Solve : Problem with External HDD?

Answer»

Hi, I've been having a problem with my Kaser Storage Vault EXTERNAL hard drive SINCE last night. It's hard to remember exactly what happened, but after I turned the external HDDs POWER off, a balloon message appeared saying I had lost data. Now, whenever I turn on and connect the HDD, instead of showing up in My Computer as "SVault (F:)" like it used to, it now appears as a second Local Disk. And, when I try to access the files, it says the disk is not formatted and asks me to format it. Screenshot:

So if there's any way I could access my files again, I'd really appreciate any help. ThanksHi, Please try the same external hard drive on another computer and check if you get the same error message. If yes the external hardware might be corrupted. if not please try system restore on this computer and then connect.I've tried it on three computers and it's the same every time If it makes a difference, in the disks properties, it says 0 bytes are free, out of 0 bytes. In disk management, it says 232.89 GB out of 232.89 is free. Well if it's corrupted I guess nothing can be done. ThanksAs you are not ABLE to access the data on the external hard drive you will have to take a risk of formating the hard drive. if you are okay formatting the hard drive do it and check if you can access the hard drive.Right click My Computer...
Select Manage then Disk Management...
Find the drive and right click it and select Properties...
Report BACK with your findings.

Sounds like it was unplugged prematurely and it may say RAW...

Solve : AMD 64 Bit help?

Answer»

I am Building a computer and it is an AMD 64 Bit CPU.

Now Win Vista comes in 64 Bit but I can't find Win XP Pro in 64 Bit why??

I don't want Vista I always liked Win XP Pro but it only comes in 32 Bit.

If My CPU is an AMD 64 Bit and I run Win XP Pro 32 Bit will my CPU run Slower or will it not Process as fast?

Or does this mean something els when we talk about the Operating SYSTEM??You can get XP Pro X64 - I'm running it right now.
Just because you have a 64 bit CPU doesn't mean you need a 64 bit OS though, 32 bit will run just fine.
Hope this helps.http://geekswithblogs.net/eknowlogy/archive/2006/07/10/84636.aspx

something that can help make a decision.I need to find Win XP Pro X64 with Service Pack 3.
And does it not come with the Consale Pannel on the CD for runing Commands and things LIKE that??there is no SP3 for XP64, SINCE it is essentially the same as Windows server 2003 (or was it 2005?). Either way, you would need to purchase a copy from Microsoft.

Quote from: nymph4 on March 15, 2009, 11:54:49 AM

I need to find Win XP Pro X64 with Service Pack 3.
As BC said, it's not based on XP, it's based on Server 2003, so SP2 is the latest update.that's the term I was looking for- "based on"- not "essentially the same"Before I get Win XP PRO 64 Bit with Service PACE 2.

I have seen a Lot about it not beeing that good and Win XP Pro 32 Bit would be more stable.

Does anybody think Good or Bad about Win XP Pro 32 or 64 BitYes......or wait......No.

Solve : Something is wrong with my pc,?

Answer»

I've taken and uploaded some pics.
I'll just start chronologically: About two weeks ago I started noticing a blink of dicoleration troughout my computer screen. This used to happen momentarally and then go away. At first I just ignored it. Then later it started lasting longer and longer until the point when my application crashed. So i thought I'll just reinstall the gfx drivers when I have time. Now what happens whenever I launch an app that uses a 3d accelerator for after about a min, my whole computer crashes. And after I restart it, it's completely SCREWED up (As seen in pics). At that point it wouldn't even LOAD up windows after have the vista loading screen it just goes blank. Last night I force shut DOWNED it so many times I corrupted my hard drive forcing me to do a system restore using the backup drive. Now since this is kinda a bit hard to describe so I didn't have MUCH luck searching for it online. I THINK It might be a bad gfx card, or an overloaded power supply. Now when I got the PC a couple years back I upgraded the GFX card to nVidia 8600(Installed by me) and along with it upgraded the 400 wats power supply to 600 (Installed by pro). So does any one know what's going and/or how to solve it?

That typically looks like a video RAM problem. It could also be the video cooler.
It should be free of all dirt and debris and turn very freely when you tweak it with your finger.
It it does not spin freely, then it will probably need to be replaced.

If I had that video card here, I'd clean the video ram with Denatured Alcohol and a toothbrush.
Then clean the edge connector and make sure the board is completely DRY before reinstalling it into the PC.

I've saved many a video card by just cleaning them. Ram sticks too.

Good Luck,
The Shadow

Solve : Downloaded videos are very dark on monitor.?

Answer»

Hi, I apologize in advance if this is not a hardware issue, just can't seem to figure out.
When I play any downloaded movie, whether it's the H.D. or a burned disk, the picture is very dark.
I've tried the same movies in other computers, and they're fine. I have not changed my video card, or any other hardware recently. If I play a store bought dvd, it works fine also.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. What player?Quote from: Broni on MARCH 15, 2009, 07:42:44 PM

What player?
It doesn't seem to matter which player, I usually use Win. Media Player 9, but downloaded a few new players to eliminate that possibility. WMP has always worked in the past on this computer as well.perhaps its the video quality itself???Quote

I have tried Real Player, something called GOM Player, and other ones that I downloaded just for trial and error purposes, and have since deleted. It is definitely not player dependent. I used WMP on this same computer to watch the same videos. It's very frustrating.Check VLC Player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/
It may be some codec issue.Quote from: Broni on March 15, 2009, 09:30:29 PM
Check VLC Player: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Thanks for the suggestion, however as I suspected, it most definitely is not a video player issue at all. I did install the VLC player as you suggested, and it still didn't work. So, I have tried at least 5 video players, all with the same result. Remember that these same videos played on the same computer using the WMP that I've always used, so it's not a codec issue either. I am completely out of ideas.Have you tried a different monitor?Quote from: JJ 3000 on March 16, 2009, 01:09:51 AM
Have you tried a different monitor?
Hi, was pretty sure monitor wasn't the issue because it has always played these same videos. But, I went ahead and checked it anyway. It didn't work there either, I knew it was definitely a computer issue, not player, etc. Even so, I always will check everyone's solution just in CASE I might have missed something or, as in this case, gets me thinking ALONG a new line.
I resolved the problem. Just for the *censored* of it, I went to Nvidias website and downloaded the APPLICABLE drivers again. Once I rebooted with the new drivers, I was golden. The strange thing is that nothing was ever changed with the videos, or the video card.
One more cool thing, for many months I had a "burned" spot on a portion of my LCD. I thought my monitor was going, or a static image had been left on for too long. I was really bummed because it was a 26" Dell wide screen. The newly installed drivers took care of that issue as well. I guess it was a driver associated anomaly.
ThanksBeautiful

Solve : Low Sound Level?

