have enough juice for the onboard video...

Having tested the monitor on another system you've proven the monitor is good.. and having replaced the mb... you've ruled out the video subsystem, pins, and anything else associated with the board.. and the memory is sometimes a culprit.. but you said you replaced that... So.. dang.. I suggest you reset the bios, reseat everything putting in only the absolute necessary components.. ie. one stick of ram, the cpu, and mb... attach the monitor and see what you get. Let us know what works in the end... GL.no post --> psui've told my dad to go ahead and replace the psu and i'll let you all know what happens

Solve : My computer can't seem to handle 512MB ram! Help??

Answer»

I'm running a Windows XP Pro on an Intel Pentium 4 Processor....(first time poster, so I'm not quite sure how much info you need to help me out! ^^)

So, the problem is this: my computer can't seem to handle two 256mB ram sticks nowadays. Before, it could--but I recently tried to replace one because the last one didn't seem to be working, and now the computer doesn't even load up when I have two ram disks in there. If I only have one, it works fine. But with two, it won't even get PASSED the specs screen when BOOTING. (And both ram sticks are new, so no problem there)

I did notice, however, that before, whenever the first boot screen popped up telling me how much ram I had, it said something along the vicinity of 480 mB, but now it reads 530-something. Could that be a problem? Because I know on my other computer, I have two ram sticks both 256mB and the specs read 480 mB, and it works fine.

Can anyone solve this mystery? I really need help!

Thanks!

~liathDoes it work with just the new one? Your new one may be faulty.Yeah, I tried them both separately, and both on each of the two slots. Basically, all the pieces of hardware are working....

But then again, aren't...

It's driving me crazy! What is the computer make/model? What are the specifics on the RAM? Where did you get it?My motherboard is a P4vMM2 from EliteGroup (is this what you're asking for?)

The ram sticks I'm using are two DDR-400 256mB sticks..Are they identical in all characteristics? Not just speed.

If the last one didn't work, and this one doesn't, perhaps the problem is with the motherboard.Quote

The 480MB reading is a clear indication your system uses ONBOARD video and is set to allocate 32MB of the total/physical 512MB installed RAM to the video adapter function of your computer. Thus, 512MB minus 32MB equals 480MB, and that's what Windows will show as the amount of RAM in My Computer, Properties.
Are both sticks the same BRAND. This is the crucial for your motherboard. went to the elite group and did not FIND any specs for compatible memory for your board. I have had 2 different brands with the same specs in a machine and it did not work. Purchased the recommended memory for my M/B and it worked.
Hope this helps!!

Solve : Video goes black before XP loads?

Answer»

I have a brand new (recieved on May 5th) Dell Inspiron E1705 with 1.83Ghz Dual-Core Processor, 1Gb Ram and a 256MB ATI MOBILITY RADEON X1400 HyperMemory video card.

Last week everything was working great, I POWERED down the computer, shut the screen and when I went to restart the computer the Bios screen came up but then the screen went black during the Windows XP loading screen. I heard the tones once windows booted up. I shut down the computer, hooked up an external monitor, and everything worked fine (i.e. I watched windows load on the external monitor)

Anyways, I contacted Dell and they sent a guy out to my house to replace the LCD screen. He replaced it and everything worked for about 1 day. But once I powered the laptop down and shut the screen, then opened it again to reboot the video went black again. I ran the PSA diagnostic and it said that "the graphics test failed due to no input from user", but all the other TESTS passed

I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem or may know what is going on? I'm assuming it's not the LCD screen considering a brand new one worked only for one day. Could it be a sensor on the latch, meaning it's going black because it "thinks" the screen is closed? The computer is still under warranty so I can just send it back, but I was hoping someone may have some other suggestions. Thanks!ntsheehy....... PHONE ........ DELL thats what the warranty is all about .......In fact , I would be asking for a complete replacement machine ........
Don't fiddle with the thing just have it replaced ........

Solve : How to enable USB boot on Compaq NC6000?

Answer»

I'm trying to enable USB booting on my Compaq NC6000. I want to be able to boot from a USB Hard Drive. In the BIOS, I've enabled USB Legacy support and MultiBoot. When the computer reboots, I select USB Hard Drive disk option. The screen GOES black with a blinking cursor.

Both DRIVES, the ORIGINAL and the USB drive, are both Toshiba. The original that came with the laptop is a 40GB. The USB drive is 120GB. The USB drive is from another notebook and works FINE.

I can see the USB drive fine from the NC6000 when just a USB drive. I can see the drive fine when it is directly plugged in to my other laptop. When it's a USB boot drive, nothing happens.

I've disconnected the notebook harddrive with the same results.

