Solve : Choosing a Linux Distro?

Answer»

well for the matter of general discussion whether the PROBLEM is solved ,i prefer GNOME , because i feel its light weight then the other environments .

and beauty of linux variants is that , they come with a live CD you can try it out with some options and select the best one whichever suits you :]

currently , my machine is running on ubuntu lucid .

fedora , linux mint , open SUSE are also good
I have Linux mint on my dell 1705 laptop with Windows XP pro.
It was so easy to install. I like it. Performance is not an issue for me. Ease of use is what I need. No trouble finding my wireless home LAN. Works great. Some others I tried did do not play well with lmy laptop.

Two things:

-GNOME isn't a distro, it's a desktop environment (which you somewhat alluded too

-It's not the lightest: the lightest is probably LXDE or XFCE. GNOME and KDE are the two heaviest desktop environments in common use.

Mint 7 hardly found anything on my laptop, and it's network connection kept dropping off when I finally got it working. Mint 10 however had absolutely no issues at all, and it has become my main OS on my laptop.
This is my problem about this activities:

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
Develop a utility that will enhance the current file management and
organization functions of Linux.

You may use existing file management commands to create the utility.
Look for options that were not explored by the COMMAND yet, then
enhance the command by reinventing its name and adding this option
to its current options.

You may combine related commands into one script also.
Example:
copyormovefile (-c -m) filename/s
where:
copyormovefile is the name of the utility
(-c -m) are options that will do the following:
-c for copying filename/s
-m for moving filename/s

It depends how you will use the computer. if you want a stable distro go for debian or ubuntu, but does because the updates is less than others like fedora that update more often. Or if you want you can go with arch linux, a very good light system, but have to deal with it a little more for get a good final system, but you decide what you want. i'll recommend you go with fedora, with it you good a very good distro, have the ultimates update and its stable and have the necessary to work with it.Ccamol,

Back in late 1991, when Linux first hit the 'Net, there were no distributions per se. The closest thing was HJ Lu's Boot/Root floppies. They were 5.25" diskettes that could be used to get a Linux system running. You booted from the boot disk and then, when prompted, inserted the root disk. After a while you got a command prompt.

One could argue taht the bad guys have little interest in going after old versions. There aer some reasons to include older versions. They have stood the test of time.

That's not how security works though, look at a list of CVEs for Linux along with various included utilities), there have been loads of security bugs that have been fixed. For example, if you ran a distro from 2012 you would still be vulnerable to well published attacks such as Heartbleed and Shellshock.camerongray, good answer.

Solve : --request "How To Download" puppy LINUX tutorial--?

Answer»

can someone please give me a FULLY tutorial how to download puppy linux?

[edited by Calum to REMOVE IMAGE and scrolling text, it stretched the page and made the post hard to read]Sure, here: http://puppylinux.org/wikka/PuppyLinuxMainPage
ok first you download the .iso file from the puppy linux website. get this program http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/

once you have the program installed and the .iso get a burnable disk and burn, NOT THE FILE, but make sure your putting whats in the file on the disk. kinda like UNPACKING a .zip folder. (this REALLY doesnt belong but a .iso is a compressed copy of a disk. it can be decompressed using a program like winace. if you burn the disk correctly you decompress the file in the process, and hopefully make it bootable). simply put in the disk, turn off your pc, then turn your pc back on. if it doesnt load puppy linux you did it wrong.

this also probably doesnt fit but...

if you have an OLD pc and dont have a CD drive you can create a bootable floppy that will start the install process from your desktop, but i dont know how... ive just HEARD it can be done.I have a better idea: instead of downloading anything, go to edmundsenterprises.com and buy a Puppy cd for 99c. I did and I'm using it to make this post.I have an even better idea.... check the post date on a thread before replying. Maybe the topic is already dead and the op is long gone.

Solve : Installing Ubuntu when I still have XP?

Answer»

For the moment I have windows XP SP2, I want to install Ubuntu too and have the possibility to choose when I boot.
My HD is partitioned in 3 parts, C:/ Windows XP + programs, D:/ empty for the moment but I would install ubuntu +progs there, E:/ Documents
Is it possible to do this?
And how do I have to do this?
I have the CD.

Thanks in advance

Jonas It certainly is possible. The most current Ubuntu install walks you through it. Just tell it you want to install onto that second partition which is currently D:. You might want to split it into two partitions, one for the Linux swap partition. Loads of documentation on the Ubuntu wiki about that.

