Solve : Problem Unbuntu install?

Answer»

Gateway 7330gz notebook
1g ram
pentium IV
3.3 ghz

bad CD DVD
no boot from USB option
since I don't have xp anymore I can't get a bios upgrade from gateway & not supported by american mega trends...

there is a setting for boot from network, but my ISP thinks I should pay them money for a static address...
Is there a way to use a simple work groupswitch instead of the router/modem combo?
I have yet to FIND an adapter that would LET me plug a full sized CD DVD into the notebook

I've done several different installs of unbuntu 8.04, 9.10, 10.04
by using an HDD adapter & using my pentium III PC
boot from a cd & put the HDD back in the notebook after

one thing that is consistent
no sound, ran through a bunch of different troubleshooting HERE

the 10.04 install wouldn't start at all
BSD after the logo with progress boxes

I can download the various ISO's here on the notebook & save them in various places
USB, separate partition...
How can I get them to run?
I've gotten vague hints, that it is possible with UnetBootin...
I'm not attached to any particular flavor of linux as yet
I would like to try some of the different one's on this machine [running unbuntu 8.04] as if live cd...

You need to burn the ISO to CD or DVD, using an appropriate burning program to create a bootable disc.  One I've used is ImgBurn.

Once you've made your bootable disc, you may need to access your BIOS settings and set CD-ROM as the initial boot device. In other words, you need to boot from the CD/DVD, not from your hard drive. The notebook doesn't have a working CD DVD player

so that's not an optionThen i suggest Installation From USB Stick
the bios doesn't support from USB
which is why I've had to resort to using a HDD adapter which isn't quite getting me there
no sound!See http://support.gateway.com/s/USB/5502664/5502664faq18.shtml, titled How do I create a bootable USB Flash Drive?Requires a windows partition & to be able to boot from USB
neither of which are avaiable
I have 9.10 on a 8g stick & turned off all the boot options, still no joySorry, but I don't have any further suggestions.  Let's see whether someone else can chime in.Thanks for the effort
It isn't the run of the mill install Maybe try installing from over the internet. It's a bit complicated but it is the only way unless maybe with a floppy drive.

http://www.instantfundas.com/2007/08/install-any-linux-distro-directly-from.htmlThank I book MARKED that

I burned a couple of disc's & installed a dual boot of mint9 & 9.10.
the weirdness of my install was compounded by a setting that missing in BIOs being missing, causing me to have to boot in recovery mode once I upgraded to the 10.04lts

I still didn't have any sound, & was running through the steps [troubleshooting sound] on 10.04 & froze up,
I rebooted into mint [same cpu security fault] recovery & had sound
been using it for a bout 3 days

So far I like mint very much
better menus
all the stuff from unbuntu works
I've got a couple of 5g partitions for each OS & a 140g logical for files
so I should be able to use that little bit you gave me to do some more test [DISTROS] drives... Quote from: Garthhh on May 22, 2010, 07:47:20 AM

I thought your DVD drive was not working.

Well Mint is basically Ubuntu with custom menu (called the MintMenu) and pre-installed proprietary multimedia codecs. It uses the same package repositories and everything else. That is the advantage to Mint. The advantage to Ubuntu is that is is much more stable than Mint.the CD/DVD on the notebook doesn't work
I installed th HDD on my ol pentium III pc & set up a dual boot before reinstalling in my notebook

I've actually had the opposite experience with mint, my unbuntu seems to freeze
after a reboot on 10.04 or mint I get a black screen, when I boot into recovery
I get prompted to run
/usr/bin/check-bios-nx --verbose
which gives me this
This CPU is family 15, model 4, and has NX capabilities but is unable to
use these protective features because the BIOS is configured to disable
the capability.  Please enable this in your BIOS.  For more details, see:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Security/CPUFeatures

This notebook has an american megatrends bios, but I can't update as it is unique to gateway & lacking any windows OS I can't update through the gateway site
absolutely everything is enabled on every tab in bios
I can boot in recovery in something described low resolution mode, I can't see any difference

after a few days of switching back & forth between mint9 & 10.04lts, mint is giving me less trouble
10.04 seems to freeze from time to time & won't come back without a reboot

That is not necessarily a good thing. There are some things in the BIOS that are better to have disabled. And personally I hate American Megatrends.  The BIOs  is the short version, no cpu temp, no flash, probably some other stuff missing too
I suppose a few extra screens is the price I have to pay
I've never had decent support from Gateway, I'll certainly never buy anything new from them,
Silly thing is almost as bad as a dell...
