Answer» I am using XP.
My Symantec antivirus renewal is approaching and I have SEEN many negative on-line comments about the inability to download the product.
Also saw many negative comments about the inability to get appropriate tech support when problems are encountered. In fact, my on-line searching helped me locate this site.
Any advice or shared experience out there?
Thanks. My NAV's LiveUpdate subscription ran out long ago; never renewed it. Why pay ever yeear when you can get the AVG free edition for free?: http://www.grisoft.com/ Plus, for all major viruses you can just download a free scan/remover for that virus. I've HEARD good things about AVG, and it works fine for me. Also, don't forget about the free online scans (I know there's one at Norton's site at least).Hi natesneat.....Just a thought about AVG. I used it for a long time, and have considered it one of the best free AV's on the net. However, about a month ago, myself and several others had a lot of trouble downloading updates. The auto-update quit ALTOGETHER (would go online and ready to update, but just stopped....wouldn't do anything). Finally started manually downloading the updates from the site then installing them by running AVG. That worked OK for a week or two, then even the manual updates wouldn't download (same problem as the auto-update). I finally gave up and downloaded Avast AV (free), and have had no problems with updates.
The problem could be that I use dial-up. It may work fine on CABLE or DSL, but dial-up is just too slow. I have a feeling they have so many USERS now that their server just can't keep up with update requests. That is the general opinion on a couple of help forums I go to.
Just wanted to mention that, if it becomes a problem for you, Avast is a good option (have to uninstall AVG first, or they will conflict). It can be found by typing Avast in Google or any good search engine.
I'm not saying anything against AVG, by the way. It is an excellent AV program.....just useless if I can't update it. Hopefully, you won't have the problem, so this won't apply to you. However, I do like Avast....it has already caught a virus and I've only had it less than a week.
Best....Larry
