5. A freely suspended current carrying coil is at stable equilibrium in a uniform magnetic field. Whatwill be the angle made by the plane of the coil with the direction of the field? |
|
Answer» When a flat current carrying coil is placed in uniform magnetic field such that dipole moment of coil is antiparallel to manetic field, then coil is in state of unstable equilibrium. If we disturb the coil so that direction of dipole moment of coil is even slightly changed, the coil will flip by 180 degree. You can also use expression for potential energy to prove the same mathematically. U = - pB cos(pB) for (pB) = 180, cos(pB) = -1 thus U = pB i.e. Maximum energy state, thus unstable equilibrium. |
