Solve : Iphone jailbreak?

Answer»

Quote

Just fyi, jailbreaking has not been legalized WORLDWIDE.
ANYWAY, the laws that govern this site are US laws, Utah to be exact i.e. if it's legal in Utah, it's legal here.

I am a firm BELIEVER in jailbreaking and unlocking your iPhone, but not in pirating software for anything, let alone an iPhone.
I fully agree. I would see no problem with someone "hacking" an iPhone and using Linux on it, but if they PIRATED Windows and used that on the iPhone then I'd see a major problem.

Solve : How to Backup iTunes Playlist?

Answer»

Hey, I have been wondering if there is anyway I can backup my itunes playlist.
Ideally I would like to backup the playlist which includes the list and music, but at the very least if I can backup at least a list of my playlists, that would do.

I have in the past been able to backup and transfer my LIBRARY but had to redo STEP by step the library.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks.http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1382
From the above Apple Support webpage:
There are several ways to BACK up your iTunes library, playlists, and iTunes Store purchases (including Applications PURCHASED from the App Store) for SAFEKEEPING.

Solve : Jailbreaking iphone 4?

Answer»

have downloaded and unzipped files but the cube icon for restore is not appearing on the desktop?HMMMM...... I THINK we're gonna need a BIT more information than that.....well, found out installing itunes first unlocks the little cube icon, however the whole recovery process is being a pain, GET error after error, keep fixing them only to get new errors, surely there must be a simpler way to do this, its taken 3 days so far and obviously the ph is unusable until this is resolved...I SEE.....What program are you trying to use to jailbreak? Redsn0w? iH8sn0w?

HELP PLEASE oh INCASE you havnt noticed I'm computer stupid, so be gentle on the instructions..deb files are meant to be used by jailbroken phones, which are GENERALLY more unstable when compared to stock iPhones, but they have Cydia, which is a big plus.

As for .ipa files, I will not help a google search on installing IPA files not downloaded with iTunes involves installing a tool which can be used to download things which involve copyright infringement. I may have said too much by this point...

Solve : How do I setup Gmail to change colors??

Answer»

Hi everyone,

How do I setup Gmail to change Gmail background, and font colors?

I am on a iPhone 4, but I can load PC sites. I WANT to change it in my settings, so that I can use my Gmail on my cell without typing on the main Gmail site. Could it be done?Have you tried the THEMES under GMail settings?
I just got done looking under settings at the top of the page, and I didn't see anything that says themes.

I see under settings it says things like accounts, or POP, or something like that.Could anyone help me, or was that the best that person do? I am slow at learning. Quote from: php111 on July 30, 2011, 05:48:26 AM

Here's a screen capture:

Keep in mind you may be looking at a portable version of Gmail on your iPhone.  I'm not sure but I wouldn't be surprised if either you don't have the Themes option or it's found somewhere else than it is with the regular web version of Gmail. Quote

That kind of comment and BUMPING are real good ways of motivating helpers!
Are you a moderator where you move this to the apple section? It worked on my PC, but not on my iPhone.

On my iPhone, when you click on desktop version it goes to desktop, then when you click standard version on the bottom, it goes straight to the mobile site.

I think in the Apple section, they MIGHT be able to help me. This topic I believe are for Windows apps. I didn't think this thread would get intenised where I need an Apple specialist.

Solve : Apple laptops hacked?

Answer» Here's an INTERESTING ARTICLE about how Apple laptops can be hacked. You need physical access to the machine to do that, THOUGH.

I found these quotes from him interesting:

Solve : Huh what!?

Answer» Hello,
what is it with 'APPLE computers'?. Is it different than other pc?. Why is this so called name seen again and again.
Any answers.

phantom
Totally different. Like Apples and Oranges.  An Apple is a different type of COMPUTER, like a CD is different from a CASSETTE tape. The architecture is different, the operating systems are different, etc. It does the same things, but gets there in different ways. Issues and resolutions for Apple computers are therefore different than for the more popular PC platform, and so this site has dedicated a separate category to them.An applicant for the SIN Bin?? I'm thinking about sticking to registered members & threads that really require a response from the poster other than 'thank you'.Go for it, but we have a strong conteneder here. i think this ONE has real potential.

Solve : getting files off bad hard drive??

