Solve : Linux get not viruses.? |
Answer» I keep hearing that Linux get not any viruses.i use my pc for browsing,SEO working, watching movies and downloading from youtube.really is this not get any viruses? inform me.In a word, "no." Even worse, Microsoft's email software is able to infect a user's computer when they do something as innocuous as read an email! And if somebody is still running Outlook 97, they deserve it, really. Quote because Windows uses a registry and allows executional programs to run (exe files) the caveat is easier to use MS Windows, but easier to hack tooThe registry only stores data... *NIX allows anything to run that has the execution bit set or starts with a shebang. This doesn't really do anything on either system. The OS is designed to run other programs. An additional point is that whether something can get viruses and whether it is secure are two different stories. All modern operating systems feature Limited User Accounts- Linux uses sudo, BSD I believe uses chroot, Windows has UAC, etc. Quote from: abseh1 on September 03, 2012, 06:47:25 AM Even worse, Microsoft's email software is able to infect a user's computer when they do something as innocuous as read an email! I think the real issue is how easily you can get INFECTED in the browser. And I'm talking Internet Explorer, Firefox, CHROME, etc.. EDIT: I mean to say another issue, it would be foolish to suggest that email-spread malware wasn't a real issue. Quote from: abseh1 on September 03, 2012, 06:47:25 AM It is just matter of time, once Linux got popular crackers will target Linux desktop too (think of all those net-books loaded with Linux). I thought cracker was a racist term for Caucasians... Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 08, 2012, 01:14:08 AM And if somebody is still running Outlook 97, they deserve it, really.Haha, agreed!!! All OSes can get viruses. It is true that there are less for Linux but it is possible you could get one. A LOT of it depends on what you do with your OS. There are people who secure their Windows and don't get viruses. It is funny though to see windows virus sites using Linux though! There was one time that I using my computer with Ubuntu and I purposely went to this virus site. It had this fake windows XP themed screen and a flashing messages about something being critically wrong with my PC and telling me to "click here". It was so funny, I just laughed my head off. |

Solve : Linux-HA Clustering ... Anyone use this before?? |
Answer» Has anyone here used the Linux-HA clustering to see how well it works? Has anyone here used the Linux-HA clustering to see how well it works? Yes, it works very well. I've done the class on it at work so I can tell you the easiest way to configure it is by installing ricci on the 2 F17 servers, then installing luci on another box where you want to administer it from. Luci just tells ricci what to install and its all setup. The only thing that caught me out was the resource group dependancies for a service seem back to front to me. Also, for a 2 node cluster you might want to define a quorum device and set up some carefully chosen heuristics to get the best node to win in a split-brain race. Which reminds me, never use manual fencing. Always use the ILO, DRAC or whatever to do proper power fencing. Thanks Banjo67xxx for your input on this. I have decided that I am going to take 2 spare workstations that I have and learn how to get this working before deciding to pull an all nighter if NEEDED to cluster the 2 servers we have. If I run into any issues, I'll ask here. Was nice to get a response from you on this as for I thought maybe no one had played with it here before and it would become one of those unanswered questions that fade into the past.. Quote from: DaveLembke on August 06, 2012, 02:44:00 PM Was nice to get a response from you on this as for I thought maybe no one had played with it here before and it would become one of those unanswered questions that fade into the past.. I'm Red Hat Cluster certified and support it as my day job, so answering questions on Fedora cluster is no problem. |

