The age of the organisms and their resulting fossil fuels is typically millions of years, and sometimes exceeds 650 million years. Fossil fuels contain high percentages ofcarbonand includepetroleum,coal, andnatural gas.

Other commonly used derivatives includekeroseneandpropane. Fossil fuels range fromvolatilematerials with lowcarbontohydrogenratios likemethane, to liquids like petroleum, to nonvolatile materials composed of almost pure carbon, likeanthracitecoal.

Methane can be found inhydrocarbonfields either alone, associated withoil, or in the form ofmethane clathrates.
