While it's good to be cautious about installing ActiveX from a WEBSITE, I don't think you have anything to worry about as far as installing the ActiveX component from MS in order to download Windows Defender. If you don't want to install the ActiveX component for validation, follow the link, at the bottom of the main web page for Windows Defender, for Alternate Validation Method.