Solve : Sub-domain to direct traffic to another phisical server? |
Answer» Ok. So my question this time, is about sub domain systems. In standard HTML thee is a 'refresh' command that will direct the browser to another place that has a correct URL. i have 2 web servers ... Aha, I see what you are doing. Important question: Does your ISP give you more than 1 static IP? and if so, does your ADSL/cable modem support multiple WAN IPs? If the answers to both questions is yes, then the answer is easy. Just setup your sub-domain to use your 2nd WAN IP, and configure your modem to port forward http for that IP to the 2nd server. If the answer is yes to only the first question, then depending upon the modem, you might be able to configure the relevant port forwarding rules using iptables on a 3rd server in a DMZ. If you haven't got multiple static IPs then you'll have to fudge some sort of proxying through the first server. Otherwise, just stick with non-standard port numbers, and if you want to HIDE them from the users then use iframe to hide them. Personally, I just have apache running on a single server, with lots of virtualhost definitions for the different domains I want to serve.I have subdomains working server side, and will allow traffic to the server soon, but is there a way to direct to physical servers at all? I am offering a service to clients, and if i could have them avoid typing port numbers, that would be great, however, if it is unavoidable, then so beat it. if there is the possibility to create this action using a cisco rack mount firewall or anything of the sort, that would be great. Thanks for the help, as i now have sub-domains working with apache, but i would like subdomains to sort out different client's services. Thanks. |

Solve : I got it working.? |
Answer» Well I didn't get Linux Mint to work, but I did get ubuntu to work and I am using it now. I really like it. Windows might be a thing of the past for me. So far it has been able to do any thing that Windows can do. Linux Mint wouldn't install, it said that there was a problem with some file.ubuntu works fine. I have loaded pictures, music , surfed the net and watched a DVD. So far all is GOOD. Did you get Ubuntu 9.10 or 10.04LTS? I had 9,04 on a DISK and got it up and running. I really like it. I was asked did I want t up grade to 9.10 and I did and every thing went BAD. I couldn't bring it back up. It deleted some files to clean up and got rid of some thing it needed. I have spent most of the night trying to get it back.More often than not an update will break more things than fix. I'd suggest backing up anything that's important and reinstalling with the latest version. It may also help to backup your config files, too. |

