Solve : Does this make my computer slower??

Answer»

I have 1 cd-rom drive and 3 hard disks... My primary IDE consists of 1 hard disk (MASTER) and 1 cd-rom (slave) and secondary IDE has 2 hard disks.

Does making the cd-rom drive SLAVE in my primary IDE makes my computer slower? because i had noticed that before when i have only 2 hard disks and i've PUT it in secondary IDE leaving my primary IDE only cd-rom, it is much fasten than now.

Please advise.I would run the hard drives on the primary CHANNEL, and the optical drives on the secondary. Some THEORIZE that it is faster to have one of each on each channel, but I have never observed that and never do it on my machines.Yes, i've read some forums that it is not advisable to have hard disk and cd-rom in 1 IDE Channel but i don't have any choice coz i really need the 3 hard disks. Is there any possible ways to combine all 3 hard disks in 1 Channel?I believe the answer to that question is no. But, you could by a PCI IDE controller card; gives you additional IDE channels. How about using raid? is using raid cost a lot?Raid will not solve that problem.

Solve : Router problem?

Answer»

My computer is not detectting my router DG834 by going IE
This what they told me what to do:
connect the cable
Check the lights
Connecting through the IE by typing http://192.168.0.1
NOTHING
It use to work before but not now
I think i post this before but i forgot to reply
Any solution :-?

Make sure all plugs are plugged in. Unplug everything for about 10 seconds, then plug it all back in. This restarts the router and may find your connection.yeah i try that alot of times
Is there any way i can detect the router by using someting?
Does any members here ever had this problem?
Why is my computer is not detecting my router through IE?
Any Solution?
Are you plugged into the correct ports? You need to access it through a wire, nor wirelessly also. There is only one AVAILABLE port and that is WANminiport (i think is called that)
This router use ethernet connection and it must be connected throu IE

Anyway There should not be a problem at all said the manufactureQuote

Correct IP for most routers (unless you changed it in the router configuration).
http://192.168.1.1
What is make and model number of router?

Quote
Netgear DG834
ADSL Firewall Router

Netgear DG834
Yeah is that router RIGHT but is not solving my problem
First test - try pinging the router. Bring up a command prompt and type "ping 192.168.0.1" (if indeed that is the correct IP address for the router). If you get a response then the problem is with your firewall, probably, not your router. Try turning off your firewall (unplug the ADSL cable first) and then connecting.

Can you do a hard reset of the router? (To restore it to factory defaults.) This should overcome the problem where you have changed the router's internal IP address. You can then FOLLOW the original installation procedure in your manual.

If that doesn't work either, post again. There must be something wrong with your windows networking setup.I will try the pinging
And my router can not be reset unless going in to the browserHey T-Chai, Netgear has a user forum. Have you ever used it? It's at http://forum1.netgear.com/support/

Solve : HP scanner will not work after upgrade to win XP?

Answer»

We've upgraded to windows xp but our SCANNER will not work. Tried downloading new DRIVERS, no go. Our device manager has no imaging devices tab. We're kind of lost and the scanner worked fine before. HP won't help because the scanner is a few years old. Thinking we need a patch or something simple we are missing. THANKS for any help, TDoes xp detect the new hardware?
If so, TELL us what happens.
If not, try using the 'Add Remove Hardware' wizard in the Control Panel.hi, no XP does not detect the scanner anymore. And when I try the Add/Remove Hardware I'm having no luck there either. Even with the installation disc for the scanner I can't get it to recognize the hardware. I've uninstalled everything, unplugged, REBOOTED and started over but still nothing. Thanks so much for replying(= I'm at my wits end here(=Is your name is T or is that your nick name
if it was........fairplay my nick name is TI don't know how old the scanner is, but some that were designed for Win 98 just do not have drivers that work with XP. I would check wih HP to see if it compatible. When you use the add hardware wizard, do you choose 'add a new device', then choose 'select hardware from the list'?Fed: We were able to find the right patch a couple of years ago and the scanner worked fine with the XP scanning and imaging software. But we uninstalled and have been unable to reinsall it correctly or find what worked for us last time.

GX1_Man: I tried add new hardware, select from list but the only items on the list were digital cameras. There are no options for scanners.

Thanks to all for the help and suggestions, I really appreciate it, hopefully we'll get there(= TIn the hardware wizard you will find it under imaging devices but you do need to read the screens and make your selections carefully to get there.
When you see & click on other devices you are nearly there, I'd give you step by step screenshots but it is not that difficult to find.Just a thought: is this installation of WinXP fully up to date with all the latest patches from MS (including SP2)?

Solve : processor TOO HOT!!!?

Answer»

I just put in my heatsink and RAM for the computer im building and started it up and it went into BIOS for about 20 seconds then shut off.....after going into PC health to monitor the computer specs i noticed that my Athlon 64 would start out at the norm but very quickly burn up to the shut down point of 100 degrees celcius or there abouts. my heatsink is installed and the fan on it works so why would it do this??Heat sink not on correctly (backward?) or no thermal paste. If you are using thermal paste and the heat sink is APPLIED, you may have too much.

Please recheck and advise.alright i took off the heat sink and all that came with the heat sink was the retension rack (which i had ONE on the mobo already) and this doublestick tape crap that goes to a bottom plate underneath the heatsink that dosnt fit my processor, its for the AMD Opteron. So what i did was i cut out about 1 inch X 1 inch of the tape and stuck it on there and obviously that wasnt worth a *censored*, however it is "High conductivity Shin-Etsu thermal tape material" so maybe i put too much?? by the way thanks alot for the help....you guys are great!Quote

Does it always show the same speed ratings? Do you see that regardless of whether the computer is running on battery or plugged in to a wall OUTLET? I don't own a laptop but I KNOW some laptops will throttle down at certain times to conserve battery power.

Solve : My Kids Computer wont shut down?

Answer»

You have a defect linda lange I think you can't FIGURE out what's wrong with it so your playing the blame GAME. I was just trying to cover all the BASES so it be easier to pinpoint the problem. But it's clear you don't know. I will look for help elsewhere thankyou."... the blame game". No. I'm saying we can't move forward with this until you are willing to accept that the problem is your computer, not the monitor. If you're trying to "cover all the bases", well, I haven't seen that so far. You've been stuck on one base, the monitor.

