Solve : Computer turns off spontaneously?

Answer»

No problem, come back if you have more issues.

And don't open up any more POWER supplies; No USER serviceable parts inside.Oh, yeah! I have a science degree and have had my fair share of physics lab courses. May not be an electronics EXPERT but do know what HAPPENS when a capacitor discharges. Ouch (or SOMETHING less clean) is definitely the word.

Thanks again for all the help guys.

Solve : Avalog and DVI Question?

Answer»

Hey guys right now I am in the process of building a new rig. I am trying to choose a video CARD atm. But I have run into a LARGE problem and probably the last thing I would have thought about. I have noticed that all of the new video cards are no longer serial port and now they are DVI. My current monitor which is a Sharp Aquos flat screen only has the hdtv hookup and the serial port hookup (NO DVI)...so am I PRETTY much screwed with this monitor that is only a year old? If it doesnt have DVI I cannot transmit from video card to monitor or does the HDTV port allow you to do this...sorry im a noob when it comes to video related topics. Any help would be great.

It's not called a 'serial port' but a VGA port or D-SUB.

You should have been given a VGA(F)to DVI(M) CONVERTER with your videocard if it is of decent quality. If not, your local PC store might sell one.Quote

Solve : Very Noisy Alienware?

Answer»

Hello,

I just inherited an Alienware Computer. I know you want to know more about it than that. All I know at this point is that it is very noisy. If someone would be so kind as to tell me how, in Windows XP Home Edition, SP2 to look up hardware details, I'll gladly supply more detail here.

My question is, am I stuck with a noisy gift horse (which is not altogether a bad THING) or do I have options to make it quieter?

And speak up when you answer, please! [smiley=huh.gif]

Thanks, ThetimothThanks Proph:

Processor: x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 1 Authentic AMD ~2255Mhz
ASUS A7N8X ACPI BIOS Rev 1017 Beta 005 TO, 10/31/2002
SMBIOS Version 2.2
Total Physical memor 512.00 MB
Available 329.43 MB
Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB

Drive C = Size: 55.89 GB [highlight](question ==> is this a 60 GB Hard Drive?)[/highlight]
Free SPACE 46.89 GB

The case requires a round key for access. I've yet to secure one.

ThetimothAn "inherited" computer with no key to the case? I guess it can happen....I just got those last to inferences. I feel ... misjudged.

It's the truth. Nephew upgraded. His grandmother (my mother-in-law) offered me choice of the Alienware or help purchasing/building new one. I chose to start with the former.

Had never heard of Alienware, but when told about it, looked it up on the internet. Saw that they appear to be popular game machines, in some circles. I use for music composition and pretty tame office stuff, so it seemed plenty for my purposes.

The CD component doesn't work, though, so I can't install High Speed Internet drivers.

The CD unit lights up and spins a little during boot up, but once boot up is complete, it won't open, close or spin at all. What's up with that? (Should I move this question to a different/new topic?)

thetimoth

Insert a straight paper clip into the small hole on the front of the unit...Patio,

Thanks. I guess I wasn't clear. I've done that. It's not that there's something stuck in it. The problem is it doesn't work, once the machine is booted. I've looked (though my experience is limited) at the hardware configuration, and I can't see any devices that look like they're supposed to be a CD/DVD component. For a brief second, near the end of the boot process, a logo flashes on the desktop InCd. Is that a brand of CD component? A software thing? Indication that there's more life than I think there is, I just need to know where to resuscitate it?

Thanks againInCD is included with some CD burning software to make a CDRW disc act like a big floppy disk. It also cause problems frequently.

Without knowing any of the history of the machine I would make sure the CD is showing up in the BIOS/setup screen. If not yo will have to get the case open somehow (locksmith or computer shop?) to check the power/data cable. If that doesn't work, then replacing the drive is the next step. You could also clean the thing of dust at that time. Many thanks,

All very, very helpful.

ThetimothAnd uninstall INCD...it's WORTHLESS and causes havoc as you have seen.

Solve : a:drive problem?

Answer»

I'm going BACK to my problem with my a: drive. To REFRESH your memory, when I log off and turn off my computer, the green LED comes on and the drive makes a noise as if there were a disk still in the drive. On that note, as I was doing a virus scan on my computer, I noticed that on the scan list it said Scanning disk: folders & files: a:\
Boot sector of disk A
Error reading disk sector
Path A: is invalid Can anyone tell me what all this means, and what does path A is invalid mean. I'm thinking that this may have something to do with my a:drive problem. By the way, I use NOD antivirus.
Can someone help.
"Path A is invalid" and things LIKE that during a scan means it can't read the drive, presumably you don't have a disk in there
As we said in your other thread, try checking your settings on your antivirus to see if there is an option to scan DRIVES when logging offHow about an uninstall and reinstall of your virus scanner? You never said what it was, so we can't help further.Hello!
My OS is win xp PRO ed.I am using NOD 32 antvirus, now I did check all of the settings and I did not find an option that checks for disks when you log off. I will probably try to do an uninstall to see if this will work . Thanks

Solve : Pentium 4 vs Core 2 Duo?

Answer»

I currently use a Compaq notebook with Pentium 4, 2.2GHz, 1.2GHz and 768MB of RAM. I am looking at buying a new Dell notebook with Core 2 Duo, 1.66GHz, 2MB Cache, 667 MHz FSB and 1024MB RAM.

To be honest I'm just quoting the specs in front of me and would like an indication on which is the better option in terms of processing power/speed.

Clearly the RAM on the Dell is superior and I assume (blindly) that Core 2 Duo is superior to Pentium 4 but have no idea on the other specs.

Would really appreciate some help on this - let me know if more info needed.

Cheers, :-?What can you not do (well) now that the new computer would accomplish? How do you think a DualCore Pentium would be helpful?