Answer»

For no "apparent" reason the sound from my desk TOP SPEAKERS has become very low. I first just assumed it was the speakers as everything I checked seemed OK, they were 10 YEARS old anyway. The new set has the same problem, very low sound. I have checked all VOLUME settings and hook ups and there are no conflicts shown within the device manager.

I am tempted to disable all of the devices in the "sound, video and game controller" icon as suggested in the trouble shooting guides and let windows find them again after I reboot. But I am afraid that I will simply loose everything in that icon. Any suggestions? Thanks.

This is my system:

Solve : New Computer, Will Not Stay on for Long?

I just built a new COMPUTER. I will list the parts below.

RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134012

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188036

PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817148027

When I first TURN it on, It will stay on for about a minute. If I try again, it will power up and then turn off approx 3 seconds later.

Also I NOTICED that after it turns off, the NUMLOCK key on my keyboard will remain on even though the computer is now off.

Any help would be appreciated.I narrowed it down to the CPU power supply. When the 4 pin is plugged in, it resets every 30 seconds or so, when it is unplugged, it runs continuously. Would this be a problem with the PSU or the motherboard? Thermal paste applied properly ? ?
All MBoard standoffs in place ? ?
Are you using an 8 pin connector on the 4 pin jack ? ?
What BEEPS if any are you getting at Post ? ?its an 8 pin slot but i only have a 4 pin connector. would this be the problem?Quote from: sepulveda on March 19, 2009, 10:53:04 PM

Solve : Creative Sound Blaster Live 5.1 Digital problems?

Answer»

I have a DELL, running Windows XP and have developed a problem. My computer is very, very slow at times, freezes at other times and RUNS normal at still other times. I use Spyware Doctor, have done a full system check and Spyware turned up nothing, run Spybot and still nothing. A couple of days ago, while playing a game downloaded from Big Fish I got the dreaded blue screen! Immediately I turned off my computer, when I turned it back on I received this message from Microsoft:

This problem was caused by Creative Sound Blaster Live 5.1 Digital, which was created by Creative Technology Ltd.

Solution

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To solve this problem, follow these steps:

Go online to the following website:

Creative Technology Ltd

Find SBL5DL_PCPatch_LB_3.exe, and then install

Well, going to this site I found there was no patch, did a internet search and found nothing. I did do updates on Creative Sound Blaster Live 5.1 Digital, figuring that was better than nothing but I am afraid to play the game again in case the updates didn't FIX the problem and I end up in serious trouble. When I first bought and downloaded the game it was messed up, had to unload and reload and it plays fine now.

Has anyone else had this problem? Can anyone HELP me?
Thanks so much,
Jazz

Solve : Maximum capacity hard disk that I can use on my system (Info Given)?

Answer»

Hello guyz,
I have a system and was planing to buy a new HARD disk. I wanted to know about my system's maximum hard disk capacity.. Following is the information of my system (got through Tune-up System Information). Tell me if you need any more info.

Processor Info
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.0Ghz
Code name: Northwood
L1 Cache: 20 KB
L2 Cache: 512 KB
Socket: XU1 Processor
Model: FAMILY 15 Model 2 Level 4

Bios Info
Manufacturer: Compaq
Date: 08/15/2002
Version: 686O2 v2.14
Size: 512 KB

Memory: 768 MB (512+256)
Mainboard: Compaq 07E4h
System Model: Evo D510 SFF

Currently I have two have hard disks:
1. Western Digital (300 GB, Cache 8 MB, ATA)
2. Maxtor (80 GB, Cache 2 MB, ATA)

There are no SATA cables in my system.

Would be thankful if anyone could tell me about the maximum hardisk capacity my system can recognize..127GB

The IDE controller is a 28-bit....you can INSTALL a 48-bit LBA controller to go BEYOND 127GB.

Your 300GB if installed will likely format only to 127GB or not work at all.Quote from: DaveLembke on March 16, 2009, 02:53:51 PM

I dont UNDERSTAND My 300 Gb is working fine... In bios it shows 300 gb and XP also recognize it fully... I have not had any problems with it.

EDIT: I heard about "Maxtor Big Drive Enabler" that it converts the 28-bit thing to 48-bit thing. But when I tried to install it, it gave me following message:

"Support is currently enabled for 48-bit Local Block Addressing (LBA) for ATAPI disk drives. You do not need to run this registry update. Click OK to exit."

Does it mean that I already have what you were talking about?

Solve : New Monitor problem?

Answer»

I just built myself a new computer. Everything seems to be working fine with the computer but the new monitor is giving me problems. My old monitor works fine with the new COMP.

When I plug the new monitor in all I get is a BLANK screen with a box in the middle saying "Analog Out Of Range 63.6 KHZ / 85 HZ" If I have it PLUGGED in while I restart the comp the MoBo screen will appear and then windows will begin starting up. Halfway thru the startup the screen will GO BACK to the Analog message. I can unplug it and replug in my old monitor to show that windows did start up properly. The monitor is a LG model W1952TQ.

Anyone have any ideas? You need to set your refresh rate to something elsehow do I do that?Nevermind, I figured it out. It was set to 85 and once I turned to anything lower than that the monitor worked. Thanks for the help.

Solve : Help! My mom wont switch to high speed! (whats the fastest/best modem?)?

That's really nice.