As to how best to partition? There are probably as many opinions on that as there are users...I was going to install it to my extrenal drive but then I got a MESSAGE saying it would format all my other drives in order to install it to the external drive???
Where is that good for?

Jonas If ubuntu doesn't let you install the way you want, try a different distroI have had SEVERAL different versions of Ubuntu installed on a hard drive where the first partition is WindowsXP Pro. This has worked out very well; I have never tried it on an external drive.
My hard drive is 120 gigs. First I divided it into two primary (ie. bootable ) partitions; the first was 100 gigs and contained WinXP, the second I formatted as ext3. Next I divided the 100 gig partition, making 30 gig for WinXP, and an extended partition 70 gigs, Fat32, which would be ACCESSIBLE by both operating systems.
Next, I divided the second partition, making a 2 gig swap partition, and leaving about 28 gig for Ubuntu. I PUT the install disk in the cd tray and rebooted and had no trouble installing. I have done this with Ubuntu Dapper, Ubuntu Feisty, and will
soon install the Gibbon (7.10) the same way. Really though, you should ask your questions on the Ubuntu forum and look around the documentation and wiki too.
They really give excellent advice there.

Solve : RSDP?

Answer»

I TRIED to install UBUNTU Linux on an old computer to try Linux out and see if i liked it and it CAME up with "Unable to locate RSDP". I have no IDEA what this means? Any suggestions what to try please? How did you format your hard drive? FAT32, Reiser, ext2, ext3?
Try installing again and format as ext3.
How did you partition your hard drive?

Did you Google "unable to locate rsdp"?
Thanks. Stupid of me, should have Googled!
I found:
"How old is the PC? Does it support ACPI? Even if it does, I've found it to be a bit variable - I have one PC which will run with ACPI enabled under some distros (Ubuntu, Knopix - both Debian based) but not under Mandrake or SuSE (haven't tried FEDORA on that one).

Try adding acpi=off to the kernel boot parameters and see if it boots OK."

"RSDP: Root System Description Pointer"

"what you can do is press f6 then f3 then live acpi=off"
I will give it a try, if it fails will post up the other info asked for.
Thanks again for the suggestion.

Solve : problem with ubuntu boot?

Answer»

i have an old compaq armada 800MHz, 256MB of RAM, pentiumIII, and i succesfully INSTALLED ubuntu. well, after INSTALLATION is complete, and i REMOVE the installation disc, while its booting up i get an error that says "mounting root file system not found."
but if i keep the disc in there, it will BOOT with no problem.

what does this mean?when you say you keep the disc in and it boots, does that mean the live system boots?

often i find that installing with the alternate CD works sometimes, but by the looks of this it seems that may not work. worth a shot though. It sounds like with the disc in it is booting to LiveCD. Which is running off of the CD not your computer.

As for the "mounting root file system not found" it sounds like something went from with the installation. Does it load to the GRUB boot screen?

If you have no data to loose, a REINSTALL wouldn't hurt anything.

Solve : installing Ubuntu on Dual Boot with Vista?

Answer»

hi all,
i order 2 cds of ubuntu for me and my friend.
i want to know
1. can i dual boot with vista
2. are my hardware specs compatible (listing in my sig)
3. is Ubuntu as good backup os?
___________________________________
Deatailed look at my specs.
Realtek 8185 b/g extensible WIRELESS device
Marvell Yukon 88E8038 PCI-E Ethernet Controller
Agere Systems HDA Modem
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T10N ATA Device (DVD drive)
It is possible. As far as being a backup OS, I guess it could be. But if you're just wanting it a something that could be USED in an emergency or you simply want to just play with Ubuntu I'd suggest simply booting from a Ubuntu bootable CD.

However, if you do want to dual boot try the below steps.

http://apcmag.com/5046/how_to_dual_boot_vista_with_linux_vista_installed_firstyes it is possible, and I believe it is very simple to do. (haven't used ubuntu much). linux needs to be installed after windows though, so if you're starting from scratch, don't install linux first.
I would recommend installing linux instead of just using the livecd because you'll get much better responsiveness in your computer that way. You'll also be able to install programs and save files on the hard drive so you don't have to load all of your customizations every time you boot into linux.
You'll learn a whole lot more about linux if you actually install it and run it for a while.
I just installed Ubuntu today...

