Solve : New Motherboard, sound only comes out of center and read right...HELP?

Answer»

Hey all i just GOT a new Computer, i got a foxconn p35 mars motherboard and a Q6600 Quad core. Everything works great the AUDIO is on board.

So i have 5.1 speakers and i plugged green to green. orange to orange, etc.

when i plug everything into the back i get sound out of center and sub. And out of the rear right. But thats it, i get no sound out of the front left or right or rear left.

I know the speakers are fine because i plug into the headphone jack with the green plug and they all work fine.

I have done a bios update, re-done the drivers from 2 different places twice. and tried every other plug i can even think of.

I checked all windows settings i know of with volume control and other things, but i jsut cant get it to go. Please help me if anyone has any ideas.

Forgot to mention i have windows vista UltimateHave you tried adjusting the speaker setup? (2.0/2.1, 4.0/4.1, 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, Headphones)

COULD be a number of things from a BAD chipset to bad jacks.

Most programs have settings for adjusting the speaker output. Try the other modes and see if it's still causing PROBLEMS. If it is, the on-board sound chipset or the jacks might be bad (it happens) and I'd return that board.

Is the driver you're using specifically designed for Vista or is it an XP driver?yea i tried adjusting to 5.1

the driver is designed for vista, and when you say other modes do you mean like trying 2.1 and 4.1? if so i tried that also to no availThen the jacks are probably bad. I'd take it back.

Solve : Problem with AMD athlon processor?

Answer»

Hi all,
I have faced a problem in my computer, that i was seeing the pieces of the computer.
When I REACHED to the CPU I removed the fan, and i noticed that the CPU is welded with the main board.

then I closed the case after INSTALLATION the fan again, and I turned on the PC.
When it reachs before the welcome screen of windows XP SP2, it restarts, and i couldn't login windows since that.

I hope I FIND a solution,
Best Regards.did you remove the fan on top of the heatsink or the whole heatsink its self?I removed the fan after i turned off the PC directly, and INSTALLED it after about 30 seconds of removing. Is the fan spining? Some pc's shut down if the cpu overheats. No the fan is spinning very well and it is cleanYou'll have to forgive me but I don't fully understand the issue. From the sounds of it the issue is that you're not able to get into Windows. If that is the case have you tried booting the computer into Safe Mode?

Solve : Computer will not boot?

Answer»

The memory was taken out and put back in a notebook and now the computer will not boot at all. You turn it on and hear nothing then it shuts itself off. I think the computer may have been turned on when the memory was taken out and it was plugged in. Any clue as to what could have HAPPENED? i'd take the ram out again, check the ports, clean it, make sure the ram is the same voltage/type, and then make sure you plug it all back in rightThanks for your help. We have taken it in and out several times to no avail. I was getting ready to buy some more memory and hubby took the memory out of his notebook to be sure of what kind to get. Our son left the computer on but had the lid closed and hubby didn't know that so we think the computer was on when he took the memory out. We are thinking it fried something. Motherboard, memory who knows. You turn it on and nothing. No SOUND nothing on the screen and then shuts down in less than a minute. But thank you I will clean everything and try again.Since it is a laptop and there's a chance the RAM was removed with power to the machine unfortunately you may be looking at a service call...
Is it still under warranty by any chance ? ?

Another thing you can try but i promise no success would be to unplug both the main power and remove the battery overnite. Do not replace the RAM or battery in the morning.
Plug it in and power it up and SEE if it beeps.
If so power down...unplug it and replace the RAM. Wait 5 or 10 minutes and plug it back in and power up...you may get lucky. Thanks for the tips. Thankfully it is a company computer so it would just be given to them to fix. We just wanted to fix it if we could. (Nobody is allowed on my computer.) lol I'll try your tips tonight. Again Thanks!Have you tried rebooting it from the original Boot disk or in the 'safe' MODE?DrBehavior please remember to read the thread before MAKING suggestions... how is the user going to boot in safe mode when the computer can't boot at all?

Solve : Downloading Information?

Answer»

Hey Everyone

I need help to figure out how I download information from my COMPUTOR to my SATELITE RECEIVER. I have a cable that hooks into the back of the receiver. It has the same type of end as a monitor. The other end is identicle. However I don't have any extra hook ups on the back of my computor. The only one is the monitor. Can you help me.

Thanks
PuttsUhhh what?
What do you need to "download" from your computer to your SATELLITE receiver?I think what he means is he is trying to update the "fta" file as I recall on the sattelite. You have to do it through a USB cord or a USB Flash, other than that I don't think you're allowed to discuss this operation in this forum.

Solve : Recording Sound Help!!!?

Answer»

Ok so i have a 3 day old Dell Inspiron 1501, 2 gigs of ram, AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-55 1.80GHz, SigmaTel High DEFINITION Audio CODEC Speakers/Headphones, and i'm trying to use Camtasia Studio to record my screen, and record the audio that COMES out of my speakers, but the option for the recording speakers is unselectable, and i have no idea why. I have TRIED everything i can think of. I'm making a tutorial for my friends on how to animate with Hudini Master 8, but i'm can't record the sound for some reason. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :]double click audio icon on bottom right hand side of monitor > select options > select properties > select recording > under "Show the following volume controls:" is there an option called "What U Hear"?

i dont believe "What U Hear" is supported by all sound CARDS. you may need to PURCHASE a new sound card if that option is not present. if you do not wish to purchase a new sound card, you may be able to add audio after you are finished making the video.

Solve : Problem with Video Card - PX8500GT?

Answer»

I need some help please. I replaced an ATI 158 MB card in a Dell GX620 (Pent(R) D 2.8 GH, 2 GIG Ram, DX9, Win XP SP2) with the Leadtek PX8500GT (256 MB). I removed all old drivers for ATI, downloaded latest drivers, and the installation went normally. It passes all direct x tests and DVD video and normal windows LOOKS fine....but when I try to play games with motion (even old games that barely have any serious 3D requirements) the card struggles. The motion is jerky and graphics are blotchy. Everything is at default settings. ATI card worked fine and was quite smooth. Big thanks for a suggestion. If your motherboard has an INTEGRATED GPU, even though you are adding the video card shut it off in the bios config, so that it is truely off.

Being that it is a better 8500GT you dont have to deal with the shared Ram issue that was snuck in under many consumers radar with the 7300 GS. I had a 7300 GS given to me for free because a friend bought it and it eats up 256MB system Ram and adds it to its 256 onboard to make 512MB Video. Not Very Efficient, and a cheap way to squeeze in an extra 256MB Ram and mislead consumers into believing that their card is a 512MB Card, when its really a 512MB that is a 256 grabbing an additional 256 from system Ram... And how is this betetr than integrated Video when you are sharing System Ram for Video.... Unfortunately it does run better than integrated, but not a sgood as stand alone dedicated GPU Ram.Was this card new ? ?
Can you test it on another machine to make sure the card is good ?Hey, thanks for your answers! I'm getting more confused....not good.

On the box - this brand new card - the card is supposed to be 256MB, which is what I thought I was buying. But if I go into Display properties/adapter it says the following:

Chip GeForce 8500GT
DAC Integrated RAMDAC
Memory size: 512 MB*
Bios Version 60.86.39.00.68

* but on booting the computer the video RAM is listed as 256MB.

