The one incident when Tao Ying, the mother, is seen to wish to maintain an ideal image of a mother comes at the end of the story when temple officials visit her home. They offer her two tickets to the temple or money thereof as a compensation for the denial to her son’s entry into the temple. But she refuses to take either money or tickets. She requests the officials to explain her son what happened on that day and that she has not done anything wrong. Her only aim is to make her son realise that she has not done any wrong and in spite of her poverty she wants to bring her son up as an ideal mother.

वह घटना जब माँ ताओ यिंग एक आदर्श माँ की छवि बनाये रखना पसन्द करती है, कहानी के अंत में आती। है जब मंदिर के अधिकारी उसके घर आते हैं। उसे दो टिकट या धन देने का प्रस्ताव करते हैं क्योंकि उसके पुत्र को मन्दिर में घुसने नहीं दिया गया था। परन्तु वह धन या टिकट लेने से इन्कार कर देती है। वह अधिकारियों से अनुरोध करती है कि वे उसके पुत्र को बतायें कि उस दिन क्या हुआ और यह कि उसने (माँ ने) कुछ भी गलत नहीं किया है। उसका केवल यही ध्येय है कि उसके पुत्र को यह आभास हो जाए कि उसकी माँ ने कुछ गलत नहीं किया है, तथा अपनी गरीबी के बावजूद वह अपने पुत्र का लालन-पालन एक आदर्श माँ की तरह करना चाहती है।