It's running as the only OS on this PC, but if all goes well, I might end-up dual booting with Win XP Pro on my other PC (I got it free, I'm no where near loaded).

It seems cool. It also seems to respond quicker than XP...maybe better use of system resources?

ANYWAYS, go for it. You'll learn a lot more having a play around than you will from a book.Yeah, it runs quicker because it has a lot less crap than all the Microsoft OS's. Dual booting is easy - Install Microsoft first, run through Ubuntu install second. It does the rest. Installs a thing called GRUB which allows you to choose which OS you want to boot from. And the new Ubuntu (7.10) supports writing to NTFS partitions (the windows ones).

Solve : Linux Distro Suggestion needed for old Laptop with Floppy drive?

Answer»

Hello, I have an old Toshiba Pentium 1 -166 Mhz MMX with 32MB Ram, 2GB HD, and Floppy Drive. This laptop is just about useless for anything without a CD-Rom and its BIOS is so old that even if it did have a CD-Rom it would not be able to boot from the CD Drive.

So I need a suggestion for a good Linux Distro to run on it that can be installed via floppy disks. I'd like to have KDE and a GUI, but I am thinking that I might have to install Mandrake or Slackware on it without a GUI since it only has a 2GB HD.

Any suggestions other than throwing the laptop away and getting something better. One idea was to USE it as a DHCP Server with Freesco, but if I could use the laptop for more than a DHCP server that would be great.

As far as what I would liek to do with it to match the distro up with my needs, I'd like a GUI if possible, but if I have to deal with just raw Linux, so be it. If it was without a GUI it wouldnt be very useful for anything other than hosting services like MAIL, DHCP, etc

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions.

Dave check out www.distrowatch.com and www.linux.org/dist/Thanks, I'll check those out!www.linuxquestions.org too.KDE is going to HURT in 32MB. Far better to use one of the streamlined window managers like xfce. (That used to be the default desktop for VectorLinux if MEMORY serves.) In fact, why not hunt for some floppy installation HowTos for VectorLinux?

Quite a while ago I installed SuSE Linux on a server using three FLOPPIES and a NETWORK connection (which pulled the rest of the distribution over FTP on the fly).

Solve : cannot write to hard disk partition?

Answer»

Hello everyone,
I am currently using Linux Feisty Fawn, and I want to ASK a question. I have a partition which I want to use to save important files,ETC. I can write to this partition only if I login as root. Can I change somehow the write permissions so that I won't have to login and execute everything from the shell every time I want to save or edit something there? I formatted the partition to fat32 file system.
Thank you.Fat32 partitions are not compatible by default with Ubuntu (except for the new one, Gutsy Gibbon or 7.10 - this can write to all Windows file systems). If you just want it to put files on, format it to and ext-3 file system. If this doesn't help, login as root and in the terminal change DIRECTORY to the mount point for your hard drive, and change the permissions using
chmod 777 /mnt/hda1 (or WHATEVER your drive is, and 777 makes it accessible to EVERYBODY, so change the numbers according to what you want - they are octal)

Solve : Networking with Ubuntu...?

Answer»

Hi guys,

Just wondering how I would go about it...

At the moment I'm not setting ONE up, but in future it would be nice to know how to.

Example, I know for MS Networks, anything over 10 machines really needs a Windows Server platform in it, is there a similar cap in Linux/Ubuntu?

Also, the "Server Edition"...is that just for web-servers or am I way too naive?

Once I get some funds together to build a decent machine, I'd like to set-up a virtual network, and maybe one-day roll one out properly...

Is it straight forward? What are you really trying to do?

Re this statement: "I know for MS Networks, anything over 10 machines really needs a Windows Server platform in it". That's just not the case.

Ubuntu server is more geared towards server use - file server, web server, database server, etc, etc. The desktop edition is more geared towards desktop use - GUI, etc. But you can install any Ubuntu package on either edition. It simply gives you a more appropriate starting point, without any limitation.

Setting up networking is very straightforward, but you may find it helps if you understand the concepts contained >here<.For networking linux with windows you will need to configure samba. Samba can be set up as a client to a windows network (workgroup or domain). I haven't set up samba as a domain controller, but I think it can be configured that way as well.
It can although full Active Directory integration is some way up. Having SAID that, Microsoft recently (amazingly) gave some technical specs for AD to the Samba team, so we can expect some very interesting developments on that front in the near future.Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on January 15, 2008, 05:48:16 AM

Re this statement: "I know for MS Networks, anything over 10 machines really needs a Windows Server platform in it". That's just not the case.