Maybe the mom wants to use what she wants to use. Suggestions may be made, but it is up to the person to decide what to do.I know but i thought you'd want to do something you already do but do it faster? But obviously the mom doesn't care that she's still using dialup She plays cash games at worldwinner. She doesnt realize that faster load time = more games played = more moneyThat's a good example. Try to educate her, and not just confront her. AOL users can be very loyal. AOL does a good job of creating an environment where the user feels safe and welcome. She's also been getting alot of 'error code 104' in the middle of the game. Last time she slammed her fist on the table, lol.

Hey, does anyone know why a computer would suddenly restart when playing games? this is funny.........my mom also has a dial-up connection and when I go to service her computer is drives me crazy..

If the computer is restarting when you are online, it may be because you have contracted a WORM...

I did a fresh installation of my mom's computer a while back and could NOT get any updates because within seconds of being connected, it would restart without any of my doing........It turned out that, because the Windows XP installation disk I was using was the ORIGINAL WinXP ( no FIREWALL or security center) and without a router or hardware firewall protecting the PC, I was wide open to attacks.

It finally dawned on me to put up a temporary firewall (PC TOOLS free firewall), before connecting. Then I was able to get all the update and do what I had to do..

The point is, try restoring Windows Firewall DEFAULT settings and see if that helps...I don't know what version of Windows you are using but perhaps your online games opened some ports that shouldn't be open, or YOU accidentally opened some ports that shouldn't be open... Above all else, make sure there is a firewall installed, PERIOD.

It only restarts online sometimes.

Restarts while playing games OFFLINE.

Its probably a hardware issue. dxdiag came back all normal.I would say do a Kaspersky online scan, but that would probably take two days at least, with a dial up connection... so forget that for now

At any rate, first thing I would try is running a THOROUGH anti-virus scan.......I don't mean running a single program over and over, I mean using various programs...

I generally use this combination......AVG, Spybot S&D, Malwarebytes....Sometimes if one program will not detect a virus, another will.........It might take a long time to download and update them with dial-up, but they are free..

If possible, take a snap shot of what's in the "Process" tab of TASK Manager and post it, If a worm is running, we may be able to see it...IF there is a worm in there, at least we'll know and can likely attribute the problem to a worm........Those anti-virus programs that I SUGGESTED, may find worms as well.

i'm going to bed now.........i have head ache! try my suggestions and post back.....................I'll get back ASAP

Solve : How should I arrange Fans?

Answer»

In regards to my other post, i just went ahead and started buying parts for my pc....

But how should i arrange the fans on this pc case?

The overview says 2 side fans, 1 front fan, and 1 back fan.

How should this be arrange as in exhust/intake?

I was thinking 2 side ones and front = intake, while back one =exhust
Correct me if im wrong.

If you're using the stock fans, it's likely they'll already be set up in the best positions.
I have to say though, that configuration doesn't seem OPTIMAL to me.I'll agree with CALUM. Well in my computer i have 3 fans 1 is the for the side the intake one, the other is in the back the exhaust one, and of course the heat sink fan for the processor so that it won't overheat. no there not, they have to be bought with the caseSorry, that wasn't clear to me.
What fans are you buying, then?
Front should be intake and rear exhaust, but side fans can be tricky, it depends on the components you're cooling.
Example: As I have a single slot graphics card (exhausts hot air into the case) my side fan is exhaust. If my card was dual slot, I'd have the side fan as intake.
My CPU COOLER is not "top down" cooling, so a fan blowing onto it wouldn't help. If my cooler was top down, a fan blowing directly into it would be beneficial.Quote from: Calum on March 19, 2009, 11:46:13 AM

Well the fans are placed directly infront of or over the mainborad where the cpu sits.
Not down NEAR the video card.

Should side fans still be intake? It depends on the actual components and their cooling, and where the fans would be blowing onto/sucking from.

Why? To make money.

At first, I was sceptical that they made 500GB Flash drives, which is why I asked earlier:

At first, I was sceptical that they made 500GB Flash drives,

Fusion-io makes SSD (solid state drive) cards in 160GB, 320GB and 640GB capacities. A 1.28TB card is expected out in the second half of this year. Current pricing is quoted as "well under $30" per usable GB, which makes the biggest current card "well under" 19,200 dollars. How much "under" is a good question, since pricing is probably a matter for negotiation based on size of order. So only very specialist users will be using them.

They are not pen drives or memory cards as this picture shows.

What is the brand and model of your mobo?

Motherboard Model: DP965LTI'm sorry the 1066 will no be compatible with your motherboard.

From your motherboard manual:

Solve : No sound... Tried everything! Please help!!?

Answer» OK, I went through alot of OLD files and deleted some things. Apparently I deleted a file that is needed for my speakers on my laptop to work, and I can not get it fixed now. I have tried all of the troubleshooting, looking online and DOWNLOADING windows drivers, updating drivers, system restore.... I can not get it right. I also tried downloading the Quick Launch for my touch buttons, b/c the volume display onscreen has also disappeared. Headphones do play sounds, but not the speakers. And no system sounds on headphones either.... just music from my music. Please tell me you can help me... Thanks!!!

My Laptop:
HP Pavilion Entertainment PC
Windows XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
SP3
Genuine Intel CPU
T1350 @ 1.86GHz
1.86GHZ, 504 MB RAMdeleted some things. Can you list what you deleted or what folder you deleted?

Just reinstall the sound drivers.uninstall drivers and reinstall. That probably is your problem. I have already done that. I tried to update them first, no luck. Then uninstall and reinstall, nothing. I am sorry but I do not know what the file names were that I deleted. All I know is they were in the C Drive folder, at the bottom. Notepad files with odd names and only a line or two of text. Eample of one of the file names there- File name: 09425601b247fb0f884d. Could that have even AFFECTED the sound? Some one I know looked at it the other day and opened up the bottom of the laptop. I was talking to him about adding memory. Do you think he might have hurt something? All he removed was the little plastic pannel over the memory card.... I am afraid I will have to reformat. When I press the power buttont o manually shut down(having trouble shutting down due to computer freezing up) the speakers make an odd noise like static, or the sound you hear from a microphone when you rub your hand over it. Thanks for your help! I really do not want to reformat... Try this:
Start >>> Run
write this command: services.msc
and press Enter
Go to: Windows Audio click there and
to the Start up Type be sure that there is Automatic
to the Service Status click Start and OK.