HP Tech chat support got me this far but gave up. They said my USB drive is not compatible which I don't believe. Any ideas? How old is this computer? How old is the laptop? Sometimes older computers, or some computers even today have motherboards that do not support booting from an external device. I know my old computer doesn't support it.

FlameIt's about 6 months old and is pretty MUCH top of the line. It supports USB boot according to HP/Compaq.

This is on my desktop its a Compaq Presario 7470.roba_ent....What do you mean "someone" ...... is this pc at home or at work.....?
If its at home it must be someone in your FAMILY ............

dl65
im pretty sure its either ur family, or a friend playing a prank, that locked u out (if its a home PC that is). either way, just KINDLY ask ur parents, brother/sister, or friend to tell u the password. unless they locked u out on PURPOSE and u just posted here to get US to tell u how to get around it. . and if its for ur work...get ur employer to fix it. i have a compaq presario too and a while back it started acting up so i was gonna log out then back in and it kept saying the password was incorrect and i kept trying but it kept saying it and i didn't change the password and nobody else was around! it was really odd and then it started going into more weird stuff so i did a system recovery thing and it restored it to just like it was when i bought it... so i lost just about everything i had on it but thats better than loosing the whole computer and it's working fine today and i have all my stuff on there once again

Solve : My sound keeps on randomly muting all..what to do??

Answer»

Hey, I'm new to this, and i have a question..

Lately, my sound keeps on muting all in the "volume" control in the TASKBAR. What may be the problem?

I have Windows 2000 Professional... and i have no idea what other things you might need. I think I have onboard sound. I know, I'm a little vauge, but I'm new to the computer world. If you need any other specs about my PC, just tell me how to get the info.

Jusy email me or post on this forum

Any help is appreciated.. THANKS

-Karl
hey karl. i gotta couple of questions...

1. does it mute the volume at random intervals?
2. does it mute the volume on a certain file? (movie, music.etc.)
3.can u unmute it?
4.and will it mute itself again even after u unmuted it?

P.S.

START>PROGRAMS>ACCESSORIES>SYSTEMS TOOLS>SYSTEM INFORMATION

thats how u find the specs of UR computer. Do you have a fancy keyboard with multimedia keys?Homer-
1. It seems to mute at random times, when i'm online i check the taskbar, and yes it does mute at random intervals.
2. No, it does for pretty much every file, When I'm on a game it seems to stay muted or not, it doesnt go back and fourth as often.
3. Yes
4. Yes
oh, and thanks for the P.S. if you need any certian info, i now know where to get it

-robpomeroy
No, i have a pretty basic compaq keyboard...It serves the purpose..although i DO have a wireless mouse

thanks for the concernhmm... with all this new info my best bet would be a virus, software issue, or driver issue. its not ur motherboard cause it wouldnt be muting itself, it just plain wouldnt work . i also really doubt its a virus, but hey, it doenst hurt to check

here are some solutions...

1. do a virus scan
2. do a spyware scan
3. DOWNLOAD and run ccleaner ( cleans up garbage, u might also want to run the registry cleaner also) u can download ccleaner from here http://www.ccleaner.com/
4. download and run hijack this and post a log here (download hijack this from here http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
5. if u still have ur cd that came w/ ur motherboard, reinstall the onboard sound card driver
6. if not, go to ur motherboard manufacturers website and download their latest onboard sound card driver.

this is listed in priority. ( start from the top and work ur way down, testing each step to see if it fixed the problem)

Solve : 3GB Ram Dual Channel at 1T??

Answer»

Does anyone know if it's POSSIBLE to run 3GB of ram dual CHANNEL at 1T? i currently have 2x1GB in dual channel at 1T and I'm assuming to keep dual channel i'll have to get 2x512MB? i just haven't heard anything about running 3gb at 1T... i've heard it can't happen at 4GB, it drops to 2T, but not SURE about 3... can anyone help me out? thanks.well i GOT my answer on another forum so i thought i would pass it along... at this point 3gb of ram is a bad IDEA unless you need it... need it meaning your computer actually uses more than 2gb commonly and you start using virtual ram. this is especially true with amd processors. upgrading above 2gb, depending on the quality of ram you buy, will more than likely decrease your performance because you'll lose the 1T timing and go to 2T and you may or may not lose dual channel depending on how you upgrade. thanks.

Solve : Canon Printer Problem?

Answer»

I have a problem with my Canon Printer. I went to their web site, and asked their Tech Support for help, but they said the answer COULD take up to 30 days, and suggested I contact this forum.

I have a Canon Multipass F30 Printer. It will not print colors correctly. I have cleaned the Printhead, both with the installed cleaning option., and with a Q-tip soaked in alcohol; with no effect. I have aligned the printhead, again with no effect.