Well, atm, nothing. But I'd like to design (and possibly implement (virtually)) a pure linux network, and also a mixed network...just for the exercise really.

How do you mean? The workgroup function in XP only works for upto 10 machines...after that you need a Server OS in the network for all the machines to see & speak to each other...don't you?Quote from: Sid on January 15, 2008, 05:01:50 PM

No, not at all. Where did you read that? Are you thinking of the standard 5/10 user licences you get with a Windows Server install?Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on January 17, 2008, 10:36:35 AM

No no...

When you've got basic XP machines (for ex lets say XP Pro), as I understood it, you could only join 10 machines to one workgroup (p2p network) at anyone time. After that you'd need to setup a server/client network, with a NOS installed.Nope, that's just not correct. There is no such limitation. You can have hundreds of computers (or more) joined to the same workgroup. Whether you'd want to do it that way though - that's a different matter.Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on January 18, 2008, 02:39:52 AM

I can't vouch for the validity of the statements there.

Ta very much for clearing that all up!

I take it Ubuntu Server Edition is suitable for file/print server/client topographies, or do you not really need to bother?

Example:
20 Machines, 10 printers and Internet comes through a router into the LAN, could this be done with just Ubuntu desktop? It's better to let a server get on with the job of being a server rather than faffing AROUND with desktop applications (the obvious exception being TERMINAL server/thin client environments). And for this, you're best off starting with a server-optimised distribution. In my opinion, Ubuntu Server is good but CentOS is better for this.

Solve : mounting ntfs file system...?

hello everyone,
Am using Fedora core 6 ..... but i have a problem in mounting a NTFS file system.... can any one help me on how to do this..... i have tried the basic command.....
$mount /dev/sda2 discA
$mount -t ntfs /dev/sda2 discA

any thing wrong in the command line plz... MAKE SURE you have the package that allows NTFS File Systems to be mounted installed. Most distros come with it. But some may not.try it with a slash before the discA: "mount /dev/sda2 /discA"
does the directory /discA exist? If not, create it with mkdir

Am using Fedora core 6

Have you considered upgrading to Fedora 8? It has WAY better SUPPORT for hardware than FC6 did, including WORKING NTFS support as soon as Fedora 8 is installed. No need to install anything extra after.

Just to give you an idea of how much has changed, when I installed FC6, I had to also fiddle with getting my sound, video, network, webcam, codecs, and NTFS support to work. When I installed Fedora 8, I only had to do codecs and my webcam. Everything else was ready from the installation. And for NTFS, mounting was automatic. No need to edit any files or enter any commands in the terminal.

Or, as in line with the forum title, if you're using Linux, which distro are you using?

In Ubuntu you just right click the partition and select properties.http://linux.about.com/b/2007/09/10/check-disk-space-with-the-commands-du-and-df.htm
Quote
Check Disk Space with the Commands du and df
A quick way to get a summary of the available and USED disk space on your Linux system is to type in the df command in a terminal window. The command df stands for "disk filesystem". With the -h option (df -h) it shows the disk space in "human readable" form, which in this case MEANS, it gives you the units along with the numbers.

The du command on the other HAND shows the disk space used by the files and directories in the CURRENT directory. Again the -h option (df -h) makes the output easier to comprehend.

Solve : how to find files across multiple directories, like $PATH?

Hello all,

I am TRYING to find all the commands in my $PATH that process pdf files. So I TRIED this:

$ echo $PATH
/usr/bin/override:/usr/sys:/usr/bin:/bin
$ echo $PATH | sed 's/:/ /g' | xargs -L 1 -i find {} -name "*pdf*" -ls

and got the error:

find: cannot open /usr/bin/override /usr/sys /usr/bin /bin : No such file or directory

I don't quite get what I am doing wrong. I am expecting xargs to parse 1 arg at a TIME from the sed command, each arg being blank-delimited (as per man xargs page).

I know there is a file /usr/bin/opdfupld - not what I am looking for, but at least the name matches - why can't it be FOUND?

