In an alternating current circuit, the phase difference between current I and voltage is φ, then theWattless component of current will be

Answer»

The current in an A.C circuit is called wattless current, if the average power consumed in the circuit is 0.

The average power will be 0 in two cases:

Purely Inductive Circuit ( Because in Inductive circuit, voltage leads the current by π/2, thus Cos θ=0)

Purely Capacitive Circuit(Because in Capacitive circuit, current leads the voltage by π/2, this Cos θ=0)

No power is dissipated even though a current in flowing in the circuit. This current is called Wattless current/Idle Current.