Answer»

I have two POWERBOOK G4S, one old and one new, both upgraded ot Tiger (OS 10.4.1). With no warning the old Powerbook G4 now won't boot up--the spinning swirl goes on ENDLESSLY. You can hear the hard drive spinning irregularly--instead of a smooth whirr, it's in fits and starts. It's out of warranty and the Apple store confirmed the HD is in bad shape.
Disk Warrior didn't detect a HD. I've connected this one with my new Powerbook in hopes of getting off some of the files. I got it into target mode and I did get the icon on my new laptop but after an hour only one of the folders was beginning to show up. I tried the Data Rescue (both in the new laptop, and with the bootable CD in the old one) and it seemed to WORK but after seemingly having copied my files to the new laptop, they are nowhere to be found?
ANY OTHER IDEAS? THANK YOU!That's why you must backup, backup and backup. I believe if you have tried all of this it is hosed, unless you want to pay a data recovery company a lot of money.

Sorry.Yes--this is my son's laptop and i am always yelling at him to back up. I think he learned his lesson this time.
But believe it or not I got the HD to boot up from a system install disk and it acted absolutely normal for a few hours. During this time i got off everything essential and emailed it to myself and BURNED things to CDs.
Then it froze and has not booted up since--I and my son were very lucky!!Congratulations. Do you want to go to Vegas with me?

Hi, I'm relatively new to all this, and have just purchased a 12" iBook G4.
I was told the OFFICE package I bought was compatible with MACs, but when I PUT the disk in, the finder brings up a load of .EXE .DLL .IMI files, which, to my knowledge are all PC files?

15.

Solve : System software?

Answer»

My system Software bar is 99% full.  How can I free up space? Here are some ways to free up space on your Mac:

- Empty your trash.  The most basic thing is to empty your Trash regularly. Unless you're unsure of whether you may need a deleted file later, there's no reason to have a Trash brimming with files.

- Delete unused applications.  Your Mac comes with a lot of commercial applications on a trial basis (like MICROSOFT OFFICE, FileMaker etc.). If you know that you're not going to use those applications, remove them! Open your Applications folder (with command-shift-A in Finder), drag unused applications to the Trash and then empty the Trash.

- Remove downloaded image files.  Whenever you download applications to install, make sure you move or delete the disk image (.dmg) files.

- Clear web browser caches.  To improve performance, all web browsers store downloaded pages and files in a cache so that they can re-use those files (instead of re-downloading them) if you visit those same pages again. Clearing the cache could provide some free space. Although clearing the cache for security reasons is a good thing, it reflects very poorly on your disk space management skills if you have to do it to save space! Clearing the browser cache can be done in the your web browser's Preferences window (command-,).

- Remove disk space hogs.  Delete data that you don't need, or move them to an external hard disk, CDs or DVDs. To avoid wasting time in moving or DELETING files or folders that don't provide a huge benefit, first take STOCK of what you have and find out which folders or files occupy a lot of space. To do this, you could download and install an application, like the free application Disk Inventory X.  Run it and it will show you the space used by various kinds of files in a hierarchical order. Once you know which ones to delete, move them to the Trash (or hit command-delete), then empty it.

- Run maintenance utilities.  Free system maintenance utilities like MainMenu or Onyx can help clean up temporary files, system caches and logs.  This should also be considered more as a maintenance task than a disk space saving task.

- Archive your email.  Saving EVERY copy of every email to the harddrive may not be an option when space is tight. Consider archiving the email:  http://guides.macrumors.com/Archiving_E-Mail

More info here:  http://guides.macrumors.com/Freeing_Up_Hard_Disk_Space

Hope this helps!

Dell Quote

My system Software bar is 99% full.  How can I free up space?
If you are talking about System 7.x or Mac OS 8.x/9.x then do you mean in the About this Macintosh/About this Computer window? The RAM is dynamically allocated. Mac OS always uses almost all of the RAM it's allocated. There's no need to be worried.

Solve : Which Operating System Is most alike to apple??

Answer»

I just got a new laptop this christmas and my father installed linux on it. After messing around with it, i think linux is horrible!
My father has mac os x on his computer and i LOVE the mac operating systems. But sadly they are only compatible mac based computers. Does any one know if there are any other operating systems that are like mac os?Mac OS X is based on a BSD kernel, which you could GET on your laptop. However, it's not going to be anything like Mac OS X. Apple has put a lot of work into OS X and as far as I'm aware there is no clone or emulation that would allow you to run Mac OS X on your PC.