Solve : I need help with installing ubuntu.? |
Answer» I installed an older version of ubuntu (9.04)and was asked to up date, I did. After up dating it cleaned up some files and nothing worked after that. I tried to reinstall it and was told that I needed to clean the disk. So I down loaded the newest ubuntu and tried to install it. The live CD comes up and works great. I try to install it and get an error (could not start device/dev/mapper/asr_pictures-no such file or directory) and it won't let me install it. This comes up after giving the key board info.I was using a USB then changed to a PS/2 that didn't help. This was the same error I got when I tried to install the newest Linux Mint. I know I can clean the old CD and USE it to install the older ubuntu and that will work. Then it will run out of support soon. I need help getting the new one installed. Please help. Thank you for your time.Try seeing if your Ubuntu 9.04 will not give you an error. If ubuntu 9.04 does give you an error then try maybe formatting your disk with a formatting app (such as http://partitionlogic.org.uk/download/index.html) and then restart the installation. Let us know how that turns out. I have had good results with the 9.10 and I'm going to hold off on using the latest version. There is a reason why they keep these archives are round. Sometimes it turns out that one of the older versions is more stable and reliable than the newer release. I do not know if that's true of the Ubuntu, but it certainly is a possibility.9.10 was supposed to be the most buggy Ubuntu release ever, there are still bugs that have not been fixed. I kept 9.04 which I really liked and never upgraded to 9.10. Now that I've skipped 9.10 I'm going to upgrade to 10.04 which is really nice. Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 05, 2010, 01:04:45 PM if you find the 9.04 version as reliable, I don't see any reason to change. The problem is that support for 9.04 will end this November. It would be best for I Shooter to get 10.04 now and have it supported for 3 years. Quote from: I Shooter on May 05, 2010, 12:37:16 PM I did and installed ubuntu 9.04. Every thing went just as it should. All is well with this install. Life is good. Now if I up date this ubuntu to the latest then I think it will all quit working like last time. Now I would try to install 10.04 from your CD. When installing just tell it to format the drive (assuming Ubuntu is the only OS on this drive) and install 10.04 on it. You could upgrade to 9.10 and then to 10.04 but this is not the recommended way to do this. You are better off doing a "clean install" of 10.04 onto your computer. And it might be a safe idea to try this with another CD drive. The only reason I can see to change is because it's only supported for about one more year, that is 9.04. I like it better than what I saw of the new one, 10 what ever. That is the only reason I can see to up grade, is the support. If it isn't supported you can't get up dates for stuff if you have to do a reinstall like I just had to. I have a question. How do you reset the text size. I found it be for. This time I am having no luck finding it. Quote from: I Shooter on May 05, 2010, 01:24:00 PM The only reason I can see to change is because it's only supported for about one more year, that is 9.04. If it isn't supported you can't get up dates for stuff if you have to do a reinstall like I just had to. I have a question. How do you reset the text size. I found it be for. This time I am having no luck finding it.9.04 is only support for 6-7 more months. I don't what you did not like about 10.04, is it the theme or something? Actually to be honest I'm perfectly happy with my 9.04 right but I am going to switch to 10.04 this month because 9.04 is almost at end of life. I'd try installing 10.04 like I mention in the last post with a different cd drive if you have one. To change font size: go to System>Preferences>Appearance. Click to Fonts tab.I will give it a try with my other computer and with CD-R and let you know how it goes. Thank you much for your help.It didn't work. I down loaded the 10.04 to the desk top and burned it to a CD. I got the same error message when I tried to install it. That was on a hole different system. Faster CPU, faster ram and a Sony DVD. I guess I will just buy it from On-Disk. I don't know why I can't make it work by down loading it.Do you have a RAID controller? Not on this computer. I do have raid on the mother board on the other computer. I still get the same error message on both. I think I am making a bad down load. I don't think it has any thing to do with the two computers. The same thing is happening to both. That is in less it has some thing to do with my router or connection. Then I down load other stuff from the same connection and don't have any problems. I don't know. I ordered 10.4 from On-Disk. If that don't work then I know it is the computer. Thank you much for your time. The disk came in from ON-Disk. It is the Posted Ubuntu 10.4 and it didn't work. I got the ( could not start device/dev/mapper/asr_pictures-No such file or directory)so now I know that it isn't the down load or connection. I have no idea what it is. As I said before it comes when it asks for what lay out of the key board. I changed the key board to PS/2 and the mouse to PS/2 ( They were usb.) That didn't help. I have no idea what to do from here. 9.4 works fine. That is what I am using now. I had no problems installing it or working on it. Well after I cleaned the disk. Any one have any ideas?I also ordered a new copy of linux Mint. That didn't work, I got the same error message as with Ubuntu and Ubuntu for net books. There has to be some thing about this computer that it don't like. Then why will the old stuff work?Just a guess. Video graphics. Can you install with just the built in Video? |

