Solve : Lcd and Lcd inverter problems.. Please help!!!? |
|
Answer» So I have a Compaq Presario V5000 and I've been having problems with the lcd.. I bought a NEW inverter and it helped for a bit.. The only thing I noticed was every now and then the backlight would go out and I would have to close the laptop and then open it back up to get it to turn on.. It started doing that more frequently and then the other night it went out and I couldn't get it to turn back on.. The backlight that is.. You can see the screen is on but it's just not light up.. So I ordered another new inverter (the first one is only 2 months old..) and I just RECEIVED it today.. I put it in and booted up the computer and everything was fine.. For about 10 mins.. Then the screen went out again and I can't get it to come back on.. Again it's just the backlight the actual screen is still on you can just barely see it because it's dark.. I should also mention that I replaced the entire lcd.. I bought a new screen and put that in 2 months ago with the first inverter.. I took out the new screen and stuck the old one in to check the inverter and to make sure it wasn't an issue with the new screen.. The old one wouldn't light up either and it did before so I know it's the inverter.. Basically what I WANT to know is, is it possible to get two inverters that are lemons?? The one that came today wasn't packaged very well at all! I PURCHASED both from ebay and both stated that they were "brand new".. Is there something I'm not aware of when I'm putting the inverters in.. I was insanely CAREFUL with both.. Any help would be much appreciated, I'm going crazy!! |

Solve : HP printer question? |
|
Answer» Hi...I've just bought a HP color laser printer 2025 , with manual duplex , yesterday I was printing one book , and I stopped before I finished printing the whole book , now I have half of the pages printed on both sides , and half printed one side only , my question is how can I get the printer to resume printing from where I had stopped yesterday please help me 19 viewers with no answer 20 nowBumping is BAD MANNERS. You can work out what to do. In manual duples we print all the odd* numbered pages 1,3,5,7... then turn the paper over and print all the even* pages 2,4,6,8... on the back. If all the pages are printed on one side and some are printed both sides, then you must have printed all the odd* pages then TURNED the stack of pages over and PUT them back in the paper tray and COMMENCED printing all the even* pages, then stopped. So what you must do is work out where you stopped, and in the printer dialog specify which pages to print. Suppose the last COMPLETE sheet had page 17 on the FRONT and page 18 on the back, then you would print pages 20,22,24,26,28, ...until the last page to print (enter it like that) * or the other way around! Solve : laptop cd drive? |

Answer» having trouble copying files to a CD from my laptop. Ony able to copy a few files when I should be able to copy much more, and sometimes the CD comes out a little scratched. Looks like I need a new CD drive. Anybody know the approximate cost?Laptop optical drives range between 60 to 100+ Bucks.BUT if indeed that is the basis of the problem i suggest BUYING an external. It will be much less expensive and portable between computers. Plus with a bit of research you can find one that is very small.truenorth P.S. Make it a dvd rw and you will be EVEN further ahead.I think we need more information. Quote having trouble copying files to a CD from my laptop. What KIND of CD? is it blank? Solve : Computer Won't Detct Hard Drive? |

Answer» HP Pavilion a1130n is the model. HP Pavilion a1130n is the model....That's a good sign, if you can get to the BIOS and boot a CD. If the hard drive can't be detected in the BIOS, it's probably dead. You tried another hard drive and it was detected? Then for sure the other one is dead.It wouldn't detect either HD >< Thanks for the response though =PYou tried different hard drives and none are detected? Is it IDE or SATA?Ahhh crap. um..... The hard drives themselves? They say SATA on them in like 5 spots, so I'm gonna go ahead and say that. Sorry.Could be the SATA cable is not making a good connection. Is that the plug that goes to the motherboard? If so, I tried one from one of our older computer sand it didn't work than, either ><. Idk. Thanks for the RESPONSES thou.Quote from: Puddings on April 26, 2010, 05:49:09 PM Is that the plug that goes to the motherboard? If so, I tried one from one of our older computer sand it didn't work than, either...Sometimes the connector to the hard drive is not TIGHT & the fingers lose contact. You'll have to look real carefully to detect it. You can push it to one side while you try to boot. Be careful you don't break it. DISSK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER Idk~ Tried messing wit hthe plugs, hasn't had any affect so far.. mm.. Thanks for your time though. If anyone has any ideas, throw them at meh :pDISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER Could this be a problem with the PSU? The computer still turns on and I can get to bios. The harddrives still works in another computer. Could it be that the PSU isn't working properly? >< or.... not really..? Thanks in advance. /e Nvm. Tried switching PSU and it didn't work =_=if suppose system may have been worked well yesterday, but today it will not function or hard disk deducted.so you have to follow my ways 1. just unplug all cables & power cables such as Hard disk, dvd cable etc then plug cable. 2.give another power connector to hard disk.even though power connecter is faill, the hard disk will not deducted. 3.keep your hand on hard disk after system turn on. if you feel some vibration from hard disk, hard disk is fine conditions. 4.when system turn on, there should not removable disk from any usb port. 5.give first priority to hard disk in bios settings and second should be cd rom/dvd rom |