However, keep in mind that there are numerous different versions of Linux and Linux Graphical User INTERFACES that you can use on your computer. I'm not sure which version you're running on your computer currently however you may want to consider a different variant or maybe just run Microsoft WINDOWS on your laptop. The below link contains a listing of different Linux distros as well as the downloads for each of them.

http://www.linuxiso.org/

Finally, Apple also recently released Intel Macintosh computers. Which means they will need to port the Mac OS X to the Intel platform. This could potentially mean that Mac OS X may also work for non Apple computers. However, this is just speculation, but is still a possibility. What didn't you like and how much of a chance did you give it? There is a learning curce to any new OS, but the benefits outtweigh ANYTHING Microsoft has to OFFER unless you are a heavy gamer that requires that OS.

Solve : Can't get my iBook to start up on OS 9.2?

Answer»

I have a white iBook bought in the US in summer of 2003.  I have Panther and OS 9.2.2 on it.

The first problem is that my internet access only works on OS 9.2 on my iBook.  I have been trying to get it to work on OS X Panther, but without any luck.  Now, for some reason, I cannot get my iBook to start up on OS 9.  It will startup using the OS 9 INSTALLATION disk, but I can't connect to the Internet using that disk and it's not convenient anyway.

I have gone to Nework and when I try to restart on OS 9, I just get the little sound that says I cannot do that.  I have looked in the Console at the various logs.  The most recurrent message says something along the lines of

error running bliss

and then a lot of other STUFF that is not understandable to me.  I could copy down the exact error message but it is pretty long.

In investigating, I think I read that perhaps there was an application in the OS 9 folder or the desktop that is not OS 9 compatible?  For some reason it won't ALLOW to me restart on OS 9.

Any ideas about how to override the startup MECHANISM so that it starts up in OS 9?  I think I read a message in ONE of the logs saying that the disk was locked.  What does that mean exactly or what causes it??

I have fooled around with trying to start it up in different ways, but it always chooses the OS X startup disk.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

thanks steve

Solve : Old files?

Answer»

Hello there,
For a book I had to restore files from the early 90's on an old syquest datadisc 44Mb.
I cannot read the files I found in any application I know.
They also have an odd file icon:
It's a PAGE symbol with a background lightgray.
In the UPPER left corner is a big character "P" in black.
In the lower left corner, there's a blue box with 2 characters "DD"
And on the rightside in the middle stands a black box with white figures "4.0".
Can anyone tell me what application has been used for these files?
THX

I think Simple Text is LIKE the PC version of Notepad. It should let you see the text in the file.

Solve : Installation of Media Player?

Answer»

I copied the Mac VERSION of Windows Media Player to a CD and went to install it on my Mac, but the installer would not start.
I downloaded it from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=75ee2b64-5184-422a-91b6-20eed03e6175&DisplayLang=en

Whenever I try to open it, it says that the file cannot be opened because the PROGRAM that CREATED it could not be FOUND.

The file TYPE is: hqx
File name: WMPlayer7_1_EN.hqx

How do I install the HQX file?

( I am not very good with Macs)I figured it out.

The .hqx file is some sort of zip file.

To get WM7 installed, I had to copy it to my Desktop, drag the HQX icon over the Aladdin DropStuff(tm) program, let it change the file to .hqx.sit , open that file, let it copy the contents to the real file (which sends it to the desktop), then install it.

This is why I do not like Macs, no WinZip!
It took a while to figure it out, but once I found the DropStuff program, I started to get it.

Solve : Legality of using someone else's Installation disk?

Answer»

My wife has a 1.0GHZ OS 10.2.8 512MB 17"fp superdirve IMAC it is about 3 years old and she has mistakenly deleted most of the files on her computer. So....now several things don't work and She asked me to reinstall OSX on it. We have moved twice(military) since we bought the computer and I have lost the DVD to reinstall it.
1. is it legal for me to borrow someonelses DVD to install on my MAC?

2. if it is, is there a product key or serial that I need off the Mac before I wipe it?Where would I find it?