When I print a nozzle pattern, the position labelled "C" shows a number of vertical lines on the top half of the rectangle printed, and a solid color on the lower half. The other rectangles - "A", "B, etc. appear to print correctly as solid rectangles.

The problem is not with the printer cartridges. I switched cartridges, and "C" still shows faulty printing.

What is wrong, and how MAY it be CORRECTED?
Tom

The other details about the computer setup, OS, RAM, etc. seem to be irrelevant at this point, since the problem manifests itself even when the printer is not connected to a computerCanon referred you here? That's very interesting. Are they overworked? Lazy? Cheapskates? Or what?

Sounds like your print head is terminal. I'm afraid that writes off the printer, if it's a Canon. Note that with HPs, you get a new print head with every cartridge - so they're more expensive, but the printer tends to have a longer life.

Anyway, I would say this printer is probably beyond economic repair.Barefoot_Tom....... I would agree with Rob's answer , it does sound like the print head is toast .........
You original post has been moved to this LOCATION ...to AVOID confusion .....

dl65 Just curious. How old is that printer? Quote

Sounds like your print head is terminal. I'm afraid that writes off the printer, if it's a Canon.

I rather suspected that, but hoped for better news.
Thanks for the quick response, and I'll use the printer as a monument to poor design.

Solve : Help! Ethernet Adapter Confusion?

Answer»

Does anyone know what a "NE 2000 ISAPNP ETHERNET ADAPTER (GENERIC)" is and what kind of internet connection I can make with it? Someone gave us an old computer (running XP Professional) which I DISCOVERED this adapter was installed when I tried to hook up dial-up for my daughter and learned the modem had been removed. Can this card handle networking with my internet connection (cable broadband) if I get a router (wired or wireless)??
Any HELP would be greatly appreciated...Thanks Thomas:

An Ethernet adapter is for a wired network. The connector on the back of the computer will look like a phone jack, but LARGER. You can buy a cable for it at most electronics retail stores. The CAT 5 or CAT 6 Ethernet cable can be up to 100 meters long (from the computer to the router). You can use the Windows XP Network Setup Wizard to connect the the Internet through the router.

DocI've not done any research on this but the fact that it's ISA suggests that it may have a BNC connector.i've had nE2000 cards that had BNC and ethernet outputs, but I think they were 10 RATHER than 10/100 links. The model number is similar to an ISA card I have in my Win 98SE machine. My card is a Linksys LNE2000T, named Ether16 10BaseT LAN Card. It has an RJ45 jack and I have it connected to my router via CAT5 cable. It works fine; Internet connection speed is the same as my main computer (Win XP, onboard LAN).

The only way you're going to know for sure whether will work is to try it. If it does not work, a driver update might solve the problem. I don't know where you can get a driver for it, since the brand name is not indicated. I see Linksys has a driver for my old card, but I don't know whether that driver would be APPROPRIATE for your card.

If you can't get it to work and you have an empty PCI slot, you could get a network card for a PCI slot. Quote

I've not done any research on this but the fact that it's ISA suggests that it may have a BNC connector.

Good eye, Backdated. It might also be a 10 mbp Ethernet adapter. Installing a 100 mbps PCI Ethernet adapter should improve the speed.

Solve : Soundcards For Dell Machines-Help!?

Answer»

I have a DELL machine and need to get a new soundcard.I have heard that only certain types are compatible with dell machines.is this true?If yes any recommendations? If no,any recommendations?!!!
ThanksI've not heard this before, and I see no particular reason why it should be true. Choice of soundcard DEPENDS really on what you want it for. I don't SPECIALISE in hardware selection, so can't help you a lot. But I can tell you this: I recently bought a Soundblaster Audigy 2 PCI card (excellent in its day) second hand on eBay for £25 (about 45 bucks). Very good 7.1 (full surround sound) soundcard for very little money.

If you don't have a spare PCI slot, you'll need an external soundcard (USB). They are readily available these days.Any PCI soundcard will work in a Dell. This is a desktop, I PRESUME? Why are you needing to change your sound? What model # is this or POST your service tag # (on the machine or onscreen when you press the F2 key at boot) for more specific advice.Recommendation for a low cost card:

Here's what I have installed in my computer: CHAINTECH AV-512 Sound Card - Retail. Prior to installing it, I was using onboard sound. I've had this card for about a year now and have had no problems with it.

Solve : Rename into .avi format??

Answer»

Hi,

I accidentally deleted an .avi format VIDEO from the RECYCLE bin and restored it with a program called Restoration Version 2.5.14

Unfortunately, when i saved it to my desktop, it is just a file, that plays in Windows media player but it isnt recognised as a video file, so i cant convert it into a .vob because DivXtoDVD DOESNT recognise it.

