Solve : Had an idea?

Answer»

Ok, here's the idea. On GNOME, you can move files to the desktop. it acts as a folder that you view all of the time, at ~/Desktop/. This is QUITE useful for transferring files and suchlike from a usbdisk very fast, and anything downloaded by firefox goes there ANYWAY.

But the icons on the desktop annoy me . SO.

Is there a way to move any file put on the desktop to another folder, like ~/deskdump/ automatically? THis would keep the desktop clear, and would make me happy.

Oh and in Ubuntu, is there a way to switch off the disk DRIVE icons that appear on the desktop whenever you insert media?Quote from: hyperhedron on September 10, 2007, 01:07:24 AM

Solve : GRUB Stage 1.5 Error 17 HELP?

Answer»

Ok so i Duel boot Windows XP and Unix Ubuntu. After i deleted the partion that had Ubuntu on it cause i didn't want it anymore and i sign on, it comes up with GRUB Stage 1.5 GRUB Error 17, I NEED HELP BADLY i'm RUNNING off of my Ubuntu Live disc and can't even get into my C drive through it so if some one could help me with this is WOULD be much appretiated. :]I guess the other partition has Windoze on it.

In which case to get Windoze working again, you need to restore its original MBR.

On XP I think you boot from the install CD in recovery mode, and run FIXMBR.
On 98 it used to be that you boot from the install CD in recovery mode and ran FDISK /M

No idea abou Vista.well theres one problem w/ that... i don't have a windows install/setup disk it didn't come w/ my compborrow a disk from a friend....

Solve : Ubuntu?

Answer»

so, im learning a little bit about ubuntu, YA know, cause im cheap, and i want to use it for a new computer im planning on building, but i want to know a few things about ubuntu

first: im planning on getting a AMD 64 X2 6400+ and i heard you need a x86 processor or SOMTHING for ubuntu, would that processor work for it?

second: would i be able to play my windows games on ubuntu? i want to play games like guild wars, tabula rasa, aoc, aion, guild wars 2 blah blah blah.

third: is there anything i specifically wont be able to do on linux that is important?First question: yes. That processor is x86 compatible.

Second question: no. Windows software for Windows machines and Linux/Unix software for Unix machines. (Having said that, there is a certain amount of software that can be run using the Windows 'emulator', WINE.)

Third question: name something you currently do. You can probably do it on Linux (subject to the above caveat).

On the other hand, there are a lot of things you can do on a Linux machine, 'out of the box' without installing any (commercial) software, such as run a production-level web server, host your own BBS, etc.if you want to take advantage of the 64bit processor, you can download opensuse. Even if you didn't, I would still recommend opensuse. Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on January 15, 2008, 05:44:56 AM

thanks for the responce, ok thanks aobut the processor, and i need wine for windows softwear? ok, i looked that up wont be a problem. looking back i relise i only play games, do word processing and internet for school and crap and fix my COMPUTERS and stuffwine can run a good percentage of windows software on linux. Not everything though, and some programs sort of run. They may not be as powerful. Wine is built in to most linux OSes.You need to try several Linux distros to find the one that will work best with your hardware. In spite of what you are going to hear, there is no one, all-time, hotsy-totsty distro for everyone. Linux is linux is linux; it just depends on what drivers and other things have been rolled into a distro.

If you are planning on building a computer to use Linux, and you are thinking of Ubuntu, go to ubuntuforums.org and look for answers there.

As for running Windows aps, there are other possibilities besides Wine. For Windows games, I understand an ap called Cedega is used successfully (never tried it myself);
most Windows Office aps run well in a Linux ap called CrossOver Office; you could also
consider installing Virtual Box and just run Windows inside Linux. Most things you need to do in Windows, you can do in Linux without installing anything extra. Do your homework on this before you start buying things to build with; some stuff doesn't have drivers for Linux.Quote from: LuckyMax on January 22, 2008, 03:08:00 PM
Linux is linux is linux

Quote of the week, without a doubt. also consider windows/ubuntu dual boot. google it. Because the best thing to run games in linux-is windows. Cause I play bf2-i am pretty sure it doesn't run with wine. And other things which you might take for granted like itunes store doesn't work. I am a massive fan of ubuntu, as i am on here now trying to fix my other windows computer-dual boot-something to seriously consider. Just having windows is sort of like a back up, a crappy back up, like elton john as your back up in a fight. For now, a Windows/Ubuntu dual boot is your best option, and this automatically happens in Ubuntu set up if you tell it to take a percentage of the hard drive, as opposed to the whole thing. And wine RUNS most windows software (especially portable apps), and can be installed via the command line with the following command:
sudo apt-get install wine

Ubuntu is one of the best options for beginners, and there is both an x86 or x64 option, both of which will work on your processor. Enjoy,

-Stephenhey i have the same system but im haveing trouble with the password. the password i gave the loggin will not work. is there any kind of reset for the system passwords? i have no clue why it will not work.If you're having trouble right after installing it, the most pain free way would SIMPLY be to install it again (assuming you are talking about Ubuntu). However, if you somehow have another root account, then you can reset the password, using the "passwd" command, or if you don't, and you have the time, you can crack it using John the Ripper. If we are talking about Windows, there are many, many options. Let me know if you require further assistance in either area.

