Electrical resistivity quantifies how strongly a given material opposes the flow of electric current. A low resistivity indicates a material that readily allows the movement of electric charge.

Ammeter is used to measure electrical charge within a circuit. Since resistivity is directly proportional to the length of wire, when the length of wire is doubled, the wire retards the flow of charge twice more forcefully. So electric current decreases due to decrease in rate of flow of charge. Hence, the reading in ammeter decreases to half.