Solve : Toshiba L505D GS6000 Resolution/Aspect Ratio Issue? |
|
Answer» I just bought a L505D GS6000 computer and am very satisfied. However their is one very annoying issue that KINDA makes me want my old A305-S6916 computer back. When playing any type of simulator game, such as a flight simulator the resolution/aspect ratio of the screen is always messed up. For example an object in the game such as an aircraft will look stretched when veiwed in the horizontal (facing left and right on screen), and look flattened/shortened whenever it's viewed in the vertical (Facing TOP to bottom of screen). I've tried every fix imaginable, changing aspect ratio and resolution, changing one or the other at a time (these two options only reverse or worsen the effect), and using ATI Catalyst control center, etc. but nothing seems to help. I'm not familiar with the ATI Mobility Radeon HD4200 graphics system, and it might just be a feature of this card. Anyway if ANYONE can help I'll take any suggestions. One more thing that might be the problem is that this game was made in 2006, so its somewhat dated however my old computer had a 16:9 screen obviously just like this one and it never had this problem. Also the reccomended resolution for the L505D GS6000 is 1366x768, I've never used this setting before, nor did I know it existed on any CURRENT computer. So I guess in the end my point is SINCE the game is old, could it not be capable of running with these modern features and settings. |

Performance is comparable to Win98. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304297 Quote from: Computer_Commando on May 31, 2010, 06:14:28 PM I can tell you from my direct experience that the Pentium II will run Windows 2000 & XP, assuming they have at least 128MB of RAM. Performance is comparable to Win98. 100% agree.Quote from: Computer_Commando on May 31, 2010, 06:14:28 PM I can tell you from my direct experience that the Pentium II will run Windows 2000 & XP, assuming they have at least 128MB of RAM. Performance is comparable to Win98. Okay, I myself have used windows XP on a AMD K-6 350Mhz (above XP's minimum of 233MHz without any service packs) with 352MB of RAM (64MB was the minimum back then). this was made up of 128+64+32 SD RAM, and I FOUND that yes it would work, and okay i could use notepad with sufficient speed but as soon as you introduced things like SP2, Anti-virus and higher versions of Firefox or I.E...things went down hill very quickly. After SP2, MS introduced things like the security center, and other background processes that use more ram, leading to higher PF usage on disk. Op would notice major amounts of disk thrashing and slowdowns. A PC I have at home with 1024MB RAM, and a 2.5GHz Celeron thrashes like anything on a fresh install of XP SP3 with just Avast! and an internet explorer window open, surfing the net. note the link I followed took me to the Windows 2000 page...XP's requirements are slightly higher. A pentium 2 hits the bottom of the barrel. i was there, i experienced it, it just plain sucks for browsing the web, Youtube video would lagg in FULLSCREEN at 800x600, as it used to on my P4 2.5GHz at 1280x1024, not that this is XP's fault, the processor still would be not fast enough under any OS. All I am saying is that Win 98 is a lot more responsive (in my experience) on slower hardware.I used a K6-2 @350Mhz with 96MB, then 128MB, and finally 512MB, running XP SP3 for a total of 5 years. It runs fine. Of course I was an over-optimizer, half of the SERVICES were disabled, I didn't use Luna until I got a new graphic card, and a few other things, but it was usable, and I could run a more programs then I ever could with win98. Win98 is more responsive- yes. But windows 95 is faster still, and windows 3.1 is even faster. you have to draw the line somewhere, and the majority of consumer applications are no longer runnable on windows 98 at all. Good luck trying to find a AV program that is still supported with updates, for example. The OP never went into detail about what programs he is using. If it's just email or simple web stuff his machine may have a few more years left. His computer specs are just above the minimum for XP. But as he indicates, it is slow and painful so something needs to change. Minimum requirements for XP (posted almost 3 years ago). http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314865/ Before he buys a new computer, he should spend about $40 on additional RAM and see what that does.Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 31, 2010, 07:33:48 PM I used a K6-2 @350Mhz with 96MB, then 128MB, and finally 512MB, running XP SP3 for a total of 5 years. It runs fine. Of course I was an over-optimizer, half of the services were disabled, I didn't use Luna until I got a new graphic card, and a few other things, but it was usable, and I could run a <lot> more programs then I ever could with win98. True, A decent AV would be hard to get on a win 98 machine. So yes while XP is useable, as you said you had lots of stuff cut out and not even using the Luna theming, It does really boil down to what the OP wants to do with it.Now it's time to be serious. Installing Windows 2000 would be the best choice for this machine. There are many useful programs out there that run very well on Windows 2000. Some excellent programs are available as free downloads off the Internet. But taking SEVERAL minutes to load Windows XP often indicates some kind of problem with either the hardware, drivers for the hardware, or a very AGGRESSIVE AV program. There's also the possibility that the disk drive is very near the end of life. Windows XP by itself does little in the way of hard drive diagnostics. You have to use one of the tools available from the manufacturers to run a diagnostic on the disc drive to see if it is acceptable. He can pick up a very good reconditioned hard drive for under $40. Memory for that old machine should be is cheap by now. It uses a memory stick that does not have the same pin configuration as the newer machines. Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 01, 2010, 11:00:10 AM Now it's time to be serious. Agreed! Windows 2k still has the same interface, but without the bloated luna theme, it still has the same utility and useability of XP and runs on slower hardware. For XP to take a few minutes on that machine from boot up sounds reasonable if he has a small amount of RAM. I ran XP on 64MB of RAM once, just to test, and it was unbearable! On a side note...this is pretty cool! http://winhistory.de/more/386/xpmini_eng.htm |

