Answer» I know a lot of people love to hate Microsoft, but they just went the extra mile to help me out so the LEAST I can do is give them a good word.
I’ve been using Microsoft Security Essentials [MSE] antivirus for several months because it’s had such good reviews. It’s been GREAT until two weeks ago when I noticed the program wasn’t running for some reason. No problem, I though, just start it manually…………………. ‘ERROR – program will not start’. OK, I thought, Reboot…………. still won’t run. Re-install?.............. ‘ERROR – installation cannot be completed’. Unistall?............. ‘Removal cannot be completed’.
After fruitless Googling for remedies, I put in a support request on the MSE web page. The next day I got an email from Microsoft Customer Support with detailed troubleshooting instructions. Unfortunately, none of it helped, so I let them know. They sent another long list of fixes to try, and then another, and then another. Each time I worked through their suggested fixes, but always received error messages or other problems.
Their final email asked me to name a date and time that a technician could telephone me. Puzzled, but willing to try anything, I agreed on a 2-hour window the upcoming Friday. Sure enough, a technician called, told me he could remotely access my machine and troubleshoot the problem.
To make a long story short, the technician spent the next 4 hours sorting through program and system files and what seemed like a HUNDRED registry keys, making sure everything was OK and finally deleting and re-installing the program, downloading new virus SIGNATURES and initiating a scan.
So, say what you will about Microsoft; I was very impressed that they would devote that much personal attention to one customer to support a free program. Thank you, Microsoft, for super support!
Good post. Thank you for sharing that. Now it I could get.. the local Social Security Office .. to give me that kind of attention Unlike most people, I actually have nothing against Microsoft. They have some of the best customer service I've ever used. I was pretty surprised the first time I ever called them; I had lost the product key and they gave me a new one after verifying that I had a legal copy of the game. Nice and simple. I've had a few run-ins with them, legal and otherwise, but I feel like they've redeemed themselves plenty over the years. They've also got some great PR's over there, and I'm not just saying that because they give me free stuff (although it certainly helps). When I first saw the topic title, I thought it was sarcastic and the post was going to be a rant