I'm suggesting you this because a lot of viruses cause that even if you delete the virus they stop this application.
Cheers.Do a system restore to before you deleted the files.

1. Click Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore

2. Select the Restore my computer to an earlier time option and click next.

3. Select the day and the restore point you wish to restore and click next.Quote from: dr_iton on March 19, 2009, 05:44:01 PM

Done this 3 times... I can no longer system restore.

Also need to mention, I can listen to my music through headphones, but no systrm sounds .no system sound, so i guess nothing's wrong with your computer in terms of hardware and drivers? I think it's speakers issue? I'm guessing because i am not at your pc to look at it.

First in terms of durability and performance, Intel is better. And a lesser disk space would mean only you will be able to store less. But having 1 TB would mean that defragmentation will TAKE a lot longer. but performance should not be noticebly different.

Customized builds, especially for laptops will be very expensive. But if you want performance, i would suggest Alienware, especially when money is not a factor. or a Dell XPS 1530 or 1730, if you are gaming.

Solve : I found a new CPU if you guy's could look @ it and let me know what u think.?

Answer» http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/saving/show.asp?id=1864431
If a couple of u could look @ this configuration and let me know what u think. Are if u think i should change some of componets let me know , but this CPU is in my price range.

Help please.Well, first I see you have 9500GT's on there, which isn't bad but you could do better depending on your budget. What's your max budget you want to cap your spending on the gamer PC at? Then we can go through and see what you can improve on if anything.

Even 2 radeon HD 4670's will beat out 2 9500gT's. 9500gT's are for games like AOE3. I play that game and so 9500GT in my system is fine enough. The CPU looks good. I would get a bigger PSU and I would CHOOSE different video cards. I assume you will be using the computer for gaming? For gaming you usually do not want anything less than a 600 ie.. 8600, 9600 etc... you might want to think about using 1 hd 4870 or 1 260gtx I think you might get better performance with one of those cards than the 9500's in SLI.It's TWO 9500's does this make a difference, i cant afford the GTX,
thats about my max budget,
Would i be better off with a single card maybe a 8600, or 9600.

can you go through the LIST and FIND me a better card?Quote from: kajun on March 16, 2009, 11:24:21 PM

It kind of does, in a sense, your doubling speeds in theory...

But still 9500's are getting old, and i reckon you could do better,
9800 are getting cheaper, its worth it....Quote from: amy007 on March 17, 2009, 05:12:26 AM

Solve : Procesor cache?

Answer»

As my laptop (toshiba tecra M1) is TOTALLY out dated and literally falls apart (screen needs to be supported, boxes are falling of,...) I'm REALLY in need of a new laptop.
So I went to the site of dell and found the Dell VOSTRO 17
with this setup
Code: [Select]PROCESSOR Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T5870 (2.0 GHz, 2 MB L2 Cache, 800 MHz FSB) bewerken
BESTURINGSSYSTEEM Legitieme Windows Vista® Ultimate SP1 - Nederlands bewerken
VERZENDINGSDOCUMENTEN Nederlands - Documentatie voor Vostro-laptop bewerken
TOETSENBORD Internal Keyboard - Belgian (AZERTY) bewerken
LCD-SCHERM 17-inch WXGA+-breedbeeldscherm (1.440 x 900) met niet-schitterende coating bewerken
GEÏNTEGREERDE WEBCAM Glanzend zwart zonder CAMERA bewerken
GEHEUGEN 4.096 MB 667 MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2 x 2.048] bewerken
HARDE SCHIJF 250GB (7200rpm) SATA Hard Drive with Free Fall Sensor bewerken
GRAFISCHE KAART 256 MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ 8600M GS (128-bits) grafische kaart bewerken
OPTISCH(E) STATION(S) Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Slot Load Drive including Software bewerken
HOOFDBATTERIJ 8-cel lithium-ion hoofdbatterij (77 W/h) bewerken
for the price of 840euro.
Now I'm thinking of upgrading the processor to: Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T8100 (2,10 GHz, 3 MB L2-cache, 800 MHz FSB)
But it costs 50euro more, is it smart to do that?
And an other thing isn't it STUPID to have a processor with 800Mhz and a RAM that only has 667MHz?

Thanks in advance

Jonas For €50, I don't think that upgrade is worth it.
The T8100's main advantages are a slight clock speed and L2 cache advantage, plus better power saving features.
As for the RAM speed, it's not really important.
Hope this helps.

Is that what your asking? If I'm on you tube or live leak or any thing like that, a video will start playing and about every minute it will stop. It will have the circle going around in the center. I tried that, but it only goes about 1/4 of the way then stops. The video plays to that point then stops there also.If it does it with all videos, maybe your hard drive is nearly full and/or needs defragmentingServer error perhaps?what type of ISP connection do you have? truenorthI have Road Runner. Solve : No POST or USB Devices On: Bad PSU??

Answer»

Hello everyone! Let me give you a little run down of my situation thus far: A few days after Christmas I purchased a brand new GTX 260 to replace my pathetic 7600GT. However, upon arrival, the sheer size of the card blew my 7600 out of the water. It sadly covers the majority of my SATA ports, FORCING me to squeeze the cables just underneath the card. However, this isn't the issue. Two days ago my computer was running just fine and I was browsing the internet when it shutdown unexpectedly. Upon trying to reboot it I received no POST or Monitor display, and my video cards fans had stopped spinning, which led me to believe my BRAND NEW GTX 260 had just failed on me. So I swapped it out for the 7600 and rebooted. All the components inside seemed to be powered: LED fans, CPU Heatsink, GPU, HDDs, etc, but there was no monitor display and none of my USB devices were on like they usually are upon booting the system. I suppose my QUESTION is did I blow my 550w power supply when i introduced this goliath video card? I know that 550w is supposed to be sufficient but I'm not completely sure. If you need any more information regarding my issue, ask! Any help is greatly appreciated!