Solve : External to Internal Hard Drive? |

Answer» Has anyone ever opened up a External Hard Drive and installed it as a Internal Drive? I ASK because my computer (HP s3700f) dosen't have the space for a second hard drive and I'l like to replace the 320 Gig with a 1.5 Tb I have. Has anyone ever opened up a External Hard Drive and installed it as a Internal Drive? I ask because my computer (HP s3700f) dosen't have the space for a second hard drive and I'l like to replace the 320 Gig with a 1.5 Tb I have. So your computer is a slimline as you indicated. I thought the hard drive would be smaller than normal size hard drive. Is your external HD the same dimensions as the HD in the slimline? Just asking? Something to consider.Quote from: IowaMrs on December 21, 2011, 01:45:05 PM I thought the hard drive would be smaller than normal size hard drive. Is your external HD the same dimensions as the HD in the slimline? Just asking? Something to consider. All you need to do is Google the model number. Quote HP Pavilion Slimline s3700f I wasn't worried so much about the Sata/IDE connector in my computer. I was more CONCERNED about the HD in the case being just a normal Sata Drive. If that's the case, then I can just swap it. Opened it up and everything's normal. I guess I was concerened that the HD in a external case would be different. The case opened up so easy that now I have it as a backup if I want to GO back to external. Thanks for the replys everyone johnQuote from: Jahness on December 21, 2011, 02:53:50 PM I guess I was concerned that the HD in a external case would be different. They are just normal hard drives. You can buy empty enclosures and fit spare hard drives into them. Smaller external HDDs use laptop size (2.5 inch) hard drives. |