The bottom line is does the investment in a new machine solve a need or is it just yearning for the "latest and greatest"?Good QUESTIONS. I guess the only thing my current notebook struggles with (that I've come across) is graphics acceleration - it has Radeon 7500 (32mb). But that is a separate issue I guess.

I should have explained myself more - my current notebook is supplied by work and I would like to buy one for personal use. Hence I was hoping to get an idea of other (more current) options in comparison to what I currently use.

I plan to use the notebook for Office apps, IE, simple digital video editing and medium LEVEL gaming.

Do you think I would notice a difference in performance (either way) with the Core Duo? Would also appreciate a brief explanation why.

Cheers for your help,ALL Laptops struggle with graphical issues.

They're not designed for 3D games and applications because videocards generate too MUCH heat.

An ATI 7500 is quite DECENT for a laptop, what does the other one come with?Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 950 (with up to to 224MB of shared memory)

Cheers,That one is definitely onboard. I am not sure about the ATI 7500, though. Onboard = bad. If you have a choice, that is.Onboard?

Can you explain what this means?

Cheers,A videocard that shares memory is often onboard; also meaning that it doesn't have it's own processor and is thus pretty crappy for games.

Solve : Printer problems.?

Answer»

I have 2 printers which have both thrown glitches within the last week. Any ideas to improve matters would be welcomed.
When I switch my HP Deskjet 720C on it immediately flashes the paper FEED light and I cannot get it to TAKE in any paper or do ANYTHING else.
My Epson Stylus Color 440, at the end of a short print run, started to flash all 3 lights (paper-feed and empty cartridge) but will not accept paper. I have replaced the ink cartidge but to no avail. Switching the machine off and on produces the same result.
I have disconected and re-installed both printers but with no success.

e-mail any ideas, if suitable, to [emailprotected]Don't show your email address as anyone can see it and you'll be deluged with spam in no time
If you want your email address available put it in your profile so only members can see it and REMOVE it from the post
Also, people should post ideas on the form so other people can see the problem and collaborate to help solve it
Anyway, sorry but I don't know about your printers, hang on a bit and someone will be along to assist

Solve : Problem with cpu?

Answer»

Hi,
My machine is dead. When i switch on the cpu led glows and the MONITOR led blinks. No beep sounds. I could not find any display in the monitor, even the post or bios. After 10 seconds the cpu gets switched off automatically. I thought the problem would be with the monitor and i swapped my monitor and connected to my neighbour's cpu, it worked FINE. So obviously there is some problem with the cpu. I couldnt troubleshoot further. Can anyone help me PLEASE.The CPU is the processor, not the whole tower. The problem is somewhere in the tower. The most likely suspects are: BAD power supply unit, bad motherboard or failed procesor, in that order.

What are the specifics of the machine, make and model, processor, na,e and wattage on the power supply unit itself, how OLD etc.Quote

Possibly a heat or power supply problem, but it's just a guess not knowing any specs of your system. Is your system feeling hot at all? Is it dusty? Also, have you changed any hardware recently? Please post more specs.

Solve : upgrading an old gateway?

Answer»

I have a gateway essential 433mz PROCESSOR 191 mb RAM 10 gig hard drive running windows 98 and I would like to put in a secondary hard drive and more memory, problem is I dont know how big a secondary hard drive or how much more memory I can install with out problems. Any advise and help appriciated. ThanksWhy do you want add memory? You have PLENTY for Win 98. Are you planning to install Win XP? Anyway, to see how much memory you could add, I suggest you visit www.crucial.com and use their memory advisor. You will need to at least know the Gateway model number to do that. It should be on the case.

You can add another hard drive if there is ROOM for it inside the case, that is a bracket for it to go into. If not, then the existing drive could be replaced. Does the machine run fine? I agree that your RAM is more than sufficient for Windows 98.Without knowing any details about your computer's BIOS, I think I'd not get a drive larger than 80GB.Thank you, the old gateway runs great! in fact better sometimes than this DELL I am on now. If the ram is fine then I would just like to replace or add another hard drive. Thanks again.

Solve : analog 1?

Answer»

I turned on a computer in our office and the screen was just black so I tried turning it off and then back on. A message that says "Analog 1" appears for a few seconds and then the screen goes blank. The same thing happens every time I turn the screen on and off. Any ideas?Welcome to the FORUMS...

An absolutely brilliant idea would be that you tell us something about this computer...

Have a read here..

Get back with the info pleaseIt is a Dell I believe OT7570. The screen is flat screen View Sonic VP171b and we're RUNNING Windows XP.The only info I've come up with is that the problem is possibly caused by a faulty connection, have you unplugged/replugged the screen and can you try the screen on another pc :-?

If the screen performs well on another pc then the problem possibly lies with the video card.

Thank you for your replies. I did disconnect it and HOOK up another monitor and it works fine, so I GUESS I'll have to find out what is wrong with this monitor. Thank you. You're very welcome Darlene, I'm just sorry I couldn't come up with a more specific response.

Thank you for getting back to us once you'd diagnosed your problem.

Solve : Computer freezing during startup?

Answer»

Have a problem, can't figure it out.

About 2 years ago I build my own COMPUTER. It has an intel gbf 865 motherboard, 512mb of ram and a intel 2.4 P4.

The problem I am getting is that sometime the computer will freeze druing startup, I mean even before any of the menus appear. So I know it's not do to windows XP. Other times it will shut off during startup. once or twice I got a thermal error when The computer restarted, but when I checked the temps using the bios and intel active monitor there were all within the default ramge. All the fans are working normally. Twice the computer froze while I was browsing the net. That might be do to windows. But the main problem is with starting up.

Any Ideas what it could be?Re-check all your connections including but not limited to CPU; vid card ; HDD and optical drives ; keyboard and mouse ; and RAM...

The problem is that thermal warning has to be caused by something...even though all fans are running it still makes me wonder.I checked all the connection already. There fine, thats why I can't figure out whats wrong, Why would a thermal error prevent the computer from starting up but then not show up on the bios or intel active monitor?

