How did languages develop in the sultanate period ?

Answer»

Answer:

The Delhi Sultanate LITERATURE began with the RISE of Persian speaking people to the throne of the Sultanate of Delhi, naturally RESULTED in the spread of the Persian language in India. It was the official language and soon literary works in the language began to APPEAR. Initially Persian literature talked about topics which were familiar to those from Persia. Gradually however as more Indians learnt the language, the literary works began to have a more Indian theme. Amir Khusrav was a noted writer of the period, who was one of the first writers to write Persian literature about events concerning India. His inspiration came from events he saw around, his work soon grew to be appreciated and he became a court poet.

Sanskrit continued to remain an important language of the time, and despite the increasing influence of Persian, it was able to hold its ground. Many preferred Sanskrit poets as they were more established and experienced than those that worked in the new languages. A centre for Sanskrit learning opened at Mithila (north Bihar). It preserved the tradition of classical Sanskrit literature and kept it alive. Sanskrit was however beginning to lose its popularity as an intellectual language, and the Brahmans struggled to FIND patrons to keep it alive.

There was also a significant amount of work taking place in regional languages. Both Sanskrit and Persian were languages which the average person did not understand. Various regional languages flourished and soon literary work in these languages began to take place.

Give an account of the regin of the slave dynasty in long answer

Answer»

ANSWER :

Slave dynasty, (1206–90), LINE of sultans at Delhi, India, that lasted for nearly a century. Their family name was Muiʿzzī. The Slave dynasty was founded by Quṭb al-Dīn Aibak, a favourite slave of the Muslim general and later sultan Muḥammad of Ghūr.Quṭb al-Dīn had been among Muḥammad’s most trusted Turkish officers and had overseen his master’s Indian conquests. When Muḥammad was assassinated in 1206, Quṭb TOOK power in Lahore. He managed to CONSOLIDATE his position in a seesawing war with a rival Slave ruler, Tāj al-Dīn Yildoiz, during which he captured and lost Ghazna. He was eventually confined to being a purely Indian sovereign. He died in 1210 as a result of a polo accident, and the crown shortly passed to Iltutmish, his son-in-law.

By the time of Iltutmish’s accession, the family’s holdings had been severely reduced. Iltutmish, the greatest of the Slave kings, defeated and put to death Yildoiz (1216), restored the Bengal governor to obedience, and added considerable new TERRITORY to the empire, including the Lower Sindh.

After the death of Iltutmish, his able daughter Raziyya attempted to serve as sultan but was defeated by opposing Turkish Slave nobles. After 1246 the sultanate was controlled by Ghiyās al-Dīn Balban, who was to be sultan himself from 1266 to 1287. Under Balban the Delhi sultanate fought off several Mongol invasions. The Slave dynasty ended when Jalāl al-Dīn Fīrūz Khaljī staged a successful coup on June 13, 1290, and brought the Khaljīs to power.

How would you explain the term ‘discrimination’ with reference to caste, creed and gender?

Answer»

Question:

How would you explain the term Discrimination with reference to caste, creed and gender?

Explanation:

Discrimination is the act of making unjustified distinctions between human beings based on the groups, classes, or other categories to which they are perceived to belong.[1] People may be discriminated on the basis of race, gender, age or sexual orientation, as well as other categories.[2] Discrimination especially occurs when individuals or groups are unfairly treated in a way which is worse than other people are treated, on the basis of their actual or perceived membership in certain groups or social categories.[2][3] It involves restricting members of one group from opportunities or privileges that are available to members of another group.[4]

Discriminatory TRADITIONS, policies, IDEAS, practices and laws exist in many countries and institutions in all parts of the world, including territories where discrimination is generally looked down upon. In some places, attempts such as QUOTAS have been used to benefit those who are believed to be current or PAST victims of discrimination. These attempts have often been met with controversy, and have sometimes been called reverse discrimination.

Explain the ways in which caste was used to discriminate against large section of people.

Answer»

Answer:

The caste system in India is the paradigmatic ethnographic example of caste. It has origins in ancient India, and was transformed by various ruling elites in medieval, early-modern, and modern India, especially the Mughal Empire and the British Raj.[1][2][3][4] It is today the basis of affirmative action programmes in India.[5] The caste system consists of two different concepts, VARNA and jati, which may be REGARDED as different levels of analysis of this system.

The caste system as it exists today is thought by some to be the result of developments during the collapse of the Mughal era and the rise of the British colonial regime in India.[1][6] The collapse of the Mughal era saw the rise of powerful men who associated themselves with kings, priests and ascetics, affirming the regal and martial form of the caste ideal, and it also reshaped many apparently casteless social groups into differentiated caste communities.[7] The British Raj furthered this development, making rigid caste organisation a central mechanism of administration.[6] Between 1860 and 1920, the British segregated Indians by caste, granting administrative jobs and senior appointments only to Christians and people belonging to certain castes, especially BRAHMINS and other upper castes.[8] Social unrest during the 1920s led to a change in this policy in places like Bombay and Madras Presidencies.[9] From then on, the colonial administration began a policy of positive discrimination by RESERVING a certain percentage of government jobs for the lower castes. In 1948, negative discrimination on the basis of caste was banned by law and further enshrined in the Indian constitution; however, the system continues to be practiced in India with devastating social effects.

Modern genetic studies on the other hand, show that the caste system was formed around the year 500 AD during the Gupta Period, when intermarrying among different social groups suddenly ceased to be common.[10]

Caste-based differences have also been practised in other regions and religions in the Indian SUBCONTINENT like Nepalese Buddhism,[11] Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism.[12] It has been challenged by many reformist Hindu movements,[13] Islam, Sikhism, Christianity,[12] and also by present-day Indian Buddhism, especially Navayana.[14]

New developments took place after India achieved independence, when the policy of caste-based reservation of jobs was formalised with lists of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Since 1950, the country has enacted many laws and social initiatives to protect and improve the socioeconomic conditions of its lower caste population.