-StephenUbuntu DOES have a 64-bit version, but 64-bit CPUs (except for Itanium etc...) are all compatible with old/current x86 software. But 64-bit can be hard for drivers. I have an Athlon 64, but use the x86 version for compatibility.

Solve : create a bootable CD in linux.?

Answer»

Hi all,

I have created a executable file for my project. I have developed it using wxGTK2.8 in Linux.
Now I want to create a bootable CD for my application. That means machine will boot from the cd Rom ANS start my application automatically.
I have created an iso for bootCD and the machine is booting from CDRom but my main question is how can I set my application exe file with this iso, so that machine boot from CD and start my application. Please help me with an example. (My application is GUI base developed in Fedora7 using wxGTK2..

thanks
nasim
I would suggest looking at any bootable linux cd and see what FILES they have on it. Find out which of those files are doing the booting and if they need any folders for extra files. After that, copy those files to ANOTHER iso and then try booting with it. If it works, make yourself a shell script to call your program when it boots.
And don't forget google.

The wsXXX represents each WORKSTATION. I need to add ws104 ws105 ws110 ws111 ws112 ws113 to this LIST. How do I add to that list?

I can MAP the drives from the workstations to this spot.

Solve : Installing Linux from an ISO image file on a CD-R?

Answer»

Firstly, I feel very stupid right now, and even more angry at myself.

Secondly, I dont know where my second hard drive that I tried to install Linux on has gone, being the SOURCE of both the above. (it does not show up in My Computer anymore, where my list of drives used to be).

Now here is whats going on. I have been very interested in using the Linux operating system on my computer for some time. I wanted what is said to be a more secure OS, as I have had to cancel my last bank account due to being in debt because my credit card information was stolen online. there is no other way I can imagine so many purchases would have been made online that I had nothing to do with. and most of all, Windows has a reputation of being full of security flaws.

Lastly, I just wanted to TRY something different! so with all of that said, I downloaded the file Archlinux-i686-2007.08-2.core.iso from the ftp address ftp://ftp-linux.cc.gatech.edu/pub/linux/distributions/archlinux/iso/2007.08/i686/ which is apparently a Linux distro that likes to "Keep it Simple". (I haven't found it to be very simple so far, and I haven't even installed it yet! at least I dont THINK I have.... am I just that stupid or what?)

So backtracking before the (possible) install. I burned the ISO image file to a CD-R disc using Nero Burning ROM, and then restarted my pc with it in the CD-ROM drive. it comes up with a long string of things that pass by way too fast to even read, and finally comes to one that you are supposed to type something in at. Something that is along the lines of /arch/setup. then I go through the setup step-by-step, and along the way, some more text that I can't possibly read as fast as it passes by. next I get to a point where it is asking me to reboot, so I do. and all that I remember after this is there is yet again more text flying by, then the CAPS lock and Scroll lock lights on my keyboard are flashing, and no buttons I press work. not even CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart my pc. I literally have to hold down the power button to restart, which I have advised against doing once before on this same forum! I hate doing that, and the fact that I had no other option!

If nothing else, I would settle for just getting my other hard drive to appear again, so that I know its STILL WORKING and not ruined or something because of this! excuse me, I'm very paranoid right now. Well here is my info below!

* Basic details on your computer, manufacturer (Dell, HP, custom built), how much RAM, CPU (Intel/AMD), etc.
manufacturer: Compaq
RAM: 480 MB
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1700

* When did the issue start occurring? Did you recently install a program, new hardware device, or visit a web page?
After I supposedly installed the Distro and started booting from the CD-R containing the ISO image file!oh please dont leave me alone with this one! my last problem was a SNAP to fix! this time me and my computer feel like a person stranded in a desert and suffering from dehyrdation!if you tried to install linux on your other drive, it probably got formatted. windows will not recognize linux partitions. go into your BIOS and see if it is there. it should be.

secondly, if you've never used linux before, i dont recommend archlinux. you will be completely lost. even people with some linux experience struggle with it. you are better off using a distro such as ubuntu, pclinuxos or linuxmint.(a fav of mine)

after you pick a distro to try, join the official forum if you need help. most people are more than happy to help. good luck and be patient.archlinux was designed more for a linux power-user, not for a beginner. Instead, I recommend trying opensuse or ubuntu, as these are very simple to set up and configure.
You should be able to see the hard drives and reformat them in windows. Right click on My Computer and select Manage. From there find the Disk Management item in the left pane of the window. The main pane will show you all of the attached drives on the computer and you can delete partitions, rename, format, and reassign drive letters from there if you need to.
However, if you want to view files in a linux partition, you will need a third-party utility. I'm not sure which one's there are anymore, but know they exist.ok so it turns out that I was making a big deal out of nothing. all I had to do was right click on my computer and go to manage, just like you said. then I deleted the partitions that were created for the linux install, made a new one, and now my other drive shows up like it's supposed to. I'm a happy bunny again
in other news, I was completely lost for sure! I think I'm gonna go with ubuntu, I have heard a lot about it, and it does seem to be much easier. well thanks to everyone for getting me out of another mess! Ubuntu is definitely a better choice (especially for beginners). The installer is GUI (in other words, no fast text flying by ). It's even more friendly than the Windows XP installer. There is also a lot of help available for this from the community, and I'll be happy to help you at any given time. Just contact me here, or on "argentcomputers (at) lavabit (dot) com".

