Iodination of methane is carried out in the presence of oxidizing agents like iodic acid or HNO_3 . How do you account for this?

Answer»

Solution :Chlorination of metane gives methyl chloride and hydrochloric acid which are STABLE where as iodin-ation of metane gives methyl IODIDE which is a strong reducing agent and hence reduces`CH_3-I` to`CH_4`
So, iodination is reversible
`CH_4+I_2overset(rarr)(larr)CH_3I+HI`
As a result iodination is CARRIED out in the presence of oxidizing agent like `HIO_3`which oxydises HI to `I_2` and THUS prevents the reversibilityof the reaction
`5HI+HIO_3rarrI_2+H_2O`
`CH_4+I_2overset(HIO_3)rarrCH_3I+I_2+H_2O`