Is there any way i can rename it or convert it back to a .avi file?

Thanksu should really ask this question in the "microsoft" or "software" section in the FORUM. this is definately not HARDWARE related.I deliberated over the choice of forum to post in and decided on this one merely because it said 'Computer Video' below the title, and because i saw a few video and audio related questions.

Thanks anyway

Solve : Wireless router or hub??

I have 2 computers (XP) and had a router (Linksys) to connect the second computer (in another room) to the existing DSL connection - it was a phone line router that they don't MAKE anymore. You should purchase an ADSL router that has at least two Ethernet ports. You do not need a hub, as they slow down your network as you add more computers, but a wired router allows each computer to connect at its maximum speed.

You can connect the router to one of the two Ethernet network adapter ports of the computer you mentioned (the port looks like a phone jack but is larger). If the second computer has an Ethernet network adapter, you can connect it to the router, too. You will need to purchase CAT 5 or CAT 6 Ethernet network cables (you can find them at most electronic retail stores).

Both computers connected to the router with the cables can be configured to share printers and connect to the Internet through the router. The Windows XP Network Setup Wizard on both computers should get them connected to each other and the Internet through the router with little effort.

I'd also recommend purchasing a router that has a built-in hardware firewall to give you added protection. You should have no problem finding one that will connect at least four computers (more if it is both an Ethernet and wireless router).

I highly recommend the 2Wire 1701HG. Its an awesom dsl MODEM and wireless router with a 4port switch. It also has a good firewall.

Check it out. It's pretty awesome.verify all the connection are properly connected... the IP address the DNS......

just set the second computer to obtain(automatically)

If you purchase a 4 port wireless router , it would be located in the room that your pc is located in . You would run the telephone line into the ADSL modem , then a cat 5 cable to the imput of the wireless router, then a cat cable from one of the router outputs to the ethernet card in your pc. Then in the other pc ..... You would have to install a wireless ethernet adapter card...(unless there is one already installed) on the other pc.
Once you get things going , you can create a network ....and be able to share the printer as well as share files if you wish.

Solve : No Sound in Windows XP Home w/ SP2?

Answer»

For over six months now, I've been without sound on my desktop, running Windows XP Home, with SP2. All updates are current.

Sound is mobo SoundMax, on a Gateway, 1.4 MHz, with 384 MB RAM.

Speakers are fine, and there are no indications of any problems, except that no sound comes from the speakers.

Here's what I've TRIED : Updating the drivers; uninstalling all software that uses any sound (I don't use anything remarkable - just Finale NotePad, and GuitarCoach); I'm not a gamer, so there's nothing there; rolling back SP2; and installing an external USB sound device. I've also tried unistalling the devices, and re-booting, thinking PNP would pick it up, but it didn't.

When I GO to Control PANEL -> Sounds and Audio Devices Properties -> Audio; the only playback device that is available is Line #n Modem Playback (or something like that). Even when I had the USB external sound installed, it wasn't an available choice for sound playback. SoundMax Digital Audio should be there, but it isn't. It is available as a choice in other device properties. Disabling the Half Duplex device, gives me no playback options whatsoever.

Short of rebuilding the hard drive, isn't there something else I can do to get my sound back? All that I have done, tells me in my gut, that a setting is wrong - but where? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Old Salt
With the Soundmax device drivers installed, what appears in the device manager? Right-click My Computer-->Properties-->Hardware. Device manager-->Sound video and game controllers - what is listed in that SECTION?Devices are - Audio and Video Codecs, Legacy Video Capture devices, SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio, and Unimodem Half Duplex Audio Device.

OK, I have WinXP and KUBUNTU Linux. When I boot, I am given the choice of all the different kinds of Linux or Windows XP. I'm told to use the arrow keys and hit enter to make a selection. However, my USB keyboard, for whatever reason, is disabled. NOTHING on it works. So, it times out and I get Linux. Which is great, except that I need to get into Windows. So, I dug through the garage and got out a PS/2 keyboard and plugged it in. It worked, but I want the USB keyboard to work there. Heck, if I can navigate CMOS and BIOS with my USB keyboard I should be able to do something later on... right?

But the story gets better. With two keyboards plugged in, I expected it to be like my two mice - they'd work synchronously. They do, but for some reason the Ctrl key starts rapid-firing and I have to unplug the PS/2 to get it to stop.

I'm doing a lot of switching back-and-forth between Windows and Linux until I get Konqueror set up properly. After that, I can just download and run my programs/patches/drivers, but until then I have to download them, make an image, burn to CD, pick it up in Linux, take a pic of the error message I get, burn it, go back into Windows... repeat... repeat...