So do I have one of those cards that shares RAM? My system has 2 GB of RAM so I'm not sure why that WOULD be messing it up? So far I can't see how to turn off that property.

I got this "upgrade" (no read that downgrade!) just to be able to run a model airplane flight sim....the min requirements are DX9 and 256 MB on board RAM. When the plane flies just across a clear sky there is no hesitation or jerkiness in the control of the plane, but as soon as any stationary background scenery comes into view the motion is very negatively affected. With the old ATI 128MB card the plane flies smoothly in all conditions, but the detail is rather lacking, and edges are quit ragged.

Unfortunately I don't have another computer I can check the card in....My requirements for a card are/were PCI express, 256MB on board, DX9, and low raise form factor. This last requirement has greatly limited my selections...

I'm going to try updating the MB bios...

Any other ideas?

Solve : Games crash?

Answer»

Hello all,

When I play certain games (Civilization IV, Need For Speed: Carbon) after around 15 minutes the game will crash, taking the entire computer with it. The sound will still be working, but the monitors will be in standby, and a few seconds later, the whole thing locks up.

I am using an HIS ATi Radeon X1950Pro (256mb PCI-E) graphics card with the latest Omega drivers. Tried reinstalling them, didn't help. Temperatures are fine, hardly get above 55.

Other games (Half-Life 2, America's Army) do not suffer from crashes.

The crashes are random but happen after SIMILAR periods of time. There is no warning before they happen, the game just dies.

Here are more entire specs:

AMD Opteron 175
2gb RAM (assorted BRANDS)
430w PSU (SLI-certified)

So what is wrong? What should I do?Try ATI's official Catalyst drivers instead of using third PARTY drivers. Omega drivers aren't exactly PERFECT and don't always work for everyone.

Anyway, trying ATI's Catalyst drivers should tell you if it's a driver problem.I tried the Cats. Same problem.what are you using to determine the GPU temperature? is 55 the max idle temp or load temp?Load temp. I have it tracked with ATi Tray Tools.Man I gotta say this is the most complete question I've ever read on this forum. Everything is mentioned starting from specs. to games and temperature, I wish all posts were like this. Good job. Do you play America's Army on full video settings with that video card? It's possible that something is running in the background that's causing your grief.

1. Click Start, Run and type: msconfig and press enter.
2. In the System Configuration Utility click the Startup tab.
3. Uncheck all startup programs. Once done click ok and restart the computer. After the computer boots back into Windows you will receive a prompt about Windows being in a selective startup. Check the box to not receive the prompt and click ok.

Try playing the games again.

Thanks,
Yes I run it on full specs. Sometimes the card has troubles, but it never breaks like other games.

I'm absolutely positive that the GPU temperature is not a problem. Other games load it up just as much (Half-Life 2) and do not crash. The cooler on it is an IceQ 3. Last time I was playing around with the crash right before the monitors turned off the VPU temperature was 57. (I also checked the CPU temp: 58)

I'm getting fairly certain that this is a PSU issue - I ordered a new one (I need one anyways)

I ran Memtest86+ the other night and there were no errors.

Also, the games no longer crash. The monitors turn off (which means the video card is not working) but everything works fine (I can hear the in game sounds) and I can even minimize and get Windows to make warning noises by stabbing buttons. So it's definitely something related to the video card, and I think it's power consumption.Good thinking. After your additional comment and observations mentioned above I'd also agree that a PSU could be a likely culprit. While inside the computer you may also want reseat the video card to make sure it's not a bad connection between the video card and motherboard. Additionally ALTHOUGH you indicated that the temperature is ok, may also want to verify GPU fan is ok and spinning. The exhaust port on the second slot of the video card has air moving out of it, so the fan is working.

I just had the error when I was not playing the game. Windows was logging in my account, and then the monitors turned off.

I should check if the fan is spinning when the monitors turn off. That would immediately tell me the problem.

Solve : Something wierd with windows vista....any reason??

Answer»

Sorry if wrong place to post. I don't really know where this should go.

When I boot up computer, I see a some MS-DOS type text, and something appearing to be detecting my graphics CARD. I assumed that once I load computer, I shold see nothing except that little loading BAR with the microsoft corporation text. Maybe there is a problem with the installation of vista ?!!!What I have during startup is this.
Compaq logo shows up. Bluish (LCD) screen for a moment, then Vista logo in the middle of the screen, and then my desktop loads.i was TOLD that MS-DOS type screen should never load (or at least, should be not viewable) upon booting to WINDOWS unless you were booting into safe mode with MS-DOS or something like that. It's been like this for a while? How OLD is your Vista? New computer? Upgrade?

Solve : Firmware Update?

Answer»

Where can I find updates for my maxtor firmware? 300 GB DiamondMax MODEL # 6B300SO Serial # B603FP5H Code BANC1870 K,G,B,A Why would you want to risk ruining a perfectly good HDD ? ?I was told by the maxtor company that it needed updateing and I didn't get it in my e-mail. Most hardware manufacturers (including Seagate who now owns the rights to Maxtor) do not MAKE firmware updates available on their website because of the potential hazards that can be encountered during the update.

If Maxtor (Seagate) has SUGGESTED a firmware update I'd suggest contacting them again letting them know you didn't get it.Okay, just wondered if I couldn't get it any wereI talked w/ seagate and they said there were no updates for the drive, said that I should get the drive REPLACE, swith it to make it a d drive or get powermax. Any suggestions? You mean suggestions other than the ones offered by Seagate? No, go with one of the options suggested by Seagate. Personally I would get the drive replaced. So your saing that it could fail as a slave.I honestly don't know. But the drive have some kind of defect if it can't function as a master and I personally wouldn't trust it then. If it's brand new then take advantage of your warranty and get a fully functional drive.Unfortunely its not I got it refurbished. I'm going to see if the problem still doesn't occur and if it does, I'm going to get a 320 gb to replace it.

Solve : does using DVI connection actually make significant difference??

Answer»

I bought a BFG 8500GT with 256mb memory to replace my old ATI xpress200 series card. 8500GT ain't the best card, but considering I got it from newegg at $79.99 and there is free shipping and $40 rebate to make it $40 FINAL COST makes it a steal.

My question now: usng the DVI port on the card connected to the DVI port on my LCD monitor using DVI to DVI cable make any significant DIFFERENCE in the graphics as compared to simply using VGA to VGA?apparently it does make a difference, whether or not its noticeable is another question.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVI
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA

Yes. It does. When I got my LCD, I didn't know, DVI cable was not included, so I used VGA cable for couple of days, then I got DVI, and there is a difference.Ok, I realize that DVI is digital and VGA is analog. SIMILAR to TV. Digital TV obviously better than analog.

Now, how about if you connected DVI to VGA using a DVI to VGA connector? Or would it be better to connect DVI to DVI directly using a DVI to DVI cable ?Using any adapter will KILL a bit of signal/quality.
I know, that cable is *censored* expensive, but it's worth it.

Solve : Questions about Memory and Motherboard?

Answer»

Hey guys,
I want my computer to run with 2 NVIDIA graphic cards and 4 gigs of ram. And I have a few questions for you.