I don't know whether I can fix the problem. The forum is about people helping people. If I can't come up with the SOLUTION, then maybe SOMEONE else can. But, an open mind and some clear thinking and communicating are needed, whether here or in any other forum, in order for progress to occur.

"But it's clear you don't know." Wrong. You don't know what I know because you haven't allowed the discussion to continue beyond the notion that you have a monitor problem.

Solve : Computer can not boot because of BIOS Virus?

Answer»

My computer got BIOS virus and my computer just cannot be booted up. Here is the story of my computer:

I have a debranded HP Pavilion A450n computer. My computer is running window 2000. I didn’t install Antivirus software. My computer always was frozen and I just shut down and reboot. It seems OK. One day, I turned on the power and I just see the black screen. My CPU fan is running.

I swap Video card, Memory Chip with good one. My computer power is on but just black screen. I reset jumper to clear CMOS. I even swap the battery in the motherboard. It didn't work.

I swap my hard disk with my friend hard disk. Because my 4 years old son put a floppy disk in the floppy drive, when I power on the computer, I suddenly see the blue screen, it ask me which drive you want boot from: floppy, hard disk, or CD ROM, I select DEFAULT. I was so excited and just swap back gain my old Hard disk. When I power on, just see the black screen again. My friend swap back his hard disk, his clone computer immediately told him he got virus and his boot record is corrupted. My friend reformat his computer and reinstall. It seems OK. I just REALIZE I got very BAD virus which stay in my motherboard. Then I do virus check about my hard disk in another computer through USB external hard disk connection. My hard disk boot record is corrupted. So I image install window operating system and it is OK to boot up. I swap back my CLEAN hard disk. The computer is powered on and I just see the black screen.

I just feel this virus can remember hard disk whenever the disk is corrupted. So I borrow a used hard disk from my company. This time, I insert window 98 bootable disk and window 98 bootable CD ROM. I swap the hard disk. I turn on the power. I still see the black screen. I open and close CD-ROM several times. Suddenly I see the blue screen which ask me which drive I want to boot from. I select from CD-ROM. I tried to install window 98. The set up disk told me there is OS/2 operating system installed. I boot again from floppy. From floppy disk, I run some DOS program try to clean bootable virus. I also download updated BIOS version and tried to run from DOS, but that BIOS updated program is window-based program. I cannot update from DOS. I can decide to install window 98 anyway. After FILLED registration key, I got fatal error message and I didn’t finish the installation. I reboot the computer again, I do fix installation. But I only see the dos prompt in the CD-Rom drive. I try to reboot my computer again. I power on the computer and I only see the black screen. I cannot boot the computer anymore. I did virus check the hard disk I borrowed from my computer didn’t have virus.

I totally lost. I don’t know how to get rid of this virus. This virus stay in flash memory of my motherboard and it can remember infected hard disk.

Please help me figure out the problems. Thanks a lot anyway.
There's no such thing as a BIOS/motherboard virus. You have faulty hardware. You may also have a virus.I don't think it is the hardware problem. If the hardware problem, how come sometimes it can boot and infect other hard disk?

Solve : Packard Bell Monitor Problem?

Answer»

I have a Packard Bell Monitor
MODEL No A520
S/N TGMN93610649
MPCS 6764430000

I WONDER if any ONE KNOWS where I can get a manual for it as I seem to have a problem with it.
When I power up a computer the monitor when switching it on it starts off with a Green Power LED then changes to a Orange LED and will not continue the start up. The computer meanwhile is loading as usual. [smiley=sad.gif]

I have restarted the monitor over and over again then I shut it down and shut down the computer. A bit later I start the monitor again, power up the pc and you guessed it it LOADS up and it works. [smiley=shocked.gif] Then if I shutdown the pc but not the monitor and then a LITTLE later I power the pc up again, the monitor that went to a Grean LED goes to the Orange LED and I have to start all over again.

Any ideas on why this happens and how it can be put right will be gratefully received. [smiley=dankk2.gif]

TIA

ElaineI suggest going to the manufacturer's website.

Solve : ECC Memory??

Answer» HI i am looking to buy some extra memory for my motherboard.

Now my question is about having ECC memory and non-parity memory, im a little confused.

I was looking through Ebay and i found a shop seller SELLING some ECC memory, but they said in their description:

"PLEASE ENSURE COMPATABILITY BEFORE BIDDING.Too many buyers are RECEIVING an item of memory only to discover it is not compatable with the memory already in their PC.You CANNOT MIX registered/ECC memory with none reg/ECC memory. Please ensure you know what it is you're buying as I will NOT refund/replace any more due to incomapability or buyer error."

Ok that is fair enough. So i went to the Crucial website and downloaded their CHECKER tool to see what type of memory i have http://www.crucial.com/uk/systemscanner/viewscanbyid.asp?id=77A19E5331D926C3&tabid=AM . I seem to have currently 2 non-parity sticks of memory out of 3 slots in my computer. So based on the comment the ebayer made i cannot have ECC and non-parity memory?

But Crucial then says that my computer can have ECC and non-parity memorys, and acctually recommends me to buy some non-parity + ECC sticks.

So as you can see im not sure what to do. Can i have non-parity and ECC memory in the same computer working because Crucial seems to think so....but the ebayer doesn't??
thanks for reading!I would NOT mix ECC and non-ECC for a lot of reasons.so what memory would be best for my machine??Non ECC should be fine for all machines except servers.

Solve : power supply dimensions?