The error would occur one second later I would restart the computer and check the temps and they would all be in rangeCarefully remove that CPU, clean it properly and treat it with Arctic Silver thermal compound...
Re-seat it and see if this makes a DIFFERENCE...Thanks will try that, but can it be something ELSE, I more worried about the freezing during startup. Shouldn't a thermal error cause it it switch off?Sure it could...it could also cause the system to hang.
Eliminating a HARDWARE component as faulty is usually a good place to start though...

patio. 8-)Quote

Carefully remove that CPU, clean it properly and treat it with Arctic Silver thermal compound...

BUYING a new cooler is the better solution. A cooler that comes with a thermal patch, that is.

It takes skill and experience to add thermal paste, if you mess up, you might be in a worse situation than you were in before.I reseated the CPU and applied the thermal gel, but still have the same problem, can it be due to the Power Supply?Quote

Specs are

2.4 P4
512mb Ram
128MB Gforce 5200 Graphic Card
DVD-rom
CD Burner
2 Westen Digital HD 40GB eachThat'd be a bit risky. Anything more powerful?Or you could temporarily remove one HDD and both optical drives and take it thru it's paces to see if it still freezes...if it does not then you can safely assume it is underpowered...

Solve : HDD Noise?

Answer»

I have been looking for the answer to this for a few days now without any luck. I'll start at the begining - I had a 80GB Deskstar HDD that came with my computer about 2 - 3 years ago and it started making these noises so i decided i would replace it as it was proboably failing. I then purchased a "250GB Hitachi Deskstar 7200 Rpm 8MB Cache PATA Drive", (just the other day) put it into my computer and installed VISTA and then it started making the same noise as before however it was a deaper tone and slightly louder. I don't know if it is just the drive but my 80GB drive didnt make the noise untill not long before i decided to replace it. The noise is a sort of clicking really fast, it doesnt sound really nasty but i am worried that a brand new hard drive is going to fail me.
Thanks for any help, Sam.I forgot to mention i was on the Hitachi site and was listening to the noises that would be a failing drive but does not really resemble any of them.back up any IMPORTANT dat if there is any on the drive

down load "HDD Health" from here:-http://www.panterasoft.com/
and use it to test your drive

stating an obvious but sometimes missed item, check that there are no cables touching any fans as this can ALSO make a noise. this can often happen when closing the cover and the cover pushes a cable onto a fan.
most drives I have heard make a ticking noise is on its way out, the pickup/recording head or heads are hitting the center spindle, think of it as an old record player which when it comes to the end of a record gets stuck in the middle and keeps going around there. a good write up about hard drives can be seen here:-http://supportpcs.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=156&Itemid=30

if you have just purchased?
it return it as soon as possible.
some drive warranties are for a year some three others can be for five years.
Well i think i'll just return it and get a replacement, do you think i will need to wipe the drive of the OPERATING system etc? because i really can't be bothered with the hastle.
Cheers Sam.I would wipe it.O.K i have taken the HDD back and replaced it with the same one only new. The noise is still there, maybe it is just the type of drive but im pretty sure ive never hear this noise from a hard drive. I started to think maybe it is the fan but after closer inspection it is definatly the hard drive. Is there any chance that other or "old" hardware could cause a problem, and also i have installed vista on is and when i use the start menu it flickers white and yellow from time to time and not as fast as before . Any help, ideas or advice would be much appreciated because im lost.
Cheers SamHave you ran a error check yet .... if its clicking its failing ......

1. Start

2. Run

3. chkdsk

Tony are you convinced the noise does come from the hard drive?

can you unmount the drive out of the computer box/case, then connect the molex power plug, ide or sata cables, sit it on a pad of paper or foam, then start up the computer, eaving it out of the computer case and see if the noise is still there,

other things that can cause clicking are a bent or broken fin on a cooling fan, a cable touching a rotating fan,

there are hard drive pads and flexible fittings available which are fitted between the drive and the mounts which might cut out any vibrationsThanks guys, i am just going to go with the flow. After doing a disk check and i found no errors and also pulling out my drive it is definetly the drive and not the fan, graphics card fan or anything else, i will just keep the reciept somewere safe and hope nothing goes rong. I have got some other questions to ask about my graphics card etc but i take it i have got to start a new thread or maybe go to software (about what games i can play). Honestly thanks for the help guys!

Solve : Seeking advice on random pc crashes?

Answer»

Hi, I hoped to get some help on a problem i've been having with my computer.
The last month or so my computer has been randomly crashing,
This does seem to happen after i pc has been on for long time, 8 hours or so but that might just be coincidence.
My monitor TURNS off to power saving mode, all sound stops and the LCD on my keyboard won't change from keys(logitech G15). I'm forced to restart pc manually, this has happened about 5 times this month, may not sound like much but this is a big problem as i need a perfectly stable computer.
I've had the computer for about 8 months with this never happening so i'm hoping it's software related and not faulty hardware..
My first thoughts were it must be overheating but all the temperatures are low, 45 degrees on cpu and 60 for gpu, which apparently is perfectly normal for 8800gtx.
Steps i've taken is monitoring the temperatures, checking no power saving options are on. updating all drivers and running anit-virus, spyware checks and disc defragments, other than this problem pc runs perfectly.

case: antec 900
CPU: Intel E6600 Core2Duo 2.40GHz
motherboard: EVGA NF680i
ram: Corsair TwinX 2GB DDR2 6400(800mhz)
hard drive: 250G Samsung SATA2 7200
OP: Windows xp home
GPU: 8800gtx
PSU: OCZ 700W GameXStream
Monitor: Dell E228WFP 22"

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I've be so thankful for some help as SOONER or later i'm going to lose something important from this.
If not does anyone know where else i might get help with this?I made the computer myself so no can't get any support from manufacture.
Cheers!