Solve : Problem Unbuntu install? |
Answer» Gateway 7330gz notebook I can download the various ISO's here on the notebook & save them in various placesYou need to burn the ISO to CD or DVD, using an appropriate burning program to create a bootable disc. One I've used is ImgBurn. Once you've made your bootable disc, you may need to access your BIOS settings and set CD-ROM as the initial boot device. In other words, you need to boot from the CD/DVD, not from your hard drive. The notebook doesn't have a working CD DVD player so that's not an optionThen i suggest Installation From USB Stick the bios doesn't support from USB which is why I've had to resort to using a HDD adapter which isn't quite getting me there no sound!See http://support.gateway.com/s/USB/5502664/5502664faq18.shtml, titled How do I create a bootable USB Flash Drive?Requires a windows partition & to be able to boot from USB neither of which are avaiable I have 9.10 on a 8g stick & turned off all the boot options, still no joySorry, but I don't have any further suggestions. Let's see whether someone else can chime in.Thanks for the effort It isn't the run of the mill install Maybe try installing from over the internet. It's a bit complicated but it is the only way unless maybe with a floppy drive. http://www.instantfundas.com/2007/08/install-any-linux-distro-directly-from.htmlThank I book MARKED that I burned a couple of disc's & installed a dual boot of mint9 & 9.10. the weirdness of my install was compounded by a setting that missing in BIOs being missing, causing me to have to boot in recovery mode once I upgraded to the 10.04lts I still didn't have any sound, & was running through the steps [troubleshooting sound] on 10.04 & froze up, I rebooted into mint [same cpu security fault] recovery & had sound been using it for a bout 3 days So far I like mint very much better menus all the stuff from unbuntu works I've got a couple of 5g partitions for each OS & a 140g logical for files so I should be able to use that little bit you gave me to do some more test [DISTROS] drives... Quote from: Garthhh on May 22, 2010, 07:47:20 AM I burned a couple of disc's & installed a dual boot of mint9 & 9.10.I thought your DVD drive was not working. Quote from: Garthhh on May 22, 2010, 07:47:20 AM So far I like mint very muchWell Mint is basically Ubuntu with custom menu (called the MintMenu) and pre-installed proprietary multimedia codecs. It uses the same package repositories and everything else. That is the advantage to Mint. The advantage to Ubuntu is that is is much more stable than Mint.the CD/DVD on the notebook doesn't work I installed th HDD on my ol pentium III pc & set up a dual boot before reinstalling in my notebook I've actually had the opposite experience with mint, my unbuntu seems to freeze after a reboot on 10.04 or mint I get a black screen, when I boot into recovery I get prompted to run /usr/bin/check-bios-nx --verbose which gives me this This CPU is family 15, model 4, and has NX capabilities but is unable to use these protective features because the BIOS is configured to disable the capability. Please enable this in your BIOS. For more details, see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Security/CPUFeatures This notebook has an american megatrends bios, but I can't update as it is unique to gateway & lacking any windows OS I can't update through the gateway site absolutely everything is enabled on every tab in bios I can boot in recovery in something described low resolution mode, I can't see any difference after a few days of switching back & forth between mint9 & 10.04lts, mint is giving me less trouble 10.04 seems to freeze from time to time & won't come back without a reboot Quote from: Garthhh on May 22, 2010, 07:52:51 PM absolutely everything is enabled on every tab in biosThat is not necessarily a good thing. There are some things in the BIOS that are better to have disabled. And personally I hate American Megatrends. The BIOs is the short version, no cpu temp, no flash, probably some other stuff missing too I suppose a few extra screens is the price I have to pay I've never had decent support from Gateway, I'll certainly never buy anything new from them, Silly thing is almost as bad as a dell... |

Solve : no sound - didn't know where to post? |
Answer» I bought the computer used with ubuntu on it. Its now VERSION 9.1. There has never been any sound. How do I know if there is something that I can or if I have to get it repaired? No speakers. That's your problem then. you need some computer speakers in order to hear sound. When you get them, plug them into a small, round, green plug on the back of the PC somewhere.No. A computer doesn't need speakers to beep. My roomate's worked fine with no speakers.Do you have a START menu like Puppy Linux if so then go there to System folder and click on hard info hardware information then go to input devices and it will show you your speaker. Actually that is all I know but mine works on Puppy Linux so it should on Ubuntu. Quote from: dbch on May 18, 2010, 02:59:16 PM A computer doesn't need speakers to beep. My roomate's worked fine with no speakers. That is only if your computer has a PC speaker inside. Most computers now no longer have those. Go get some speakers and post back. If you get them used they should cost too much, I've them for $2 before at the local Salvation Army thrift store. Quote from: dbch on May 18, 2010, 02:59:16 PM No. A computer doesn't need speakers to beep. My roomate's worked fine with no speakers. And, your roommate listened to what on his computer? Music, audio content from the web, or just beeps? While it's true some computers have INTERNAL speakers, the big majority do not. So, they require external speakers. However, external speakers are usually not needed for the beeps that computers emit during startup or to indicate certain hardware errors. So, if that's all you care about hearing, then you probably don't need speakers. Oh, I just saw Cityscape's post. I see I'm duplicating his comments to some extent. Quote from: dbch on May 13, 2010, 11:23:41 PM I bought the computer used with ubuntu on it. Its now version 9.1. There has never been any sound. How do I know if there is something that I can or if I have to get it repaired?Let's start again tell us what kind of computer ram speed [cpu hz] you can have a look around here http://ubuntuforums.org/ there is a WHOLE section on sound problems 9.10 seemed to have lot of reports of sound problems, which were supposedly solved by 10.04 Myself I'm on mint9 which I like looks more polished & has easier to follow menus Quote from: Garthhh on May 22, 2010, 07:58:50 AM 9.10 seemed to have lot of reports of sound problems...9.10 had problems with "everything". It was widely known to be the most buggy Ubuntu release ever. There are still bugs that haven't been fixed! That is exactly why I never used 9.10 Karmic, I used 9.04 and then did a clean install of 10.04 a few weeks ago. |