Answer»

:-? my power supply is DYING and causing my pc to just die unexpectedly. it's powering a pentium 4 atx in a sony case with additional connects to two optical drives, one floppy and the hard drives. all of this seems standard, but the power supplies i can find to REPLACE this one are all too deep. i only have 6 inches max of space between the back of my case and the rear end of my optical drives and the replacements are all 6 inches deep!
help please, the brand in the case is an NMB but i can't even find this manufacturer nor can i find a supply with an external 12v for my speakers.
any suggestions?Make and model of your computer?sony vaio pcv-rz24gWell, here's an online vendor who sells a power supply for the Sony: Sony PC / Server Power Supply (146870923) Rather expensive, but you may not have much choice, due to Sony's proprietary components.thanks i'll check it out

that is rather expensive. they don't list the specs for it either

i was hoping to upgrade for more power, but if i don't find anything else by the end of the week, i'll probably go with it.

thanks againWow, that IS expen$ive! my fear on getting that one is that it will be the same one fan, 300 watt that i have now

my power supply is dying and causing my pc to just die unexpectedly
I have to question this.
Are you sure?
How do you know? The advantage of a GX1 is that a new PSU from Dell is $30. You can get a whole used Optiplex for that price on eBay. (I guess that's why I have 5! )

At that price I would buy a $10 tester to check the old one first too.

i pretty sure its the power supply.

first signs were over a year ago with loud fan noises during normal operation followed by hardware warnings on my fan speed during boot. now the fan in the supply doesn't even run.

lately, the pc's just been shutting down--complete power down--on its own and it won't restart without unpluging the power supply for about 30 seconds first. sometimes the pc will stay on all day, other times it will die before it even finishes booting; there's no telling.

i haven't put a tester on it, no. but i can't find any evidence of malware or MOBO failure using what diagnositic software i've gotten (SYSTEM diag progs, spybot, spyware doctor, mcafee, adaware, etc.). not sure what else it could be.Quote
now the fan in the supply doesn't even run.

Sounds diagnostic to me.

Solve : Two Cards, Two Monitors?

Answer»

I have two video cards, one's an nVidia 5700 and the other an ATI Radeon. I have two monitors, one plugged into each card. Both video cards are seated, updated, and are working properly. The monitor on my nVidia (my primary card) works fine, but on my Radeon (my secondary card) the monitor isn't detected.

If anyone has any suggestions I'd appreciate it.
ThanksGo to Control Panel, Display, and select the Settings tab. You should see two rectangles representing the two monitors. Do you see them? Click the one marked 2 and then check the BOX for "Extend my Windows DESKTOP onto this monitor." Click Apply and OK.

Note that you can change the position of the monitors in that screen so that it agrees with the actual physical positions of your monitors.http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/moviemaker/expert/dunn_03august11_monitors.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/northrup_multimon.mspx
These might come help full when you got your monitors fixSoybean, the problem is that the second monitor isn't there under the settings tab. What did you mean in your original POST when you said both monitors are working correctly? Were you talking about Device Manager? Is the nVidia card AGP, and the ATI PCI? Prior to the two-card configuration, were you using the nVidia card alone? Does your MOTHERBOARD also have onboard video?

How many PCI slots do you have? Which one is the ATI card in? Make and model of your computer?Ok sorry. I meant both of my video cards are seated and are fuctioning properly, according to Device Manager. Both monitors I know work, but only one monitor is being detected when I have both of them plugged into my computer (the one through the nVidia card). Yes the vidia is AGP, and the ATI PCI. Yes, prior to the two-card config. I was using just the nVidia card.

There are (going of photograph memory) 5-6 PCI slots on my motherboard, the ATI is in the slot just below my nVidia. The computer was built from scratch, I do not know the make and model.I asked what PCI slot because it can make a difference. I recently installed a second video card in a Sony VAIO desktop. I initially installed the card in the second PCI slot below the AGP slot. Even though Device Manager showed the second display adapter, the display was not working right. I removed the card in put it in the top PCI slot. That worked.

Usually, the top PCI slot is the best choice and you already have the card in that slot. So, I don't know whether trying other PCI slots would be worth trying, but it might be. On my home machine, I have two cards installed, and my PCI card is not in the top slot.

Also, do you have any documentation on your motherboard? If so, check it for info on BIOS settings related to video.

Try running a diagnostic tool called dxdiag. Go to Start, Run, and type dxdiag in the Run box and click on OK. The DirectX Diagnostic Tool that appears should show a separate tab for each display. I'm curious whether yours will show both displays.

For another forum, one entirely devoted to multiple monitor configurations, visit http://www.realtimesoft.com/multimon/forum/topics.asp?forum=1&tmpl=.

I'll try things out and see if any work, thanks a lot.Well you were right, the second display didn't show up in the dxdiag. So I am probably going to try putting the card in a different PCI slot. Since the top slot (all together) is filled with my AGP, should I just try random spots or what?QUOTE

... Since the top slot (all together) is filled with my AGP ...
You've got me a little puzzled by that comment. You only have one AGP slot; it's a different color than the PCI slots, and it is not aligned with the PCI slots; it's offset from them. Here's a reference with some good info on APG and PCI video cards, and the link on the page for Figure 13.2 and Figure 13.3 show some good images of these slots.

Yes, I would try installing the card in other PCI slots. You might just go down the column, trying at least the top 3 slots. Do you have any other PCI cards (sound card, etc.) installed?

I'll be away from my computer for most of the day but will check back here when I return.
My sound card I know is an nVidia, that's all I could tell ya. Sorry to confuse. I understand now. I have many slots, but the metal sheet is stuck onto the case, and I only have two spots where I can remove it, and one of them has a messed up screw. But I'll see what I can do, and if I get it to work I'll let you know. Thanks a lot.

Solve : Added Dvd now other isnt there.?

Answer»

Ok this is gonna sound strange.

I CURRENT have a DVD rom (non write) drive and a CDR writer.

I just bought a DVD/CD writer and PLACED it in the slot for the plain DVD (non write) drive.

So now I have the new DVD/CD writer and my old CD writer installed.

The problem I'm having is my CP finds the new DVD/CD but it wont FIND my old CD writer. At the moment the only one working is the new DVD/CD.

Any ideas on what I should do to make my cp be able to find it?

The only other thing I was thinking is maybe I can only have one "burner" on my cp. If thats so then I should take out the old cd writer and just replace it with my regular DVD (non write) drive?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One must be jumpered as Master (MA) and the other as Slave (SL). The jumpers are on the back by the power cable.

Either no GOOD or not compatible with MOTHERBOARD. What make/model is the MB and the 133 RAM?The motherboard is an Asus A7V rev 1.02. The PC133 I'm not sure. It has 16X64 on it. Also CL2 and TCW. I don't know if any of those mean ANYTHING to you. I had it for a while, though, with no problems. At any rate, everything else seems to be running fine, at least for the moment.

Solve : Dell Laptops - Heat Issues?

