A major lottery advertises that it pays the winner $10 million. however this prize money is paid at the rate of $500,000 each year (with the first payment being immediate) for a total of 20 payments. what is the present value of this prize at 10% interest compounded annually |
Answer» "The prize money GIVEN by the lottery company is $ 10 million. The first premium is $ 500, 000 PAID immediately. Therefore, the balance to be paid in next 19 years is $ 9500,000. The rate of compound interest is 10%. Therefore the interest value after 19 years is 9500,000 (1 + 10/100) ^19 = 9500,000 X 0.1^19 – 9500,000 = 238592500-9500, 000 = 2290, 92500. The PRESENT value is 2290, 92500+ 9500,000 = 23,85,92500 million. " |

Importance of product design in sustainable manufacturing |

It is manufacturing based on the DFE (design for the ENVIRONMENT) and LCA (life cycle analysis) methods. |
| 20. |
What are the fundamental elements of lean? |
Answer» 1. Value. Value is always defined by the customer’s needs for a specific product. For example, what is the timeline for manufacturing and delivery? What is the price POINT? What are other important requirements or expectations that must be met? This information is vital for defining value. 2. Value stream. Once the value (end goal) has been determined, the next step is mapping the “value stream,” or all the steps and processes involved in taking a specific product from raw materials and delivering the final product to the customer. Value-stream mapping is a simple but eye-opening experience that identifies all the actions that take a product or service through any process. That process can be in design, production, procurement, HR, administration, delivery, or customer service. The idea is to draw, on one page, a "map" of the flow of material/product through the process. The goal is to identify every step that does not create value and then find ways to eliminate those wasteful steps. Value-stream mapping is sometimes referred to as process re-engineering. Ultimately this EXERCISE also results in a better understanding of the entire business operation. 3. Flow. After the waste has been removed from the value stream, the next step is to be sure the remaining steps flow smoothly with no interruptions, delays, or bottlenecks. “Make the value-creating steps occur in tight sequence so that the product or service will flow smoothly toward the customer,” advises LEI. This may require breaking down silo thinking and making the effort to become cross-functional across all departments, which can be one of the greatest challenges for lean programs to overcome. However, studies show that this will also lead to huge gains in productivity and efficiency, sometimes as high as 50-percent improvement or more. 4. PULL. With improved flow, time to market (or time to customer) can be dramatically improved. This makes it much easier to deliver products as needed, as in “just in time” manufacturing or delivery. This means the customer can “pull” the product from you as needed (often in weeks, instead of months). As a result, products don’t need to be built in advance or materials stockpiled, creating expensive inventory that needs to be managed, saving money for both the manufacturer/provider and the customer. 5. Perfection. Accomplishing Steps 1-4 is a great start, but the fifth step is perhaps the most important: making lean thinking and process improvement part of your corporate culture. As gains continue to pile up, it is important to remember lean is not a static SYSTEM and requires constant effort and vigilance to perfect. Every EMPLOYEE should be involved in implementing lean. Lean experts often say that a process is not truly lean until it has been through value-stream mapping at least half a dozen times. |

What is the business environment and explain the external factors which affects the business? |
Answer» External Factors Affecting Business Environment Economic Forces The economic environment can have a major impact on businesses by affecting patterns of demand and supply. Companies need to keep a track of relevant economic indicators and monitor them over time. Income Income indicates a customer’s ability to spend on the products sold by the marketer. The rise in the number of dual income families in several parts of the world, including urban world, has led to the rise in the incomes for such families. This has resulted in higher demand for lifestyle and luxury products. However, marketers should be wary of making generalizations, as customer’s propensity to spend depends on cultural factors as well. Such products, such as dishwashers, that are considered in necessities in Western markets, do not even fall into the consideration set of consumers. Inflation Inflation refers to an increase in prices without a corresponding increase in wages, resulting in lower purchasing power of consumers. When cost of production of products and services is low, they will be sold at lower prices. Inflation RATE is higher when costs of producing products or services go up, or when there is too much money chasing too few supplies, prompting suppliers to raise prices and earn higher profits. High inflation rate decreases REAL wages, i.e. the customer can buy LESS goods with his income because the goods have become costlier. Inflation will reduce the demand for several products because the customer will ration his income on goods. In inflationary times, customers stock items to save themselves from further increase in prices and abandon their favorite brands to buy more ECONOMICAL brands. When costs of production go up, companies should try to withhold increasing prices for as long as possible. In the long RUN, companies will have to look for better methods of production and cheaper inputs so that cost of production can be brought down. |

In supplying private-label footwear to chain retailers, the sizes of a company's margins over direct costs (as reported on p. 6 of each issue of the fir) should be viewed as |
Answer» <P>In supplying private-label footwear to chain retailers, the SIZES of a company's margins over direct costs (as reported on p. 6 of each ISSUE of the FIR) should be viewed as the net profit a company earns on each pair of private-label footwear sold. It shows how much each pair of private-label footwear sold ads to the company's pretax profits, ASSUMING that the company's margins on branded footwear were sufficient to cover all administrative expenses and all interest costs. The gross profit a company earns on each pair of private-label footwear sold. The company received from each pair of private-label footwear sold over and above materials costs and direct labor costs-- these dollars are automatically deposited in the company's RETAINED earnings account and help boost the company's credit rating. Cash that can be used to pay down long-term debt or increase dividend payments or be deposited in the company's retained earnings (to strengthen the company's balance sheet). |

Discuss the importance and role of verbal communication and nonverbal communication |
Answer» Importance of verbal communication :We use verbal communication to inform, whether it is to inform others of our needs or to impart knowledge. Clarification is a key component of verbal communication. Often, we do not articulate ourselves clearly, or our words or actions are misconstrued. Verbal communication helps to clarify misunderstandings and provides missing information. We can use verbal communication to correct a wrong. The power of the words, “I’m sorry,” is often more effective than an action. Verbal communication can also be used as a tool of persuasion. It creates an opportunity for debate, stimulates thought and creativity, and deepens and creates new relationships. Robert M. Krauss in the article, “The Psychology of Verbal Communication,” published in the International Encyclopedia of the Social and Behavioral Sciences in 2002, explains, “A species’ survival depends critically upon its ability to communicate effectively, and the quality of its social life is determined in LARGE measure by how and what it can communicate.”importance if nonverbal communication :Think of how many relationships start with a man and woman making EYE contact across a crowded room. A playful wink tends to be more effective than a well-thought out pick-up-line. Michael Argyle, in his book “Bodily Communication,” identifies five main functions of non-verbal communication: to express emotions, communicate interpersonal relationships, support verbal interaction, reflect personality and perform rituals, such as greetings and goodbyes. Edward G. Wertheim, Ph.D., in his paper, “The Importance of Effective Communication,” details how non-verbal communication interacts with verbal communication. We can REINFORCE, contradict, substitute, complement or emphasize our verbal communication with non-verbal cues such as gestures, expressions and vocal inflection. Avoiding eye contact when we tell someone we love them communicates something far different than do spoken words, just as a bright SMILE when we say congratulations REINFORCES the sincerity of our words. |
