i] Heating elements of electrical heating devices is made up of an alloy rather than a pure metal. Give two reasons. ii] Four resistors of 2Omega each are joined end to end to form a square. Calculate the equivalent resistance of the combination between two adjacent corners?

Answer»

SOLUTION :i] Heating elements of electrical heating devices are made up of an alloy rather than a pure metal because
a] The resistivity of an alloy is more than the resistivity of a pure metal.
b] Alloy does not burn [or oxidize] easily even at higher temperature.
II]
Resistors, `R_(1),R_(2)andR_(3)` are in series, THEREFORE their equivalent resistance is
`R_(s)=R_(1)+R_(2)+R_(3)=2+2+2=6`ohm
Now, `R_(s)andR_(4)` are in parallel, therefore equivalent resistance of the combination between two ADJACENT corners A and D is
`1/R_(p)=1/R_(s)+1/R_(4)=1/6+1/2=2/3`
Therefore, `R_(p)=1.5` ohm

Explain the refraction of light through a glass prism.

Answer»

Solution :(i) When a beam of white light or composite light is refracted through any transparent media such as glass or water, it is split into its component colours. This phenomenon is called as 'dispersion of light'.
(ii) The band of colours is termed as spectrum. This spectrum consists of following colours: Violet , Indigo, Blue , Green , Yellow, ORANGE , and Red. These colours are represented by the acronym "VIBGYOR".
(iii) When white light is refracted by a transparent medium, different angles. That is the angle of refraction is different for different colours.
(IV) Angle of refraction is the smallest for red and the highest for violet.
(v) From Snell's law, we know that the angle of refraction is DETERMINED in term of the REFRACTIVE index of the medium.
(vi) hence, the refractive index of the medium is different for different coloured lights.

For a given heat in liquid, the apparent expansion is more than that of real expansion.

Answer»

Solution :Correct Statement: When liquid is heated in a CONTAINER, first heat is GAINED by container which expands and LEVEL of liquid GOES down, but immidiately liquid receives the heat from container so apparent EXPANSION is liquid.
Real expansion = Expansion of container + Apparent expansion

What are the limitations of enegry that can be obtained from the oceans ?

Answer»

Solution :The energy from the oceans can be obtained mainly in three forms : Tidal energy, Wave energy and OCEAN thermal energy. Some of the important limitations of these forms of energy are as follows :
(i) There are very few places around the world where barrages (or dams) can be built to harness tidal energy. Moreover, the rise and FALL of WATER during high and low TIDES is not enough to generate electricity on a large SCALE.
(ii) The wave energy can be harnessed only at those places where the sea-waves are very strong. The efficiency of power plants based on wave energy is very low. Moreover, the power plants built in oceans or at sea-shores have high cost of installation, corrode easily and need a lot of maintenance.
(iii) A temperature difference of `20^(@)C` (or more) between the surface water of ocean and deeper water is necessary to harness ocean thermal energy. The efficiency of OTEC powerplants which work by utilising ocean thermal energy, is very low. Moreover, it is very expensive to establish OTEC power plants.

Explain the structure and functioning of human eye. How are we able to see nearby as well as distant objects?

Answer»

Solution :The structure and functioning of human eye are as given below
Cornea Cornea is transparent. It is responsible for, most of the refraction of light rays towards the retina.
Iris Iris is a dark, CIRCULAR muscular diaphragm behind the cornea. It gives the eye its colour. It also CONTROLS the pupil size and thus controls the amount of light entering the eye.

Pupil Pupil is surrounded by the iris. It regulates and controls the amount of light entering the eye.
Retina The retina is the innermost layer of the eye. It contains an outer pigmented layer and an inner nervous layer which contains the photo receptors (rods and cones).cone CELLS are coned shaped and rod cells are rod shaped.
Optic nerveThe optic nerve connects the eye to the brain. The nerve fibrescarry impulses from the retina to the visual cortex.
Eye lens The eye lens is made up of a fibrous, jelly-like material. It is transparent and has biconvex structure. It forms an inverted real image of the object on the retina and also separates the aqueous and the vitreous humours.
Vitreous humour Vitreous humour is clear, semi-solid supporting the eye ball.
The eye lens forms an inverted real image of the object on the retina which sends image-electric signals to brain via the optic nerves. The brain reconstructerect image of OBJECTS and MAKE us see as they are. For second part.

Draw a labelled diagram of an electric motor. Explain its principle and working. What is the function of a split-ring in an electric motor?

Answer»

Solution :Principle. Electric motor is based upon Fleming.s left hand rule. When a current carrying conductor capable of free movement is placed in a magnetic field, it EXPERIENCES a mechanical force and begins to MOVE in a direction given by Fleming.s left hand rule.
Construction. A DC motor consist of a single coil ABCD called armature between the pole pieces of a magnet as shown in fig. Armatureconsists of a coil of a large number of turns of insulated wire WRAPPED on a soft iron core. The two ends of the armature are connected to segments `S_(1)` and `S_(2)` of a commutator. The brushes `B_(1)` and `B_(2)` kee their CONTACT with the commutator as it rotates.
Working. A direct current from a battery is passed through armature. The current flows in the coil along ABCD as shown in Fig. The limb AB of the coil experience downwards and CD of the coil experience upward force in accordance with Fleming.s left hand rule. These two equal and opposite forces constitute a couple tending to rotate the coil in clockwise direction. After HALF the rotation, brush `B_(1)` has contact with `S_(2)`

and brush `B_(2)` with `S_(1)`. The direction of the current gets reversed. The current now flows along DCBA instead of along ABCD. Limb DC experiences downward and BA experiences an upward force in accordance with Fleming left hand rule.
The process repeats itself and motion of armature becomes continuous after some time.
Split rings help in reversing the current in the coil after every half rotation.

A car of mass 2000 kg is lifted up a distance of 30 m by a crane is 1 min. A second crane does the same job in 2 min. do the cranes consume the same or different amounts of fuel? What is the power supplied by each crane? Neglect Power dissipation against friction.

Answer»

Solution :`t_(1)=1` MIN =60s, `t_(2)=` min =120s
`W=F_(s)=mgs=5.88xx10^(5)J`
As both CRANES same AMOUNT of work so both consume same amount of fuel.

Define atomic size. Give its unit of measurement. In the Modern Periodic Table what trend is observed in the atomic radius in a group and a period and why is it so ?

Answer»

Solution :• Atomic SIZE is defined as the distance between the centre of nucleus and the outermost SHELL of an ISOLATED atom.
• Atomic radius increases down the group. This is because new shells are being added. This increases the distance between the nucleus and outermost electrons.
• Atomic radius decreases in moving from left to right along a period. This is due to increase in NUCLEAR charge which TENDS to pull the electrons closer to the nucleus and reduces the size of the atom.
