I have a second hand computer and haven't much knowledge on it.  I have windows 98 and am having problems lately.  I go to windows update and everything opens okay but won't let me install, just sits there doing nothing.  I also play games at pogo.  Now I can open the game and sign in and pick which game I want to play but it won't open the window for it.  I just says done with error but dosen't change.  Could someone please help me!!  Thanks, chobson. Sorry...it was too confusing trying to post a reply in a thread with two different subjects

Anyway, Chobson, a "second hand" computer could have ** anything ** on it. The FIRST thing I would suggest is a good system cleaning.

Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup and click on it. It will display several items (Temp Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin, etc.).  You should check Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin at least. If you haven't added anything new in the last week, you should also check Temporary Files. Then, let it clean out those files (delete them). Then, run Defrag (right under Disk Cleanup). Choose maindrive disk c: It MAY take awhile, but let it go until it's done. Then reboot and see what you've got.

There is more you can do, but first see it this clears up any of it.

Also, you should keep all posts about this topic in this thread (don't start a new topic for further posts about this).

Hope this helps. Best....sierradad
Thank you for you suggestions but I have already tried all of the THINGS you suggested.  I have been using this computer for over a year now and have just started having problems with it.  I still can open the windows update system and it does the scan and notifies me of what I need to update but when I push the install button it dosen't respond.  Maybe this info will help you to help me.  I have windows 98 SE installed.  The windows update sites are in heavy use because of the newest critical updates see here

I have had hang ups at the install stage on several of the computers on my network - but these have successfully installed when tried later.
I just wanted to let you know I solved my own problems. I NEEDED to reinstall batch so I had the oleaut 32.dll file.  I checked by going to control panel, add remove programs and highlighted internet explorer and then CLICKED on the add/remove button.  A box opened up and I asked it to fix any problems with my internet explorer.  It came back saying that it couldn't be repaired to run set up again.  The reason being the missing file.  I used my windows 98 cd to install it and my computer is running properly now and alot faster!!  Thank you to all who helped.