Solve : How do I compress and archive a file?? |
Answer» How do I compress and archive my "yyyyfile" into an archive file "zzzzfile" in my HOME directory in one command? Quote from: ratrace on April 22, 2010, 07:04:46 PM How do I compress and archive my "yyyyfile" into an archive file "zzzzfile" in my home directory in one command? archive your whole directory Code: [Select]tar zcfv mytarfile.tar.gz /homedir/ if you want to archive one file, just USE gzip, or zip Code: [Select]gzip myfile I have to perform the command specifically as stated in my question, it's for a class and it's due by midnight tonight and I only am stuck on a few things. I'm getting an error: $ tar zcfv yyyyfile.tar zzzzfile tar: invalid option -z Usage: tar c[vwfbB[[0-9][hlm]]] [pathname ...] tar r[vwfbB[[0-9][hlm]]] [files ...] tar t[vwfbB[[0-9][hlm]] tar u[vwfbB[[0-9][hlm]]] [pathname ...] tar x[vwfblmpB[[0-9][hlm]]] [pathname ...] What should I try now? Thanks for your help--very appreciated!!!Would it be the following: tar -xvf filename.tar newfilename ? when I do that I get the following: thisfile.tar in ustar format 0 files, 8 blocks I don't know this stuff well enough to know what that means!what OS are you on? your tar don't have the -z option, so just tar it normally, then gzip it Code: [Select]tar cvf mytarfile.tar myfile gzip mytarfile.tar XP--the direction say to do it in one step, but if it's not possible then I'll just paste the error msg with the command. Thanks again! Quote from: ratrace on April 22, 2010, 08:45:22 PM XPneither tar not gzip come by default with windows XP, and the shell prompt you've displayed is not a Windows Command Prompt... True. The OP would have to be using cygwin or another NIX emulation LAYER to have such a result. Cygwin uses an emulation layer to transform Unix system calls to those supported by Windows, so it is slower than the real thing. Rsync-ing to Windows filesystems also meant issues with file PERMISSIONS and owners |

Solve : Uninstalling/Repairing Linux partition thats dual with Xp? |
Answer» I do not have a recovery CD for my Xp, no idea where it could be. Originally I wanted to download DSL on a Dell L700cx (desktop) running ME 2000. I tried it first with a CD I burned from my laptop at home but it would not boot so I decided to use Unetbootin on my laptop to INSTALL DSL. That worked and it booted but DSL seemed like a step down considering ME so I tried Saboyan. Saboyan did not boot. So NEXT I tried Fedora also would not boot, some TYPE of msg like "can not find media"' or maybe medium. And some silly msg like "going to sleep forever now" idk lol. |

Solve : Ubuntu little shutdown bar disappeared?? |
Answer» Ok as i mentioned in my first Ubuntu post I love Ubuntu and i am NEW to it. My issue is that normally in the right corner we have our user name powersymbol menu and then the options of shut down etc. Anyway the one night at start up i got an error which unfortunately i can't remember what is was and that username, and power symbol menu bar along with all those options disappeared? INSTEAD of my username i have the time in the very right corner now. I know this isn't easy to explain so please tell me if you don't get it. If this helps my system specs will be posted at the bottom. and Ps i am dual booting with windows xp pro SP3 |