Does anyone have a better suggestion, or an idea what I am doing wrong? Thanks! Dave

I want to get Linux. (Dual-boot with XP) Which distro should I get? Is there a point in getting the 64 bit version? (my computer supports 64 bit). What is the difference between the different desktops (KDE/Gnome)? And will my hardware work properly? My main concern is wireless internet, I use a USB adapter, it is a TRENDnet TEW-444UB. Also, will my printer work? It's on another computer on the network running XP. My specs:

There is no one, simple answer to this question.

Expect to try several, over time. Knowing that, many folks will TELL you to just pick one and jump in.

Or - - you can do a lot of reading, until one strikes your fancy as being more for you than another.
A good place to do a LOT of reading is www.linuxquestions.org

There are plenty more like it too. You can search there for them if you like.

I have a ubuntu disc. How do I find out if my wireless will work? I think I'm going to install ubuntu because one of my friends said it's pretty good. Is it worth DOWNLOADING the latest version? I have a 7.04 disc. The Ubuntu disc is a live cd so you can try out Ubuntu without installing anything. This is a good way to find out if your wireless NIC is detected "out of the box".
Wireless support recieved major improvements in 7.10 so I would say yes it would probably be a good idea to get that version. You can install 7.04 and just update to 7.10 though if you have a wired connection handy.Okay, I'm going to install 7.04, I can get the updates (I'll just bring the modem to this computer). Will post back when I'm finished.
OK I installed it. 2 problems. Wireless doesn't work. Its a TRENDnet TEW-444UB USB adapter. The light on it doesn't light up. Second problem, resolution is too low. It won't go higher than 1024X768. I need it to be on 1440X900 (widescreen).

EDIT: Resolution problem fixed by editing xorg.conf

EDIT 2: I found this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-wireless-networking-41/ndiswrapper-cant-initialize-my-wifi-usb-device-577441/
When I try to run those commands in terminal, the first time it told me to run some other command which downloaded ndiswrapper, then when I tried to run the command from that thread it said "Error: no versions of ndiswrapper found!" Later, when I tried to install it manually by downloading it from the ndiswrapper website and tried to run the command again, i got the same error message. What happened?

EDIT 3:Got the command to run properly without any errors, but the wireless thing still isn't working. What the *censored* is wrong now?I fixed everything I got the latest version (7.10) and installed some GUI thing for the ndiswrapper thing and now everything works properly. Good to hear you got it working. False alarm Every time I reboot the wireless dies and the only way to get it to work again is to reinstall the drivers. It's the same problem as the guy in the linuxquestions thread I posted above (link)

EDIT:Here's an idea: just reinstall the drivers every time the computer starts. How do I make it so that it runs commands on startup?Wireless works almost perfectly now, the remaining problems aren't important and I'm too lazy to fix them. There is just one problem remaining. I can't print properly. The printer is on a computer on the network running XP. I installed the printer by going to system>administration>printing and using the wizard. When I try to print, there are no errors on the Ubuntu computer. The printer starts making the usual noises it always does before it prints, but it just stops right when it's supposed to actually start printing. In the printing queue on the XP computer, it shows a document with some random name (I can't remember at the moment) which isn't the name of the document I'm printing. In the COLUMN that shows the size of the file it showed sixty-something kilobytes out of 2.something megabytes. I can't cancel it unless I turn the printer off. I can't find anything in google. This is the last thing that isn't working.Still having problems?im not sure if this .deb file will work with you, but it worked with me. i see in your signature you have "ubuntu user" and thats what worked with me. (oh yes it is a wireless driver. worked perfectly.)

It does happen!!!the first time i burned KUBUNTU it said it couldnt load vmlinuz because the file was chipped off a few megabytes. it wasnt a bad burn i did it on 2x it was a bad DOWNLOAD... my wireless is buggy and old... so i downloaded UBUNTU through a wire and it worked perfectly.

Solve : best linux?

this is an OPINION... state witch and a reason or 2 why. im dual booting ubuntu but would like to have a changeThe best linux is definitely kernel 2.6

I've always gone with opensuse because it comes with the most preinstalled packages and has the best control panel I've seen for linux.i just went with ubuntu because it was the first one i found when i was googling.... and i want more than one responce :-pI've used Ubuntu, Puppy Linux, DSL, SuSE, Knoppix, SLAX, and have tried Arch but NEVER got that working.