My current system spec is :
AMD Athlon x2 6000+
2 gigs of 667MHz DDR2
nVIDIA Geforce 8500 GT

Here are my questions :
1. Is there a huge difference between 667MHz DDR2 and 800MHz DDR2?
2. Can I run 2 times 1 gig of 667MHz DDR2 and 2 times 1 gig of 800MHz DDR2?
-> If I do so, will the 800MHz DDR2 be slowed down to 667MHz DDR2?
3. Is 2 times 2 gigs better than 4 times 4 gigs?
4. Is it me or the only difference between MSI K9N4 and Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe Wireless Edition NVIDIA Socket AM2 ATX Motherboard is 130$?

Thanks for you answers!

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2882686&body=REBATES (2 times)

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2224204&CatId=2050 (the asus card I am talking about)1. There is a difference, however whether it is noticeable is debatable. it is clear in benchmarks, but in normal use it is doubtful you'll see much of a difference.
2. Yes, and yes.
3. I would prefer 2x2Gb, because it leaves more room for expansion later on. It should also be slightly faster, but again not noticeably.
4. Looks to me like they're pretty similar, however the Asus has built-in wireless networking.

My advice would be to buy a better video card instead of running SLI with two 8500GT's - the next card up, the 8600GT, is only slightly worse than two 8500GT cards.Well, my 8500 GT sucks, my goal was to wait until the 9 serie is out and buy a 8800 and run it SLI with my 8500, then when the 10 serie comes out i'll buy a 9800 etc... I will be 1 year behind everyone but I EXPECT the SLI to be very good. I THINK I can save some money by being 1 year behind the new card and still have some bloody good FPS. What do you think about this build?SLI requires two of the same card . . . so an 8500 and 8800 won't work.
You can save some serious CASH by waiting for a new series and then buying a good card from the older one, right now many people buy the older X1950 series at a good price, with better performance than the 8600GT for less.
Your build isn't too bad, but I'd prefer an Intel CPU myself - more overclocking headroom, and better performance.
However, a CPU and mobo swap can be pretty expensive, so there's not much point doing that before your video card, as that's the limiting factor in your system.Alright, thanks for you answers, I guess I will wait a bit and buy a 8800 and 2 times 2 gigs of ram. For the CPU, I just bought it, and I don't really feel like upgrading it right now, as you just said there is no point upgrading it before my poor graphic card.

Thanks for your advice again!Quote from: endorphine on January 04, 2008, 01:25:45 PM

Alright, thanks for you answers, I guess I will wait a bit and buy a 8800 and 2 times 2 gigs of ram.
Just FYI... in order to get full use out of 4 gb of ram you will need to run 64 bit XP or Vista. Any 32 bit Windows OS will only be able to utilize roughly 3 gb of ram.

Wow, this forum is awsome.. fast answer and people are great!
Eh well, as you can see I'm a complete noob in hardware (that's why I ask... )

Thanks for your answer

Well, if I buy 2 times 2g xp will use about 3g out of 4. And by buying 2 times 4G @ 800 mhz I'm almost sure that when I upgrade my hardware (or switch to vista) those 4g will still be very good.

Right?Yeah 4 gigs of ram should be plenty for quite some time. But just to clarify my previous answer, you will need a 64 bit version of Vista to see the full 4 gigs. 32 bit Vista got the same limitation as 32 bit XP.

Thanks I will read that.
I just saw something on my board specification : PCI Express x16 slot in this board runs in x8 mode. Does it mean that I can't get full power of a 8800 running on a x16 slot?
The second thing I'm worried about is this specification : Maximum Memory Supported: 2GB & 16GB - 64bit.
Even if the specification says that the maximum memory on a 32 bit is 2gigs, if I put 4 gigs on XP it will use 3 gigs.. right?

I swear I'll come here before buying anything next time... My motherboard

And the memory I'm considering to buyYour PCI-E slot runs at half speed, which may limit high end video cards.
But in most cases you shouldn't see a major difference, there's nothing you can do about it anyway now.
If the motherboard specification says that the board can only use 2Gb of RAM under a 32 bit OS, then I'd be inclined to believe it.
But, do you really need more than 2Gb of RAM?
If so, you'll need a 64 bit OS.Quote from: Calum on January 05, 2008, 05:40:49 AM

Thanks again guys, probly my last question (you must be tired )You could buy a different socket AM2 motherboard, and keep the same CPU, as long as the other motherboard supports your RAM and your other components.

Solve : HD Migration P2 to P4 CPU Windows 2000 Pro SP4?

Answer»

Ok, here is the problem. An important HP Vectra VL7 Pentium II 400 Mhz system running Windows 2000 Pro SP4 died, and its the motherboard. The system needs to be up and running quickly, within the next few days, and I attempted to install the 8.4 GB IDE HD into a newer Compaq Pentium 4 ( 1.7 Ghz ) and the system boots up and gets to the Windows Loading (Bars) dashes at the bottom and upon that bar going solid the next screen is a Kernel Error Blue Screen.

Anyone know if there is a way to safely migrate this HD to a P4, or should I be looking for another Pentium 2 to move the hard drive into, that I dont have on hand and would liekly have to pay $50 for on ebay???

If there was a tool to make this work, I'd rather go that route. I am guessing that the Blue screen is due to a HAL difference at boot, and if there is a HAL tweaker out there to make the system happy with a P4 CPU that would be great.

I know I can go the route of a OS Repair Mode with the OEM 2000 Pro CD, but not sure what problems this could cause being that the OS is SP4 and the CD is SP1 or earlier SP0.

Thanks,

Dave You can get motherboard and CPU combos but not for 50 dollars. Since the data is more important then the PC I would get a external harddrive case. The harddrive won't work cause of the fact that when you install windows it stores info about what your pc is. aka video card sound card stuff like that. There isn't any software that will repair it. So if you want to use a External HardDrive case go to www.computergeeks.com and it will ship out from California. When you go to use have your HardDrive set to cable select that way the data can be read. Thanks for your help... The problem I had was that the software on the system needed to run that was registered against that hardware. I got the Pentium 2 Windows 2000 Pro system running on the Pentium 4 by getting the system virtualized by installing Virtual PC 2007 to my P4 system, and then taking a Ghost 2003 image I had of the system from a few months ago and install the image to the virtual hard drive/virtual session.

Somehow the VPC environment didnt break the software and it is behaving and faster then ever on the P4 and shared CPU and 256MB Ram of the 1GB in the P4.

After the installation of the image to the Virtual PC session, I was able to CREATE a folder share to the C: drive of my P4 system, use a USB to IDE tool to get the data to my C: drive off of the 8.4 GB drive, then pull the data to the Virtual PC environment to migrate the latest data to the system and have it up and running just like before, and faster being that it is on a multitasked P4 compared to the P2.

I am very surprised that the migration to a Virtual PC environment was so simple. Also not quite sure how this works, but the Virtual environment is pulling from DHCP to have a unique IP lease, at the same time another IP lease for my P4 system through a single NIC on this P4 system, and it is working very well. ( 2 IP addresses for the single NIC and I can ping both addresses on my network, so it isnt just a virtualized gateway between the main IP and the virtual desktop. I guess you could multitask a powerful system into many servers and different IP's through a single adapter if you wanted to, but you wouldnt be able to get around bandwidth saturation if it is busy virtual systems/servers.

