Solve : Cash machines hacked.....?

Answer» http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20227135.700-cash-machines-hacked-to-spew-out-card-details.htmlWhat would this world be if these people put their talents to good use???
Excellent article.Yeah...imagine the good that would come from them exchanging hats.I always wondered about something like this. I've always known they were running Windows on the ATMs here, but I'm surprised they build ATMs off something as vulnerable as Windows. You'd EXPECT banks would have the sense to use something a little more proprietary and secure.Quote

l1nux r00lz! I was THINKING more of a UNIX core.

Many years ago, I STOPPED for cash at a local GAS station. The owners told me that a tech had just been there, and the ATM was still out of service. I looked, anyway, a there was a maintenance menu! A menu! I am not a haxxor, but don't present me with a menu if you don't want me to mess with your stuff.

I messed with it. I'd like to report that the ATM became a slot machine and began spewing cash, but no -- it went out of maintenance mode, and the screen went dark. I was about to LEAVE, thinking I'd really futzed it, when it came back on line in normal mode, and I was able to properly get cash.

So much for my crime spree. Quote from: Aegis on June 20, 2009, 11:01:03 AM

Funny you mention that. More than once I've seen an ATM here where the ATM software had crashed and it was sitting at the Windows desktop. I know they have a keyboard and mouse inside the machine for the techs, but I have yet to encounter one with a touchscreen that was at the desktop... oh the fun I could have.heh, I can see, if it was spewing out cash- the attendants would look at you quizzically-

and you could just say- "just making a little withdrawal" I was in a mall once, and I saw an ATM machine with a "critical system error"...it was pretty funny.Warning! Cash Overflow!

No, normally they say, "I love the taste of plastic in the morning" and keep your card. There was an atm with a bsod lolhah yeah I saw that! silly windows 95