I restarted my pc and the mouse started working. The next day the same problem. While working, mouse stopped. Then for two or three days the mouse worked around 5 or 10 min when i turned my pc on but then stopped and i had to use the keyboard. I went to Control Panel, mouse properties, hardware and it was nothing in the "Devices". I tried my mouse at my neighbour's pc and it worked and the red light is still turned on. Solve : New laptop hard drive noise and vibration issues? |
|
Answer» HEY guys, I bought a 250GB WD HD to replace the original 80GB Hitachi HD in my laptop. I have an external enclosure I INTENDED to put the original laptop HD in. The new HD is a 7200 rpm drive with 16MB cache/buffer. It makes a noticeable constant hum noise and also makes a vibration which is noticeable whenever I touch the laptop on the left side where the HD is located. I thought I'd try a 7200 as a way to not only get more space but also get a performance advantage over 5400 rpm drives, but this noise and vibration is a source of dissatisfaction. If 7200 rpm drives are going to be problematic this way, I'd rather stick with 5400 rpm drives in a laptop. This drive have a very solid overall review rating on newegg.com, although some reviews did mention noise and vibration. I'm leaning toward returning it while that's still an option. The drive is this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136279. Any of you been down this road with a laptop HD? What would you do? I'd expect the Caviar Black drives to be a little noisy, certainly noisier than an older 5400rpm drive. I'm unsure if it's normal or not for that model, I know the desktop Black drives are pretty noisy. I have the Blue (5400rpm) version of that drive in a media PC and it's all but inaudible, I know that has very little relevance though. I also have a 7200rpm drive in my laptop, which is an older IDE Hitachi Travelstar drive, again that's all but inaudible and I'm fairly particular about noise. If it was me, I'd return the drive for replacement and see if it was perhaps just an oddball/slightly faulty drive that was rather noisy, and if the ISSUE persisted with a replacement I'd get a refund. I don't however know Newegg's policy on returns so I'm not sure if that is a viable option for you, or indeed if you'd be willing to go through that process. Hope this RAMBLING helps somewhat Quote If it was me, I'd return the drive for replacement and see if it was perhaps just an oddball/slightly faulty drive that was rather noisy ...Thanks for the reply, Calum. I was thinking along that line since. I believe I'll be given 2 options (refund or replacement) when I initiate the "RMA", i.e. the return, procedure ONLINE. And, yes, as far as I know, I could request replacement and then, if that one had the same issues, I could return it. The buyer pays the shipping cost of returning an item. I think I will definitely return it but I think I need to mull this over a bit before deciding whether to go for a refund and then get a different HD or request replacement and give this model another try.Just food for thought Soybean but i have a Caviar Black in my machine right now...and put 2 of them into a Customers machine about 2 weeks ago... I don't find them to be noisy at all...so it may very well be the drive itself. |

Answer» I have phillips desktop speakers with a sub. The speakers lead GOES into the speakers out PORT in the sub and the there is a remote control which plugs into the green port in the computer.
Actually, this might not be why the sound is quiet- the reason you can hardly hear it is because the remote control hosted the amplifier. As you've learned, speakers are rather USELESS without an amplifier. |

Solve : System requirements to play a DVD question? |
|
Answer» What system requirements does a computer have to have to play a DVD effectively? I have XP on several computers and can play DVD's fine on 2 of them. The other 2 I have are only 300MHZ. I'm thinking this is the issue I have with herky jerky playback. is it when the image pans from one side to the other, it looks a bit jerky, like a couple of frames are missing here and there? No...kind of like plip, plip, plip, plip for sound. When you hear sound it's not smooth. Kind of like when a person speaks thru a microphone and there is a BREAK in the sound and you hear sound than silence and then sound and silence but it's really fast not smooth.300 MHz is the absolute minimum speed for playing a DVD. Faster is HIGHLY recommended. I'd also guess those machines don't have much RAM or a very strong video card. Adding some more RAM might help a little, but I'd just stick to playing DVDs on the faster machines.Quote from: rthompson80819 on April 30, 2010, 04:25:27 PM 300 MHz is the absolute minimum speed for playing a DVD. I used speakers from a known good system and the speakers sound is decent, however when I use the speakers in the computer that I am working on the sound is very crappy, like they are ready to blow up as soon as I try to turn the volumn up. Any ideas? There is a **Creative Advanced Wave Effects Synthesis for AWE32 Plug and Play (WDM) and a Creative Sound Blaster 16 Plug and Play (WDM) according to the Belarc Advisor profile on the computer with the horrible sound. This is a Pentium II 300MHZ with 416 usable installed memory and on the computer with the great sound and same speakers there is a Creative Audio PCI (ES1371, ES 1373) (WDM) and Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device. This has a Pentium III 1000MHZ with 416 usable installed memory. I just installed the trial version of Cyberlink PowerDVD 7 on both computers and according to the read me file I may have to update drivers. What do you think? you can try updating the drivers, if there are any for it to SEE if there's any improvement. I'd make a system restore point first before installing the drivers, in case something goes wrong and you need to get back to point zero again. I'm wondering if you could swap the sound card from the good pc to the one you're having sound problems with? Wondering if it may be that the card is giving problems?Quote from: 2x3i5x on April 30, 2010, 11:12:46 PM you can try updating the drivers, if there are any for it to see if there's any improvement. I'd make a system restore point first before installing the drivers, in case something goes wrong and you need to get back to point zero again. I'll give both ideas a try. It's worth a try anyway. If it is a sound card issue can you suggest a decent sound card? |