Computers only 9 months old, i did a quick dust 5 months ago and only see a very small amount of dust as a layer so i don't think it WOULD be this, but what would be the most likely place for a short circuit to happen from dust? around the unused connectors?

No the USB are all good also to confirm it's not that the monitor connects to GPU.

I'll try a memtest, check the errors and BIOS power savings you spoke off and update shortly,
thank you allif you take it slow and easy, in some order and dust the fluff of the fan, try and get into the actual fins of the cooling blocks as they can get chocked, another good tool to use is cpu-z if you run that errors in cpu and ram can be seen. if the time is about regularly the same every time it happens it could still point to some timed setting in acpi or a power saving in the bios

good luckTurn off the power managment CRAP, it just EATS up memory. Get rid of that and you should solve the problem right there

Ok,

My problem is that Im getting these blue lines running across my monitor, they flicker and they look just like those system lines you see on steroes showing like the bass levels and such when a song is playing...but they are running horizontal across my monitor like little mountains.

The problem comes and goes but it has been staying all messed up longer and long since it started a week ago or so.

What Ive done thus far:

new display drivers are installed.

I have a Toshiba SATELLITE here is my dx file.

Alan <>< Try resetting the resolution and refresh rate.

Since you have a laptop; did you drop it?is the problem with youre LCD screen on the laptop or is it a second montior that is conected to the laptop?
Ive never dropped it, no, its gotten banged around in its case sliding off my seat like twice, but that was negligable...

how would i reset the refresh rate?

and yes it is with with LCD not an external monitor....

question: can toshibas hook up to external monitors? i see PEOPLE at work with dells with a set up to use an external monitor...Yes. You must have a VGA connector on the back side of the computer. Then you need to configure it in Display Properties.

Laptop monitors can be very sensitive. You may have knocked loose a connector. Try tapping it on the head. Just not too hard, ofcourse.alright now that we know for sure that it is the LCD screen.
there is a ribbon cable that runs between to main base of the laptop and the hinged part of the lid [lcd]
you may have a bad conection there or it could be broken.
you can find the replacments screen for around 250 dollars US on the web . if that is the case
i hope this helps

I have 256mb 133 cl2 in my dell optiplex gx150, 1ghz processor. when i put my new 512mb STICK in (512mb pc133 cl3 3.3v) the computer doesn't boot at all and just beeps once per second. is cl2 interchangable with cl3? if not i can exchange the ram. thanksNot all RAM is interchangeable. Go to www.crucial.com and input you system info and you will see what you need. In your case:

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=OptiPlex+GX150+Series

I am assuming you installed it PROPERLY. The general rule of thumb is to put the largest module in Slot 0 (nearest the CPU). While doing this, remove the old RAM and see if the 512 is recognized CORRECTLY in the BIOS (F2 at boot when you see the Dell logo. If it is add the old chip next to it and repeat the procedure.

It may just be incompatibility, but why BUY the wrong thing? Let us know. Thanks for that site, according to it my computer can only take 512mb of ram (total bummer). Is there a way to change that?

Anyways, both cl2/cl3 are compatible. The only thing is there was no 512 sticks at all on that page you gave me. Why buy the wrong thing? Because I didn't know any better. Now I do. So I guess I'll have to trade my 512 for another 256. It's odd that I have to have 2 sticks and can't use one 512, but whatever. Thanks.Glad you are all fixed up and thanks for posting back. It is fortunate that you will be able to trade for the right thing, and now you know more about RAM.

Solve : Formatting Laptop HDD using Desktop PC??

Answer»

Hello, I have a compaq LAPTOP (I know, compaq, it was a GIFT), that died on me a while back and I'm getting around to fixing. I got a blue screen everytime I booted up, saying something about XP files being corrupted, so I attempted to reinstall and format my Laptop HARD Drive. It hangs up at 20% everytime I do a quick format. It also instantly goes to 20% and pauses, or freezes. I never let it RUN for more than 30minutes at 20% so I'm not sure if its frozen. When I tried to regularly format it , it goes to 4% and does the same thing.

My question is, is it possible to format it using my PC? Being that I have other software besides the XP INSTALL disc to format it with. And if I can format it on my PC would it be worth it, or is my Laptop HDD more than likely fried?Free diagnostics for hard drive at appropriate drive maker's site.

Free RAM test at www.memtest86.com

I would do both.

Is the disc free of scratches? Is it a real Windows CD as Compaqs do not usually ship with these?

Solve : HP 4600 scanner: need software help...?

Answer»

Have 4600 HP Scanner. Installed and used it once with my HP 4500 series laptop. Now fails to work. Would there be a non-compatibility issue with recent Microsoft XP updates? I reloaded 3 times and desktop icon will not bring up program. Button on scanner will allow automatic scanning to pdf files, but I need control options for images.

Don't KNOW where to start. Tips?? Thanks, DennisWhere to start?

Current drivers/sowftware from HP:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN&product=303777&dlc=en#

FAQ for that product:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/solveCategory?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=303777&os=228&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

Contact HP directly info on the right side of page under "Other support options"

GX-1, thank you for taking the time to offer assistance. I went through the sites you listed, downloaded a missing Active X component and downloaded HP's diag. software. Used their diag. of my computer which last SAID EVERYTHING was installed OK and complete.

I click on desktop icon for scanner and it does not "find" the scanner software. A few other oddities persist as well. I just un-installed absolutely everything....again.

This afternoon I will re-install the software again, hoping the now-present hp diag. will monitor it all.

DennisIf that doesn't work, don't hesitate to contact their support by e-mail or phone. Others have reported them to be helpful. I would be interested as to what the problem was, when this is all resolved. Thanks again. Well, I just reloaded >everything< once again after one little updage from hp. I can make it work now. However, their desktop icon/shortcut, "hp Director," which is their scanner starting point, won't come up. Double click, my hard drive works about 15 seconds, and nothing. But if I double click on their companion icon, hp Photo imaging, I get their, "photo gallery, etc.," software and I can successfully access the scanner there.

