Answer» What would cause my mom's computer to kick her off line? She uses Outlook Express for her mail - plays a couple games on Pogo and that's about it...Odd things happen - getting kicked off line in the middle of one of her games or while trying to type and send an email... her address book disappearing - error msgs - she's had her phone lines checked - her internet carrier is no help at all - the guy that built her comp. always has her take it back to him - he has it a couple days and says he can't get it to do anything she's saying it does at home! I don't have the comp. specs...but it's less than a yr. old. I've sugg. she buy a Dell or Gateway for good online help. She's ready to give up on something that's taken me years to get her to use!sewsandi.......Tell Mom not to get excited its just a tool. Now.......what operating system does it have ? Is it connected to the net via a dialup or hispeed connection? I'm not defending the guy that built it ......but when he has it in his shop , he is probably USING a differant isp than your Mom is at home .....and if the problem is with the ISP it would not show up there . Is this something that has just started ? Does she have a good anti virus program installed? What are the error messages ? When did the address book diappear? let us know. dl65 She has XP Home - it's a dial up connection - her address book disappeared when she unplugged her computer and had her brother (they're both in their 70's) set his Dell up to trouble check all her electrical. (all the elec. seemed fine using his comp.) She uses Panda Scan (sp?) for her anti-virus prog. Basically she's complained about odd things HAPPENING on her last 2 comp. (she's on her 4th). Getting kicked off has been a prob. for quite awhile - it's just gotten worse lately. I'm willing to try anything, but I'm 200 miles away and trying to help via emails or the phone. You guys are awesome!! I didn't expect a reply so soon! Thanks!!I'm sorry but I can't tell you what the error msgs. are. I've emailed her and she said those aren't coming up like they used to. Perhaps you should create an account for your mother that gives her very limited access. To protect both her and the computer..Dear Raptor.....
Funny but no help................. :-/sewsandi.....The disappearing address book is the odd thing in your POST......Is it possible that Mom may have accidently deleted it ? however if she didnt .....and you are sure there are no viruses in her machine......you could use the System restore FEATURE in Xp to restore the p/c to a date before the address book disappeared. As far as the loss of dialup is concerned ......given there is nothing wrong with the modem or the modem settings......its more than possible that the problem may lie with the isp........Some of them are really bad......they will boot people off.... if their system senses any lenghty periods of inactivity. Is it possible to try another service provider or consider a hi speed connection?
Hope this helps

If you had clicked on the link I supplied you with you could have seen the software that may have been useful. Dear Raptor....... I'm so new to this site and evidently 'blind'....I didn't see those HUGE letters saying "click here". Duh..... Thanks for your help! That is most likely due to the fact that I added them after you posted.
More people seem to be unable to identify the blue text as a hyperlink. I should keep that in mind.http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_reinstall_ie_and_oe_6.htm maybe both problems are linked..I'm not sure if your trouble has been fixed but I have had the same trouble before and still do at times. I have found out that the ISP i use has a system information in programs and I was told to go to it and click utilities and delete temps files which take up space in hard drive. When I play pogo it leaves lots of stuff behind. when in utilities click clear browser chahe it mat take several times but put back to zero. and go to control panel and internet options and delete temps there also. Then in windows explorer click windows and then cookies edit slected all and then file delete. then go to temp files and click to open edited and slect all then file delete This will help free up memory and keep her on lineAdvanced System Optimizer V2 is a program that will go deeper when it comes to cleaning your system. A must have.