Solve : Green pixles and crash =(? |
|
Answer» I have been having some issues recently with my computer. At times my screen will have short green lines across it and the computer stops. It is not a full crash however, i can still here sounds on the computer but they are broken and choppy. The mouse works... but the rest of the screen is frozen. The computer is simply nonreactive. the lights on the keyboard freeze. pressing caps LOCK or numb lock do not change the lights. i suspect my motherboard is going but i haven't encountered this before so i do not know. Is this a hardware issue? Have you tried booting into safe mode? What happens then? It is ok.. what do you recommend? try DL'ing new Bios? vid card drivers? But, then again the Safe mode requires less video power. who is right here?Have you tried the simple things? connections, boards and chips seated etc? Take a LOOK at the 'events viewer' in 'administrative tools > computer management. There you can take a look at your recent history by date and time for warnings and failures. Look for a 'trend' that will give a clue to the FAILURE and report back. I've never heard of booting into safe mode causing any problems so it's the first thing you should try and see what happens. Downloading a new BIOS is too drastic a step to do at this time. My feeling also is that it your video card, but you need to take trouble shooting one step at a time.ok well thatk you all0 for the help. ill try these suggestions and see what happens. |

Solve : Hard Disk Wont Start? |
|
Answer» I was working on my computer last night and therwe was power failure.. I removed the hard disk and tried to boot from cd room and it worked...that mean something is wrong with HD That doesn't necessarily mean that the hard drive is bad. Your power supply MIGHT be failing. REMOVING a device reserves power for other components.. What's the make/model of your hard drive ? You could download hard drive diagnostics software and burn it to a bootable CD, and test the drive.. If you have access to another power supply of equal or greater wattage, you should install it and try it out... Another way to go would be to install the drive into another computer, as a secondary drive. This would tell you almost immediately if the drive is bad. If the computer doesn't recognize it either way you try it, chances are it's gone bad. Depending on how bad you need your data, you might have to pay an data recovery expert, if you haven't backed up anything... It's Seagate ST380011A(80 GB) I have another Computer and I tried I have another PC and when I connect this hard disk on it the HD is detected but that PC won't start up either . You cannot move it to another machine and expect it to boot properly...this is by design. You can however connect it as a slave and retrieve your important data... After that you could return it to the 1st machine and try a Repair Install... But i'd grab the data 1st.The problem is when I connect it with the other PC even that PC doesn't start It's likely that your not hooking up the drive correctly... According to the MFR, in order to slave the drive, you need to remove the jumpers and connect it like this: motherboard===========slave drive=======primary drive Then make sure that the boot order in the bios is set to boot form the primary drive.. If it boots up, navigate to the drive under Windows and copy your data to a thumb drive or other external device.. Select F1, F2 or delete to enter the bios at boot time... If the drive isn't even recognized in the bios, it's likely that the drive is dead.. Be sure the jumper on back of the primary drive (in the good computer) is set as "master", when you do this..I got my data back Thanks a tonnnn ! Now anyone? How to make this HD work ? I want it back on my pc... it wont let me install windows =SCongrats Put the drive back into the original computer in the exact configuration it was in before. Pull off all the power cables and replace them exactly the way they were. Try booting off the installation disc to do a repair install. If it still doesn't work, take the power supply out of the good computer and put it in the bad one and see if you can get the installation to work... Make sure the computer is clean inside, as well....no dust Use compressed air if you have some Hmmm.. the PC started working automatically back then and now another light jolt and it's in the same pathetic condition again... I need a new HD or a new pc ? |