Here's mah specs:
Windows Vista Pro
MSI G33M Mobo
Pentium D 3.0
Evga GTX260
2x1gb Patriot somethingorother, 2x1gb G.skill DDR2
Rosewill 550w PSU
Pwer supplies do go bad. If you have an old motherboard and a voltmeter you might be able to test the power supply.
But, more often it is the motherboard that goes. It has more things that can go bad and is easily damaged.
Is it under warranty?Yeah I believe it's still under warranty. I only purchased it a few months ago, so it better be! It was pretty chinsy-cheap too. Maybe I shoulda shelled out a little more cash for the MoBo, because now i'm stuck with this dwarf MoBo and a massive card. From the information i've given should I RMA my MoBo or check into my power supply? I don't have a spare lying around and would rather replace my MoBo first before buying a 600+ watt PSU.Return it immediately and if they are open to it put the credit towards another board other than MSI...
In the meantime see if you can borrow another PSU to be sure.UPDATE!: I RMAed the MoBo and card, put them in, worked like a charm, but then same issue. I just would like to confirm that this points at a power supply fault, correct? This is considering a new video card and MoBo not working together is caused by this crappy power supply, not broken parts.Maybe it Has something to do with Your Name NEVER Know Now Do Youu
Alright I'd like to just confirm what is currently wrong with my computer. My Video Card fan is not spinning, and this one is brand new! Most of the components are powered except for my case fans which I have to unplug and replug in to get to turn on. There is no display, no POST, no beeps, etc. I believe my power supply is a bit low on amps of the 12+v rails, but I cannot tell if my power supply is the reason my card is not turning on/FRIED. Any suggestions? I'm currently considering replace my 550 watt with something a little more like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139009 but if the power supply is not the bad egg in this batch I'd like to avoid dropping $140 on a new PSU.I 'm just wondering if the size of your new card isn't causing an overheating problem due to perhaps a constricted airflow in the case. Overheating could have damaged the processor or the board.......power supply is always a possibility with the new card drawing more power...........minimum system requirement is a 500 watt supply for that card (their website).............you could be light in wattage with everything running.Well I don't really think air flow is a big deal, but then again, my case is quite a mess. (see attached photos, rofl) If that's the case just what can I do? Does that mean that I just fried another board after just RMAing it? That's embarassing.

Here's the fotos, yuck:

http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/5222/asdfkiz.jpg
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/2365/dsc02734v.jpg

Note: The close up is to emphasize just how little access I have to my SATA ports. My SATA cable is the blue blob, and yes, it's upside-down. Hope using the ones underneath the card aren't causing the card to be slightly dislodged or something. bump?

Solve : Problem Replacing LCD Inverter for Hp Pavilion Dv1000 Laptop?

Answer»

Hi, I just replaced the LCD INVERTER on my dv1000 because my back LIGHT stopped working. I have a few PROBLEMS...

I have to attempt to boot up my laptop multiple times before the lcd will finally turn on. When it finally turns on it makes a little high pitched noise...

Also, I noticed that the trim AROUND the LCD where the new inverter was located seemed like it was getting really hot. I removed the lcd covering to investigate the inverter and I found that it was getting so hot it actually melted some of the plastic (heat or static shield??) around the chip.

Lastly (yes, theres more), the LCD will only even have a CHANCE of TURNING on if I have the ac power cord plugged into it. The LCD will not light up if the laptop is only running off the batteries...

Ahhh, this is very frustrating and any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

I'm hoping some one has had one of these and KNOWS what I have to do, I wouldn't think it would be to difficult, and they ALWAYS say try the easiest things FIRST. Solve : I and II?

Answer»

I have an antec computer case (SX635) and there are TWO plugs inside, coming from the front PANEL, each with a red and a black wire going to it and they are labeled I and II. They come from the front panel and on the door are two lights, also labeled I and II. Can anyone tell me what they are for and where do they get plugged into the motherboard? ThanksWelcome to the CH forums.

The front bezel of your box is shown here and seems like there are more than two connectors coming from it. There should (might) be one each for the power and HARD drive LEDS and one for each of the power on BUTTON and the reset button making a total of four. The image is not good enough to show I and II on the bezel.

Exactly where they connect to the motherboard depends on the motherboard specs, and you don't indicate which mobo you are using, but the mobo manual should show this in detail.

Good luckI and II (Roman 1 and 2) are just identifiers. They can be for what you want. Usually the green one is used for power and red for HDD activity.

I ordered all this for under $275 .. only have $325 left in my budget
....................................... .................................
That is as far as I got please any suggestions on other additions would be great.

I play WOW , STEAM games, mostly into all MMORPG games except Aeria or Acclaim MADE .Wanting a set up that will handle COD and other games in that class. not looking to play Crysis. Thats not much of an upgrade... Whats your total upgrade budget? You will need to upgrade everything becides the HDD and case and dvd drives pretty muchMy budget was $600 and already spent $275, I am just using it for light gaming, email/facebook. I am already pleased with how my PC handles WOW just had extra cash and have been eyeing up the crossfire. I do not store pics music or videos on my PC, so if thats not enough what do you suggest?Wait.... are those your 2 computers you want to upgrade?I am only upgrading one of them the mini ATX Ya... what one is that?yeah and be sure you got a decent video card to go with your pc so you GET decent frame rates. Anything in Nvidia 8-9 SERIES or HD 4000 series would be good and you don't need a high end card. You're playing WOW, which I see is not needing crysis level graphics.I would consider the 4870 a high end card

Solve : printer cannot print?

Answer»

hi, there, i got a NEW lemark printer model X5070, it just cant use the black cartridge, everytimes i print stuff, it uses the colour cartridge, is that my setting problem hence the printer wont use the black cartridge in LIEU of colour cartridge (printer software/program? shows that the black cartridge is full), currently using the plantium 4, 2G ram, win XP
thanks in advanceWhy don't you try to check the settings for your printer and see if you have made any changes that would make your printer to not print in black but in color.Could be a defective cartridge or printer. After checking out KP's advice I'd take it where I purchased it and have them check it out with a new black cartridge first...at their expense of course.