My keyboard is a Zboard. The PS/2 is a generic model, don't even recognize the logo. I've been forced to go through a ritualistic plug in of the keyboard, boot, remove the keyboard...I trust that you have tried updating your mouse drivers? Tried updating XP with Microsoft Windows Updates? Scanned for viruses and Spyware, checked for compatibility issues, that sort of thing? Has this ever happened to you before?

FlameSorry, I can't help with this one. I have NEVER had a USB keyboard (and never want one, because of things like this!) Sadly, I've heard of USB keyboards having little issues like this. Most are resolved with simple driver updates however.

FlameUm... aren't drivers limited to the OS it's installed on? I'm talking about the screen where I choose OS's. I'm not SAYING it won't work; I am d/ling drivers (time to upgrade anyway) but I'm curious how that would work. I gotta know the how and why on everything I'm interested in.

Also, does it change anything that the extra features provided by the driver are only good in systems >= Windows 2000?This is not a driver issue. You're encountering this at the GRUB BOOTLOADER, aren't you? Have you TURNED on legacy USB keyboard support in your BIOS? If that doesn't fix it, google "GRUB USB keyboard" and you'll find lots on this subject.Oh.. And I thought all USB keyboards did that after POST. Which is why I always have a PS/2 on hand for reimaging pc's. The USB keyboards I have always go silent before windows loads and initialize the bus. I thought that was normal. Thanks, guys. USB keyboard working as expected now. I thought of Google, but tidn't know what to search for. The closest I could get was "USB keyboard after BIOS lock up". That wouldn't get many relevant results... ;P

Thanks again.

How did you clean it up? That sounds like cause and effect to me.

Solve : 2 of 4 partitins of my 250gb no longer detected..?

Answer»

I'm USING XP Home installed on an 80 GB. I then use a Maxtor 250 GB for all my storage almost 1 yr old. It's atached to an ATA/133 Contoller. The drive is divided into 4 partitions. Two at 50 GB's and two at 75 GB's. It's been working fine until a moth ago. Now I can only detect the two 50 GB partitions. I tried re-installing the Contoller software to no avail. I plug the drive into my CD's position and the reading is still only the two 50 GB partitions.

Couldn't find any other posts pertaining quit to this. I'm wondering if for some reason the driver is failing and I'm running into the common 130 GB limitation and therefore only detecting what the PC is capable of.

Any suggestions?

Thanks
Timlook for any BIOS updates for your computer. Thanks Silencer,
I will check the ASUS website, but why would I have not had to update the BIOS previously?
It has been working fine for nearly a year.

Thanks again for the suggestion.
tim

you said it only detects the two 50 gig.. Is that under Disk management? If so.. what does it say is there for the remaining disk space?Hi Guy,

It shows exactly the same. As if there were only the two 50 gb partitions and the remaining 150 gb didn't even exist. Strange!

Now...I may have done something else as well because although it still shows up as stated above when connected to my CD drive spot, (with only the two 50's) the computer freezes on startup when I connect the HD to the PCI controller. It recognizes the model of the HD, and goes through the entire process, then when "XP STARTING Up" displays....the screen goes black, and stays black for about 30 seconds then tries to re-start and just keeps repeating the process until I power down with the power button, and disconnect the drive from the PCI Contoller. When I plug it back into the CD slot...it starts normally and reads...once again the two 50 gb partitions, and only those two!

Thanks for trying to help.
tim

The drive may be failing. I would download and run the free diagnostics from the manufacturer's web site pronto.

Hello, I purchased more memory cards to UPGRADE my old computer. After I installed them I went to turn on my computer and i hear 3 loud beeps. The computer sounds like its running, and lights up but my monitor will not work nor will my keyboard or mouse light up.
Any ideas?

Thanks!!!! :-?Jediashe:

The three beeps likely means a memory error. If this is an old computer and they are SIMMs, you must install them in pairs, so you will have to install a fourth one. If this is a newer computer, you have either installed them incorrectly, or you have purchased the wrong kind of DIMMs. Make sure you have purchased the correct DIMMs. You might bring one that came with your computer to the retail store and show it to the sales person and ask her to find others that are of the same type (for example, if your computer has PC-100s then you need more PC-100 (or compatible) DIMMs.

DocAnd some older machines require low density (older) RAM rather than the newer high density chips.

