Question : Answer question numbers (a) - (d)on the basis of you understading of the followingparagraph and the related studied concepts :Plant transport systemswill move energy stores from leaves and raw materials from roots. These two pathways are constructed as independently organised conducting tubes . Onethe xylem moves water and minerals obtained from the soil. The other, phloem transports products of photosynthesisfrom the leaves wherethey are synthesised to other parts of the plant. Unliketransportin xylem whichcan be largely explained by simple physical forces, thetranslocation in phloem is achieved by utilising energy.(a)Why is the need for transport system in plants ?(b) What are the components of tissues involved in transportation in plants ?(c)In what form is thephotosynthetic produce transported and stored ?(d)Though transport in xylem is mainly due to physical forces, translocation in phloem uses energy. Explain .

Answer»

Solution :(a)Thetransportsystemsin plants help in taking water , mineralsand food to differentparts of the plant.
(b)For TRANSPORTATION of water andminerals, xylem is involved whichis made of xylem tracheids, xylem vessels, xylemfibres and xylem parenchyma of whichonly xylem parenchyma is living.
Fortranslocation of food, phloem isinvolved which is made of phloemparenchyma, companion cells, sieve tubes and phloemfibresof which the lest one is dead.
(c)Photosynthetic PRODUCE is translocated in the form of sucrose and stored in the form of STARCH.
(d)Since, duringtranslocation its the solute thatis moved i.e., sucrose HENCE, it REQUIRES energy.Thusphloemis mainlymade up of livingcells unlikexylem wherephysical forces are involved in taking up waterand minerals, and hencegenerally dead.