Answer»

I have owned a Dell Inspiron 5100 for about 3 years and almost from the begining it has had heat issues. I am limited to probably less than an hour of battery time when I am moible with the thing. But at home, it sits on my desk with the back elevated a little with a small desk fan blowing on it.

If I don't do that... it clips out in less than an hour.

I have taken it apart, cleaned the fan, cleaned everything else and still there is this heat issue.

I guess the question I have is does anyone else with a Dell Laptop have these same issues and if so, what have you done about it? Other than carrying a fan around all of the time, it REALLY is a bit of a pain.

Max
ValleyChatter.comAre the fans working properly? Spinning as fast as they should? Is your heat sink doing ok?

FlameQuote

it clips out in less than an hour
What does this mean?My guess is that it turns off after an hour. Clips off = Craps out = Turns off/goes on error.

FlameSorry for the delay, but yeah, the fan in the laptop is working fine. The heatsinks and everything else are clean as a whistle.

I would say it has done this since about 6 months after I unboxed it. Witout a fan blowing across the computer, it clips (turns off) in under and hour.

I have thought about building a base with 5 or 6 micro fans I can carry with me that would operate off wall power. It really is a pain in the neck.

/meValleychatter.com........ If you have had this issue for almost 3 years ...... why on earth didnt you go back after Dell while it was still under warantee ?
If in fact the hi temp shutdown is causing the issue ....... ( and the temperature is really high as opposed to a defective monitoring chip ...... ) thats one thing however ........ It is possible that the issue is with .............either the .......
cpu cooling fan , the heat sink or the thermal paste used is (was) improperly applied. I would have a shot at Dell ....... if you get no satisfaction there ...... I would visit the Dell forums ........ http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums ....
You will require your machine model make and the tag # and possibly someone there may have a better solution .

dl65
I'm with you dl65. That's what warranty is all about, and Dell has been very good to me with their support, but I did report issues QUICKER than 3 years.I had this problem with my Dell Insp 8000.

I wish I still had the post that I got this info from, but maybe I can at least give you something to start looking at.
The first thing that was TOLD me was my BIOS needed to be updated. I did that but it didnt help anything.

I downloaded a program call "dell inspiron 8000/8100/8200 fan control v2.20- (c) 2004 by C. Diefer".
What this does is RUN in your bottom right corner of XP and checks your cpu temp/gpu temp/ cpu load/ cpu speed and turns the fans on and off. When I use this I set it to when I wanted the fans to run and at what speed (fast/SLOW).

For example,
My 1st and 2nd fan turns on when my cp hits 40c and they turn off at 38c
If my cp goes over that then setting 2
My 1st and 2nd fan runs fast at 45c and turns off at 40c.

This means that if my cp gets over 41c both fans runs fast, but when it reaches 40c then my first setting takes over and runs my fans at slow speed until it gets down to 38c which the fans turns off.

I would start looking at a program like this for your specific model tho, but this was the only way I could get mine to stop cutting off after a few mins of running and it would take a good bit of time for it to cool off.

Youll love it when you find it.

Hope that helps.

Solve : Where's my video card gone??

Answer»

I recently installed Windows XP Professional over the TOP of an existing edition of XP Home. However, since the installation completed, I've been getting an error message relating to the video card, which is an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 (installed in an Advent 7039 laptop).

When the PC boots up I get the following error message:

Warning: The ATI Control Panel failed to initialize because no ATI driver is installed, or ATI driver is not working properly. The ATI Control Panel will now exit.

I've been to the ATI site (www.ati.com) and have downloaded the latest ATI disply driver, but when I attempted to install it I got another error message (as follows).

Severe: Setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup.

I'm able to read the laptop screen so some sort of display driver must be running, although the PC now seems to run very slowly (and videos don't run smoothly anymore), so it's unlikely that the ATI graphics card is working. In fact I can no longer see the card listed in the PC's hardware profile.

Any ideas what I can do to sort this out? I've TRIED to "search for new hardware" but that doesn't FIND the card. I'm a real novice at this sort of stuff so don't know where to start.I ran into this just yestderday with a Gateway system. First thing to do is delete ALL drivers if listed and uninstall the software. Reboot the machine and when it loads and asks you if you want to install PCI video adapter or anything else, say cancel.

WHen the machine is up and running with a poor 16 color display go into add new hardware and don't let it search. pick Display adapter and then choose the first option GIVEN in left side of the the box you get. and install that, choosing PCI VGA adapter on the right portion of that box.

Reboot the machine and install the appropriate ATI driver.

Let us know how it goes.

Solve : Do I need a 24 pin PS on a new Asus A8N-SLI MB??

Answer»

The new ASUS A8N-SLI Premium MB has a 24 pin connector on the MB. Will my 20 pin ATX12 PS work?
Thanks for any input. I don't want to blow up the board on first power up.Get what it's made for - 24 pin. I doubt that old PSU has enough horsepower anyway. My PS is a year old Antec True Blue 480W. I've used it on other 24 pin MB's with np. Just curious if anyone knows about compatibility with the ASUS A8N-SLI Premium.
ThanksDid you try it on this one yet?I got 2 DOA MBs from NewEgg. Fans would just spin up but wouldn't POST even with nothing but the CPU (AMD 4000+ SanDiego), a 512 stick of Corsair ram and a 7800GTX vid card installed. No beeps, no video. ASUS told me the boards were NG and to return for replacement.

I'm wondering about the reality of that percentage of bad product from a reputable manufacturer and sounding out you pros about what else may be causing the problem.

Have to ask if the empty 4 pins in the power molex could have anything to do with it.

By the way, I tried a 24 pin PS on that board as well with the same symptoms. (after the fact)
Thanks for the replyQuote

I am ASSUMING you had a heatsink/fan attached? But of course. I don't think these boards will POST without seeing a current draw on the CPU-FAN plug. Well, that was the point. You said it didn't post! So, GX1-Man, I guess you don't know about the power plug and would rather play verbal tennis than address the initial question?

Quote

To be honest you were not clear in your post. That's why it took a while to get to the issue. I am not into verbal tennis.

I haven't used that specific board so I can't give you a definite. Perhaps ASUS could? Be sure pin 1 on the 20 pin power connector aligns to pin 1 on the motherboard 24 pin power connector. Same applies to the ATX12V AUX connector, as long as its pin 1 on the four pin connector aligns with pin 1 on the six pin connector on the motherboard, they should work.