3. If it is legal, and I get the serial number, is there anyone willing to let me borrow their disk? FTP it to me?

Thanks Johnno its not legalWhy isn't it legal?Because then you COPY that disk and that is piracy. If you don't believe me, READ the user agreement, I think it is mentioned in there...Copying a disk is considered a serious crime and you could spend some jail time and have a big fine.
If it were sent through a FTP, it would still be illegal because it is copied. (hence the piracy)
If anything, ask a neighbor for the same installation disk if they have it. Don't ask for a copy of the disk. In fact, thats probably not GOOD advice. Do all you can to avoid breaking the law. In fact, it could be an even better idea to search eBay. That's how I got my disk, new and still sealed in a package. If I own a license, and I borrow the same version of software that came with my computer, then it isn't illegalI CALLED APPLE ABOUT THIS THIS WEEKEND. that was for you blackberry
I am not trying to STEAL anything I am sorry that I live in a time were integrity is compromised by...anythingWell, I am sure we are all glad that you did the right thing and called Apple to find out. I can think of a bunch of people that would have just downloaded a newer version from Kazaa.
Just keep in mind, don't install a newer version, only install the version that you own a license to.
Have a great day!

Solve : This is complex..?

Answer»

Right i have recording software like cubase (just as an example) and im soon to buy an Apple pc. Now i got my very important files on my EXTERNAL hard drive (formatted for XP windows), on it contains many songs and many softwares of recording etc.

Now i want to be able to get the files from my Windows XP to my new IMAC. So i got it on both pcs. I assume the music is easy enough as both read mp3. but my external hard drive would not be regocnised by apple as its formatted for XP. So how to i get the files off external hard drive on my XP to ship it over to apple imac. I dont know if the software would work mind.. as i think softwares are designed for specific O.S? But if theres a way apple can read PROGRAMS that i have on XP once transported accross that would be great. Its complex i know but im desperate here!

Maybe a network is possible between the two OPERATING systems ?YES, a network is possible, no, it will never read a microsoft specific formatting, and macintosh computer is NOT cinsidered a PC.

Solve : iTunes question?

Hey everyone, just a quick question.

When I play songs on my computer through iTunes they sometimes tend to slow, skip and stop....I've CHECKED the ACTUAL MP3 file and there is NOTHING wrong with it, it just seems to be when it's played through iTunes. When I'm listening to the songs on my iPod they are perfect.

I've got the latest iTunes player....ANYONE got any ideas what could be wrong?Itunes sucks that's whats wrong!

The only time i use it is for up dating my ipod.

Solve : Downloading Ipod Nano songs?

Answer»

Can't get songs to download in my Ipod Nano; tried many times. what am I doing wrong???Have you read the manual? Checked on Apple's web SITE? I would start there.are it legaly buyed songs or copied, perhaps -if it is a copied song- ITUNES can't format it to the aac format that you iPod need... do you use iTunes btw? Also if you had the songs in media player and the media player PUT some wierd copyright on it.. ITLL PREVENT Itunes from importing and converting it which is a pain in the rear end. If any one knows how to solve that then that would help me alot lolu need to rip the music to the mp3 player using media player which also rips the licences and enables them to play.

Solve : Exporting music.?

Answer»

How do I export music from my iPod to my computer? I recently purchased the entire discography of They MIGHT Be Giants, which is enough to fill up an iPod mini. I wish to back up what I currently have on my iPod mini so that I can put it back on when I purchase an iPod with more memory (which will probably involve handing in my mini for its warranty, there have been a few things screwing around that haven't been bothering me, but that my warranty covers NONE the less.)

So, how do I export music using iTunes? If I can't, is there a program that can.

P.S. Please don't tell me to copy and PASTE. I can ASSURE you I've already tried that.

P.P.S Oh, and if worse comes to worse I can open it up and manually drag everything, but I'd prefer not to as the system apple uses for storing music on the iPod is like a code, it would be *censored* to organise my music from just dragging it from my portable hard drive to my computer.Use Senuti mann !!! use Google to fine it !!

I'm sorry I don't have the book with me but the ANSWER was in the book I just picked up--Ipod: The Missing Manual.  It is very helpful.  I think there may have even been a program you could pick up off their website that did that.

I also learned that you can import lyrics into songs!   the book is very good.

Solve : Prompt on Apple??

