Solve : Computer is too slow?

Answer»

I know this COMPUTER never used to be this slow...do computers slow down with age? I have ran all the spyware checks, I use Avira, I ran that, I also ran Spybot, and Super anti Spyware and all came back with nothing found. Any tricks to help a comp run fast again?Define slow.

Define slow.
not fast........only joking (but you may yet have found a sense of humour) but Allan is right. Is it slow to start up, slow at running software, slow while on the internet.

All the programs you add and programs that start up with the computer slow it down. Having a small amount of RAM will slow it down. How much RAM do you have. What Operating Sytem are you using? In fact, any bit of general information about your PC would be helpful!!!

Have you defragmented the Hard Drive??

1) Installing programs DOES NOT slow down a computer
2) Defragmenting a HD is not a cure all

Do me a favor, my question was clear - don't explain my questions.Hi Sylverkitti

Allan makes a good point. It would be helpful if you could define "slow". In any case I suggest you take the following three steps.

1. Defragment
Yes, some people will tell you this is unnecessary because windows XP, Vista and 7 does this on its own (to some degree it does). But! in the case of defragmenting, it does a -terrible- job of it!
You can use the window utility or use a program I really like called Defraggler. See here: http://www.piriform.com/defraggler. In my humble opinion defraggler does a BETTER job anyway.

2. Run Disk Cleanup
Windows will CLEAN out cookies, temp files, caches, etc.

3. Run Ccleaner
Also found at http://www.piriform.com. Ccleaner is very good at cleaning up your computer. Only it finds and removes TONS more than Disk Cleanup does. It also has a registry cleaner you should certainly make use of.
Sylverkitti - before you do ANY of the above suggestions, please just answer my question and let me know what you mean by a slow system. Thank you. Quote from: Sylverkitti on September 08, 2010, 02:34:50 PM

Depends on how you define slow in answer to Allan's query, which has now been clarified badly twice. It could be driver issues, failing hard drive,  or any number of things- in order to know we'll need to know exactly what you mean by slow. Or more precisely, what is slow, and how is it different then how it operated before it was "slow"?

Oh dear... I think the same question has now been clarified badly three times.