Solve : Installing ubuntu.?

Answer»

Hello folks, glad to be here!
I am trying to break free from the Monopolistic Shackles OS and use this ubuntu disk but I am wondering about drivers for this sys. I can get it installed with np, but it won't connect to the internet. Am I gonna hafta DOWNLOAD a separate driver for all my hardware now?Got any more system info for us? It's really difficult to TELL you how to fix your pc if we don't know what it is.
CHECK your system on the compatibility list on the Ubuntu website (if there is one)
If Ubuntu doesn't work, try another distro. You're pretty much guaranteed to find at least one linux distro that will work with any system. It was built by a pc repair shop. It's got an amd athlon 1.667 GHz CPU, 40 Gig Hd, Nvidia Geforce video card, a NetoDragon 56.6K modem(broadband isn't available here), and a VIA motherboard/soundcard.Oh, dialup internet.... now it's more clear. Ubuntu doesn't support most dialup modems.
https://help.ubuntu.com/7.04/internet/C/connect-to-internet.html#dialup
You can either try to find the drivers and install them yourself, or try another distro. I just CHECKED openSuSE (my CHOICE distro) and they don't have very many dialup modem drivers either. It may be difficult to find drivers, since dialup is such old technology.

Might there be some useful information in the Hardware Compatibility List?

http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl

As far as modem driver goes, you might want to post in the forums there on www.linuxquestions.org, asking if anyone knows anything about your modem.
Let's hope it is not a WinModem.

I'm thinking that is a WinModem.

Is this it? : http://www.outletpc.com/c3215.html

If I remember correctly, it is going to be luck if you can get a linux driver for a WinModem.
Let's see what michaewlewis has to say about it.

If I'm right, then it becomes a question of what to shop for, modem-wise.
Personally, I always liked external modems. No matter what the os was.
I had very good luck with USRobotics, and also Multi-Tech.
If you are careful, and willing to take a small chance, you can get a deal on eBay. I've bought modems there, and had good results.

Again, we need michaewlewis to comment because I'm fuzzy on this next part, but I think that if you are using an external modem with linux, then no driver is needed for the modem per se - because it is connected to a serial port, you need to install whatever is necessary so that linux can talk to the port.

edited to add:
For some reading, go here:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/search.php
Type in NetoDragon under Search by Keyword, and hit enter.

Wow, I'm touched... Someone actually is waiting for my response.

I think the easiest thing to do is check the hcl (hardware compatability list) for the distro you want to use and try to buy a new modem that is on it. You might be able to find drivers for a winmodem for linux, but it would probably involve a lot of advanced configuration, which would probably not be good for a new linux user.
Newegg.com has modems as cheap as $5.
I'll look more into this after I get off vacation.

Solve : redhat fedora 7 linux?

Answer»

Has anybody INSTALLED redhat FEDORA 7 linux i would like to know pros and cons like does it SUPPORT all drivers like PRINTER joysticks ectFedora is a pretty solid and mainstream version of linux. It should have most of the drivers you need for printers, etc. Check the hardware compatability list on the fedora WEBSITE to make sure everything you have is supported.
A lot of people like the installer manager for fedora, which makes it easier to install programs.
The last time I've install red hat was version 4, I think. So I don't know much about it anymore.

Solve : creating Linux or Unix Automated Script help?

Answer»

Hi There-

I am just learning how to do UNIX/Linux work and I have been charged with trying to write a script to automate a couple of processes.

The series of commands is as such.

script 1:

open shell
cd /w/config
rm mgd_stage
ln -s mgd_stage_normal mgd_stage

"perform TPS reset"

---------------------------
script 2:

open shell
cd /w/config
rm mgd_stage
ln -s mgd_stage_horse mgd_stage

perform a "TPS reset"

I know how to do this normally, but would like to be able to just TYPE in a command at the prompt, ie: stage_normal or stage_horse so that the user doens't have to go through all of that work each time...

Anyone out there willing to walk me through this process would be GREATLY appreciated.

Kind Regards,

DECronkJust put all that into a text editor and save it as a .sh file. This is the equivalent of batch files on Windows.Try this: http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Bash-Prog-Intro-HOWTO.htmlscript 1:

#!/bin/bash
cd /w/config
rm -r mgd_stage
ln -s mgd_stage_normal mgd_stage
#tps_reset_command here (I am UNSURE of this command)

---------------------------
script 2:

#!/bin/bash
cd /w/config
rm -r mgd_stage
ln -s mgd_stage_horse mgd_stage
#tps_reset_command here (I am unsure of this command)

That should do what you WANT it to. Basically, you put one command on each line, or simply all on one line:
#!/bin/bash
cd /w/config && rm -r mgd_stage && ln -s mgd_stage_horse mgd_stage && tps_reset_command

Hope that helps

I don't know if you can make a computer do anything while it is sleeping. It usually pauses all PROCESSES so it can ENTER a low POWER state.
You're not trying to create a screensaver are you? It's not that kind of sleeping michaewlewis... its a sleep command in a script.

and if i have two operating systems and my boot loader has been crashed then what should i do.........