I think it is just not right yet.

Don't know why the basic Director shortcut will not work.

Have not called them yet. Was trying to do all my homework first.

DennisWell, now that I did everything I could here, I took your other advice and used the hp site contact info. Went into their Cisco on-line, "chat," with their tech.

The short story is...they have an incompatability issue between that scanner's software and MicroSoft/InternetExployer. Especially, (or maybe only) IE version 7. What I was seeing all along was just what many, many other scanner users were seeing with their model 4600.

Apparently, when I double clicked on the shortcut, it did bring it up, just hidden. So the work-around is to hit alt and space, minimize, then, "restore," that program once it is visable in the lower screen bar.

Works. Long version though.

He did COMMENT that downloading their scanner software version 7 would make it work right, but that software was a generic, or for another scanner model, but is compatable. With it, Director disappears and another icon name appears.

I'll stick with the work-around for now.

Thanks again; sometimes a kick in the right direction is all this stuff requires.

DennisI am glad you got the issue resolved. Thanks for posting back.

Hey, i have had a problem for some time with my speakers and I finaly decided to come here for some help.
Well, a month ago we had installed a new router/ inserted new wireless cards for router
AND then borrowed some new speakers from my brother. They were the exact same as my old ones but i blew the others out.
Anyways, ever since then weird things happen randomly when I play sound for a while. Whenever I play songs on Itunes, or ANY other media player, AND when i view videos, my speakers RANDOMLY will start screeching and the sound of the screech will loop LOTS of times. Not only that, but my WHOLE computer will lag, and it bugs the *censored* out of me because I do ALT+CTRL+DEL and it takes about 2 minutes for it to be active. My computer used to be very fast, it still is, however whenever the speakers scream, it gets a lot slower. Sometimes the sound will cut right out after minutes of screeching.
ALSO my sound QUALITY now has gone down drastically. My music sounds a lot more skippy, and rough. Keep in mind, I do not blast my music at all when my speakers screech. It is purely RANDOM. I also have tried unplugging my speakers and inserting my headphones into a different sound jack (as well as the same) and they screech as well after a random time period.

I have ran virus scans, and spyware scans FULLY on my computer and it is clean. I'm not quite sure what to do and I do not want to get my hard drive wiped. Can anybody save me a few bucks here?

Thanks,

Brandon
You should inspect your hardware for burnmarks and the like. Are all fans working?

See to it that you have the latest drivers installedOk, I most likely will.

I am very sure my fans work fine. If they don't or if I need something due to burnmarks, would I lose everything on my computer? And is it expensive?

I'm unexperienced with this stuff, thats why I am here lol.Well, that heavily depends on what would be damaged. But I just want you to carefully inspect the inside of your system case and see if you can find any oddities.

Have you updated all your drivers?

And have you tried to disable the onboard videocard and use an expansion card videocard to see if the problem continues to reproduce? My drivers have been all updated. I'm not quite sure how to do the last thing you said about disabling the onboard and adding an extensionRefer to your mainboard manual on how to access the BIOS and disable the onboard AC '97 soundcard and buy an expansion card in the STORES, turn of your PC, take ESD into account and install the soundcard. Turn on the PC and install OEM drivers.hmm,
i would say you are having a problem with heat.
the AMD's run hot and good cooling is a must.
what type of manin board do you have and what type of case.
also what other programs are you using when this happens?
with the heat and the load on the cpu you can have some really great crashes

Solve : The problem of CD writer?

Answer»

Yesterday i placed a new CD writer in my computer, but now it starts making a problem. When i start my computer the screen comes up that the floppy disk fail and the OPTION for me to press F1 to continue and Del to setup. i've tried to press many times but the screen is still the same. all i mean is the window xp doest show up. You didn't configure the jumper configuration or you knocked loose the IDE cable. How can i configure the jumper configuration? thanks for giving some idea.Check the CD Burner's documentation for correct jumper settings. It's best to put it on the second IDE channel and set it as master. The jumper settings might also be on the back of the drive, somewhere near the actual jumper.you will also NEED to check the controller cable for floppy drive.
most main boards have the floppy controller and the IDE controller next to each other and when you plug the Cd drive cable it knock the floppy cable loose.
the correct way to setup a cd drive is to set it up on the second IDE controller.
And set it tp Master. { if you look at the back of the cd drive you should see a jump and the marking of M, S, CS
M WOULD be Master S would be slave CS would be cable select.
If you have a hard/zipdrive or other type of IDE DEVICE on the second IDE controller .
you will need to check the jumper setting on them too.
If it is set to CS and all you would need to do is set the cd to CS too .
Well that should be clear as mud to a newbie.

How about if we get all the details on the hardware - model numbers, what is in the computer and some history?

Solve : No sound after installing new hard drive?

Answer»

I have just recently installed a new hard drive and reinstalled windows xp home edition on it, and now I have no sound at all. How can I sort this out?You have to install drivers for your sound card for it to work. What is the computer or motherboard make and model? Do you have an add-on sound card?

You probably need other motherboard drivers as well. My computer is made by Packard Bell and my Motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-8SIML. I think i would just have a standard sound card, no add-on sound card or anything.

Solve : SCSI SATA Compatibility problem?

Answer»

Hi,
I would like ideas for solving the following issue.
I am putting together this WinXP X64 system, on an ASUS M2NPVMX with a AMD x2 5200 processor
a WD 160GB SATA HD, and a pioneer DVD.
I INSTALLED the operating system and before adding anything else I added a SCSI raid adapter
Adaptec 2120S and 300GB SCSI hard disk. Now the system goes through the USUAL scsi
controller stuff completes all the checks but when its about to boot it hungs.
I remove the SCSI hard disk leave the controller it boots fine.

Just to check I repeated the process on my older PC (IDE drives, WINXP) and it worked
absolutely fine, I even formatted the SCSI hard disk and everything.
Any ideas why the machine does not boot??Any error messages when installing the SCSI adapters ? ?

