1.

Define echo. Two men 1.02 km apart stand at the same distance from a vertical hillock. One of themfires a shot and other hears the echo 2 s after hearing the direct sound. Find the distance of the manfrom the hillock assuming the velocity of sound to be 340 m/s.[850 m]

Answer»

Echo is a repeated sound that is caused by the reflection of sound waves from a surface. The sound is heard more than once because of the time difference between the initial production of the sound waves and their return from the reflecting surface.

Distance between two men = 1.02 km = 1020 mSpeed of sound = 340 m/sTime taken by the sound to travel directly to second man t1 = 1020/340 = 3 sec

Now the echo is heard after 2sec after direct sound, so we have t2 = 5 sec

Hence, distance between man and hillock is2d2/v = t2d2 = t2*v/2 = 5*340/2 = 850 m
