(a) (i) State the principle of moments as applied to the lever shown in Figure. And (ii) calculate its mechanical advantage if AB=2*0m and FA=20cm. (b) Calculate the effort needed to lift and load.

Answer»

Solution :(a) (i) By the principle of moments.
Load`xx`FA=Effort`xx`FB
(ii) Given: `AB=2*0m,FA=20cm=0*2M`.
FB=AB-FA=`2*0-0*2=1*8m`.
`THEREFORE`Mehcanical ADVANTAGE=`("effort arm FB")/("load arm FA")`
`=(1*8m)/(0*2m)=9`
(b) Given: load=18 kgf, M.A.=9
Since `M.A.=("load")/("effort")`
`therefore`Effort=`("load")/("M.A.)=(18)/(9)=2kgf`.