I bought and tried VPC 2004 a few years ago and found it to be buggy, but 2007 is awsome! No bugs found yet! Also saw a 64-bit version, but I am still 32-bit. I downloaded and saved the 64-bit for later when I get a 64-bit system and need this handy tool.

I am so happy!!!!

Thanks for your input and link to the ext HD option!

DaveGlad to hear the VPC solution worked...i'm suprised there were no hiccups with Ghost in that enviornment.
I had this issue about 6 months back also with a work PC and to be on the safe side i simply hooked it up as a slave drive and immediately imaged it with Acronis.
Next step was to slipstream all 4 SP's into a Win2K CD.
I then installed to the new machine with the Acronis image and on the prompted reboot instead of letting it continue i used the slipstreamed Win2k to do a repair install which picked up all the new hardware without a glitch. Re-installed all the new MBoard drivers rebooted and thankfully everythin worked perfect.
The only hardware it refused to recognise was the onboard NIC which i solved simply by installing an addon card.
Needless to say the customer was happy.Hello Patio,

Well its funny that you mention Ghost hickupping with VPC, as for I tried to virtualize a point of SALE server which is running Server 2000 environment and from the ghost image it hangs at the initial Windows load bar. Bar starts to move from left to right showing that Server 2000 is loading then solid bar and no activity.

CPU of the server and workstation are very similar 2.66 Ghz P4 in server and my workstation is a 2.8Ghz P4, both socket 478 and without HT.

Tried another ghost image to push to VPC and got same results. So for some ODD reason that I havent figured out yet... The ghost image took to the VPC of the PII on the P4, in a 2000 Pro VPC environment, but the 2000 server, 2000 Pro, and XP Pro of the other Ghost images lock up at the windows loading screen.

Very strange ... Searched Google to see if others reported problems with Ghost 2003 and VPC 2007 and only saw some old posts in REGARDS to Ghost 2003 and VPC 2004.

Was thinking of doing a Server 2000 Repair off the OEM CD through the VPC environment to see if that would fix the boot instructions to behave with VPC, snce you can create a server 2000 VPC environment without any problems.

Strange that it worked at time of need, but now that I am playing more with Ghost and VPC, they dont want to get along...ha ha

Thanks,

DaveI now use Acronis exclusively but i dug out my personal favorite source for Ghost info...

y Merry Christmas !Thanks for that link Patio!

Going to see if I can find answers there.

DaveYou're more than Welcome Dave...

Solve : Raid help?

Answer»

i have an asus motherboard with a amd dual core processor. 4 different hds (not in any sort of raid array). One is for my os (win xp sp2) and 3 for storage of data, mostly movies (all legally purchased) I need some sort of a back up system and raid 1 seems to be the WAY to go. My questions are as follows: First How MANY hard drives can i add in a raid one configuration? is there a limit? if so what do i do? i need to be able to just keep adding hard drives as i get more and more data. Second if i already have the data on the hard drives if i switch it from how it is now to raid 1, will i loose all my data? If so is there a way to get around this? Third if i do go with raid 1 when i run out of room how does it work? do i just SIMPLY go buy two more hds and plug them in and thats that? what will the implications be on my data? thank you so much. i love what you guys have done here. thanks again
***before even CONSIDERING building a RAID array, you need to make sure your motherboard supports it.***

First How many hard drives can i add in a raid one configuration?

as many that can fit on your board.

Quote
is there a limit?

as far as i know, no.

Quote
i need to be able to just keep adding hard drives as i get more and more data.

why not purchase terabyte harddrives as i suggested in your LAST thread?

Quote
if i switch it from how it is now to raid 1, will i loose all my data?

upon reading my motherboard manual, it appears that you do not need to delete your data, but i believe it would be best to create the RAID array on new, empty harddrives.

Quote
Third if i do go with raid 1 when i run out of room how does it work? do i just simply go buy two more hds and plug them in and thats that?

no, you will need to add them to the RAID array.

Quote
what will the implications be on my data?

it depends on how you build your array.

Solve : No display on monitor.?

Answer»

I'll have to apologize for a few of the posts on this thread it appears that some of the users didn't understand your situation. If you're getting no video as you turn on the computer as you mentioned you're not going to be able to get into Safe Mode and you're not going to be able to download drivers for the hard disk drive.

You'll have to first diagnose the video or system startup related issue.

It is possible that your hard drive could be causing this issue. However, generally with hard disk drive ISSUES you'll encounter some type of error message and not no video. Before saying exactly what hardware is causing your system problems lets first try to determine what hardware if any is bad.

When your computer starts you say it seems as if it's going a sleep. First, try disconnecting everything from the back of the computer (keyboard, mouse, network, etc) except the monitor and computer main power and try turning on the computer to see if you get any display.

If you do not get a display try disconnecting the main power, waiting a few seconds and then reconnecting the main power. Try turning on the computer again.

If still no display, try another monitor on the computer, it's possible it could be a simple as a bad monitor.

Finally, if still encounter issues could you let us know if the computer is doing any type of beeping when it starts up?

I have tried all of those things including a different monitor which I took off of my working computer and have had the same results everytime. No display on the monitor, the green light COMES on for a second or two then GOES to yellow. I do not hear any beeps when the computer is starting and it seems all the fans and drives run. I think I hear the hard drive spinning, I hear fans come on when the computer has been on awhile, and when i put a CD in the CD slots they start spinning. But never any display on the monitor, and once the light turns yellow, it never goes back to green.

Thanks again for all the help and advice and any help in the future.Suggest you give "Mitz" another look. Her ARTICLE on this subject is worth a look and very well written.

Solve : Surround Sound Card Problem?

Answer»

Have replaced a copy of Discworld which some kind person had stolen. Game loaded FINE but no sound. Looking in the game menu, I am given the choice of Soundblaster or equivalent sound cards.
I have on board a Trust 5:1 Surround sound CARD and speaker system. Any ideas.
Its good to find a forum like this and I have a whole list of questions to follow.
Many Thanks
discworld is an old DOS game correct?

what is your OS?Yes correct. It is a DOS programme and the operating system is Windows XP. I put in the Trust Card in order that I could download from a Boss recording Studio using the optical output as the line out required a preamp prior to the computer,

Thanks for your interestDOS programs are getting harder to RUN with each Windows version. XP doesn't have much support for DOS programs, especially when it comes to sound.

However, You might consider trying DOSBOX. It's a Windows program that emulates DOS. It still under development, but it works quite well as it is now. It works so well that Sierra recently used it in the re-release of their Quest games (Space Quest, King's Quest, Police Quest) which were mostly (if not all) DOS games.

Manually configuring DosBox takes a bit of practice and guessing (mostly about timing and FPS), but it provides Sound Blaster emulation for the programs and translates that into output for Windows.

They've got a PRETTY big following with a large forum for any support you'd need with the program.

Solve : monitor died after installing game?

Answer»

Hi. I have windows 2000. My nephew installed a computer game & the monitor went black. We checked to make sure that the mouse was working. I had another monitor which we tried - still got a black screen.

Do I need a new driver or video card? I am not real computer literate.