Alan <>< I am not familiar with any of the Lexmark printers. However it is quite common with new printers that a "tab" must be removed from the cartridges that come packaged with the printer before the cartridge will allow ink to flow. Was this required/done? truenorthhi, there,
to ale52 : the problem i purchased from oversea, it 's costly if i POST to oversea? anyother idea that i could save some money
To trueworth: what do you mean by "tab", is that the PAPER stick to the catridge, course of i did remove it
thank you guysjohnha, Yes it sounds LIKE the "tab" i referred to is the "paper Stick to the cartridge" that you did remove. The next suggestion i would make is to do a considerable NUMBER of head cleanings (one after another) between 7-10 and then try a print.Seeing as your colour printing seems to be OK you could select your print tests after you do the head cleanings to be only a "black" print so as to reduce the waste of your coloured ink cartridges. If after your head cleaning operations your black ink performance has not improved then as ale52 has suggested i would try another black ink cartridge. However if it is a new printer their tech support should be contacted (desireably by telephone) and the problem explained. In my experience with other printer manufacturers they usually arrange for repair/replacement of the printer with no cost to you (including free shipping). So you might want to try that option.truenorth

Solve : Computer Building help?

Answer»

I just Built a computer and I am GOING to Buy Win XP Pro. with Service Pack 2. and Install it onto my computer.

The Win XP CD will come with the License Number that I will have to enter to activate my copy of Win XP I get this.

But say in 6. Months my SYSTEM goes down and I have to Re Install my copy of Win XP if I enter the License Number to activate it it will tell me
This Copy Of Win Is In Use

And it will make me Buy a new License Number

What is the Deal I payed for it I own it I have it.
?Where are you reading this? [must reregister in 6 mo & pay again]Well what I ment was you get a Key CODE or Number with every CD.
And when you Install Win XP and it is Installed it will say Please Enter Your Lisense Number.

And it activates Win XP over the NET.

Now if my system goes down and I Re Install Win XP again and enter the Number it will try to activate it ovr the net and tell me the Number or iesens Number is in UES.

It happened befor to me.If you have to rebuild the machine they let you reactivate it once or twice. If you activate the same copy many times that you get a message to call and get it activated...they want to be sure your not using the same copy over and over.

This isn't a big deal.

well, you just call microsoft and get them to activate for you, but KEEP the proof of purchase and i think you'd be okay.

Solve : Help me undo a shift-delete?

Answer»

Apoligies if this is in the wrong spot, I couldn't find a more suitable place.

So the story goes something like this... I was making a movie featuring the MMO Warhammer: Age of Reckoning USING fraps and windows movie maker. After weeks of editing and lots of time and effort I had finally finished! Excited and ready to post the movie into relative forums, Somehow while deleting unused recordings I accidently (no idea how) deleted ALL of my recorded files.

They weren't in my rubbish bin because, of course, I shift deleted them.

Anyone been through a similar process have any tips? I have USED 4 programs already that claim they will retrieve my shift-deleted data, but all I get back are some word/excel files and no videos.

Now it's only a movie so Im not really willing to pay big dollars for retrieving it, but certainly am willing to go to alot of effort, as I already have!

THANKS in advancehttp://www.undelete-plus.com/

This tool is what I use for data deleted in this manner. Success in getting all or majority of data back is dependant on how soon you catch the problem and avoid saving new information before running this utility. When data is shift-deleted it becomes flagged as once again part of the pool of available hard drive space. Once new data overwrites blocks of say shift-deleted data you would only be able to partially recover data as for the sector blocks on the hard drive where the prior data resided binary 0's and 1's have been altered to the stamp of that new data.... so if the pattern for that block was 10101010 and flagged as shift-delete, and something new came along it could consume that location with say 00000011 in which the 10101010 is gone.

If extremely important to get the data back you can take your chances with a data RECOVERY center costing thousands of dollars which would try to READ the differences in the magnetic fields amplitude to assemble what was prior from now as they measure the magnetic strength as if stronger than normal, the prior binary value was 1 and is weaker than a prior matching value of 1, say it was 0 prior, it would have a slightly weaker magnetic signature vs a bit that was written as 1 and then 1 vs 0 and then 1 or 1 and then 0. Very complicated process and this process's success also determines on if the data block hasnt been over written more than once which would wash out the prior magnetic signature.

This data recovery principle that they use is similar to the days of recordable cassettes when you record once on it and then record again and in a quiet portion between the next tune you hear remnants of the prior recording due to an incomplete magnetic amplitude cancellation, but their equipment is able to measure and pull out the prior recorded information to recompose the original recorded data to an alternate drive and then give you your data that was gone.
Ihavenoidea try looking in Temp folder for your videos@TChai:

I declare Troll, here. Unfortunately I will also feed them.

Are you ever going to make a useful post here or simply make random, biased observations and assertions about what others post?

and why the .... would the videos be in the temp folder? Chances are he's CLOSED the application that made the videos, which I would imagine would delete the respective temporary files it created, which, being movie files would be large.

Additionally one wonders how Ihavenoidea would know what files were the video, assuming on the off-chance your random outburst is true and by some random stroke of luck they are even there, chances are they are not only named indescriptively but also split into multiple files.

There is nothing I can add to this post aside from the excellent advice DaveLembke has given, which while long is still a relatively short overview on the topic of deleted file recovery. Well, actually, I can add one thing-

Recuva is an OK recovery tool:

Solve : floppy drives?

Answer»

While backing up my new dell vostro 200 with xp pro. the wizard wanted to make a start up or rescue disk. I have no floppy drive. should I get one? if so should I get an internal or external? dusterdriver,Another chance to rant at the fact that the o/s software providers (usually microsoft) and the hardware manufacturers (a large multitude) never seem to talk to one another. The software is saying if you ever get into a crisis and NEED to recover your computer you will "need" a start up disk. The hardware manufacturer says well we can SAVE some money if we not include a floppy drive. To make things EVEN worse most computers are not shipped with O/S software (or even recovery disks). It is often required that you create your own recovery disk from an installed "recovery program" that came already installed on your computer. If you desire to have a floppy drive my suggestion would be a USB external. They are very inexpensive and GIVEN that the trend is to not include them anymore you would have a PORTABLE for future needs on other computers.truenorth

Solve : HDD has identity crisis?

