Answer» http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_41/b3954102.htm?chan=tcTheir business model has certainly had to change as the price of computers has gone down. My newest Dell is almost 4 years old (a P4 1.7Ghz), and I have never had problems with ANY of the ones I have had roll through here, but outsourcing tech support to India (or anywhere else) is a BAD MOVE! Unfortunately both ends need to be speaking the same language, and that doesn't qualify. I have also ordered parts and spoken to these folks and it was good that one of us knew what we were talking about. Unfortunately people expect some kind of miracular service for free even on budget priced machines. It's not going to happen with any company. In the end it is a business, and it must be somewhat profitable to continue. For the high end machines, corporate customers with higher profit margins and those with a service contract, this support issue needs to be improved no doubt. Same thing for the equipment. Unfortunately you do get what you pay for. Their stuff is proprietary mostly, and upgrades are limited. Proprietary is how they cut cost so they can stay competitive. They certainly are not the only manufacturer to do this. Again, I favor the Optiplex machines (have 8 of them now) and they have all been great. They all came with standard 3 year onsite warranties. The Dimensions are cheaper. (You can interpret that anyway you want.) On the other hand, many people are very satisfied.Dell is a FABULOUS company to deal with IF you are a corporate customer on their Gold Support level. I buy these machines for a living, and Dell is our contracted supplier and service provider. If a motherboard fails on one of our machines I fill out an online form and have a replacement within 48 hours, no questions asked. On the other side of the coin, I have also had to GO through their tech support when monitors and printers have failed on us. In the process, I have experienced all of the same frustrations MENTION in this article.I have called Dell before... Waiting time was a short 10 minutes, at lunch hour at that (usually MUCH longer than 10 minutes) They could not help me, becuase I called about McAfee (can't give support for a product that is not theirs) No problems with it so FAR... You know... The best support is probably from Gateway... Although, having that support comes at a price... Gateways have more problems, but they are able to be fixed... [glb]Flame[/glb]Is Dell run by microsoft? All the computers in the school are Dell pretty good too. well they would be if the teckies stop taking the RAM out of them!!! R0SSI find that "proprietary" and "cookie cutter" is not a satisfactory combination. I prefer "home brew". Maybe thats the deal.....mike/bills pc..........to oust anybody else.......the MDSEIL pc..... Quote Maybe thats the deal.....mike/bills pc..........to oust anybody else.......the mdseil pc..... Now you've got me. I don't have a clue what you're talking about. Quote