It would be good to know what operating systems you're using...
If your boot loader have "crashed" then first of all you NEED to give us some more details on what you mean by this, second of all we need to know what boot loader it is and again what operating systems you're using. If you're using windows, boot with the windows cd and do the repair windows option. When a command prompt comes up, type fixmbr
If you're using linux/unix, GO to http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/ and use their wiki to find out how to INSTALL the grub BOOTLOADER. or for the lilo bootloader go here: http://lilo.go.dyndns.org/

As deerpark already mentioned, more info about what you are doing would help us help you.

Solve : Apllication Install?

I downlaoded some linux applications, how do I install them?? Sorry I'm a windows user and haven't gotin used to knoppix yet. Depends on what you've downloaded...
The most general thing I can say is to follow the installation instructions for the software in question.I LOOKED but all I get is a buntch of code. Can't help you when you don't provide the most basic information...
I would think you would have learned that after 275 posts. That numbers off, But what would your basic info be? Not everyone sees the same way at the same thing. The pc info or about the programs themself.Honestly.... this is PRETTY obvious. If you need help installing a piece of software I need to know what software it is, the OS + version of OS, what you've tried so FAR, what instructions you've followed.

knoppix 5.1,budget linux, banal I look threw the files but I dont rember where I got the files so I haven't really tried anything else.I suggest you remember where you got the programs. The installation instructions are often on the website.Okay I'll try looking for it.Can't find the site. Is there any way to tell in the files or should I get them replaced? Download new files to replace these.I have no idea what you've downloaded so can't really tell you anything.I'll just look for new programs to replace the ones I put on thereHave you try googling it? Im sure there are hundreds of sites that provides HOWTO's for US newbies... Though I myself is having a hard time followin them..

Solve : How to show the depth of a file by a single command??

Answer»

Hi all,

I am a Unix noob, just started learning unix.
I logged on to school's Solaris machine to practice unix commands
here is a question that is pretty TRICKY to me,

SHOW the depth of a regular file in a directory.

I tried to use find command with -printf %d to show the file's depth, but I got error
message: find: bad option -printf

anybody can help me solve this question?

Thanks a lot

i do not have a Solaris machine right now, however, i believe Solaris version of find doesn't have the -printf option. however i may be wrong, so check the man page. TYPE man find. see if there's one.
If there is, the correct syntax is
Code: [Select]find /path -type f -printf "%f:%d"
if the version doesn't support printf, and if you still want to find the depth, you can DOWNLOAD GNU find. Hi ghostdog74

Thanks for the reply
I think you are right, the "find" command dose not have "printf" option on Solaris machine,
however I found other way to do it, set "/" as delimiter, and then count the NUMBER of column,
am I right?

Thanks
i wouldn't know if its right unless you show how you did it ?

Solve : Linux Word Processor on USB Drive?

Answer»

I'm on a college campus that provides free printing through its Linux lab, however the computers are running on Fedora with no word processing software, or even a simple program SIMILAR to Windows' WordPad. I only print Word (.doc) documents, so without the software to open the format, I'm stuck. Since I have no permission to install any software on these machines, I was wondering if it was possible to load a linux word processor program onto my USB drive to use when on a Linux MACHINE?

I'm a newbie to Linux, so I'm thinking this process will be different than loading a Windows .exe file onto a USB drive to just execute whenever the drive is plugged in. I would also like to be ABLE to use this drive to store files too, so I would wonder if it is possible to load a linux program onto a USB drive that will STILL be used by Windows (Vista, XP, 2000) too?

Thanks for the help.heard of portable openoffice?http://portableapps.com/ - just in case you need more apps. OpenOffice.org Portable is for windows though... so unless the machines got Wine installed it wont do him much good.Yeah, I'm talking about a word processor that can handle .doc (maybe .rtf) straight in Linux, with no Windows at all. I see that the Open Office Portable is for Windows, so it doesn't solve my problem. My issue is finding a Linux word processor that can be loaded and executed from a USB drive in Linux.I think you can install KOffice onto a flash drive on another computer running linux and then use that flash drive to run koffice on the computers in the computer lab.
Or even install koffice in a home directory in a computer in the computer lab. You don't need to be root to do that.

Solve : copying recursively and pruning?

Answer»
hello all,
IVE got a simple question, but i havent found the simple answer, or any answer for that matter.

I'd like to copy a hierarchy of files, but with a catch: i only WANT the .txt files. cp has the recursive
option -r which copies everything

Code: [Select]cp -r foo/* bar
but i just want the .txt files. i thought it might work to do this:
Code: [Select]cp -r foo/*.txt barbut this doesnt recurse (obviously since my folders dont END with .txt)

What can i do?