Answer»

Maybe a fresh approach will help here. I wonder if I disconnect the printer (F:) and disconnect (uncable) the non-recognized Maxtor INTERNAL HDD, and then redo the WXP install. When that is complete, reconnect the Maxtor and go from there. Maybe it will recognize the Maxtor drive.Quote from: ras58396 on January 05, 2009, 04:12:51 AM

I very well may have deleted the partitions on the Maxtor, which was the F: drive before the new OS install.

Well, stick your XP CD back in and get to the partition screen and see if the E drive has an active partition.
If the drive space shows up as raw, then you deleted that partition.JJ 3000, I tried it...bad JuJu! The drive is there but it is unpartitioned. Since I am the problem, I will ask for advice before acting.
The HDD had data that I did not want to lose...so sad. Can I repartition it with the XP install CD or other method, then use PhotoRec or some other utility to recover the data?

If you highlight the raw space and press C to create a new partition, you may be able to access your data when you boot back into XP.
If that doesn't work, then http://www.recuva.com/ should help you get your data back. It's a free program
Good Luck.RAW space is an unpartitioned drive.

you create partitions in unallocated space.

unallocated space <> RAW .

deleting a partition deletes it from the Partition Table. Even if one was to recreate a partition of the same size, whatever program is used to create that partition will overwrite the Volume Boot record.

but a recovery tool should be able to get some important stuff back.Good JuJu, JJ and BC!!!! I repartitioned the "F:" drive and it now is visible to WXP. I will attempt the reccommended the recovery tool(s) tomorrow. Thanks to both of you!just JJ. I didn't really do anything. Okay JJ gave me the key earlier, but you did add to the confidence factor. Neither of you, or Patio, are short of experience. I appreciate your efforts.Tried to run http://www.recuva.com/ on the G: drive, but it came back saying "Unable to read boot sector".
When I go through the XP install procedure it sees this drive as D:. It is partitioned but not formatted.
Windows Explorer sees it as not formatted. Should I format it then try to recover?NO!!
do not format!
format=erase
try this
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDiskSo this drive had XP installed on it as well ? ?
You dould try booting to the XP CD and press R to enter the Recovery Console...
At the prompt type fixboot and hit Enter...
Remove the XP CD and re-boot.Patio,

XP not on this drive. I am GOING to try cgsecurity.Well this is for closure! After all the recommended options FAILED, I took the HDD into the mass storage lab at work. The engineers there were able to use some of their proprietary software to recover all my files. Thanks for all your help, I appreciate the effort.Wish i had a lab like that...

Good ending to an ordeal though.

Solve : Sony Vaio doesnt power?

Answer»

I have a old SONY Vaio model PCG-Grx500p.

My dad shipped my the laptop from Cali and after I received it, the laptop doesn't power up anymore. He SAID it worked before but it just needs a new charger, and so I bought a new one from Sony and still doesn't work. He also said that if that doesn't work then it might be the ac adapter inside the laptop.

If anyone that KNOW whats WRONG, please let me know asap. I would suggest to bring it to a repair shop.

Or if it's old enough the batteries could be to the POINT of not taking a charge.
Sometimes computer shops will test simple tings like batteries free, or if you know a Guy with a meter they can be helpful too

Solve : PC won't boot up?

Answer»

Can someone help? I'm trying to get this PC back up and running. It just randomly died one DAY. When you turn it on, the power comes on, but nothing happens. After turning the power off and on a few times, it will finally start the POST process. The farthest it GOT was to the Windows loading SCREEN and then it locked up. Now it doesn't even get there.
I can still go into the BIOS no problem, but it doesn't look like anything's wrong there. Someone recommended I try a memtest. It got about 42 errors after letting it run a few hours, ALTHOUGH I don't know if that's the main problem. Would a BAD memory card cause the initial no POST problem?

PC:
AM37 MB
1.8 GHz
256 MB RAMYes it would....If your getting errors in your memory I would try to swap your ram out and see if that helps.

Solve : Hard Drive Not Recognized?

Answer»

Hi everyone. I have a problem that I am hoping SOMEONE here can help me with. I have an external maxtor one touch hard drive that my son tripped on the usb cord and it was ripped from the back of the unit. So, as opposed to paying for a new external case I picked up a sata2 cable and a sata power adapter, but the thing is that the drive is not being recognized. Is there some sort of driver that I need to be able to use an external as an internal, or is it even possible to use an external internally, or could I even have picked up the wrong cable (sata2), the drive is a 500GB seagate barracuda 7200. My thanks to anyone who responds. -propsWell you have a number of things working against you....
But i doubt you can use an external as an internal WITHOUT inccuring some problems....

but then again im not the professional, hopefully CARBON helps here...your drivers is not been reconise or your computer just dont know if the harddrive is connected?

normally external harddrive dont need drivers for it to run

Solve : Buying memory advice needed?

I PICKED up a Inspiron 6000 at a yard sale and surprisingly it is quite clean and in good operation. However it has too little RAM and needs a larger hard drive. Solve : Speaker Fill?

Answer»

My system is currently using 4 speakers, connected to the front and rear ports on my sound card. I like getting a "full" sound from my stereo music, so I have "Speaker Fill" enabled in the Realtek Audio control panel. I don't like opening the panel a lot, so I just leave Speaker Fill enabled all the time.
When I play games that support surround sound, I can hear sound coming out of the rear speakers, but I am wondering if this is the same sound coming from the front speakers? Basically, when I have Speaker Fill enabled, does it still use all surround sound audio channels, or does it continue just mirroring what the front speaker outputs?Well, it seems that you can't tell by listening to it. Or can you?
The surround sound concept has to do with the way people perceive sounds. And this is where we could get into a long discussion about to perception and reality.

