This poem has been taken from poet Mahadevi Verma’s collection of poems titled ‘Nihaar’.
The poet says that the flowers that bloom and smile, they do not know how to wither and the stars that shine brightly, they do not know how to extinguish themselves. What is implied is that flowers always want to remain fresh and beautiful and the stars always want to keep shining brightly.

One is inspired by the clouds as well as the rainy season to be a cloud, which stays constant, rather than the clouds which dissolve into the rain. We are motivated by the king of seasons, the rainy season or the spring season, such that we wish that it always remains steady and does not leave.

It is the order of life that we must accept whatever comes our way whenever it does. Only then can life be successful. In reality, we can only say that one’s life has been purposeful if one faces the difficulties that come, not if one runs away from problems.

The poet asks what is to be done with a world in which there is no destruction and in which there is no pain or suffering? One who has not learnt to get burnt and one who has not learnt to get destroyed, what use is such a life?

The world moves at a fast pace. Life and death are the eternal truths of this world. Will we be blessed to enter the world of immortality? Will we be blessed with divine compassion? However, the poet dismisses the offer of a world of immortality. She beseeches God that it is her right to die and be wiped away.