Thanks in advance!
Have a look at FIND (man find). The -exec option should help. Also have a look at xargs. This is taken from my man pages:

Code: [Select]EXAMPLES
find /tmp -name core -type f -print | xargs /bin/rm -f

Find files named core in or below the directory /tmp and delete them. Note that this will work incorrectly if there are any filenames
containing newlines or spaces.

find /tmp -name core -type f -print0 | xargs -0 /bin/rm -f

Find files named core in or below the directory /tmp and delete them, processing filenames in such a way that file or directory NAMES
containing spaces or newlines are correctly handled.

Code: [Select]cp -R *.txt destination

Solve : SCP help?

Answer»

Hello,

I have been using scp command to transfer a bunch of files from ONE server to another server. The process is " (a) to CREATE the files, (b) transfer those from server X to server Y and (c) then PERFORM NEXT process". If NEXT (that is (c) ) process fails then then we retry the whole process. This mean we try to execute the scp command again. The twist is scp command fails if it finds that the files are already existent.

My question is that is there any way to forcibly COPY the files again or provide some option that step (b) does not give any error. The problem is that if I encounter any problem in scp command (that is (b) ), I re execute the whole process and I do not have the authority to delete any files on server Y, so I have to succed in the scp command.

Please help me if you have some suggestion
ShilpaAre you using the -r option? what options are you using? In my experiment I found that -r option actually overwrites the file. Its ok even though its It is a wastage of cpu cycles. My experiment in shell has worked well. Both the directories and files get overwritten. I am facing some problem doing it in Java but I think it will work out.

Thanks so much for the reply!
ShilpaI think rsync is probably a better tool for this job, given what you need it to do.

man rsync

and also

man rsyncd.conf

Hope this HELPS.

Solve : My Beryl Needs Tweaked?

Answer»

After repeated attempts of trying to get my wireless card working on one computer with ubuntu, I gave up. Then I installed ubuntu on my computer with a wired connection. Everything works flawless. So after that I spent many an hour looking for a way to install beryl. Keep in mind I'm new to Linux. Anyway, I finally got that to work too. The problem I'm having is tweaking it too look like the videos one youtube. For instance, how do I get my cube to be smaller with a picture in the BACKGROUND? Or can anyone point me in a directions where I can get the import settings from someone else that has it tweaked already? Any help would be great.what settings manager are you using? (like what program ddo you use to change OPTIONS)All I know is that it is the Red diamond icon up in the top right hand corner, Beryl settings manager. Beyond that I don't know much else to tell you.I don't know if it matters but I am using Ubuntu fiesty fawn, with GNOME. I've heard some people saying that you need KDE to make it work right, but I don't know what to think. If that's the case what distro would be better suited for beryl?Let me get this straight.... you're trying to WATCH youtube videos, but they aren't displaying correctly?
or are you trying to change the display settings on your linux box?
I'm a little confused.
I'm trying to tweak the settings in beryl so that mine looks like the videos on youtube. Though as of right now I have figured out how to get all the neat little fire animations and so forth for the windows. What I can't figure out is how to make the cube so I can rotate it and have different backgrounds, etc. All it does is flip the window around like it was a card or 2D. There is no cube. I want to know how I go about MAKING it. Also, can I download other settings for beryl? I see some videos where when you minimize a window or whatever, it has a rainbow effect. Sort of like what BURN does when you use that setting, only rainbow. I don't see that setting. Though what I really need is to know how to make and manipulate a cube. Hope that clears some things up.

I checked the SETTINGS of the Bluetooth. They are fine.

I am trying to send a picture from the mobile phone to the computer.
My mobile phone does not recognize the computer.
I have been trying this for a several days.

As far as I know it is UNNECESSARY to have any cable to transfer a
file or a photo from the mobile phone to the computer via Bluetooth
within 10 meters.

The mobile phone should recognize the computer the way it recognizes
mobile phones which has bluetooth function is activated.

It does not recognize the computer even if the distance is just
10 millimeters.

I want your help to solve the problem. Can you computer find your phone via bluetooth?

...Thanks Rob:) I will keep everyone posted once i fire up my new PC..Goodbye Billy boy and your world of human cyborgs! lolRob i was wondering why you think Ubuntu is better? Is it true it is faster, less error prone, uses less space etc etc? What exactly makes Ubuntu better than say XP?Yes, all of those in many ways. Biggest drawback with Linux is the lack of support for the very latest peripherals. As a WORKING environment, it's excellent - more stable than XP in many ways. Definitely more space efficient, and for more versatile out of the box.

That said, as a professional user I mainly use Linux at the server end, not at the desktop. Linux servers tend to have so little unnecessary junk installed they can't help but be faster than Windows servers at equivalent tasks."Better" is a relative term. If you want the fastest, most secure OS, you could try netbsd (unix, not linux) and it can run on anything (it's even been installed on a toaster). If you want a full desktop system, try opensuse or ubuntu. If you want a basic desktop that is super fast, try puppy linux. It's up to you which one is better.
My personal favorite is opensuse.Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on January 17, 2008, 10:35:05 AM

okay, what have you been smoking..... and why aren't you sharing?
Windows has infinitely more support than Linux. That's because Microsoft is a billion dollar company and has 500 million more users than Linux. If a list were made of all the windows user forums and all the linux user forums, Windows would be in the lead 25 to 1. And then windows has the corporate website that can answer almost every question asked about any microsoft product. Linux has no such site that can answer everything. linuxquestions.org probably comes the closest, but still way behind.Actually, I said:

Solve : Basic Unix shell question?