Thank you,
what was the game?
what are the computers specs?

it sounds like a video card problem. we need to know what the video card is.The game was Howard Marks Video Casino Games. My computer is Asus / windows 2000. I can't give you any computer specs because I can't view anything on the monitor. I have 2 hard drives and a lot of memory. But, despite having lots of memory, I have always GOTTEN messages that I'm low on virtual memory & the computer is increasing the size of virtual memory. The monitor light is green when 1st turned in, then turns to orange. I can hear my computer running. can you enter windows in safe mode? ( hold down F8 to enter safe mode)

if you cannot enter into safe mode, then the problem is most likely caused by a faulty video card. are your graphics integrated or non-integrated?*

* below is a pic to determine if your graphics card is integrated or not. tell me which rectangle your monitor is plugged into, the red one or the green one.

[file cleanup - saving space - attachment deleted by admin]No. I cannot enter into safe mode. I could not begin to tell you if my video card is integrated or non-integrated. LOL, I can't even tell you where it is located or what it looks like!Quote from: lindav on January 05, 2008, 11:17:16 PM

Yes, it looks like the picture you gave me.

Yes, but follow your monitor's cable to the back of the computer. Does it got to the area marked by the green box or the red box?The monitor cable goes to the green box.

Don't know how much it matters, but I looked at the monitor again & when I turn it on the color of the power button is not green. It is kind of orange-yellow & stays that color. I get no windows screen or anything what-so-ever. The tower sounds the same as it always has. My monitor started acting up a few years ago. The screen would do a little blip every now & then & my side MARGINS started changing. So, when the monitor went dark, I assumed my monitor had died. But when we hooked up the old monitor I still had the same problem - all dark. Quote
I turn it on the color of the power button is not green. It is kind of orange-yellow & stays that color.

that means its in standby mode, that it is not receiving a signal from your graphics card.

Quote
The monitor cable goes to the green box.

if your monitor plugs into the green area then you have integrated graphics.

in light of this new information, it seems as though your motherboard has had it. you will need to purchase a new motherboard. What exactly is a motherboard? Is it something I can buy & install myself? Or is it best left up to someone who KNOWS what they are doing? Seems to me that my old computer guy replaced my motherboard once before. you MIGHT be able to get away with only purchasing a new video card, but my thinking is if there is one thing wrong with the motherboard, how do we know that there are not other things wrong with it, and how will one failed device on the motherboard affect its other devices?

Quote
What exactly is a motherboard?

this is a motherboard. it is what every device in your computer hooks up to. they come in many different shapes, sizes, makes, and models.

you can buy and install it yourself, but based on your first question, i would strongly recommend letting someone else buy and install it.

Solve : Epson Printers?

Answer»

I have to Epson printers that won't printer a C66 & C82. Is there any on-line printer GUIDES to cleaning the print head. Just do what any of us would have to do for you if we were to ANSWER this question:
CLICK HERETried that 3 or 4 times an didn't get a manual, thought I did get ONE for a C84.Obviously you didn't try very hard. Both on the first page of my searches on Google:

http://files.support.epson.com/pdf/sc66__/sc66__pg.pdf

http://files.support.epson.com/pdf/sc82__/sc82__pg.pdf

You probably had worded yours differntly then mine. Epson printer manual c82 c66Sorry should have looked at them right off, I ment away to take it apart and put it back together to clean the head. You took printer apart to clean print heads?I mean a service manual, no but I need to if you don't use the ink after a certain time where in comes out to go on to the PAPER dries up an no matter how many times you run the cleaning process on the printer itself the problem remains there an whatever you print blankThey're not meant to be taken apart in that way and you probably won't find a 'manual' for doing so.

The best thing to do would be to contact Epson and ask them what the best way to proceed would be. I doubt anyone here has the specific experience needed with each of those printers to give accurate information on how to take them apart. Not to the general public, yeah I GOT one for a c84. They would tell me to run the printer head cleaner. Doesn't hurt to try.

Hi abdullahabel, welcome to CH.

What operating SYSTEM is this? Its slow because you only have 256 MB RAM. Most computers today have at least 1 GB (1024 MB)the 3.0ghz processor ISNT your problem but as previously STATED your 256 mb ram is a big problem. try upgrading to atleast 512 if not 1-2 gb. also you stated games are a big thing that go slow, and seeing your 32 mb video card, you should probalby upgrade your video card too. you can get a decent card w/ 256 mb ram AND 2 gb of ram for about $100-$130 on newegg.com no problem

2. Did you ground yourself before poking around inside the computer? I hope so...

3. Can you hook up an EXTERNAL monitor to the VGA connection?

Solve : Faulty Motherboard??

Answer»

My Father recently bought this computer new off of Newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883107495

When he first turned the thing on, it began to WORK, but locked up. Shortly thereafter, it stopped displaying altogether. No Beeps. No Display.

Let it sit an hour whilst I THOUGHT. Turned it on. It began to boot VISTA. Locked up. Hasn't worked since. Same problems. No beeps, no display. Also, the infamous orange loading light has yet to appear once.

It worked previously, so I know the Monitor isn't the problem.
Tried checking the RAM one at a time. Nothing worked. Tried resetting/setting the Jumpers. Still didn't work. Let it sit without BATTERY. Didn't work. You can hear the hard drive spin. Fans work. Everything inside seems to be working.

I have to wonder if the frustratingly BRAND NEW motherboard is shot?

Any Ideas? There is a full One Year warranty on that machine...i would take advantage of that.
Newegg is very good at customer service. In all my dealings with NewEgg, I've had good fortune, but apparently (and this is what my stubborn father tells me) They haven't gotten back to him at all. He can't get a hold of them, he says. Email nor phone. So I'm exploring the options of fixing it myself. That doesn't sound right...they are usually very responsive.
Keep in mind attempting to fix it may VOID that warranty.
Have you contacted them ? ?
I'd try that first...especially for a new machine.

Solve : Dos Commands?

I typed in directory an got DRDOS,OAK,NR,WWBMU,README,AutoDos7,Dconfig
If dir does not show dlgdiag as an available file you'll get the bad command or file name error message. This is also why the FORMAT command is not working.

As I believe was mentioned above it's likely this is just a diagnostic diskette you're using and not a setup diskette. If you're wanting access to a format command you may want to simply use your Windows XP disc and boot from it and setup the drive using it.I want to put linux on it, but it was a slave to one that had xp. I was told by patio to try that.Okay I got into fdisk with it an it says when I go to delete the parition Enter the number of partitions to delete, I press one and it says you can't do this in stander mode strike a key to return to main menu. When I type format an I get invaild command, /HELP /f:size /N Sectors /T:Tracks. I have 2K HD in the system KNOW the other one was a slave with no os an I got this program requires a fixed disk when I did fdiskFirst, make sure you're booting from a bootable diskette if you're planning on using either of these utilities.

Not familiar with fdisk prompting you with how MANY partitions you wish to delete. Where in fdisk are you going to get this option?

What is the format command you're typing *exactly*?So I have to have a floppy in the bay? The main menu on FDISK 1) Create Partition 2)Delete Partition 3)Select Bootable Partition 4)Select Alternate fixdisk 5)Rewrite Master bootrecored

Pressed 2 and came up w/ enter desire option, 1 delete primary partition,Then it comes up with number of partions to delete. Here's some info about the partitions on there.

Solve : Is it a lost cause??

