Solve : Format Hardrive Completely? |
|
Answer» I want to sell my laptop but what to securely delete my INFORMATION from it's hardrive? What are some good programs to do this. Thanks.Kill DiskMake sure you use 'government wipe' software for formatting, which does 7 passes or more. Make sure you use 'government wipe' software for formatting, which does 7 passes or more. The US Government can recover data of up to 15 passes, I believe. You'll want something that uses the Gutmann method like Eraser.Come on. What could possibly be on your system that is that important and who do you think is going to try to recover it? Just either FORMAT it or use a free utility to securely erase it. Bottom line, if someone REALLY wants to recover data (ie, the FBI), they can and will. The only SURE way to prevent it is a hammer.Actually noone can recover data from a 15 pass wipe... Quote from: patio on September 06, 2010, 05:08:10 PM Actually noone can recover data from a 15 pass wipe... Maybe there are technologies/recovery methods and algorithms that require security clearance to even know about? I certainly wouldn't be surprised. Even if that is the case, though, you would have to have some pretty serious stuff on the HD in order for the government to be interested enough to try to recover it. your pictures of Fifi probably don't qualify. Physical damage to a drive wouldn't present that much of a hurdle to well equipped technicians; Data can often be recovered from a secure deleted drive that was subsequently physical smashed and then BURNED. It hardly means the job is easy and in order for them to go to the effort you would have to be some kind of super high-profile cyber-terrorist with an army of deadly but generally personable killer robots, whose emotions aren't ABLE to prevent them from killing their victims but makes them feel bad and apologize profusely as they disembowel their victims. If you aren't then your standard secure delete or physical destruction methods will be more then sufficient to protect the drive from recovery by those who only have access to consumer-level recovery programs.I'll stick to my statement... I read somewhere that the CIA smash the platters and then melt the fragments in a crucible if they really need to be sure. http://eecue.com/c/driveslag Quote from: Salmon Trout on September 07, 2010, 11:36:50 AM and then melt the fragments in a crucible if they really need to be sure. Yep, i think that would do itLikes a challenge and attempts to piece back together the melted components. lol - yep that would even stops the most determined. I also hear some high security system have auto self-destruct! A self-encrypting/wipe software, kill switch, or even a small explosive (they have even tried injection or a high temperature explosion!) inside the HD or memory card to destory it if attempted to open the case within 5 seconds. This is actual fact - sounds like some Myth from a movie to me as well! Talk about going to the extreme! BC_Programmer comment and Salmon Trout picture was amusing, so I had a look around myself Pictures say one thousand words (dummy/stripped TEST system only, but still pretty)... thermite! Yep, that's the HD plates - or whats left of them. TOASTY! Quote from: patio on September 06, 2010, 05:48:25 PM I'll stick to my statement... |