Why don't you post your computer or mootherboard make/model as well as what you bought. Be as descriptive as possible.Hi, thanks, why WONT my monitor work now though?
This computer thats i;m having the PROBLEMS with is my daughters computer which she uses for games, its a hp pavilion 6640c , amd k6-2 500mhz processor, 64md sdram, (i have 15gb hard drive.
I have four slots for memory in the computer, i have three different memory cards. I got another card because the computer was saying it only had 52 megs of memory which it should have had more

here what memory cards i have:
pc100-322-620 (64mbs)
kvrpc100-/128-r

I;m not waht else you need:)

Thanks AgainYou can go to crucial.com to SEE EXACTLY what that machine needs. In your case it appears that machine takes a proprietary RAM that is unavailable, at least through them. On another site I found:

"Your Hewlett-Packard Pavilion 6640C only supports MODULES made with a specific type of chip. Should you find what seems to be the exact same memory elsewhere for a lower price, it is very possible that the cheaper memory will not work in your computer."

Here are some links to learn more. I am certain that the memory you got will never work. Good luck.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=pavilion+6640c+memory&btnG=Search

Th weird thing is that it was working fine today, It just gave me an error that it didnt have enough memory so i go tthe additional memory.
Now the monitor is not working at all. And i just tried to star up the computer and now there is no power at all... I dont know if i should just throw this thing in the garbage or take it somone and see if they can fix it...Make sure the one good (pre-existing) RAM is in there correctly and in the slot nearest the processor. Remove and reseat it. It could be that other things have failed to, but if it was working before....

Solve : Monitor Trouble?

Answer»

I am having trouble with three monitors at work. I have a Matrox etv card in all three. Suddenly, when I TURN on my pc's in the morning, all three monitors when they get into windows show vertical LINES, and are very blurry. After about 15 minutes, they slowly get back to normal and are very sharp. They are fine the rest of the day. This only happens upon boot up. All monitors are 17 inch viewsonic's. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks. How old are the monitors? Are they on metal shelves? Any magnets nearby? Have you scanned for viruses and Spyware? Can you try using a different MONITOR from those three on one of the computers so we can see what's causing the issue? Have you or anyone else made any changes to your system recently?

FlameThe monitors are three years old. They are each on a monitor ARM on my dental CHAIRS. There are no magnets around that I am aware of. There is no internet connection, and no changes to the system that I am aware of. I have not tried attaching my laptop to the monitor yet.

Solve : optical drives not working correctly?

my dvdrw/cdrw and my cdrw/dvdrom drives stopped being able to record they get over half way or to 99% then they stop saying that it could not complete the burn. i have reinstalled the drivers, tried cdr's, cdrw's, and dvdr in both drives. none work. i have tried music, and photographs also just some data. all the same. i can still play games and watch movies, just not burn. i have tried drag and drop burning, and nero all with the same results. i dont know what to do.

i am running a gateway 7200x, 3.4gz, 1gig ram, 128 mb ati graphics, xp home w/sp2. has anyone had this problem before or know of a solution. thanks

tmmldid you try to reinstall your burning softwarei have tried nero, Media player, burn to disk, and just regular burning. nothing completes. i dont think that its a SOFTWARE problem, but i may be mistaken. What's running in the background?
Are the drives PROPERLY connected?
Are they in PIO mode?
Are you virus/malware free?i have webroot spy sweeper, norton anitvi06, micosoft antispyware, adware, and spybot. webroot, norton, are on startup. the others i run about twice a week. I have checked the connections twice and cleaned the drives.

whats PIO mode

when i am burning nothing else us running.

tmmlCould you try using ROXIO Easy CD Creator? That program has not failed me as of yet.i have never used it. i ll try and find it.

tmmlPIO = Programmed I/O which is a very basic method of data transfer over the IDE/ATA INTERFACE. Windows often defaults to this mode when problems arise. You can check this by OPENING Device Manager and selecting your secondary IDE controller. Right click, select Properties>Advanced.

If, as is highly likely, the two burners are on the same channel, a hardware fault in one can be reproduced in the other. Disconnect one at a time (Remove power and data cables) and try the other.did like you said here i what i got.

Device 0

Device Type: Auto Detection (shaded)
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Ultra DMA Mode 5

Device 1

Device Type: Auto Detection
Transfer Mode: DMA if available
Current Transfer Mode: Not Applicable

tmmli have also cleaned my tower completely, so its not overheating or dirt.

tmmlWhat's the exact error message you get each time? I did see where someone posted that when windows tries to autoplay at the end of burning, it stops the process... but I doubt thats whats happening here...sorry for the delay,

the error message is "could not complete writting project"

whats an underrun buffer error

cancel the help. i think that i am going to buy a new drive as one of the drives if just a dvd rom. so ill see.

Solve : Connecting laptop to Larger Monitor?

