Question : Place a similar de-shelled egg in a concentrated salt solution and observe for 5 minutes. The egg shrinks. Why?

Answer»

Solution :De-shelled EGG kept in salt water shrinks. This happens due to passage of water from the egg through the egg membrane to outside. The concentration of the salt is higher on the outside, hence water concentration is less here. Egg shrinks as the water from inside leaves out. In this case exosmosis TAKES place.
The experiment proves that osmosis occurs when two SOLUTIONS are SEPARATED by semi-permeable membrane, water (solvent) moves from REGION of higher concentration to the region of lower concentration.