Answer»

I just wanted to know if there was a DOS type of prompt on apple or not. If there is, how do you get to it, and are the commands the same as windows DOS?How are your Linux SKILLS these days? OS X is actually built on a UNIX-ish engine. Instead of making a travesty of an explanation, I'll just give you a link to WIKIPEDIA's fairly cogent description of the ARCHITECTURE of OS X and Darwin, the open source, UNIX-like OS developed by Apple.

To get to the terminal, just open up the utilities FOLDER, and the terminal application should be lurking therein. Its all Linux from there. Tuxfiles.org is a good place for Linux Noobs to get their flippers wet. Just be careful with that 'rm' command, k?

P.S. There is no Terminal style application for pre X versions. Sorry if you're still using system 6.0.1.

Solve : Networking windows with mac?

Answer»

Hi! i'd really like to know if it's possible to network a mac with windows. I have an ibook G4 on OSX and a pc running on win xp. The ibook has the AIRPORT thing and the pc has a wireless network adapter.
If it is possible please tell me how.
Thanks! I don't know.. but I know it's a possiblity.  Google is your friend.  Hi,

Since you have MacOS X and I assume you are running Win 2k or Win XP, it is easy to network yor Mac and Win for file sharing.

Start by skipping the AirPort, concent your Mac to the router via EEthernet cable. GO to SYSTEM Preferance choose Network and select Build-in Ethernet. In the Configure IPv4 select Using DHCP. KEEP the DHCP enabled on your router. The MAc will find an IP address. Make sure set any folders and/or files to share. You Mac must be in the same work group as you Win PCs. Then you are all set.

On my Mac, sometimes, when it freezes, I try to remember the RESTART key combination (APPLE,CTRL,POWER) but end up getting some other combination. And then this box COMES up that looks like an old DOS prompt.

It looks like this

 >

(yeah, really exciting, described with one text character and a space)
You can type stuff in, but when you press ENTER, it clears again.
Any idea of what it is?

(If you search Google, and found the answer, tell me what you searched for)Update:
This happens when you press the apple key, then the KEYBOARD power button.
Shows in a white box with a black border and black text.

Solve : What does "apple key" + "Power key" do??

Answer»

What is supposed to happen when the apple/cloverleaf key and the power button are pressed at the same time?
I get a weird command window. But I don't know what it is, or what it does.

(I did have a previous post on this, but never did get a responce)

Or at least, what is the name of the power button or the apple key?OK, so later after posting, I search and find out that the Apple/Cloverleaf key is called the command key (weird, I thought that there was a different key for that)
Supposedly, pressing CMD+Power brings up a debugger.
I searched Google for Mac Debugger, but didn't find much, except INFO about the developers of Mac who doomed people that had them forever.

And one know about the debugger? The built in debugger for Mac OS classic is so imensly simple that you already have to know the memory adresses and ALL the commands to use it. At Apples suppoert donwload site http://douwnloads.info.apple.com you can download MacsBug which is a more 'user frendly' debugger that the common PERSON would use to FIX comeputer frezzes. Such as you program froz and you have important work in the background you can hit CMD+Power to bring it up then put in the command for force quit. This allows you to fix simple probelms without an advanced knolage of Mac OS progemaing. (I would assume that the Mac OS X debugger would work the same way) I hope this helps.Well, I tried the link you gave me. It didn't work. I found another link:
ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/Tool_Chest/Testing_-_Debugging/Debuggers_-_dcmds/MacsBug_6.6.3.sit.hqx
It has the newer version, and I will give that a try. The PROBLEM I kept running into was getting out of the debugger.

CMD+POWER is supposed to move an item to the recycle bin, but it opens the debugger first.OK:
Update
I did find the degubber update. It does make it easier, but not by much.

Is there a way to get out of a basic freeze without loosing any information?
(You should see what this debugger looks like. More like a virus of the demented background)OH YES! Indeed my link faild becasue I speeling it wrong. http://downloads.info.apple.com Thats the right spelling. Oh and i think the command for forcequit is... .... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .. ... .. .. ... .. .. fr. g is to return to the GUI of Mac and help shoud give you a list of help topics. Quote

Solve : settings of power button?

Answer»

I recently began to UPDATE my Mac OS.
I have Macintosh OS 9.1
After UPGRADING to 9.1, I notices some changes. The major one is when I press the power button on my computer, instead of doing a nice proper SHUTDOWN, it shuts off immediately. Then I have to wait for DiskCheck to compete when starting up...
Is there a way to configure what happens when the power button is pressed?
Its an iMac.