Answer»

My fujitsu lifebook p5020 has stopped connecting to my HP f2304 monitor.
The picture use to change from one screen to the other just by HOLDING function and hitting 9, but now the screen on the laptop goes blank for a second then goes back to normal and nothing shows up on the HP. I have tryed all types of things such as redownloading the fujitsu hot key software and I have tryed as may windows trouble shooting questions as I felt were relevant. I know that it is not the monitor because even if the computer wasn't hooked up to another monitor the screen would go blank as if it were.
If someone MIGHT have an idea of what to do it would be greatly appreciated. have you changed your resolution or background image recently? Try default background on your lcd before switching. ALSO look in the device manager and make sure there is only one driver loaded for your video. It does sound like a driver ISSUE... but check the lower resolutions and try it in safe mode as well..

Solve : HotSync problem with Palm IIIc?

Answer»

Hope this is the right venue for this subject.

System crashed. Had to reinstall XP pro. Was then unable to HotSync pda.
error message says: "COM 1 unavailable. HotSync manager will connect when it becomes available."

I have no idea how COM 1 became unavailable. To best of my knowledge I changed nothing when I reinstalled OS.

Used MS suggestions on "help" to find out whats wrong, how to fix, but they are so complicated Im not sure I did them CORRECTLY, but I did them several times with no results.

Asus P4P800 SE MB with only 1 com port so I cant change to another port.

If anyone can help I'll appreciate it. PDA unusable since 3/22, would like to get it running again.

Thanks in advance.

Yep.. sounds like a software problem. Check your device manager for Com 1, then ensure there are no modems installed on com 1. Sometimes you have to add com 1 back so you can use it. Also check your com settings under Hotsync manager. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try them today. Also tried another message to tech support at Asus. They didn't respond the last TIME. I'll POST their reply (if I get one). Also will post the results of your suggestions.Sorry to say those ideas didn't do anything. Got an answer from ASUS, who "thinks" the COM ! serial port failed on the motherboard, and seemed to shrug, suggesting I get another mb; if i wanted to try adding an aftermarket PCI serial card, and eliminated the on board one (no directions how) that might work.

I'm disappointed that they seemingly accept a 1 1/2 year or so life on the mother board and think I should as well. I doubt that my next mb will be from ASUS if that is their atititude.

But thanks for TRYING to help. Not sure what I'll do next.

Solve : Audio output back to mike?

Answer»

I have a SHEET music program (E-Stand) which records from the microphone and plays back while the music is dispayed. Is anyone aware of cables or electronics and corresponding settings which ALLOW the audio output from a playback program (such as MS Media player) to be redirected back into the microphone input at correct levels and impedences? The computer is a Gateway M280E CONVERTIBLE notebook 2.13mHz. The jack for the mike and phones is on the front of the laptop. There is a PCMCIA slot available. My understanding of this PROBLEM is:

MIC -> MUSIC PROGRAM
MUSIC PROGRAM -> SPEAKERS
WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER -> SPEAKERS

You could get your music program to record from "STEREO MIX" or "WHAT YOU HEAR". This will record everything you here in your soundcard.

You then have to make the microphone audable in the playback settings.

All of this can be done from the Volume Properties (or just type sndvol32 in START -> RUN).

Solve : Plz Help ! CPU or MOBO broke ??

Answer»

Thanks for reading ..Im at my wits end with this lot so ANY help/advice would be great.
Ok from the start ....

I had a system running a Athlon XP 2800, and one day I turned it on and nothing, FANS turned on for a split second and then turned off again! I tested every piece of equipent and was left with the thought process of the Mobo or CPU being broke..

So I got myself another Socket A Mobo (GIGABYTE 7VT600-RZ) plugged everything back in and the same thing happened again ..fans on for a split second and then off again, So after this I thought ok it must be the CPU then... So after much begging to the missus I got myself a new Athlon XP 3200+ from Ebay, the new CPU finally arrived (had a few probs with seller) plugged everything back in and would you beleive it still Nothing !! the same thing is still happening ...

Could I be so unlucky to get another Faulty CPU ? (the 3200+)

I have tried every single other item I can PSU, MEMORY, Graphics Card etc and ALL of them work fine in a old pentium comp I had around. Ive checked for compatabilty probs with the new motherboard and cant find any fault there.

The only time I can manage to get some power running through the new & old motherboard is when the CPU isnt inserted fans turn on & light up etc, but of course it wont boot up like that ... so that makes me think the Mobo is ok and Ive just been unlucky enough to buy a dud CPU becuase as soon as I put it back into the mobo ..nothing as usual happens.

any ideas ?

Thanks,
Dan.