Solve : Dropped Laptop Cant get past Window Error Recovery Screen? |
|
Answer» Hi I have a Dell1720 that was on when I closed the lid and layed down my COFFEE table a BIT to hard I guess, when I opened it back up it was frozed so I held in the power button in to restart. It begins START-up and manages to make it to the Windows Error Recovery screen with 2 options normal start-up and Start-up Repair but both will just return me to the same screen. I figure its my HD but didn't know if it can be SAVE or at least maybe my data. BTW F2 and F12 boot still work on start-up. I tried to start up in safe mode but it just takes me to the same Error screen. Its Vista OS btwQuote when I closed the lid and layed down my coffee table a bit to hard I guessCan you explain what happened in more detail? If it's the hard drive and you have no recovery disc (CD or DVD), you can probably order one at a fairly low cost from Dell so that you could install Windows on a new hard drive. Of course, this still won't recover files from your old drive; you may be out of luck there. Im trying to say that my laptop got bumped pretty good when I layed it down on the coffee table as in POW, BodySlam, and BOOM1 option: Grab one of these... 2.5" Laptop to IDE converter...'bout 8 bucks. This will enable you to hook up the drive to a working Desktop machine to retrieve your data...providing the drive still works...ok Im gettin ready to order a new drive now so in your opinion should i even mess with trying to run in of the options in the boots screenit sounds like the drive is still spinning without any bad sounding noisesQuote from: patio on May 01, 2010, 11:41:15 AM 1 option:is this the right one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812119245&cm_re=IDE_converter-_-12-119-245-_-ProductOther than acting in the manner that Patio has suggested (this to enable --maybe--the recovery of the data on your HDD) i believe you to be acting prematurely to be ordering replacement parts until you have a better idea (knowledge) of exactly what is the problem.truenorth |

Solve : Computer Sleeping? |

It goes to sleep anywhere from a range of 5 minutes to an hour and it happens without me shutting the lid. Help!!Go to start button >control panel>Power options>CHANGE when computer sleeps. Solve : Need help choosing new monitor!!? |
|
Answer» I would like to upgrade to a larger monitor for my computer but have no idea how to go about it. I currently am using a 17" ViewSonic Flat Panel Monitor (LCD Display), 1280x1024 black, Model #VA712b with 8ms Video Responce! I have NEVER purchased a monitor before and need as much help as I can get to make it easier. There's nothing wrong with my 17" but I'd really like a 19" or even a 20" just to make it easier on my eyes. I use my computer for email and I also watch DVDs on my DVD player and play music on the CD player. So I don't want a monitor that is too large to read my emails but one that would make watching my DVDs a larger, more enjoyable experience. Here are my system REQUIREMENTS: I use Windows XP Pro SP3, Intel PENTIUM 3, 27 gb hard drive, 384 mb RAM, Video card is a ATI Radeon 7200 with 64mb RAM, Sound Blaster audio, DVD-Rom, CD burner, 10/100 network card, and US Robotics v90 56k modem. Sorry if this is too much info but I feel it's better than leaving something out. I would greatly appreciate all advice on what kind of monitor I should LOOK for because there are so many different kinds on the market and I don't want to make a mistake. |