I would say update to Mac OS 9.2 Quote

Is there a download location of the firmware upgrade for a Macintosh?
I was trying to upgrade from OS 9.1 to the one after that, and it told me that I needed to upgrade the firmware on my computer.
It said that the location of the firmware upgrade is on my INSTALLATION CD, but I don't have a CD-ROM DRIVE because it has been damaged.

Solve : mac help! i accidently dumped fonts to the desktop?

Answer»

HELP!
i accidently dumped 2000+ fonts onto my desktop and know i can't delete them. i've tried selecting them and hitting apple/delete and their still there. i've force quit the FINDER and it relaunches with all the fonts still there. the computer is not frozen...the clock is still running. i dont know what to do.Is this a Mac computer? Can you use System Restore? If this is a Mac computer, it probably won't have that feature.

Flameit is a mac osX.
Move them to another FOLDER on your Hard Drive.

(BTW: really, the problem is with the mac itsself. Just move it if you dont want to see the files. Or you could boot with a system disk by putting it into the CD drive and restarting while pushing the key "C" and then you should be able to move, delete, and whatever you want. But deleteing them might be a bad idea)no thanks to this forum...here is the solution to my problem.
shut off the computer > restart > log in under different user account > open system preferences > delete user account with fonts on desktop > pop up menu asked if you would like to immediately delete all files > click no > files will be deleted to the deleted users folder > create new user account (you can use the same user name and password) > SIGN off from current user and sign in as just created user account > open hard drive > select users > select deleted users > select deleted account (files will show up in the window) from there you can retrieve any files you did not wish to be deleted immediately, once your finished delete the entire old user account. and tada! no more fonts on the desktop and you managed to save your files. 8-)Welll, there are more forums. No one here is really "crazy" about Macs.
Sorry we couldent help much.

If I can find it, I will add the address to a great Mac forum.

Solve : Antivirus for Mac??

Answer»

I am looking for a FREE antivirus scanner for my stupid Macintosh.
YES THEY DO GET VIRUSES! And I don't want one.

Looking for something free... and simple... with on demand and on access scanner.

I have an iMac, 266MHz, 5GB HD, OS 9.Wow, this is hard! the only things I found was stuff for os 10, or os X, and it was(mostly) not free, and was (Barf) McAfee, and (run screaming, they have come to screw up macs too) Norton . I even went to the apple website and looked around and found a bunch of nothing. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2169862 I'm going to go to bed now, but I'll keep looking tomarrow, which is now, so in several hours.

ViperOH WOW! If I can find my old backup disks I have a freewaree antivirus YAY! ITS SOOOO COOL! It will ike take care of any pre 1994 virus and a few newer ones (I'm just jokeing but if you want i I can go and find it for you) Quote

Solve : Buy Mac ???

Answer»

Hye everbody !
I've got Windows XP and I'm pretty tired of all the problems it has ! Would you recommend buying a Macintosh OS ? Ic was thinking about buying the new Tiger Edition, but I don't know the advantages and disadvantages ! Please help !As you can probably see from the amount of posts in this section and from what I can tell you based off what I see from who visits and participates on this forum the majority of who's going to see this is the non-mac user so you're going to get a pretty bias opinion on this question. However, it is still a good question and I think if anyone has had experience with both Mac and PCs you should reply to this post. From my limited experience with the Mac (but still a lot more than none) I'll give you my suggestions.

Note: Apple recently released their Macintosh computers with Intel processors. Who knows a lot of these things I say could very likely change. I have no experience with the new Macs yet.