If the SCSI drive has an OS installed you may have a ton of hiccups...Hi, thanks for your reply,
no OS system on the drive and no ERRORS messages during the SCSI adapter installation.
Thanks
basilWell since it is fine with the drive disconnected and there are no errors then it's either the drive itself or the card is failing...
Unfortunately the only way to test this would be to install the drive on another controller card and or try the card and drive in another machine.

My adapter won't power up the laptop anymore

How do I KNOW if it is the adapter that's broken and not the bit on the inside of the laptop the adapter plugs into?about the only way to tell is to get a known good power adapter and see if your laptop starts to charge.... I think most laptops have the same/similar CHARGERS, so anyone with a laptop should be able to loan you theirs.

Hope that helps.there are different adaptors, quite a few.
Take the laptop to a PUTER repair store if u "have to" they should have something to test it out, just don't let them sell u an adaptor for over 20.00 or so, get a model name/number if u can then check out prices on ebay or something 1st*How old is the laptop?thanks for answering

I won't be able to get to a PC shop for some time to come.
Has anyone GOT any idea if I can buy a battery charger, rather than relying on the adapter, LIKE maybe something I can slot the battery into to charge, you know?
It's just that if I do have to in the end buy a new laptop all together then I'd have to take everything off the old one and put them to the new one, and I've only got 30 mins left on battery.

Solve : Help Please!?

Answer»

About two months ago I switched my video card from a GeForce Fx5200 to a Radeon X800 XT. Everything is fine with regards to gaming performance but I've noticed a fairly bothersome issue in the video playing department. With my GeForce, absolutely every type of video worked but unfortunately for me, the same cannot be said with my x800 xt. While most HIGH quality videos I download work fine, most video's that play in Internet Explorer (like CNN news clips, sports clips... anything that's pretty much embedded) are unwatchable because instead of normal color schemes, all I see is bright pink and lime green colors and some blue/purple. The video is playing fine in that I can make out the shapes of people and the WHATNOT but the colors are extremely skewed. It kind of looks like those scrambled channels from back in the day where you could kinda make out what was going on but the colors were so messed up that you couldn't watch it. Anyways, I have an online lecture that I NEED to watch this evening and I just can't seem to fix this problem. I have all the CODECS I need (I think) since DVD's other downloadable high quality content work just fine.

Any help would be appreciated and THANK you in advance.

Good Day.

Since your computer is newly purchased the chances of somthing being wrong with your hardware are less , but still first could you tell us what firewall are you using? Also the make/model of the computer and flavour of Windows installed.I'm going to say phone the company tell them you think your power supply unit is busted claim on your warranty , 6 to 7 years later bingo you have your computer working again..... it could as you SAID also be other things .....

Cpu overheating

HEATSINK fan

and your actual CPU ....

maybe the power SWITCH is not well attached to the
motherboard, etc...

your motherboard could also be getting hot ........ but i think its best if you claim on a warranty as a faulty and its free

Solve : Alarm goes off in computer... what is it??

Answer»

Sometimes when I boot up and turn on a game there is an alarm that will go off a minute or two into playing. It sounds "High-Low-High-Low..." and does not stop until i restart the computer.

My computer is running 3.0GHz Pentium 4 and an ATI RADEON 9800 Pro
As far as air flow and heat dissipation, the computer is on the desktop by the window with some noisy fans (good or not i don't know but they SURE aren't stealthy)

This happens only sometimes, after a reboot it usually doesn't happen again for as long as i have the computer on. If you have any idea what this might be please tell me so i can address the problem. Heat alarm i suspect...if those fans are noisy they are probably getting ready to fail.]

I also would guess it's the fan on the vid card that is failing.

Replace it.

patio. 8-)What are your system temperatures, fan speeds and voltages?

Are you using a temperature/voltage monitoring PROGRAM?

If so, make certain the monitoring program is properly configured .I was kinda thinking it was a heat alarm of some sort as well but i don't really know much about heat management other than the fact that you need fans or stuff melts

Thank you for the quick response and the help but i still need to clarify some things.

@ Patio: Well the fans have always been noisy but what do you mean by "replace it." Are you talking the whole video card or just the video card fan? And if so, where would i get a replacement video card fan?

@ Raptor: Temps, speeds and voltages... where do i find that info? Do you have any links that might help me learn a bit about heat management or COULD you recommend a monitoring program you mentioned?

Thank you very much guys, please tolerate my n00bishness.

-Kendizzlei don't suppose your motherboard has some odd system alarm to tell you your motherboard bios battery is failing???
just a thought.

I one had a motherboard yesr ago that ACTUALLY spoke to tellyou stuff like that, I was quite suprised at the time.

steveQuote

@ Raptor: Temps, speeds and voltages... where do i find that info? Do you have any links that might help me learn a bit about heat management or could you recommend a monitoring program you mentioned?

The BIOS or monitoring software that usually comes with the mainboard driver CD.

Any decent computer store in your area will sell replacement fans...have you isolated which ones are noisy yet ? ?

patio. 8-)Ok i got out my mobo CD and installed the monitoring software (i didn't even know it was there [smiley=embarassed.gif] )

Here's some of the info it's giving me:
System Temp: 30 C
CPU Power Supply Temp: 49 C
CPU Temp: 69 C

Mobo Chipset Fan speed: 5625 RPM
OTES Fan Speed: 5113 RPM <--- don't know what "OTES" means
CPU Fan Speed: 3013 RPM

Now the problem i was originally describing where the alarm would sound after a few minutes playing is because of the CPU Temp getting too high. It got all the way up to 90 C while i was running a particular game.

Now that i know what the problem is (thanks to you nice folks) what can i do to keep the CPU cooler? Should i see about getting a new heatsink or would simply cleaning it help?

Thank you guys so much for helping me figure this stuff out. 90 Celsius - OUCH!