Answer»

Hi guys, hope you can help.

I have a year 2000 computer with failing hard drive which would freeze. FOUND out it's easy to replace, bought new one, and found when I opened it, it had capability for 2 hard drives so I could just plug in the new one and away.

Problem:

I had to unclip and remove the processor (cube with fan on top and lots of pins underneath) in order to slot new hard drive in, got it connected and secured ok, but when trying to gingerly replace the processor managed to bend one of the pins which then fell off, and of course it now won't work at all.

Question:

The new drive was £120 and now it's been connected I can't GET my money back - what should I do? I have a newer machine and just thought I could put the old one to good use as a backup, thus it is not essential. PC World have told me I'd need to replace the processor, the pin can't be replaced. A new processor inc labour is about £140 if I can get one. Do I put more good money after bad in the hope, or put it down to experience and face the loss?

Thanks, any help greatly appreciated.

BoozoIf one of the pins has came off of the CPU then yes, you will need to replace it.

Stay clear of PC World though, they will rob you the first chance they get.

Btw, why did you have to remove the CPU & fan to install a new hard drive? Unless you really want to replace the CPU and revive that computer, I would just put the hard drive in your newer computer for some extra space.

My guess would be poor design. In my computer, the drive cage is so low, none of the original cables will reach if I want to add a second hard drive. You can usually get a good deal on an old year 2000

DIY-computer jobs are, as mentioned, the most satisfying. If the missing pin is lodged in the CPU slot this may be a bit more difficult...
First thing to try is remove the MBoard. put the ZIF lever in the up position and turn the board upside down and shake gently. HOPEFULLY it will just drop out.

Solve : computer boots wierd?

so, i have a little problem, after i installed a second 80gb hdd, the computer has been booting wierd here is how:

computer starts boots up, displays the info crap and then goes to the windows xp loading screen
then, the computer does all this a SECOND time and my computer goes into the selection of safe mode normal mode blah blah blah.
when i choose normal mode it displays the crap, then goes to xp loading screen and starts up as normal with no problems.

what could be causing this to happen? i dont think it is anything dangerous, but its annoying and it takes 3x longer to BOOT up, so i want it gone

thanks for anyone who can helpWhat anti-virus and anti-spyware SOFTWARE do you have installed?just the regular microsoft crapReally? Not GOOD...

That MS horse manure is not protecting you at all...

Download and install the following applications:

Spybot - Search & Destroy
AVG Free Edition

Now boot Windows in Safe Mode and run a full scan with each application.
What do they find?i got 37 threats
whado i do?I don't think, your problem is malware related, since it started right after you installed second HD.
Maybe, you hooked it up incorectly, but you'll have to wait for hardware guys to answer your questions.

Having malwares on your computer is another issue. That may be checked later. How are the drives connected physically and how are they jumpered ? ?
Your old drive which contains the OS on it should be jumpered as master or master w/slave and connected to the end connector of the ribbon cable...
The new drive should be jumpered as slave and connected to the middle connector of the IDE ribbon cable.

Was there anything on this 80G drive ? ?
If it had Windows on it as WELL and is jumpered improperly that would cause these symptoms...

Solve : computer speeds up while moving curser?

Answer»

I have Windows XP. Recently I have noticed that I have to keep the curser MOVING (via the mouse) in order to: render my slide shows (created in Pro Show Gold), view my slide shows, send FILES and folders to other folders and download anything.
The rendering speed slows down to an eight hour job instead of a twenty minute job if I don't keep the curser moving. This all happens within thirty SECONDS of stopping the curser.
My finished slide shows get very glitchy and EVENTUALLY stops once I stop moving the curser. Even slide shows on the internet, created by different programs, are affected in the same way.
I have been creating slide shows with this program for two years without this problem. Downloading and sending files to other folders have been a problem in the past.
This mouse thing is a bit of a nuisance, Help.
I don't think this is a hardware problem. But how often do you scan your pc? TRY doing this if you haven'tI would hook up another mouse and see if it does the same thing...
If it does you could try re-installing ProShow Gold.

Solve : installing a new hard disk?

Answer»

Hi. I have an XP machine, which has a very old noisy 20gb HDD. I have bought a new faster 250gb drive. I have installed the new drive as the secondary MASTER then booted up on my old drive. FIRST I formatted the new drive as a dynamic disk 'simple' type. I shut down and using a bootable floppy downloaded from

http://www.pcinspector.de/Sites/clone_maxx/info.htm?Language=1

I copied the old drive onto the new one using this utility (clone maxx.) Then I disconnected the old drive and set the new one to be the primary master. I booted up fine on the new drive, but the clone maxx Ive used seems to be also copying over the old partition information. I now have a 20gb partition at the start of my new drive and then the rest is showing as unused. I could create a new partition there, but I'd rather have one big partition.

Second I tried again with formatting the new disk as a basic disk with one big partition. I repeated the whole process of booting from floppy and swapping the drives over, but the same thing has happened again.

What I would like to know is how to copy the old drive onto the new one but end up with one big partition filling the whole disk?

Any help MUCH apprecited

Chrisim no expert at data recovery or harddrive partitioning but i do not believe it is possible to clone your old HD without partitioning your new HD.Use the software that came with the drive. If you didn't recieve a CD with it simply DLoad it from the new drive manuf. site and use it to create a bootable CD.
You'll have to hook up the old drive as it was...primary master.Hi

It didn't come with any software, and the Hitachi website doesn't seen to have any My guess is you want to new hard drive all under one partition because that's what you're familiar with. But, partitioning a drive can be advantageous and many PEOPLE prefer to have multiple partitions. A general scenario is that the C partition would be where Windows is installed and other programs. But, data files, photos, music, etc., could be stored on one or more other partitions.

That 20GB partition that was created on your new drive would be fine for Windows and programs; 20GB would be ADEQUATE for Windows and programs for most users. If more space is needed, programs can be installed on another partition.

My point: why not leave the 20GB partition as is, and create one or more partitions on the rest of the drive space? Do you mean the new drive is an Hitachi ? ?

Solve : USB connections - not enough ??

Answer»

I am building a new -"old" computer, Tyan S2665 Dual Xeon. On this mother board there is only one (1) connection for the USB port. 2x 5 headers. But on the back panel there are 4 USB ports.

The CASE I got is the CoolerMaster Stacker and that comes with six (6) USB ports and I have a card reader that uses the same USB connector on the MB, for a total of 4 female connectors. I know I don't need all 7 USB ports, but I do need 2 and the card reader. Does anyone make an adapter for this?? Maybe SOMETHING of a "Y" from the 2x 5 header to the two USB connectors.
It would be tooooo much of a PITA to use the rear USB's having to pull the PC in/out everytime I needed another USB port.

I had some time and made one up from perf board, some headers and lot's of small hard wiring and realized that the cable from the USB ports are shielded and grounded and my little adapter I made is not. So maybe my little adapter board would cause too much interference in the case. I don't know, not an EE so that's why I'm asking. I'm at WORK but will load up pic's when I get home, later on.The easiest solution would be an ADD on PCI/USB card that will give you an additional 2, 4 or 6 USB ports.
They also come as a combo USB/Firewire card if you are anticipating having any Firewire devices down the road.