I am concerned about two "bad" boards in a row. Did you have that same PSU on them? What about something like this:

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=ATX20-24&cat=CBLChrisVe...... I just had a look at your mobo manual .....and in Chapter 2 page 26 ...... it would appear that that board requires a 24 pin EATX connector.......

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=A8N-SLI%20Premium

Before I sent the boards back , I would be trying a new psu with a EATX 24 pin connector ......

dl65 Thank you for posting back guys.

When the inital board wouldn't POST, I did in fact run to the local computer store and buy a 24 pin PS figuring that was the problem but when hooked up made no difference at all so I returned it.

I downloaded the manual before I bought the board to COMPARE it with others. It does say to use a 24 pin PS but doesn't say you can't use a 20Pin.

Last month I built a box with an ABit board featuring a 24 pin plug and in the manual it says you can use a 20 pin PS and I did, but (as GX1-Man says) made sure the molex is shifted to the proper end.

It seems that the general concensus and recommendation is that if you load it up with drives and expansion boards, you should split the load between the power rails by feeding the 4 extra pins.

Yesterday I made a CompUSA run for one of those 20 to 24 pin adapters. For 6 bucks, I can't go wrong. Now I just have to wait for the new MB.

I've got some experience building and upgrading desktop computers. My first was an IBM 8086 with 256K of RAM on-board, dual 5 1/4" floppy drives and a 20meg HD running DOS v1.02. The obsession has only gotten worse!!
This has me scratching my head. Like you, I can't imagine the probability of a major player having this kind of failure rate.

Thanks for the input.

I have a good heatsync and it is clean.
My CASE is also open most of the time

is hot but the bios says it runs at around 70C.

Could it just be my sensor on mobo.
i dont know. please help me.benphelps..... Don't you have a coolingfan on the heatsink ?

dl65 benphelps,
70c is not too hot to touch but HOTTER than the CPU should be. If you don't have a cooler on it, you should get one.
You also need to have cross ventilation in the case. Leaving the case open will not enhance COOLING, it will cause the internals to run hotter because the air is not exchanged.I do have a cpu fan and it runs at around 4500RPM and pushes a lot of air through the heat sync and the fan on my graphics card KEEPS it cool i have a fan blowing on both of my HDD's and two fans in my PSU and a fan blowing on my Wireless card BECAUS it gets a little hot so i dont know why my CPU gets so hot.http://www.gen-x-pc.com/cputemps.htm

Solve : more hard drive help?

Answer»

I recently got a Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 8, which is an ATA/133 drive. My current computer only handles up to ATA/100. When I installed the drive, the drive was identified correctly by the BIOS but never appeared in windows. Could this problem be a BIOS issue, Windows issue, or drive issue?

I haven't tried running the maxtor utitity YET, but will see if it will work when I get home later. You have to partition the drive before it can be used in Windows. Go to Disk Management for the setup utility, etc.

ATA 100 vs 133 is not an issue here. Thanks, I totally brain farted about formating the drive!

Since i've upgraded the MB and now have some issues with the original drive I was using, I'll try setting the maxtor as primary and then format and install my OS on it then.

Thanks again! Thanks for posting back and I'm glad you are up and running ahh!! a premature congratulatons!

I put the drive as master (jumpers set correctly) and the END of the cable, WENT booted up to format and install W2k. The drive was recognized during HDD, but after that, i got a hard drive failure notice. Swapped out drives, and it worked fine. So this must be a bad drive?!

FWIW: Aopen MX3W pro MB, 2x128MB RAM, W2K OS, 80wire IDE cable on IDE1, ATA/33 cable on IDE2.You can download free diagnostics from the manufacturer's web site to find out if the drive has failed.

Thanks for that! Ran it this am, and the drive is dead as dead can be! Luckily, the was a no DOA guarentee with it, and the seller has already SAID he'd take it back.

And here I THOUGHT it was just me! Glad we solved the mystery and you are not out the cost of a drive. Take care.

Solve : CD-ROM drive tray will not stay shut?

Answer»

I've got a Hewlett Packard Pavilion 7285 200mhz PC in our basement, with Windows 95 and MS-DOS. It's got a Sound Blaster PCI sound card, and I don't know what video card it has (probably just a generic one, as it has no 3D accelerator). The computer has not been connected to the internet in years, and was bought in 1997. The only way it can connect to the internet is through dialup. I'm trying to troubleshoot the CD-ROM drive, since that's the main problem with the PC. It's a 8X speed drive, and it's got a problem with the tray. When I boot up the PC, the tray opens automatically and stays open. Almost every time I close the tray, either by pressing the button or pushing the tray in, the light comes on and the tray opens again without closing. The drive even does this when I insert a CD, and sometimes even when it's in the middle of reading the disc too. What I think I have is a hardware problem. Can anybody help me here? I'd like to get that drive to behave.I had this problem before
It was the virus that causing this problem to my computer
Try some virus scan and spyware scanI would just replace the drive. It is elderly. Well, I don't know what options I have. I'll have to find out the make and model number of the drive. I can't replace it with just any drive with a similar speed. The computer's cover has a different shape than most PCs might have. The drawer of the CD-ROM drive has tendencies to stick out a little past the drive's bay, and goes into a slot in the front cover that is perfectly shaped to hold the tray and the button that opens it. Could there be a jumper problem? For three years, the drive had been functioning properly, but after Windows had to be re-installed, it started malfunctioning.

No, Elixir, it can't be a virus or malware, at least I don't think. But the computer has problems locking up when I exit out of MS-DOS programs to Windows, and that needs fixing bad. The system boots up and shuts down at a fast speed though. I don't have a lot of programs installed on it, either.

GX1_Man, I'm going to need to connect that old PC to the internet via dialup and get a registry cleaner. Which one would be recommended? Of course, I'll need to find AOL 4.0 or 5.0 before attempting that. That'll require me to use the CD-ROM drive, unfortunately. Sometimes it behaves, so I might get a chance to deal with it. Not today though, as I've got a lot of homework (I'm in college).Quote

The only jumper problem would be if a jjumper fell off (unlikely) as you describe the machine as sitting and not being worked on in any way.

