Wood energy: the role of women's unvalued labor

Answer»

Gender issues have been introduced into energy policy considerations as the first round of efforts to mitigate the rural energy crisis (involving noncommercial fuels like WOOD) with improved technology, such as improved stoves, failed because the specific needs of the users (women) were ignored. Models of household energy use continue to consider the household a unit possessing certain aggregate resources. These models continue to be applied to both rural and URBAN areas despite the fact that a gender analysis of labor availability in rural households may be necessary to understand the production and CONSUMPTION of wood fuel and the fact that urban and rural wood fuel use patterns vary considerably. Studies show that the collection, processing, and use of wood fuel is largely a task of women and children who have fewer possible opportunities than men of earning income with their available time. Rural households that collect their own fuel will not have an incentive to invest in an improved stove or more efficient commercial fuels if the time saved by the women from such an investment would not result in more income to the household. Thus, while income plays an IMPORTANT role in sparking a transition from biomass fuels in urban areas, it fails to play such a role in rural areas. Thus, attempts to increase fuel efficiency or fuel switching should focus on increasing women's income-earning opportunities OUTSIDE of the homestead. Studies of leisure also indicate that sustained underinvestment in women's labor-saving devices also reflects a bias towards male rather than female leisure. A transition up the energy ladder is desirable not only to save women's time and improve the environment but also to improve the health of women and children and calls for village-level solutions.

How business activities effect the global warming

Answer»

NASA

Major negative effects of climate change are here now and they're only getting worse, as shown by recent reports from the United Nation's Intergovernmental Panel On Climate Change (IPCC) and the White House among others.

The greenhouse gas emissions that drive warming "now substantially exceed the HIGHEST concentrations recorded in ice cores during the past 800,000 years," the IPCC said. Atmospheric carbon dioxide LEVELS, which primarily come from the burning of fossil fuels, have risen 40% SINCE pre-industrial times.

We've gathered some notable effects of climate change below.

Unless otherwise noted, each effect assumes a temperature rise of 2 degrees CELSIUS (3.6 F) by 2100, a number the IPCC has suggested we are "more likely than not" to exceed, and a sea level rise of 0.5 meters (1.5 feet) by 2100, about the AVERAGE of all the IPCC's most recent climate scenarios. This is a conservative estimate as other studies have suggested that sea level rise will be much greater if climate change continues unmitigated.

A firm produces highly substitute goods can adopt which pricing strategies

Answer»

Substitute goods:

These are goods or products which act as a substitute in place of another similar product. For example, butter and margarine, or Pepsi and Coke.

There are multiple PRICING strategies which may be used for the selling of substitute goods. Like the USE of penetration pricing, economic pricing or PSYCHOLOGICAL pricing. However, the most EFFECTIVE ONE is the penetration pricing strategy.

In this pricing strategy the price is lower, to attract customers. At least initially. Since your the seller of substitute goods, then if your product is less than the demanded good, customers will get attracted to you. Example, Coke and Pepsi taste the same, so I'm your not a brand loyal customer then its easy to reduce price of Pepsi and make you shift your demand from Coke to Pepsi.

Advantage and disadvantage of foreign direct investment

Answer»

Advantages of FDI

In the context of foreign direct investment, advantages and disadvantages are often a matter of perspective. An FDI may provide some great advantages for the MNE but not for the foreign country where the investment is made. On the other hand, sometimes the deal can work out better for the foreign country depending upon how the investment PANS out. Ideally, there should be numerous advantages for both the MNE and the foreign country, which is often a developing country. We'll examine the advantages and disadvantages from both perspectives, starting with the advantages for multinational ENTERPRISES (MNEs).

Access to markets: FDI can be an effective way for you to enter into a foreign market. Some countries may extremely limit foreign company access to their domestic markets. Acquiring or starting a business in the market is a MEANS for you to gain access.

Access to resources: FDI is also an effective way for you to acquire important natural resources, such as precious metals and fossil fuels. Oil companies, for example, often MAKE tremendous FDIs to develop oil fields.

Reduces cost of production: FDI is a means for you to reduce your cost of production if the labor market is cheaper and the regulations are less restrictive in the target foreign market. For example, it's a well-known fact that the shoe and clothing industries have been able to drastically reduce their costs of production by moving operations to developing countries.

Disadvantages for the company include an unstable and unpredictable foreign economy, unstable political systems, and underdeveloped legal systems. Advantages for the foreign country include INFUSION of foreigncapital, increases in revenue, development of new industries, and the ability to learn from foreign investors

Explain the role of human capital formation in economic development

Answer»

Human CAPITAL and economic growth goes hand in hand. Human capital formation accelerates economic growth whereas economic growth in turn facilitates human capital formation. The interrelationship between economic growth and human capital formation can be EXPLAINED with the help of below mentioned points.

Increase in the productivity of physical capital: Physical capital refers to the stock of produced means of production .It consists of machines, production PLANTS, tools and equipments. The skilled workers handle the productive assets in such a manner that these not only enhance their productivity and but also lead to an efficient utilization of the physical capital. When the productivity increases, the pace of growth is automatically accelerated.

Innovation of SKILLS: An educated person is more productive and skillful. He has the potential to develop new skills and innovate new techniques that can be more efficient and productive. Greater the number of skilled and trained personnel, greater will be probabilities of innovations.

High production rate and equality: Human capital endowed with higher technical skills and innovating power is more productive and efficient. This increase the participation of more people in the process of economic growth and development. Higher the participation rate, higher is the degree of social and economic equality across the country.
