Explain why a bomber does not drop the bomb when it is vertically above the target ?

Answer»

Trajectory of falling BOMBS :

  • First of all, WHENEVER a plane releases a bomb on enemy territory, the bomb has TWO velocity vectors.

  • One is the VERTICAL velocity vector (due to presence of gravitational acceleration).

  • Second is the horizontal velocity vector equal to velocity of the plane.

When these two vectors are ADDED, we get a parabolic projectile (more precisely a AIR-GROUND PARABOLIC TRAJECTORY).

That's why, the bomber releases the bomb a little before the target, so that the bomb follows rge parabolic trajectory and reach the target.