Ubuntu and OpenSuSE are my recommendations. They are both put together very well. Definitely distros worth starting out on.i haven't used many, but my fave is probably kubuntu, because kde is fun. :PTHAT depends on what your looking for, ease of use then go with one of the Ubuntu, Suse, PClinux, Mandriva distro's will fill the bill. If you want to get into the inner WORKINGS of Linux like editing config files, then go with Slackware, anyone of the BSD distro's, or Gentoo those will give you a rewarding challenge.Quote from: alpenadiver on December 19, 2007, 05:46:52 PM

Have you looked at DistroWatch ?

http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=majorim not asking for what is best for me, but what is your PREFERRED linux/unix os.OpenSuSE IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what I like may be not what you like. This is very subjective. The best WAY to come up with a conclusion for yourself is to take all that is recommended in this thread (or some other distros), install them, play with them, and find your own nirvana.are you not getting what the op is saying...? What do you think is the best?
He's just trying to get an idea what the average person thinks is best...... it would be better if this was a POLL i just want the most used/preferred linux out there!!! im using knoppix/windows myself (dual booting) but just isnt giving the satisfaction... yes i swiched from ubuntu to knoppix recently... just please answer your opininon...I like Ubuntu.

I'm dual booting 7.10 and XP Pro, and I'm using Ubuntu more often now.

I think it's because it's a lot more popular, and finding info and how-to docs is quite easy.

Also, it's the major Linux distro, or at least the one I heard about more often.

I like GNOME and how stable everything is. I might try Kubuntu at some point, because I've heard Linux MCE is built to go on top of it, and one day I'd like a decent (free!) Media Centre.

The thing that got me to jump in a try Linux was native support for reading and writing to NTFS, so I can easily edit, and add files to my windows partitions.

I like the idea of Beryl, but without a graphics card I'm limited to no effects at all

Tbh, I was amazed at how quickly the install went, and how simple it was to re-size the partitions with very little amounts of research. The one thing that did confuse me slightly was the partitioning screen. A bit more clarity there might really HELP things along, as a more graphical interface, like Disk Management in XP (right click My Computer -> Manage -> Disk Management) might appeal more to the more apprehensive of us. Who knows, I might learn how to code, and get one designed. That's the great thing about Linux in general, users can learn how to create things for it!

So yeah, to answer your question, Ubuntu 7.10.i thought we were on 7.04 feisty fawn...

Okay I'm new to Linux since I never MESSED with it before. So how do you network it with windows? Any other help about the os would help. to HOOK up a linux box to a windows network, you will need to USE Samba. Most linux distros have samba INSTALLED. open the control PANEL and look around for samba and you'll have to configure it to hook up to your windows network. you'll need to tell it what the name of the network is. I don't think there is a whole lot more to change.

PC specs (If you need them):
1GB RAM
2.8 GHZ Pentium Proccessor
250 gb hdd (3 partitions)

I think there the main ones.

Thanks a million, from JahuroCheck out the Ubuntu forums, there's a guide somewhere on how to dual boot with XP and Ubuntu with Ubuntu on first, which is essentially what you're trying to do.

here is a decent guide
win xp LIKES to dominate... you have to edit your boot.ini file. if your dual booting windows and ubuntu like i am it should look like this:

[boot loader]
timeout=15
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)PARTITION(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"/noexecute=optin /fastdetect
c:\wubildr.mbr="Ubuntu"

the PART that says [boot loader] decides what AUTOMATICALLY runs if the timeout=15 runs out... in my case its win xp

the two options to run multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition"/noexecute=optin /fastdetect and c:\wubildr.mbr="Ubuntu"

my instructions are vague i know... but just google boot.ini ubuntu

Solve : Keeping NTFS volumes mounted...Ubuntu 7.10?

Answer»

Hi guys,

I've started using Ubuntu 7.10 now, and I'd like to keep the NTFS volumes (I've got 5 partitions) mounted, and if possible on the desktop.

Well, I say mounted, I assume that's the correct terminology?

Anyway, I've had a look on the wiki, and there is a line to enter in the terminal that, I think, is supposed to stop the drives from un-mounting on reboot, but they keep un-mounting.

Any help is well appreciated.

Cheers! You have to edit fstab to make NTFS drive mount automatically at boot. Here's a good explanation of it:

http://www.arsgeek.com/?p=585I sorted the problem.

Like you said I had to edit Fstab, but that blog you linked me to just confused me more.

I've written how I did it on my myspace blog.