Solve : Transfer files between a Kubuntu PC & Windows XP PC? |
Answer» We have computer running Kubuntu 7.04 which we have to use to prepare RIP printing files (the program is called Caldera and only works on Linux). One problem I have when transferring these files is that it is so slow, when transferring I get a 'stalled' message. How are you currently doing this? Do these computers have a DVD burner? One DVD can hold up to 4.3GB.They stated: Quote We then have to transfer large files (around 100mb-2gb) via a memory stick to an adjacent PC which runs Windows XP pro.in first post as current method. An external HD would be just as slow as thumb drives. Best method I could think of is create peer-to-peer network and use samba or install an FTP service on the Linux box and then Peer-to-Peer the files back and forth over network connection. Cheapest network that can be built if both systems have network adapters is a cross-over Peer-to-Peer network. And all you need is cross over cable between them. Only concern with cross-over cable is how far appart are these systems and can a cable be safely run between them without creating a clothes line or trip hazzard? I'd go with samba: http://www.samba.org/Computers are right next to each other. YES, I might try using cds - is this quicker than copying to a Kingston memory stick? Cant understand why it is so slow, then keep getting 'stalled' message, then when 'safely removing' I get message window which says 'Error kio_media_mounthelper ....the device was successfully unmounted but could not be ejected'' . But, I do like the idea of using Samba. I looked at the website - what I need are idiot PROOF instructions on what to do Are there any available? many thanks |

Solve : Linux Mint with Intel board DG31PR? |
Answer» I just installed Linux Mint on Intel board DG31PR and every thing works fine. I didn't INSTALL any drivers because they are for Windows OS. I went to Intel to get the drivers like I have in the past for other boards and I couldn't find any drivers for Linux. Every thing is working fine. Do I just go with it the way it Is?If everything is working, I wouldn't worry about it. Linux doesn't have "drivers" like Windows does. The Linux kernel gets set up at install time. Like JJ 3000 says, no NEED to worry. Linux doesn't have "drivers" like Windows does. The Linux kernel gets set up at install time. Like JJ 3000 says, no need to worry. Well... it has Kernel Modules that can get "plugged-in"... I think that is what is referred to by the "proprietary drivers" window in many distros. In the past when I installed Linux I went to Intel and down loaded drivers MARKED other or independent for Linux. Then I had to down load drivers for the video card, that never went well. So you are saying that no longer has to be dun? All the drivers are in Linux already? If that is the case great. Is that the same for video drivers? Is that the same for video drivers? That's really down to whether or not non-proprietary drivers are available. If they are it will all be installed automatically, if not there will either be a facility that prompts you to download them or you will have to download them yourself. This is often the case with graphics cards. |