Answer»

I am working from home, so I use remote connection to the Oracle db hosted on Solaris. I open SHELL, LOG in to database and run a stored database procedure (which I wrote, and which runs fine from the office). The problem is that I get timed out from my shell pretty fast and that (somewhat to my SURPRISE) causes an error in the stored procedure EXECUTION.

My first question is, can my connection actually affect the stored procedure execution?

Second question is more general: Is there any command in Unix to help me kind of say "forget about the connection/shell, you don't NEED it. Just execute the stored database procedure?"

Thanks a lot!

You guys know what "database" is? I've never used Oracle... just mysql. and I've never had to remote into another linux box. So I've no clue how to troubleshoot it.... sorry.

Solve : Linux is still better than Windows.?

Answer»

Full title is:
Why Linux is still better than Windows 10

The article was published January this year. Windows still lacks things things found in other operating systems. The most common complaint about Windows is how hard it is to adjust almost anything other that the superficial things.

With Windows 10 you have to get apps for the apps store just to do things that should be built-in.

Some say that windows was better before Windows 10. Older versions of Windows had easy to use tools. With Linux you do not have to use the newest version to get support. Some versions have long therm support as an objective.

And, I am no longer a Linux rebel. But I was some years ago. But this post is not about my personal OS habits. My POINT here is to ask you if you think Linux is better that Windows.

By the way --- You can have Linux and Windows at the same time. No, not in a dual boot. At the same time. Enjoy the best of both worlds. Microsoft now putting Linux into windows.
See here:
Linux comes to Windows -- and 5 other big things Microsoft announced

So, do you agree? Is Linux still better? Full time Linux user here. Articles like that are worthless, comments taken from Reddit are hardly a credible source. All articles like that do is reinforce the stereotype that all Linux users are fanboys who believe that Linux is some sort of holy grail. For some users (myself included) Linux works better than windows but for the average user, windows is still the better option due to application availability and the amount of support available for it. For example, MS Office doesn't work on Linux so you are stuck with libreoffice which I find unbearable for any large piece of work, I end up having to use a Windows 10 VM so I can run proper MS office. I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and Win XP in a dual boot system. The only reason that I haven't stop using Windows altogether is because there are things that I can't use in linux. Call me crazy but I have four hard disks, why not have more than one operating system?I am the opposite. I run Windows 10 because I always mess up my linux installs, and have a hard time fixing them. I run linux inside hyper-v on physical disks. I really like how easy it is to set up compared to virtualbox. I prefer to run debian, but I am learning to use arch and gentoo to learn more how linux works. I think my next step will be to learn how to write drivers for linux or possible do a linux from scratch. (I'm talking in the next few years maybe).Well linux is really so easy and just ooooouuh good although there is many necessary programs that can be used only in windows, that's kind'a sad...Because I am a gamer, Linux has yet to replace Windows.

However I do run Linux Mint on multiple systems that I dont use for gaming mainly because I dont want to buy another copy of Windows when I already have Windows 10 on 2 computers, Windows 7 on 5 systems, Vista on 1 system, and Windows XP on 2 others, and the rest are Linux Mint of the 16 computers I have.True confessions. I only use Linux when something goes songwriting my Windows system.
In fact, the image restore program I use is a program that runs inside of Linux during a full restore. It is called Macrium Reflect.
Macrium Reflect is free. http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
If you don't have any particular programs you can't install on linux (like games, cad software, photoshop or professional video editing softwares), I can't really see why not using Linux...

Ease of use? Some distros of Linux ARE easy, people find them difficult just because it's not what they're used to, but it doesn't take much to re-learn a couple of basics.
As far as Linux goes. I actually enjoy Linux for most environments. But the biggest headaches are trying to get software to work with it that isnt intended / isnt ported for Linux as well as say a laptop in which there is no sound driver available for the on board audio and going through generic drivers is like trying to find a needle in a haystack or even worse.

I have tried to help people switch from Windows to Linux before as well such as this one guy bought a laptop in Thailand at what he thought was a really good DEAL. He brought it back to the united states and it soon started warning him that his installation of Windows appears to be counterfeit. He contacted me for help. I told him that he needs to buy Windows 7 for his laptop if he wants to have Windows 7. Told him I will not do anything illegal. He didnt want to spend any money and so I said your alternative is installing Linux. I showed him Linux Mint version 13 running on my one laptop and he said ok i will go with that. So I installed Mint 13 Cinnamon 64-bit to his laptop and for the most part everything worked. Thought he was good to go. But then his bluetooth devices didnt want to play with his laptop and his lexmark printer at home didnt have a suitable Linux driver for it. He was in a situation where its either buy Windows 7 or buy a new printer that supported Linux Mint 13 for driver support. He ENDED up working out a deal with his brother to swap printers and the HP printer he got had a generic driver that worked with it. Last i know he is on 17.3 now and he has finally gotten use to it, but never ending questions at times. So sometimes I wish he went with buying Windows 7 for it to not have the headaches of Linux with someone with very little computer knowledge and strictly user access of Linux without the ability to self admin his own system to maintain it.I've used various distributions of Linux over the years but have never felt compelled to make it my full-time OS. Windows does all I need and I don't have issues with upgrades, updates, viruses, etc... that many other people seem to encounter. Windows just works for me. Currently, the biggest use I have for Linux is when working with my Raspberry Pi computers (currently own 4). The Raspberry Pi runs the Raspbian distribution of Linux although there are other OSes that have been ported to the Pi (not Windows unless you count Windows IoT).