Advantages

 • Macs are a lot more user friendly at this point in time, you're not going to have to deal with any viruses, spyware, malware, etc. or if you do it's not going to be anything close to what a Windows user has to deal with.
 • Although still close, Macs still dominate the PCs when it comes to graphics, video editing, etc.
 • OS X and above is a BSD variant, which means if you wanted to you could learn some things about the *nix environment through the shell.
Disadvantages
 • Going to have to START over and learn everything again.
 • Unless your friends and family and other contacts are Mac PEOPLE you may run into a lot of issues as far as sharing programs and accessing data because their on different platforms. These are just problems though not impossibilities.
 • At this time the percentage of Mac vs. PC users (to my knowledge) is low. A lot more businesses are going to be using PC only or primarily PC based platforms, which may put you at a disadvantage.
 • Although the Mac does have a lot of software (programs/games/etc.) it's not anything close to the amount of programs available to Windows. Especially when it comes to free programs.
 • All software / games you've purchased will no longer work on the Mac. However, you may be able to get a emulator to get some or most of those programs to work on the Mac.
Just another thought, if you're so sick of Windows you may want to consider sticking with the PC platform but just switching your operating system to a Linux variant. A lot more stable and little or no viruses/spyware also. Thanks alot for the advice and your flow of knowledge !!   Because of the video-editing I think I will choose Macintosh !!   , but one more question, od Windows-programs work with Mac, if not it doesn't matter ! I'll use the godd*mn Windows    [smiley=angry.gif]

Anyways Thanks againNeed some sort of emulator to try to get PC programs to work on the Mac. Keep in mind that not all programs will work and sometimes when they do they may not be flawless.
http://www.macwindows.com/emulator.html

Access PC programs on the MAc using a program such as Virtual PC:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/virtualpc/virtualpc.aspx?pid=virtualpcMacintosh must die!  I don't know what you want out of this new computer you are looking for.  But i'd still have to say PC. Even if you do wan't it for video/music editing i'd still say get a PC.
Unless you are a film director or something and you are looking for that little extra.  :-?  :-?
But Windows Movie Maker and meny others have everything you will ever need on them.

And i would even disagee with Macs being the most user freindly, (only 1 button to click on the mouse so it look's nicer. Not to make it more simple, you actualy have to use the keyboard for a right click!)
All it is a more colourful and freindly looking GUI.

Also it depend's how long you have been using Windows for. If your quite experienced with Windows you will find the Mac very frustrating, ALL keyboard shortcuts have changed! even Alt+Ctrl+Del! (I'm not sure what it is now, but if you find out let me know!)

And as for errors, I've always thought of it being like this:
On a PC you may open and do pritty much what ever you like with any file,
on a Mac the settings and files you may use are limited (which probaly a big reason why hardly no one writes virus for Mac).
On the other hand if you do find any problems on the Mac your probaly not going to have any luck putting it back right without reformatting!

Well.. that's my rather long and biased review
I have been using Mac's for about 2 months now, and the ones im using are buggy and freeze up all the time,
and no admin's have even atempted to try and get them running properly again...
Sorry if it's too late and you already bought one, and all I have done is insulted your new computer!  And you are a month late in doing so!   :-/
Well it is a question that will probaly be asked alot. 171 views, there is a chance i helped someone. No harm in trying anyway.

Besides he might still be here...

...

to be honest... i was just bored!!    Ted2
Windows Movie Maker is certainly not enough 4 Video editing and by now I haven't founf a really good program 4 editing. (Except MAGIX Video Deluxe 2005 for video Editing and sum other programs 4 DVD-Making... I made a list of reivews which I can't find any more on the forums ). I've uninstalled nearly all windows-programs (all rubbish) except the stuff like Microsoft Office. I surely am looking 4 something extra , cause' Windows really does GO on my nerves. Keeps on crashing unexpectedly, after the night before it all works well !
And as 4 all that stuff of crashing windows... up until now I couldn't really get back any stuff from Windows. The only way I found 2 do that was buy another HD, install Windows on that 1 and "recover" everthing from the other HD. The disadvantage --> u need 2 reinstall everything again (and to be honest I reinstalled Windows half a year ago and I'm still not finished with reinstallin' evertyhing). Mac can't really be that worse than windows and I'm gonna install Mac on anthoer HD anyway..just for a try.
Thanx anyway...eventhough u were bored      Oh god, I was stalking around here cuz i was bored and when I saw the 2nd post of advantages and disadvantages.. I JUST HAD TO REZ THIS!

Alright first of all..

Advantages

    * Macs are a lot more user friendly at this point in time, you're not going to have to deal with any viruses, spyware, malware, etc. or if you do it's not going to be anything close to what a Windows user has to deal with.

Defending agaisnt spyware and such is based on user intelligence.. all you need is a firewall and a capable AV and your set, 3 years with this comp and only got ONE virus, which was through a lan network with my friend.

    * Although still close, Macs still dominate the PCs when it comes to graphics, video editing, etc.