Sometimes when I post a suggested fix for someone and BC is looking at the THREAD afterward, I wonder if I will pass the test. (you may be good, but can you pass the BC test) I'll have to ask the in-laws what they want to do. I'll also have to compare the price of a new HDD as to the cost of SpinRite (first time purchasers = $89).Quote magnets don't affect hard drives.Just ignore that remark.Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 10, 2010, 07:50:36 PM Just ignore that remark. Go ahead, try it. take a magnet, run it over a hard drive. Nothing happens. Agreed, You would NEED an electro-magnet or a rare earth magnet to affect the contents of a HDD....Quote from: Puter Moron on April 10, 2010, 07:05:07 PM I'll have to ask the in-laws what they want to do. I'll also have to compare the price of a new HDD as to the cost of SpinRite (first time purchasers = $89).I didn't say it was free; I have a copy licensed to me. When it was first released, drives were much more expensive. It's now more useful to repair a drive that is not backed-up for some reason, i.e. process control devices. Newegg lists 9 ATA laptop drives, an 80GB is $50, a 120GB is $55; 250GB is $90, 320GB is $95. Get a 5400rpm, not a 4200rpm.I figured SpinRite would need to be purchased. I was just HOPING it would be cheaper to go the SpinRite way as opposed to getting a new HDD. Thanks for searching on Newegg. Any manufacturer that would be better than others? Quote from: Puter Moron on April 11, 2010, 06:04:42 PM ...Any manufacturer that would be better than others?Any of them are good. Samsung is relatively new to the hard drive market. Hitachi bought the drive business from IBM. I do not favor Maxtor. Look for the best warranty. http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287#samsung Quote from: patio on April 11, 2010, 10:16:04 AM Agreed, Are we talking about running a magnet directly across the hard drive platters, or merely setting a magnet on top of the protective casing ?Quote from: EEVIAC on April 12, 2010, 09:34:14 AM Are we talking about running a magnet directly across the hard drive platters, or merely setting a magnet on top of the protective casing ? Since running a magnet across the platters directly would entail disassembly of the drive and therefore make the drive pretty much completely unreliable it stands to reason how such a method would be a good way of wiping a drive that one intended to use. Yes though, I am referring to the platters themselves. you would need a very powerful magnet- one at least as powerful as the one that set the particles polarity- (the write head) to scramble or change the ordering of the particles enough so they may not be properly read. perhaps if you leave a strong magnet sitting on the top of a hard drive for 8 to 10 hours you may find some slight file system issues that chkdsk can still resolve but aside from that you aren't going to be wiping a drive with a magnet at all.Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 12, 2010, 11:32:50 AM Since running a magnet across the platters directly would entail disassembly of the drive and therefore make the drive pretty much completely unreliable it stands to reason how such a method would be a good way of wiping a drive that one intended to use. I believe it's relative. Some drives, from what I gather will still work after the protective casing is removed, although I wouldn't consider the drive "reliable" at that point. As you know, even a drive protected by the case can still go bad, but is more reliable than one that's not covered. All drives fail at some point..Quote from: EEVIAC on April 13, 2010, 12:46:30 AM I believe it's relative. Some drives, from what I gather will still work after the protective casing is removed I know.... I've taken them apart before and used them, and they worked fine. I wouldn't consider them "reliable" simply because a tiny speck of dust or air currents in the outer air can CAUSE a catastrophic head crash.I've tried to take one apart before, but I didn't have the right type of screw driver and I stripped the heads on some of the screws.. I ended up using a pair of needle-nose pliers to bend the plate back and forth until it broke off, and I could access the inner goods.. Sorry, I thought I had thanked everyone for the help but I obviously did not. Thanks for the help. |

Solve : No connection to monitor (Already checked your thread about it)? |
|
Answer» So, 2 days ago, my girlfriend and I moved into our own apartment. The night before we moved, I was using my computer and everything was fine. The next day, I took it all down and packed it up like I've done many times before. I put the TOWER on the floor of the back seat of my car. Last night, I attempted to set everything up in the new place, but I wasn't getting a picture on my monitor; the light was staying orange. I put the tower on the floor of the back seat of my car. If you put the "tower" (system unit) on the floor of the car with no padding or shock protection, or even on a seat (your post is not clear which) it is possible that something got jolted or shaken loose, so I would very thoroughly carefully and gently examine the inside of the unit to see if anything is even slightly unplugged or unseated, in particular the RAM. Now you know why assembled computers are shipped in large boxes with plenty of polystyrene surrounding them. Yeah, everything is connected PROPERLY. My computer is almost 6 years old, so I guess its played it course.Quote from: ryan.strain on December 24, 2011, 11:52:52 AM Yeah, everything is connected properly. My computer is almost 6 years old, so I guess its played it course. They weren't cheap, $1913 (without monitor) in September 2006 according to PC Review. You can buy a new Dimension 9200/XPS 410 motherboard for $80 but if you are getting keen on buying a new system, don't let me stand in your way! |

Answer» Dell Studio XPS 435MT i7-920 6GB VISTA 64bit Dell Studio XPS 435MT i7-920 6GB Vista 64bit If your computer is relatively new I would go straight to the source. Especially if it is still under warranty. http://support.dell.com/support/index.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhsSomething very similar just started happening to me, except my computer is not new and I haven't made any recent changes to either hardware or software. It seems like a hardware issue, and at first I thought it was a problem with my graphics card. But the other day it happened while I was listening to music, and I don't know how else to describe it other than to say that the exact same thing happened to the audio that happened to the graphics: slow DETERIORATION until the POINT of everything stopping. It's really bizarre and I don't even know how to go about trouble shooting. I've done virus scans, malware scans, registry scans, but nothing. This thread is the only thing I've come across that sounds ANYTHING like what I'm experiencing. |
