Answer» i have an old compaq armada 800MHz, 256MB of RAM, pentiumIII, and i succesfully INSTALLED ubuntu. well, after INSTALLATION is complete, and i REMOVE the installation disc, while its booting up i get an error that says "mounting root file system not found." but if i keep the disc in there, it will BOOT with no problem.
what does this mean?when you say you keep the disc in and it boots, does that mean the live system boots?
often i find that installing with the alternate CD works sometimes, but by the looks of this it seems that may not work. worth a shot though. It sounds like with the disc in it is booting to LiveCD. Which is running off of the CD not your computer.
As for the "mounting root file system not found" it sounds like something went from with the installation. Does it load to the GRUB boot screen?
If you have no data to loose, a REINSTALL wouldn't hurt anything.