Android for mobile is the only linux OS, I find useful.

I found Linux Mint glitchy and confusing. Had to reach out to their chatroom several times to figure things out.

Found out running Wine to get Windows apps working is a bad idea. I had problems getting virtualization working too.

Linux for PCs is not what I call user friendly and if you have Windows only apps, you'll end up needing Windows. Ironically, some call us Windows fanboys.

But, than again some apps require Android, go figure. The link below is now 3 or 4 years old. Still, the points made are now even more relevant. First of all, the desktop is changing and will all but disappear. In the FUTURE a keyboard will be a vestigial organ. Monitors will not be monitors. You will either wear a head set or stare at a wall or look at your Linux-powered smartphone.

f there's one adjective that sums up a significant source of Linux's power, it's "malleable." Linux is raw material that can be cut, stitched, and tailored to fit most any number of scenarios, from tiny embedded devices to massively parallel supercomputers.

Nobody takes very seriously the idea that Linux is about to be wiped off the map by a rogue patent threat or lawsuit. One of the biggest such legal attacks, SCO Group's lawsuit against IBM, widely construed as a proxy attack on Linux, failed miserably.
It is more likely that the winds of change will cause Windows to crash and burn.Quote
In the future a keyboard will be a vestigial organ. Monitors will not be monitors. You will either wear a head set or stare at a wall or look at your Linux-powered smartphone.

As you already know, I disagree with this assessment. Interestingly that very similar statements can be found going back to the 80's. I seem to remember some people expressing similar viewpoints in episodes of "The Computer Chronicles" for example dating back to the 80's and 90's.

However while the technologies proposed to replace our standard input devices- speech to text and text to speech for example- have become valuable- you use dictation software, for example, and people who are blind use text to speech to "see" their screens- I don't see them being used to replace the keyboard for a typical user anytime soon, just a value-add for certain users individual needs.

I mean, let's think critically here- these sorts of devices and features all have a certain inexact quality- dictation software misunderstands you, and text to speech mispronounces or misreads text or reads text incorrectly; features like motion control- intended to replace the typical gaming interface of a Game Controller- has it's own issues as well. It seems that the more "intuitive" an interface is supposed to be, the more can go wrong.

What makes keyboards so everlasting (and game controllers for many games I suppose) is that they enforce something that people generally expect when using computers- that "To err is human". With other interfaces intended to be more "intuitive", gestures can be misinterpreted, speech misunderstood or misinterpreted, text mispronounced, etc. But it is humans which make typos when using keyboards (or game controllers).

That isn't to say it is impossible, I just don't see it as very likely; I mean, as it is, we haven't even really gotten toasters down. They seem to either deliver slightly warm bread, or pre-fired charcoal. Quote

Solve : not dual booting...?

Answer»

I have installed XP on a partition of my hard drive (partitions are each half, 20gb) but now it wont let me decide to boot into linux or xp. how can i do this. when i GO to my computer it only shows 1 partiton, the one im in (e:/, the windows boot) i know i still have linux on my pc becaues e:/ is only 20gb of 40, and i know it just cant disseppear. how can i make a SCREEN that i choose: Ubuntu Linux or WIndows Xp. I have a bunch of crap that i need to access in ubuntu and i cant afford to not be able to get in it. which OS did you install first? Windows doesn't like to know about any other OSes and usually tries to wipe them out when installing. Remedy: install windows first, then linux.

Most linux distros come with a boot manager. If you don't get the boot manager when you restart the computer, then either your boot manager is corrupted, or you installed linux before windows and it got deleted. If you need to get files off your linux partition, boot with your ubuntu cd and try to access your files. From there, BURN them to cd or flash drive or COPY them to the other partition.

Also, you won't be able to see the linux partition from windows. Windows doesn't recognize foreign partition types.

Solve : Resolved: FTP Issues?

Answer»

My server (I went with Ubuntu Linux and Apache2) is having issues with VSFTPD (and FTP server program)

The issue is this:
When I log into my user account (using any FTP client) to access FTP, I am unable to modify/create/delete any files. I have no idea where to start.

I can VIEW files and open them on my locally, thats fine, but I cannot modify them or anything.

I have no idea where to start. I do not have FTP ports forwarded, since I only access them locally (192.168.1.7) either that, or the server itself uses FTP to transfer files for web installers (like SMF Forum Board, which is the reason I need to get FTP working in the first place)

Oh Forum People, what shall thou do?