Spybot, AdAware, AVG Free Antivirus and CCleaner (google for them) are all you should need.

I would be interested in seeing a picture of the machine and the CD. It sounds interesting. If you have any way to POST them, please do so. By the way theat is a Goldstar 8x CDROM. That was quite a machine in it's day. It listeed at $2399.00 and had a Pentium 200 and 32 meg of RAM.

http://www.winmag.com/library/1997/0101/winla118.htm

I wouldn't spend too much trying to fix it up, but it should still run Win95 quite nicely. Do you still have the original CD's?Yep, I still have the CDs. Thanks for the help in identifying the maker of the CD-ROM drive. This will enable me to narrow my search on eBay if I want to look for it. In fact, I'm going to do a search right now. Please keep us posted! Speaking of eBay.... This afternoon I went on eBay and searched "Goldstar 8X", and found such a drive. I asked the seller if it would be useable in an HP Pavilion 7285 PC, and he told me that it's compatible, so I went onto the auction page and purchased the item and instantly PAID for it through Paypal. The price of the drive was $0.99, since he said it was untested. He pulled it out of a server. Would it be possible to remove the front panel of the drive if I need to? I might need to do that to get it to fit in the HP Pavilion. I'm gonig to check both that CDROM drive and the old one to make sure the model numbers match.Sorry about the double post (I will endeavor to not do so again). Remember when you asked me to PROVIDE a picture of the PC? Here it is (1600 x 1200):

http://members.aol.com/rdm6190/HP_Pavilion_7285.jpg

GX1_Man, do you think that the CDROM drive I purchased on eBay will fit in this system? Would there be anything I'd need to do to get it to?
After looking at the picture, i suspect that when the front of the case is removed that either:

1) It will fit just fine and the case just obscures the front of the drive. It's really just a normal drive.

or

2) at the worst case the front panel of the CDROM drive could be removed

Some desktops use the small laptop style CDROMS, but these are the ultra small profile ones. I predict no problems with this repair.
DarthMaul maby is not the virus for your computer that is causing the problem but i tell what actually happen to my computer.

No firewall turn on for 2 years running
No virus software
And that about it but i havent encounter a problem with virus and anythings els yet.
But last year december one of my friend send this thing which is a virus, he send it through an AOL email.
I know him quite a long time now so i trust it in openning the email. 2 minute later the CD starts poping out an fake error start displaying,

code: 0010011011011011010100101_____ect
System is broken please shutdown imedately or contact the manufacture

I was sh**ing my self till he PHONE me and said that it was only a joke virus ha ha ha ah

What a pr***

So i thought you might of have the same thingNope. I don't have that problem, Elixir, and never will. I don't get any error messages when my CD tray pops open. It's obviously a hardware problem. That is, the CD-ROM drive has got a short. I'm sure there's other things that can cause a CD-ROM drive to pop open as you described. A virus would be the most common case, but the worst case is always a short in the drive itself.

Solve : the horrible pink bars! - pls help!?

Answer»

okay, first off im not sure where to put this so ILL put it here...

yesterday i was playing a game, fine fine fun and all, i shut the COMPUTER blah blah, then this morning, when i turned on the computer there were pink bars across the screen, they just stay like that, these vertical dashes across the screen, heres a pic:

how do i fix this? how does it happen?

pls help!

Either a bad video card or video drivers need updating. Does this happen when the machine is booting or just within Windows? If all the TIME, it would be the card. If unsure because you cannot see colors at startup assume it is both.

I would start with REMOVING and reseating the video card. Then download the appropriate drivers for it and install.

What computer make/model and video card is in there?ok, thx for the quick reply

the video card is ATI Radeon 9800 XT

but the weird thing is, that earlier, for a moment it started working fine, i didnt do anything but it just went back to normal for about 10 mins before the pink bars came back.

the rest of the specs are here if you think they are needed:

Intel Pentium 4
3 GHz
1 GB Ram
windows xp service pack 2

if you need any other info then just ask and ill dig it outRemove and reinstall it (while powere off). If there is a fan, make sure it is spinning when it is POWERED on. Check your temps with Everest:

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.htmlkk thx, its sorta fixed now actually, the pink bars just went away after i switched off the comp for a while, but i'll do what you said with the vid card later anyways just incase

thx!It sounds like heat build up to me. It gets better when you turn the machine off for a while. It gets worse when playing a game, which is graphics intensive.

When did this start? How old is the card? Be sure and check the fan and temps! Do not listen to PINK Floyd!

Solve : To save streamed Realvideo?

Answer»

Does ANYONE know how to save a streamed Realvideo? I use Win XP and IE 6. Then I would like to burn these Realvideo to DVD (have to buy a external burner yet). Have no DVD bunring experience. Appreciate any input. Any free shareware that can do the job? I see $50 softwares that claim to do the job.Look what I found on google in < 5 secconds:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=save+streamed+video

<---------------They say Flashget saves RPM EXTENSIONS...You may try. I have Flashget but have not tried streams.I am using a TOSHIBA laptop A100, 256M RAM, 1.5 CeleronM, 60G hard DRIVE, Win XP SP2. Following Googled results I tried the freeware R7C Real7ime Converter. It was not friendly to use and did not complete. LOOKS like the next alternative is to buy the $30 WM Recorder. I really like to save these Realvideo streams and be able to burn them on DVD later. Plan to buy an external DVD burner. Is the Hi-Val 8X ($90 at CompUSA) able to dot he job? Does It need a separate software to convert the VM and RMVB files before burning to DVD?

Solve : Monitor for Internet TV?

Hi all,

I'm considering to install a tv card into my computer, but I'm uncertain of the monitor requirements. I just found a LG Flatron L1950G on sale and had to make a fast decision to grab it. But I might return it if someone can convince me that it's not right for tv. I'm only able to spend about 350-375 dollars.

Also, is the size appropriate? Or should I actually have a WIDE screen model?