Answer» I have an old computer that was running Win 98. It seems to be very MESSED up. I have another post about that elsewhere here. But I have had a curiosity about linux for a while. I think this is a 386 I don't know how fast it is or how much memory it has. It's not a 386. Windows 98 refuses to install or run on a 386. You are going to have to find out the processor model, speed, and the amount of memory before any relevant recommendations can be made, however, a computer from the windows 98 era will be unlikely to run any of the later, more "USER friendly" Linux desktop Operating Systems. (Edit: except puppy linux and DSL (*censored* small linux) those seem to run on nearly anything)That was quick. I've seen this *censored* in several posts about linux. Can you give me a hint as to the unacceptable word so I can start to look for it? I'm serious here. I really don't have a clue. Noe of the words I can think of seem to fit the context. So can I download the operating system on this machine and burn a DISK that will load the system and get the old computer to boot? How do I start. I have a nephew who swears by linux. He is incommunicado right now or I think he would help me. Quote from: tightcoat on August 15, 2010, 09:50:02 PM That was quick. I've seen this *censored* in several posts about linux. Noe of the words I can think of seem to fit the context.heh, I forgot about that, I have censoring shut off in my profile. Think, "Dang Small Linux", but instead of Dang, the things beavers make Quote So can I download the operating system on this machine and burn a disk that will load the system and get the old computer to boot? How do I start. That should work. Here are the download pages for the appropriate ISO disc images: Puppy Linux: http://puppylinux.org/main/index.php?file=Download%20Latest%20Release.htm DSL:http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/download.html Basically, you burn the disk, and I believe these are "live" CDs, which means that when you boot from the disc it starts a fully operational version of the OS. If you want to install it, most have a desktop icon to install it to your hard drive. There are a lot of distros out there but most of them (Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, etc) cater to more modern PCs, and don't run quite as well on an older machine. I'm sure there are other usable distributions other then Puppy and DSL, too. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 15, 2010, 09:58:53 PM heh, I forgot about that, I have censoring shut off in my profile. You N Americans make me laugh with your "*censored* is a swear word". I don't even think you can even configure which words are and are not considered "bad". Not sure though, and too lazy to check. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 16, 2010, 12:35:22 AM It's the forum software. I don't even think you can even configure which words are and are not considered "bad". And the software was written where? Anyhow, you see Americans writing "H-ll" in uncensored forums, like it was 1850 again. Anyhow... http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=301484.0 Quote And the software was written where? Anyhow, you see Americans writing "H-ll" in uncensored forums, like it was 1850 again. quite clbuttic. BC_Programmer, thank you very much for the clues and for the help. OK, I downloaded and burned DSL (Let the reader understand) It worked. I have only run it off the cd so far. I also learned a little more of what the computer has under the hood Pentium III 500 MHz I think 128 K RAM So now what kind of linux can I run. I just as well jump in with both feet. Since I can't get Windows 98 to open is there a way to reformat the hard drive and start over with the new OS? This computer is probably 11 years old, has always worked just fine until last week and that was my fault. I can't imagine that there are any old files that I have not loaded over to my current computer. It is at least 4 years old and if I haven't needed them yet I probably won't. All I do on this is surf. It isn't in the room where the real work happens. Like I said I am green to all this linux stuff but have been curious and so now must be the right time.To install it to the HD, there is usually a desktop icon you start after DSL finishes loading and shows the desktop. It will act as a "wizard" of sorts to install it to the HD. Quote from: tightcoat on August 16, 2010, 11:47:52 AM BC_Programmer, thank you very much for the clues and for the help.If your computer does have a 500 Mhz CPU then I personally would run Lubuntu (http://lubuntu.net/). Lubuntu will run slower than *censored* Small Linux but it will be much better supported in terms of programs and is easier to use. It is a very lightweight version of the most popular Linux distro Ubuntu. I would recommend it for beginners over any other lightweight distro because it has one of the best user support communities. If you have problems with it there will be lots of users online who could help you fix them at http://ubuntuforums.org/. If you use *censored* Small Linux it'll be a lot harder to find help. Like Cityscape said, LUbuntu would work on that machine. XUbuntu would probably work as well. As mentioned, the community support for the various Ubuntu spin-offs is top notch. I haven't used DSL or Puppy Linux is ages, so I can't really comment on how well they've been doing as of late. I just know DSL is still one of the most popular full out-of-the-box distros (full meaning ready to go after you install it, not like Arch or Gentoo). Quote from: SilentAssasin64 on September 09, 2010, 01:36:03 PM XUbuntu would probably work as well.It may be but it would be really slow, the OP would be better off Lubuntu. I've tried Lubuntu and it is quite nice. |

Solve : Ubuntu serious booting problem? |
Answer» Hello everyone. I am using a Toshiba Satellite laptop, dual-booting Vista and Lucid Lynx. Vista and Lucid Lynx.MS does not give much support for anything but a Windows OS. Here is the basic way to solve the problem without rocket science. 1 . Get a HDD that has never been touched by Vista. 2. Create a small primary partition for an older Windows version. 3. INSTALL either Windows 2000 or an almost stark naked XP. 4. Install a dual boot Linux. 5. Use a suitable partition manager to adjust the partition sizes, leaving free space room for Visa to have a large hunk. 6. Install Vista last. Vista will give a single entry for you prior dual-boot install. But the dual boot is still there. If you select 'previous version' the old dual-boot comes up. That is the no-brainier way. Anything else is anything else. |