Thank you very much for your replies
-ZylstraUnless I'm mistaken FTP is a File transfer protocol it's not meant as a way to edit files or create files. If you're wanting to do that you'll want to Telnet to the box or more preferably SSH to the box.

However, that being said you should be able to delete files within an FTP session and/or create new directories assuming you've got the rights. What happens when you attempt to delete a file?FTP (Depending on your FTP client) can be used to edit files (it just makes a temporary copy, and automatically uploads it when edited) but I cannot upload files anyways
(I do USE SSH a LOT though)

Figured it out, its a permissions issue.

I dont know how to fix it though...

I can create/modify/delete files in my own directory (using the "server" account, I can edit the folder that belongs to it)
The problem is, I need to be able to change the /home/user/public_html folder (preferably being able to change all files over FTP with the proper information WOULD be nice)
How do I correct this issue? You might be able to change by using the command "chmod -R a+wrx /home/user/public_html". Must be done as root. Quote from: SilentAssasin64 on October 20, 2007, 10:09:14 PM

That worked! Thanks, SilentAssasin!

Marking my own topic as "Resolved" Maybe not...

When I try to access directories created with this new setting, I get this error:

Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /smf/ on this server.

(where SMF is the directory I made)

EDIT:
It seems that I can manually change the CH-MOD settings in my FTP client, but I'm not sure this is a good permanent solution.

Solve : Lenovo 110S - Multiple boot records on eMMC even when attempting clean install?

Answer»

So I have a Lenovo 110S with 2GB RAM and 32GB eMMC. It was running Linux Mint 20.2 Cinnamon without any issues until a week ago there were updates and I allowed it to go through updates to which when it said reboot required, I went through the reboot and it crashed into a Linux boot loop.

I took the USB stick that I used originally in installing Linux Mint 20.2 and BOOTED off of that and attempted to install clean by wiping all data. All looked good and when it rebooted it now dumped me out to grub and not to the GUI desktop of Linux Mint.

Tried yet again and got the same result. Made a new bootable USB stick in case the one I was using was corrupt and got the same results.

When looking into the boot options it shows 2 instances of Linux Mint as ( ubuntu ) and still has an old record of Windows 10 that no longer exists. Looking in BIOS the system has in list of devices to boot from also this list. When looking for a way to deleting these from the BIOS's bootable device list it gives option of using DEL key ( only if those are unprotected ), of which they must be protected somehow because I cant remove them.

What gets me is that all the bootable instances I would think should be all under the eMMC 32GB and its got them as their own even though its all stored on the 32GB eMMC.

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions of a bootable tool to wipe the eMMC clean so I can start FRESH. GOOGLE search stated I can use DiskWipe.exe and I attempted to use this with BartPE but Bart PE is too old in that it doesnt DETECT the eMMC storage controller. Thinking there must be something out there to download and make a bootable USB stick, run it and wipe the eMMC of all boot records etc and start fresh.

Hopefully someone can suggest one? Way back in the day I use to use DelPart on a bootable CD that I made, but without the driver support to access the eMMC that wont work either.

Attached some pics to show the boot menu as well as the BIOS listing of bootable device list.Any luck Dave?

Have you tried PartedMagic? https://partedmagic.com/
It has been my goto for years. Its handy as it uses very recent versions of the kernel.I ENDED up using Windows 10 to clean up the mess. During installation of Windows 10 it gives option of where to install it to, that screen has options to select partitions and delete them and wipe the MBR. And so I used that to wipe the eMMC clean and then left it with no partitions and backed out of the install.

Then installed Linux Mint 20.2 back to it again. It appears that the BIOS looks at the eMMC at POST and with multiple records it was showing multiples in listing. All is better now with a single instance of Linux as reported by BIOS as well as no more orphan data from prior installs.

Solve : Installing Knoppix Problem Partiton?

Answer»

I'm trying to put Knoppix on an Harddrive. When I go to partition the drive, I select manual. I end up getting this error "The installer detected that the installation requirements aren't fill fulled yet. please make sure that you have a FREE partition with at least 0 GB to install knoppix on. Also, we need a swap partition with at least 128 MB if you don't have 512 MB memory. In the following menu, you can start some tools to partition the drive. If you really really know what you are doing start with : IGNORE_CHECK=1 Sudo knoppix-installer to avoid menu." I press enter and it takes me back to the partion menu. I end up cycling between the two, I have 320 MB SDRAM installed an partitioned 20 GB harddrive.Have you done what the installer is asking you to do? I.e create a main partition and a swap partition? No cause I keep getting the erorr message.Manual partitioning is not a trivial exercise and is best avoided by newcomers to Linux. Better to let something like Ubuntu or one of the hyper-user-friendly distros GUIDE you through the process.I like knoppix and its GUI interfacement. I'll try more shearching to resolve this and any help will be appericatedElse try Kubuntu, it uses KDE for the GUI like Knoppix.openSuSE
you can choose between gnome and kde, or five other nice window managers. I found a flash swf that helps explain it. Dealing with another problem with the machine thoughtThere is a GNOME Partitioner LIVE CD available.

It's pretty simple to use.

Don't have a link though, just GOOGLE it.GPartEd