You dont need a specific monitor for your kind for your TV card you gona buyThanks for the comments Elixir

I've been shopping all WEEKEND and found the wide-sreen ViewSonic VA1912W linked below. It's got a fast refresh rate, but the viewing angles aren't so great. It was displayed at the store and the limitations were noticeable. I also noticed that the image-width was distorted. It was easy to see because the monitor was running next to a regular sized one. Not sure if I'd want that effect.

http://www.hk.viewsonic.com/en/products/productspecs.php?id=223

Linked below is a regular-sized ViewSonic VA902 that is comparable to the one I BOUGHT. It actually looks better according to the product details, but the stock price is about 60 bucks lower. So does anyone think there are factors to consider that aren't represented in the specs, such as pixel quality for example?

I mean, why else would the price be so much lower for a product with better specs?

http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_techspecs_full.php/masterid=10347625

Also, regarding watching TV on the monitor, will a regular-sized monitor cause there to be black borders at top and bottom of the screen? It depend on watch you are try to watch some video media have black boarder but if you going to watch DVD there will definately will be a boarder on there.
Most video media that you are going to get from internet will not look as quality as the TV because the common highest video pixel is 640-480 as you monitor will be something like 1024-768 or higher.
But pheww the ViewSonic VA1912W looks good

Solve : CMOS and Device problems?

Answer»

I've moved some hard drives around and installed a cd-rw device in my Dell SC500 server machine. I always tried being careful to uninstall the devices with Win2K Server's Device Manager, but somehow it got screwed-up anyway.

Here's what it should look like:
PRIMARY 0 -- 80 GB HD operating system
Primary 1 -- 20 GB HD data
Secondary 0 -- 20 GB HD data
Secondary 1 -- CD-RW

Here's what happens at boot:
Secondary hard disk drive 1 not found
Secondary hard disk drive 0 failure

Enter CMOS and it looks like this (auto detect is selected for all):
Primary Drive 0 -- Hard Drive (all settings look right to me)
Primary Drive 1 -- Hard Drive (all settings look right to me)
Secondary Drive 0 -- Hard Drive (all settings look right to me)
Secondary Drive 1 -- Unknown Device (this should be the CD-RW)

In Windows 2000 Server's Device manager, these are SHOWN:
80 GB HD operating system (corresponds to Primary 0)
20 GB HD data (corresponds to Primary 1)
20 GB HD data (corresponds to Secondary 0)
No CD-RW is shown (would correspond to Secondary 1)

In Windows 2000 Server's Computer Management:
Disk 0 80 GB HD online (everything ok)
Disk 1 20 GB HD online (one volume is there, another is missing)
Disk 2 Foreign (no volumes shown)
Next row 20 GB HD (one volume failed)

As you can see, the PROFILE in Computer Management is just a mess. I had some mirroring between the two 20 GB drives, so that's causing problems too I suppose.

The info above is after having cleared the CMOS by removing the battery. I thought I could've started from scratch by doing that. But as you can see, there are failure messages at start and CMOS doesn't find the CD-RW. And in Windows 2000... What a mess!

I don't think my devices or cables are defective. I've checked all of that.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how to get this back to 'normal' again?

I'd REALLY appreciate some help with this.

P.

Solve : Internet for two computers?

Answer»

Hi

Does anyone know the cheapest way to have two computers connected to the internet. I have DSL Broadband. I dont want to use a cross over cable as i have MSN on both computers and it wont work. Is my next cheapest option a Router.

Thanks.A wireless router and then either cable them both to the router, or get a PCI adapter for one of them (assuming they are both desktops) so they can both be on at the same time, one wirelessly. It's really simple to do. Think D-Link, Netgear or Linksys.Check the SUnday PAPER for prices near you. Router will be fine if you dont wana use a crossover cable

Erm no unless this is comedians tonight what do you mean. I already said no instructions and crap support. But Thanks.Modem plugs into wall. Cat5E cable goes from moodem to routers WLAN port. Other computers connect to the 4 (probably) ports on the router (or wirelessly) to share the connection. Lots of tutorials on the net.Yes sorry guys so MUCH easier to look it up. rather then seek an answer. If it's wireless read up on security and WEP. Or you'll be sharing you Internet connection with your neighbours.

Solve : I really need help.?

Answer»

I just pretty much built a custom computer, and all was going well until it wouldn't let me install windows (on formating step it never got passed 0% complete) and I tried 3 different hard drives. But that is not my current problem anymore. Right now, it won't even show anything on my monitor. My monitor works fine as I have tested it on my laptop. Also, when I plug the monitor to my computer it SAYS it has a signal on the monitor. But when I turn on the computer it turns on, fans run, makes all those normal sounds, lights on, etc.. but nothing shows up on the screen. Not even the BIOS or pre-boot up steps. Just a black screen of doom.Unplug all add-on cards except for the graphics card. Remove all but one memory card. Unplug all dirves except your main hard drive. Then try starting up. (This problem could be caused by numerous faults, so reduce the system to its bare minimum. If it works like that, add the extras in gradually until you see the fault again.)

Are you getting any beeps when you start up the system? Have you tried resetting the CMOS?Quote

I have tried that theory already and no results. And yes I have tried resetting the CMOS.Did you also re-seat your video card?
Are you METICULOUS when working inside your computer?
Don't get me wrong but I've seen people who think they are doing things carefully when in fact they really need to have their hands amputated to protect them from themselves.Quote

Yeah, I also tried the on-board video card. And yes I am VERY meticulous. After all, it is like hundreds of dollars worth of parts that I don't want to waste.*bump*Quote
Have you tried a new Power Supply Unit?

Have you tried disconnecting floppy and CD-ROM drives to see if one is faulty?
I have tried disconnecting the CD and floppy drives, but however I do not think it is the power supply because i was working fine for 2-3 days before this happened out of nowhere.issue is with the video card
Issue is with no video on monitor which may or may not be due to the video card. Please list components we are talking about.I hate to hijack this thread, and I am not trying to do so, but I came to this website trying to fix a problem I have had, and found that I am having almost the same exact problem as you. Perhaps we can find a common component. I will describe my problem and let you know what components I have.