In theory, if you had a pair of headphones on your head, and if your head was held in a vise so the head couldn't move, and if you are not allowed to look around and see what's behind you, then you might perceive that sounds are coming from behind you or in front of you with just a pair of earphones that have only two transducers. That's because you only have two ears. As to why we need to have four loudspeakers to reproduce spatula sound -- that is going way beyond the general tone of this website.
Read your documentation very carefully. It should explain that when you force the fill sound on all the time it just copies whatever is on the front speakers to the back speakers. Or attempts to do some sort of matrix transferr and put some kind of filtering on the back speakers. If you want real four channel sound, you have to have for actual channels. This makes more sense in a large Auditorium or theater where people need to have separate sound sources to create the illusion of special sound. But if they all wore headphones, and they didn't move their HEADS, only two transducers would be needed. It sounds to me that it would mirror it. Try turning it off and see what happens It took some testing, but I think Speaker Fill does mirror sounds no MATTER what the sound coming through is. Oh well, it doesn't make that much of a difference, right Geek-9pm?Yes, not much difference.
What we're discussing here is some the effectiveness of of reproducing sound in a small space in giving the human hearing the sensation in a being in open area.
If you have high quality speakers, and in a small room with good sound characteristics, you'll enjoy the surround sound when it's available. But this is mostly effective while watching a high-quality television presentation or in PLAYING in very well done computer game.
Earlier in it was already mentioned, this is more important in a theater because of a large space is more difficult to give people a sense of true sound unless you have lots of loudspeakers. In in a large area, like a movie theater, our ears can tell if the sound is coming from just one loudspeaker or if it's coming from two separate loudspeakers. When it gets the point of about 5 channel sound, the human ear starts to a perceive sounds being the somewhere ins the space between the loudspeakers.

Below here is a good reference. Good, yes, but not absolutely true in every respect. Still, it is a good place to start in which to learn more. There you can find more links that take you to other sites that relates to this idea.

But, for instance, when you are in your sound control panel, or something, and there is the diagram with all the speakers, and it plays a tone out of each one, the front left will play even though it is the rear left, and vise verse. The same thing will be in a game. People moving will be coming from everywherecomputeruler,
Tomorrow you assignment is to read the link I posted five times.
Then later come back here for a POP quiz on Monday.

speaker fill just mirrors the sound, Dolby digital does not
I was going to put that on the quiz! here, let me help geek:

Code: [Select]&geek9pm->overlyverbose(false);

there Sorry if this has already been answered.

The game sound will be 'mirrored' UNLESS the game has its own system for surround sound, e.g NOT EAX, A3D, ECT unless your onboard realtek supports it...which I doubt.

for example, when playing Left 4 Dead on my onboard sound, the game needs EAX, so even if you set the game mode to 4 channel, only the front 2 will work, unless you have speaker fill on, in which case it will simply copy front to back.

Once I got my creative card (PCI-e X-Fi Extreme Audio) Even if I have Multi stereo surround on, when I start a game that utilises the EAX, for example L4D, it automatically switches this off.Ya, on my onboard, I couldnt get it to be a true 4.1 for the life of me. It was always mirrored. Even when set to 5.1 on the receiver. Then I got my auzentech prelude, and now its a true 4.1

Solve : Bad Sector on my C partition!?

Answer»

Hello folks,

After my C partition developed bad sectors, the OS eventually
failed, and I proceeded to reformat the C partition to find out
about the bad sectors. The question is:

1- Should I just give up on the HDD and throw it away?
2- Can I use the C partition again for re-installing the XP?
3- Rather than messing with the partitioning, can I use
the D partition for installing the XP?

Thank you for your help

Should I just give up on the HDD and throw it away?
If you ask me, yes.
Bad sectors have a tendency to spread out. Most experts recommend that you just save yourself the hassle and just but a new HDD. Here is also a interesting read if though if you want to try and save it:
http://diligent.tripod.com/ninelives.htm A couple of options. If XP is still installed, boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r
If you want to reinstall XP, boot to the XP CD and start the installation process by doing a FULL format of the drive (this runs chkdsk /r)

If CHECKDISK reports that there were unrecoverable ERRORS you can scrap the disk. Otherwise, checkdisk will mark the bad sectors and relocate data to good areas on the drive. A few bad sectors may not mean much, or they may be the beginning of a failing drive. Whether you try to repair the drive or just go ahead and replace it is your call.Thank you all for your responses!

Although I have re-formatted my C partition with
bad sectors, the INFORMATION about the other
partitions and their FILES is still intact. Where is
that information on the HDD located while my
C partition has been formatted?

zilooIn the master boot record, which is on the first sector of your drive and is not part of c: drive.

Solve : installed ram, now laptop wont run?

Answer»

hi there, i have a gateway mx3225 laptop runnin xp it came with 256MB ram stick in it, i looked up the max ram that i can use and everything showed 1GB so i bought a stick, but when i install it, nothing will run on my comp. the power light comes on, but that is all....... i had a 256mb so-dimm 200 pin DDR2 533 mhz pc-2 4200 stick in it, and i bought a 1GB so- dimm ddr2 pc2-5300 667mhz, which on the package showed would interchange. the guy at the store even pulled up my comp specs to make sure it would work. any info would be greatly appreciated. That exact model is not LISTED here: http://www.crucial.com/index.aspxthe guy at the store was having the same problem, on the crucial site.then he SAID he found my model somewhere. It appears to be the right specs and it should work. It's possible that the 1GB is defective, so take it back. If a replacement doesn't work, you'll have to contact Gateway.
http://support.gateway.com/s//Mobile/Q106/Magic/1008829nv.shtmli took it back, i am gonna BUY another one some where else and give it a try. what is FUNNY the stick was a kingston, and according to their site, 512 is the largest i can use
According to Gateway that machine will take 1G...Just to say that I had the same problem with a Sony laptop. The problem was that the RAM appeared to clip in but actually wasn't pushed in enough. Make sure that no part (or very little) of the copper connector is showing above the slot.you can just barely see the copper when it was installed. i did some reading up and this issue seems to be a problem on the mx3225. one guy tried 4 models of 1gb ram before he got one to work. so another guy having the same problem bought the same part number ram stick and his worked.unfortunately it is like $99 for a stick, but thanks to ebay i grabbed one for $19 ill post the results when i get it installed.RAM incompatibility...i figured i would post this for everyone to read, it may save other folks from trying to figure out whats going on..........

We no longer make 1GB modules that will work in this computer. We can no longer get the low density chips that are compatible with this and similar computer. You should return this memory to your place of purchase and see what parts Gateway recommend for this computer.