With 7.10 NTFS read&write is native, so I didn't need to install ANYTHING else.

Thanks for the help though, appreciate it.what the heck is fstab...Quote from: liambiscuit on December 27, 2007, 06:36:30 PM

what the heck is fstab...

The fstab file is the file system table. It's common in Unix and Linux. BASICALLY it holds all the information for all drives (partitions) and where and how to mount them either when the system is booted or when the 'mount -a' command is used.i know -a MEANS abort... so mount -a must be to disconnect a drive/device, but the rest i had NO FREAKIN CLUE what it meant....Quote from: liambiscuit on December 28, 2007, 07:13:23 PM
i know -a means abort...

Eh, no. mount -a automatically mounts all drives from the fstab except for those with the 'noauto' tag. To remove a mounted drive, the command is 'umount' (yes, umount, not unmount).

If you're serious about using Linux, I suggest you get a book and read a bit. If you find tech talk confusing, "Linux for Dummies" provides a good introduction into many different Linux distros and desktops. It comes with a CD (or DVD, I can't remember) with several distros as well.I'm quite surprised at how no-one seems to have written a basic instruction on how to do this...

All the guides I found were for 7.04, and you had to d/l something to make it understand you wanted to read AND write to the drive. The Gutsy wiki explains that you need to edit fstab, but it doesn't tell you what will need inputting.

I can't be the only on who wants my NTFS partitions mounted on boot, can I? Lol.well my pc hd is so small 60 GIGS, 3 partitions... one 30, win xp, 20 unpartitioned (used to be linux) and 10 gig sharing.... i never really needed to do that...

and im not a COMPLETE moron i know what some things mean... im just too used to windows xp right now...

and if i could makea boot floppy that would make my LIFE alot easier. This is one of the reasons I use Fedora 8, it comes with built in NTFS support. No need to edit the fstab or anything.fedora... heard of it... isnt that the one that takes 7 cds?Quote from: quaxo on December 29, 2007, 09:18:30 AM

Swish.I dunno about the CDs. I downloaded the DVD ISO and just used that. 1 DVD.

Yeah, many improvements over Fedora 6 & 7. That's one of them. Much better hardware support as well. The only thing it wasn't ready for was my webcam I think.dvds are 5.4 gigs.... cds are 700 megs... yes like 5 cds

Solve : modifying boot.ini so i can load knoppix?

Answer»

ok im manually installing knoppix cuz im out of cds... i made 3 partitions one for sharing, one for knoppix, and oen fer xp.... knoppix files are where they should be now i need to modify boot.ini in xp so i can load knoppix... but i have no clue how, or where, it is.how did you put the knoppix files on the partition? I don't think linux can run on an ntfs file system. Also, linux needs a SWAP partition, so you'll have to MAKE a fourth partition.
I've never heard of the windows boot manager (boot.ini) working with linux OSes. You're best bet is to get wingrub and install the GRUB bootloader. An even better bet would be to wait until you get some cd's and you can do it the easy way and make sure it's right.
Boot.ini is in the root of your windows partition. It is hidden so if you can't SEE it, configure windows to show hidden files and folders.
There are guides on how to add a Linux bootloader to the windows bootloader. But I think most of them assumes you've already got a Linux distro installed or got bootable MEDIA to install from.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=linux+windows+bootloader&btnG=Google+Searchi found out it was hidden a bit after i posted this... already shown it and its not there... now where can i find wingrub? (dont answer that ill just google it)You will also need to untick "Hide protected operating system files" in order to see the boot.ini. Trust me it's there, else your system wouldn't boot at all. Which incidentally might also be the result if you edit boot.ini incorrectly.
right click on My Computer, click properties, go to Advanced, and startup and recovery settings, then Edit in the system startup section.
And don't forget to save a backup of the original boot.ini before making any changes. alright now whats the strand of code i add on to run knoppix? it is drive D:/ just fyiI think you'll have to find that out for yourself. I believe all who have participated in your threads have suggested you burn or acquire bootable install media. The method you've chosen to use is for power users to say the very least.
As I've mentioned previously there are guides available on how to call a Linux bootloader from the one for windows... but they assume you're either installing from bootable media or already have a distro installed.I don't think boot.ini is going to work the way you want it to.

It's designed for WinNT based kernels, that said it can be used to point to other kernels, like that of Win9x...so it might work, but I doubt it.