A new heatsink/fan combo and some arctic silver PASTE. See instructions before applying. Don't bother with Arctic Silver. Buy a cooler that has thermal paste pre-applied. Less hassle, more efficiency.

Solve : Looking for some tips on finding a good crt or lcd monitor for gaming?

Answer»

I've been looking all over the internet for a good monitor to REPLACE my 17 inch crt on a 7800GT graphics card.

After researching the pros and cons of lcd monitors I keep thinking that crt is the better way to go for gaming. First of all it seems that most lcd's have a 5:4 aspect ratio but many games are optimized for a 4:3 aspect ratio, then if you are not running the lcd monitor at its native resolution then the picture quality SUFFERS as well as not getting the correct ratio.
That's a big problem for me because I run many games at different resolutions, Half-life2 at 1280-1040, Fear at 1024-768, for example. The problem is some games don't run well on my system at higher settings, so if I got a lcd with a max res at 1600-1200 then many games I have would suffer from low fps. With all these problems I don't really understand why lcd's have become so popular, yes you get more vibrant colors and a much sharper picture at its native res but any other res above or below would be crappier for the quality as well as giving you picture that's not scaled properly and I'm a perfectionist when it comes to having the proper ratio.

I'm hoping somebody with more knowledge on this could point me in the right direction of either a good crt monitor or lcd 20 inches and up. Quote from: Greenmachine on September 19, 2007, 11:38:19 PM

The 7800 GT is probably the reason why you can't play games at 1600x1200. Upgrade it for better performance.

That's the first rookie mistake everyone makes when they think of upgrading to LCD.
NO, the picture quality does NOT suffer if you switch to another resolution. It suffers from sharpness, in the exact same way that it would on a CRT.
I want to make this very clear - there is NO difference between a CRT and an LCD in terms of resolutions. Anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't have both an LCD and a CRT.

Quote from: Greenmachine on September 19, 2007, 11:38:19 PM
With all these problems I don't really understand why lcd's have become so popular, yes you get more vibrant colors and a much sharper picture at its native res

What problems? The only thing that bothers you is that the resolution won't fit 100% perfect to the monitor.
And as I've said, not only is that not true, but the quality is going to be IDENTICAL to that on your CRT.
You want to run a game at 1280x1024 INSTEAD of the native resolution? It will look EXACTLY the same as it would on your CRT.

LCDs have much more than Vibrant Colors and Sharpness.
LCDs are the next generation of monitors. They have every possible pro and only a single con, which doesn't really exist anymore aswell.

Quote from: Greenmachine on September 19, 2007, 11:38:19 PM

Right now you can get a 22" LCD for around 250$. That's an amazing value, and around 24" in CRT size.

When you finally recieve it, make sure you don't look directly at it.. it will be too pretty. Resolution and refresh rates are all that need to concern you. Make sure the card and monitor are capable of the resolution and refresh rate you want to use.Man just a buy 42" LCD TV and game on that, its the shiz I tell you!! Plus I can download movies and watch them on my couch, not in my comp chair, you will be happier with thatQuote from: Greenmachine on September 19, 2007, 11:38:19 PM

Please don't turn this DISCUSSION into a farse, patio.

Looking at two monitors and seeing that LCDs have the same picture quality as CRTs at multiple resolutions is something that can be done by anyone without research. It is no different then seeing wether my monitor has a silver outline or a dark outline.. no research needed.Jess607 a LCD screen only have one native resolution. To display any other resolution it needs to use interpolation, which basically means it scales the number of dots used to display one pixel up or down. Some screens interpolate better than others, but the result is never perfect. The best image quality will always be at the native resolution of the screen, period. That you're not able to see the result of this interpolation is just your blessing (or curse).

Ohh and LCD monitors isn't t the next generation of monitors, it is the current generation. The next generation will be OLED or FED.Quote from: Deerpark on September 25, 2007, 10:10:16 AM

I only know what I can see, and that's that the quality of the picture is identical to that of a CRT. I have never used the native resolution of any of my LCDs, for anything.

And I believe that the next generation display panel TECHNOLOGY will be SED.Sony and Samsung calls it FED,
Canon and Toshiba uses SED,
and Motorola likes NED.

But it's basically the same thing.

Solve : Computer cannot detect flash drive?

Hi there!

My flash drive cannot be viewed when I insert it in the USB port. One can see its icon on the tool bar that it has been inserted but cannot be seen when I explore My Computer. I can only explore its contents when I do the following:

Clicking Manage
Clicking Storage
Clicking Disk management

After this I can access all the files in it as well as copying, cutting and pasting.

I don't like doing it this way, I want it to WORK the way it was working. It has just started recently to behave like this but on other COMPUTERS it works normally. I think it is something to do with registry and I am not good at twiking with the registry.

Solve : Driver Missing: Detectives Stumped On Whereabouts?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

Thanks for looking at this situation here.

I'm looking for a driver that I cannot find at any of the manufactorer's WEBSITES.

In Device MANAGER, I have an exclamation showing next to an Audio Driver.

Driver Info:
Bus 0, Device 27, Function 0 Intel 82801FB ICH6 - High Definition Audio Controller [B-1]

Motherboard Info:
Asus PTGD1-LA (Socket 775)

Desktop Info:
HP Pavillion a1240n

Intel's Website: Nothing
Asus's Website: Nothing
HP's website: Nothing

All of these websites do not provide me any downloadable driver for this FSB Chipset.
The original Recovery partition was removed apparently a couple years ago and the whole computer installed with a XP Pro.

Does anyone know of another resource that I can use on the Internet? Am I searching incorrectly?

Thanks again for your time & any helpful advice.I couldn't readily identify it on the HP site. Frankly I wouldn't even try anywhere else, but would contact HP TECH support. Here is the contact info:

i could publish the serial but im guessing im alowed to :-/UPDATE: MISSING DRIVER FOUND IN SECLUDED LOCATION!!![/b]

I went to www.DriverGuide.com
This is an ABSOLUTELY incredible website & I say that as a website builder & administrator!
I chose the Free membership but plan to upgrade to their very, very, low-priced Plus or Pro membership.

