Explain the poem ' Gift of magi ' on the basis of : 1 ) Character sketch of Jim and Della providing an insight into their ‘Selfless attitude’ with relevant evidence from the text 2)• The Economic background of the couple with supporting evidence from the text 3)• The message the writer conveys through the story - ‘The Gift of the Magi’ |
Answer» Explanation: Della and Jim from O. Henry's The Gift of the Magi are a newlywed couple, and Christmas time is approaching. Presents can always be a difficult and stressful thing to figure out. But these newlyweds knew exactly what they wanted to get for each other, they just didn't have the money to buy it. So they each sacrifice the thing that is most precious to them in order to buy something for their spouse. Della sacrifices her beautiful hair only to learn that Jim had bought her combs for her hair. Jim sacrifices his precious watch only to learn that Della has bought him a chain for his watch. This is a story about a selfless couple who knew the true meaning of Christmas. The title of this story comes from the three magi who brought the Baby Jesus great gifts, Della and Jim also gave each other great gifts of selflessness and love. Three Magi Della The Gift of the Magi is told from Della's perspective. We can picture her as a beautiful, fashionable woman. She is described as slender, but other than that the only description we have of her is her hair, which would 'fall about her rippling and shining like a cascade of brown waters'. It is the kinds of hair that could even make the Queen of Sheba's jewels seem worthless. We watch her, a housewife, and her emotions throughout Christmas Eve. She loves her husband very much and thinks the world of him. She doesn't blame him for their small income, even though it has dropped from $30 per week to $20 per week. Instead she feels that he deserves the very best in order to be 'just a little bit near to being worthy of the honor of being owned by Jim'. When she falls into a crying fit, it isn't in sadness for their poor circumstances. It isn't for self-pity. It is because she only has $1.87 to buy her husband a present, and she can't find anything nearly NICE enough with that small amount of money. When she realizes she can SELL her hair to get more money, she only allows 'a tear or two' to splash 'on the worn red carpet'. After happily finding a present for Jim, Della doesn't fret over her hair for herself. She only worries what Jim will THINK. Through this entire story, she is selfless, without a care for herself. She is a good wife, always finding the best bargains, who loves her husband very much. Perhaps she may be SEEN as a little silly 'spinning about' and emotional, but we quickly grow to love her as we see the love that she selflessly feels for her husband. Jim We don't know as much about Jim, since we only see him briefly in The Gift of the Magi. But from Della's perspective, we learn that he is a wonderful man. They had visions of grandeur when he was earning $30 per week, but have started to doubt that grandeur now that Jim's income has dropped. When Della finds a watch chain for Jim's watch, she describes it as possessing 'quietness and value.' She decides this is fitting since Jim also possesses 'quietness and value.' So we can picture him, a QUIET man but one who is worth much due to his fine qualities. To unlock this lesson you must be a Study.com Member. Raj saves15 percent of his income.Raj gets a 10 percent incresae in his salary. If he saves the entire additional amount, What is the increase percent in his savings? |
Answer» Answer: hello mate Explanation: He SPENDS 60% of his income. So, expenditure E1=60xE1=60x, [savings S1=40xS1=40x] His income increases by 15%. So, new income, I2=115xI2=115x Expenditure increases by 5%. So, 5% increase on 60x60x results in new expenditure E2=63xE2=63x So, new savings S2=115x−63x=52xS2=115x−63x=52x So, percentage change in savings can be calculated as: S2−S1S1×100S2−S1S1×100 =52x−40x40x×10=52x−40x40x×10 =30% (Answer)=30% (Answer) 4.6K views View 5 Upvoters Related Questions (More Answers Below) A man spends 60% of his income. Write a story on the topic of HONESTY AND KINDNESS and give a moral |
Answer» Answer: 1. The Lion and the Mouse Never underestimate anyone! Once UPON a time, a lion was taking a blissful nap in the forest. A mouse that was passing by saw the lion and started running up and down the lion for fun. Disturbed from his nap, the lion caught hold of the mouse and THREATENED to kill it. “Please don’t kill me” begged the mouse. “Spare my life and I will repay you for the favour one day”, the mouse whimpered. The lion was amused by the thought of a little mouse HELPING the King of the forest but let the mouse go out of kindness. After a few days, the lion gets caught in a net laid down by a hunter. No matter how hard he tries, the lion fails to free himself from the net. The lion’s roars of frustration and helplessness are recognized by the same mouse to whom the lion showed mercy. The mouse finds the lion and gnaws the net until it comes apart. The lion THANKED the mouse and felt silly for EVER doubting its capabilities to help him. Moral of the story: No act of kindness is ever wasted and no one should be judged based on their appearance. |

Why jesse owens was not given the honour after he broke the Olympic record. |
Answer» Answer: James Cleveland "Jesse" Owens (September 12, 1913 – March 31, 1980) was an American track and field athlete and four-time gold medalist in the 1936 Olympic Games. Owens specialized in the sprints and the long JUMP, and was recognized in his lifetime as "perhaps the greatest and most famous athlete in track and field history".[3] He set three world records and TIED another, all in less than an hour at the 1935 Big Ten track meet in Ann Arbor, Michigan — a feat that has never been equaled and has been called "the greatest 45 minutes ever in sport". He achieved international fame at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany, by winning four gold medals: 100 meters, long jump, 200 meters, and 4 × 100-meter relay. He was the most successful athlete at the Games and, as a black man, was credited with "single-handedly crushing HITLER's myth of Aryan supremacy", although he "wasn't invited to the White House to shake hands with the President, either". The Jesse Owens Award is USA Track and Field's highest accolade for the year's best track and field athlete. Owens was ranked by ESPN as the sixth greatest North American athlete of the 20th century and the highest-ranked in his sport. In 1999, he was on the six-man short-list for the BBC's Sports Personality of the Century. |