About 20 to 30 Bucks at any computer store...I already have 4 USB ports on the back of the MB, so another PCI/USB card would not work for me.

This is on the MB - just enough for one (1) female connector

These are to the front panel of the case and the other is to the card reader

The front of the case

I made this, but not sure if the interference would be too bad or not, since the USB cables are grounded and shielded.

Solve : Nvidia 8600 GTS 512mb GDDR2 ?is it good??

Answer»

hey guys?

do u think it is a good graphics card guys for running GAMES for maybe two years ahead?i know it also DEPENDS on the rest of the PC components but i wanna if this is a good one?i think it'll be fine for another year or so at DECENT settings at fine frame rates, if you dont already have the card save your money for a 8800gt you can get one for around $200 on newegg, and it has GREAT price/performance and this card should last you at least 2 years or soI would avoid the 8600GTS.
Either save the cash and get an 8600GT, or spend some more and get an 8800GT.
The 8800 is much more powerful, and whilst I can't say that any card around now will run the latest games at high settings in 2 years, it'll play them far better than an 8600 series.

Solve : Sata data connector shot?

Answer»

Hi, i am blessed to have an almost new Dell E520, Intel G965 chipset, dual booting Vista HB with XP, but on which I evidently shorted Sata connector #4 on the motherboard. It was hard to see, and I gently removed the cable but the end was still STUCK in the mobo (I know, the clip...). The PC was off, but I stupidly tried to rejoin the plug and see if it would work when I booted up, and while no warning, etc occurred, that port will not work anymore even with ANOTHER OK gear cable. It is switched on in the BIOS, along with all other Sata connectors, but no drive is detected, though they work on the other connectors.

I am glad it did not affect the rest of the board. Comments are welcome but is there a way to run two drives off one data connector? ThanksThere are a few different solutions...
If there is a local PC repair shop in your area contact them to see if they do board level REPAIRS. They can replace the connector fairly easily...expect to pay 40 to 50 Bucks.
You could also buy and install an addon SATA card that will give you 2/4 additional SATA ports if you have an empty PCI slot on the MBoard. ( You may want to consider a combo card that has Bluetooth connectors as well if you are looking at any Bluetooth devices )

The nice thing about this dilemna is it didn't take the HDD out with it as it easily could have.

Good Luck and let us know...THANKS Patio from your prompt reply. Yes, the HD and PC works fine, thank God, and right now i am running 3 HD's on it, with an external IDE pata drive sometimes.

As i am looking for the most economical solution, I think I will go for the card. This mobo has one PCI Express x16 connector, one PCI Express x1 connector, and two PCI connectors, whatever the differences are, so there is room. Or maybe a USB sata enclosure would be handy. The PCI express slots are for video cards...
The regular PCI slots will be fine for your needs and most economical. I grabbed a 4 slot SATA PCI card with one Bluetooth slot after the Holiday's for 28 bucks. Thanks again for the tips. No problem.
Let us know how it goes for you.
You may have to re-install the SATA drivers and/or the drivers that ship with the addon card.

Solve : DVD+R?

Answer»

My problem is--

I used an Imation DVD+R to record a tv programme- I played the DVD back and the recording was successful. I then put into into the disc drive of my laptop as I want to make screencaps of the programme. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6400- it should be compatible with this type of DVD, i think, because on the disc drive it has LOGOS for CD rewritable ULTRA speed, DVD+R and DVD R/RW.

However, the following window pops up -
all the options are related to blank cds etc, not playing the dvd.

Where am I going wrong? Do I need to download something first?

Thanks for your time Ignore the choices in the autorun Window off to the right...
Right click the E:drive ICON and select Open With...
Then choose which program you want to play it with I.E. WMP etc.I don't have an Open With... option, the Open option just takes me to a blank white window
I just tried to drag the E drive icon into WMP but it said it didn't recognise the file type. Help!Quote from: ***Anna*** on January 07, 2008, 07:11:42 AM

My problem is--

I used an Imation DVD+R to record a tv programme- I played the DVD back and the recording was successful.

Can you elaborate? What did you use to record it and where did you play it back?I used my DVD player (Cello) to record it and played it back on the dvd player.More details-
WMP, when the e drive is dragged into it, says that it doesn't recognise the extension (.) but will go ahead if it gets permission. I agree and it says that it has encountered a problem while playing the file. I select the web help option and get the following:
Windows Media Player Error Message Help
You've encountered error message C00D11B1 while using Windows Media Player. The following information might help you troubleshoot the issue.

Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:

Your sound device, such as a sound card or sound controller, requires an updated driver. To determine if an updated driver is available, see Windows UPDATE at the Microsoft Web site, or see the sound device manufacturer's Web site.

Your sound device is not functioning properly. Try using Device Manager to check the status of your sound device.

To check the status of your sound device
Do one of the following:

If you are running Windows XP, click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.

If you are running Windows Vista, click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Manage.

In the pane on the left, click Device Manager.

In the pane on the right, expand Sound, video and game controllers, and then look for the name of your sound device.

Do one of the following:

If your sound device is listed but the icon includes a red "X," the device has been disabled. To enable the device, right-click the icon, and then click Enable.

If your sound device is not listed, in the pane on the right, expand Other DEVICES. If Multimedia Audio Controller appears in the list, right-click the icon, and then click Update Driver or Update Driver Software. Follow the on-screen instructions to find and install the driver software.

If you are not able to find and install the correct driver software, see your computer manufacturer's or sound device manufacturer's Web site for further assistance.

You do not have a sound device installed on your computer. Install a sound device, and then try to play the file again. For details, see your computer manufacturer's or sound device manufacturer's Web site.

You are trying to play a file on the Internet and the server might be temporarily unavailable or there might be a network issue. Try again later.

You are trying to play an MP3 file that contains compressed ID3 headers. The ID3 header is a portion of the file that stores the song's album information (for example, the song name, artist name, album name, and genre). This information is sometimes called a "tag."

To fix the problem, make a copy of the file and then use a non-Microsoft ID3 tag editing program to remove or reset the file's ID3 headers. After you remove the ID3 headers, Windows Media Player should be able to play the MP3 file.

Attempting to remove ID3 headers might damage the file and make it unplayable. Therefore, always make a copy of the file before you edit it.

If this solution does not resolve the problem, the file might be corrupted.

Any suggestions? Why is "open with" not appearing when I right click on the e drive icon? 'Open with...' only shows when right clicking on files, not drives or folders since they're always opened in Windows Explorer.

There is a chance that a setting is wrong in your Cello, the Cello is faulty, or your DVD drive in your computer is faulty.

Try playing the DVD is another DVD player and/or computer (perhaps a friend's or a relative's) and see what happens. Try a different brand of DVD+R and see if that works.

Solve : E-machine T6420 wont boot up..?