If you want the solution then SEARCH using this information:

Manufacturer = Intel
Device Type = Sound
Operating Systems = WinXP
File Name = kb888111xpsp2.exe (Driver)
Driver Version = 82801FB ICH6 6.1.22.0

Thank You GX1_Man & yugub for taking of your valuable time to reply.
It was greatly appreciated & your response is what helped me find my solution
Hope you both have a Happy Thanksgiving!!Personally i would never pay for a driver nor a site that promoted access to one....but that's me.

Solve : Sound crackles while gaming?

Answer»

When playing certain games, ie Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 2, and FMS (flight model simulator) I get a crackling when in a airplane. Something to do with the looping of a wav sound I suppose. Tried different speakers and new drivers but nothing WORKED. Any ideas?Has it always been this way? If not, what preceeded this? What hardware? WHaere did you get the drivers you installed? Are there game updates? Is it a legit version?

Details, Details......

See below.

Sorry thought I had my specs in my sig. I have a Shuttle XPC, integrated soundcard. Running XP Pro. Drivers came with the shuttle, I tried to upgrade but they are the newest it says. This has been happening ever since I had this computer, Battlefield 1942 was the first game I noticed it in. Also it's not when I'm just in the game, it happens while in a plane, car, or sometimes full automatic fire. All games are legit and updated with latest patches. My friend has a shuttle (different model) and it doesn't HAPPEN to him.

edit: the sounds uses Realtek ac97 driversFew suggestions:

  • Install the latest drivers
  • Set your sound settings to "software"
  • Get a decent soundcard. A SoundBlaster Audigy 4 or better, preferably. Guaranteed to stop any popping..
Thanks raptor, I have the newest drivers, and BF1942 and FMS don't allow you to select audio options. My only pci slot (shuttle) is free anyway. I'll just buy a nice soundcard. Thanks for the help!

edit: I don't really know ANYTHING about sound cards, would the Sound Blaster SB0570 Audigy SE work? Or should I spend the extra $ for the Sound Blaster Audigy 4 SB0610? Thanks! Are you sure you can't set them to software mode? I used to have some popping with my onboard soundcard, software mode reduced it, buying an Audigy 4 completely resolved it.FMS probably didn't have the most developing in the world, it has limited options, you can really only control volume; BF1942 all I can see is hardware accelerator, which is unchecked; and as for BF2, it's not installed on my pc anymore, heh. I'm pretty sure it's just that this onboard is crap, kinda a shame too considering gamers rave over the XPC. ThanksI found newer drivers at majorgeeks.com, it reduced the crackling pretty well. I think I can live with it. Thanks for all your help, although I have one more question. Would any sound blaster audigy soundcard allow you to mix in another computer's sounds? ie I have two desktops, I would like both to come through one set of speakers. I currently USE a KDM switch to switch back and forthe, but I would love to mix the two into one signal. ThanksI once asked at a sound store and they said there were no such devices... But that was for 5.1 sound, for stereo you could probably use a stereo splitter cable?I've tried that, bought a airplane headphone splitter, it didn't work. Thanks though, I asked the guys at geek squad in best buy... he didn't really help any.Quote

Solve : Gateway M520 motherboard VGA issue?

Answer»

I was wondering if anyone knew how to make this gateway M520 laptop motherboard i have run the CRT i have hooked to it as the primary. i do not have the LCD SCREEN for it to switch it from the primary, and when i install video drivers for the intel extreme graphics 2 GPU, it tries to display on the LCD, but theres no LCD to display to. is there any way to fix this? i only have the laptop motherboard, its stock 512mbs of ram, and its stock 2.53 celeron d prescott-256 CPU, a 37gb fujitsu HARD drive i had LAYING around, its 5400rpm. ATA6, with 8mb cache. If it helps, the monitor i have is a HP mx70 that i FOUND on the curb, its fully functional, i have also tried the '94 gateway 2000 monitor i have here, no go. I need to figure out how to make the VGA out the primary video out, or atleast EXTEND my desktop onto this monitor then make it the primary.

i have searched gateways crap up and down and found nothing, this is there site, a link to what the laptop once was:

i uploaded an HTML report of it for reference to any hardware you might need to know about.

Once you get it fixed, you must promise "I will not play with my BIOS". oh, believe me, i won't mess around again after it gets fixed, i'll just get info on how to fix this on the gateway website.Quote

Have you tried what i suggested above ? ?

I'm relatively sure this is exactly what the Gateway people are gonna tell you to do.I can't remember, but i'm pretty certain that is the order it is in. I know for sure that the cd-rom is the first in priority.

If it is in that order what else could be the problem?Bad CDROM drive, bad disk, other changes you made to BIOS but may not be aware of.....it might just be the disk because when i turn my computer on with the disk in the cd drive it makes noises like its spinning but fails to boot. HOWEVER, the disk isn't too dirty or scratched and i burned the iso at a slow speed so that it would burn it correctly. I even tried a disk repair machine and it still didn't work.

Do you have another bootable CD you can try? If not, try the diagnostic software on the CD that came with your computer or diagnostic firmware in the BIOS. If there are no diagnostic tools, try using a CD-ROM drive cleaning kit or replacing the optical drive with a known good one.Unless done properly a burned ISO is normally not bootable...
What program did you use ? ?I burned two, one for a linux distribution (can't remember the name of it), and one for an operating system called freedos (just like good old dos). I downloaded the bootdisk ISOS and burned them, they are supposed to boot now (it says on the WEBPAGE), maybe i'm forgetting something...

I don't have any other bootable cds to try.

Try this with a borrowed Official MS Windows CD...

I still think the ISO's weren't created properly but that's just me.