Although it works fine in your old (less demanding) computer the PSU could still be the problem.
Quote

When the computer is powered on, the internal power supply initializes. The power supply doesn't immediately provide power to the REST of the computer. First, it determines whether it can supply the proper voltages that the computer's components REQUIRE. The power supply sends out a POWER GOOD signal when it determines that it can supply reliable power to the rest of the computer. When the CHIPSET receives this signal, it issues a SYSTEM RESET signal to the processor.
Have a read... http://www.zzine.org/node/411Your right it could be I suppose , Its a 550w made by 'ColoursIt' whoever they are ...

To be Honest though, Im already £150 down on the new Motherboard & CPU ...and I cant justify spending another £40 on a new PSU unless I can be more sure .... and although the 'less demanding sytem' is older ( 2Ghz P3 ) its not that old really

Is there anything else that could be causing these symptoms ? ..It it possible for a Faulty/Dead CPU to cause a totally dead system and somehow stop the power going through ?dancryer .....Quote

Solve : Re: speaker prob?

Answer»

It sounds like common feedback... Most mics have software settings you can adjust for reverb. Otherwise move your speakers away from the mic. Is this a headset or just a stand alone mic?OK. Did the headset come with any software? If not try this:

Q: While using my headset with boom microphone, why do I hear myself echo in my headset?

A: This normally occurs when the microphone is not muted in the playback volume controls. Use the following steps the resolve the problem.
Double click on the speaker icon in the System Tray to open the Volume Control.
Look for Microphone balance and volume slider. If you do not see it, click on the Options button, then click "Properties."
Ensure that "Playback" is selected in the "Adjust volume for" box.
SCROLL through the volume controls list and place a checkmark in the box for Microphone.
Click "OK."
Place a checkmark in the box below Microphone, if it is marked "Mute." If the Microphone is marked "Select," uncheck the box below Microphone.
Click "OK."
With a headset, you are supposed to be able to hear your own voice - It's called sidetone in telephone parlance and using a telephone (Or a headset) without it WOULD be a HORRIBLE experience.I think there's a difference between being able to hear yourself speak and an awefully loud and annoying echo... which is what I think is happening here.. :-/If it's a decent headset, the ammount of sidetone will be adjustable. Ok i have a new setup / new install and its giving me problems. Origionally nothing was installed aside from the video card, no sound card. I installed the mobo drivers, ran windows update ( legit copy of xp pro) installed ati's 6.3 drivers and it started crashing.

msi k8n neo4 platinum
amd 3700+ athlon 64
sapphire x1800xt
ocz 2gb ( 2 1gb )
antec sonata 2
wd 320gb sata2
sb audigy 2 zs

I have the dmp file but i dont know what to do with it. I turned off auto restart and it still restarts neway. It says the error is a HARDWARE failure but im not sure what to do. I did another complete FRESH install and there was no change.

It would origionally crash only when i had the video card drivers installed. i called ati and they figured it was a bad card so i RMA'ed the card and well nothing changed.

Im in tryng to run memtest86 but it WONT boot from the cd. I changed the bios to boot from the cd first, i have the right file on the cd i think. Boot from cd comes up then nothing happens???

Here is the error in the event log. Error CODE 0000009c, parameter1 00000004, parameter 2 80545ff0, parameter 3 f2000010, parameter 400010c0f

I have different ram that i can try. I dont think its the powersource my old one might work ( antec true power 430w ) ?

sorry for the long post but im frustrated and confused at the same time.Well .. it sounds like you chose some good parts to put in it... So let's start from the beginning.. You put all the peices together, installed your OS, (so far so good?) then ran windows update... Do you remember what you chose to install there? Did you reboot after the updates prior to installing your video card drivers? But you say it started crashing after the video drivers... What happened? Was it just the BSOD? Or did it go into a reboot cycle? Since it's all still new.. have you tried starting over? So far it sounds like bad drivers or software.I installed the os, updated the bios /mobo/northbridge. Ran windows update, installed pretty much everything vital( sp2 and .net and usual bs) I then installed the vid card drivers and it started freaking out. I reinstalled windows for a SECOND time no change. I rma'ed the card and no change. Ive tried diff drivers no change. I got BSOD and a reboot cycle. It happend totally randomly, sometimes it would be running for 15 and then crash or 2 minutes and then crash.

Ive made some headway. My time is off now. I know i set it when windows came up. Im on my second x1800xt so i dont think thats it. If i hit sw1 and clear cmos the computer wont crash until i install something else ( happend when i installed the sound card ( know good and working from my old computer) i hit sw1 and now it hasnt crashed in a day. Try running memtest from a floppy, if it shows up bad ram it may also be the mobo.
(Hint... MSI are in my little book of people to kill before I die)ran memtest standard test thru one time and i had no errors.

im gonna go over to the msi site and see what i can find.