Solve : Can't use computer anymore? |
Answer» I'm using Maverick on an emachines with a samsung monitor. I tried using suspend, but when I returned from it, there was no video (i.e., the monitor is not RECEIVING any information, I think). When I tried to reboot several TIME, same thing happens. And since I can't see anything, I can't really do anything about it. Any ideas? (I also tried disconnecting and reconnecting the monitor, but that didn't do anything). ThanksWhen you say 'Maverick', what do you mean? When you say 'Maverick', what do you mean? Maverick Meerkat: Ubuntu 10.10 I tried restarting the monitor after a certain amount of time, doesn't work. For some reason, putting it into suspend mode stopped the computer from sending the video FEED to the monitor. Quote from: JJ 3000 on December 11, 2010, 01:46:42 AM Do you see anything at all on the screen when you power up? Do you get a no signal message on the screen? Can you get into BIOS? If not, try clearing CMOS. I don't see anything from the computer, all I see is the monitor's little window (with the backlight) in the corner switching from "Analog" mode to "DIGITAL" mode several times (I guess it's searching for a feed) before the screen goes black again with the power light flickering on and off. I can't get into BIOS because I can't see anything (I don't know how to get there). Also, I don't know how to clear CMOS.Unplug your computer. Open your computer's case and if you have a video card (not onboard video) take the card out and re-seat it. While you're in there look for a small flat battery about the size of a nickel on your motherboard. It looks like this: Take that battery out. Press the power button on the front of your computer a few times while it's out. Leave it out for 5-10 minutes. Then replace it. Use caution the whole time you are working inside of your computer. Static electricity can fry your components. Make sure that one of your arms is making contact with the metal frame of the case to GROUND yourself and prevent static discharge. Before you try to boot back up make sure that you have the monitor connected and plugged in. Try booting with only the necessary peripherals plugged in (just the monitor, keyboard and mouse). Thanks for your help everyone! It turns out that when I powered my computer off, it was just extending the suspend mode, so I unplugged it and replugged it and now it's working. Solve : PSPP? |
Answer» Can anyone using PSPP (the open-source version of SPSS) on linux tell me how WELL it works? I'm thinking of switching my emachines desktop to Linux but I need this program to run statistical tests for my PSYCHOLOGICAL research. Thanks for your help. Do you think Fedora or gNewsense would work?I don't know; I have not used them.I've been using it for many years and it works very well. However it can't yet do some of the very advanced statistical analyses. So check your requirements first. The official released version 0.6 however is very old. The 0.7 version although not official works much better and has a whole lot more features, so that's the one I would recommend if you choose to use it. thanks!!!! |

Solve : Linux FTP ... what is best option for secure FTP to upload and download files?? |
Answer» Thinking of building a Linux FTP Server to replace the Windows Home Server, SINCE I only use the MS Windows Home Server for FTP when I am away from home, and have had issues with their service that is redirected through ONE of their redirection SERVERS that then points and authenticates with your home server. BIGGEST problem is that if the home server is offline for a month or so, MS ditches the redirection path, and so you have to go through a reconfiguration madness. |

Hello, I would like to know how to create a tree consisting of directories and subdirectories using one command instead of mkdir and using cd to go in and create them individually. I will make a guess at what your want. Once we know what you want, it is easy. Let';s suppose that yew want any umber of directories from the root with names that have no special chars or spaces. Likewise for sub directories. But sub dirs are created across all the root directories. With the given names. And each sub dir can have a number of empty TXT files with given names. Repeated inn each sub directory. Is that close? Solve : copy literal string to a Linux file? |
Answer» USING Linux I have a script which EXECUTES various programs e.g. netstat, ps -ef|grep .... and directs the output to a common file. I've noticed that the output is strung together i.e. no separator between e.g. netstat and then another netstat. I'd like to insert a separator literal between them to make the viewing of the output file easier.. rather than try to determine where the output of one netstat ends and the next begins.. Anyone have an idea I've tried cp 'string' >> output file but that failed with a syntax error....try Code: [Select]echo 'string' >> output file I've tried - cat 'string' >> /output file.