My Components:
Processor: Intel P4 650
Memory: 2x Corsair CMX1024-3200PRO
Motherboard: Asus P5P800
Videocard: ATI AIW 9800 Pro 128M
Power Supply: Antec Truepower 2.0 430watt

My Problem:
My computer was running fine for about 1 year. I came home one day and my screen was frozen. I REBOOTED and was getting various BIOS error messages, then all of a sudden, there was no video card output. I attempted replacing the videocard with a known working card, but to no avail. Because of the bios errors I was getting, I decided to get a new motherboard. I got the same make and model (ASUS P5P800). I replaced the motherboard, and was still having the same problem with both videocards. The system would not even POST. The status lights on the RAM would not light up, even for a second. So, I thought I might have fried my processor. I got a new processor, installed it and... nothing different. I tried getting a new power supply, installed that and nothing. I have tried booting with both videocards and checked my monitor to make sure that was working. The only thing I have noticed different is, every once in a while the one orange status light on the one stick of RAM will go on for about 10 seconds upon power. The light will then go off, then... nothing. I have 2 sticks of the RAM listed above. I have tried booting with both sticks, stick 1 only, stick 2 only and no ram at all. I am at the end of my rope here. I have unhooked all AGP and PCI cards and unplugged all SATA and IDE cables from the board and it is still HANGING in the same spot. I practically have a brand new system (replaced every component I can) and I know it has to be something totally stupid. I can not see both sticks of ram going bad at the same TIME. I have tested my monitor, and it does work.

If anyone has suggestions for me, please let me know. I need help with this, because I have NO idea what is going on. Perhaps we can help each other out with our problem.

Thanks:)

Solve : No startup, just beeping. Please help?

Answer»

Hi, I got a pretty OLD computer, AMD 900 mhz with 512 mb ram, and 120 mb ati video card. I was download a big PROGRAM over the internet and I left it overnight. When I got up, I got the message that has to do with video card problem and it said to reboot to get it to normal something like that. So I restart my computer and everything seem to be fine. Until I run a movie and noticed that there is static over the speaker and headphone. After testing the speaker on ANOTHER computer and see that the speaker is fine, than I open the case and check to see if everything is plug-in.

I noticed that everything is plugin fine except a 4 pins cable from the sound card is unpluged. So i went to the sond card mnual and it said to plug it into the audio slot in the cd rom drive, which I did. when I boot up, normally the computer will turn the monitor on and got through the startup. But this time, it just beep and beep and did not turn the monitor on. So I knew that was a mistake, so I unplug the cable and restart and same thing happen. Then I waited a few minutes and restart and everything went fine and run smoothly.

I knew the pronblem with the static is mostly likely the sound card. So I went tothe store and bought a new sound card to replace, and the same problem started again (monitor not on and beeping). So I switch back the old sound card thinking it might be hardware conflict resulted from the new sound card, but the beeping and monitor is on turn on continues. I noticed that the CPU fan is working and video card fan is working and the fan from the power supply is working and the monitor is working when tested on a DIFFERENT computer.

Please HELP. Thank you. I am so bad with computer. It seems like I turn a very minor problem into a major one.

Solve : My mouse wont move horizontally?

Answer» OK, ive tried to do a few things but i cannot get my mouse to move left or right....however it will move vertically just fine. This just happened out of nowhere a few weeks ago. if i try to move left or right the mouse barely moves, it just kinda jerks to the left of the screen, and there is no way to drag it back to the right, the more you try the more it slowly sucks it to the left of the screen.....i cleaned out my mouse and made sure that the rollers could be read because its a ball mouse.....what could be my problem and how do I fix it? thanksQuote
made sure that the rollers could be read
If the ball is clean & the rollers are clean & free to turn and the problem persists then it is probably a broken wire just near the mouse entry point.
This can be FIXED but really a new LASER type mouse with one of those new fangled scroll WHEELS is the way to go.lr42069...... It certainly sounds like there is lint or hair wrapped around one of the rollers.....( it doesn't take much ) however , if the problem presists ....do as Fed SUGGESTS and get "one of those new fangled scroll wheels" LOL
They are cheap .......

dl65 Agreed. New mouse time, WHATEVER the cause of this malady.

Solve : Yamaha OPL3-SA?

Answer»

Can anybody help me out? Is there any place out there that might have the Yamaha OPL3-SA soundcard? I made a topic earlier discussing our old computer, the HP Pavilion 7285 200mhz desktop PC. Right now it has a Sound Blaster PCI, but I'd like to find a Yamaha OPL3-SA sound card, as that was the original card for the system. Can anybody do a search? I tried and I'm having a problem. It certainly isn't showing up on eBay for one thing, as for now. There's got to be a way to find that sound card again.Hi again, Darth. Finding rarities on eBay frequently requires a weekly search. EVERYTHING turns up there eventually.

I would prefer a genuine soundlaster in an old MACHINE persosnally for greatest compatibility. What attraction does the Yamaha have other than historical accuracy? :-?Well, for one thing, I liked its wavetable midi sound better than that of the Sound Blaster PCI. As a matter of fact, I saw this 16 bit Yamaha sound card on eBay. GX1_Man, could this be the OPL3_SA? I got no reply from the seller as of yet.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Yamaha-16-Bit-ISA-Sound-Card_W0QQitemZ5216203504QQcategoryZ3701QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemThis could be it. It would be best to have the seller e-mail you any WRITING on the card - FCC ID#, model # if listed, chip markings, etc. Then we could find out for sure what it is. There are MANY variations. If you can get the drivers it would be equivalent, I'm sure.I found another variation of the Yamaha sound card I'm looking for. The seller said he pulled it from his GRANDMOTHER's PC, and the card was working. Can you verify that this is the OPL3-SA? Look for these words:
Yamaha OPL YMF701-S Chip.

Here's the link to the auction page:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Yamaha-OPL-16bit-ISA-Soundcard-IDE-card-MIDI-Game-Port_W0QQitemZ6850942292QQcategoryZ3701QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItemI'msure that is not the exact card as HP didn't tuse Addonics cards as far as I know. It may work and drivers are available and it is an ISA card and it does have a Yamaha chip.

The fact that it has CD connectors further makes it suspect that it is EXACTLY what you are looking for. These were present on the EARLIEST versions of CD drives, beforoe the ATAPI standard was set. the sound card actually interfaced with the CD rather than the IDE outs on the motherboard. The price seems reasonable and I don't see it going much, if any, beyond that. The Yamaha OPL3-SAx sound card also had an MPU-401 driver along with it. Do you know where I might find that? I need to be sure if I do find the driver, that I can get that MPU-401 midi wavetable to work. The correct driver for the correct card will have that feature.
