Answer» I'm gonna buy a 500GB external hard drive this weekend, any suggestions on a good QUALITY drive? The last one I used didnt even last a year before it died... Just looking through flyers I have checked out "FreeAgent DESK 500GB Portable Hard Drive' and the online reviews seem good, and a 'Verbatim 500GB External Desktop Hard Drive', the reviews for that one seem average.... Most of the "name"brands are good. Once in a while you'll just GET a bad drive - it happens. I use Maxtor and WD (My Book) for my external drives and have never had any problemsLately i've been buying Seagates as they still offer 5 yr warranties on their regular line of HDD's... With WD you have to get the Caviar line or the new Green ones for a 5 yr.
If you do go with the My Book don't install the software that comes with it...Yeah, a 5 year warranty sounds good, thats what the FreeAgent Drive is offering as well, never heard of ' WD My Book', will have to look that one up online, Seagates as well....Saw a 2TB advertised today for the 1st time--where will it end?truenorth

If your computer can handle it go with eSATA. Otherwise an addon card isn't that expensive, and the speed difference is worth it.I've had success with Maxtor external drives. They seem to be reliable and are fairly priced.
