The funcation of the secretion of prostate glands is toA. inhibit sperm activityB. attract spermsC. stimulate sperm activityD. none of these.

Answer» Correct Answer - C
The Prostate gland is a single large gland that surrounds the urethra. It produces a slightly alkaline, mailky secretion which forms `25%` of the volume of semen. It processes citric acid, enzymes (acid phosphatase, amylase, pepsinogen) and prostaglandins). Secretion of the prostate gland nourishes and activites the speratozoa to swim.

The given figure illustrates montly changes in the human ovary during the reproduction cycle. Which of the following statements most accurately describes each structure?A. Before puberty, the oocyte (A) does not start the process of meiosis.B. The hormone produced by by structure (B) causes thinning of the uterine cervical mucus to allow passage of sperms.C. During ovulation, structure (C) stays at the interphase between meiosis I and meiosis II.D. The hormone produced by structure (D) stimulates the pituitary gland to secrete luteinising hormone.

Answer» Correct Answer - B
At birth, ovaries contain some 2 million follicles each with an ovum that has begun meiosis but is arrested in prophase of the first meiotic division. At this stage , the ova are called primary oocyte (labelled A). Primary oocyte completes first meiotic division to produce secondary oocyte (labelled C) Which gets arrested in the metaphase of meiosis II. The Graffian follicle (labelled B) secretes estrogen which causes thinning of cervicl mucus to allow easy passage of sperms through the cervix. Progesterone is secreted by corpus luteum (labelled D). It stimulates further development of uterine epithelium and mammary glands. It is also required for maintenance of pregnancy.
418.

In an experiment, sperms removed from epiddymis of a man were added in a dish containing appropriate media and oocyte. No fertilisation was seen. However, when sperms from epiddymis were directly placed in uterus of an ovulated woman, she became pregnant. These observations suggest thatA. the sperms need to travel some distance to attain fertilising abilityB. the oocyte secretes some biochemicals or factors which help sperms to fertiliseC. the hormones in the female body help sperms to attain fertilising abilityD. the contents of female reproductivity tract interact with sperms and activate them for fertilisation.

Answer» Correct Answer - D
Although spermatozoa are said to be "mature" when they leave the epiddymis, their activity is held in check by multiple inhibitory factors secreted by the genital duct epithelia. Therefore, when they are first expelled in the semen, they are unable to perform fertilisation of the ovum. However, on coming in contact with the fluids of the female genital tract, multiple changes occur that activatethe sperm for the final processes of fertilisation. The secretions of the female genital tract remove coating substances deposited on the surface of the sperms particularly those on the acrosome. Thus, the receptor sites on the acrosome are exposed and sperm becomes active to penetrate the egg. This phenomenon of sperm activation in mammals is known as capacitation.