Answer»

The problem is this.
When I turn on the PC all I get on the display is "No signal detected" (monitor is good). The PC acts like its in sleep mode. For awhile I had to turn on/off to get it to boot. I visually CHECKED the mobo and found nothing wrong.
I now have to UNPLUG the PC to turn it off. (maybe a bad switch?)
The following things do run when I turn on PC.
The power SUPPLY fan comes on
The CPU fan comes on
The keyboard lights come on
The HDD light comes on and stay on
The DVD drive light comes on

Things i already tried before booting up PC
Disconnected HDD, and then the DVD drive.
I pulled the CMOS battery and placed it back
Disconnect the mouse

Im really frustated with E-machine reps .. No help what so ever.. Told me to take it to repair shop where I bought the thing.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Most likely it's a motherboard problem. I've run many calls and have ended up replacing BOTH the motherboard and power supply to make it right.

not really the BEST idea as without the HD you will not be able to load windows.

im kind of out of time right now, but if you answer those two questions above, it would be a great help.I tested the monitor on another PC it works fine.
I can turn on PC with the power button, but have to unplug it to turn off.
When i turn on PC I get a "No signal detected" on the monitor.
Some times the light around the power button will flash on and off. (Wierd)
Im going to try and see if its the power supply. I m hoping that its not the motherboard.

I m hoping that its not the motherboard.

sadly, that is what i am starting to suspect. the video is integrated into the motherboard, you might be able to get away with purchasing an independant video CARD however, though i do not recommend it.

upon doing some research, it appears many others have had problems with thier T6420 motherboards...

Solve : Windows Crack / Freeze / Reboot playing COD 4?

Answer»

Good Morning Everyone

First time here and would like to ask for your help

I build a PC for gamer and here is what I have:

Motherboard: Asus P5B – SE
CPU: Duo Core E6850
Ram: 4 GB
Graphic CARD: XFX 8800GT then Radeo X1650
Power Supply: 680 W then 550 W
Running Windows XP
Test Game Call of Duty 2 and Call of Duty 4

First, when I use the XFX 8800, the PC SEEMS to be alright at first. Then I install game and play it (testing both games), the PC becomes every unstable; Crash / Reboot itself and if I turn OFF the Automatic Reboot, the windows crash with blue screen and I have the message as IQL_NOT_EQL_OR_LESS … Then I start having this problem EVEN without playing game… (I install the game to my laptop and playing just fine without any problem for both games)

I swap the graphic card to Radeo X1650 and also the Power Supply Unit. Reinstall the windows and just the games… I can be able to play COD 2 without any windows disturbed. However, when I play COD 4, the game Crash and Freeze… and also the PC reboot itself. I did not turn of the auto reboot this time.

I have been doing research and people are talking about OVERCLOCKING and SPEED UP the Fan… I am not familiar with this subject so I am wonder if ANYONE can help me on this problem:

1.Have any one seen a similar problem and find out the solution?
2.Should I overclocking and Speed up the Fan? I am not sure how hot is too hot for the CPU and Graphic Card. And will it give my PC even more unstable?
3.How do I test my Asus P5B SE if my Mother board having any defect problem?

Thanks a lot
with the 8800GT, did you remember to plug in the supplmentary power connector?

you should not need to INCREASE the fan speed on a video card running at stock speeds.

Solve : SCSI connections?

Answer»

I have a Roland hard DISC multi-track music recorder. The only output--digital wise--is an SCSI connector.

This recorder was a made a few years AGO before the advent of USB everywhere.

I would like to CONNECT it to my computer or even an external hard drive, etc.

Does anyone know if there is an adaptor or hub that could switch the SCSI to USB?

Or is there some other way to connect? You can get a PCI/SCSI card if you have an empty PCI SLOT in that machine...this will require installing the drivers that ship with the card.
This would be a more efficient SOLUTION than an adapter. When you say, "that machine" do you mean the Roland recorder? I don't think it has slots for anything not already there. If you mean the computer I would be trying to connect the Roland to, then, I think I can do that.Sorry for the misunderstanding...PCI slot in the computer.

Solve : When I double-click on my hard disk drive, the message - 'Choose the program ...?

Answer»

Hi there!

When I double-click on my hdd, i get a window instead with a message telling me 'Choose a program you want to USE to open this file:'

I have the Kaspersky 6 Anti-virus software installed in my computer. When I ran it, it detected the virus Trojan-PSW.Win32.WOW.aid. The virus is gone (I think) but the hdd problem is still there-I can't open the drive. I've tried to do a disk cleanup & disk fragmentation but this did not help.

Can any good samaritan pls tell me how to solve this problem?

Did you scan and remove the infection in Safe Mode?
What operating SYSTEM?

Windows xp. No, i did not scan it in safe mode. I'll do this & see if it helps.

Thanx!Hi,
I ran my computer under safe mode but it my anti-virus software was disabled so, i couldn't scan anything...

Anymore ideas pls?Right click your C: drive icon and select Open. Then, locate and delete a file called 'autorun.inf'. This is what's causing that.

While this will fix your immediate problem, you still need to rescan your computer with several tools to ensure the problem is gone. I'll let one of the Malware Experts guide you through that.Hi Quaxo,

I still couldn't open my drive when I right-clicked & selected open. I used an alternative to open the drive- Microsoft Internet Explorer. I then clicked on the Search box, chose 'All Files and Folders', typed in the name of the file - autorun.inf, then selected 'Advanced Options' and checked 'Search hidden files and folders'.

When I hit the search button, it detected a hidden folder in drive c: named autorun.inf, so I right-clicked on it and selected delete.

I then restarted my computer and double-clicked(fingers crossed!) on drive c: It opened!!

Thanks
Glad to have helped.

But don't stop checking yet. Let one of the malware guys here guide you through getting that computer checked out and fully cleaned (just to be sure).it opened which is good.

now if you have USB flash drive, install a portable antivirus software to it. Update and scan computer with it in safe mode to double check that your computer is NOT sick anymore.

The portable antivirus on your computer won't be disabled in safe mode so it'll work!sandratz

Solve : Where is all my memory hiding??

Answer»

I just got another PC and i've got it running in good shape, besides the fact that my HD is almost empty for an unknown reason. It is a 19gb drive and I currently have 4.97gb remaining. I have thoroughly cleaned this PC, ran CCleaner, Defrag, Scandisk, AdAware and gone through Add&Remove as well. I've cleaned up the old music on the drive and still can't find what's bogging me down. I even ran HiJackthis just to be sure and came up with nothing. Add&Remove is filled with lots of XP Hotfixes and Security updates but other than that there are no pronounced files that should be TAKING up this MUCH space and i'm also AWARE that the OS TAKES up space..but not this much. I'm also aware that 19gb isn't alot of space, but there is still memory being used that shouldn't be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Get Disk Space Reporter: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/Disc-Space-Reporter.shtml

Solve : Nvidia Geforce 6600 GT power problem?

Answer»

Hi,

First of all, apologies if this seems a SILLY question, but I REALLY do have limited experience with things like this. Secondly, THANKS in advance for anyone that can HELP me. So, here goes...

I have recently purchased an Nvidia Geforce 6600 GT graphics card for my computer. It states that to work PROPERLY it needs to be plugged into the internal power supply. Unfortunately, the only available power supply doesn't reach the graphics card, so I can't plug it in. So, where do I go from here? Is there a way of buying something like an extension so that it will reach? Or not? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Many Thanks

LeeYeah something like this should work:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812201006

But maybe all you need to do is to swap some of the power connectors around? You should have some connectors that are capable of reaching the graphics card.

I have tried to start it up on several occasions and have got into BIOS as well as just starting up the process of installing Windows and the PC constantly loses all power. The loss of power happens at various random times but always within 30 SECS of turning on.
