A light of wavelength 6000 Aof refractive index 1.5. What will be the frequeand wavelength of light in the medium?in air, enters a mediumncy(Ans: 5 x 10 Hz, 4000 A) |

Answer» When light enters an optically denser medium, it’s velocity reduces while its frequency remains unchanged. Refractive index of a substance wrt vacuum can be equivalently defined as: Considering air to be equivalent to vacuum Refractive index of a medium wrt vacuum, n, = λ(in vacuum)/λ(in medium) or equivalently n = v(in vacuum)/v(in medium) =>λ(in medium) = λ(in vacuum)/1.5 = 6000/1.5 = 4000 Frequency (ν) does not change with medium. We know the wavelength and speed in air (or vacuum). So, ν = v(velocity in vacuum)/λ(wavelength in vacuum) =c/6000Å = 3*10^8/6*10^-7 = 5*10^14 Thank u so much |