Macs DO NOT dominate.. For the price of a 1.5k mac, you can easily build a 3800+ X2 amd or get a opteron and OC it to practically huge advances in Ghz over the intel mac processors... Graphics cards also, as the 7800GT is a good well around card and beats the ATI competition that are used in the intel macs hands down.
In my shop, I have Mac OS 8 on my DESKTOP Mac, OS X on my Mac mini, Win2k on my PC desktop and Win XP on my laptop. As far as I concern, there is no one OS better then the other. They all have their pros and cons. I haven't had any majoy problems with my Win XP pro (yet). However, I dislike the GUI. I rather use Win 2k then the XP.And I love the Mac OS X because of its pleasent looking GUI.MAC RULES!!!!! 8-) The definitive answer?I saw video editing mentioned. Anyone who says the Mac is the answer should watch this (beware of profanity in 2 or 3 places):

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3775428884234439298&q=apple+mac&pl=truei know some people who own mac and it wouldn't read a mp3 cd i sent down there nor would it see a vcd i sent mac are crap

Solve : gmail/aol freezes?

Trying to help a friend who has an IMac. SORRY, I don't know much else, being a Windows guy.

Anyway, he uses AOL. When he tries to access www.gmail.com, it winds up with a color-spin-wheel INSTEAD of a mouse cursor.

There it remains until you stop the task.

So he has talked to "experts" over the phone for hours and re-installed AOL, etc.

My main question: Can AOL users access GMail?

Mac
Have your friend go here:

Solve : iMap?

Answer»

I just recently just bought a new MACBOOK and while I was at the Apple store the salesman showed me how to turn on iMap for my gmail account.  He told me that USING the mail feature on my mac and the imap I would be ABLE to see my gmail inbox and be able to make changes that would affect both accounts. Meaning if I delete an e-mail in mail it would delete online in my gmail account. However I find that this is not the case.  If I check my gmail account on a different computer it reads as if I've never checked it at all even though I have on Mail.  Was the salesman wrong or did I set up iMap and mail incorrectly?

Thank you for all the help in advance! (Just FYI, IMAP is not part of the Apple propaganda... in other words: Its an acronym, not something that is supposed to sound cool by having a lowercase letter "i"...)
Anyways, it sounds like you are using either POP3 or you didnt set up IMAP right.
IMAP means: Internet Message Access Protocol

Go into Gmail on the web, and click Settings at the top right of your screen.
Then go to the tab that says: "Forwarding and POP/IMAP"
Make sure IMAP is enabled.
Then go to Configuration Instructions (or click here to see it)

Configuration instructions for Apple Mail version 3.0 Leopard, located here:

Solve : Mac\linux computer?

Answer»

ok, so RECENTLY i got my Ubuntu cd's and one of them happens to be a version that will run on mac, so i looked on ebay, and i can get alot of good imac's for cheap (under or just over 100 bucks), i was hoping to get atleast a 400mhz, with 128 or 256 ram, and have a dual boot with whatever mac it comes with, and my ubuntu... is this possiblie? i have never heard of a dual boot on a mac, but then again i havnt heard much of anything about MACS...Have a read:

http://www.askdavetaylor.com/how_do_i_dual_boot_ubuntu_linux_mac_os_x.htmlcant i just use teh GRUB boot loader? like i did for XP, or do i need to use another?

EDIT: also, what do i use in mac to CREATE the linux partition?I  don't run Macs, so you should ask Dave Taylor. You probably shouldn't put Ubuntu on a machine any slower than 900mhz. I have it running now on a 900mhz machine with 256 mb of RAM. It's tolerable but still a little laggy on that system.i did LOOK on ebay and there are some ole GX110 P3's that would work, i want to get one of the REALLY tiny ones, so i can put it in my ole cd player or vcr, just for the heck of itehh... I have never heard of such a thing excataly. Mac OS 9 comes with a version of the Startup Disk control panel that will allow ou to choose the startup voluem. Most likely though it would intsall on a Mac OS standered artition. It may also start on a DOS or ProDOS partition. For this you may need an older version of the Drive Setup app. Sounds like an older mac like a PPC 750 would not be preferable but a G4 would be fine. Dual boot with something can require a larger HDD also. Thinking about it your more likely to just simply use Mac OS 8.6 or 9 on an older machene. If you have a newer machene that would ue X then just use Microsoft VPC and install Linux on that.
